Sascar Through the application of an active noise control system (Anc-Active noise control), Sascar project has found the solution to reduce low frequency emissions up to 1200Hz. It ensures greater comfort, material savings and simpler design for ventilation systems, which are the main cause of noise. It can reduce unwanted sound emissions through electronic devices that generate an equal and out of phase noise compared to what creates the disorder. It consists of simple items like microphones that “listen” and detect noise, and one or more speakers that emit the attenuation signal.

Sanctuary Cove The 25th anniversary Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) will welcome 39 first-time exhibitors to this year’s event, running from May 23-26. Vripack “No Nonsense, go anywhere” is the motto that the Dutch company used at the Monaco boat show in the competition for visitors and exhibitors. By placing hundreds of white mini superyachts each called, No Nonsense, Vripack invited the competitors to indulge their fantasies. Anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these limited edition models, were invited to take part in an adventure to make their own new found possessions “go anywhere”. Under each No Nonsense yacht the owner would find a QR code, that would link each pocket superyacht to a special site where they all come together and share pictures of their journey with No Nonsense. The first prize was a beautiful hand crafted art piece designed by Vripack and made by Henk de Boer, a craftsman of the famous Dutch earthenware. And the winner was Gaël Douguet from Jfa Yachts

Planet Solar After over six months of maintenance the solar boat is back in the water and preparing for its 2013 tour. The recent improvements will expand and diversify the ship’s applications and enable it to navigate to the northernmost part of the Atlantic for the first time. Despite the lower attendance, exhibitors reported improvement over 2012. In Miami, Nashville and Chicago, attendance was relatively flat with last year. Elisabetta Pianta

A shark…with a trunk? A young elephant shark, about three and a half meters long, was seen on the coast of Taranto, close to the shore, 10 meters from the rocks, about 2-3 meters deep. This is an animal which is completely harmless to humans, that eats plankton exclusively.

The European Parliament Committee on Fisheries (PECH) voted in favor of the reform proposals that could potentially lead the way to sustainable development of fishing in the UE (502 votes in favor 137 against), for the regulation that will permit the “reconstitution of ichthyic stock”: the most devastating fishing methods must be stopped and the quantity more strictly regulated. The

remarks on the part of the environmental front are positive. Even the mayors of the 12 Communes with the principal Italian fishing boat ports, worried about the serious crisis of the sector and the consequential lose of thousands of jobs, had signed an appeal to the European members of parliament to obtain social and environmental sustainability measures able to secure a future for Italian fishing.

Recreational yet useful photos A study published by Wildlife Research magazine revealed that researchers can succeed in correctly identifying sharks using 85% of recreational shots of these animals published on social networks. During scuba diving, tourists (at Maldive and other parts of the Indian Ocean), often take pictures of whale sharks and then publish them on sites such as Flickr, Facebook and Youtube. New analysis, conducted by the Imperial College of Longon, reveal that these photos are a very useful source of information and can help scientists recognize more of the less well-known history of sharks, listed as “vulnerable species” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It is noted that these species, believed to be the biggest on the planet, can migrate incredible distances and immerge themselves deep into the sea.

Whale watcher courses Being able to study and recognize marine animals in their natural habitat is the objective of a course organized by the Jonian Dolphon Conservation (JDC), the association that has been studying and monitoring the presence of cetaceans in the Taranto Gulf for 4 years, and whose research has already resulted in the identification of colonies of dolphins in the Ionian sea. The duration of the course is 90 hours; 60 hours of theory held at the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute and 30 hours of practice with 5 sea excursions. The island of biodiversity A study was recently published in Zoo Keys magazine which listed the incredible diversity of species present in the northeastern part of Luzon Island, in the Philippine Archipelago. Combining data from various surveys analyzed in recent years, the research team discovered more than 29 species of amphibians, 30 lizards, 35 snakes, 5 turtles and 2 crocodiles. Among them, there is for example the Hologerrhum Phillipinum snake with lively yellow decorations on the skin, Trionychidae, Pelochelys Cantorii and the clear skinned frog known as Rhacaphorus Appendiculatus. Most of these species are native to the Island and more than 38% of them elude normal classification.

Very particular toads – with extra paws or rather without eyes – were located at Gladstone, in Queensland, one of the most industrialized centers of Australia (there is a big carbon electrical center, two aluminum foundries and a natural molten gas plant). In some areas of the city up to 20% of toads have mutations (such as a third front paw that grows from the chest, or 8 fingers instead of 4), as opposed to the 1.1% of their population in non-urban areas. The poisonous “cane toads”, introduced in South America in 1935 in the failed attempt to control the sugar cane parasite, have since then multiplied excessively. Logically, the quality of the water and health conditions of the fish at the Gladstone bay have for some time been at the center of environmental concerns: last year 6 dolphins and 231 turtles were found dead.

The market has had to readjust itself to the more limited spending capability of builders, owners and of all those people who have invested less money in this field of entertainment and spare time. Common policy has been that of investments into emerging countries, which involves the main European boat manufacturers. market are still down, but certainly the year just ended has seen solid signs of recovery: some companies have declared the highest sales of the last 5 years in 2012, even if the numbers of 2007 haven’t still been reached. According to the statistics of NMMA (National Marine manufacturer association), total sales in 2012 for the boats were up +14%. The number hides many oscillations and instability: the aluminum boats over 16’ increased +21%, the inboard only +1%, the outboard fiberglass +14%, while the registration of new boats saw an increase of 10%. We should add, however, that all the shipyards have increased the production plans in 2013 as a result of new orders or sales.

USA Regarding the exports in 2012 compared to 2011, numbers still reveal a strong crisis in the sector towards Europe and a growth to emerging countries. To cite a few percentages, 33.5% for Australia, -47.20% for Italy, but +35.5% for Brazil, +67.10% for Venezuela and +52.50% for Mexico. he workshop was promoted by Penta, center for excellence in the Tuscan nautical, and assessed not only

the business and purely statistical side, but also aspects concerning the ships building and maintenance, the choice of the crew, security on board for visitors, the approach and the respect of the laws of the various countries. Boating companies, brokers, service providers, managers of docks and commanders of super yachts attended this event. The need for aggregation of water clusters at national level has immediately emerged, relationships between producers (construction companies and industries of satellite activities and services) and consumers (ship owners and captains). Important was the collaboration of the commanders to establish the terms of a possible evolution process both productive and of relationship for the entire sector. The crisis has changed the character of the market demand of large yachts and a proactive response can only come from innovation, integration and reorganization of territorial systems, together with an enhanced efficiency and competitiveness from the companies. The life cycle of the production and management of a pleasure craft gives impetus to a system of relations even of a cross-sector undertakings also with industries that are not traditionally related to the pleasure boat sector. In particular, services related to refit and repair and to the operational management of large yachts make up a complex system of "after market" characterized by a greater multi-centric approach, on demand and supply sides, and Yare’s goal is to make these worlds meet, studying the financial and employment effects on the territory.

Data on superyachts were presented, with 4,686 units in the world. 36% of global orders is Italian, which is in first place followed by the Netherlands,Turkey (13%) and America (10%). In 2012 there were 423 orders and there are 407 for 2013. A particularly important moment, then, was a first cycle of b2b among the commanders of the super yacht, guests of the Captains' Dock that involved the 60 unit managers between 30 and 60 meters in more than 120 meetings, with trade and requests for further information on products and services by the captains.

The golden Route The 13,225 nautical miles that separate New York from San Francisco via Cape Horn are an historic route, widely travelled by clippers that were involved in the goldrush starting from the second half of 1800. The best result of the time was set in 1854 by Flying Cloud, exceptional vessel from the Boston shipyards, that reached San Francisco in 89 days and 8 hours, a record that stood for more than 130 years. After several attempts by many boats, the 60-foot Thursday’s Child of Warren Luhrs arrived in San Francisco after 80 days and 20 hours in 1989. In 1994, Isabelle Autissier aboard Ecureuil Poitou took 62 days and 5 hours. Then, in 1998, Yves Parlier on board Aquitaine Innovations has dropped to 57 days, 3 hours, 2 minutes. This was the reference record for Giovanni Soldini and his crew who has been beaten aboard the VOR70 Maserati.

According to the rules of the World Sailing Speed Record Council, the international body that certifies the best travel times of sailing ships on the historical routes of the clipper, the craft must cut the finish line of the route New York-San Francisco right under the Golden Gate Bridge, the city's landmark suspension bridge.

> Boero

Among the various technical sponsor of Maserati boat there is also an Italian company that makes all the difference in the field of paints: Boero. The R & D Center yachting, flagship of the yachting Division, has developed a solution aimed at maximizing performance and low weight. He opted for a mixed cycle consisting of Boero Yacht line products Coating and Venetians Yachting. To properly prepare the surfaces of the hull and topsides, and not burdening the hull structure has been removed the old layers applied, using paint strippers products and/or mechanical cleaning (disking). Furthermore, in order to ensure proper adhesion, it is verified that the surfaces to be painted are also devoid of any previously used additives to reduce friction coefficients. The proposed cycle has seen the use of ADHERPOX of Venetians Yachting, product function is both primer and the peculiarity of being able to be covered even after time with himself and with

antifouling paint without any problem. Antifouling is the SPEEDY CARBONIUM Venetian's Yachting, developed for racing boats, medium hard matrix, based on the use of carbon as active component for improving performance. Usually applied by spraying, is sandable for extra smooth surface. After properly also dealt with superstructure, deck and part of the tree, was used on these parts the DUREPOX SCHEMES 2 k primer, distributed by Venetians Yachting under license Tijanifaruk. This is a bi-component epoxy system-highly pigmented urethane and fast drying For the rug you have used the DUREPOX SCHEMES 2 k primer combined with Powder, non-skid additive has Antiskid properties of Venetians Yachting. For finishing enamel was used to clear Challenger HS Boero Yacht Coatings, developed specifically for the superyacht market offering excellent durability and resistance. Now we sail with gusts to 35 knots, as expected. But the wind is still increasing. Our strategy will be to take advantage of every little change in wind direction in order to tack on scarce and lead us quickly to the West then to the North parallel to the coast of Chile, but not too close. The last mile is the most tiring, because comfort supplies begin to run low and you do not see the hour of arrive: enthusiasm and fatigue struggling between their exhausting spirits, but the crew is determined and squeezes the teeth. At 140 miles north of San Francisco, they enter an area with very light winds, sailing with 6, 7 knots of wind from the North intended to get lighter: "It’s going to be a difficult arrival .- says Giovanni -We can’t wait to be there!” And finally, on February 16, is record! 47 days, 0 hours, 42 minutes and 29 seconds: Giovanni Soldini and the Maserati team cut the finish line under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. “We are happy! – says Soldini – The Golden Route is an historic record, a very important and challenging one”

Art Basel, the famous Swiss contemporary art exhibition, has been holding a winter edition in Miami Beach every year in December since 2002. Sergio Beretta and Mauro Micheli, owners of Officina Italian Design and passionate art collectors themselves, were present at the latest American edition. From a perspective characterized by remarkable curiosity and fascination, they labeled themselves “accidental reporters” and recounted the experience to us here at Barche Magazine.

Pictured on this page, a piece by Gabriel Kuri (Courtesy of Franco Noero, Turin). Simply expressed, the piece is made of everyday objects and recycled materials, chosen not only for their physical properties but also for their special significance. Kuri’s recurring theme is the passage of time and how it leaves indelible traces upon objects in its wake. His works are monuments to its inexorable passage: each element is linked to the next, with no distinction between art and life. Objects and fragments, standing out, highlighted by their position in unusual contexts, seem to take on new meanings. Gabriel Kuri was born in 1970 in Mexico City.

I

t was really fun to be able to wander around through the exhibitors’ booths at the fair, choosing

to examine whatever instinctively intrigued us, totally free of any constraints, and then write about it, without the limitations that restrict professional art critics. Some may appreciate our reflections, while others may be horrified ... but, in any case, just like every year in early December, there we were in Miami. Not for a boat show, but for one of contemporary art: Art Basel Miami Beach. And as anyone who knows us well knows, we prefer art shows to boat shows! Art Basel is always pleasant and interesting. Miami, already the center of the universe, this year even took on some of the glow of Milan: several Italian celebrities showed up there, preferring to appear at America’s foremost contemporary art exhibition rather than frequent the gala premiere at La Scala. Everything there is perfect for a few days’ break from the hecticness of the modern world: plenty of art, a beautiful ocean, the easy-going positivity of the American lifestyle, abundant sunshine and excellent steakhouses. It is an arts festival, compressed into a very few days, supported by a myriad of cultural events, maybe even too many. We focused our visit on the Convention Center, the heart of the event, familiar to nautical professionals as home to the boat show in February. We strolled through the various stands of some of the most important galleries in the world: from Perrotin to Gagosian, from White Cube to Sean Kelly. Here a small selection of some of the works that we liked best. Our only criterion was our personal taste. Ours is a virtual collection in which, in contrast to the real world, money was no object.

Untitled 1971 (Courtesy of Christian Stein, Milan) is a work by Pier Paolo Calzolari, born in Bologna in 1943. In moving between the planes of art installations and real-time actions, the artist shows his direct intent to “contaminate” art with real-life rhythms and materials, as an extension of the Arte Povera movement. He adopts elements coming from the natural and the technological worlds to create autobiographical pieces that mull over what an artist’s role is or should be.

54

BARCHE april 2013

What is art? Reporters ask questions. We had only one to ask the gallery owners we liked. A simple question, but one that made them pretty nervous, with a specific request that the answer not be pat and professional, but direct, brief and instinctual: what is art?Galleria Francesca Minini: “Art is a dizziness that draws us in, an emotion that makes us glad to lose our balance, surprising us by opening our minds to a longing for new perceptions. To observe a tiny detail and think about infinity, about the quest for beauty and the renewing power of creativity.” Many others did not even answer. Maybe our question truly embarrassed them. We would like to give our own definition. Art, in our opinion, is the representation and interpretation of the contemporary world. This response is tough because history can only really be understood when we are looking back on it. Artists often envision these things in advance, looking at modern times as if through the glass of history.

With an Italian father and Austrian mother, she spent much of her childhood in Italy. She studied at the Parisian Académie des Beaux-Arts between 1961 and 1966. Gina Pane derived

a keen interest in the human body at the academy, in its physicality and the constraints that suffering imposes on it. She taught at the École des BeauxArts in Mans from 1975 till 1990 and held workshops related to performances at the Georges Pompidou Center in 1978 and 1979.

A piece by Robert Barry (Courtesy of Alfonso Artiaco, Napoli). Born in New York in 1936, Barry is one of the artists who laid the groundwork for new visual idioms which would later be defined as “Conceptual Art.” It was really more of an attitude than a movement, one which

has greatly influenced artistic development over the last three decades. The artist does not speak about his work but of what his art proposes, emphasizing the mental processes that led to its creation, thus reducing the actual physical space the work takes up to a minimum.

Art and yachting Both of these worlds can be seen in similar lights. Boats often, perhaps now more than ever, are viewed steeped in negative connotations seen as status symbols for flaunting wealth, power and social position. Art, too, can be perceived negatively as ostentation. Some collectors indeed surround themselves with artworks, even magnificent ones, just to show off their oftimes non-existent culture. However, the true essence of yachting lies in owning a boat, living the sea-faring life, sharing this space of serenity and pleasure with friends and observing the land from a different perspective. Collecting art, too, can be a way to cultivate pleasure in our lives. Most people will never own a boat because the everyman’s “affordable” boat, which some boating magazines insist on looking for, just does not exist. Art, on the other hand, passionately sought with knowledge and curiosity, can be enjoyed by anyone for very little money, in museums and private galleries. Art appreciation, the search for beauty and the refinement of taste are slow, on-going processes.

A piece by Becky Beasley (Courtesy of Galleria Francesca Minini, Milano). Born in 1975 in Portsmouth, Becky Beasley lives in St. Leonard-on-Sea in the U.K. An emerging artist, she has already received major recognition. Her personal exhibition, The Outside just closed last September at the Tate Britain (Art Now) in London, subsequent to its run in Milan at the Galleria Francesca Minini (November 2011- January 2012). The works are the result of study and research inspired by her visit to the private apartments in Turin of Italian architect and designer Carlo Mollino.

Art Basel Miami Beach Recently defined in the pages of Vogue as a «Latin American festival, so colorful as to almost be kitsch; abundant in works of contemporary art which is truly what it is meant to be about, although not always for the right reasons», the Miami show is one of the most important art events in the world. The exhibition spaces are varied, starting from the Convention Center, where 31 countries from five continents are represented, with all kinds of works, including some using new technologies. The latest edition featured Karin Sander sculptures of little men made by 3D printer and works by the young Swedish artist Omid Delafrouz featuring pencil drawings transformed into computer-colored diptychs. The fair is divided into two main sections in addition to Video Art, Public Art, Film Art and the Art Basel Conversation Salon. There is also a section called Art Nova, for projects from younger galleries.

She embodies the contrasts between Arab and Western cultures, epitomizing the contradictions that characterize the Moroccan people, balancing a juxtaposition of North African customs and French culture. Clearly influenced by iconic Islamic decorative designs, the artist has developed her Dérivés. Here, the classic, Islamic pattern, the girih, composed of intricate geometric designs, abandon all rational logic and surrender to the canvas, randomly, driftingly, bringing situational practices to the pictorial surface, interweaving once again elements of French avantgarde art with vestiges of the Arab collective memory.

Who knows, maybe one day we can convince the owner of some megayacht to invest in new, emerging artists, instead of the same old famous names, chosen for their show-off value. Maybe eventually a boat owner will decide to create a small collection on a large boat of experimental works that epitomize their own moment in history. We have faith. We still believe.

Art and business This has always been a fixation of ours. The link between art and business has long been evident in the world of luxury fashion. Just think of Yayoi Kusama’s Louis Vuitton shop windows around the world or institutions like Prada or Trussardi who have been investing in art for advertizing for years. The paths of art and shipyards used to cross occasionally, but only rarely, sporadically. Christian Jankowski’s intervention at the Frieze fair of

The “reporters” Mauro Micheli (left in photo), from Adrara San Martino, Bergamo, studied at Bergamo High School of the Arts and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and has been working with Riva since 1984, after winning a bid at the age of 25 for a position as assistant designer in the technical department of the shipyard. His designs are characterized by rigorous and clean classic lines. Of the relationship between the design of yachts and art, he says, “Our goal is to create a synthesis. The higher the form of contemporary art, the more total the synthesis, because contemporary art seeks the essential. If on the one hand, artistic inspiration demands a rupture from schematic thinking, on the other hand, it represents a continuity which leads to a cleanness of forms. I do not see art as being in opposition to design.” Sergio Beretta graduated from Brescia University with a degree in Economics. A great contemporary art lover, he began his professional career in aeronautics, as an air-traffic controller for several European airports while still cultivating his passion for art and design. Together, in 1993, they founded Officina Italian Design. Their studio has traditionally been linked to Riva (all Riva yachts are designed exclusively by Officina), with whom they have been working for over twenty years.

2011 (an interesting art exhibition in London) made a higherpriced model of Aquariva the star of an impressive campaign of media exposure. The craft was not up for sale as a boat per se, but rather as work-of-art-boat to be sold on the art market, through the typical transaction process, regulated by the laws of supply and demand, therefore naturally subject to speculation, where the prices often reflect the whims of influential people. As we read a while ago at the MoMA in New York, “In art, one side moves the cards...the other comes from Mars.” Real art is deaf to the cries of the fishwives of the market. We ourselves created an initiative that brought two of the greatest Italian photographers into the world of boating, with the book Mario Cresci and Gabriele Basilico: images from Riva Shipyards. This book is the result of a meeting between the late Gabriele Basilico*, whose famous perspectives brought order and balance to what seemed like chaos, and Mario Cresci, who, instead, brought color back into details, with shapes and particulars that, since they are often taken out of context, take on a new life and identity.

* Gabriele Basilico, who recently passed away at the age of 69, is considered one of the most important international photographers of the last 40 years.

The work of Rirkrit Tiravanija, an artist of Thai origin born in Buenos Aires in 1961, has been linked for decades to the idea of art based on relationships, exchange, communication and the dynamics of participation. Famous for his performances which include serving food, Tiravanija triggers dynamics which force the viewer to play an active role in the web of relationships that the artist intends to weave through his actions. His work is not only about kitchens, but more generally “the home,” if by that we mean the space where relationships are woven, communication takes place, materials and emotions are exchanged. Living rooms to relax in, “Speakers Corners” for a chat, refreshment centers serving Turkish coffee... Tiravanija's work is full of places and spaces, domestic and private but also public and open for interacting with one another.

scenes or providing the cozy background for a floating romance, boats have been starring in the movies ever since film was invented. Sometimes they even set the scene for humor, especially in classic “Italian-style comedies.” Pazze di Me is destined to take its place among them. The success of the script’s wacky characters and absurd situations has even gone beyond the expectations of Italian star Francesco Mandelli and his side-kick, Fabrizio Biggio. The duo already had a fan base, following their appearance in a couple of other Italian screwball comedies, which, while not particularly well-received critically, achieved a modicum of success at the box office.

The movie sketch that takes place on the Fiart shows Federica, Andrea (Mandelli)’s sister, calling her brother from on board the yacht, asking him to come to the aid of the boyfriend she has been cheating on, who has been fighting with his rival.

Mandelli has now returned to the big screen as the star of Pazze di Me, released earlier this year, directed by Fausto Brizzi who co-wrote the screenplay together with Federica Bosco and Marco Martani. The main character, Andrea, is the only son in a family of women, the father having abandoned the family 25 years earlier. Andrea is surrounded by his domineering mother, three annoying sisters, busybody grandmother, a lazy caregiver and a grumpy female dog. Growing up with an inferiority complex that sapped his ambition, Andrea eventually finds himself in love with Giulia. He decides to hide his baggage-laden family from her and pretends to be an orphan. Naturally, the truth is soon found out, creating a cascade of problems for our hero, victim of these seven women, who are all “crazy about him,” as the title suggests. The movie consists of a series of gags or would-be gags, one of which takes place on the FIart 4Tfour genius, manufactured by the boat builders at Fiart Mare.

Fausto Brizzi Born in 1968 in Rome and with a diploma in Directing from the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (Experimental Cinematography Center), Fausto Brizzi honed his craft in the theatre. After producing his first, prize-winning, short features, he began a career writing screenplays. His debut directing a feature film came in 2006 with The Night before Final Exams, which went on to become a cult favorite (taking in over 15 million euro at the box office). The year after he directed a sequel for which he was awarded the coveted David di Donatello prize for best new director. He has also received numerous awards from national and international festivals, including the Ciak d’Oro and Audience Choice Prizes at the Festival of Annecy, in France. His more recent works include Ex (2009), Men vs. Women (2010) and Women vs. Men (2011) and Love is in the Air (2012).

Outstanding on this particular Fiart Mare model is the cockpit’s functionality, flexibility and elegant furnishings. The carbon fiber t-top provides partial shelter for the U-shaped sofa which can be transformed into an alfresco dinette or a sundeck, thanks to a triple-state, hydraulic mechanism. The cockpit also sports a wet-bar complete with mini-fridge. The interior boasts three double sleeping cabins, two bathrooms with showers and a saloon outfitted with a kitchenette. Upon request, the sailor’s cabin can give direct access to the cockpit. Its fiberglass is made by a resin vacuum infusion process.

Fiart 4Tfour genius has already taken the spotlight in various editions of Pascal Vicedomini’s Ischia Global Film Festival, with Hollywood stars such as Gerry Butler, Kelly Brook, Jeremy Renner, Josh Hartnet, Sting, famous international producers like Mark Canton from Batman and 300 and Paul Haggis from Crash, as well as a host of other TV and show business celebrities all climbing aboard.

Belle de jour PB Design and Flevoship are preparing to launch the 30-meter Belle de Jour hull, the first of a custom designed series by Pieter Beeldsnijder. The vessel has a streaming profile, notwithstanding the ample space designed on the Fly, at the request of the owner. There is space to accommodate a few crew members, but it was designed in order to allow the owner to navigate on his own. On the main deck, the living areas are combined into one open space, including the kitchen. In addition, it is able to take on board a small car.

Acapulco 55 by Christian Grande This 55-meter boat designed by Christian Grande has tense and “muscular” lines, and is intended for an owner who loves both design and sporty performance. In fact, its dynamic style recalls that which is typical of a race car. Externally, the structure is clean and also clearly designed with aerodynamics in mind. A stylistically innovative element is the exit, which from the main deck, leads to the sun deck: this particular model was designed as a tribute to the grand ships of the beginning of the century, characterized by enormous tunnels.

Gozzo,Il Moretto Yachting Ideas is proposing a vessel project that can be completely personalized, which has as a base one of the grand nautical classics: the fishing boat. The boat is 6.2 meters long, and 2.10 meters wide, portable by trailer, weighs 1,100 kg, has CE certification and is constructed entirely in solid wood mahogany. The deck can be completely opened and closed, except for the zone containing the motor.

Astondoa Top Deck 63 by Luiz De Basto Curvelle Yachts Based on the successful 110’, quaranta design, whose launch is imminent, the “Plus USA” shows off the same fluid lines by in house Italian designer and stylist Mauro Gamboi. Originally conceived by request from an American client, the Curvelle design team have refined the concept of “informal living”. “Americans tend to be less formal in their approach to boating” states Kevin Ralph, North American representative for Curvelle Yachts. Indeed the US version of the “Plus” features the eat-in, “country galley” forward on the “living deck”, which not only allows for a fantastic vantage point, with a 180 degree view forward, but also offers access to a large dining area on the raised foredeck. The Curvelle naval architects, Incat Crowther, have also redesigned the hull form, allowing for a shallower draft to allow more extensive cruising in the Bahamas.E.P.

At the Miami boat show, the Astondoa unveiled the project for the versatile Top Deck 63, designed by Luiz de Basto. It is essentially a day boat, but with the comfort of the top of the line yachts. With the external walls and folding platform, the vessel is able to offer 100 square meters in space, to pass the day at the anchor. In addition, its limited draught (one meter) and its IPS engines make it easy to navigate everywhere.

Eidsgaard Design per Benetti There are two new projects – one 70 meter and one 90 meter – that the Benetti shipyard commissioned to the London studio of Eidsgaard Design, specialized in luxury superyachts. The first is characterized huge interior volumes , distinctive exterior envelope, and an

absolutely innovative disposition of the service core, to the advantage of the privacy of guests. The 90-meter has a owner’s area located over 5 decks, 200 sqM double height main salon and 179 sqm owners cabin. Obviously, a spa , cinema and 6.5-meter pool will also be included.

The first day of the Miami International Boat Show, Cigarette and Mercedes AMG have unveiled their new designs—the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive and the Cigarette AMG Electric Drive, both painted in an eye-catching neon lime with black accents. The Cigarette hull’s new design is based on the 38foot Top Gun and powered by two symmetrically mounted powertrains, each with six compact permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors. When it’s all added up, those 12 motors provide a max output of 2,220 hp and 2,213 pounds of torque. For more information, visit cigaretteracing.com. E.P.

a ballast of 1,150 kg, with a ratio of about 50% between the two. Sheets and mainsails are operated through switches and the winches are electric.

An experienced yacht owner has commissioned Setzer Yacht Architects to develop preliminary design documentation and specs for an approximately 38metre, modern "Yachtfish" superyacht that is currently out for tender from select builders. Intended for cruising in the South Pacific, the design will feature an enclosed pilothouse, a hardtop tower station, a full-sized working cockpit, a large aft deck, and a widened beam for additional interior volume and accommodations. Designed for aluminum construction, the yacht will support both long distance passagemaking and fast cruising to fishing grounds, with top speeds of approximately 24 knots.

three-deck boat designed by Savona shipyard – their sixty-first

vessel to be exact, and the twelfth boat that is more than 41 meters long – where the vast windows were chosen as a characteristic element of the outlines. The shipyard is very satisfied, so much so that Roberti Zambrini, CEO of Mondo Marine, stated: «The new profile of the yacht allowed us to create much more expansive internal profiles, especially on the deck, where we were able to insert vertical glass windows. Okko is the product of a remarkable work of enhancement and obsessive attention to detail». Giorgio Vafiadis, in agreement with the owner, took care of both the external design and the interior furnishings. Beginning with the exterior of Okko, this is characterized by refinished furniture and designed with the same care as the interior and the well-furnished relaxation areas. Specifically with the intention to expand and merge internal and external spaces, for example, in the lunch area of the upper deck the same decorative cushions were used as those in the indoor rooms. Vafiadis claims to have met with the owner for a bit and decided to give the design this sense of “continuity” because of the particular tastes of the owner, who is not a huge fan of diversity, but is always looking for a common denominator between things. The fly, on the other hand, is characterized by a small pool at the stern, a mobile bar and a relaxation zone at the prow. The swimming pool is located in a raised sun area that is refined with cushions. At the center of the boat, there is a lunch area, below the roll-bar, protected at the

The interior The design is centered upon the search for continuity, of chromatic uniformity and based on a harmonious game of light, with a careful choice of materials: a particular wood essence is dominant, the frakè – chosen paper by paper and then organized so that the grains match – which makes these rooms decisively eccentric and original, but also warm and welcoming. The stern of the main deck accommodates a salon and lunch area, in an open space which is very luminous thanks to the large windows. There are 3 sofas in this area.

ho knows what kind of skepticism Norberto Ferreti

was up against when he announced to the Americans that he was about to present a new line of lobster boats. Lobster boats are like Belgium waffles, hot dogs and baseball. Part of the American domain. Nobody could even imagine claiming possession of those things or imitating them. And Mochi Craft, in fact, did not copy, but simply reinterpreted a classic of Made in USA navigation, adding a modern touch to it. When all is said and done, probably even the most skeptical Americans must admit that the “Dolphins” of Norberto Ferreti represent a kind of boat that has never existed before.

Once the panel is lowered, thanks to the hydroelectric movement, the driving console results much less cumbersome, allowing those on the flybridge to enjoy the view of the sea around them.

82

BARCHE aprile 2013

If the lobster boats are a synonym for Spartan navigation, the Dolphins, on the other hand, have made comfort into a creed to follow by any means. The latest model is a revisitation of the 64 Fly. It is called the Dolphin 64’ Cruiser, it has the same hull and essentially extends the flybridge. In order to remain faithful to the creed of comfort, it is necessary to increase the available space. Mochi succeeded in doing this by creating a wider surface that extends to cover the whole cockpit. In this way, there are not only more square meters on the flybridge, but even the internal spaces benefit from an increase in space. In the sleeping area, this availability transformed into a new layout. The owner’s cabin is still at the center of the boat with a bed positioned slightly diagonally in order to make it easier to move around. The bathroom, on the other hand, is the

same one already prevalent in the Ferretti Group models and uses all the vertical space of the room. Below deck, there are two more cabins as well as the VIP room at the prow with private bathroom, and a room on the left with parallel beds. Here there is also a bathroom which can be accessed from the cabin, as well as from the hallway in the sleeping area. On the main deck, there is a living room that has plenty of space to divide into dining, living and pilot areas. The kitchen is located inside, which can be accessed three different ways: from the lateral walkway, thanks to a sliding door, from the crew cabin and the engine room which are located under this and, obviously, from the dinette. The cockpit is protected from the inside by the flybridge and benefits largely from the increase in space. The helm station is located at the center. Abaft the seat is the mast, which is also where the antennas are mounted. Particularly spot-on is the retractable dashboard console. The vessel is powered by an electro-hydraulic control located in the helm area. There are two advantages here. The first is that the panel is very much vertical and therefore the plotter and displays are not affected by sunlight and guarantee an excellent inclination for the visibility of the display. Another advantage is that it does not hinder sight. The 64’ Cruiser, compared to the previous 64’ Fly, was also modified with regards to motorization: this vessel contains a MAN engine, rather than MTU. Those in use during our test were two 1,268-horsepower V8 engines. The standard equipment still includes two V8 MTU engines, but of 1,102horsepower. There is nothing left to do then, but to test how well the boat functions during navigation. We are in the Gulf 84

of La Spezia on a lukewarm and pleasant winter day. There is no wind or even waves. We attempt acceleration, but as the lever is electronic, there is a notable delay. By now they are all like this. The advantage is that they do not make mistakes; the disadvantage is that one must wait a few seconds before the boat reacts. The maneuverability is pretty good, in part thanks to the ZF SteerCommand system which allows closing turns within small spaces, and ensures route stability and ease of maneuvering at low speeds. There are no waves, therefore we look for those created by traffic entering and leaving the port. During the test, there are no frigates or even cargo ships in sight. The waves are therefore moderate, and navigating through them seems stable and secure. Most likely a result of, besides the hull, the superstructure with the extended flying bridge which increases the total weight of the vessel. We were not very satisfied with high noise level, especially in the owner’s cabin. Notwithstanding that the crew cabin is located between this room and the engine room, the noise level reaches almost 80 decibels already at minimum planing, reaching 87 dbA at maximum. Finally, a reflection upon consumption and autonomy. At maximum velocity the two propellers consume 461 liters/hour, while at cruising speed the consumption remains slightly below 400 liters/hour. Although the fuel tank capacity is that of 3,600 liters, in autonomy this translates into 230 or 250 miles at best. This is not a small value for the Mediterranean, but lobster boats are by definition vessels adapt to long-distance cruising. A few miles more without having to stop at a distributor would have definitely been useful.

The main deck is equipped with a sundeck and a small U-shaped sofa in the prow area. When searching for privacy, perhaps while moored at the dock, this area is certainly appreciated.

T

he Absolute 40 ST is a boat for a day out, with two Volvo stern drives and the option

to assemble a joystick. It is easy to maneuver even for those who are not exactly experts. The considerable advantage of the 40 STL is its classification. Without supplements, it reaches 9.97 meters, and is therefore categorized as a boat. The pleasure of a day out is ensured by the deck, which has two big sun decks and a U-shaped sofa for 10 people. The sun decks have backs adjustable to 3 positions, and the one at the stern measures about 2 meters and 15 centimeters in width. The length measures about 2 meters, thanks to a design which envisages a sort of “widening” towards the stern. Unlike luxury tenders or very sporty boats, the deck is quite “friendly”. In order to climb on board it is not necessary to step on the sun deck at the stern or the cushions, or even to climb over seats. All thanks to the bathing platform and a telescopic boating ladder. The cockpit is well delimited and protected. This is another more “familiar” and less “sporty” characteristic. The rather high walls and the gunwale ensure a walkway which is always protected. Moving around on board is simple, hand rails can be found all over and the gangway is wide enough so that will not be necessary move forward like a tight-rope walker. The volume of the lockers is more than sufficient, and under the cockpit seats there is space for an auto-inflatable raft. Even the other equipment, such as the life preserver, have their own compartments. Below the planking level of the cockpit there is a large locker. It is not big enough to act as a garage for the tender, but it definitely comes close. There is room to fit equipment for snorkeling, scuba diving, nautical skiing or any other aquatic sport.

Below deck, the layout is that of a cruising vessel, ideal especially for a family with two children. The comfort is excellent, thanks to a 183-centimeter tall dinette. There is a queen-sized bed, able to accommodate two people. There is no lack of closets and jambs, a sign that the person who designed the internal space took well into consideration the demands of those who take cruises, even if short ones. There is not only a transformable dinette, but a full-out cabin. It is beneath the cockpit, but even in this case the livability is notable. The second advantage is that of the dimensions. Besides the double berth and the full-length closet, there is also space for a third bed, depending on the size of the family. Here, one can find both comfort and space.

The test In order to test the 40 STL, we left the Marina Genova Aeroport with about 10 wind knots and 30-centimeter waves. Nothing

The below deck living area is 1.83 meters in height in the dinette, with a V-shape sofa that converts into a 190 x 140 cm double berth. Below, the full beam cabin: there is a height of 239 cm at the entrance and beneath the double berth a height of 82 cm. To the right, the well delimited and protected cockpit with rather high walls. On the lower left, the kitchen corner.

exceptional, but sufficient to test the quality of the hull, which is the same as that of the Absolute 40 Fly. The motorization range is very vast and envisages gas or diesel Volvo engines. On our boat, there were two D6 330 hp each. Let’s start with the things that did not impress us at all: the visibility. The deck is open, and if desired there is an optional rigid hardtop that leans against an inox structure to protect the dashboard and cockpit, but not in our case. The only thing we have in front of us is a windshield. That is the problem. The glass is inserted in a rather voluminous vetroresin frame and seems to be designed purposely to hinder the helmsman’s sight. My “total height” slightly exceeds a meter and 80 centimeters. Maybe someone taller would be able to see the horizon better, but I don’t think that is a very common stature. Even seated above the pilot seat, the visibility does not improve by much. It would be advisable to change the windshield dimensions and maybe also tail off the glass frame a bit. At sea, however, the vessel functions very impressively. There is a bit of ripple that could give slight discomfort, but not with this hull. We also try to briskly invert the route to the maximum velocity, something that should never be done. The hull is glued to the water. Speeds are also excellent. With 660 hp we arrive at a maximum slightly below 40 knots. Only 5 seconds are needed to enter planing and 29 to reach full rpm. The version with the 300 cv D4 pair provides speeds that are more than sufficient. What is surprising about the two D6’s are the consumptions. 37 total liters are enough to enter planing, and with the gas lever completely lowered, consumption reaches about 135 liters. The highest horsepower is what makes the quantity grow to a sufficient amount in order to reach 30 knots of speed, and the consumption is about 80 liters/hour. A speed of 30 knots is more than enough, especially for those who make use of the boat for day trips and want to move rapidly from port to harbor. During cruising, it is possible to go down to 25 knots with a consumption of 60 liters. The Absolute 40 STL is definitely a broad vessel. It satisfies someone looking for a high-speed luxury tender for a day out, but also a family or group of friends who wants to take short trips without fainting at the gas pump or high maintenance prices. And finally, thanks to the agility guaranteed by the Volvo joystick, it is ideal for those looking for their first boat.

>

Above, the vessel photographed from above: the sun deck appears and in the upper part, there is the bathing platform, taking advantage of most of the space, even creating more space than there really is. The consumption is contained, with values of an inflatable raft with a powerful outboard motor. But here, we are on board a 12-meter vessel, classified as a boat, as the hull does not exceed 10 meters.

he Antares series represents a solid enterprise within the entire line of

motor vessels produced by the French Bénéteau shipyard. Designed with the objective of mixing sporting and cruising purposes, the series is subdivided into two different ranges, which differ from each other in type of motorization (outboard and inboard-outboard), and therefore in size. At the top of the outboard motor series, which is available in four versions, is the 8.80 model (see the test in the September 2012 issue of Barche), followed by the 7.80, object of our test in this number. The vessel originates with the 7.50 project. With the arrival of the new architecture staff headed by Patrice Sarrazin (the man who revisited the Antares range), new technical solutions and layouts were adapted, lending the ship more vigor and charm. The objects of renovation were the internal spaces in particular and the deck in general, where the three sliding glass doors which regulate access to the cabin, and the windshield replacing the centrally divided one in the 7.50 model stand out, in addition to various embellishments of the model. The wardroom is the main area of the hull, as it includes the cockpit, the kitchen corner and dinette, and offers direct access to the master bedroom with a separate bathroom included. The architecture incorporates a driving console to the right and on the opposite side, a complete sofa and wood table which seats four people. By lowering the table and adding the central cushion, the whole thing instantly becomes a bed spot for two people. On the floor, two large lockers offer direct access to the bilge. To the left of the steering console, one can descend to the main bedroom with private bathroom. The cockpit measures about 80 centimeters deep with assembled 130 centime-

ter wide lockers. As mentioned before, the lockers are removable and can therefore, if necessary, be left on the floor making use of most of the walking space, except for the central one which leans forward to leave space for the motor when it is raised. Uniting the lockers (optional) with the addition of an aft cockpit closing Dune, a single sun deck is obtained. At the prow the anchor locker is available which includes the electric pulley and accommodates the cable length, whereas the “iron” stays in its external position suspended by the bow slide ring.

The test The Antares 7,80 that we tested in France, in La Ciotat as guests of Bénéteau, was motorized with the maximum power allowed by its classification (category C and D), or rather a 150 horsepower outboard motor, in our case the Honda equipped with a 151/4 cm diameter and 19 pitch propeller. The sun accompanies us during the hydrodynamic test, along with a bit of wind, which gently whips the waves creating small crests, which do not exceed 50 centimeters. During the test, the crew is composed of four adults, including myself whereas in the reservoirs on board we have 70 liters of water and about 150 liters of fuel (full tank reaches 200 liters). A significant weight, also considering the fact that the vessel weighs 2 tons when empty. This ensures that the ratio of hull weight to power used, expressed in kW is 18.13, which may seem to be a burden, however we realize while navigating that this a positive and more than satisfactory combination, without infringing too much upon the final price of the hull and containing fuel consumption. By the end of the test, we will have succeeded in consuming no more than 56 liters/hour with the motor at 5,900 rpm! The vessel does not adapt the Air Step project, but in any event, the navigation is fluid and discretely accommodating in rough seas,

even if the planing phase, even considering the total on board weight, expresses itself only after 8 seconds from the moment in which the lever is thrusted. The silence in the pilot station is quite remarkable, whether the sliding doors are open or closed. Our sound count reaches a maximum of 83 dBA from 5,000 and below. The minimum planing value is maintained until 10 knots, with the motor at 3,100 rpm, and from this regime we use almost 22 seconds to reach the peak speed of 32 knots, obtained with the trim regulated to 20%. If you are a fan of sporty steering, you will be satisfied reaching 32 knots, if on the other hand you would like to navigate at a more comfortable velocity, a more adequate speed would be at about 5,000 rpm at 26 knots, consuming slightly over 40 liters/hour. The hull is affected by a minimum rolling, standing still and in displacement, while the depth of the hull is felt more when changing direction closing the range, even if the skid is always well controllable and manageable. The option to remove or add levels and lockers ensures that the deck is able to be completely modulated according to ones demands.

>

Stable, enjoyable, intuitive when driving, the Antares 7.80

proves itself to be a versatile vessel even in its response to various maneuvers and types of driving, thanks in particular to hydraulic steering which cancels out the right-handed tendency of the propeller. 99

The consumption with this boat/motor combination has a rather steady value. It is possible to maintain a range over 200 nautical miles at 5,000 rpm, a value that is reduced only in the last two speeds that we succeed in reaching, 5,500 rpm and 5,800 rpm.

he model presented by Yamaha Motor Italia/Cantieri Capelli for the cur-

rent season is positioned in the range slightly higher than the 626. In addition to 30 extra centimeters, on board the 650 Tempest it is possible to enjoy the layout designed by the engineer Roberto Curto, who gave a sporty touch to this small boat, harmonizing the prow lines thanks to the adoption of tubes reduced in diameter at the forepart. The aesthetic impact is very pleasant, even from the perspective of the shade, which combines the clear colors of the tubes with slightly darker inserts and cushions. On the deck, the spaces are studied attentively: the stern sofa is installed above the main service locker, equipped with a back which can be folded towards the motor and integrated with an optional kit to obtain a second sun deck, extendible until the back of the leaning post. The sun deck takes advantage of the upper locker area; there are two cushions, and the central one is removable. The console is central and equipped with a perimetral inox lifeline with large handles at the very bottom, smoked glass windshield, inclined floor with a serigraphed panel for the instruments, a compass, a check panel and steering wheel equipped with mechanical steering equipment. The lockers available on board are equally distributed throughout the whole space. At the prow, beyond the locker at the anchor, there is a quite deep one in which all of the on board equipment can be stored. At the stern, the biggest locker has room for the battery, the wastewater drain pipes, the onboard installations, and a spare motor, if needed. The main lockers have covers equipped with latches and gas piston valves, that help in both isolating and opening them.

al, or rather the 150-horsepower instead of 200, which represents the best functionality. The day presents us with two knots of wind, a slightly rough sea with waves below 50 centimeters, and sun. On board there are about 120 liters of fuel (the tank contains 220), two staff people and the infallible safety system. The safety cut out plug is attached (which should never be forgotten) and having left the dock, we begin navigating the boat, proceeding with a certain agility inside the port until we reach the entrance. Outside, after having positioned ourselves with the high wall of the port on our plank side, we begin accelerating, which brings us into planing at around 11/12 knots with the motor developing about 2,800 rpm after 5 seconds. In order to exceed 20 knots it is necessary to reach 700 rpm, and at this pace the motor consumes about one liter/mile. The same consumption registers at about 4,000 knots, a regime that gains 5 knots in speed. So, we believe that this could be the most economic and relaxing cruising speed that combines with a great velocity for long navigations, with consumptions that guarantee a total autonomy of about 240 miles. At “full throttle (even if 200 rpm lower compared to the maximum regime declared for the motor) with trim raised to 20%, the GPS signals a velocity of 37.5 knots which even if we don’t have a full load, is still great to navigate with. The sensation while navigating is pleasant, with the leaning post offering support to the loins and a correct distance of the steering wheel, which allows driving natural with tense arms. The windshield does not have a negative effect upon visibility but, to the contrary, contributes positively to wind protection. The hydraulic steering is useful during high-speed direction changes or in port maneuvering, but it is an optional expense. The Tempest 650 is soft on the waves, with the keel functioning well even when cruising at high speeds. On the other hand, it is necessary to pay attention when working on the positive trim, relieving the water /prow friction. In this case, especially when the boat is running low on gas as was the cast during our test, the frontal part requires more control and a bit of experience on the part of the pilot.

orn in 1978, Antonio Ranieri represents the second generation of the shipyard, where he has always lived: «My

brother Salvatore and I, since our childhood have always breathed construction, boats, motorcycles and engines air, so we both have a strong passion for this sector». The official entry in the company dated back to 2003 after having graduated in Law and a work experience in a law firm in Milan. He also attended a postgraduate course at Berkeley University of California, San Francisco, to better approach the management of the shipyard. Today he is also delegate for the regional affairs in the management body of Catanzaro Confindustria. What is the company's strategy to face this crisis? The times Europe is living are characterized by bad economic trends, due to an excessive indebtedness of nations, with an impact on the population and, therefore on consumption. The boating industry is going through a certain decline in sales, mainly due to a too strict austerity policy, which tends to depress consumption rather than encourage it with more liberal financial fiscal and economic policies. Within this negative macroeconomic environment, it is important to highlight that

our yard, despite the effects of the above, continues to carry on a business philosophy characterized by product innovation and the constant search for technical and design advanced solutions, directed to investments and to improve our products and we believe that the market is judging our approach very favorably. Which are the main countries you are addressing to, considering the recent changes in the “geographical nautical” world? Our main markets are Europe in general, and countries such as Turkey, China and Thailand, where we are promoting our boats

Pietro Ranieri is supported by his sons Salvatore and Antonio, who take care of the commercial and administrative duties. Pietro Ranieri follows each stage of the production process. Below, an Atlantis 28, 8.30 meters long (maximum power 600 hp).

Antonio Ranieri in the hope that “the made in Italy “quality can always be winning. How many models are you producing every year? How many of these are intended for export? The company has a fleet of 26 production models, all designed both for the Italian market and for export. How many employees do you have? Have you made cuts following the crisis? The site occupies a little less than 50 work units between employees and the production staff. Despite the crisis period we haven’t decreased the number of employees, thanks to a diversification of markets and production. Are you planning to change the type of boats? No, we never thought to change the type of production, but to broaden and diversify it to embrace a wider range of clientele. Today we have three lines, Open, Sundeck and Cabin, designed for the simple

daily pleasure (Open), excursions and sport fishing (Sundeck and Cabin). A year and a half ago we introduced a Clf line dedicated to a clientele that likes sport fishing but also the pleasure craft intended as the possibility of the most demanding navigation by spending whole days on board, even during winter. How many funds do you invest in research and development every year? Is this an area important for you at the moment? Our company has always given vital importance to research, innovation and development department. We are currently committed to searching more advanced technical solutions that can provide greater comfort and performance to our watercrafts. What are your plans for the coming years? Are you planning to move the production to a foreign country? Our future plans do not foresee any changes at the top: we will continue to be an international company managed by its family owners and we are not going to relocate the production to other countries. We think that you can still work in Italy very well and we want to continue to do so.

The company selects the materials from all over the world thanks to a purchasing office managed by Pietro Ranieri. A direct control over every single boat, strictly Italian production, research, innovation and development are among the main ingredients of Soverato shipyard.

«A key feature of the company is to be a group of companies with an international mind but with genuine family values at the basis that, said in a few words, mean , challenges in the international markets with a strong cultural tradition».

t has been trudged for a bit of years, unlike the Golden Age when it grew dramatically. The Seatec has always been a B2B trade

show dedicated to accessories and subcontracting. In a short time the idea was well welcomed by the industry. For 11 years, it has been hold in Carrara, so very closed to a “Mecca of shipbuilding as Viareggio, the perfect place to propose accessories and subcontracting. It is certainly not the fault of those who organize it, but the industry is, as they say, "repositioning". Some are gone, many have other things to think about, even if they are businesses located a few kilometers away from Carrara. There was a positive sign during the three days of exhibition and it is an important signal. Among the pavilions there were not only the exhibitors and commanders of large yachts, but also several purchasing managers of construction sites. Why is this data so important? Because in recent years the exhibitors at

Seatec often had claims with the shipyards. The shipyards were late or did not pay at all and accessory companies and plants struggled not to say the worse. The consequence was that the purchasing managers and supply of construction did not set foot in Carrara because they risk meeting only people asking to be paid for what they had already provided. To see them again this year means that it may be true that the industry is "repositioning". It does not mean that all debts have been paid, but at least that a repayment plan has been proposed and accepted. If suppliers and shipyards have made peace, we can be reasonably optimistic. From the point of view of products, of course, it was not a fair where, at every corner, there was a novelty. There was something new, however, in spite of the fact that the exhibitors had decreased compared to last year.

Below, the installation Tile by the artist Fabbian, inspired by the sea. Located in the Agora area, it was set up in an area of 8 by 4 meters, and some tents of different heights and widths, which created a sinuous movement like the waves of the sea, were the protagonists. The color of the modules and the chiaroscuro of solids and voids of the individual tents with a few glasses recalled the glow of the sun reflecting on the sea rippled by the wind.

Tablets, smart phones, iPads and iPhones are increasingly welcome guests on board. There are many applications for these devices, primarily those made by companies that produce maps that allow to use the tablet as a remote plotter. The problem is that these tools are not born to be at sea and they suffer much from the saline. They need to be protected to avoid damages, but all the protective devices that have appeared so far have prohibitive costs. The covers for Pad Armor-X and iPhone came from England. They are IPX7 watertight, which means that they are able to withstand for 30 minutes immersed in a meter depth. IPX7, so as to speak, is the highest standard that the chart plotter installed on board can offer. Additionally, with the Armor-X cover the features of tablets and smart phones are not compromised. The touch screen and even the built-in camera in the instrument can be safely used. www.fbyachting.it

Holiday on ice It is a “must for any cruising boat. How can you go on vacation without an ice maker? Also the open boats with smaller sizes offer it as an option and often the owners choose to install it in the cocktail cabinet. The direct consequence of this trend is that these accessories have been greatly improved both from the point of view of electricity consumption and from that of efficiency. The Acm 25 Marine Barka has a built-in tank that makes the ice maker independently from the hydraulic system on board. The advantages are two: the first is that it does not consume the water reservoir of the boat that is not always available in large quantities; and the second is that, considering it does not immediately transform water into ice, it is more efficient and therefore needs less water for the manufacture of ice. It produces up to 10 kg of ice per day, or 500 cubes. The water in the tank can be loaded manually and the level indicator is located on the front panel of the ice maker. www.barka.it

Team Italia

A multi-touch dashboard Team Italy in Carrara presented I-Bridge MT Futura, an integrated navigation system that combines the multi-touch technology of I-Bridge and the functionality of the I-Chart table. Every owner and every commander of mega yachts can then customize the dashboard. The system is based on a series of processors which operate independently from each other thereby, thus assuring a high level of reliability and security of the system. I-Bridge also handles all those who are defined under systems such as radar, plotter, navigation data, engine data, machinery monitoring. The system, thanks to its sensors, adapts itself to the situation required, by proposing, in fact, a dashboard management functional to the needs of the master and the ship owner. IBridge can be controlled remotely from a distance and can be "upgraded" to have a dashboard constantly updated with the latest technology. www.team-italia.it

Literally this is a "sacrificial mechanical fuse" that is mounted inside a rubber shock absorber. In practice, Sailfuse breaks in place of the deck equipment when this reaches the 75-80% of its break load. Inside Sailfuse there is a Dyneema strop restraint which has a very high tensile strength. Dirk Kreidenweiss

The value of... Constance We met with the CEO of Interboot, the German trade show dedicated to the world of aquatic sports and boating. This latest edition was seen by 92,000 visitors, on par with previous years’ numbers, truly a triumph in these difficult times by Diana Merlino

H

is name is Dirk Kreidenweiss and he is at the helm of the Friedrichshafen boat show. The lat-

est edition of the show, which prides itself on active, public participation, was held last September. This edition hosted 489 exhibitors spread over seven pavilions and saw over 100 craft participating in sea trials (on Lake Constance) as well as a host of parallel events. In 2012 you decided to improve the exhibition concept. How did that work out? All we did was gather market data to optimize the layout so that specific sectors could be concentrated in particular parts of the various pavilions. The results were remarkable: less distance to cover, greater interchange between professionals, spaces full but not crowded, a more welcoming atmosphere. What do you think were the main attractions of the show? We are the largest in-water boat show in Germany. We have vast outdoor areas at our disposal, some of which dedicated exclusively to new models and products. Another of our strong points is the intensity of our calendar of events, giving visitors a taste of hundreds of different aspects of boating and aquatic sports. Since our goal is to involve the public as much as possible, we have organized regattas on the lake, (free) piloting lessons for women, Adac power boat lessons for kids, wakeboard exhibitions and much more. The port has become the nerve center for the event, the only one of its kind in the whole country. Not only is it particularly lovely, it also provides direct access to the water. The Liquid Quarter Mile attracts a lot of people. The idea to concentrate sea trials on a quarter of a mile

stretch of water has proved to be a winner for every point of view. It’s fast, suspenseful and exciting. New this year was the E-Boat forum, focused on electrical propulsion for boats. In 2011 you had 92,700 visitors. In 2012, the number was 92,200. That’s a great result, given the current economic situation. What kind of numbers do you foresee for 2013? We would be really pleased if we managed to maintain – as we are hoping - this level of public participation, along with all the big and little innovations presented every year. Having a stable German nautical industry behind us would be a tremendous help. Generally speaking, what do you think the current situation portends for the boating industry, both in Germany and in Europe as a whole? It is a critical moment for the entire market. Interest in boating has been on the decline since the mid-’90s. In 2012 German production was down 20%, although this was more a reflection

of the general economic climate than the boating industry per se. in any case, the German boating industry remains a safe harbor, compared to the situation in the countries of southern Europe. We still have a certain level of demand that has been dwindling elsewhere. In addition, a law has just been passed here allowing people to pilot boats of up to 15 hp without a license. This will encourage people who have always been curious about boats to actually try them out and let a lot more boat-lovers make their dreams come true. Which are the most interesting markets in the world, and why? Central Europe, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, for instance. They are more stable and reliable than most others. Certainly, the prospects are high for the Chinese market, too. Over the next 10 years the number of boat owners is expected to rise from 1500 to over a hundred thousand. And there is always, of course the United States.

«When you are running a boat show, you always have to be a step ahead if you intend to succeed. You need to anticipate all the needs of every single visitor so that the visitors, in turn, can help you optimize your event».

hat do you expect from the next edition of the Festival

and what is the central moment of the event? This edition of the Yacht Med Festival will experience a further leap in quality in the structuring of projects and concrete proposals for revitalizing the Sea Economy. The main stages of analysis are different and all connected by a single issue. On the one hand, the first Conference of the Italian Nautical Associations system and the first General States of the Chamber of Commerce on the Economy of the Sea which will put at the center of debate, the chamber system, the only representative of the entire panorama of businesses and irreplaceable protagonist in the definition of economic and welfare policies in Italy. On the other hand, the second national forum on the Sea Economy, the only time in Italy where the highest institutional representatives, employers' associations and the different sectors involved, meet. The debate focused on the identification of new analysis criteria and indicators that can highlight the real value of this important economy. The first exhibition of Italian marinas has a great interest for its originality and because it will lead to the central issue, essential for nautical tourism. Is this festival intended for a regional audience or a wider one? The Yacht Med Festival is now a national landmark. It is so for both operators and professionals and visitors from all over Italy. Obviously, the inter-basin from Lazio and Campania is the most represented, thanks to the central position of Gaeta. But this

year we are working to have a greater participation from the Mediterranean. Surely our promotional activities abroad, especially in France, have helped us to approach ourselves more effectively to international catchment area. What are the characteristics that distinguish it from the previous editions? Sea trials, meetings, events etc.? The strength and innovation of the Yacht Med Festival model will obviously be revived. This year we gather in a single exhibition format yachting and other areas traditionally linked to the sea such as tourism, fisheries, education, ports, logistics and transport, the promotion of local products, crafts and artistic heritage, history and culture. The conferences will focus on all key issues related to the economy of the sea. In addition to what previously mentioned, it will host a national conference on transport policy, in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Navigation, the third edition of the National Conference of Nautical Institutes, the third Greenitaly road show with Symbola Foundation, a seminar with the Ministry of Environment on marine Protected Areas and much more still to be determined. As always, the village will be animated by tastings, performances, educational workshops, for all the days of the Festival. So far, has been there a good response of interest? Do you believe that participation will be more or less extensive than in the last edition? From the point of view of exhibitors, we had an increase of 50% of requests for participation, confirming the growth trend. Unfortunately we cannot please everyone, but we can guarantee a selection on quality. As for the visitors, we can, of course, only rely on a positive feeling given by our contacts and recent investments at Boat shows in Cannes, Genoa and Rome. Last year, we registered more than 186,000 visitors. This year we hope to do better, of course. This initiative makes an important contribution to the devel-

opment of nautical culture in our country. Do you believe that this process is well under way? We have always believed that we should start from the culture of the sea to regain the leading role of Italy that is part of its DNA. We need to reconnect young people to the sea and its crafts, help to enhance the cultural resources we have, confront ourselves on general issues that affect the entire population. The Yacht Med Festival may be the right place to do it. The Third International Conference “The Mediterranean in poetry”, the exhibition of artistic events, the rediscovery and tasting of typical Mediterranean products, exhibitions and musical events, courses and workshops related to sustainability, fisheries and innovation are just some of the cultural events planned in April. In addition to these, the second International Festival of the Sea publishing by the Sea International Library in Rome, where the National Conference "Piri Reis Map and AncientMediterranean and beyond", sponsored by Unesco, will take place. Boating in this sense plays a major role. At this time the nautical is suffering for the tendency to identify the figure of the boaters with that of tax evader. What can be done about this? We must return the sea to the everyday life of people and in particular to young people, if we want them to become the first users. The battle against the parking fee has taken an even greater value with respect to the specific issue it has faced, because it has united all the realities operating in the Sea Economy around some shared principles such as the value of nautical tourism, the defense of the undertakings and, of course, the fight against the identification of pleasure boating with the evader. Definitely an institutional work in this direction is essential, but it is right to start first of all from us. The Yacht Med Festival works substantially for this, to bring sea to the center of the "system" country.

What is the role of the Chamber of Commerce in the area and, in particular, in the water district? The work of the Chamber of Commerce in the province of Latina goes hand in hand with the one carried out at regional, interregional and national levels. Having taken the responsibility to guide Unionfiliere boating, the supply chain of Italian Chambers of Commerce related to boating and the part of the Council of Italian Assonautica in addition to those of Unioncamere Lazio and Royal First, the understanding of Chambers of Commerce Lazio and Campania, is the recognition of an important project carried out in recent years. The bay of Boka

Boka Bay, which is located on the south side of the Adriatic Sea, has one of the most distinctive and evocative landscapes of the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of four small bays surrounded by mountains with heights between 1,000 and 1,700 meters, which arise directly from the water. The different coves are connected by narrow channels, thus giving birth to one of the most beautiful natural harbors in Europe. Really impressive feature is its natural fjord dotted with beautiful bays, touristic resorts and historic sites. This area, founded by the Illyrian tribes, became part of the Roman Empire in 168 BC and since then French, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarians and Venetians left their cultural mark. There is a written record of a port founded in this area as far back as 1361,but it was only towards the end of the nineteenth century that admiral Maximilian Daublebsky von Sterneck arranged a naval base in Tivat, giving way to a century of great expansion.

The moorings are intended to both the boats based there and those ones sailing in the waters of Montenegro on passage or temporary routes. Among the offered services there are duty-free supply, security and assistance 24/24, offices that can provide full logistic support for all needs, a yacht club that organizes social events, regattas, races and sailing schools, shops, bars and restaurants, art galleries, day spas and beauty centers, fashion boutiques and recreational facilities, including a sports club and Mar Lido, a 64-meter long swimming pool, plus a lounge bar created by the famous British architect Richard Hywel Evans . Furthermore the port has just begun an expansion plan to double the number of berths from 245 to 490, whose completion is scheduled for spring-summer 2014. Its coast, 300 km long, extends from the border with Croatia, at the entrance of the Gulf of Kotor, up to that with Albania, represented by the Bojana River, which connects the Adriatic Sea with Scutari Lake . This is one of the most beautiful parts of the Adriatic coast, with numerous headlands, bays, islets and with the deepest creek of the Mediterranean Sea, the Gulf of Kotor. The clear sea is rich in flora and fauna, with 116 species of fish and shellfish. The climate is Mediterranean with long hot summers and mild, wet winters, with an average summer temperature of 27.4 °C (maximum up to 37 °C) and with 246 sunny days a year. The swimming season begins in May,when sea temperatures exceed 20 °C and lasts until October, with the average sea temperature in summer of 24 °C and a maximum of up to 28 °C.

131 The port is becoming a luxury marina with the most comprehensive offering of the Adriatic Sea and the Municipality of Tivat boasts one of the most stable budget in Montenegro, with a low unemployment rate.

Fraser Yacht Chartering a vessel of this type, envisaged specifically for that purpose, is a dream of many: over 80 meters of iron and aluminum in length and 30 bed spaces with 11 double cabins, 5 single cabins and a 30 person staff. The suites are all equipped with sophisticated entertainment systems, and among other things available for guests on board, there is the

Gymnasium & Spa room, Yoga and Pilates studio, massage treatment room, and both inside and outside Jacuzzis. Even the garage has everything needed for amusement: four tenders, four Yamaha water motors, two windsurfs, diving, water skiing, fishing, snorkeling equipment, and a kneeboard. It still travels to the Caribbean, but will be in the West Mediterranean for the whole summer.

Forzatre The Lavagna Company offers this Abacus 62 Flybridge to organize cruises between families or friends along the coasts of Liguria, Corsica and Sardinia. Inside, there is a spacious owner’s cabin with closet and dresser, a vip room at the prow and one room with two bunk beds, all equipped with private bathrooms, accommodating a total of six people. For sport and on board activity there is a 3.20 tender with outboard motor, barbecue, 26” LCD TV with a sky decoder and DVD reader in the salon, a 22” LCD TV with DVD player in the owner’s room and VIP room and a stereo system in every cabin. The fly is equipped, in addition to the second pilot station, with a small

salon with a table, barbeque and refrigerator, and the wide aft at the stern is very useful during breaks to take in dip in the sea.

The Baleari islands, which boasts a mild climate, are perfect already in April to cast off and under take pleasurable voyages. In Formentera it is even possible to enjoy scuba diving between the pastures of Posidonia, considered the best conserved pastures of the Mediterranean. The undersea landscape stands out for its excellent visibility of up to 50 meters and for the pleasantness of the water temperature, which reaches 29°C during the summer. There are about 30 immersion points, of which a great deal belong to the natural marine reserve Es Freus-Riserva of Ses Salines which can only be accessed with authorization, which must be requested in advance at the natural environment department of the Baleari government. One of the most recommended dive spots is La Plataforma, a tank where giltheads were once bred, which now lies on the ocean floor between 11 and 32 meters. Another spot that shouldn’t be missed is Punta Pedrera with its sunken boat.

Busnelli F.t.b. is the new and modern reinterpretation of Vincenzo De Cotiis, a bookcase previously designed by Jacopo Gardella for Busnelli in years ’80. Horizontal and vertical lines follow each other in an apparently disordered pattern, creating a graphic image of great effect and elegance, matter that decomposes and enriches the bookcase by the use of diverse materials such as light and dark wood, with a wax finish, iron and oxidized brass. A bookcase that can be fixed to wall or freestanding. Structure: sides, shelves and middle sides partially made of recycled wood panels, handmade, or in light and dark iroko wood treated with wax finish and partly paneled by sheet of brass oxidized with acid treatment. The shelves are made of metal sheet, coated by a sheet of finished brass oxidized with acid treatment, with the proper spaces to connect the sides. The metal supports have the same finish oxidized. www.busnelli.it 140
