Bellwether report The Bellwether Reports were developed to compress the time frame in which new boat sales information is made available. Each month the database updates new boat sales reports from the nation’s leading markets such as Florida, Texas, California, Michigan, New York, New Jersey and several others. Historically, this sampling
closely correlates with the rest of the market and provides an excellent indication of how U.S. boating sales will perform nationally. This is important because it enables everybody to adapt their strategies in a more timely fashion rather than waiting several months for state registration agencies to record and disseminate their data. Emanuele Marocchi, General Manager of Est (Europea Servizi Terminalistici) said: “We are here together with the representatives of Asia and Africa to look for efficient, economical and environmentally friendly solutions, so that Sicily can finally have a primary role in the Mediterranean area”.

Plastic and Oceans The idea of Boyan Slat, an aerospace engineering student in the Netherlands as young as 19-years old, could change the future of marine pollution caused by plastic. Ocean Cleanup Array is the name of this ambitious project, is a system which would allow the removal of debris from the five ocean trash vortexes, taking advantage of the circular currents and making use of a fleet of platforms, equipped with enormous floating booms which force the accumulation of plastic in their direction. At this point, they would be separated by plankton, filtered and gathered into a recycling container. Using beams instead of the nets usually used to clean water would also protect marine life from being captured, as the movement of the forks, guided by the currents, would be slow enough to allow the organisms enough time to flee. The platforms could be powered by sun, current and wave energy. A key feature of the system lies in the fact that the platforms do not interfere with the passage of ships, for example arranging them parallel to the route.

Sea Lions in the USA 2013 in the United States is, unfortunately, a record year for sea lion strandings. The scientists of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) still do not know the reason why almost 1,300 sick specimens ending up stranded on the coast of Southern California since the beginning of the year. They are for the most part baby sea lions born last summer and found in a dire state of malnutrition: some specimens weigh less than 9 kilograms, whereas they should way over 22. This is an unprecedented fact that reminded researchers of the peak seen in California in 1998, from the warming of waters caused by El Niño.

The slaughter of cetaceans, which has since the beginning of the year affected the striped dolphin population (stenella coeruleoalba) along the coast of the Tyrrhenian, is experiencing a steady decline. The phenomenon is probably caused by the morbillivirus, spotted in 30-40% of examined dolphins, which would have than paved the way for infection and other illnesses. The Environment Minister makes note of this, citing the relationship elabo-
rated by the bank strandings data: “The mortality rate appears to have experienced a sudden drop, and if this trend continues, it could disappear shortly.” Scientific research by the National Marine Mammal Stranding Network, formed by the cooperation between the environment and health ministers, is about to come to an end. Further diagnostic surveys are currently being carried out, including genetic ones: sensitive subjects between 15-20 years of age were tested.

Good News in the Tyrrhenian
The Marine Mammals Protection Act (a law enacted in the United States with the aim of protecting whales, dolphins, seals and other marine mammals) has realized important results, as shown by a recent report. According to this publication, the law, which was enacted in 1972 by Nixon, has prevented extinctions which had seemed by that point unavoidable, prohibiting the hunting, capturing and “molesting” of marine mammals. Examining the data of the populations of over 200 specimens, the scientists discovered that while for some species the road towards recovery is still long, others have experienced a new growth. “We saw notable recoveries of some populations, such as the gray seals of New England and lions and marine elephants along the Pacific Coast,” said Andrew Read, professor of biology at Duke University of Durham.

The Chinese boat market The boat show in Shanghai provided ICE-Agency an opportunity to take an in-depth look at how to best promote its nautical industry abroad. Generally, interest in pleasure boats is experiencing a strong upswing, aided by local government’s commitment to creating much of the necessary
infrastructure by Laura Biazzi Although the effects of the international economic crisis have been felt here, too, the Chinese shipbuilding industry continues to grow.
The show in Shanghai was the most successful event in Asia, with over 40,000 visitors in four days, a 30% increase in exhibitors over last years. The Italian pleasure boating industry was present with 13 UCINA associates inside the Italian Pavilion.

The demand for recreational craft continues to rise, as evidenced by import and export data. The internal market, in turn, is experiencing an increase in production with many domestic boat builders exhibiting new models at boat shows around the country. China is currently one of the three countries in the world with the greatest number of shipyards devoting much of their production to manufacturing pleasure boats. Many of these shipbuilding companies are foreign-owned (including the ones in Hong Kong and Taiwan) or belong to the state. The small to medium sized yards specialize in turning out a large number of boats (from small fishing boats to day cruisers). Chinese production is basically competitive only for boats less than 24 meters in length,

since building larger craft requires a higher level of competence than most Chinese shipyards are capable of yet. Most of the production facilities are concentrated in the eastern regions, Shandong and Guangdong, specifically in the cities of Qingdao, Yantai and Weihai (Shandong) and Zhuhai and Shenzhen (Guangdong). According to international standards, the quality of yachts produced in China is still considered low, but local companies are very rapidly acquiring cutting-edge technologies enabling them to compete with countries all over the world at every level, even in design. The hardware and accessories industry, however, already has an excellent market share, especially thanks to lower production costs compared to other countries. China is not only manufacturing small, on-board hardware, but also engines (although 80% of these are still imported), electronics,

Already in its 44th edition, the race is open to all IRC rated vessels measuring over 9.14 meters, divided into the following categories: Group 0 (Ima, Maxi , Swan Maxi Class, Wally, Mini Maxi), Group A (Classes 0,1,2), Group B (Classes 3 and 4). The grounds chosen for the regatta were located in the Gulf of Tigullio, off the coast of Santa Margherita, with various courses with fixed vertices between 6 and 31 miles long, selected by the Race Committee according to the weather conditions of the day. Awarded to the yacht with the best overall score in the most numerous group, this year’s Cup, winner was Giochelotta di Francesco Conte (Group B). This edition also saw the return of the Extreme 40 competition, since it was so successful in 2012. Extreme 40s are extremely fast catamarans that can plane in winds of only 7 knots. This is the second time that Luna Rossa has triumphed in the Neapolitan city and the five crew members
who sailed the Swordfish to victory were hailed like stars by spectators with even greater enthusiasm than last year. The circuit of regattas known as the “world series” saw AC45 multihull yachts compete in a variety of locations around the world, getting the teams ready for the Louis Vuitton Cup, the Defender Series (if necessary) and for the finals of the America’s Cup. Each portion of the ACWS is made up of both fleet and match races, putting the

The AC45 was designed by the ORACLE RACING design and engineering team, which developed the catamaran on behalf of the America’s Cup community. With a wingsail over 20 meters high, she handles extremely well through a wide wind range, from 5 to 30 knots. While capable of closing speeds of up to 30 knots, the AC45 was designed to remain nimble enough to handle the tight race courses planned by America’s Cup Race Management (ACRM). The challenge was to design a boat that would not only meet the racing criteria, but could also fit inside a 40-foot container, which is the shipping vessel for the America’s Cup World Series.

skills of the crews to the test. Although points accumulated in these trials do not count toward successive phases of the race, winning an America’s Cup World Series trophy is an unquestionably prestigious achievement. The days were full of excitement: the weather that week in Naples was extremely variable and sometimes quite challenging. At the helm of Luna Rossa Swordfish was Francesco Bruni, who led his crew to victory in the final regatta of the fleet races, a challenge that saw the lead change hands at least three times, until finally the Palermo-born helmsman brought his crew from their trailing position to victory. This Luna Rossa Swordfish win was pay-back for the defeat suffered against Oracle Team, led by American

«I would like to thank the whole team for its effort and dedication during these races, until the last leg of the racing and both on board and ashore: . they never give up
Slingsby, in the match race finale. “This win was the only way to forget our mistake in the match racing,” said Bruni, “The fleet race win really means a lot to me. We had an opportunity for the double win, but just missed out. I can’t thank my crew enough, Paul Campbell-James, Max Sirena, Xabi Fernandez and Manuel Modena. They did a great job today.” Slingsby delivered on his stated goal: to secure the overall 2012-2013 America’s Cup World Series season championship for ORACLE TEAM USA, all the more satisfying as that championship was paired with winning match racing title as well. Ending in second place in the overall classification of the 20122013 circuit was the Luna Rossa Piranha. Under the leadership of Chris Draper, the crew triumphed in the Neapolitan waters last year, winning fourth position in the fleet race there this year. “Based on the results the day before, we had been hoping to do better,” said helmsman Draper, “but we are very pleased in any case to have mounted the podium of the America’s Cup World Series 2012-2013, since the competition was particularly tough.” Patrizio Bertelli, Team Principal of the Luna Rossa Challenge 2013, had this to say, “I am very pleased with the progress the team made during the training period in New Zealand and, besides the results, I really appreciated Francesco Bruni’s start in the final match race.” On the dais, in front of the largest crowd ever gathered for a regatta award ceremony, Team Luna Rossa Swordfish thanked all the participants and the crowd went wild when skipper Max Sirena took the medal from around his neck and flung it into their midst. One glance towards helmsman Checco Bruni and he follows suit, flinging his medal, too, towards the outstretched arms of the public, followed by the other crew members, one by one: Xabi Fernandez, Manuel Modena and Paul Campbell James.
Curiosity:Italian derby for the semifinal The semi-finals for the match race witnessed a rather strange combination: a totally “in-house” challenge between the Luna Rossa Swordfish and the Luna Rossa Piranha. Both vessels were penalized for OCS, with Luna Rossa Swordfish on leeward. When accelerating again Luna Rossa Swordfish is in the better position, inside the mark and rounding both the reach and the leeward gate in front. On the windward leg, at the first cross, Draper closes the distance on Bruni but, being on port, is forced to give way. Bruni then chooses to sail on the left of the course where he finds more pressure, thus increasing his lead on Piranha. Swordfish will maintain her position up to the finish and qualify for the next day’s match race finals.

The challenge of this project is to look for additional solutions that will allow a more complete use of the onboard spaces, making it possibile for the yacht to be equipped with a range of facilities that are usually more common in lager yachts. For instance a touch and go helicopter pad has been added as well as the use of tenders that are slightly bigger than usual thanks to the solution for their storage. Infact storing them on either side of the main deck, frees up the aft part of the boat that could become easily a beach , a sauna area or a garage for additional water toys. The yacht is also suitable for exploration in cold as well hot climates: this explains why in one of the Explorer 57m layout proposal, all the spaces has been made accessible without the need, for guest, to go through the external area. (eg. the aft area could be accessed through a corridor that goes through the engine room space). The layout offers the guest four double cabins, plus a Vip one, while a full deck is entirely dedicated to the owner, with a huge cabin looking forward through big windows and with a huge terrace overlooking the bow area. At aft the upper deck has a spa pool. It is equipped by twin Mtu 12 V 4000 M 63 coupled to conventional shaft lines, which allow a top speed of 16 knots and cruising speed of 15. The range is 3000 nautical miles at 15 knots or 5500 miles at 13 knots. Maneuvering will be implemented by a bow thurster. The project also considers the possibility to equip the vessel with hybrid propulsion system.

Aquilia Novetrezero
This is the first project of a new brand which has a team with around twenty years of experience. It is 9 meters long, including one cabin and it will be able to be equipped with different engine solutions, according to the owner’s speed requirements Italian Class Yacht was formed on the shore of Lake Iseo out of the desire of people united by the same passion for navigation with the aim to realize completely custom-built vessels of various
dimensions (up to 70’). The shipyard can carry out innovative fitting and fixtures inspired by modern and functional designs, or accurately restore the originals which are fitted in every kind of hull. When it can’t carry out a restoration, the yard proceeds with a custom reconstruction of every single element, respecting style and period construction techniques.
In addition to traditional restoration Italia Class Yacht can make structural, electronic, hydraulic or oil dynamic adjustments in order to conform the vessel to current security and comfort standards, or simply to respond to the personal needs of clients. The first unit, the nine-meter long Aquilia Novetrezero with a small cabin with WC and
various Volvo engine solutions, is currently under construction. This boat is the result of a handcrafted and customized construction. The features which stand out are

Ice 62 A fast cruiser project by Felci Yacht Design to obtain high performances, which has two layout proposals and several keel configurations
The hull and the deck are laminated in a female mould and both are achieved using hybrid carbon –E glass fibre, using infusion techniques. The structures in carbon fibre are vacuum bag laminated to keep the weight very low , giving the yacht an extremely high longitudinal and torsional stiffness.
For the interiors the owner can choose one of two layouts, different finishes and an infinite number of details, as well as the keel configurations. In particular one can opt for a lifting keel that can alter the draught from almost 4 meters to 2.3 meters, or for a standard-version keel that, according to the customer’s requirements, can vary
from 2.9 meters to 3.4 meters. The high-strength Weldox built fin keel and the lead bulb have the advantage of reducing the percentage of ballast weight as well as the overall weight of the yacht. The aim is to obtain great power when necessary with minimum displacement for very fast surfing downwind and fast transfer by engine.
The shipyard also offers the choice of installing a double blade rudder configuration, typical of oceanic racers. There is a relaxation area aft of the steering system, equipped with direct access to the sea by an opening transom that can be used as a small beach or as a garage entrance; which, on the double bladed rudder version, can hold a 3 metre tender. The cockpit is fitted out with benches, backrests and a dining table.

Atlantis Verve Outboard Equipped with Mercury Verado outboard engines, for a top speed of 43 knots, the Verve is available in two versions: the T –top one and the Open one ( without cover). It is an agile “plug & cruise” walkaround with comfortable and functional living spaces and it can be used for day cruising as well as longer cruises Last February the Verve was first shown to the American market and now, with three outboard engines ( Mercury Verado 300 hp), is available all over the world. The project challenge was to keep all the Verve range’s
characteristics as far as interior areas and liveability are concerned, but improving power and performances. Atlantis Verve is a “plug & cruise” walkaround with spacious inside and outside living areas. The owner can choose between the “real” open

Gaia
Motor yacht built in Germany in 1958 and at first used by the German Navy, this charming 25 meters boat has been restored by Alessio Liuni who, together with the owner, has decided to keep the external lines and set a more modern interior design The most interesting aspect of this work, according to Liuni, was precisely the dichotomy meant to be established between the (classic) outward appearance of the boat and the interiors redesigned in a modern way, with a great freedom of interpretation. Gaia has a history of great charm and interest: it was a displacement shuttle built in the late '50s in the German shipyards Schurenstedt and used by the German Navy. Later it was converted into a yacht, at first by changing the layout of the interiors, but
without altering the external lines and, then, in the ‘90s there was a renovation on the superstructure with the addition of volume in the stern and a fly. An owner, attracted by Gaia’s classic lines, has decided to bring it back to life by investing in a long project, assigned to Alessio Liuni, an expert in the restoration of vintage boats. At the moment of its purchasing, the shuttle had no equipment, apart from the engines. Structured on three decks, Gaia is organized with an aft dining area which, by a circu-

From the aft saloon continuing towards the bow on the left there is the kitchen and then the dashboard in an elevated position. There’s also the main lounge, with a second circular staircase leading to the lower deck, reserved for the owner’s cabin (full beam) and the VIP one. The flybridge has a bimini and a large sunbathing area, plus a second command post and a tender of 5 meters. On the deck, towards the bow, there is
also a drift sailing over 4 meters. Always towards the bow there is a hatch leading to the crew area (with two cabins). The interiors have been furnished with maple wood and pearly lacquers with cham-
pagne color (walls and furniture), while for the floors the main deck features a wengé wood in strong contrast with that of the walls and the lower deck with biscuit-colored carpet. The ceilings are in Alcantara.

I followed the construction of this yacht through the years, from its bare hull
through the successive phases of installation of the various systems and furnishings. I saw how the road to its completion, fraught with the vicissitudes of the Ferretti Group, was in any case undertaken with a constant attitude of loving care by a dedicated and competent team who managed to bring a particularly complex project to completion in an exemplary manner. Just a few days after she was launched from the CRN boat yard in Ancona, I got back on board to inspect the finished boat, dressed up, as she was, to celebrate and be delivered to her new owner. The effect was even greater than what our readers can fathom from the marvellous photographs by Maurizio Paradisi that accompany this article. The atmosphere on
board was soft and warm and permeated by a unique elegance. The color scheme was muted, serious, and yet the quality and choice of materials, the exquisite craftwork of the furniture and the ornamental touches made sure that pleasantly luxurious interiors were also cozy and highly livable. But let’s go back a step. The project was initiated by Norberto Ferretti, whose idea was to construct a yacht for himself that would live up to his notion of what a truly great yacht should be: one which would be the bearer of innovation, both in terms of style and technology. The project’s design was given to Studio Zuccon, Ferretti Group’s historic partner, with the mission to bring Norberto Ferretti’s concept to life. Along the way, a buyer came along who, in purchasing the boat, accepted the general plans for the project.

J’Ade Crn 60m
Gianni Zuccon and his team bravely distanced themselves from the usual distinguishing features of their design studio (that make CRN yachts immediately recognizable). Once again proving their great versatility and creativity, they have delivered a yacht whose exterior design represents a significant deviation and evolution from elements that have always been seen as essential to the architectural style of large vessels. J’Ade’s hull/superstructure ratio takes on a particular connotation since there is no clear boundary between the two, as opposed to traditional models. The two parts blend together thanks to a trapezoidshaped element that rises from the hull to include the gunwale of the main bridge, and five full-length windows on the upper deck. It is a stylistic element that takes on a symbolic, unifying significance: the boat is all of a piece, large, solid, with perfectly aligned interiors and exteriors.
The color scheme is extremely effective in highlighting the layout of the rooms and the attention to decorative detail: the “warm grey” by Du Pont which covers the hull, the main deck and part of the upper deck is more of a warm, tawny taupe than grey. The upper deck opens forward onto a white wheelhouse area, and at the stern on both the upper deck and sundeck there are wide patios.
Interiors and furniture Interior layout is traditional, with large lounge areas, both indoors and out. Roomy guest cabins, including the master cabin, sleep ten, all pampered by thirteen crew members. The furniture, designed in accordance to the wishes of the ship’s mistress, and developed by Zuccon International Project and CRN’s interior team under the guidance of architect Costanza Pazzi, is dominated a brown/cream

As you can see, the decor is based on the combination of brown (walls and furniture, armchairs and panels, parquet) and creamy white (Baxter sofas of the main hall and one on the upper deck and nubuck Frau chairs of the bar area, as well as the central floor/carpet again in the main hall), and jade details. 74

Brown are the walls and the furniture in Canaletto walnut with some polished rosewood details. Brown are also the big nabuk leather armchairs in the salon, the nabuk-covered panels on the cupboard doors and drawers, the Afromosia, wide-board hardwood floors and the Emperador Dark marble cladding in all the bathrooms. Cream is the upholstery of the great Baxter sofas in the main salon, as well as those of the upper deck salon and the nabuk leather, custom-printed upholstery of the Frau chairs in the bar area of the main salon. Its travertine marble central floor/carpeting reflects the same creamy white. This same bi-color scheme is found in the master’s cabin, located foremost on the main deck, enhanced by a bedspread and other fabrics by Loro Piana.

The master’s suite is accessed through the lobby from which staircases and an elevator lead to the other three decks. The passage from the studio leads to the cabin which, besides being the “sleeping quarters,” is in fact a perfect refuge adorned with every comfort including a conversation area on the left and a cozy recessed balcony on the right. There is a full-beam bathroom, with a shower stall and toilet area separate from the large, central, Corian bathtub. Following established traditions, the galley is located portside and features a pantry. The J’Ade’s dining room, however, is not on the main deck, but on the upper deck and the food is brought up by means of a dumbwaiter or by service stairs. The upper deck salon has a very comfortable TV/conversation area as well as a formal dining room. The two areas share the vast and bright room that looks out through five full-length windows on each side, a privileged position whether anchored at bay or out on the open the open seas.
Indoor/outdoor ratio The entire design of the spaces on-board was conceived to maximize the view of the sea and enhance the feeling of being directly connected to it. Interiors and outdoor areas complement one another. While rooms inside are bright with natural light pouring in from vast windows on each level, including the lower deck, outdoor areas have been designed with the same refined care in furnishings as the interiors. Comfortable conversation areas and alfresco dining areas can be found on each deck and the sun deck sports a profusion of couches, armchairs and sun beds. The sundeck stern can also be used as a touch-and-go helipad. The central part of the sundeck holds a fitness and wellness area with a hammam and steam bath tiled in bright green. At the prow there is a big Jacuzzi to cool off in from sunbathing even while sailing.

BARCHE June 2013
At anchor, the preferred position for enjoying the sea is without a doubt the wide beach club formed by opening the stern hatch. Once opened, with its teak floor and paneling, it becomes a pleasant, water’s edge lounge accessible both via the cockpit and through the inside salon. This area includes one of the most distinctive features of the entire project: the floodable tender garage, very impressive with the dramatic effect of its underwater lights that make you feel like you are in a sophisticated action movie. The garage basin is practically beam-width and houses, at the owner’s request, a magnificent 27-foot (almost 8.5 meters) Riva Iseo. As engineer Simone Lorenzano, project manager of the J’Ade, explained, creating this system required substantial modification of the “standard” naval platform used by CRN for its 60-meter models. The wide, lateral, planked, portside opening required structural modifications, making it necessary to carry out specific studies on the feasibility of creating a longitudinal and traversal floodable compartment. The total displacement of the yacht, about 823 tons, means that the imbalance produced by the 18 tons of water necessary to fill the tender basin is negligible. The space fills up in about 1015 minutes by opening a valve that substantially takes advantage of the difference in water level between the sea and the yacht’s interior.

Gianni Zuccon’s opinion J’Ade is a yacht that departs from CRN tradition. Her lines are very innovative. How and why? Let’s start with the why. In a process of continuous creative research regarding style and design, we wanted to explore new ideas as to form, disrupting the normal relationship between the hull and superstructure. On the J’Ade we have created an unprecedented integration between the hull and superstructure, merging what are usually distinct parts into a single unit. How did we manage to create such a solution? The continuity of the external surfaces of the hull and superstructure is the key to understanding the architectural language we adopted.
The two-color scheme was chosen to enhance the proportional relationship between the volumes. The trapezoid that serves as a stylistic link between the hull and superstructure includes another strong and distinctive element: the series of large windows of the upper deck lounge. This yacht has a complex design, harmoniously complex... While the general composition is characterized by its originality, the J’Ade’s design manages to remain consistent despite the variety of elements that comprise it. Yes, a great deal of attention to exterior design details went into developing this project, the same kind of care that is usually given to build-
ing smaller craft. The same is true for the interiors. The placement of each design detail is the result of careful planning and contributes to the overall composition of a product with a lot of personality. It is clear that a lot of though went into the planning of each and every detail of the J’Ade confirming ach collaborator’s commitment to the pursuit of excellence at every level to guarantee reliability and their belief that ideas can be transformed into reality. This mega yacht is the result of a careful and in part “courageous” process of experimentation with typologies and languages that will allow the boat yard to supplement its fleet with a product that will be in effect considered a novelty in the current market.

J’Ade Crn 60m The inverse action, for safety reasons, is carried out in only three minutes. Besides the big hatch door, there are two wave-protection doors to keep the garage from being damaged. A sensor signals when the water level is sufficient to allow the tender to go out to sea. At this point the doors open and the guests, aboard a sparkling Riva Iseo, can head off over the waves to their desired destination. Chapeau at CRN and his technicians came up with a brilliant solution to a tough problem, adding a superb touch of class to an already magnificent yacht!

he Vulcan line – 46m, 35m Trideck and 35m Raised pilot house – has ushered this Turkish com-
pany, till now only known for producing wooden lobster boats, into the world of megayachts. The Vulcan 46, in particular, is the flagship for the range of Vicem's most ambitious project to date. The declaration of founder and CEO of Vicem Yacht, Sebahattin Hafizoglu, sums up the spirit of this latest challenge. “We want our reputation to be based on our ability to build beautiful, fast and lightweight vessels. Vicem is entering the superyacht sector with serious ambitions and the intention not to compromise in terms of the quality of the materials or the level of technology we use so that our product can stand up against any comparison to any other company in northern Europe.”

Vicem Vulcan 46 m To reach this goal, even though the actually construction was entirely carried out on site in Antalya, they did rely on the expert hand of an architect from that part of the Old World with centuries of experience in the sector, Dutch master Frank Mulder. He chose to favor composite materials, applied by resininfusion and sandwich techniques to optimize the weight/power ratio, creating a superstructure that, despite its imposing 46-meter length, can keep a low profile thanks to its elongated and rounded lines. The ship, clearly designed for ocean voyages, is extremely versatile: the semi-displacement hull is propelled by twin, 3.65hp MTU engines and can reach tops speeds of 25 knots, but at the same time is also able to remain highly efficient at cruising speeds for long distances, with about a 4000 nautical mile autonomy at 12 knots. The interiors for the three decks were designed by Art-Line Studio, who brought the owner's dreams to life. The color scheme, the forms and the choice of materials for the decor are very Zen: a lot of wood contrasting with white (white furniture, leather, carpeting, drapes and ceilings),

Characteristics of the Vulcan line Frank Mulder designed the entire range with the intention of creating long-range vessels. Therefore he chose high quality materials to keep hull and superstructure maintenance problems to a minimum. Composite materials, applied with resin and sandwich techniques, allow an optimum resistance/weight ratio. The integrated fuel tanks were also introduced in this line allowing greater living space as well as greater fuel capacity. Fast boats have tapered prows to allow them greater maneuverability planing through rough weaves, but they are also very efficient at lower, displacement speeds. The interior layout is optimal and décor can be completely custom designed. All hulls have obtained Rina or MCA certification.

In the deckhouse, the saloon is fitted with a relaxation area with a sofa (which can be turned into an additional bed for two people) and a television, whereas the galley is located at prow on a lower level and it is designed for a crew of six with high-end materials and finishes, such as a 165 liter refrigerator and an electric Miele oven, in addition to ample storage space. Below deck, there are two cabins, both with a separate bathroom and shower, as on the Fly 45. Particular attention has been given to making large doorways, wide spaces for closets and compartments and in maintaining the cabin height at about 190 cm. The propulsion has been entrusted to IPS technology, with a reduction of Co2 emissions, low fuel consumptions, noise levels below 50%, and good steering, especially in mooring activities.According to the shipyard, with a 300 hp four cylinders engine, supercharger and aftercooler the Fly 40 is able to reach a maximum speed of 30 knots with an average consumption of 80 liters per hour at 25/26 knots.

A nook under the wheel allows driving while standing without colliding ones legs, while the low step acts as a foot support while driving sitting down. Two lockers (one in the nook and one on the footrest) offer coin tray solutions for small objects. The driver’s seat is designed as a sofa or simple back rest. Slightly lower, on the other hand, there is an “air type” table which can be closed into the wall when it is not needed.

The Test With a deadrise of 26 degrees at the stern and an advanced profile stempost, it is immediately clear that we are about to board a fast vessel with two Verado motors at the stern, equipped with Mirage 23” pitch 3 ball propellors. The generosity of the 250 cv engines is undeniable. Out of the port a southern wind blows past at 15 knots, giving way to a choppy sea, putting to the test both the immersed part of the hull and the hull in general. We operate the SmartCraft DTS commands with Shadow Mode and leave the port. The on board weight includes about 200 liters of fuel and 5 crew members, with no water in the stern tank. We navigate against a beam sea, with the wind hitting the sides of the boat and the stern which is completely empty standing tall on the surface of the sea. The trim is neutral and in order to enter planing it is necessary to reach 2,800 knots, which corresponds to a velocity of 15.3 knots and a total consumption of 43 liters an hour. We increase the speed to about 3,500 rpm at 24.8 knots, a pace which allows us to manage the vessel perfectly even while turning. We further stimulate the motors and integrate the trim into the gear control. The motors result a bit low on the transom and this is evident by the fact that in order to “feel” the trim we must raise it to above level 6. At 4,000 rpm we navigate at about 33 knots consuming 104 lt/h, whereas at 5,000 knots the velocity is raised to about 45 knots and the consumption to 164 lt/h. The maximum velocity, however, is reached at 6,000 rpm with the gps displaying a value of 49.7 knots. At this pace and with these sea and wind conditions, driving experience is necessary to handle this boat, whose hull

Every Master boat can be customized by the client, both in terms of the deck modeling and color selection. The utilized materials are Pennel & Flipo hypalon and neoprene rubber coated fabric, a 1,690 dtex Orca, while the fiberglass is laminated by hand in the new facility with headquarters in Carini, near the Palermo Airport. The tubulars offer six watertight compartments at differentiated diameter between the prow and the stern (from 0.67 to 0.47 meters) and are united to the fiberglass with fabric strips fastened externally. The resin is isoftalic which serves to permeate wicker, mat and composites and the coremat and polyutherane are useful as a structural reinforcement. This material, used to make longerons and floor plates, is covered in resin. The teak is used both on the planking level and the stern platforms, while all the lockers are equipped with piston valves and latches. It is not towable, as even with deflated tires its rigid structure causes it to go beyond the allowed limit of traffic laws.

tested for you Master 970 Alicudi fb is quite deep, continually searching for support at the prow, and the wind makes this even more difficult. The boat responds well to the reactivity of the motors, even if the hydraulic steering gear is a bit rigid, causing a possible air bubble in the circuit, therefore making turns a bit longer than expected. The boat has fun and safe reactions while still, resting against the internal tubular which causes it to trace a precise and tight circle. We now navigate at about a 45 degree angle to the surface motion of the sea, a condition with causes the hull to feel the wind less and control is much easier, even at full speed. We also try a crash stop, passing rapidly from 5,500 rpm (46 knots) to a sudden complete stop, which does not cause water ingress. Finally, we test the time needed to enter planing. We stop the hull, reset the stopwatch and operate the throttle: after 3.2 seconds the 970 Alicudi is trimmed out of the water. Weight and length have a positive effect on the passage of the wave on the prow, whose peak comes eagerly but softly, with the progressive support of the spirketting on the water without colliding abruptly.
During our test, we reached a maximum velocity of 6,000 rpm with the GPS revealing a value of 49.7 knots. The boat had fun and secure reactions while still, resting against an internal tubolare, causing it to trace a precise and tight circle.

hinking about last generation plotters, the mind comes inevitably to the mythical song sung by Susan Sarandon "Touch
me, I want to be dirty ' in The Rocky Horror Picture Show for comparison. Today you have to be touch, otherwise you are nobody. The trend, also in the nautical world, has been in place for some time, so that we can say, with certainty, that we are facing the second generation of touchscreen plotters. Some companies missed the first and have come directly to the second one. But the concept is valid for all major manufacturers: the latest products are all touchscreen, more advanced and more sensitive. Many people argue that they can be used even with wet hands or gloves. How can it be possible? It depends on the sensitivity of the screen, and in particular, on the technique of "bonding." The assembly of the display to the apparatus and the quality of this process leads to a greater or lesser sensitivity. At the end of the process they are precisely tested and approved by various companies to check if the desired sensitivity has been obtained. They will be tested, therefore, with wet hands and by wearing gloves. For me as Genoese, there is a test that no touchscreen has passed yet: greasy fingers with focaccia oil. To tell the truth, they are
not good even on the buttons of an “old style plotter keyboard. The trend is unambiguous, although the latest models show some differences we then analyze. Somebody chooses the single touch, someone prefers the double touch or the hybrid, a touchscreen that provides for the presence of buttons or wheels to access the main menu functions. Given the general trend, a question is legitimate: is it a fashion or are they really useful on board? We do not want to express hasty judgments, nor convince anyone of a preconceived thesis, we limit ourselves to imagine a clash between supporters and detractors, so as to show all strengths and weaknesses of these tools. By convention, we will call the TOUCH supporters and NOT TOUCH detractors.

TOUCH – The screen is larger
TOUCH - The user interface is more intuitive
It is a good motivation for the touchscreen plotters. Considering the same space on the helm station, all or most of the space occupied by the plotter is intended for the screen. Not by chance, the latest models are, as they say, wide screen, similar to a 16:9 of film or television type. The screen orientation is horizontal and you no longer see chart plotters with a vertical development. The advantage is more evident for relatively small models. The little mask that contained the menu buttons is gone and the display is, therefore, larger.
Smartphones and tablets are everywhere and have entered everyday use. As a result, many electronic accessories have aligned to this trend. Until a few years ago a touchscreen seemed stuff from Matrix, now it is very common. My daughter, who is three and a half years, in front of any display tries to use her finger as if it were touch. Even with the television, if she wants to change the channel, she tries to touch the screen instead of the remote control. The mass distribution has made this interface much more "friendly". But that's not all. Have you ever tried, after a short time you handle a smartphone, to come back to an old generation mobile phone? The number of required steps to perform an operation with a push-button phone is enormously greater. The touch display allows you to skip many steps to accomplish a task. Its interface is more intuitive and fast. It almost seems to anticipate your moves, a bit like it reads your mind. Merit of those who study these things and design the software tool. Consequently, the menu is much easier and intuitive because limited passages means reducing the possibility of error.

utility on board?
It all depends on the type of boat and type of sea you face. One thing is certain, a planing hull that jumps from one wave to another is not the ideal place to work on a touchscreen. It is not by chance that this technology has spread like wildfire for mobile phones and tablets. The use of these tools is usually done while still standing, in an office or even walking, but certainly not while you jump. On board of a boat the dear old keyboard can be much more practical. This is why many new generation plotters, even if they are full touch, have some buttons or a knob. Those of Raymarine are defined as hybrids, meaning that they can be used touch or in a traditional way with the buttons. The same applies to the last models of Lowrance and even Furuno, which has a knob to access the menu.
Garmin – GPSMAP 721 They were the first and they come first also in the update. Garmin is the company, among those nautical, which has been focusing for some time on the touchscreen. The GPSMAP 721 is the second generation of these products. The latest addition is the 721, which is a 7-inch multi-function. It is a very popular size because it is a compromise measure, perfect for boats of small and medium length. Garmin has also chosen the multi-touch path and offers the pinch-to-zoom function to zoom in and zoom out the image with two fingers. The other major effort has been made for the processor. Compared to the previous generation, it is 60% more powerful. This power is translated into a faster zoom in to get more quickly panning shots on the map. Finally, as well as all the newer models, it makes wireless a real belief. Also the GPSMAP 720 connects wirelessly to other devices on board as the autopilot and radar. www.garmin.it

NON TOUCH - The touchscreen does not always respond well The sensitivity is a problem especially at sea. For a smartphone or a tablet it is just a matter of touching the screen. It is not said that this is always easy on a boat that rolls, slews or passes on the waves. It is not said that even the new generation screens, i.e. those that work with wet hands or gloves, meet the favors of boaters. At times, it is possible that sensitivity is also too much. Just pressing the buttons hard you are sure to choose an option. With a touchscreen, instead, you have to accustom and calibrate the touch.

Furuno - NavNet TZtouch
Above, the Maxi Dolphin 51. Below, the Azimut 86S. The shipyards’ trend is always to fit in more advanced touchscreens.
It is the new range of multi-function plotters that includes two models of different "tonnage": 9 and 14 inches. The main feature is to be multi-touch, that is, to offer the possibility of the pinch-to-zoom. What does this mean? It is nothing more than what you normally do with a smartphone or a tablet when you're in front of a internet page. To enlarge or reduce a picture you use two fingers. Among all the nautical plotters, those by Furuno have chosen the interface more similar to that of common use devices as phones of the latest generation. The advantage is that we will always be more accustomed to using two fingers on the display to scroll, zoom in and narrow. The disadvantage for those who belong to the NOT TOUCH party is that, while you jump over the waves, two fingers are even worse than one. To convince the skeptics, Furuno also included the RotoKey. It is a knob located on the frame side of the screen that allows you to access the main functions of the menu to zoom in or zoom out the mapping, simply by turning it. So it is definitely a touch plotter, indeed multi touch, but you can also use it in a traditional way. The RotoKey has also the advantage of taking up much less space than that required for a keyboard with many buttons. www.navnet.com www.arimargroup.com

Navico – Lowrance HDS Gen2 touch The name says it all. Gen2 Touch is the second generation of HDS plotter and the newest product by Navico who owns, as well as Lowrance, also the Simrad and B & G brands. It is a full touchscreen that provides few but significant keys to scroll through the menu and activate functions also in the traditional way. In what way has it evolved compared to its predecessors? The Lowrance designers have worked very hard on the interface. It is even more intuitive and to customize a screen it is enough to drag the icons of the various functions that appear on the home page. The processor has been improved to allow faster steps from one level to another of zoom and from a chart screen to another. Even the "machine" has enhanced. The screen has a higher sensitivity than the previous models so that they work even if your hands are wet. In addition, care has been taken to visibility. The screen is wide, which is a sort of 16:9 to gain further space, and it is "total sun view." Translated, it means that the brightness has been optimized so as to be always visible even in direct sunlight and with any viewing angle. Finally, HDS Gen2 Touch is the most compact as it incorporates in a single instrument also digital fish finder module that allows you to have the scan function structure and is equipped with built-in GPS antenna. The installation and the placement on the helm station are therefore more simple. www.lowrance.com

TOUCH - The many functions are more easily accessible Until a few years ago, the "competition" among chart plotters manufacturers was about which one of them added new functions. Today they are many. They are really multi function tools that incorporate the radar, perhaps with the chance to make the overlay, the fish finder with the option to develop a kind of three-dimensional map of the fund, the sounder can "photograph" what lies beneath the hull, the raster vector, three-dimensional cartography, satellite photos, the repeat function of motor data, if this has an electronic control unit. In other cases, they have inputs for connecting multiple cameras, some even thermal imaging cameras to see at night; they collect the information from various sensors and carry out the task of monitoring all the onboard systems. In short, a plotter is capable of doing really everything. They look like the AL computer in 2001 A Space Odyssey. The problem and the challenge the designers of these devices face, is to make all this information easily accessible. If you need a thermonuclear engineer to browse the menu, the tool is not "friendly". Even if they are used to surf, it is worth they are easy to understand. The latest generation of touchscreen plotters have made great strides in this direction. It is enough to think that to "customize" a page, once they proceeded in a complex way by pushing many buttons, now is done by simply dragging your finger on the icon of the function you want to display on the screen. If you drag multiple icons, automatically the plotter organizes itself with a "splitted" screenshot or divided the image so as to bring mapping,

can be much more practical. This is
NON TOUCH - The traditional buttons represent a sort of functions summary
why many new generation plotters, even if they are FULL TOUCH, have some buttons or a knob.
For the same reason, some people prefer the keyboard. A plotter that incorporates many functions and is touchscreen risks to be buffer. Let's try an example. We are facing a mapping screen of the plotter. You can see the sea, the coast and the port from which we have just left. You also see the symbol of the boat that indicates our position and moves on the map. At this point I want to make a waypoint and plot a course. It's easy, just squeeze the screen in the exact spot where I have to get. To succeed, however, it’s necessary a minimal familiarity with the touchscreen, otherwise I remain immobilized without understanding how to do. A traditional plotter which has at the side of the screen the buttons MARK and GO-TO, makes us understand that the ship's position is obtained with the first button and the route with the second one . Alternatively, there is always a joystick or a knob that allows us to move the cursor to the desired location to save the waypoint and then work out the route. A touchscreen can be for someone like a blank page for a writer: there are those who cannot wait to fill it and there are those who, on the contrary, remain fixed and do not even do the first step.
Raymarine – e165,a65 and a67 There's something for all tastes. In recent months, Raymarine has focused on small and large ones. E165 is a 15.4-inch multi-function plotter. The screen is a 16:9, therefore, with the footprint of a 14 inch offers a 20% larger display. The user interface is called Light House and has been further improved to be more and more easy to use. The road taken by Raymarine is defined Hybrid Touch. The plotter is touchscreen, but it does not completely abandon the push button to allow the user to select the preferred mode. As we have said, on a planing boat sailing at 30 knots in rough seas, it is hard to imagine that we can make the most common operations typical of a chart plotter. Try to plot a course or change a waypoint when you come tossed in all directions. The presence of a small mask, or a piece of frame and some buttons allow, if the sea conditions require it, to grasp the tool sideways with your right hand and use your thumb to intervene on the keys to access menus and functions . Moreover, considering the synergies with Flir, E165 is a plotter that allows you to see the screen produced by the cameras of the U.S.company. The advantages of touchscreens are particularly evident on small sizes. For this reason, Raymarine has made two small full-touch. They are a65 and a67 that have a 5.7-inch display with a footprint of only 16.4 x 14.4 cm. Obviously they

Ultimately, we do not know if you have decided to vote for the TOUCH party or the NOT TOUCH one. The main companies that produce plotters, however, are decidedly oriented towards the TOUCH coalition, but they are not all the same. The goal is common, but the way to realize it is, at least in part, different and it is worth investigating the main features of the latest models offered by Furuno, Garmin, Raymarine and Navico.

Neapolitan Success A story that begins with a shipwright in Sorrento in1849 whose efforts have bloomed into a shipyard that today exports its "legendary" fishing boats, reinterpreted in both style and materials to meet boat owners’ demands in terms of design, quality and technology by Silvia Montagna
T
he traditional fishing boat from Sorrento, with its unique characteristics so linked to its geographical origins, has now come to sail waters all over the world, thanks to the efforts of one man, Cataldo Aprea, following the footsteps of a family tradition harkening back to the mid 1800s. The Apreamare brand has set sail not only in European waters but also in those of North America, Russia, the Middle East, Japan and China, where dealers and showrooms have been established. Last April, the company showed its 64 Fly and 32 Comfort at the Boat Shows on the Chinese island of Hainan and in Sanya, the “Chinese Riviera”. But let’s go in chronological order and go back to 1849, when Giovanni Aprea began to handcraft sailboats and rowboats for fishing according to local Sorrento traditions. The family tradition continued when he passed the baton to his son Cataldo who then passed it to his son, Giovanni. By the end of the Second World War a significant innovation was added to the boats: thanks to the automobile industry, motors for the fishing boats were devised and the boatyard began to produce their first pleasure craft, a sector soon destined to overtake the company’s production of fishing vessels.

The introduction of fiberglass alongside the wood and the planing hull are some of the winning characteristics of Apreamare boats. Below, a shot of the Apreamare gathering on the French Riviera. Next page, close up of the 64 Fly.
When Cataldo Aprea entered the family business in 1973, he made some significant changes in both the company’s management and production methods. Together with Salvatore Pollio, a construction contractor, he distanced himself from the core family business and founded Apreamare in 1983. In 1987 they presented their first model, a sevenmeter fishing boat called the Smeraldo 7, at the Naples Boat Show, which was an immediate success. That same year marked a milestone for the evolution of fishing boats: fiberglass was used for making the hulls for the first time, saving precious woods like teak and mahogany for other parts. This new vessel was presented at the Genoa Boat show in 1988 where it was enthusiastically received by the public. The model which marked a major change in design and altered Apreamare’s destiny was the 1989 model, the
Smeraldo 9, whose planning hull could safely sustain very high cruising speeds. Today production is concentrated on creating contemporary-styled, re-elaborated, 8-16 meter fishing boats, designed with various options - open, with cabins, with or without flybridges - to meet the clientele’s demands for comfort, space and refinement. Besides “traditional” models, the company has also developed a concept model, the Smeraldo 45, inspired by 1950s designs, characterized by an old-fashioned prow and tight, less-rounded lines of its deckhouse. In this re-elaborated design, retro-styled, revisited details, like the mahogany lateral paneling, lower than on previous models, or the company’s standard prow sofa, fit right in. The Maestro line – comprising models 82, 56, 66, 51 – represent a truly innovative phase in the shipyard’s

> Sorrento fishing boat
These ancient boats were practically unchanged until just before the Second World War. Characterized especially by a double-pointed hull, with bow and stern practically identical, the vessel relied on oars and latin-rig sails for propulsion. The pointed bow served a specific function: after sailing to a fishing spot, the boat was then rowed sternward. The stern then became the work area and its unique shape granted the anchored boat greater stability. They were work boats, after all, but the passion and craftsmanship of the carpenters, blacksmiths and shipwrights who built them always gave them that particular grace that made them so successful. It was only in the ‘30s that the first major evolution of the Sorrento fishing boats came about: the introduction of a motor. The first to be fitted were automobile engines taken from Fiat Balillas and then from the American Jeeps. Stern volumes were increased and the vessel took on a new aspect that confirmed it as the perfect sea-going craft. Thus the traditional fishing boat began to capture the interest of pleasure boaters.

Covering 126,000 square meters, 30,000 of which indoor, the facilities offer services both on land and in the water and total assistance for their own clients as well as for anyone else who owns a boat. The area includes a private dock of about 10,000 square meters that has berths for 100 boats, with a sea-access canal and which carries out coastal protection activities. The travel-lift, capable of transporting large vessels, lets the boat be tested at sea and in towpaths. The center also serves transient clients passing through the Tyrrhenian Basin with its famous tourist ports like Capri, Ischia and Sorrento.

digits
Over a century of history for nearly 300 built boats, more than 300,000 square meters of production space and 34 yachts currently under construction, including a 90 meters. Here are some numbers of an adventure intended to grow further by Marina Mancuso
The shipyard designs, manufactures and sells three product lines: Class (composite boats from 93 to 145 feet) Custom (steel and aluminum over 47 meters) and Grande by Benetti (planing yachts from 100 to 140 feet).
A full calendar of events, culminating with a weekend in Portofino in June. This is how one of the oldest shipyards in the world - founded in 1873 by Lorenzo Benetti - will celebrate its 140th anniversary, which also coincides with the 10th anniversary of the acquisition of the shipyard in Livorno by Orlando family. To celebrate this double anniversary, the company has decided to open its legendary historical archive for the first time (you can
see some pictures in these pages), recently computerized. The activities of the yard, at the beginning of the ‘70s of the XIX century, is based on the building of wooden boats for local and international trade. After the death of the founder Lorenzo, the sons Gino and Emilio took over, changing the name to "Fratelli Benetti" and reaching great attention and recognition even outside the Mediterranean area. After the Second World War, with the disappearance of commercial wooden sailing ships, the
History pills Here are some of the main years of this long and fascinating journey through the boats. 1873: Lorenzo Benetti (1844-1914) bought the Cantiere Darsena Lucca, he founded Benetti and launched more than 30 ships.
1910 He got a public concession in Darsena Italia where there is the second plant.

1914 Gino and Emilio renamed the yard "Fratelli Benetti" and continued their father's business.
1927 Gino died and the sons Giuseppe and Virgilio succeeded their father, while Emilio was joined by his sons Maurizio and Bertani. In the first ‘60s over 100 sailing ships were launched.
1941 Maria was built, the first diesel boat with a steel hull.
1954 The site was then divided into two units: "Cantiere Fratelli Benetti" (sailing and motor boats), and "Cantiere M & B Benetti " (commercial vessels).

Benetti’s 140 years company committed itself to steel boats intended for leisure and in the early '60s it also produced luxury mega yachts. Since 1980, the fleet included large motor yachts from 30 to 60 meters, among which the Nabila of 86 meters stood out, until in 1985 the site was acquired by Azimut, forever changing some of its original features. The site, in fact, is now part of the Azimut-Benetti Group and has three production centers (Viareggio, Fano and Livorno) and representative offices located in Fort Lauderdale (USA), Dubai and Hong Kong and, for the 13th consecutive year, was crowned as the first manufacturer in the world of mega-yachts over 24 meters ("Global Order Book 2012-13", ShowBoats ranking).

2009: new boatshed in Darsena Lucca and the birth of Benetti Class Range. 2010: new aluminum semi-displacement line, from 47 to 55 meters. 2012: order of the first yacht over 90 meters.
"We are planning a very busy calendar of events that will culminate in June in the magnificent surroundings of Portofino with an exclusive weekend dedicated to our customers coming from all over the world. They are owners who have not come to us to buy a yacht, but with whom we build it to better express their personality and experience a genuine relationship with the sea. This island, of about 59 square kilometres - and second in size only to that of Sant'Antioco - is located in the northwestern part of Sardinia, in the gulf, which carries its name. It was formed from schistose rocks with granite base, and so, it is very arid. It was once called Insula Herculis, and then Sinuaria, from which derives the current one. Thanks to the long uninhabited period the beaches are still unpolluted, in the green of the Mediterranean area and white donkeys can be seen. The Cala d’Arena beach is maybe the most beautiful on the whole island. During the winter it is divided in two by a small stream: behind it stands a coastal tower of the XVI century. Near the ruins of a monastery of Camaldoli friars and surrounded by granite rocks, there is Cala Sant'Andrea, while to the north-east, near the only inhabited center of the island (landing dock for boats), there is Cala d'Oliva. In the eastern part, toward the gulf of the Asinara, the Cala di Sombro di Dentro offers beautiful coves protected from the wind, as Cala Serena, while on the opposite side, exposed to the winds, there is Cala di Sgombro di Fuori. Near a covered port we can find Cala Reale, where we can admire the remains of an ancient roman ship.
