But let’s get back to our desire to go sailing. At a conference in China, the president idea of the sea, the sun, the salt water ready to be plunged into of their shipbuilding association asked me to teach him the alone or with friends. It is an idea that does me good to think “boat game.” I told him that the most important thing in the about. Just thinking about untying the moorings and wandergame was freedom: the freedom to leave whenever you want, ing off in my little boat lifts my spirits. A few more days to stress to go wherever you want, to go with whomever you want, to out like the Lehman Brothers and then, finally, we’re off! Finally travel alone or in company of plenty of others. Let’s take back it’s August and we can escape in my little wooden craft up and the freedom to be once again yachters in love with the sea and down the coastline of the Italian peninsula. We’ve been holding sailing. Last year fear kept us tied to our desks in our offices and our breath for six years now already. They went by in a flash, as advised us to go stay in some cheap little guest house, perhaps if the world was suspended, waiting for who knows what. under a false name, since you never know. The sea has long, protective arms, always ready to ed into another world, so we can quit holding our breath and embrace you. The sea is a brother who gives of himself without start to live again. Let’s take our boats out of the harbor and receiving anything in return.” enjoy the most beautiful sea on the planet. The beach crowned "Queen" of the summer 2013 by the five sails of Legambiente and Touring Club is Posada (in the province of Nuoro), one of the most beautiful towns of the Eastern coast of Sardinia. The district is on the front line in the protection and enhancement of the environment, as shown by the large project for the preservation of the coastal system, which allowed the re-naturalization of the dunes on eight kilometers and it also promoted the reconstruction of the bridge leading to Su Tiriarzu beach. Two new entrances to the beaches were created consisting in small wooden bridges and boardwalks. Among the various virtuous initiatives, the conservationsupervision of the Orvile pine forest and the parkings at sea with the ticket goes on, which entitles the users to a free guided tour in the old town centre of Posada (the proceeds are used for enhancement interventions for the usability of the beaches and the sea rescue service).

The Giant Oarfish or king of herrings (Regalecus Glesne) is an abyssal, large and very rare fish. It lives at about 1,000 meters deep. Scientists at the University of Louisiana (USA) announced they had captured on film the first images of good quality of the mysterious fish in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The photos date back to two years ago, but the results have been published only now.

Lega Coop - Lega Pesca Liguria, decided to ask to the Region of Liguria the state of natural disaster. The fishermen of this area, in fact, because of the "raids" of tuna, often find holes in the nets and the fishes that have taken over the sea or been swallowed up by large pelagic fishes. The tuna fishes that live in the Ligurian Sea, of major proportions (they can weigh up to 150 pounds), are very greedy of anchovies: for this reason

Alga pestiferous A new Australian invasive alga, Caulerpa disticophylla, was discovered off the coast of southern Sicily. The investigations have shown that the seaweed is different from the Caulerpa taxifoli,

already present in other Mediterranean areas, probably arrived via the bilge water of ships, as also indicated by its counterpart in an area of Turkey where there is a heavy traffic of oil tankers.

It is the monk seal which came back to live for a few months in the waters of the protected marine area of the Egadi (see Environment Sea in Barche’s issue of July). This was decided by the jury of the ideas contest - chaired by Donatella Bianchi, host of "Linea Blu, Vivere il mare" - choosing from more than 126 proposals coming from students of primary and secondary schools of the Egadi islands. "The name Morgana – explained the director of the protected marine area, Stefano Donati evokes the phenomenon of marine mirage known as" Fata Morgana ", very appropriate for a rare and mysterious animal, that appears and disappears at dawn and dusk ". 26

when they see a net full of these fishes they rush against them and break through the network for eating them. Not even fishing at night with the lamps is safe: tuna stay under the lights and eat the fishes that were supposed to end up in fishermen's nets. The struggle between man and tuna, with traps and pitfalls of Fad (Fishing aggregating devices) that always marks the victory of man over animal, in the Ligurian Sea seems to have turned the story.

It is the name of a Finnish project financed by the EU with € 4.75 million carried out by an international team that chose the Arctic as a laboratory for research on the effects of pollution and climate change on the environment and health. According to the researchers, in fact, people who live in the arctic areas can be more sensitive to pollutants because of their genetics and they make up a more effective sample to study the health effects of extreme weather events, which are already taking place, such as '' global'' smog. The task force of Arc-Risk is analyzing the links between environmental contaminants, climate and health to identify which processes intervene on chemical cycles in nature and modify them also entering in the food chain, by damaging population and wildlife. The new contaminants such as brominated and fluorinated compounds and bisphenol A, which act on hormones, and agents not tested yet that they would have carcinogenic effects, are under investigation.

t takes extraordinary people, with an iron will, great experience, attention to detail and unconditional dedication. It is a game in which,

no matter how hard you try, no matter how motivated you are, no matter how much you are willing to spend, victory is never certain.” These words of Sir Peter Blake (a real America’s Cup legend, who passed away in 2011) are in the preface to the book Luna Rossa, about the 30th edition of the America’s Cup (2000). And they are words that well describe the dedication that drives the yachtsmen who strive to claim the America’s Cup, that coveted, prestigious prize that symbolizes a conquest made both on behalf of and in a struggle against the seas. The sport, passion, respect and sacrifice that are this race’s life blood are perhaps the very reasons why it inspires such enthusiasm the world over.

America’s Cup

Luna Rossa Challenge has arrived in San Francisco with a single boat, but without doubt it will be the most tested in view of the Louis Vuitton Cup.

Though it is officially known as the 34th America’s Cup, in reality, it covers a number of events: the America’s Cup Finals, the Louis Vuitton Cup, the America’s Cup Challenger Series, the America’s Cup World Series and the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. The semi-finals, scheduled for September 7 through 21, 2013 in San Francisco, culminate with the grand finale, known as “The Match,” in which the Defender will challenge the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup. The first edition took place in 1851 but, despite its age, the America’s Cup has always involved cutting-edge advances in each aspect of the race, from the design and construction of the boats to the more strictly technological features. The research carried out in terms of aerodynamics, hydrodynamics and carbon fiber development have proved invaluable to many other sectors, including airplane and automobile manufacturing. With the current edition, the

America’s Cup continues this tradition with even greater emphasis, presenting a new class of boat, a 22-meter catamaran.

AC 72 This 72-foot boat is propelled by an impressively tall (131 feet or 40 m) wing. It can exceed speeds of 45 knots (82 km/h) and its speed potential is four times higher than the 80-foot (24 m) boats used up until 2007. This is an unprecedented physical challenge for the 11-member crew, who will need to weigh out the energy they expend in order to make it to the finish line. The catamaran flies over the water thanks to foils displaying an extraordinarily efficient combination of aero- and hydro-dynamics. The AC72s have been designed to meet the maximum and minimum limits specified in the “box rules” that define fundamental requirements in length, width and sail area. These strict limits have been set to assure that competing boats are as similar as possible so that it is the skill of the crew, rather than the performance of any individual boat, which determines victory. In May, in the wake of the tragic accident which cost the life of a member of the Artemis Racing team (Andrew Simpson), the AC72 and their wings underwent structural revision, became subjected to limitations of winds between 10 and 23 knots, and personal safety features were improved. Thirty-seven new safety recommendations have been introduced during the 2013 America’s Cup Summer of Racing.

The four teams Some of the world’s best yachtsmen are signed on to crews

How did the most famous race in the world get started? After its first addition in England, the Cup has never missed a beat. The story begins in the Victorian era when the schooner, America, equipped by a consortium led by a group of New York businessmen, crossed the Atlantic Ocean to represent the United States at the first World’s Fair, being held in England. Before the fair, the schooner won a regatta around the Isle of Wight, claiming a trophy called the £ 100 Cup (successively erroneously called the Hundred Guinea Cup). A few years later, the last surviving union member, George Schuyler, donated the trophy, renamed the America’s Cup in honor of the winning boat, to the New York Yacht Club, with the recommendation that it become an on-going prize to be awarded following a friendly competition between nations to be contended aboard two boats after a series of regattas. After claiming the trophy in 1851, the US continued to be crowned in what was to become the longest series of wins in the sport’s history: a trail of success 132 years long, covering twenty-eight editions, spanning from 1870 to 1983, when Australia II finally snatched the America’s Cup from the Americans.

participating in the America’s Cup, including previous Cup winners, Olympic medalists and world-record holders from all different classes. For each participant, athletic preparation is fundamental. To win the America’s Cup you first need to win in an unprecedented number of primary races – nine – on one of the most challenging waters for racing in the history of sailing: San Francisco Bay.

The teams: • Artemis Racing (Royal Swedish Yacht Club, Stockolm, Sweden). Supported by the Swedish businessman, Torbjorn Tornqvist, Paul Cayard has put together a very expert team , led by the British Olympic champion, Iain Percy. The latter, born in 1976 in Southampton, has already sailed with +39 Challenge (2007), and won two Olympic gold medals (2000, 2008) and a silver (2012) in four Olympic Games, as well as reigning champion Star class (2002, 2010) and the world match race (2010). Thanks to the expert Loïck Peyron and to the young talent of Nathan Outteridge, as helmsmen, the team can count on a balanced relationship through experience and unscrupulousness. • Emirates Team New Zealand (Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Auckland, New Zealand). For over 20 years this team has represented the main force of the America's Cup, with a Cup won in 1995 and another defended in 2000. The skipper is Dean Barker, born in 1973, who is in his fourth edition of this race. He sailed with Team New Zealand also in 2000, 2003 and 2007 and he was the helmsman in the deciding race of the 2000 America’s Cup, won by the kiwi. He lost the final of the America's Cup race in 2003 and 2007. He also won the Audi MedCup in 2009 and 2010 and the World match race in 2000. • Luna Rossa Challenge (Circolo della Vela Sicilia, Palermo, Italy).

After three competitions, the skipper Massimiliano Sirena and the shipowner Patrizio Bertelli, owner of Prada, have become experts of the America's Cup monohull. Max Sirena entered Prada Challenge in 1998 as the mid-bow and a member of the Italian team in every challenge presented since then. He was part of BMW Oracle Racing during the 2010 successful competition. • Oracle Team Usa (Golden Gate Yacht Club, San Francisco, Usa). The team suffered a setback in October 2012 when it capsized its AC 72 in the bay but it took up again in April 2013 after the launch of the second boat and it remains one of the favorites to win the final. James Spithill ( Australian, born in 1979) is the skipper and in 2010 with Bmw Oracle Racing he became the youngest skipper to ever win the America’s Cup. He is also one of the most expert as well as John Kostecki, tactician. Together they have got good results in the America’s Cup World Series. Spithill is in his fifth competition, he has previously sailed with Young Australia, OneWorld Challenge, Luna Rossa Challenge, BMW Oracle Racing. He has been elected twice Australian sailor of the year and he is world champion in many categories: match race (2005), Melges 24 (2005), match race with the RC44 (2010).

Behind every team we find an organization similar to the one of a business start-up and that includes sailors, yacht designer specialists of many skills and builders, as well as marketing and communication employees and management engineers.

Hi-tech for spectators, too AC LiveLine is a system based on graphic inserts that have been applied for the first time to a movable platform. The idea was developed by the same team that came up with the graphic solutions for the world of American football and for Nascar. The AC LiveLine superimposes useful graphic elements that help better understand what’s going on in the regattas by broadcasting live images from the races to see who has taken the lead at any given time. Guided by a GPS system that allows the route of the catamarans to be monitored with up to two centimeters in precision, the system has made a big splash with the organizers, who decided to use it to handle the event right from the water. The telemetry is useful for moving the buoys rapidly and accurately and for controlling the far ends of the field of the regatta, while making it

easier for the umpires to verify engagement and make judgments as accurate as possible. For the TV format, instead, the aim is to take the spectator to where the action is, to be present at the moment major decisions are being made, while the team is flying through the water at

speeds of over 50 kilometers an hour. To guarantee complete coverage of the event, cameras shooting from a team of helicopters will be flanked by a series of land- and water-based cameras. There are also state-of-the-art, selfcleaning HD cameras with zoom capacity and 4directional mobility and highly sensitive microphones aboard each craft in the competition. On-screen graphics, including the AC LiveLine, help TV viewers to determine the exact location of the competitors in the field and provide tactical information such as distance and speed, all in live, HD images. There is also, of course, the Virtual Eye, a 3D-graphics system that helps understand what’s happening in the race. The result is a truly “onboard” experience for fans.

America’s Cup

Make way for the young people with the Red Bull Youth Scheduled for September 1 through 4 in San Francisco, this competition will see 10 participating youth teams, made up of athletes between 19 and 24 years of age, representing eight different countries. It is a not-to-be-missed opportunity, the chance to get ahead in the America’s Cup: “The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup is a launching pad for talented youth to show off their skills. Each team shows great motivation and undeniable technical abilities. We have chosen the best ones and each team has a change of winning,” explains Hans-Peter Steinacher, the competitions sporting director, together with Roman Hagara, with whom he conquered Olympic two gold medals in the Tornado. The 10 teams, representing the eight countries, qualified for the final through one of two ways: five were chosen after having gone through the Selection Series, while the others passed directly into the finals since they had the support of unions who are signed up to the America’s Cup World Series. Teams from Australia, France, Germany, New Zealand (two teams), Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States (two teams) will be participating in the final. The teams will be racing AC 45s, the rigid-winged catamarans used during the AC World Series. Together with the America’s Cup Event Authority (Acea) Garmin has developed instruments for easy use onboard the safety boats.

The America's Cup is the oldest

international sports trophy , it was

first contested in 1851 predating the modern Olympic Games by 45 years: nine, in fact, were the editions held before the

Athens Games in 1896.

Facts about the 34th AC • It is one of the hardest trophies to win. In over 150 years of history, the Cup has been won by just four countries: USA, Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland. • It was one of the first sporting events to make use of radio to broadcast results from the race, or to have sunglasses with multimedia displays. • In the course of its history it has attracted outspoken, flamboyant and demanding characters, magnates of commerce and industry, who, in spite of their great career success, have rarely dominated the America's Cup • The new graphics systems, designed to make viewers feel they are part of the experience, are Emmy awardwinners . In addition, the team that manages the technology for remote filming of the America's Cup World Series live broadcast was also nominated for an Emmy. • This event will be held for the first time in the protected waters within the San Francisco Bay, instead of its usual venue in the open sea, as established in the Deed of Gift. The rule was amended by mutual agreement by the teams registered for the 2013 event.

Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta

During the race the 45 meter Salperton, which also triumphed in the March edition of the Caribbean regatta Loro Piana, and the 45 meter Wally 148 Saudade have excelled in their majesty. The fleet ‘s colossus has been the modern Zefira, at just under 50 meters.

With a south wind around 8 knots the fleet left for the island of Mortoriotto, at this point the Cruising B and C divisions circumvented it for then pointing to the Island of Monaci, while Cruising A left the islands of Mortorio and Soffi at the starboard side before continuing with the rest of the fleet. Once having reached the Island of Monaci, the Cruising C returned to the Gulf of Pevero where they crossed the finish line, whereas the Cruising A and B pointed towards the Secca of Tre Monti and then, after crossing the strait between Capo Ferro and the Isola of Bisce, returned to the port. On the second day there were very good conditions and the overall standings saw still in command of the division Cruising A, the 25 meters of My Song followed by the British Aegir. The regatta The fleet is divided into three categories based on performance and it races according to the International Superyacht Rules. The Cruising A division brings together the most competitive boats: the 25-meter My Song by Pier Luigi Loro Piana has challenged, among others, the British Aegir by Carbon Ocean Yachts and the 35 meters Firefly, which combines a classic line with high technical performances. In group B Cruising Zefira, the fleet’s giant at 50 meters, raced against Salperton, the 45 meters designed by Dubois and built by Fitzroy, and Cape Arrow, pearl of the South African shipyard Southern Wind. Among the Cruising C there was Karibu, the 27 meters launched this year which competed with Genevieve, a sloop of 37 meters.

lowed by Zefira and at the top of the Cruising C there was the 27 meters Bequia followed by Sarafin. With a south wind of 12 knots, the Cruising C departed in the direction of La Maddalena crossing the strait between Capo Ferro and the Isle of Bisce; after reaching Punta Marginetto, they returned to Porto Cervo leaving to starboard the island of Caprera and that of Monaci Island. A bit longer route for Cruising A and B which left for the Island of Monaci before falling under the Secca of Tre Monti. From here the group B pointed towards Punta Marginetto while group A rose to Barettinelli; both of them then returned to the finish line leaving to starboard Caprera and the Island of Monaci. On the third day of racing the victory of My Song in Category A was confirmed, Salperton was still leading the overall standings of the Cruising B and also Bequia, in the Cruising C division consolidated the first place. The boats departed with a mistral wind around 10 knots and Cruising and A and B sailed towards the island of La Maddalena, they crossed the strait between Punta Marginetto and Barettini and then they left to starboard Spargi and then Barettinelli di Fuori. From here they returned to Porto Cervo passing off the Island of Monaci. The Cruising C, instead, came with the rest of the fleet to Punta Marginetto; hence, after rounding the island of La Maddalena, they returned to Porto Cervo along the coast. The final day saw Salperton on the podium as the winner of the Cruising Division B and as overall champion. In the Cruising A division the 25 meters of Pier Luigi Loro Piana's, My Song, celebrated the victory and the American Bequia was awarded as winner of the Cruising Division C. The awards ceremony was held in Piazza Azzurra. Unfortunately, the almost total absence of wind prevented the 21 super yachts to compete in the final round of a competition that thrilled because of the weather conditions, the spectacular routes and the exciting races. In Cruising A, in addition to the winner, it is also worth mentioning the excellent performance of the British Aegir, the 25 meters of the Carbon Ocean Yachts yard who finished second before Nilaya, the 34 meters ship designed by Reichel Pugh

My Song, which could count on the award-winning tactician Tommaso Chieffi, has always achieved

the best result on corrected time to claim the final victory in Class A.

The 25 meters long My Song, designed by Nauta Yachts for Pier Luigi Loro Piana with water lines by Reichel Pugh Yacht Design, continues to win. It is 14 years old and it was carbon built in 1999 in New Zealand by Cookson. It maintains a very current line.

with Filip Balcaen steering. In the division Cruising B the longstanding cooperation between the English studio Dubois and the New Zealand shipyard Fitzroy triumphed, with Salperton and Zefira respectively at the first and second place. At the third step of the podium climbed the 30 meters of the South African shipyard Southern Wind, Cape Arrow. Among the Cruising C the second place went to Genevieve, just back from a great week with the triumph of the Dubois Cup, and at third place there was Sarafin, the 30 meters ship designed by Dubois and built by Oyster Yachts. Pier Luigi Loro Piana, title sponsor of the event, expressed his satisfaction: "I would like to thank all the participants and the entire organization. We were very lucky that until today the conditions were perfect and we had a great week of racing. We’ll meet everyone the next year. "

magine you had a problem, any kind of problem, with a newly purchased product or one still under warranty. Who has never had

to call a telephone company, for example, to complain about a malfunctioning or broken phone? Who hasn’t had problems with their TV? Or washing machine? Or furnace? I bet that in each of these hypothetical cases, besides the stress of having a broken appliance, you also had to deal with getting the run around from the manufacturer, either being passed like a ping-pong ball from one operator to another, or being kept interminably on hold, to finally end up not getting anything accomplished, or only managing to after days of trying (and spending money). Having had such bad experiences, maybe you are thinking that h a v i n g something b r e a k d o w n with your b o a t would

be a real nightmare. If it’s an engine breakdown, it’s even worse: you’re stuck in the middle of the sea. In fact, it is no fun to be stuck in the middle of the sea, especially on a cruise, but if your boat is equipped with a Caterpillar engine, you can relax: the company guarantees that within 48 hours of your call, no matter where you are in the world (well, I wouldn’t swear about Antarctica), you will have a technician on board to solve the problem. This full-time, global assistance program called Cat Concierge guarantees you total security at sea. Launched to coincide with the market introduction of their nautical diesel engine, the Cat C32, the program began as an experiment between dealer and manufacturer, aimed to improve customer satisfaction among yacht owners. Nowadays, its capacity to improve service quality has won them a much larger client base, including shipyards, brokers and owners. Nigel Parkinson, CEO of Caterpillar Marine Power Systems, decided to take the program up to the global level. “We realized that our customers’ experience was having a positive impact on boat builders, Cat dealers and, obviously, also on Caterpillar sales.” Whether you own a 40-foot boat or a 129-foot one, the service offered is the same: free for the first five years for every yacht purchased from selected, participating boat builders (as long as they are outfitted with a Caterpillar motor, of

For example, as Chris Gates, CEO of Princess, says “We have been enthusiastic about Cat Concierge from the beginning because it meshes perfectly with our customer service philosophy and represents the ideal complement to our own after sales service.” During the 2012 Global Superyacht Forum in Amsterdam, Jim Ruffolo, president and CEO of Burger Yachts,

Customers no longer need to deal with reparation or maintenance issues themselves. Just one call is needed to handle the entire question, beginning to end. New boat owners can also access free, initial, A to Z, sea- trial services. During the trials, Cat engines are run at a particular RPM to evaluate the boat’s performance in ratio to its engine size. This orientation session aims to give owners a sense of confidence with Cat engines and its relative associated tools and instruments. The technicians will explain the different components and systems of the engine, the types and modalities of lubrification to be used, when to schedule periodic maintenance, what processes needs to be done on a daily basis and other relative arguments. But it is the access to assistance anywhere in the world that constitutes its major advantage: Cat Concierge has been operating worldwide since May 2012. One of the main challenges to global operation has been to understand and respond to the very diverse needs and expectations of customers coming from the four corners of the globe. To meet this challenge, instead of relying on one head office, three different headquarters have been set up in geographic areas in different time zones, employing local personnel with an excellent knowledge of the product and a profound understanding of every aspect of the procedure, thus reducing customer waiting time to the bare minimum.

Rollaway bollards Foresti & Suardi and Christian Grande have created a line of bollards, after a careful aesthetic and material research, to turn them into furniture and decoration pieces, while maintaining their inherent instrumental value. The new retractable bollards in stainless steel have a clean and functional shape, summed up in a rectangular plate with slightly curved and rounded sides, soft in appearance and valuable in a polished finish, and particularly satisfying for the eye, also thanks to the peculiar ability to "disappear "or, better, to retract until they become a simple plate (and thus also free of contraindications as the danger of tripping or excessive clutter when not used). The bollard, made of AISI 316L stainless steel (high quality and resistance), retracts itself by two pistons to become coplanar with the mounting plate. www.forestiesuardi.it

Studio Arnaboldi Working with 150 shipyards around the world – building pleasure boats, commercial vessels and military craft.Trained in his family’s company, today Marco Arnaboldi works with the biggest names in ship building, always at the cutting edge of the newest technologies and techniques by Laura Biazzi An architect and naval engineer, Marco Arnaboldi was already hard at work at his parents’ company, AB Yachts, while he was still a student at the University of Genoa. AB Yachts was founded by his father, Angelo, in 1992 to try out his own ideas for hydrojetpropelled speedboats and the development of lightweight ways to outfit them.

This is the context in which Marco completed his training, both as a designer and a builder. The strength of Studio Arnaboldi lies in its ability to come up with solid solutions. AB Yachts was an excellent training ground for Marco where he learned to perfect exceptional boats and apply revolutionary building and outfitting techniques. Today he brings these skills to an exacting clientele who demand lightness, reliability and performance.

This 62-meter, 700-ton patrol boat can reach speeds of up 36 knots using 14,800 horsepower. It can function using one, two, three or four engines without suffering any cavitation. It is widely used in China and Japan where waves average about three meters in height and top speeds are almost always required.

With four small engines, this foil cat catamaran can transport 300 people at 55 knots even in waves as high as 2.5 meters. An algorithm was specifically created to handle foils and interceptors, and all the finished elements of the entire structure were carefully analyzed.

Collaborations In Italy Studio Arnaboldi has collaborated with a number of boat builders including AB Yachts, Azimut Benetti, Isa, Baglietto, Sessa Marine, Fipa Group, Vismara, Vsy, Intermarine and very soon others will be added. He has also worked with some of the world’s greatest designers, such as Espen Oino, Spadolini, Luca Dini, Guido de Groot and Three4design. When he left AB Yachts in 2010, after having completed the line of AB boats with the creation of the AB116 (which remains a benchmark addition to the international nautical industry), Marco devoted himself to R&D, working with the Russian researcher, Professor Stanislav Pavlov at Saint Petersburg’s MTD, bringing solutions to the pleasure-craft market which, though common in military applications, were hitherto unknown in the commercial sector. It is the change time. Leaving the uncertainties in the past, it is necessary to look to the future with a different spirit, based on efficient and effective projects. The organizers of the Genoa Boat Show know it well, who in just five months (and 47 meetings with groups of exhibitors from all sectors and all regions) have analyzed the needs and redefined the logistics and layout of the fair, to meet the requirements of all the operators and to optimize each resource.

The protagonists Anton Francesco Albertoni, Ucina President: "This formula was adopted after having collected the needs of businesses, more and more attentive to a more complete, more streamlined, interactive salon which responds to the current market demand." Marina Stella, Ucina General Manager: "It is vital to appraise the areas in the water and so we worked for a layout designed to give more space in this direction and to give the visitor a direct contact with the boat." Antonio Bruzzone, Genova Fair CEO: "We have created an additional parking for 200 cars inside the Fair for exhibitors and 4 new dining areas. There will be also an online ticket office which provides the purchase of the entrance to the salon at a reduced price of 12 euro. " Sara Armella, Genova Fair President, "The Salone Nautico 2013 will be very different from those that preceded it. What we propose this year is an advanced formula of event, starting from its container, entirely revised, which will invite a new way to visit and use it. "

The unique style of an exhibition remains so important that evolves in the use of space and settings.

The first major change concerns the duration of the show: five days. In this way, with a concentrated influx of visitors, it is easier to manage the staff attendance at the booth and to optimize the economic commitment. There has also been an architectural intervention that gives more impact and style to the whole exhibition area and that involves the entire fair industry. In this way it is possible to enhance the products making the visit more exciting, immersed in a setting that accompanies the visitors as they move on land and at sea. This layout is banking on his aquatic vocation and gives visitors an insight to the culture of boating, creating the conditions for the revival of the industry.

Genova 2013 Today more than ever, in fact, the Genoa event is a unique opportunity of confrontation with a real market: it is through the dialogue with visitors and the observation of competitors that products, in line with customer requirements, can be delivered. Engaging the audience will be a must and for this reason the marine environment of the fair will be exploited and expanded to give the opportunity to test the boats in their natural environment. It will be an interactive and complete experience for the visitors and the opportunity to enhance the products of the shipyards. "Being able to carry out sea trials for all the boats at the Show is a very important value not only for the business of the companies but also to give the visitor the excitement of going to sea. For too long the boating sector has been associated with the concept of unattainable luxury, while the products on display are the result of our passion and feelings that only the navigation can give, "says Peter Vassena of Brunswick Group and Ucina vice president.

The 640 is powered by two Man 1,200 hp with a maximum speed of 30 knots. The 640 sleek lines show the personal inspiration of Alberto Mancini originally from the field of sportscar design while the large windows allow light to fill up the interior spaces. Different details of the exterior have been designed to emphasize the living space of the yacht. The furniture derives from a

megayacht interior design concept. The choice of details and materials such as Alcantara and warm leather combined with glass and mirrors is able to create a sophisticated game of contrasts and light. In the sleeping area there are three cabins, two of which double and a twin.

A decisive role is played by the master suite where the use of mirrored windows increas-

Hemisphere 44m t hasn’t always been smooth sailing, bringing the Hemisphere from the drawing board to the launching harbor. Her

owner had spent a long time searching for just the right yacht for him and his family and over the years had rented many different boats, both sailboats and motor yachts, until he felt he had an excellent idea of just what kind of vessel he was looking for. Initially, he wanted a 35-meter catamaran so it seemed obvious that the choice would have fallen on the two awardwinning designers, Van Peteghem and Lauriot Prévost, based on their many years of experience in designing catamarans (about 240 from 1984 to date!), including the BMW Oracle, winner of the America’s Cup, and the 41-meter Douce France, just to name a couple.

A bit of history Construction began on the Hemisphere in the USA at the end of 2005, with a projected delivery date in 2007, but Derektor shipyard had some financial troubles that slowed down production, eventually forcing the owner to consider transporting the two large aluminum hulls to another site where they could be integrated into what, at 44 meters, was to become the largest sailing catamaran in the world. In fact, as the project developed, its dimensions also increased, even though it never exceeded 500 tons. After a long and careful selection process, the British shipyard, Pendennis, was chosen to complete construction. The yacht was moved to Falmouth, in Cornwall, in 2009 and a couple of years later made her triumphant debut at the Munich Boat Show. The long wait and the owner’s patience finally paid off.

The main bridge’s outside area that leads to the inner hall of 100 square meters is a huge terrace, partly sheltered, where there are sun beds, conversation areas, a bar and a dining room (on the left), which if necessary can be closed with glass panels and airconditioned.

Hemisphere 44m Guests are accommodated in five cabins whose color schemes and furnishings, while similar in theme, are each laid out and appointed individually so that no two are the same.

The design Let’s examine the main points upon which the two architects hinged this impressive project: the owner, an impassioned scuba diver who loves organizing group dives, requested a tender large enough to carry all the members of a diving party to the site of the dive at the same time, while the big catamaran had to be both elegant and sleek. Fitting a large tender into a sleek container is no easy feat. It required increasing the size of the catamaran. After examining a number of proposed solutions through 3-D simulations, the best spot for storing the tender turned out to be in the stern, where a seagull-wing structure connects the two big hulls. This structure, which had been developed to solve some technical issues, turned out to be perfect for holding a tender over 8 meters long with its relative towing and launching equipment. Two big doors open downward, like the trapdoors of a bomber, allowing the C-Quip davit to lower a capacious 8.30 meter Scorpion inflatable dinghy into the water between the twin hulls. A complex engineering solution: a suspended garage, designed by the experts at Bmt Nigel Gee Ltd. Mission accomplished!

Interiors Fundamental to the owners was – and still is – the desire to

have a big yacht where the whole family and plenty of friends could relax luxuriously while truly living a seafaring life. A family yacht, first of all, but also one that can be hired out. From this idea came the choice to use materials which were refined and sophisticated, but wouldn’t get ruined the first time a first drop of water fell on them, in rooms that designed to be cozy and luminous, with a touch of the exotic to evoke the idea of travel and adventures. Hired to design the interiors, the Michael Leach Design studio collaborated closely with the owners to create a sophisticated environment made of novel combinations of varied materials. The female component of the owning couple was particularly involved in every step of the interior design process, providing the designers with precise indications. Great attention was paid to all the trim and finer details, designed to highlight and complement the main materials: walnut, oak and African rosewood. Fifteen types of marble and stone, just as many types of leather, including stingray and crocodile adorn environments planned for enhancing a sense of well-being and pleasure during long sea voyages. The absolute height of luxury can be seen in the immense, panoramic living room (about 100 sq m), laid out to include various areas devoted to socializing, several for play and corners just for quiet relaxation.

Films and videogames are available in the adjacent TV room, located in the portside hull, a few steps below the level of the saloon. The main dining room is in the cockpit, in the enormous cockpit. Usually guests enjoy dining al fresco but, if necessary, the area can be closed off by means of glass panels and air conditioned. Another, less formal dining option can be found on the flybridge where an elegant, aquamarineglass-topped oval table is decorated with a map of the world. Towards which paradise are we sailing? Guests are accommodated in five cabins whose color schemes and furnishings, while similar in theme, are each laid out and appointed individually so that no two are the same. Fore of the saloon, a small room leads to a portside guest cabin and two adjacent VIP cabins which can be united to form an enormous, 16-meter suite with two bathrooms and a living/study area. Both have direct access to an outdoor terrace furnished with sofas. A net platform extends from this terrace connecting the two hulls and there is a gangway leading to a panoramic seating area at the prow. The stern of the portside hull houses two additional guest cabins, one of which, designed for the owners’ nephews, has twin beds plus two hide-a-beds for their friends. The interiors were made by Metrica, the renowned German furniture company. The starboard hull is dedicated to service areas and housing for a seven/eight member crew: it has three crew cabins plus the captain’s quarters, a comfortable dinette and laundry rooms. Accessible from outside, this hull also houses a wellappointed galley linked to the grand salon by means of an inside stairway. The architects managed to create a rational puzzle, fitting in all the technical and storage areas for diving equipment, a windsurf, a kayak, a Seabob and water skis as well as a garage holding the service tender, a 4.5-meter Castoldi dinghy. The portside hull also holds all the diving gear including a vast quantity of wetsuits, fins and tanks as well as two compressors.

ith its Vintage series, Codecasa dips back in time, revi-

siting and reinterpreting the styles and fashions of yachting’s glory days, the 20s and 30s, when aristocrats and tycoons berthed their luxurious pleasure craft in the marinas of Capri, Portofino, Montecarlo, Saint-Tropez when they were still exclusive and had not yet become meccas of mass tourism. The name itself of the series is a clear indication of the company’s intent to play on our fascination with the atmosphere of yesteryear. The first yacht in the series introduced by the Tuscan shipyard (from Viareggio), a harmonious, 42-meter model, was applauded at its debut at the 2011 Munich Boat Show while a second specimen is slated to be launched shortly. The lines are understated and almost austere with just that touch of ostentation typical of yachts of the era. The hull and superstructure’s navyand-white color scheme emphasizes its sobriety. Externally, the yacht has a compact look, with high gunwales, particularly at the prow, and tight superstructure volumes. The vertical prow, designed to cut through the waves with determination, blends harmoniously with the design of the stern, just slightly oblique, giving her a remarkable overall look of stately beauty. With her balance of forms and volumes and her clean lines, the 42 Vintage

truly give the impression of being larger than her 42.5 meters.

Exteriors and interiors The yacht is laid out on three decks plus a sundeck which, while not large, is perfectly appointed for taking in the view while enjoying the open air. There are two indoor areas dedicated to entertaining, one on the main deck and another on the upper deck, both furnished with living and dining rooms. The main deck sports a round table, shaded by the overhang of the upper deck, surrounded by comfy chairs with a large sofa situated aft. A pair of symmetrical ladders leads from the cockpit to the bathing platform at the stern.

The fabrics for the interior and exterior are by Ralph Lauren, Dedar and Manuel Canovas. The sofa capitonee white is by

Poltrona Xaira of Tolentino and the dining table of the upper deck is the result of a custom design made by Dolcefarniente.

History Few shipyards can boast a history, and especially a consolidated family tradition, as long as Codecasa’s. Evidence of master shipwright Giovanni Battista Codecasa’s activity in Viareggio was documented as long ago as 1825. The shipyard itself was constituted at the turn of the century, in 1902, when Giovan Battista Codecasa, descendant of a long line of shipwrights, decided to set up his own company. Just a few years later, his was to become a highly-renowned shipyard. Generation after generation, the Codecasas have continued this family tradition. Since the early 1970s, Fulvio Codecasa, flanked by his daughters and sons-in-law, has been at the company’s helm: a company characterized by its seriousness and reserve, by its capacity to incorporate innovation into its products without compromising the recognizable style and elegance that have always made Codecasa yachts outstanding.

On the upper deck the exteriors have been divided into two complementary zones: a dining area adjacent to an indoor saloon and a sea-facing terrace aft, graced with comfortable sunbeds. Portside, a tender and its davit nonchalantly left in plain sight further recall a bygone atmosphere, while an additional tender is stored, in accordance with modern usage, in the large stern garage. A gangway leads from the terrace all the way around the perimeter of the deck, passing in front of the lateral wheelhouses, which provide two external steering positions. These models have not been designed with pools or hot tubs, but the shipyard can accommodate owners’ customization requests to include them. The interior layout is classic with the great saloon on the main deck flanked by a generous L-shaped galley, while there is a small lobby starboard with stairs leading to the

upper and lower decks. All the passageways on each deck have been kept quite narrow in favor of larger spaces available for the living and sleeping areas, although there are independent passageways and stairways for guests and crew to access their quarters. The large master suite, featuring a double dressing room and double bathroom, is located forward on the main deck. Four guest cabins, two double and two twin, each of course with in-suite facilities, are instead situated below decks. Even the crew receive white glove treatment: large twin cabins, a galley and dinette and a service area replete with fridge, freezer and washing machine take up a generous portion of the forward part of the lower deck. Returning upstairs, we find a dining room on the upper deck served by a large pantry and, forward, a modern wheelhouse equipped with state-of-the-art navigational instrumentation.

Codecasa Shipyards The Group owns four shipyards in Viareggio and has also recently inaugurated a new manufacturing structure in the Navicelli area of Pisa. Two of the shipyards in Viareggio, Cantieri Navali Ugo Codecasa Spa and Codecasa Tre Spa, each cover over 7000 square meters, 6000 of which are indoor. These are dedicated to the construction of vessels up to 90 meters in length. A third structure, Codecasa Due, located in Darsena Toscana, one of the oldest in the city, is where the hundred-year-old tradition of the company developed. Currently it is mostly used for maintenance and refitting services, but the Ognitempo motorboats that Codecasa produces for the Italian Coast Guard are also made there.

The fourth manufacturing area in Viareggio is known as DR11 and is situated in the city’s new industrial zone. Covering over 1000 square meters (of which over 2/3 is indoor), it sees the construction of the 30 to 40-meter-long, high-performance open yacht series, made entitrely in aluminum. In the Navicelli industrial area, laid out along the impressive work of hydraulic engineering built between 1563 and 1575 linking Pisa to the port of Livorno, stands the largest and most recent of the company’s yards. Covering 25,000 square meters, with vast open areas and four enormous speciallyequipped warehouses, the yard is designed to produce yachts of up to 80 meters.

Furniture The interior design is in perfect harmony with the exterior lines: a classically nautical style permeated by understated luxury expressed by the choice of materials and subtle touches of class. Franco and Anna Maria Della Role, Codecasa’s “historical” architects, have taken their cue in designing the interiors from the glamorous style reminiscent of cottages at the Hampton’s, that Long Island sea-side location glorified in so many Hollywood films. The white, main saloon embraces a lovely bar on the right facing a conversation area comprising a large, L-shaped sofa upholstered in navy and white striped fabric served by a dark, hardwood, colonial-style coffee table. The back of the room has a more formal living room with a C-shaped sofa in light-colored capitonée leather, with a similar coffee table. The master suite is very comfortable and sophisticated, with its carefully selected fabrics: a white bedspread with beige brocade and scarlet cushions. The red loveseat starboard and the desk/vanity chair on the opposite side liven up the room. Both master baths are also in white. They share a common shower, trimmed in white Carrara marble and adorned with large, beveled mirrors.

The master suite has large windows and is majestically located at the bow of the bridge deck, while in the lower deck the spacious guest area hosts four cabins, including two with double beds and two with twin beds. The bathrooms are made in marble statues and are finished with strips in Emperador marble or blue lapislazuli. In the guest cabins the upholstery has the same colors already seen in the other areas of the yacht: white with large rows navy blue or a pleasant scored white, beige and red.

Codecasa brand is known for exclusive, custom-made, displacement, steel-andaluminum yachts and open speedboats in aluminum alloys. Among its clientele are some of the most influential individuals in the world, including top names in fashion. Giorgio Armani has owned the Mariù and more recently the 65-m Main, while Dolce & Gabbana have been seen with their 51-meter Regina d’Italia in all the trendiest places. The Tuscan company is currently building a second model in the Codecasa 42 Vintage series (constr. F 75), slated to be launched next summer, and will proceed with the construction of another in the Vintage fleet, a 50-meter model, set to be delivered in the spring of 2015. At the same time, at the yards in Navicelli, Codecasa is working on the first in a series of open Codecasa 50s, continuing the line that already includes models of 35, 41 and 45 meters. This model, totally constructed in light metal alloys based on a design by Andrea Bacigalupo, will be ready in the summer of 2013. Other projects currently being defined by the company’s technical department include the majestic Codecasa 72 and a new version of the Codecasa 65.

Performance and engines The Codecasa 42 Vintage was not designed to be a racing yacht. On the contrary, it is meant to be truly a pleasure vessel, dedicated to those who wish to travel long distances in great comfort, relaxation and safety. With a highly-resistant stainless steel hull, its superstructure is instead made of 5083 H321 aluminum, with a 400-ton displacement when fully loaded. The engine room, consistent with the general configuration of the yacht, hosts two tough Caterpillar 3512C engines that reach 1230 kW of power (1650 hp at 1800 rpm) and can take the boat up to speeds of 17 knots. The fuel tank has a 77,000 liter capacity and at cruising speeds of 11 knots, is autonomous for transatlantic voyages.

This yacht is a good solution for the nostalgic for the "good time that was" and who does not believe that can’t be modernity without a break with what was previously: it comes back on steps already done for drawing alongside new paths. Above, the wheelhouse; in the round, the engines room.

“I

t is simplicity that is difficult to make,” according to Bertolt Brecht. This same concept must have been

at the heart of Philippe Briand’s thinking when he set his team of architects at Jeanneau to design the Sun Odyssey 469. How to make the best use of space on board? Simple: putting everything as aftward as possible. How? First of all by bringing the two ship’s wheels closer to the transom. The designers managed this by eliminating the pilots’ seats, but this doesn’t mean that you have to remain standing to pilot the 469, just that the seats don’t take up the entire transom beam width. The seats are L-shaped and nestled into the corners of the stern. No “hunchback” or bench and therefore no added volume taking away from the space available for the cockpit. The stern sports only a transom hatch that can be opened out, becoming an ample bathing platform. Wheels, instrument console and handrails are located externally aft, allowing for a very roomy, uncluttered cockpit. It measures 300 x 180 square centimeters, which is a lot for a craft only 13.65 meters long. Limiting the pilots’ seats to two corner benches not occupying the entire beam offers three other advantages. It makes descending belowdecks less steep than usual. It makes for a roomier dinette, allowing the ladder to be placed at a wider angle. This means the descent is gentler and easier. The second advantage is that the uncluttered cockpit allows for more room in the two aft cabins. Usually these spaces have a catacomb effect, with the cockpit’s superstructure intruding into the sleeping areas, taking up

108

space and air. This is not the case with the Sun Odyssey 469, since the two helm wheels are as far aft as possible. Finally, this set up allows you to store the sails in a sail locker located at the tip of the prow. The below deck layout concentrates most elements aft, as well. The master cabin is big enough without extending too far forward. The head of the berth is wider than the rest leaving forward space free for stowing sails, fenders, ropes and safety equipment. Another characteristic, written into the DNA of these models, is their cruising propensity. The Sun Odissey 469’s deck is laid out for top maneuverability. Everything is concentrated in the cockpit, including the jib carriage. Halyard and sheets run under the deckhouse superstructure and outside the cockpit. Everything is neatly stowed, allowing for more accessible living space. The mainsail traveler is in fact located forward of the companionway. The halyard winches are kept near the two wheels, allowing the helmsmen to regulate them without disturbing the other passengers. The stern pulpit railings near the two helm wheels are particularly well placed. They are, of course, made of stainless steel and their design recalls the look of the wheels themselves, just ten centimeters forward of them. This means there is always something solid handy to grab hold of, while at the same time keeping the structure light, vistas clear and onboard movements unobstructed. There are other details that affirm the basic philosophy behind the boat designers’ choices. There is no door to close the entryway to the cabins below deck, or, more precisely there are two transparent folding doors that do not take precious space away from the cockpit. Traditionally, the hatch was stowed in a locker, but every time you had to

The lateral windows and those in the cabins are in two parallel lines. This means that whether you are sitting on a couch or a bunk, the lower windows are at eye level so that there is always a view.

111 leave the boat, it ended up buried under mooring lines, life savers, fenders and so forth making it difficult to get to. Also designed to save space, the jib carriages are located in the pilot house and do not block the gangway. Should a jib be chosen which is larger by 140%, it will of course need to be positioned on the gangways. Even though space and comfort are universally appreciated, each sailing enthusiast has his own particular demands. Providing options for customizing, therefore, is essential. Starting with the sails, the range is decidedly vast. There are the standard Dacron sails, of course, but you can also order high-performance sails that are geometrically the same, but made of taffeta, which is a lighter and more efficient fabric. The mainsail is available in a furling model, which reduces the cloth to just a few meters. Various sizes of jibs are also available. In addition to the standard 106%, there is a 140% model and a self-winding flake smaller than standard. There is also the Code 0 option, a prow sail that can be used in winds between 4 and 12 knots. It is ideally used with a 106% jib. It makes less sense to use it with a 140%. What’s really nice about the Code 0, besides the vast surface of the sail itself and that you can use it with jibs measuring between 60° and 120°, is that it comes with a closed-circuit furling system leading back to the cockpit. It is directly attached to the stemhead with a snaphook and so is a cinch to roll up. The same way of thinking holds true belowdecks. To meet any sailor’s possible needs, there are three different layout options. Livability is optimum in every room but what impressed us most was the amount of light:

To gain onboard space, all fittings have been set as far aft as possible, with the wheels very near the transom.

>

In addition to the model we tested, the “private” version with three cabins and two heads, the Sun Odyssey 469 is available with two other layouts: with three cabins and or a charter model with four cabins and four heads.

And how much does it flow? We tried out the Sun Odyssey 469 on a day with very little breeze. The wind was only at about 10 knots, which was actually a good thing, because it’s important to verify that the boat isn’t just a “dead weight” in the doldrums. A cruising sailboat doesn’t have huge sails but does carry quite a bit of weight (just think of the water tank that holds more than 600 liters). The sails on the model we tried were rigged for performance, therefore were made of taffeta rather than Dacron. The 469 is no “dead weight.” Even with hardly any wind, she performs well. We particularly appreciated the Code 0. Sailing close hauled, we got up to 9.4 knots. The sail was really easy to use thanks to the furler and the commands rigged back to the cockpit. We also really liked the helmsmen’s seating. As we said, this does not consist of a single element running beam-width along the stern, but two corner units. They are quite comfortable and allow unobstructed views of the sails and the prow. The performance of the

ere’s a great example of how a crisis can pave the way for an opportunity, just as Einstein said. With this in mind,

Jupiter considers the nautical industry particularly ripe with opportunity and, with Second Life Top Yachts, intends to transform a niche sector into a concrete market necessity. The program was formed to evaluate, manage and handle the entire sales process of nautical merchandise resulting from repossessed leased items whose payments are delinquent, overdue or expired, guaranteeing fully integrated services, following the entire negotiation process through each successive phase. Their activity is supported by a modern, user-friendly web portal (www.secondlifetopyachts.it), accessible to registered members. The brand, launched in 2012 by Jupiter, a subsidiary of the Cerved Group and a major name in the field of programs for the management of difficult credit, has already become a top player on an international level in the field of used nautical equipment and boats. Their success is verified by the number of vessels they have sold: in 2012, 66 boats were sold in15 different countries around the world. This year that number is destined to increase, seeing that Second Life Top Yachts has greatly invested in increasing their visibility in affiliated marinas, like the one in Rome, where an Assilea-

Second Life Top Yachts can count on the collaboration of experts with proven experience and expertise, both in taking charge of the boat and during the inspection of the potential buyer.

> Strong points

• Quicker and higher values for resale of boats. • Lower management costs (important partnerships with reliable dealers and eight marinas, a significant number of boats being handled, giving our business partners a high enough volume of work to allow large-scale savings, commission-propelled incentives to assure maximum sales performance in ratio to management costs). • Reliability and high service quality (well-prepared team, quick and streamlined sales process there is an agent on call at the marina for each boat, flanked by a technical reference person in the home office – clear and honest information about the boat’s condition and the company’s activity). • Commercial network of carefully selected and highly-competent Italian and international brokers.

sponsored convention was held. The convention examined questions posed by the nautical market, with Assilea aiming to attract future clients and consolidate its identity. “The economic crisis has made this a particularly strategic sector,” according to Andrea Mignanelli, CEO at Jupiter, “and an increasing number of ‘problem’ boats means that ours has become a highly professional and rapidly growing market. One of our goals this year is to increase the number of boats available by directly involving private individuals.” In charge of the nautical division at Second Life Top Yacht is Milvio Ricci. We asked him to tell us something about the market and the company’s development. How do you think these first 18 months of activity have been? This year and a half has gone very well, with many of our expectations and objectives being reached. The kind of work to be done changed along the way from what we had predicted, but positive results quickly followed. At the beginning, we planned to deal exclusively with banks, but the platform soon lent itself to working with shipyards and private individuals. Cerved Group is a consolidated name in the business, and together with Jupiter we have been able to move forward confidently. In 16 months we handled over 100 boats. Last year we closed 66 deals and so far this year we have already managed more than 40. My personal goal is to reach 100 by the end of 2013.

Does this mean that you think that the market is not dead, but that it just depends on what you have to offer and how you offer it? Exactly. It depends on what kind if guarantees you can offer your clients. Unfortunately in Italy we are accustomed to “shooting ourselves in the foot,” practically boasting about our liabilities, instead of focusing on the assets of our creativity combined with our many skills. Our company is proud to be Italian. We introduce ourselves as such and proudly flaunt our origins. Do you only deal in boats that have been repossessed by the banks? Primarily, yes. Our company was born by acquiring this branch of business which supplied us with our initial portfolio. We continued to grow and are now working with 10 or 12 different banks. Since banks don’t really know much about managing boats, there has been some risk of their depreciating due to lack of proper upkeep. Has this problem been addressed? We are talking about short-term turnover and we have dealt with the problem. We analyze what maintenance work needs to be done for each boat and carry out the most urgent to maintain its value.

> The Assilea convention

Second Life Top Yachts organized the second annual Assilea-sponsored convention, at the port of Rome, to discuss the current state of affairs in the nautical industry. Market projections were examined, with a particular emphasis on the resale of used boats. To relaunch the used boat market in Italy, the new closed registry procedures and the state of the art for single-registry for pleasure boats were also discussed. There were also in-depth discussions about insurance and what kind of coverage is best for fleets and for individual boats. For the occasion over 20 boats, from 12 to 25 meters, from both Italian and foreign boat builders, were opened up to visitors. Among these was the Don Quijote, a 17-meter sailboat built in 1953 that belonged to Eva Peron. Representatives from sector associations who participated included managing director of Assilea, Gianluca De Candia, and Roberto Neglia, in charge of institution relations for Ucina, Eugenio Caropresi, coordinating officer for Assicurazioni Generali and, representing governmental institutions, Miriam Nardelli, from the Infrastructure and Transport Ministry.

How does it work? It is a three-step process. 1.Repossession: location, repossession, transport. 2.Restoration: berthing, refitting, storage. 3.Resale: appraisal, remarketing, post-sales. Cerved Group business information know-how reinforces all three steps, matching the wealth of economic information at their disposal with Jupiter’s expertise in the field of credit risk management. The marriage of these skills is the answer to a growing demand on the part of banks, financial institutions, companies and individuals for a more complete, integrated risk management system.

Milvio Ricci Are you working only with banking institutions? No, in the sense that, while the bulk of our clients effectively are banks, we have extended our services to include shipyards, private customers and businesses. What sets you apart? Our approach to the nautical industry is completely novel. Years ago I had drifted away from this sector because I wasn’t finding it stimulating, but with Second Life Top Yacht I decided to get back into it because it provides the right prospective and I have been able to offer the company the expertise that I have acquired in my many years of past experience.

Nowadays we know that we are dealing with trustworthy clients who simply do not have economic difficulties and who, similarly, know that they can feel safe with us. What kind of products are we talking about? We currently have about 120 boats of all sizes from 11 meters up in our portfolio. Before putting them up for sale, we service them, estimate their value based on current market values, without undervaluing them, while remaining more competitive than others on the market. I have worked in the shipbuilding business so I am aware of the issues that a yard faces for the construction of each individual vessel - the value, the difficulties, the commitment involved – so I know that they should be sold at fair prices.

Marina d’Arechi At a gateway to the world known locations such as Capri, Amalfi and Positano you can find the Marina d’Arechi, whose project idea was born between 2000 and 2002. It is separated from the coast by a channel of about 70 meters and joined to the land by foot and carriage bridges. It is a facility set in the most popular natural landscape in Italy, many of which are "World Heritage" surveyed by UNESCO. In addition the Marina is just a few kilometers from Salerno airport and high speed rail. The wharf is dedicated to the users of the port and it is equipped with all the services (showers, toilets, changing rooms and deposits), as well as parking lots. Instead, on the land side a public promenade has been designed, shaded by rows of trees.

>

The name comes from Arechis II, the Lombard prince. In 758 he became Governator of a vast stretch of Lombard territory, comprising the dukedom of Benevento. In 774 he made Salerno the capital of this land.

BARCHE August 2013

The Marina d’Arechi has 1000 mooring berths for boats from 10 to up 80 metres long. To ensure the integrity of the coastal engineering ,to moor comfortably and to meet the highest standards of safety and security demanded, the design has been underpinned by extensive meteorological and marine studies, including state-of-the-art physical and mathematical modelling simulations under the direction of the Institute for Research HR Wallingford in the UK. There will be 27,000 sq. metres of landscaped gardens and pathways and 8,700 sq. metres of commercial and leisure space. The Salerno Port Village will have an amphitheater overlooking the sea and the futuristic building designed by Santiago Calatrava. The area dedicated to music and entertainment is already available for events with the most important Italian and international stars.
