The theorem of the streetlight “If there is one thing worse than the modern weakening of major moral it is the modern strengthening of minor morals” Gilbert Keith Chesterton, Tremendous Trifles, 1909 In the spring of 2011 I wrote that for our country to be able to take a leap forward, we needed a government led by the economist and dean of the prestigious Bocconi University, Professor Mario Monti. I have been banging my head

spenders, modifying the general fiscal situation and introducing control mechanisms to limit tax evasion. These are unreasonable expectations in view of what’s happening in the world today: more than five years of stagnation, a massive increase in unemployment and temporary work, the decline of the middle class, the explosion of inequality. Aureus XV Absolute It is a fast sailing yacht built from carbon fibers and epoxy resin, highly automated and easy to handle by a single member of the crew. The hull, 15 meters long, and the deck have been built in vacuum infused carbon fiber and epoxy resin to ensure lightness and strength. The mast and the boma are in high modulus carbon so they are lighter and stiffer. The sails made in D4 membrane are heavy and guarantee high performances. All the woodwork and the core are made of foam to reduce weight. The Naval Architecture is by Emmanuel Rossi; Eric Benqué, who designed the interiors, has proposed sober luxury which combines the clean lines with durable materials: leather, wood, carbon, stainless steel.

We’ve gone global To be successful in the world of pleasure boats, you need to provide highly-efficient assistance services. We spoke with Paolo Guidali from CGT by Camilla Bianchi Italian megayachts are exported all over the world, and the whole world is their showcase.

Paolo Guidal is Pleasure Craft manager at CGT Energia. 42

BARCHE October 2013

Because a 50-meter vessel was surely not made to sit in the marina or stick close to the coastline. This is why it is easy to find an Italian-made or outfitted boat anywhere in the world: in the Pacific, the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean or the North Atlantic. Wherever they can go, they can also breakdown. Being able to respond to problems in real time and arrive to solve them wherever they happen is fundamental for the success of a great yacht company. CGT Energia, the Italian dealer for Caterpillar boat motors and generators, is dedicated to meeting this challenge and has made world-wide service its calling card. We spoke with Paolo Guidali, Pleasure Craft manager at CGT Energia. Modern yachts require a higher level of service than in the past. How do you deal with this dynamic? Fortunately, we were born global, because our products are sold the world over. So our interventions can be carried out anywhere in the world: we need to be able to respond in real time to the requests of a highly demanding clientele that is always on the move and be able to solve any critical situation our customers might encounter. First of all, breakdowns do not respect office hours or time zones. We have to be available 24 hours a day. Secondly, competence is paramount. We have to make sure that the person we send, no matter where the customer is, is a well-

trained technician who can handle the job. And thirdly, we have to coordinate work hours, and not just our own: everybody knows how difficult it can be to get service in Italy the week of the 15th of August. Well, Fridays in Saudi Arabia is exactly the same thing, just like the 4th of July in Florida or Hawaii. So in addition to providing call center services, you essentially have to act as cultural mediators… Well, that’s taking it a bit too far, but certainly in order to provide services in an international world, you need to be able to forge relationships based on trust. It is no longer enough to have technical know-how, nowadays knowing how to relate to other people is fundamental. The various organizations around the world under the Cat umbrella all follow the company line. Dedicated to sharing services, they are able to overcome geographical and cultural obstacles and establish trust-based relationships. What differentiates this relationship, in the world of yachting, from the type of relationships found in other kinds of nautical sectors? The “yacht factor” carries certain characteristics that definitely were not designed to make our work easy. Someone who purchases a yacht, particularly in times of economic difficulty, have a particular kind of sensitivity. Their expectations are extremely high, sometimes even exasperating. In dealing with our customers, we keep this in mind. On the other hand, we would rather take on a reasonable amount of risk if it makes the relationship work. For example, we have sometimes chosen to send a technician with spare parts to the other side of the world before we had effectively verified the necessity, in order to be sure to be able to guarantee quick, efficient service. For our part, we need to be reasonably sure that the customer is accurately following our instructions. Moreover, since we also service products other than our own, we have found that when we have established a good working relationship with the client, they are likely to replace their motors and generators, when the time comes, with our products. I would say that oftentimes it is the service that stimulates the sale. Or, in any case, if a service customer becomes a purchaser, it is a good indication that they were pleased with the service.

Perini Navi Cup

The Perini Navi Cup is a biennial race that is traditionally held at the end of August in the wonderful waters of the Costa Smeralda.

T

he Perini Navi Cup is a truly special regatta that transforms a dozen super comfortable, easy-going megay-

acht cruise ships into aggressive racing boats, manned by crews that may even include internationally famous professionals. The rules of the regatta guarantee that the race will be fun and spectacular both to the participants and the spectators alike. The yachts don’t take off all at the same time since they are too big and their maneuvering times too long to allow engagement close together at the starting line. They are instead launched three minutes apart, with the orders for their departure varying depending on wind strength. In this way

the fastest yachts soon overtake the slower ones, making it exciting to watch them round the buoys (very exciting!). The classification of the boats is based on their dimensions, displacement, sail area and other parameters so that on the water, in real time, these parameters can be “translated” into time handicaps to even out the performance difference in a very diverse array of boats. In chronicling the three days of the regatta, we need to add a brief note about the setting of this sailing/social event that puts team Perini on the front lines, supported by a rich lineup of important sponsors. The main sponsor this year was Monclair, who dressed the participants in garments from their Monclair Grenoble collection, Maison Pommery and the jewelry company from Valenza Po, Vhernier.

August 29 With the wind at about eight knots and clear skies, the first regatta in the program prepared to launch. The starting line was positioned off the coast from Porto Cervo from which the yachts then headed off at a rapid clip towards Secca dei Tre Monti, about 50 kilometers away. Watching them round the buoys was breathtaking, with the Maltese Falcon stealing the scene from the other contestants and the P2 shooting out ahead of the rest of the fleet towards the bowline buoy. When she reached it, the P2 had more than an hour’s advanSilencio (ex tage over her closest follower, but Perseus) a when the corrected time was fac, tored in, this elegant, 38-meter, aluminum sloop slipped into second which has place behind the Silencio. On the other hand, Dawn Riley’s tactics aboard the Silencio displayed the sailing expertise she acquired in participating in the America’s Cup, giving the decisive edge to the gratifying results for this 50-meter ketch. Third place, in corrected time, went to the 52-meter Tamsen, with her motley, 60-person crew! At the end of the day, the crews challenged each other to a cocktail contest, with us journalists as judges. Besides being

August 30 Italy has become a tropical country; we may as well accept it. Shortly after the start of the race, with nearly all the yachts still moored, a storm broke loose in Porto Cervo as sudden as it was violent with gusts of wind over 40 knots and rain pouring down in buckets. There was some trouble with the moorings, a few knocks and bumps among the yacht, but fortunately no real damage. In the calm after the storm, all the vessels put to lead-grey sea under an even more leaden sky but‌ there was no wind. The race was cancelled. Aboard the Helios we were

offered a great lunch to make up for having missed a great sports event. The day ended festively with a gala dinner for owners and guests at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, with music and dancing far into the night.

August 31

A short chat on the wharf with Giancarlo Ragnetti,CEO of Perini Navi Group Why do you hold the Perini Cup? The event was inaugurated in 2004 with the goal of bringing together a good number of our yacht-owners so that they could get to know one another and over the course of the years, it became a competition with competent and aggressive crews who really know how to sail these yacht to their best advantage. The number of yachts signed up shows just how successful this initiative has been, attracting participants as much for the spirit of competition that fills the air during the regatta as for the atmosphere of friendship established between everyone involved, from the yacht owners to the members of the Perini team, from the sponsors to the journalists that come from all over the world to participate in this event. The regatta shows how our great cruising sailboats, each one with its own unique characteristics, are also extraordinary sea-steeds, capable of amazing feats. The Perini Navi Cup, now in its fifth edition, has become a major appointment on the international calendar of ocean-going sailing yacht events and the incredible energy the organizers dedicate to creating it have once again paid off handsomely, as evidenced by this year’s resounding success. Why was the Costa Smeralda chosen as the location for this race? The Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo are among the favorite places of owners of large yachts from all over the world who have been meeting here year after year for a long time. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, moreover, is the perfect partner for organizing sport and social events of international importance such as the Perini Navi Cup. Finally, the location offers a variety of regatta fields which are perfect, both for the wind conditions there and for the splendid natural beauty: an ideal setting for the jewels created by Perini!

Blue skies and calm seas are not very promising, but patience (the sailor’s greatest virtue) pays off and after a couple of postponements, the race is finally launched. Aboard the P2, the yacht I am on, they are fervently preparing for the race. The captain, Jonathan Kline, gives instructions and encouragement to a crew of about 20 members, plus the owner – who never misses a race – and his lovely family. “We need to give it our all and sail twice as fast as our direct opponent… our handicap is high so we have to race against ourselves to show off the P2’s great potential!” Unfortunately some gusts of wind slowed the P2 down and she had to settle for a disappointing 5th place in adjusted time. Silencio wins again and takes the highest position on the podium. Her owner, new to sailboat racing, arrives on the pier full of enthusiasm for the experience and excited about his boat’s result. He expressed his specific intention to participate in further regattas. The final classification sees the Silencio in first place, followed by the P2 and the Parsifal IV. Due to a series of factors which would be too difficult to explain here in just a few lines, the results were particularly disappointing for the Seahawk, a flaming, 60-meter, freshly launched vessel, as well as for Nauta’s elegant, 30-meter, carbon-fiber Xnoi. At some distance from the frontrunners, the Maltese Falcon came in, although she had dominated the Perini Cup in 2006, 2009 and 2011.

America’s Cup

"Hey guy, what do you have there? The Luna Rossa spinnaker polef?" An old cyclist, once racer, now repairman of bicycles, asked me this one morning a few years ago. I was coming out home on the bike and I carried an aluminum tube that resembled a pole with me. It was in the year 2000 and Luna Rossa challenged Paul Cayard at first and then New Zealand in the Hauraki Gulf in Auckland. At night the RAI broadcast the regattas, taking away the sleep and forcing us to stay awake at times until the first light of dawn. It is strange because despite being a rather boring show, with postponed departures for hours due to the wind absence, many people remained glued to the television. It was such a powerful event, from the point of view of the media, which resembled the Rischiatutto of Mike Bongiorno, when in the Italian cinemas on Thursday night it was necessary to project the TV program first, otherwise the viewers would have no longer filled the cinema to watch a film. It seems as if centuries have passed from then. The America's Cup has just ended, but no one noticed it. Very few teams in the race, regattas that didn’t excite even the close relatives of the crew and no television that transmits the live broadcast. They could not even sell the rights , because no one wanted them. No one was willing to spend on an event destined to fail. How was that possible? It took only two editions to break the toy. In Valencia, during the 33th edition, they have

46

BARCHE ottobre 2013

spent more time in court than in water. The contenders were two billionaires: Larry Ellison and Ernesto Bertarelli. The verdict of the race sealed the victory of Ellison and then they started with the catamarans imagined by Russell Coutts , the most famous America's Cup helmsman. It was supposed to be a guarantee, but things turned out differently. Ellison promised at least 16 teams, but when they got in the water there were only two: New Zealand and Luna Rossa. In late July, Artemis was added. The Louis Vuitton Cup was also stained with blood with the tragic capsizing that took the life of Andrew Simpson from the Swedish team. Only then it was thought to fix a maximum level of wind, beyond which they would not have carried out the races. The catamarans were too fast, too hard to handle and too dangerous. But the AC72 are still fragile and complicated boats. Coutts decided that there would have been the rigid wing in place of the mainsail and so it was. The teams went crazy just to put it in the hangar at the end of the event. It's not easy moving a wing of 40 meters. It is probably also very expensive. The Louis Vuitton final between New Zealand and Luna Rossa finished with a tennis score in favor of New Zealand and the races were won only for the breaks of the other competitor. Too much technology on board, too much electronics, all too delicate for a multi-hull that glides over the water at 70 miles per hour. Coutts has deleted the spirit of the Cup. The match race of which he is master, is made up of sailors who compete in prestart with spectacular rotations and gybes. The match racing has always excited us for extremely harmonious teams, able to maneuver in a fraction of a second, for the tens of turns on the edge upwind performed by those who were behind, for the almost simultaneously buoy passages with lifts of spinnaker and hauling down of genoa. The super-technological and fragile as crystal AC 72 made us forget all this. Hopefully the whims of Scrooge McDuck will give way to common sense. The next edition must be cheaper if you want greater participation. And above all it must be done on boats where the skill of sailors and helmsmen can still be decisive for the victory. In short, give us back an America's Cup with a human face and not a hyper technological toy! For that there are already videogames. At the press time of this issue, Emirates Team New Zealand has started the final of the America's Cup in a great way winning clearly the first four races competing with a wind over 15 knots. James Spithill, the Australian who steers Oracle, could not resist Dean Barker. Below, Luna Rossa clearly beaten by Emirates Team New Zealand.

The Italian flag waves

Italy wins with Matteo Nicolini and Tomaso Polli who grasp the first place at the XCat Grand Prix of Arona on Maggiore Lake

A clear victory, achieved never giving up on opponents and maintaining high concentration even when it was not easy to do so. It is a result that reverses the previsions of the European Grand Prix, the fifth stage of the UIM Skydive Dubai XCat World Series. The race started immediately with the utmost excitement. The weather conditions had said cloudy but it was an annoying wind with a speed of

48

BARCHE October 2013

7-8 knots that mostly disturbed the catamarans launched at 200 km / h on the fastest circuit of the championship. After the green flag and the time to reach the first buoy, the boat number 22, Consul Brokers by Alfredo Amato and Marco Pennesi, lifted itself on the bow landing upside down on the water. Fortunately, the two pilots came out immediately from the windscreen, angry but unhurt. Second starting procedure, second green flag,

and the same thing happened to Victory 33: the high speed and the wind brought Salem Al Adidi and Talib Al Sayed to turn around, with an almost identical dynamics. Also in this case there was no consequence for the two sailors. After the third flag, all on the first buoy with Qatar 94 followed by Six by Nicolini and Polli. The reigning champions and world leaders of Fazza 3, the veterans Arif Al Zaffain and Mohammed Al Marri, had a technical problem and they arrived at the penultimate position, to recover only in the final laps when the good result had already vanished. Skydive Dubai was just behind our boat. Thus a long duel between the top three began, with the Italians also regained a second a lap on the Qatari. Until they were really these latter, under pressure, to make a mistake on a buoy and leave free water to the opponents. At the end Matteo Nicolini and

Tomaso Polli were the first to arrive at the finishing line, followed by Skydive Dubai and Mouawad50. The weekend of Arona proved to be a success also from the point of view of organization and tourism: on

the shores of Maggiore Lake there were over 40 thousand spectators ready to get excited about the stages of the race, to applaud the winners, and to sing the hymn of Mameli at the foot of the podium.

Boats

A partnership with ASDEC, the

Association of Old Boats, with the aim of supporting the spread of culture and the preservation of a fundamental heritage for the history of boating Photos by Leonardo Petroli

Loving boats The ASDEC was born from the need to do something to save old boats; it is in all respects an important cultural operation in order to preserve the nautical traditions. At the basis of ASDEC philosophy there is the passion to possess, but above all to keep antiques in general. In fact, often those with a vintage boat have also a vin-

52

BARCHE October 2013

tage car and maybe even a small or large collection of old clocks. The central moments of the association are the gatherings of motorboats and the racings of vintage boats. The first meeting was organized in Bocca di Magra in Liguria at the end of the '80s. The first vintage sailing regatta took place in 1992 on Lake Como in Gravedona. The ASDEC meetings aim at bringing owners together united by a common passion. During the meeting, in addition to beautiful sailings on lakes or lagoons, competitions of regularity or seamanship are also organized, but never of speed because this will destroy the historic boats. But ASDEC real goal was and is to reward the “true

vintage boat” through a “Certification” with a final score; some guidelines have been established in an evaluation board. This assessment, made by our experts, makes the analysis of a large number of objective factors about the quality of the boat. It is not assumable that the oldest boat should necessarily be the “more vintage”. It has been done in a way so that the interest of the owners who wanted to take over a cup or recognition, was stimulated to improve the certification score by maintaining their vintage boat in the most correct way, thus contributing to what it was and still is the aim of ASDEC: saving traditional boats and their history. The Historic Nautical Register keeps on increasing by

classifying more and more vintage boats according to ASDEC certification where the real passion of the owner is awarded, considering the quantity and quality of the material presented on the history of the boat: some ship owners, for example, make beautiful reports to which they devote time and energy; some of them are so beautiful and written with the heart that they have also earned the publication. Also the past of the boat, its importance and whether it belonged to someone famous, are other factors to be considered. Also the originality of all the technical and architectural aspects and the state of preservation. 25 years of seniority is the limit for boasting the title of vintage boat. This is

always born from the desire to save as many vintage boats as possible. Unfortunately in fact, around 20 years of seniority, a vessel arrives at its lowest point of assessment and therefore it is the point where there is a greater possibility that these boats will be destroyed, as for example the old taxi of Milan or the old Venetian gondola. By establishing the border in 25 years to capture the value of seniority, they hope to convince the ship owners to hold on for another 5 years until it can finally be considered "a vintage boat." ASDEC has about 150 members and a registry of 170 boats. The headquarter is in Milan and its Chairman is Gianalberto Zanoletti. www.asdec.it

Many of the solutions aboard Ocean Paradise have been developed by the yard’s designers and technicians, based on specific requests by the owner – a dynamic young businessman from Singapore, interested in designwho was closely involved in the design and construction

phases. He has also specifically asked for minimalist surroundings, but never cold and always connected with the sea. On the lower deck there are four guest cabins with access from a central hall connected to the main deck foyer. Each cabin has its own spacious bathroom and a view

of the sea is guaranteed by ample portholes. The owner’s suite is located on the forward portion of the main deck and stretches the full width of the yacht. This is a privileged environment, both in size and position, and also for aspects such as the side balcony usable also during navigation.

years for the pleasure of all those who love the sea and elegance without compromise. They will become a real style and the new 62Steel is a clear example of that». «This collaboration is both a great honor and a huge challenge - said Mauro Micheli and it has become true because Sanlorenzo has always put the design and aesthetics as primary value».

Now Sanlorenzo has a range of 14 models divided into three different categories of boats: the SL line of fiberglass motoryachts from 62 up to 118 feet (8 models: SL62, SL72, SL82, SL94, SL104, SL108 and SL118); the SD line which includes fiber-glass yachts with semi displacement hull from 92 up to 122 feet (3 models: SD92, SD110 and SD122); and the super-yachts steel line, which starts from yachts of 40 meters, now available in three models: 40 Alloy, 42 Explorer and 46 Steel.

Rio Yachts

The Lombard yard has always believed in the Genoa boat show. It has showcased 52 editions out of 53. One only excused absence in 1960, when

Rio did not exist yet The shipyard will carry two symbol models of its collection, two different ways of living the sea. The Espera 34, which is the 50th anniversary boat, and the Colorado 54, which will be exhibited with new colors, materials and finishes.

It is also powered with lighter and advanced engines, equipped with pod transmissions that allow a top speed of 35 knots and a cruising speed consumption of less then 150 l/h. In harbour it also has got a good maneuverability thanks to the Axius joystick and electronic anchor.

This new model is characterised by the curved tempered glass door with mirror finish, set between the cockpit and the helm station. The Espera 34 is a 10 meter open boat. Despite being the new entry level on the range it is the icon of the new course perfectly combining the past

and the future of Rio Yachts. The name is the same as the first wood vessel built in 1961, and forges a path for the new ESPERA line: truly open boats with strong lines. With its 10 meters in length it is proposed for both novice shipowners as well as those more experienced and

demanding. From stern to bow there is a large cockpit which can be turned from simple seats into a sunbathing or relaxation area, or into a dining area with kitchenette. Below deck there is a bathroom, a “C” shape convertible dinette and small double bed.

Wider 122

After the 150 'under construction in the Castelvecchio yard of Tilli Antonelli, there is a new 37 meters of great charm, made of aluminum and equipped with a diesel-electric system The Wider 122’ has an elegant and timeless style. It is designed by Fulvio De Simoni and it is characterised by clean lines and taut and smooth surfaces. The aesthetic balance of the lines reflects the overall project, which expresses the harmony between the ship and the sea, both for

comfort on board and environmental impact. The propulsion is the heart of the Wider 122 project, as well as of the Wider 150' which gave the start of production of the first unit. Infact, focusing on the use of a diesel / electric modular propulsion system, this yacht embodies the con-

cept of energy saving: just with the electric engines powered by batteries you can reach a range of about 8 hours with all the utilities on board switched on and 50 nautical miles. Instead if the electric engines are powered by the diesel group, you will get three more different speeds and range.

Sergio Sarri

>

Saturday, July 27th there was the inauguration of the exhibition of Sergio Sarri’s works at the Yacht Club DC of Mirco Dellapasqua, in the marina MARINERA of Marina di Ravenna, which has organized exhibitions of important artists such as Gabriella Benedini, Tommaso Cascella, Umberto Mariani, Tino Stefanoni, Keith Haring, Marco Blacks, MIND, Bruno Ceccobelli over the years. The historical archives of the artist Sergio Sarri is held by Cristiano Ragni of Forlì, as well as by Germanà and MIND.

“I

n '64 , during my trip to New York, I discovered acrylic colors: since then I have never looked back, I

have only used those. I remember I had two suitcases full of clothes and items for my trip: without thinking too much I emptied both, filling them with colors to bring back to Italy, where they arrived only two years later.” Sergio Sarri from Turin, born in 1938, in the early sixties he took a trip which lasted two years and opened him the doors of Europe, with Bern and Paris where he attended painting classes, by then going overseas. The trip to the States is for him the discovery of a new world, of something wonderful and awesome that our Peninsula would know only long after: the future. “It all started from there, I came to this strange world where my approach to reality had to be completely different from what I had used before that time. There were technologies of which I had no knowledge, machines and equipment I had never seen. Also New York was experiencing the explosion of pop art in those years: my art, in fact, comes from there. Until then I had painted, but in a confused way... dur-

ing my journey I realized I had to start painting what happened, the new that was moving forward.” And so the adventure begins with an exhibition of his works in Rome and L’Aquila, in events that present the new generations of artists, passing through Saint Paul de Vence, where he presented the triptych The Adventures of None, then coming to the important Florentine event in 1972. Here, at the Sangallo Gallery, he exhibited in a collective with Alinari, Ghelli, Adami, Matta and Vasarely. In the same year he exhibited in Bologna with a personal and in Milan, in the exhibition The metamorphosis of the object, which include the works of artists such as Balla, De Chirico, Rotella, Magritte, Dalì and Warhol. And then Amsterdam, Paris, New York, in a crescendo that flows into an international success. Enthusiast and strong connoisseur of cinema, in 1968, he engaged himself in the production of experimental and provocative films (Upup and away, The stories of Varazze, The Adventures of None, Vostock) and from the same passion his comics productions aroused, focusing precisely on movie characters, published on international journals and signed with the pseudonym SeSar. He was Professor of Artistic Anatomy at the Brera Academy in Milan. He currently lives in Calice Ligure, in the province of Savona. How would you describe the relationship between man and machine, and with technology, focus and logical thread of your entire production? I represent the relationship between human - that I have often called inhuman - and machines as a symbol of division, then moving to the representation of the relationship between man and artificial in general. Even the human being loses his human-

Sarri's works can be found in numerous private and public collections including the Municipal Museum of Saint Paul de Venice, Stedelick Grafik Museum in Amsterdam, the Collection G. Fall in Paris, the collection Ramazzotti in Milan, the Mont Serrat Collection in New York, the Buffalo Art, the Museum of Modern Art in Grenoble, the Kunst cabinet in Hagen, the drawings Fund of the Brera Academy, the Museum of the Italian Art in Pieve di Cento.

ity in my paintings: he is always seen through photos, cinema and television, he is himself artificial. Who looks at the painting must grasp its essence and reach his own conclusions. The painting is an object to look at, which should mainly attract for its aesthetic charm, by fostering a feeling of harmony or shock, depending on whom is looking at it. From whom do you feel influenced from an artistic point of view? From Giotto onwards, all the painters have influenced me. The artist is a drop in the vast sea of art, that makes the search for new solutions go forward and new ways for people to express themselves through painting. Which search did the movies produced in 1968 express? My films wanted mostly to provoke, they were an expression of the free cinema of those years, when they realized everything but the film. They were used to attract people to meetings and conferences that proliferated in that year. These films were without sound, without a true story, without unnecessary superstructure, where the fascination of the image exceeded the narrative. David Lynch is the one who has raised this way of making movies. Is your artistic work the bearer of a moral message? I will not give a review of what I represent, and I never wanted to do it. “Machines are now part of our life, of our everyday lives, this is now the world where we live. The real objectiveness is constantly manipulated by the media reality. Mine is an acceptable pessimism... maybe because artificial means will save us.

Side door with a pantograph opening upward This is the Besenzoni’s proposal to leave space to the walkway on the boat deck. The opening upward is the ideal solution for boats where the design of the deck does not allow for wide wales: when it is open, the door provides access without obstacle; at the same time when it is closed it is almost invisible on the surface of the flank. The size and features vary according to the specific requirements of the shipyard (it is a customized product). Suitable for boats from 30 meters long, it includes as an optional a sensor that signals the opening / closing of the door, a very useful item when you are aboard a large yacht. The electro-hydraulic handling is done automatically by a built-in push-button integrated in the wall of the cabin, the handling arms are made of stainless steel, while the aluminum frame with side automatic pawls is mounted on a frame seal holder which makes the tool resistant to attrition. www.besenzoni.it

In addition, the Ultra communicates directly via MasterBus with the Mastervolt battery charger, ensuring the best recharging capability. It also offers savings of up to 70% in space and weight compared to lead-acid batteries, making its installation on board easy. positioning of the sail to favor the shading of the open areas. The structure includes three poles at least, designed and engineered by OPAC’s technical staff, which present inside one or two sliding mechanisms where one end of the fabric of the awning canopy will be hooked up. The three proposed solutions are: 1.Manual: manual release and incline on each support pole using manual actuators. 2.Semi-automatic: the posts contain inside an electrical device moved by a remote control; the slope of the canvas is adjusted by pressing the guide buttons on each pole. 3. Automatic (scheduled for summer 2014), the system is composed of an automatic

mechanism controlled by an electronic control unit interfaced with solar trackers. It will allow the orientation of the canvas following both the positioning of the boat in relation to the sun, and, during the day, the position of the sun to its Azimut so as to favor the shading of the area below the awning. The electronic logic allows to manage the ascent and descent of the ends of the fabric on the support poles in an independent manner according to the orientation of the sun or, in the case of an anchored boat, when the boat is moved by the wave motion. In both cases the automatic directionality of the "sail" guarantees the constant ideal shading. www.opacgroup.com

Maneuvering joystick The maneuvering joystick JCS PLUS is pull alongside wireless remote controls for mooring Yacht Controller Dual Band and Smart, with which it can be integrated. The joystick allows, with just the movement of the hand, the simultaneous operation of engines and fore or aft propellers, letting you maneuver the boat in any direction with precision and in total relaxation. There are two modes of use. In the automatic one, engines and screws will be operated together to facilitate even the less experienced sailors the mooring maneuvers. In the manual mode, you can activate both the screws and both the two motors simultaneously or separately. Thanks to the JCS Plus panel, embossed with a design of the boat, it is possible to understand which functions are activated during maneuvers. As an optional, there is the SSS (Secure Sail System) system, which allows the recovery of the anchor when weighing the anchor, until the last 3 feet of chain, at standard speed and for then slowing down gradually until the complete recovery of the anchor. info@yachtcontroller.it

A tailor-made map Navico has enhanced the system for the realization of customized maps, which now provides new levels of cartography by Francesco Mauri

Insight Genesis is a tool that provides boaters with the ability to create tailored maps of favorite fishing and navigation areas. Both in the case of mapping previously uncharted waters and in the case of adding new details and particulars to the existing maps with a wide range of simple and intuitive nuances of depth, compositions of the sea bottoms and layers of vegetation overlapping to high resolution profiles and deeply plumbed depths. Data can be recorded and saved in the course of multiple boat trips, allowing to create a map along time, thus increasing the level of detail and quality. The system 100

A great history He has designed unique boats, which have been published in magazines the world over, admired and, even, copied. The Italian designer is the author of all the boats of the shipyard in the Marche since its opening Written by Francesco Michienzi, portraits by Maurizio Paradisi, Pershing-Ferretti Spa archives

P

assionate and unconventional, known for creating boats which have left an indelible mark on world nauti-

cal history, Fulvio De Simoni – born in La Spezia but living in Milan – acquired his first boat at age of 14. He later turned his passion into a job with initial important projects in sailboats before he moved on to motor yachts. His true career began in 1972 in Milan at Alberto Marcati’s studio. He has been the sole owner of Italprojects in Milan since 1983 specialising in developing projects in the field of hi-tech industrial shipping. To date he has put almost 3000 boats in the water. You have more than 40 years experience in the nautical world, many of which have been with Pershing. This year you’re celebrating 30 years of partnership and almost 2000 boats under this brand name alone. How did it all start? Tilli Antonelli and Fausto Filippetti, who worked in a boat yard which I’d made a few boats for, set up on their own and asked me to design some boats for them which were to be their company’s debut. They were around 45 foot long which felt to us like the right size to appeal to a good number of buyers. How did this type of boat develop? In a slightly different way to what is

believed: we conceived a boat which was to be probably made in two forms ( open and closed). It was the former which was made first and it was an instant success grabbing the attention of a really large number of clients. Can we say that the DNA of that boat is still there in today’s boats? Yes, partly, because we’ve always tried to make innovative boats and that one was strikingly so. At that time, there were no open 45-foot boats with three cabins and three bathrooms, a central engine which could be navigated quite quickly with limited power. It was suitable for a wide range of people: young families with money and larger families because it had slightly more inside space than was usual at that time. The result was that for several years we created many boats with these characteristics without ever equalling, however, the success of Pershing 45’. Being innovative has meant that many rival boatyards, particularly foreign ones, have taken specific elements from your designs and made them their own. Are you pleased about that? On one hand, undoubtedly, but on the other hand, I’m sad to note that once you could recognise a Pershing at sea from a long way off and now you can’t. Over the last 30 years, the nautical world has changed a lot and Pershing is an example. We have to remember that only 10 years ago the boatyard’s flagship was an 88-foot boat and now there are 115-foot boats or bigger, on the drawing board. What do you see as the most significant element in this transformation? For me it’s not a question of design but the fact that, over the last few years, engines have become more and more powerful as if the problem of consumption – and thus of cost – were secondary. It has been almost a matter of competing to make boats with ever lighter but more powerful engines.

BARCHE October 2013

As far as the rest is concerned there has obviously been a need to create new shapes because they are taken up by the market more quickly and the boat which sells best in any boatyard is always the latest model whatever the quality. In this field people are always looking for something new. What have been the distinguishing features of the boats of the time and what are they today? One by one certain standards have been thrown out and others taken on board. A distinctive feature from the beginning was the arched shape of the side panel which was used for the first time by Pershing 70’ a great many years ago and which I think has influenced the nautical world a great deal. For years no o p e n b o a t s

came out of the boatyards which were without this distinguishing characteristic. If I’m not mistaken the 70’ had another important innovative characteristic: it was a turbine yacht. We can certainly say that we made a model of this boat with a turbine which was quite unusual at the time for that size of yacht, in fact it didn’t exist at all. It also had a single central engine while another governed two stern drivers which were totally extractable for getting out of ports and manoeuvering while the turbine was only used for getting up to high speed. It could navigate at more than 50/55 knots which was an incredible performance in those days. The shape of the boats you design is closely linked to function. That’s right. I’ve never simply designed the style of a boat. I’ve always thought of the boat as a whole because inside and outside are inseparably linked: for example, portholes and windscreens can’t just be put in anywhere but there are a number of interrelated situations. Until ten or so years ago there was no need to create all the space that’s required today and this is something which penalises the technical aspect a little. Yes and it’s a problem. I think that this search for ever greater space should be limited because it leads to a homogenized market. If we think of cars there are 8, 6 and 4 seater vehicles and even 2 seaters which might all be the same length. In boating, there’s a tendency to think that boats with a certain size have to have certain elements and characteristics so that even the latest Pershing boats are very big. I’d like to go back to the original spirit of the shipyard with more sporty looking boats even though as far as performance is concerned the brand has always remained at the top.

In 1972 Fulvio De Simoni began his career in Milan at Alberto Marcati’s studio.

In 1983, in the same city, he set up Italproject, a

company specializing in the development of high technical projects in the industrial nautical field. A real enthusiast, he has always fought the approval:

his conformist spirit and unwillingness to compromise is reflected in his projects.

In these images, Fulvio De Simoni interviewed by the Director of BARCHE Francesco Michienzi in the Pershing shipyard in Mondolfo (PU).

Fulvio De Simoni 30 years with Pershing Pershing is synonymous with speed. There’s something dynamic even about the name and the brand was born with this spirit together with a highly technological connotation. Has this principle been maintained over time? I would say that it has. Pershing’s products are recognizably high quality and high performance although this is not absolute of course. There are lighter motorboats which, however, only offer speed. Pershing’s most important must is speed with the greatest possible comfort. If you had to think of a further evolution of your way of designing, what type of boat would emerge? To tell the truth we’re studying an innovation in the style of high performance boats which will be a surprise and a further step forward for Pershing as far as recognisability is concerned so that those who copy us won’t be able to deny that it was our idea. In your career there’s a model which could be considered an icon, the 88’, which was on the front covers of nautical magazines the world over. It is one of very few products which can be considered “ a collector’s item”. That’s right. There was even an owner who really wanted one but as it was no longer being produced he bought a used one to put with his Ferraris and the most attractive Italian designs. I remember too that when I left the Festival de La Plaisance of Cannes port in this boat , which no one had yet seen, there was a round of applause from the various competitors because it was truly different from all the others and it was in silver which was new at

Pershing The Yard designs, produces and markets luxury open motor yachts. The products are characterized by high performances , constant styling research, use of the finest quality materials and interior design aimed at high levels of comfort. The methods of construction, the engines able to reach 12,000 hp and the use of surface propellers, hydro jets and gas turbines make these yachts really sporty and able to reach a top speed of 55 knots. The history of this brand came from the idea of three friends who were boating enthusiasts: in 1981 Tilli Antoneli, Fausto Filippetti and Giuliano Onori set up the Cantieri Navali dell’Adriatico and launched the first boat. Two years later, in 1983, they met Fulvio De Simoni, and the Pershing idea was born. So the first 45’, a great successful open boat , which was the first to offer a new way to experience comfort and privacy, until then an

exclusive prerogative of the classic motor yacht, was designed. In the early 90s began a policy of internationalization towards Mediterranean countries, the United States and the Far East. In 1998 the company became part of the Ferretti Group. The boats are manufactured in the Mondolfo plant (located just in front of the first historic site), a futuristic area of 55,000 square meters – of which more than 38,400 square meters are outdoors - designed by Sandro Sartini. The production site has a spray booth of 440 square meters where the boats are dry painted. The tank test (33 m long, 7.50 wide and 2.30 meters deep) is used for all hydraulic (engines, exhausts, bilges and generators) and waterproofing tests of the yacht. The travel-lift, which has a capacity of 130 tons, completes the tasks with hauling and launching into the tank.

«The sea is a test that continuously subjects you to new challenges. Suffice it to say that any change that is made to the weights of a boat should also provide a similar change at the hull and the underline volumes, because there isn’t a hull that can navigate alone without the right weights; and there isn’t a boat with the right weights that can navigate well without a good hull. A lot of owners don’t know these technical details, I know people who after a boat test, have changed their mind about the surface propellers or other items. A sea trial shows the quality of a product because you can’t face the sea superficially». Fulvio De Simoni

«The Pershing 115 is a yacht of 150 tons and , with some engines, it can reach 55 knots, which is a very unusual performance for this type of boat. Behind such a result, are dozens and dozens of plans. You must study every single detail to ensure that, at over 50 knots, there are no crunches or any kind of movement of objects».

«In the Pershing 108 the architecture, the design and the volumes confirm the great care given to the project to make this model a benchmark in the nautical world. For the first time an incredibly spacious sun deck with a retractable steering console has been fitted as standard on a Pershing».

the time. This generation’s open all derive from that boat a little I think. What is the main characteristic of the new 62’ which has just been launched? This boat is part of the evolution of the last 2/3 years. We’ve simply tried to start reducing the size compared to the 64’ and it’s a bit lower and a bit wider. It puts the finishing touches to the most recent styles and could, perhaps, be the last with this particular style. None of the brand’s boats are completely open. Why? Pershing was created as a profoundly Italian and Mediterranean boat. To think that there are really a great many seas and situations which are similar to the Mediterranean where completely open boats can be successful is perhaps presumptuous. Until the market starts up again I think that a completely open boat will not sell well. What does excellence mean? Knowing with absolute certainty that we are a reference point for this range of boats. Obviously excellence means building quality of the yard. What do you love most about this job? It allows you to see your ideas come to fruition in relatively short time frames, particularly if you compare it to other

sectors. I’ve heard about a 180 metre boat made in 28 months. Making a boat of this type and seeing it in the water in such a short time is a great satisfaction from a planning and intellectual point of view. In the past it took decades to build a castle and those who designed it didn’t survive to see it finished... Do you look after all the details of the boat personally? I do everything that Pershing allows me to, in the sense that this shipyard is part of a large industrial group which has top level professionals working in it and it’s right that each of them should work in the field in which they excel. What I like to see is that the final result corresponds to my expectations.

Below, Fulvio De Simoni photographed in front of the model of the new Pershing 62 ', the novelty of the yard which was presented at the Cannes Boat Show in September. The boat is equipped with Rolla surface propellers and Searex transmissions. On the lefthand page, images of some of the most significant Pershing.

De Simoni’s point of view about the Pershing 62’ «We have opted for a deep-V hull with features which allow, even a boat of this size and of this weight, to have remarkably soft performances on waves. Compared to a 62 'of ten years ago there is at least a 10% increase in volume even if it is a rough calculation, because platforms and other aspects that affect the comparison have come into play».

et us give you a glimpse of an elegant yacht of rare beauty,

born from a dream shared by a pair of yachting enthusiasts and brought to fruition through the efforts of the team of collaborators. Royal Huisman, the ship builders chosen to make this long-held dream come true, is an internationally recognized icon for the construction of large sailing yachts, both ultramodern and classic. The pristine boatyard in Vollenhove has produced a number of famous yacht in the last few years, including Twizzle and Gliss, and gigantic sailing yachts like the 90-meter Athena, to name a few. We could list dozens of prestigious yachts designed by the yard’s resident naval architect, Gerry Dijkstra, but we will stick with one that represents the epitome of his visionary work:

the Maltese Falcon. Built by Perini, the Maltese Falcon is still considered the apotheosis of yacht design of the 21st century. We conclude this cavalcade of figures involved in the creation of Pumula with a pair of extremely talented interior designers, Jonathan Rhoades and Dick Young, internationally renowned and applauded for the elegance of their signature sailing and motor yachts (we highly recommend taking a look at their website: www.rhoadesyoung.com). The first request the designers got from the future owners was to create a yacht that evoked strong emotions, communicating the romantic notion of voyages to faraway places, while at the same time, being constructed according to state-of-the-art standards. Dijkstra is not new to such endeavors, having already designed an exquisite reinterpretation of J Class yachts, but this time the goal was to match a by-gone atmosphere

with modern functionality. The result is an elegant cutter over 37 meters long, characterized by a sleek, dynamic silhouette with sharp bow and counter stern. Beneath her classic sailing yacht appearance, Pumula has an Alustar light aluminum alloy hull and a carbon fiber mast, 48 meters tall, produced by Rondal. Her captain, Michael van Bregt, stresses that each aspect of her design has been created with the utmost attention to finding a happy balance between functionality and esthetics. If, on the one hand, a bit of headroom was sacrificed in the engine room, no compromises were made with regards to installing state-of-the-art electronic instrumentation and on-deck hardware and equipment designed to guarantee top sailing performance. Pumula was born to take on rough seas like those that surround the Spitsbergen Islands, destination of her maiden voyage, and everything has to work perfectly to ensure a safe and comfortable journey. As we know, the process of creating a yacht from the drafting board till she puts out to sea takes years, and often over the course of this time, significant modifications can be imposed. In the case of Pumula, there is a funny

story about her name. The original name of the project was “bugamena,” a Zulu word indicating something big (both materially and morally). When they realized how small the yacht was compared to the ocean she would be sailing, the owners, like “real sailors,” opted for the name Pumula, which in Zulu means peace and rest. The choice of a name reflecting Zulu tradition is not an affectation but comes from the strong ties the owners, a lovely European couple, have with the country of South Africa. Although her exterior lines are sleek for fast sailing, Pumula’s interiors are permeated with an atmosphere of peace and serenity, as the name suggests. The super modern equipment on deck by Rondal, cleverly inserted into a classical context, allows the boat to be handled easily even by only two people, no matter what kind of wind or weather conditions she is faced with. The retractable keel allows draft to vary from 5m to a mere 3m for access to shoal draft anchorages. The two large multifunction monitors – for navigating, plotting, engine control, etc. – disappear into compartments when not in use. Even though there is even a camera perched on top of the mast to check the trim when the mainsail is not visible from the helm, Pumu-

Very accurate details The furniture has rounded edges, as it should on board on a sailing yacht where we must be able to move smoothly and safely even when the sea is rough or the boat is sliding. A team of experienced craftsmen is able to perform any artifact, from large deckhouse to the smallest ornamental details.

Two people to maneuver To be faithful to the classical schemes, Pumula is equipped with a single central steering wheel with a diameter of 1.20 m, with a good view over the deck, and all the instruments are fitted in the blanket to keep the clean style of the helm station almost unchanged.

la is and intends to remain a yacht in which, beyond the state-of-the-art technology and electronic devices, the skill and sensitivity of the crew is considered of the utmost importance. Speaking of the crew, we should mention how much thought was put into creating the crew cabins, located in the prow. A few steps lower than the small, lowerdeck saloon, it houses a starboard crew mess, followed by two lovely cabins, one of which is a double for the captain and his wife, Charlotte, who is serves as chef, stewardess and is also a licensed captain herself. On the owner’s insistence, no distinction has been made between the areas for passengers and crew, who thus share life onboard with no formalities. I have to say, this is a yacht owner with real class! The interior layout, also in view of this choice to favor crewpassenger cohabitation, is extremely linear and makes the best possible use of all the available space. Her waterline length is 27.4 meters and to keep her lines sleek, Pumula has a low freeboard and the hull itself has a very sleek waterline to guarantee optimum performance. “Our challenge was to intePumula is a grate the required accommodations into the confines of a sailing yacht limited volume of space,” dice designed for long Jonathan Rhoades. “The ocean voyages. shared living spaces are cozy and comfortable. Indoor and outdoor areas, in contrast to the tendency in modern yacht design to integrate them, are distinctly separated, in line . with traditional designs. Light pours into the dining from the deckhouse windows, but if you go down just a few steps, the natural light comes in through charming oval portlights. The interiors are cozy and intimate, with rooms that seem to gather you in a warm embrace. The furniture, designed by the able hands of Jonathan Rhoades and Dick Young, reflects a distinctly nautical style. Simple yet elegant, there is an abundance of wood, pastel-shaded fabrics and sophisticated and finely-crafted details such as the leather-clad night tables reminiscent of antique steamer trunks. The main saloon takes up the entire area of a classically designed deckhouse with slightly curved windows, with a bright dining area dominated by a large, solid oak dining table and a chart table that when necessary can double as a breakfast nook, fitted with navigational and communication instruments. Instead of the usual mahogany, both the furniture and the wide floorboards are made of oak which has been waxed and treated to give it an antique look. For the floor, the boards chosen were particularly knotted and veined, easier to make look “worn.”

Royal Huisman Pumula “It wasn’t a simple procedure,” explains Jonathan Rhoades. “We only managed to come up with this “aging” solution by much trial and error. We tried wood stains and tea, honey to fill in the grooves, and finally found success with beeswax. We ended up with a warm hue, with different nuances for the furniture and the floor, and smooth, nicefeeling surfaces and non-skid floors (all the carpentry work was carried out by expert artisans in the boatyard workshops).” Heading below to the lower deck, we find ourselves in a sweet little sitting room that leads to a large cabin and to the galley which, if necessary, can be directly connected to the lounge area by opening a sliding door over the portside wet bar. Facilitating getting in and out of the water or boarding the tender is a starboard hatch accessible from the deck by means of a carbon fiber ladder. This simple and functional solution, created with both intelligence and style, is another indication of how luxury aboard Pumula is a question of quality and not ostentation: nothing is any more complicated than what is strictly necessary, automation has been limited to serving a few maneuvers to handle the massive sails (the total area of the sails is 748 sq m), the jib furler and mainsail, and to regulate the stays and shrouds. The quality of this yacht is evident in every phase of its realization, from the drawing board to the water, by way of meticulous construction, fine materials and excellent workmanship. Thanks to the skill and knowledge of her creators, Pumula is not an imitation of a vintage yacht: she is a splendid contemporary classic.

uch artistry has never before been heard and shall never again be equaled… He brought his fin-

But like the Venetian composer’s marvelous Four Seasons, each of the four interiors is unique and designed to delight any kind of yacht owner. Two of the interpretations, “Dolcevita” and “Firenze,” recall classic designs, while the other two, “Portofino” and “Riviera,” are more contemporary. The Azimut 80 is the first vessel over 72 feet long to be entirely designed in Avigliana. As a CE category “A,” she was built to handle all sorts of weather. She is reminiscent of other large vessels recently designed externally by Stefano Righini, with interiors, as we said, by Achille Salvagni. The use of precious materials, like marble in the bathrooms and antiqued grey oak alternating with very dark wood and lacquered details on the skylights and windows, gives the rooms a refined, elegant air. Salvagni has a natural talent for involving the senses and including tactile perception. We have always admired the emphasis he places on the relationship

It is a place that stirs deep emotions, and knowing how to enhance these emotions is indeed a gift. Just like Vivaldi did with his Four Seasons. The amplitude of the master cabin and lavish bath, along with the ingenious positioning of the windows, providing abundant daylight and an unbeatable view, are surely among the highlights of the vessel. The five vertical windows mean the walls are virtually all glass for a “full immersion” effect. All the cabins are outfitted with portholes that open to let in plenty of fresh air. The starboard cabin holds twin beds and a third Murphy bed, lots of storage space and a bathroom with separate shower, while the portside cabin holds a queen-sized bed. There’s no shortage of large windows and openable portholes belowdecks. The picture windows in the VIP cabin, located forward, are situated laterally, with the head of the queen-sized bed in the center, positioned towards the bow. tribute to making the spaces seem even roomier than they actually are. The layout of the main deck was designed to enhance the livability of the space by exploiting the use of light as a primary feature. The cockpit, with its teak walkways, sports a large sofa, aft, and a dining table that seats eight. Very impressive are the two full-length (1.6 x 2 m) windows which provide the dining area with loads of natural light and breathtaking views. The galley, equipped with Miele brand appliances, is available in two versions, separate or contiguous. In either case, it is accessible both from indoors and out, allowing the maximum independence between the crew and the passengers. The main deck also conveniently offers a toilet. The foredeck is divided into a sundeck which comfortably holds four people and a C-shaped sofa with additional storage space, just fore of the windscreen. The moment has arrived to rev up her motors and head out from the Varazze Marina. The twin 1800HP Man V12 common rail motors have exceptionally high torque which makes all the difference when dealing with something so massive: already at only 1,500 rpm she rises out of the water, by working a bit with the trim tabs, and at full

throttle her acceleration is on par with smaller and sleeker boats. At just under 2,200 rpm the second turbines kick in. You can’t help but notice them, not only because of the whistle emanating from the engine room, but in particular from the immediate sensation of thrust as she accelerates through the water. Naturally consumption is affected by displacement and performance, but a quick calculation reveals that she can go 220 nautical miles before refueling, if kept at a cruising speed of 26 knots, which is certainly not slow for a 24-meter yacht. Her fuel tank holds 6,000 liters while the fresh-water tank has an 1,100-liter capacity. Whether she took the waves head on, laterally or from behind, her running attitude remained so steady that even her wake stayed straight and linear and not even a drop of spray reached the fly. Her stability in turning is impressive: considering a mass of more than 65 tons, we managed a perfect, full rudder, 360° turn, with motors going at 2000 rpm and a turning radius of about 80 meters. Noise levels were well controlled, too, with a maximum of 75 decibels at the helm station when going full throttle. The yacht we tested had the optional electric CMC Marine stabilizing fins and gyroscopic stabilizers installed.

A 42 sqm Flying Bridge The Azimut 80 is featured with L shaped sofa that can be arranged as desired. Alongside the helm there are two sofas positioned in a C facing the large table seating 8. On the fly there is a bar unit with a barbecue, refrigerator and sink.It also houses a retractable 42-inch TV and is the base for an elegant Plexiglas bar counter. To aft, the second area can be left unencumbered, furnished with sofa, set aside for the tender or as sun deck, or fitted with a Jacuzzi.

The aft platform It is almost 9 square metres and provides the launch and retrieval of tenders exceeding 4 metres or of jet skis.

t’s a trend, much appreciated by yachters and supported by designers.

Cruising vessels need to be roomy, at any cost. And on a sailboat, when you’re not sleeping, you spend 90% of your time in the cockpit. The Oceanis 55 from Bénéteau is nearly the flagship for the range. The only one bigger is just 58 feet. Launched in 2013, she is the fruit of two design studios: Berret Racopeau for the hull and Nauta for the interiors. To examine the cockpit, let’s begin by looking at its dimensions: 270cm long and 306 cm wide, with 216 cm benches. But there’s more, since the seating is L-shaped, there’s another 90 cm before reaching the companionway. During the test, there were eight of us on board and there was still plenty of room. For comfort and conven-

ience, the two sun pads are located on the deckhouse beside the companionway. They are two meters long and, one imagines, very popular when anchored in port or harbor. It is not only the deckhouse with its two sun pads providing so much space for passengers, the two wheels have been positioned totally aft. Seating is not blocked by maneuvering. The jib winches are near the wheels, situated on a fiberglass base, so that they are handy for the helmsman rather than behind the backs of passengers seated in the cockpit, as is usually the case. The two sun pads on the deckhouse are not blocked by the top of the halyards since they run externally to the cockpit, under the deck, to reemerge forward of the helms where obviously there are stoppers. This means the cockpit is free of obstacles so that passengers can sit there while sailing without getting in the

The interior style by Nauta Design is unmistakable. It is very elegant and plays on the clear and dark contrast. The Oceanis 55 has three double cabins, two bathrooms and a convertible dinette. It is also available in a four cabin version.

way of whoever is manning the wheels or trimming the sails. And the mainsail sheet? It is kept well clear of the cockpit because the blocks are attached to a rollbar. So no traveler, obviously, but neither are there blocks “raining down” on the deckhouse. On the model we tested the mainsail winch was electric and very easy to regulate with precision. With the rigging on the rollbar, the sheet can be on the end of the boom, making it easier to regulate without excessive effort.

On the other hand, the rollbar is not very attractive and it somewhat hinders visibility, particularly when the sprayhood goes from the rollbar all the way to forward of the companionway and the two sun pads. When there is a lot of spray, the skipper has to lean very far out to check the sails because central visibility can be bad. The twin wheels compensate for this to some extent, as does the lateral positioning of the helm seats. The stern area was also designed with

the sailors’ needs in mind. The backstay is double and there is a long seat between one wheel and the other, with a stainless steel bathing ladder which serves also for hooking the stays. The transom can be electrically lowered to form a beach platform level with the water. With the stern open, she looks like a regatta racing boat. The beach platform is fully 340 cm wide. There are two layout options, with three or four cabins. The Oceanis 55 we tried was the three-cabin version, with the master cabin forward and two twin cabins aft. With two heads, but the master bath was particularly convincing. It was “split” in the sense that the toilet, located portside, is separate, while the entire starboard side is taken up by a large shower stall. Access to the second head is gained from the aft cabin located starboard of the dinette. For the four-cabin version, Nauta shifted the position of the head a bit portside, stealing a bit of space from the galley, and adding a bunkbed cabin starboard. The layout of For the the dinette expresses the great versatility planned by the Italian design studio. When we haul anchor and pull away from the with dock of the Real Club Nautico, the wind is at nearly twenty knots. She handles well close hauling. We get up 30° and a speed of 7.3 knots. Spreading out to beam reach, we get all the way up to 9.5. At broad . reach, she slows a little. No furling gennaker was planned for this vessel, since it would have to be asymmetrical and the yard’s managers wouldn’t dream of raising one. On we go, the GPS registering speeds between 8 and 9 knots, and true wind at between 17 and 18. In the occasional wind holes, she tends to ego dead in the water, a good indication that her performance in calm winds is not so exciting. On the other hand, Oceanis 55 is a cruising boat, and so rather heavy. In good winds, she behaves admirably and her weight contributes to keeping pitching to a bare minimum. The only thing that left us a bit perplexed was the rudder system. It is not particularly easy to handle but is instead rather stiff, even when running downwind. Mooring presents no difficulty, since she is outfitted with a 360° Docking system, designed at the yard in collaboration with ZF and operated by joystick and rotating pod drive. In reverse we felt very little prop walk and the boat steered easily and straight. In the versions outfitted with a bow thruster, the system works also with it and makes maneuvering a breeze. This, too, means comfortable cruising.

anieri International presents itself at the start of the new season in the best possible shape, 4 new arrivals that

enrich a range made of over 30 models split into three lines: Open (Revolution and Voyager), Cabin (Atlantis and CLF) and Sundeck (Shadow). The Calabrese yard has a production specialized in hulls of small sizes, the flagship is 30 feet but they are studying a boat of 35 feet, and it has numerous collaborations with various engine manufacturers such as Suzuki and Honda. Pietro Ranieri, founder of the brand, is supported by his sons Antonio and Salvatore. Ranieri International consists of 50 employees who work in a sort of "assembly line": each of them has its own specialization and the boat passes through the hands of everyone. It is a leading brand in Italy with a discreet pres-

ence throughout Europe, particularly in France, Greece, Holland, Switzerland, Spain, Czech Republic and Turkey. It signed an important agreement eight years ago, with Suzuki Italy and made two significant partnerships with Suzuki Greece and a commercial collaboration with Honda Europe. Soverato boats are positioned in a medium-high market sector thanks to the use of quality materials and a high level craftsmanship. Salvatore Ranieri is particularly proud of his work: "We don’t aim at creating a cheap product, as it happens in some corporations that act in this way to the detriment of quality. We preserve a high residual value and keep the possibility to resell them in the future. "The manufacturing facility is approximately 20,000 square meters of which 9,000 indoors, the center for testing and storage is about ten thousand square meters. Since 2013 Ranieri International has owned the management of Badolato Marina, a marina with 350 berths, in the Ionian Sea of Calabria.

nthusiasm is the greatest gift Man possesses. It is the vital energy that stimu-

lates ideas. It is the road to success. It is the pillar around which we can move freely and express our creativity. And it is with enormous enthusiasm that these entrepreneurs have taken on the decision to relaunch the Dominator brand. Their enthusiasm is supported by a unique industrial vision and solid financial knowhow. Austrian entrepreneur, Wolfgang Pernsteiner, and top manager Francesco Serafini have taken the helm of the company. While their general headquarters are locat-

ed in Vienna, we had the pleasure of meeting with them at their modern industrial site in Fano, Italy. FM – What makes an IT manager decide to get into the shipbuilding business? FS – I’ll tell you very simply: I was born in Fano and spent twenty-five years working abroad and seeing our country from a foreign perspective. I wanted to contribute my business skills to my country. I’ve always loved boats, so getting involved in the nautical industry was a natural choice for getting started in a new professional adventure. FM – How much of this adventure is rooted in reason and how much in passion? FS – To tell the truth, it’s 50-50. Passion, to do business in my hometown. Reason, because Dominator shipyards operate with valid business models and a modern manufacturing plant which has enormous potential. Plus, since I have acquired years of experience working internationally, I believe I have a lot to offer towards developing the brand. I came into contact with the company for various reasons and was offered an opportunity to invest economically in the company and to put my international experience to good use. FM – You are a concrete example of the concept that a crisis can be an opportunity. FS – I am convinced that there are great financial resources in the world so which translated into great opportunities for manufacturers of luxury goods like yachts. In a stable market it is more difficult to make a name for yourself, whereas when the situation is critical, competitive players have the edge. I believe that the nautical industry needs to go first through an emotional phase and then one aimed at making the industrialization process more modern and flexible, exploiting the capacity to create custom-designed products, but finding a less structured way to do so. Another important aspect that will make a difference is our cash flow management and how we use our resources.

Francesco Serafini FM – When you were starting out, the international nautical industry was in deep recession. Didn’t that scare you? FS – No, we were prepared to deal with an ongoing economic crisis. We set ourselves a 5-year goal and we figured that for at least two of them, we would have been dealing with a difficult market, and that if the difficult years were more than two, it wouldn’t matter to us because our 5-year plan would simply become a 7-year plan. Our first order of business was to redefine our production capacity so that we would have a number of motor boats ready for when the market recovered. FM – Coming, as you do, from totally different business sectors, having been merely nautical consumers in the past, what kind of added value do you bring to this activity? FS – Personally, I come from an industry characterized by three fundamental parameters: first of all, innovation, secondly customer service and thirdly, concern for people. I believe that these three parameters have an effect on this industry as well, because if you look at it from the outside, you see that after-sale service has not been standardized. If you leave distribution up to external dealers, the quality of service the customer receives will depend greatly on the individual dealer. There isn’t enough focus on after-sale service so this is an area that we need to work on. Especially in a sluggish market, increasing brand loyalty through dependable customer service adds inestimable value. FM – But is there room for your project to leap forward, or do you need to evolve and grow slowly, because boat owners are rather conservative in this sense? FS – I believe that what they want is to see a product that maintains its value over time and that can grow not only in

size but in terms of the kind of service they get and the use they make of the product. The product should be used the way the owner wants to use it, making the most of the time he can dedicate to his boat. Whether the boat is large or small doesn’t matter. What matters is that services are tailored to meet the owner’s needs, and this is an innovative aspect, in my opinion. FM – Having a boat with low fuel-consumption is a not really a priority for a boat owner who spends only about a hundred hours a year on his boat, when all is said and done. A hundred hours of fuel does not actually amount to much money in comparison with the cost of the boat itself.

DOMINATOR 780 Overall length 24 m • Beam 6.05 m • Displacement 60 ton • Engines 2X1550 Hp or 2x1800 Hp Man Commonrail • 4 guest cabins + 2 crew cabins • Max people on board 16

FS – This is true, but we have to take the emotional aspect into consideration, too. All marketing strategies today point toward reducing fuel consumption and cutting down on waste, so there are ethical considerations that affect technological advances. I think there is still plenty of room for improvement as far as this is concerned. FM – Do your products belong to the “Made in Italy” identity, or are they part of a more global market? FS – Well, I believe that one of the most valuable things our country contributes to the world is our capacity to create a style, or even the concept of style itself. I am convinced that if these same boats were built anywhere else in the world, their value would decrease.

FM – So, your objective is to create a product of unbeatable excellence? FS – Definitely. The real challenge lies in being able to customize the boat to the owner’s liking while keeping costs under control. I think this is an opportunity to bring some of the typical characteristics of large boats to the smaller boats and this will keep prices in a range that is still affordable, which I think boat owners up to a certain market sector will appreciate. FM – So the kind of product is defined by the customer. FS – Our advantage lies in having a product that is predetermined as far as the basic lines and esthetics are concerned, but

with interiors that can be designed, laid out and constructed according to the customer’s specifications. With our boats, it is difficult to find two alike, even if they are both the same model. When I say dissimilar, I don’t mean only differences in kinds of wood or other materials, but even the layouts are different. Some prefer an open galley with a wet bar, others want it closed off, some would rather have a study than an extra cabin… These are the kind of differences you can find and it is quite easy for us to offer them, because these boats were designed to be customized. FM – What is the size range of your boats? FS – Between 20 and 40 meters, with a focus mainly on fiberglass-hulled boats between 20 and 33 meters, although we did produce a 40-meter aluminum model in 2011. FM – What is your target market? FS – Central Europe and the Mediterranean with clients coming from Eastern Europe, especially Russia and Ukraine. The Turkish market is growing and demand in the Middle East is once again beginning to be substantial. In the medium term, I’d say the time is not ripe for Asia to develop a consistent nautical market. FM – How much has the overall investment been to launch this project? FS – Several million euros. Both stockholders are committed to a long-term investment and neither needs to see quick returns. All profits generated are re-invested in the company. For yacht owners, this is a reassuring guarantee. FM – After the 640, what are your next projects going to be? FS – We’ve got some young boats coming up. The 780 was designed three years ago, the 720 two years ago, now we’ve made the 640. The 29-meter boat is already in the water and has a rather young line, in terms of the kind of market we’re aiming at. We have a new take on the 680 and a new project for an 880.

what you will, this is Selva’s strategy. The basic concept is to supply problem-free products. Selva has always been an outboard motor manufacturer. Moreover, it has been the only outboard motor manufacturer in Europe for quite a while now. The company’s vast range of products includes two- and four-stroke engines and the famous Torqeedo electric motors from Germany. This line of motors is flanked by an equally wide range of rubber dinghies and fiberglass boats, in a variety of lengths to suit every need. The idea of offering a package is certainly nothing new, but what sets Selva apart is the vastness of choices available. In addition to motors, the company has contracted with a number of boatyards to be able to offer their customers many types of boats. For problem-free seafaring adventures, there are now various payment plans available, not to mention a five-year guarantee. A boat is more than just a hull and a motor. That’s why Selva’s offers also include a series of indispensible navigational accessories. The package contains everything, including the wheel, the helm and the instruments. Last but not least: don’t equate great prices with skimping on quality. Good value for your money is particularly important in times of economic downturn. Selva offers reliable products and services, while keeping prices under control. Their secret is volume, with the bulk of customers coming from abroad, since even developing countries appreciate their package deals and the availability of small and mediumsized boats. While the boats are simple, without frills or useless accessories, they are not bare. The advantage to this is, if it isn’t there, it can’t be broken. But whatever is really necessary will be on board. The company also offers more luxurious packages, like the one born from an agreement with the French shipyard, Bénéteau. We tried out two of their Flyer

series, a 6.5 meter and a 5.5 meter, on the waters of Lake Como. Besides the two Bénéteau, equipped with Selva motors, we also tested the new Elegance 6.7 and the “anti-recession” boat, the Tiller. Why is it called “anti-recession”? Because they give you a 4.5 meter boat equipped with a 9.9 horsepower outboard engine all for ?3700, including VAT. About the same as you’d pay to buy a scooter.

Bénéteau Flyer 650 A versatile boat must have a versatile hull. The 650 has a good stability and it is easy to handle. It promptly responds to reversals as well as the snap accelerations. With these features it can be used for all water sports as well as fishing and skiing. We have tested it with a 115 hp outboard, but it can also be equipped with a 200 hp. The performances are more than enough because it plans at 3,600 rpm at ten knots and it reaches a maximum speed of 34.1 knots at 5,900 rpm. With a not too powerful engine we have three advantages . At first you do not weigh down the transom and even the truck , as the 650 is towable. Then , it doesn’t consume a lot of fuel, at the top speed it burns 37 liters and just 16 at the minimum of plan . Finally the package cost is low.

It’s called XSR the new Selva Marine outboard range for those who love the sea and the high performance: Dorado 40XSR, Murena 40XSR 16V, Tarpon 115XSR, Killer Whale 150XSR and the novelty Marlin 100XSR

Bénéteau Flyer 550 The Flyer 550 has a very flexible lay out. The two pilot and copilot seats can revolve and complete the living area that has a linear aft bench and a small table. The whole area of the bow, however, can be used as a sundeck. The helm station isn’t in the middle, so there is only a wide walkway on the left to go at bow. We have tested it with a 40/60 Hp that shows the whole wide range of Selva packages. The engine is a "no license", so it can be used by anyone. The performances are good thanks to a not heavy displacement . It plans in 10 knots and has a cruising speed of between 20 and 25 knots. The top speed is more than 26 knots. The beauty of a 40/60 is not just that you don’t need a license, but above all that consumption varies from 11 (minimum) and 22 (maximum) liters per hour.

The 6.7 is the newest model and the flagship of the range. It is a well equipped day cruiser. It has a central helm station so you can move on board easily even with many people. The space under the console can be used as a big locker or for an optional chemical WC. The bow and the stern can be turned into two sunbathing areas. We’ve tested a model with the maximum power of 150 Hp outboard which is the right engine for this kind of boats. It can easily plan and has a wide range of cruising speeds, from less than 20 till 35 knots. At a top speed it burns 48 liters per hour and less than 13 at the minimum of plan.

A five star‌ marina Ilaria Cianci, 34 years old, is the woman “steeringâ€? Marina dei Cesari, the tourist port of Fano, in the Marche. Ambitious and demanding of herself and others, Ilaria Cianci has been for almost ten years an important figure for the Marina dei Cesari and has always expressed a speci-

fic interest for the career of the port director, a position she reached in May of this year. If the actual training took place "in the field", within the same structure, to deepen and improve her professional skills she has spent the last two years in practical and theoretical training. From October 2011 until May 2012, in fact, Ilaria attended the high culture course in Marina Management organized by the University of San Marino in collaboration with Marine Partners, a company specializing in the management of marinas. At the end of the course and after a brief experience in England to know the realities of the local tourism, she has contributed for six months to the start up of the Marina Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, collaborating to optimize the mooring plan, the information systems and the management data, in order to lay the foundations for management and reception of guests structured according to the standards now required for a modern marina. Young, woman, manager in a port of sailors. Has your new role also brought changes in the management and goals of the port? I am in line with the previous direction of Enrico Bertacchi who is now the CEO. Surely I want to pursue a job that has a good start to the maximum of what my possibilities are. First you need to attract more people, more boats, let the people "live" the structure more and continue to improve our services. So the port as a 5-star hotel? The international competition with Greece and Croatia on the one hand and France and Spain on the other require significant reflection and management skills: the difference just depends on how a boater is welcome and on the services he finds at the property. The potential market is very large if we think of the countries of central and northern Europe, in addition to the new Eastern European markets that insist on the Mediterranean Sea. In Marina dei Cesari we are well aware of the importance and the impact that the foreign tourism can have on our structure and we are working with particular attention to our international marketing plan. Is the Marina also frequented by foreign owners? Certainly, even if they are not so many in percentage. hat’s the difference between a “parking lot” for boats and a marina? Geographical context

and integration with local cultural heritage are undoubtedly determining factors. From this point of view, Marina di Scarlino is an ideal location. Leonardo Ferragamo, who became the marina’s sole shareholder this year, has a very clear vision of the potential of the structure to join with the surrounding territory, the Maremma, to become a major attraction not only for boat lovers, but for both international and proximity tourism. More than fifty local tourist service providing companies, restau-

rants and wineries have agreed to work together to highlight the already excellent productive and commercial properties of the area. Today Marina di Scarlino is a hub for the entire area, also thanks to the efforts of The Lifestyle Company. Opening these kinds of businesses that offer an alternative to old retail models, increasing the influx of visitors, creating greater service opportunities to benefit everyone and attracting foreign capital and know-how, are the keys to domestic and international growth. The involvement of premier-level partners has contributed to drawing unique formats to the Marina, such as the new beach club and swimming pool, built this year, and to developing collaborative offers, for example with Mortelle Winery owned by the Antinori family.

The Marina is immersed in a one-of-a-kind environment, far from crowds but close to immaculate beaches and typical Mediterranean pine woods. Marina di Scarlino is situated in the province of Grosseto in Tuscany, along one of the most beautiful coastlines in the Maremma.

The Marina has 560 berths including 56 reserved for boats in transit. The moorings are deployed on piers of floating docks and jetties, designed in order to guarantee safe moorings and easy access onboard. Access to the river canal is reserved for boats under 12 meters.

The entry of young and motivated managers, whose experience is not specifically in the nautical sector, but in similar upmarket spheres, has allowed innovative, international-style business models to evolve. Today Marina di Scarlino offers not only services for pleasure boaters, but also a resort real estate for sale or rent, restaurants, shopping center, beach club and swimming pool and even an art gallery featuring some open air artworks that are attracting both seasoned art lovers and the merely curious. The buzz has spread to the biggest names in fashion and Italian design who have chosen the Marina’s concept store to display their vintage-themed creations. Not to mention, of course, the maximum efficiency and accurate service dedicated to yachters who will find Marina di Scarlino to be a state-of-the-art facility in a breath-taking setting. It is a perfect location from which to explore the Mediterranean, nestled in the natural beauty that is the Maremma area of Tuscany, looking out on one of the most sheltered gulfs of the northern Tyrrhenian Sea. Sail from this magical spot to some of the most spectacular beaches in Italy, such as Cala Violina, just a few minutes sail away. The concept behind the Marina focuses on the idea of “easiness”: ease for boat handling and moorage, ease of navigational access to the most extraordinary places in the Mediterranean and easy access to the uncontaminated natural surrounding lands. The perfectly sheltered Marina allows boats to enter even in adverse sea or weather conditions. The 19th and 20th of October, the Marina di Scarlino is holding a two-day open house to give professionals and international entrepreneurs and investors an opportunity to really experience the territory and its Marina.

regional development programs, has created this event to promote the internationalization of and networking between Sicilian boat yards and marinas.

We were part of a delegation of journalists and buyers from all over the world that took a journey into this manyfaceted reality. Here, in this amazing land, rich in features of physical beauty that merge with a thousand-year-old culture, we experienced sensations that Sicily alone can provide. This initiative is a way to let the world know about the superlative boat yards and marinas Sicily has to offer. Our journey begins in Palermo at Marina di Porto Arenella, situated near the city center, not far from Villa Igea, and overlooked by the Castle of Utveggio. This marina has 118 berths and can host boats up to 40 meters long. We then moved on to Funari in the province of Messina, where we stopped off at Marina di Portorosa in the Gulf of Patti, a perfect point of departure for sailing to the Aeolian Islands. The marina has room for 700 vessels, ranging in size from 6 to 35 meters. Next stop: Porto Rossi, the port in the heart of the city of Catania, at the foot of Mount Aetna. The marina here dates back to 1961 when Pietro Rossi, a yachting enthusiast with a passion for the nautical world, managed to transform a former dump into an oasis for pleasure boaters. The mari-

na hosts 250 boats at the docks and 200 on land. From Catania, we headed towards Ragusa, visiting the splendid Marina there. This port is characterized mainly by its totally sheltered harbor, completely protected from waves, making mooring here truly a pleasure any time of year. This marina is a favorite destination for Maltese yachters who also appreciate the on-site boat yard, with over 1800 sq m of indoor facilities and an external area of 10,500 sq m. The yard efficiently carries out maintenance and refitting operations and can provide storage for any kind of vessel. Last winter the boats in dry storage here included eight 15-meter catamarans. Its location, so close to the Comiso airport, makes it attractive both for national and international visitors. Our tour ended in Licata, near Marina Cala del Sole, a modern, new marina ideally situated for travelling to the islands of Malta, Gozo, Pantelleria, Lampedusa, Linosa or even towards Spain and North Africa. With 1500 berths, the marina can host boats up to 70 meters in length. The marina was having a little festival while we were there, offering local food and wine, live music and the opportunity to take boats out to sea for trials. The closing press conference was also held here, stressing the need and importance for operators from the nautical sector to work together with government authorities to increase and improve the services available to pleasure boaters. A project is underway to create more berths with the construction of new docks in this area. Everything points to a new wave of positivity and optimism in the belief that the sector is taking off again and that those who kept the faith and kept investing in it are going to see their efforts rewarded. As Goethe put it, “Sicily is the key to everything.”

Above, Marina Cala del Sole. In the centre, Salvatore and Luigi Geraci. Below, a lovely view of Licata. Sicily’s artistic and cultural heritage is truly unique.
