The hard decision to invest only abroad We publish the letter signed by one of our advertisers who explain why he is forced to decline an advertising offer
Dear Director, It is with great pleasure that I read your advertising offer received by e-mail. It is very difficult not to accept it since we are a young company which uses advertising as the major communication tool to promote our brand. It is difficult but I am forced, despite myself, to refuse your offer. Few hours ago, I received two faxes almost contemporaneously which definitively convinced me to leave the Italian market and to invest our resources abroad. The first one comes from our major client who, considering «the high seasonality of the business» (these are the exact words of the advertiser, who signs the letter at the bottom of the page),
The perfect storm Sad remarks about seamanship, tourism and port facilities In the closing weekend of the Genoa International Boat Show, I experienced the bleakness already described by many people. I thought that the "Perfect Storm" could be experienced only over the widest oceans, but I had to change my mind! The almost empty pavilions and avenues, which were always full of people in the previous editions, have been an unpleasant surprise which strengthened my idea: tourism sector has been promoted only by single entrepreneurial initiatives for sever14

changed the terms of payment to defer debt payments by next year, in March. The second fax comes from another client who, because of bankruptcy, cannot afford to pay his debts and he says we will be lucky if he is able to pay the 25% of the total amount. In the first case, if he told me that the problem was "the discovery of life on the Moon", I would feel less duped. In the second case, the owner could have used his money to pay the suppliers instead of using them to boast of his unsinkable boats on the advertising pages of his own magazine. Moreover, if the boatyard went bankrupt, why didn't he warn sales leads? This year we did not participate in the
al years and its importance has been ignored by citizens and, above all, by the government. This had a negative impact on our economy but it is an insult to our intelligence too. We live in a country (an intentionally tiny country) which has the 80% of the world cultural, environmental and archaeological beauties but we are also the only country which called a national referendum to abolish the Ministry of Tourism! It seems incredible. Seamanship has been often considered just a show of wealth but, on the contrary, it means tourism, satellite industries, develop-
Genoa International Boat Show and in Seatec. This year, with almost the same amount of money, we were in Miami and Dubai, we participate in Mets and next year we will be in London and Istanbul. How can we work serenely if we are afraid of our own Italian sales leads? The Italian government has almost destroyed our beautiful toy and unfortunately the remaining pieces are controlled by people who send faxes which have to be signed for acceptance. We hope we will be on your pages soon, but for now we do not feel like investing in Italy at all. Best regards and hope for the best, Signed letter
ment, job creation and culture. It took twenty years to make it grow and become one of the major "Made in Italy" excellences (we are still the first 24 metre sailboat builders in the world) and it took only one season to make it almost die (30,000 boats are moored in various harbours in Croatia, Corsica, Tunisia etc., nearly 20,000 boatyard, harbour and tourist sector employees lost their jobs in the summer). Politicians went to the Genoa International Boat Show - together with their entourage - and said «Sorry, we were wrong...perhaps we should not...» but no one
said: «Tomorrow morning we will send a bill, we will bring a decree, we will do our best to solve the problem». However, in this negative scenario, there are signs of recovery emerging. Talking about tourism sector and port facilities, which are key elements for the recovery of the seamanship sector, I notice with pleasure that new realities were born, putting together their strenghts in order to develop small but efficient Networks of harbours, based on modern and unique management criteria which can guarantee quick and standardized services. With regard to this, I would

like to suggest to those who will try to overcome this economic crisis with courage and determination to not make the same mistakes which led us to this difficult economic, identity and cultural crisis. I think that the most representative figures of this sector should come together to develop a stronger and more coherent sector, in order to overcome all the adversities. In my opinion, there will surely be a recovery, probably a slow and painful recovery, but it will also give the opportunity to face new and exiting challanges. Vessel Captain (R) Angelo Zerilli

Lak II being sold by auction The initial selling price is 180 thousand Euros and the auction will take place on the French Riviera on Jan 10th. The players are Jean-Emmanuel Prunier (France) and La Suite (Barcelona). Lak II is a famous racing boat dating back to 1939 and built for the Marquis of Ávila, then sold to Baron Marcel von Bich and finally to the current owner. The hull is in excellent conditions thanks to a recent renovation and the offer also includes the boat’s berth at Hyeres, near Saint-Tropez and Marseille. 14 m long and 3,10 m wide, it has black hull and 2,08 meter fishing.
Vincenzo Zottola He was elected President at Comitato Filiera Nautica of Unionfiliere. Zottola was born in Gaeta in 1948 and started his career as a tour operator and hotel owner,
and then he held various institutional offices. He played in the Premier League of Handball Gaeta, in 2009 he was re-elected President at Chamber of Commerce of Latina and is currently ViceChairman at Unioncamere Lazio with responsibility for tourism, boating and innovation. In 2012 he has been appointed President at Confcommercio Lazio. President at Assonautica Latina, he is also member of the Board of Directors at Assonautica Italiana since November 2012.
A bridge between Tuscany and Holland A bilateral conference was organized at the Interporto of Tuscany by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and by Confindustria Livorno in the context of Olandiamo program in Tuscany. Both sides show willingness and need to co-operate with reciprocal advantages, exemplified also by a series of successful one-to-one meetings between Dutch and Livorno entrepreneurs. Among the various topics: infrastructure and logistics, environment, sustainable development, marine pollution, coastal defense, shipbuilding, tourism.
Tigullio boat operators
The disappointment of Ucina
The committee devoted to bring back in Tigullio the numerous boats that in recent years have "preferred" staying elsewhere was started a year ago. In a year the operators have tried to stimulate the improvement of services at all levels, from port facilities to accommodations. In particular, efforts have focused on Lavagna and Chiavari. The result of this work and the commitment by Tigullio boat operators have been positive because despite the crisis a moderate movement of boats has been noticed compared to the previous year. The hope is to improve at the best in future, for the benefit of all, citizenship, ship-owners, operators and suppliers.
President of Confindustria nautica, Anton Francesco Albertoni, expresses his disappointment in verifying that there is no reference to boating in Dl Crescita: "there is no track of what has been discussed during the Salone di Genova, indeed in Dl Crescita there isn’t a single word about boating and nautical tourism. All this occurs while the jobs lost from this area have exceeded 20,000 units share». The sector has seen halving its contribution to Gdp and vanishing the internal market – which has sold 85% in two years – because of bureaucratic constraints and fiscal persecution: it seems clear by now that the policy is not intended to deal with the problems of this industrial sector.
An atoll for Riccione
A very ambitious project will be presented on February at the University of Ferrara: an artificial atoll three miles from viale Ceccarini, with a diameter of one kilometer. The project includes a port, hotels, residences, parks and shops. The idea is to support and expand tourism in Riccione and the budgeted cost for its realization is around one billion Euros. It seems that the first to take an interest are Saudis entrepreneurs and investment funds of Northern Europe.

Porto di Lavagna Porto di Lavagna Company has registered a summons for nonextension of the public concession. Local newspapers report that according to lawyers the memorandum of understanding must be categorized as bilateral contract, which commits the Administration to an extension of the concession for a period compared to the amount of work that will be carried out by the dealer. A 35-year extension was requested (till 2024). According to lawyers, the non-extension of the public concession would entitle to receive 10 million Euros refund by the municipality.

Luca Dini Design Luca Dini has designed two concepts, 55 meters and 72 meters, dedicated to Innovation line. In the first one, glass has a predominant role as the roof of the wheelhouse is expected to be covered with a series of solar panels to provide the boat with a good percentage of necessary energy.
The second one, 72 meters, was designed in collaboration with designer Stefano Ricci and its starting point is the typical external stanchion by Benetti. Among the main features: the glass side panel that develops in height inspired by the skyscrapers with the use of heat-repellent glass and built-in glass balconies.
Benetti In the last months of 2012 Benetti Yachts introduced some novelties. These include Custom FB 265, 63 meters, whose official launch is planned for 2014. It has steel hull and aluminum superstructure, interior spaces organized on four levels. Tradition Supreme 108, designed by Stefano Righini, 32.98 meters long with structure in composite and sun deck, roll-bar and hardtop structure in glass-carbon composite, three decks (delivery on October 2013), and Delfino 93 Zaphira, blue hull, 28.5 meters long, exterior lines by Righini and interiors by Carlo Galeazzi (delivery late 2012).

“Conscious”captures A plan of action was proposed by the European commission to protect seagulls that are often accidentally captured by fishing equipment. Scientific data shows that numerous species, including albatrosses, petrels, shearwaters, auk, sea ducks and loons are victims. The measures of protection adopted until now have been ineffective and interventions are now planned for longlines and fixed nets, trawls, and purse seiners. The plan combines binding and nonbinding measures and the norms apply both to EU vessels in EU and non-EU waters, and to vessels of non-EU countries in European waters.

Ice in Greenland The increase in temperature caused Greenland to lose 200 million tons of ice in 9 years, between April 2002 and August 2011. The zones most subjected to melting were the Southeast and Northwest coasts. From 2008 on, the rise of ice mass in the coastal zones of the southwest has diminished, while in the center of Greenland the layer of ice has grown consistently over the course of the last 10 years. This is
demonstrated by a study by Christopher Harig and Simons Frederik from Princeton University, in the United States. The true particularity of the research can be found in the method: the studies were based solely on the relative data concerning gravity provided by the two satellites of the project Gravity Recovery Experiment and Climate (Grace), a space observation program managed by NASA and by the German Space Agency (DLR).
Prestige and Justice More than 10 years have passed since the disaster that took place in 2002 off the shore of the Galizia, when the single-hull tank Prestige launched its SOS, before sinking a week later, with 77 thousand tons of oil. In Spain, on La Coruña, the trial of those responsible for that tragic event has recently begun. The oil spill affected nearly 2,000 kilometers of the Spanish coast.
Emperor Penguins An enormous marine park An agreement was recently signed between IUCN (The International Union for the Conservation of nature) with the government of the Cook Islands to help define a new maxi-protected marine area between French Polynesia and Samoa. It will contribute to the conservation of the biodiversity of the region, to the relaunching of the local economy and the protection of ocean health. The marine park stretches over 1,065 million square kilometers and is the largest reserve ever defined by a single state. This zone includes remote atolls, volcanic islands surrounded by coral reefs and pristine wildlife with seamounts, not to mention birds, whales, mantas, and different species of sharks, some of which are at risk of extinction.

After about 10 years of research by a French team, the researchers of the Institut polaire francais (Ipev) have found two colonies of penguins in an eastern Antartic area that belong to the same population divided in 2010. In 2009 they discovered the likely location of the colony, but the following year the breaking of a giant piece of the same glacier has drastically modified the landscape, forming small icebergs. Starting from these analysis they’ve also calculated that today the number of “parents” is about three times more than was previously estimated. They’ve counted about 2,000 cubs in one colony and another 4,000 in the second one and from this the researchers can say that in this area there are probably more than 8,500 breeding pairs.

Where there’s smoke… The pillar of smoke could be seen from 15 miles off the coast of Miami rising from the flames engulfing a yacht, estimated to be worth somewhere between 750 thousand and a million dollars. The three crew-members were able to leap overboard to safety while the cause of the fire remains unknown. Although such episodes are rare, they are a bit less so in Miami: in 2011, luxury yachts caught fire in Coconut Grove Marina on three separate occasions.

ow to overcome stereotypes about China? Only through knowledge, meetings and having the patience to listen. The first World Yachting Sanya Serenity Marina Forum on the island of Hainan, at the southern ends of the Asia, was an interesting opportunity for exchange and discussion between our culture and the culture of various members of the nautical Chinese world. As well as me this international forum was attended by the Italian architects and designers Sergio Beretta, Fulvio De Simoni, Mauro Micheli, Gianni and Martina Zuccon. Our architects spoke about their professional life and the way of

designing a boat. It was a real cultural exchange that left something mysterious still to be discovered. My speech, by precise request of the organizers, was about the nautical world situation, but I'll spare you. It wasn’t the first time I had been to China, but this time I appreciated more some aspects of their way of thinking and interacting with the western world. The thing that struck me the most was the language used. The way of communicating was frank and direct. It is possible that this feeling of clarity was due to simplified translations by the Chinese to Italian interpreters, anyway I am convinced that linear thinking is one of their values. The views expressed were also in contradiction with each other, indicating that there is not a single thought that moves all things, for example the idea expressed by those who say they need more ports and the idea of those who say there are already too many of them and you have to rationalize. Yang Xinfa, director of the Boat branch of China association of the national shipbuilding industry, has made a very precise analysis of the situation of the nautical sector in China defining it strategic, highly cultural and technological. Xinfa considers Chinese constructions and their design mature, the investments in that industry risky, and complained that at the beginning he hadn’t received any help from the government. Today the situation is different, enough to be able to export

Today the government is helping to build ports and is changing the legislations to facilitate the use of boats and to obtain a boating license. Even his comment on the lack of development in the Chinese nautical market appears precise: there are obstacles in the law and the fact that using a boat means getting a tan while white is liked in China. They must change their culture and the idea that boating is only for the rich. Copying is easy, but it is important to create a nautical culture in China. They don’t know how to use a boat, and they suffer from seasickness because they are not used to the waves. Also according to Xinfa they must lower the price of rents (700 euro / hour for a 60 foot boat). There is also an important sociological problem about the relationship between the people and the private entrepreneurs who run the marinas. Those areas being of public origin, means that they belong to everyone, the central govabout 2 million pieces of nautical artifacts of any kind. must have a permit establishing where are you going, who you are going with and why . Exactly the opposite of the spirit of yachtsmen. Luckily they are also aware of this and are trying to change the legislation. Liu Dianfang, secretary of Xiamen Yacht Industry Association, has a clear vision of the problems hindering the development of yachting in China: "We need to increase the capacity of development of marine resources, push the government to change the rules, and make the right communication to the market. There are 20 cities that organize a boat show, it's a waste that must be rationalized: two neighboring cities should work together, but today everyone works on his own. Today the economy is not going well and we need to make a better use of resources. We need to make a national association (today there are 20). Our situation is like in the 60s in France. Here there are 300 boats, but only as ornament, no one uses on-board services, it’s a waste, we must recover the culture of old sailboats, have more marinas, more advertising, organize more regattas and motorboat races. We must learn your rules and recognize certification corporate bodies such as Rina. The process is tumultuous and it makes you smile a little to hear them talking about a crisis only because their GDP was grown by 7%. They are very aware of their strength, opened to change, but ready to respond with measures to protect their system. They are organizing many competitions with a real boom in sailing contests with 20 international regattas. According to Liu Dianfang "sailboats will be more popular in the future because they can be used by many people at the same time, there aren’t yet many young skipper and the most successful ones are old: many people here do not understand yet what sailing involves and we have to train the new recruits, so we have encouraged thousands of schools to adopt sailboats to teach young Chinese people how to sail". According to the president of the International Yacht Harbour, Kuang Xiangrong, in the past we always used to arrive last in the regat-

Liu DianFang Secretary of Xiamen Yacht Industry Association, suggests interesting insights for the development of sailing in China: "The shipyards must follow quality protocols, we should have more time for fun, and the rich ones want more personalized exclusive boats. The government should give us a permit to manage clubs in a better way and with the lower prices. Marinas should join in a network so owners can change clubs when they want to (joining a sailing club is very expensive, about $ 15,000 per year of fixed fee plus mooring fee, about $ 270 per month for a 5 meter boat); it is necessary to open agencies to organize boat trips. European ship-yards are penalizing us selling boats at lower prices and we have to react: the government should lower taxes on Chinese boats (a form of local production protectionism). We also need to give importance to insurance because in China only 1% of boats are insured. Local governments should build marinas in order to help spread boating and the port standard services should be unified. We do not have qualified human resources to manage them and we have to send people abroad to learn . In China there is not even a boat fully developed by us, we lack installation technicians: we have few experts and many ship-yards. We must work together with universities in order to organize specialized courses".
tas, today we are winning. "In China the boat represents wealth, but to have a development it should not only symbolize money, power and girls in bikinis: the press gives the wrong image through misinformation to ordinary people. Boats help to make us richer: if a country is good at making boats is good at everything. In China we used to build sailing boats more than 100 years ago and they were 125 meter long. Just think that Christopher Columbus discovered America with a 26 meter long caravel! We are very good at studying sailing boats, but we are afraid of the water. We must protect our cultural character and have more love for the sea". The Forum has had quite a time of debate among our architects and the Chinese ones , Andy Chen, editor of The Yachting Lifestyle Chinese magazine, asked Giovanni Zuccon if there is a particular trend in design today.

Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta Sergio Beretta: "Bergamo, the city in which the studio founded together with Mauro Micheli is based, is a small but famous art city in Italy and art is really what inspires our work, especially modern art. The main features of our boats are clean lines with a contemporary feel and a classic design that never goes out of fashion". Mauro Micheli: "This is our first time in China and our aim is to understand this market which is new to us, as it is to China itself. We work primarily with Riva, and from a certain point of view we are privileged because it is one of the most famous brands in the world and has a classic style. way of living, but we have too many elements that have nothing to do with navigation». Mauro Micheli «In Europe, a yacht is a luxury and is often also a symbol of the success that a person has achieved in life. Probably in China there isn’t yet the culture of sailing, but there are already Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, and brands such as Gucci and Armani. When even yachts are perceived as luxury probably China will have a different interest in yachts». Fulvio De Simoni, «Why have you made so many marinas in China?« Vincent Wang: «It is a way of living. China is very different from Italy: this industry is supported by the government and all entrepreneurs want to invest. Here the fashion for yachting has started, but a few years ago we already had sufficient marinas for all the yachts. Building marinas is a profitable business. There are so many Chinese people and there are a lot of traders here who want to invest when there is a good margin. When there was a boom in yacht building (2008), within a year there were more than 300 ship-yards, but when the crisis came more than 200 went bankrupt. This is why you see all these empty marinas: the yacht culture is not yet ready and the boats built haven’t been sold yet. I’m a nautical consultant for the city of Shanghai. Along the river that runs through this city there were ship-yards that were later demolished because the town wants to revitalize this area as a reference point for nautical culture». Fulvio De Simoni, «In every country of the world there are the poor, the middle class and the rich, and wherever there is the sea, the poor ones do not buy boats, the middleclass buy small and medium sized boats and the rich, those who have already bought houses, cars and villas, also buy boats. If in China the ties to navigation are reduced the same thing will happen and boats will be used as in the other countries of the world. Of course, this will not be easy or immediate, because the culture is very different from the West». Gianni Zuccon «I’m here now and I will continue to come because I want to see if we have opportunities to make products that can be filled into this market, as in any other market. Fulvio De Simoni "During my 30 year career I have learned that there are no big differences in the world from one place to another. When a country has the sea and some disposable income, surely sooner or later people will want to have a boat. In China this is already happening and much faster than what has happened in other countries. Of course, everyone has his own tastes in terms of boats, but needs are all similar. In the recent decades, boats have changed a lot, sailing has evolved. Today, we can classify four types of boats: dislocating, comfortable, large and slow (Wider 150), classic European styled motor yachts (Rodman), sport boats with particular attention to the use of the sun deck (Pershing) and lobster typed boats (Austin Parker). Much has changed, so the study of design has also adapted to the various styles and construction methodologies have also evolved: in a few years we have gone from wooden boats to fiberglass ones, infusion, numeric control, etc. The project I was most impressed with in the recent years is Wider 42, the apex of technology , with performing hull, low power consumption, excellent use of spaces and ease of handling with light but resistant materials”.

is becoming smaller (with much faster communications) I want to keep these identities alive. De Simoni is right to say that the world, from a certain aesthetic point of view, seems to be all the same, but the elements of homogenization are the ones involving the whole world, such as airports, which are the exchange points of all cultures. However, the house of the architect Zuccon, the houses of Chinese and American architects are different because different is the way to live them». Hia Jun «In all the world there is now a fashionable trend of Italian style, which characterizes many ship-yards and many French, British or American companies. Why is Made in Italy so popular around the world?».
dimensional modeling. For boats and any other project we are able to develop models that allow us to create products with cutters and numerical control machines. Regarding project areas, the future, in our view, is to continue to pursue the concept of a multidisciplinary approach with the strengthening of other sectors,
such as "product design". Another important task is the creation of a brand, Zuccon SYD, superyacht design, a division of our studio specialized solely in the development of projects of boats over 40 meters in steel and aluminum".
The two days of the Forum were full of ideas and very interesting insights to understand the real possibilities of yachting development in China.

Mauro Micheli «Because is one of the few things that the Italians know how to do, and probably a part of our culture and our history. Quality is the most important feature in the Italian style and has a perfect balance between shape and function». Giovanni Zuccon «If I’m not wrong in China, there are 1,300 schools of design and I think thanks of this commitment to training, within a few years China will take an important role in the identification of his own style. Obviously this will depend on many other factors, economical and political». Andy Chen: I have a question for the two Chinese architects: speaking of Italian style, how do you intend to integrate it into your own projects? Giovanni Zuccon My design and project activities have always been carried out through civil architecture and industrial design and I considered fundamental to venture in different disciplinary areas: architecture of home spaces, architecture of office spaces, design of boats, urban buses, intercity buses and granturismo coaches, interior design, etc.. sary to consider and dwell on various elements: beauty, functionality, safety and comfort. If we can find a balance between all these four factors we will certainly have the perfect design. It is true that we have 1,300 schools of architecture and about 1 million students, but we don’t have a clear idea of Chinese style, we do not know what it is. As the Italians we also have a long history and a deep artistic culture. Our designers are not incapable, but China is still a developing country, it must grow from the legislative point of view». This experience made us realize that China in terms of boating is a country with endless potential, but we should not delude ourselves on our ability to do business easily: they are in a phase of understanding this phenomenon, they have large financial resources and they are gearing up to compete culturally with us at the highest level. They are aware that they bought old molds from bank ruped shipyards in the West and they will try not to repeat the mistakes made in the past. Unfortunately there are people who are meant to be institutional high-caliber interlocutors, but their purpose is only to gain some good deals without considering the image of our country. Our institutions should watch over and supervise more these cases. I believe that only the large companies which will be able to build a proper support network, and train specialized technicians to manage the processes after the sale of boats, can have some real chances. The reliability problem is not apparent because most of the boats are not really sailed, or are sailed very little, but the time will come in which the delta between a quality boat and a mediocre one will make the difference. Moreover, there is not only one mono-cultural China, but many and often surprising versions of China.
emphasize the temporal duration of my relationships with companies. Since I don’t only consider it an aspect to be proud of, but because I consider "continuity" important for generating higher levels of design quality. The construction of a state of cultural affinity between designer and company is one of the elements on which I based my design work and project activity. I believe that only a thorough knowledge of human resources, of technological and productive possibilities and capabilities, along with a long-lasting relationship, are important conditions to ensure the strategic role of design in the search of the company’s identity in a meaningful way. Sabaudia’s Posillipo ship-yards, Varazze’s Baglietto shipyard, Ferretti Group – for which in particular I’m responsable for brands such as Forlì’s Ferretti Yachts, Fano’s Custom Line, Ancona’s Crn, Miami’s Bertram -, Torre Annunziata’s ApreaMare, Brescia’s Carrozzeria Portesi, Rome’s European Space Agency are famous names in Italian and international design and are certainly the most important names in my design career, those which made my job more interesting.

Three days, 25th edition, over 1300 exhibitors coming from over 39
countries and 19,000 visitors from 96 different nations: you might say these are only numbers, but they are numbers that denote a situation which has become pretty rare in the boating world. METS is the leading trade show for accessories and technology. It is held annually in Amsterdam and last November celebrated its 25th birthday. It all started in 1988 with only 100 exhibitors, but with each year the show consistently grew, eventually becoming the definitive event for manufacturers of nautical accessories. This year, too, it seemed like a “normal” trade show in a “normal” sector. But this normality has become rarer and rarer in our circles. There were exhibitors, visitors and distributors; people buying and people selling. Just like it’s supposed to be. No long faces, no tails between legs, no guns held to temples. The numbers don’t suffice to describe the atmosphere, because with the 1300 visitors came as many smiling faces. It’s not that we are prejudiced against our compatriots, but it is tough to find this “normality” at home. What is the secret of their success? A well-thought-out plan, a userfriendly exhibition and an organization that doesn’t rest on its laurels but is constantly thinking up ways to innovate and improve. Besides which, METS aims to excel. In the early 90s they instituted the Dame Awards, at which an international jury of experts must select the best accessories in each of six categories: clothing, hardware, propulsion, interiors, safety and electronics. These awards allow exhibitors to do more than display the “marketability” of their products. The exhibitors see METS as a chance to show off their excellence. The Dame competition challenges nautical accessory manufacturing companies to perfect and innovate their products and the pavilions are brimming with interesting new items. Who were the winners this year? There is a prize for the “best overall,” the absolute top winner. This year the
award went to the same exhibitor who won the propulsion category. The German company Torqeedo presented Deep Blue, an 80-horsepower, electric outboard engine. It is an interesting item which paves the way to the future, although only the near future, as this model does have its limits. The size is comparable to a regular outboard with a similar capacity, but requires two gigantic lithium batteries to power it. Don’t be afraid, though, because Torqeedo has figured out a way to stow them on board sternward, replacing the fuel tanks. The advantage, remember, is that you no longer need to pay two euros a liter for fuel. Limitations? It’s hard to imagine anyone retrofitting their boat with a new electric motor. It’s easier to picture it being installed on a new boat, predisposed for it. Besides, the two lithium batteries are certainly not removable, seeing how big they are. Therefore it requires a power source on-shore to “get a fill-up.” Finally, the most obvious deterrent is the cost: about 50 thousand euros. It’s expensive, even considering the long-term fuel savings that would defray the costs in the long run. Electric motors, at least so far, are a valid option for boats used professional: workboats, small barges or sailing schools’ service boats. Certainly, their use will become more widespread in the future. Manufacturers of lithium batteries are taking giant steps forward. By increasing power while reducing weight and volume, their efficiency is bound to improve over the next few years. Torqeedo’s model is probably a little oversize. They went from producing an outboard motor with a maximum of 6 hp, to this one with 80. Maybe they just wanted to show that it could be done, that there are no limits and that electric propulsion is the wave of the future, not only for the cars that are choking our city centers, but also for pleasure crafts. We are convinced, at any rate, that people will be talking about this motor, just as they were at METS, thanks to the Dame jury’s recognition of its merits. The winner in the safety category was in Reach produced by DeLorme. What is it? It is basically an evolved locator. Locators are those tracking devices which employ a
This year, exhibitors and visitors could try out the Smartphone Apps created for Mets. Getting around the show, visiting stands, getting together, consulting the catalogue and arranging meetings were all easy to do; proof that the organizers strive to outdo themselves year after year.

The new pilot’s seat by Besenzoni is ideal for steering from the flydeck. Reflecting minimalist furniture design of the 70s, the Dragonfly expresses the same concepts of simple lines and practicality. This perfect blend of rigorous craftsmanship and creative design details guarantees a comfortable and functional pilot’s seat, with a lowered backrest and a longer seat which can be adapted to specific needs, thanks to the manually adjustable armrests and seat. The skai upholstery can be customized in color and style to enhance your flybridge with exquisite details such as quilting, or logo or boat’s name.
The company Besenzoni has been designing and manufacturing nautical accessories for 40 years: hydraulic retracting exterior gangways, fly and bow davits, pilot’s seats, electric side doors and patio doors, oleo-dynamic bathing ladders and lateral ladders, hardtops and canopies, tender slides, electrically operated windows, hydraulic platforms and much more. Technological research is what has always driven the growth of this company from Bergamo, founded by Giovanni Besenzoni. The input of his son, Giorgio Besenzoni, has been fundamental. Following his father’s line of thinking, he has continued to merge attention to design details with intensive research and development, giving rise to some major innovations to the world of boating, such as the ladder-equipped stern platform and the remote-controlled hydraulic gangway. www.besenzoni.it
This is a new hinge designed for complex stern garage doors. It can be applied even on inclined surfaces and can bear very heavy loads. Its tri-axel system allows the stern door to be quickly and perfectly aligned with the transom. When the spoiler is open, Sphera is hidden from view.
Cleats and chocks Flexitab has a complete line of hardware called Deck Hardware, designed both to facilitate maneuvering and to give your boat a unique design. Resistant and practical, the line includes cleats, chocks, handles, bow rollers and hinges, all in polished Aisi 316 stainless steel, produced according to numerically controlled production processes. The company works in tandem with the boat builders to be sure the hardware perfectly matches the boat’s design.
Flap The Flexitab flap, as opposed to traditional trim tabs, has no upper hinge. A hydraulic piston regulates the compositematerial blade, allowing it to flex like airplane flaps. This means increased hydrodynamic efficiency and less drag. The hydrodynamic profile is thus much more efficient than a conventional tab and makes it possible to increase the vertical push without the inherent resistance of traditional flaps. It also allows one to trim the boat backwards by raising the bow: when the blade is drawn up, in fact, it curves in such a progressive line that the water is sucked up, generating a downwards force.

The lateral profile is characterized by a "frame" element which connects the canopy above the bridge with the base of the aft deckhouse, conferring upon the whole set-up a certain formal tension and re-evoking some stylistic features typical of the shipyard. The same aesthetic function is performed by the gunwale, which traces a curve down in the bow area and slopes gently to the rear. The boat has a single deck and was built with deck displacement hull made of steel and light alloy superstructure. The hull lines are equipped with a straight vertical bow which allows you to maximize waterline length, improving both the performance in terms of consumption and speed, and the volumes used for local service and technical spaces.

The 58M Displacement is based on research for spacious and comfortable interiors. Ideal for long cruises, it has an expected range of 5,500 nautical miles at 12 knots with two 2,040 Hp Caterpillar engines. Its profile stands out due to a perfect combination of shapes, with rectangular, trapezoidal and more rounded windows placed on the main deck and on the superstructure. Moreover, a linear cut supports the superstructure and runs almost parallel to the bow’s sloping line, as to "embrace" all decks up to the hardtop. Its interior follows a classic layout with fullbeam master cabin on the main deck and four guest cabins on the lower one.

The 46M Fast is made of aluminum and boasts stream lines that give dynamism to the boat, also shown by the trapezoidal hull which features long rectangular windows placed on two different levels. In addition the superstructure is compact and very aerodynamic, suited to high speeds (27 knots top speed). The bow has been designed to include even a helipad, increasingly demanded by megayacht owners. The stern, instead, is a large terrace overlooking the sea with enough room to
accommodate a large table and the sunbathing area. Inside there are four guest cabins on the lower deck while the master one is on the main deck and also has a wellness area, a dressing room and an office. The upper deck includes a sky-lounge with conversation area, the captain's cabin and the wheelhouse. The crew has four berths, galley and dinette placed on the lower deck.

With a length of 6.90 meters (without platform) and a beam of 2.50, it falls into the category of towable boats. The shipyard offers the possibility to implement electric motors. ing for the use of electric boats in rivers, lakes, and canals, and many owners are required to change the boats’ engines with something more suitable. With our range we are also able to satisfy this sector of the market and contribute to the well-being of nature,” stated Tjasa Luin Peric , delegated administrator of the shipyard.
For those with no need for the sleeping area and kitchen, Energy 23 will be available in the “open version” with a simple saloon. We have developed an alternative hardtop called Sliding Top: with a simple movement it is possible to slide the roof to the left or right and in this way adapt it to one’s own needs. It is at the moment manually adjustable.
“Energy 23 was born after the success of its little sister Energy 18, which was characterized by a remote-controlled hardtop. Our boats are the product of a synergy established over time. It is the combination of experiences and dedication that renders the use and maintenance even simpler.” Tjasa Luin Peric.

t is called Jolly Roger and it is the first "nautical" creation of the well known Milanese architects Ludovica and Roberto Palomba. In 1994, the couple founded the Studio
Palomba Serafini Associati developing architecture and organizing exhibitions worldwide. Over the years, they have received several international awards, including the Golden Compass, the Elle Decoration International Design Award, the Red Dot, the Design Plus, the Good Design Award and the German Design Award. There are also numerous prestigious brands whom they have worked with (Boffi, Brix, Driade, Foscarini, Poltrona Frau, Sawaya & Moroni, Samsung, Valli & Valli to name but a few) but they had never undertaken with the design of a mega yacht. As they themselves tell us, they started out with a Benetti 65 meters and then tried to work out the new boat according to more contemporary values compared to traditional ones, or focusing on nature and contact with the sea but never forgetting its main purpose: sailing. “This was your first project of a boat and at first glance it looks completely different from what we have seen so far in yachting. What was the key element that inspired you?” RP - We do not design boats, furniture, houses, skyscrapers or toothbrushes. Quoting Walter Gropius, as designers, we should be able to work on everything, from a spoon to a town. There is not much difference if the town sails or the spoon flies: it’s only the parameters of the project that (go to p. 68)

(from p. 66) change. The shipyard has given us a concept for Benetti Innovation and we have set a goal: to create a seaworthy object. It was not a mere exercise in style, we had to do something functional. The other goal was to create a relationship with the genius loci, that is to recover the relationship with the environment in which the object lives , keeping emotional relationships and empathy with the sea alive. As designers, we were inspired by those values that in our opinion a boat should have . On the semantic level, it should express a precise concept of elegance, intrinsically linked to lightness and speed. There is a feature that struck me more than others did, you have created an object that brings the owner very close to the sea, the sky, nature. In this case the boat is not a shelter from an element that may become dangerous, but it is an opening. RP - Today we have the right technology to do so. We only had an outline: the general plans for a Benetti 65 meter, and from there we started working without any external or historical influence. Have you had to give up any of your ideas? RP - Almost none, because in a year and a half we have often exchanged views with the shipyard designers, clarifying different situations. We have made choices on engineering and aesthetics levels in such a way that safety was not compromised. Another important aspect emerges from this project – the social aspect: a boat is no longer simply an instrument for oneself and a few friends, but is a place of large meetings that can accommodate many people. RP- The people who have access to this (go to p. 70)

(from p. 68) kind of a vessel today are young even if they are advanced in years. The real 40 year olds of today are the 50 year olds of yesterday. Today a 60 year old has strong social skills, wants to have fun and wants to live, to share his or her own space with people every nationality, on a Caribbean island for example. This is a boat which seizes contemporaneity and distinguishes itself from the more traditional vessel. Another new aspect is the use of external elements which change the whole connotation of the boat and transform it according to the place in which it is located. LP- We designed it as a single organism, as if it were a human body. We are physically equipped to determine characteristics which allow us to move our arms and assume a position occupying a small amount of space, or occupying a lot of it, but the body remains just that: a body. The vessel takes after this concept: the moment it stops moving, some of its capabilities increase. From the deck, one can access a small beach which opens up to give us immediate contact with the water. With this project, did you intend to respond to a specific demand or anticipate a new way to utilize the boat? RP- Our objective was to create an object in the sea, for the sea, and that was at the same time concrete. We verify our projects always starting from 3 premises: functional, aesthetic, and semantic. In terms of the last level, it had to communicate a state of diversity for a specific life choice: love and openness towards nature. Do you believe that the owner is really that mature? RP- No, not yet. LP- As a consumer, I appreciate differentiation (go to p. 73)

(from p. 70) and the opportunity to choose. Sometimes the market is in need of a proposal which is different from the current trend, and I have seen some intimidated companies. There is always a risk and a creative person will translate that risk in his own setting. It is true, boats all look the same, but I do not think that the same can be said of owners: one is different from the other. With regard to the materials that were considered for the construction of the interior and the finishing, did you integrate something innovative and different? RP- This boat is a tribute to the excellence of our country and we are carrying out precise research on made in Italy, which distinguishes us in the world. We would like the interior to feature all of the knowledge and the art of the profession. What did you think of this experience in the nautical world? RP- We hope that it will not be the last. We are truly enjoying working on boats and we would like to continue to express concepts that, in our opinion, are lacking in this sector. LP- Architecture is in and of itself embedded and cannot be moved. The boat, on the other hand, is different and mobile, like a car moving on the street. But can a vessel be architecture that navigates? Yes, because on board, where the real project of the designer is revealed, you really live. This is very stimulating and shifts the usual perspectives.

Concept Speedboat by Jaguar Cars To support the international launch of its new XF Sportbrake, the Jaguar car company has presented a 6-meter Concept Speedboat. The project aims to link classic lines with the tradition and speed of Jaguar.
The Concept Speedboat has a fiberglass hull with a carbon fiber gel coat finishing and natural teak decking. This is split by a carbon fiber fin, inspired by the iconic Jaguar D-Type. The
front of the boat flows seamlessly into the windscreen and the red 2+1 cabin is reminiscent of Jaguar’s sporty look. Jaguar Cars’ heritage is also subtly recalled with
fuel filler caps inspired by the Series 1 XJ. A polished aluminum propeller and pop-up mooring post imitates how the boat could be powered and docked respectively.
The new XF Sportbrake is the most versatile derivative of the award winning Jaguar XF to date. It represents a compelling combination of muscular yet elegant design, dynamic ability, contemporary interior luxury, with a loadspace capacity of up to 1675 liters, matching the XF sedan for aerodynamics and dynamic handling ability.

Polar 55
This Estonian-built sailboat, over 16 meters long with ample living and sleeping space, including three separate cabins, was recently featured at the Hamburg International Boat Show, Hanseboot. Designed by a company that specializes in semi-custom yacht construction, the 12-20 meter-long Polar 55 is a classic sailboat with a simple, linear style. The classically nautical interior design is comfortable and welcoming. The furnishings are mostly wooden interspersed with white and red upholstery. The round dinette table is surrounded by a leather sofa and chairs.
Below deck is a luxuriously appointed forward master cabin, complete with a flat-screen TV, and two identical aft cabins. The wheelhouse is adjacent to the galley and fully equipped (equipment by Furuno, Mastervolt, Harken and Maxpower). The two seats in this area can be converted to a six-person dining area.

wenty-six and a half carats of perfect roundness, smoothness and shine, in
one coat. This is La Pellegrina, the famous pearl that the legend holds equal to the Reine des perles, stolen from the crown jewels of France during the Borbon Empire. The Couach boatyard, founded by Albert Couach in 1897 and today managed by the fourth generation of his family, wanted to ambitiously give the same name to this 50 meter super yacht, because beyond the dimensions of the vessel itself, it is considered by the French brand one of the particularly well-made watercrafts, an evolution towards a model -unique, like a pearl - of modernity, performance and precision. The boat has 4 levels and offers 500 square meters of habitable area which can accommodate up to 12 guests in six cabins. The owner’s apartment is located on the upper deck, enjoys a private panoramic view and has at its disposal a personal terrace, a white-marble bathroom, a Hammam, and a big walk-in closet. The living room/dining room extends over 75 square meters with full-length glass windows which offer an unlimited view of the sea. The “preciousness” of the boat can also be found in its use of materials personally chosen by Pierre Fantini and Danielle Chopard, designer of the interior and decorator, respectively. For example, the pavement is covered in leather, the walls are made of sycamore wood and white lacquer, covered with chrome frames and polished stainless steel. The more one explores the ship the more one is exposed to selections of Italian marble, lacquer, and refined chrome and refined boiserie. On-board there also two kitchens (one to prepare cold dishes and another for hot meals), a bar with a bridge, and the unfailing Jacuzzi 6 places on the upper deck and various exercise equipment which serve to complete the on-board apparatus.
The glass windows in the living room offers a perfect view of the sea. White lacquer and sycamore cover the walls, while the pavement, just as throughout the whole boat, is distinctively covered in leather.

structed with materials aspiring to the quality of Kevlar with carbon reinforcements. The hull is therefore more crashresistant compared to aluminum or classic polyester. The boat is rigid and solid, but at the same time lightweight, in this way gaining speed and autonomy (a unit of this gross tonnage mobilizes a weight of only 296 tons). With its V-hull and two Mtu 5,300 hp engines, it reaches 30 nautical miles at full speed, remaining agile and maneuverable. But in addition to this, the economic speed also stands out with a highly reduced expenditure of energy, considering the mass: it consumes 180 litres an hour at 12 nautical miles, a pace which gives it transatlantic autonomy. Again, from an environmental perspective, La Pellegrina integrates high-performance equipment in wastewater treatment: so it is able to sailing in protectedsea areas.

But enough chit-chat, we set on the throttle and in about 20 seconds we skim. The Searex auto trim keeps the boat perfectly balanced and in an other 20 seconds we reach maximum

Hi-tech Heart The propulsion works thanks to two Mtu of 2,435 hp with Searex transmissions SR 140 S of ZF, coupled to the Rolla surface propellers. The propulsion system is completed with the Autotrim management, enhancing performance, assets, boat consumation for each trip and the loading status, all in automatic. The Pershing 82’ has been built with a vacuum millwork for different fiberglass components with quadri and bi axial fibres, whereas the bottom of the hull is layered by hand, with vinilester fiberglass. The walls are made of melted vacuumed vinilester fiberglass and a PVC closed cell core part. The deck, upper part and the main internal bulkheads are made with the same process (the rest are made in Okumè plywood). The longitudinal and diagonal backups of the hull, instead, are in sandwich polyurethane foam.

speed: 47.1 knots, even though the shipyard estimates a speed of 45 knots . The captain tells us to change course by 360°: we obey with the two engines Mtu 16 V 2,435 hp each and gps at 46 knots. We are all surprised, it seems as if the water level is reaching the side windows, as though submerged in a new dimension. The cohesion between form and function is found thanks to this manouver, where the need for contact between sea and sky becomes perfect with guaranteed safety and comfort: the phonometre measures 75.9 decibel at maximum speed. Once again designer Fulvio De Simoni and Andrea Frabetti, engineer at Ayt (Advanced Yacht Technology –Ferretti Group research and development department) have excelled with this contemporary refurbishment of the Pershing ’82. From the stylistic point of view the boat has not lost its sporty details due to the sun bridge, with the helm station that disappears, but is easily reachable by the carbon ladder, through the collaborative effort between Ayt and Besenzoni. The stern solarium is independent from the garage opening, equipped with a movable inferior portion to enable the entrance of a tender or a personal water craft. The main deck has another sunbathing area at the bow, with a dinette and an optional table. Below deck layout includes four cabins: the master en suite cabin in the middle of the boat , a vip en suite cabin at the bow and two guest cabins with twin beds at bow from the master cabin. These have a third bathroom, used as a day toilette and two crew cabins. They also have a laundry and are reachable from the saloon.

The livability of the boat is very good thanks to its height, always between 193 and 195 centimeters, except in the aft cabin, where the entrance, in any case, is over 190 cm. This cabin holds two twin berths that can be converted to a double.

P
ort Adriano in Palma de Mallorca seems to be a British colony. Even in
the height of August, under the burning sun, the tourists milling around have skin so white they seem to be lit up from the inside by fluorescent lights. The boat in the docks and the ensigns flying from the fly bridge or the transom are strictly British. We are here to try out the Portofino 40, the latest model from Sunseeker ship builders. And, appropriately enough, it has been moored in the typical English style. If it weren’t already nearly 90 degrees at nine in the morning, you might get a hankering to have fish and chips for breakfast and wash it down with that weak and watery stuff they call coffee (a far cry from espresso!). We climb aboard. There are two types of stern platforms available: a standard size that covers the two stern drives and an elongated one that also serves for hauling or launching a small dinghy. Nearly beam-width, it is three meters long, long enough to hold a pram of equal length. In the middle, the Besenzoni gangway also functions as a small davit, with a lifting capacity of 120 kilograms. The lowerable platform and davit-gangway make dinghy launching and hauling truly simple. The soft-top Bimini sunroof represents the perfect compromise between open and closed-deck solutions. Open, it lets you soak up the sun and feel the wind in your hair, but by closing it, by means of a simple electro-hydraulic device, the cockpit is well-protected from the elements, from rough seas, and from chilly temperatures. The U-shaped sofa is equipped with a reclining back. The aft deck holds an alfresco dining area with six chairs placed around a table which, when moved forward, becomes a headrest for stern’s sundeck. This same versatility
has not, however, been applied to the other sofa in the cockpit. It is linear, located portside in correspondence to the pilot’s seat and front facing. Designed for the co-pilot and passenger, it is comfortably set up for navigating. Its back is unfortunately immobile, which is a shame, really, because had it been designed with the possibility to move it forward, it would have made a great chaise-lounge to complete the cockpit salon. Getting to the bow is not the easiest, as the catwalks along the sides are quite narrow (23 cm), and you have to go up a couple of steps to access them. The sundeck located on the deckhouse is remarkable, not only for its size (196 x 195 cm), but also because the cushions don’t block the hatches that filter the natural light below deck. The interior is very bright also thanks to a semi-circular window situated between the pilot’s console and the base of the windscreen to illuminate the dinette. The livability of the boat is very good: ceiling height ranges between 193 and 195 cm in every room. The master cabin is located forward, while the aft cabin is below deck beneath the cockpit. Height is of course reduced here, but the entrance, at least, is over 190 cm. There is a twin guest cabin that can be converted to a double. What’s missing is a second head. There is only one bathroom, located forward and accessed either through the master cabin or the dinette. One area that makes excellent use of the available space is the engine room, located below the aft deck sofa/sun-lounge. Between the cushions and the engine room is a double stowage compartment big enough to stow all the fenders. An electro-hydraulic system lifts the floor providing easy access to the twin Volvo Penta engines, housed with ample space for comfortable maintenance. The two D6, 330 horsepower engines can be substituted for the more powerful D6, 400 horsepower models.

The sea at Palma de Mallorca in August is perfect for trying out the Portofino 40. As a cruise boat, maximum comfort should be guaranteed. The weather conditions are less than ideal, however: waves are nearly a meter high and the windy is gusty, as one would expect in the Baleares. Going full-throttle, the boat looks really sleek. The craft is comfortable, not buffeted by the waves. It remains dry, even when tacking, putting our seasickness resistance to the test. No sea spray comes over the windshield, even when the wind is blasting. Its acceleration is less than brilliant. The 400-horsepower would surely have been better, but with the 300 you have the advantage of lower fuel consumption. In exchange for being a few seconds slower on the throttle, you have a fuel consumption level of 133 liters per hour when travelling at maximum speed. Consumption at cruising speed drops 100 liters and idling is as low as 45 for both engines. Its fuel capacity, however, is rather low. The tank only holds 750 liters, so managing to cruise 200 miles before the next fill-up is tough. This creates a bit of a problem particularly if you want to get to Sardinia from the Baleares, a distance of just 200 nautical miles. She handles very well, with a smooth and easy rudder but which responds promptly to direction changes. At maximum speed she comes about in a decidedly tight circle, without a sense of losing contact with the water. She only needs about a 30-meter diameter to turn completely around. This bridge is very comfortable, although the visibility leaves something to be desired: the windshield is
extremely oblique, practically horizontal, and from the pilot’s seat the upper frame of the glass blocks the view of the horizon. Standing increases visibility, also because there is a teak duckboard that serves as a footrest and allows the helmsman to stand comfortably.

he title of a famous television programme is befitting and places the spot-
light on a product which is made entirely in Italy. We are talking about the 300 WA fisher, a model dedicated to game fishing, developed on the same structure of the Cruiser 300 WA.. It is almost entirely new from the helm station to the stern, and personalized for “anglers”. We carried out a first-ever performance test at Nautica Lieto (the dealer of Saver) in Gaeta, ten days before the Genoa Boat Show . Also present were engineers from Honda Marine, because the boat had been motorized with two 250 hp engines supplied by the Japanese company. First of all we visit the hull, starting from the bow: the area starts from the stainless steel handrail, with a break in the central part in order to allow access on board. This is the same point where the bow anchor winch is located and may be combined with the electric winch placed in the forepeak. A narrow corridor frames the deckhouse, where there is a sunbathing area as far as the windshield, which may also be used during navigation. Two steps take us to the cockpit and the helm station . There is a two-seater sofa. A stainless steel handrail allows passenger grip during cockpit transit. We turn around and find ourselves in the fishing area, the walking surface may be lined in either teak wood or carpet. This is a totally walkable area thanks to fish box tanks with overboard pump-out, and with moveable sofas on the stern bulwark, the system equipment is located underneath. The inner bulwarks have wooden pockets and rod holders, whilst there is space for built-in rod holders on the sides. To the right of the sofa is the tuna door allowing easy access on board from the stern and the loading of big prey. On the opposite side, in the quarter, is the live fish box, with an internal water-recycling system. Last-
ly, there’s a moulded platform that has a telescopic swim ladder and a shower on hose. By sliding the dark acrylate hatch door, we go down to the cabin area, where we find the galley; a sleeping area for guests under the access stairs, with a Queen-size and the master bed on the bow. Further ahead, between the bed and the bathroom, there is a sofa and a wardrobe above which is located the main electric panel.
Performance test We tried the boat’s maximum engine power of two 250 hp outboard. The transom carried a twin BF250, complete with propellers bearing a diameter of 15 inches and a pitch of 19 inches with three stainless steel blades. Furthermore, the Honda Marine engineers were able to fully calibrate the hull/engine combination, thus guaranteeing best results which we then verified directly in the water. There is a long wave, whilst the sky is initially sunny, becoming overcast as the performance test proceeds. The temperature is around 26 degrees and there is a slight breeze. The engines are interfaced with the Garmin instrumentation highlighting the EcoMo, the system used by Honda to indicate the best ratio between performance and consumption and, in our case, the system already startsup at 2,000 rpm, at 7.7 knots. At this pace the engines have
Regarding the interior, wood is used for all the particulars, whilst for the flooring a light-colour carpeting is utilized. The galley has a Corian worktop, a sink with mixer tap, double-burner stove, built-in refrigerator, a 22litre microwave oven, various lockers. The toilet room is furnished with a mirror, Corian worktop and a sink with mixer tap/shower cabinet and electric marine WC.

Isophthalic liquid resins were used to impregnate multidirectional strictly following the construction specifications, these are inserted as reinforcement between the shell and deck metal strut and rib in marine plywood covered with fiberglass and spheracor for the parts which are mostly subject to stress. The gelcoat is the neopentyl type. Over the last two years the shipyard has been proposing as an optional the possibility to personalize the colour of the stripe or the entire bulwarks. The hull has a transom deadrise (20°) and an advanced stempost, sliding floors equipped with two couples of rollers which cover the entire length.

an overall consumption of less than 18 litres per hour. The skimming phase starts from standstill in 4.5 seconds and is maintained up to the limit of 2,800 rpm at 15 knots. At 4,000 rpm we are still at full EcoMo capacity, we are navigating at 27.2 knots using 60 lt/h, whilst the last “economically viable” data is the combination of the speed at 32.7 knots and 80 lt/h at 4,500 rpm. From this point forward the performance increases but the fuel consumption, falls into second place. Therefore at 37 knots we use 106 lt/h;and at the maximum speed of, 44.2 knots at 6.000 rpm, with the trim of 50%, we use 166 litres per hour. At minimum speed using just one engine, it’s possible to tow at 1.5 knots. The hull shows an excellent racing “spirit” considering that the long-wave tends to make us lose contact with the water at times. A proper take-off never really occurs and, actually, the stability is always maintained parallel, with the rollers ready to “bite” the water when we forcefully change course at 35 knots. After various straightforward passages, leaving the waves first at the quarter, then at the loaf, the abeam and finally the bow, the 300 WA Fisher denotes a certain confidence with rough sea, supported by our consecutive passages along the waves of the tender and along our own waves produced in circles which become tighter and gain speed. The cross-section stability from a standstill is optimum, a further advantage for those who are keen on drifting or the bolentino, forced to stay still in water for long periods or to move around a lot, but slowly and with the risk of rolling.

fter the experience with the Flyer 750 and 850 models, Bénéteau has
thought of adding another design to the Cabrio range : the 650, which serves among other things to create a third alternative of the same length. In fact, the 650 Sun Deck and the 650 Open are already available in the catalogue, equal in terms of size and engines; in addition, the Cabrio offers high speeds and a certain predisposition for aquatic sports. The deck culminates at the prow with an open handrail and with a peak dedicated to the anchor, and offers the classic deckhouse design. The passage which leads to the steering well is wood decked, interrupted only by a manhole which illuminates and ventilates the lower cabin. The tempered glass windscreen with electro polished aluminium frame opens in the middle for forward access. The padded pilot’s seat revolves around 360 ° and has trans-
lation adjustment . On the opposite side the co-pilot can use a seat with a reversible back, Plexiglas cup holder, a glove box and a steel handrail. Behind the pilot's seat there’s a sink and shower on hose with an optional cooker support. There is a aft cockpit bench seat with cushions in PVC Diamante Storm Upholstery, with compartments underneath and headrests above. In order to obtain a relax/dining area, all you need to do is turn the pilot’s chair, and insert the table on its stand between the two bench seats. The sprayhood stowage space is in the back of the aft bench seat and acts as support for the headrest. As necessary, it is possible to remove a level and create a passage. Alternatively, those who come aboard from the stern can opt for a walkway on the side of the bar. Beside the cockpit, to the left we find small locker services with a stair-step and fender holders above; on the opposite side besides the specular fender holders, we find the swim ladder attached to the wood decked sun deck. From the steering console there is access to the cabin through a sliding door in translucent grey PMMA. It is a comfortable environment for two people to spend the night on board.
The Test We performed the test in Germany, during the international meeting organized by Suzuki which motorized the Flyer 650 Cabrio with the new DF140A. It isn’t the maximum engine power (200 hp), but it is in any case a solution able to satisfy most boaters’ demands, including the chance to practise water skiing. The water surface for the test is the end part of the river, and it is calm, while the pale sunlight appears every once in a while to then disappear behind

The collaboration of Bénéteau Power’s R&D department with Pierangel Andreani (Italian designer) has allowed the basis to be laid for the gamma Flyer, which the 650 Cabrio model is also part of. The mold is created with 3D design, and a 5-axis robot. The deck is in sandwich ,employing both polyester resins, fiberglass, and foam core. The hull counter moulding is laminated in monolithic with fiberglass and polyester resin. The hull on the other hand is realized with a system of injection with important environmental advantages. The decking is entirely covered with solid natural wood, while stainless steel is used for the construction of almost everything mettalic on board. The woodworks Alpi Mahogany enrich the inside areas. Of the options available there are some interesting packs such as the Dynamic one ,as well as pre-rigging available to almost all brands of outboard engines on the market. The hull is designed with a V-shaped prow flowing down towards the stern, and thedraught varies from a minimum of 40 to a maximum of 80 cm. The maximum engine power is 200 hp

numerous clouds. I climb on board for the dynamic test together with a Suzuki representative. On board we have 3/4 of fuel in the tank, which is to almost 105 litres. We slowly leave the docks where the Flyer is moored and I monoeuver the lever increasing the engine speed. At 2,800 rpm we are skimming, with the gps indicating a speed of 11 nautical miles which will also be the minimum speed to keep the hull out of the water. I have the trim below, and continue to stimulate the lever reaching 3,500 rpm quite quickly, with a speed increase of almost two nautical miles. In order to reach 20 nautical miles I must push another 20 rpm and arrive at 4,000 rmp. From here on besides pressing the lever I begin to play with the trim bringing it to 30% of its course. At 5,000 rpm we are gliding at 27.3 knots with consumption at 22 litres per hour, while the maximum speed is reached at 6,250 rpm equal to 34 knots, with total consumption of 49 litres per hour. The Flyer 650 Cabio is funny to drive but you have to pull the pilot seat all back otherwise if you drive standing up you can lose the tilt ergonomics of the steering wheel.
Optional equipment ( exc.VAT ) The 650 Cabrio is designed as a “glamourous” and sporty project. Its prerogatives are speed and the duty for all sport activities, also including water skiing.

On board the Voyager 18S priority is given to daytime use and in terms of space, attention was focused above all on seating and sunbathing areas. It integrates many characteristics of the bigger models, including the deck layout which distinctly separates the three areas of the boat: prow, helm station and aft seating area. The latter proposes a comfortable access which allows one to easily reach the engine or the moulded platforms . The bench seat fits two or three people with an enveloping, removable cushion, which allows access to the locker where the systems pass through and where a flexible fuel tank can also fit, if preferred over the permanent optional ones. The edge of the locker is raised so as to avoid involuntary entrance of wastewater. At the foot of the bench seat, two high flow scuppers ensure rapid removal of wastewater. The pilot’s seat is central and can revolve towards the sofa, converting the whole set up into a relax/dialogue area. The console is rather wide, leaving at the same time the access from both sides. The stainless handrail engulfs it so as to offer the pilot a solid grip, while the clear colored windscreen enables one to maintain visual control even while driving seated. The upper floor is equipped with a screen-printed dashboard and can accommodate the principal equipment of the engine in addition to three switches with fuse. Laterally, there is a floor for a plotter and an eco sounder bracket. The steering wheel is three spoke sports powered by mechanical steering and located on the left, while on the right first we find a lever and then a drawer. The console also comes with cabin through an abs door set below. The bow area includes a fixed base, at the center of which a diving suit locker can be found in addition to a removable base for sunbathing.

The test We carried out the test with a Honda BF40. We have only 30 lites of fuel on board, we don’t have water, and there are only two of us. The engine combines a three blade propeller measuring 11 ? x 12, which will allow us to reach 6,000 rpm with the trim regulated at 40% of its total stroke. Notwithstanding the “contained” horsepower the Voyager 18S is agile and it only needs a bit more then 3.5 seconds to skim, performed without pulling up. The lower limit of this structure that we will verify at the end of the test will establish that the skim is maintainable up to 4,000 rpm and 11 knots. It is agile given its dimensions and stable
Here above is the side aft access which leads to the telescopic steel swim ladder. Below is the central seat with screenprinted console. Under the pilot seat (to the left), there is an insulated compartment equipped with central scupper, also usable as a tank to conserve fish caught.

thanks to the use of the His keel. Furthermore, the hull glides well on water and exceeds with a certain ease even waves addressed by the bow, assuring good results and safety even for beginners. The vessel changes course simply yet softly maintaining a good adherence to the water at the stern, which does not change even if we close the turn. Visibility is good even while seated, thanks to the transparent windsreen that does not obscure the depth of field, however at high speed we advise steering while standing, and especially to always fasten the security detachment which inhibits the operation of the engine iif ones falls into the water. At full speed we reached a speed just touching 25 knots, which leaves us only guessing what its reachable potential is with greater power, a solution aimed at who ever holds a license and for who ever has specific loading needs or racing ambitions.

The hull composition forsees the use of orthocircle dienic penta resins (supplied by the Dsm) which develop base emissions (therefore also environmentally friendly), rigorously stratified by hand on rush matting in Ranieri International shipyards. The keel on the other hand is produced by stratifying vinylster resins by hand with humidity resistance significantly superior to isophthalic. The gelcoat is “eco”, to which protections of atlac and coat are added. Longerons and athwartships are placed between the shell and the deck to ensure structural reinforcement. The technical construction of the hull is completed with materials such as pvc and wood for the seats, foam core to realize the interior of cushions and the sky for the outside. The handrails , the cleats and the swim ladder are stainless made. The keel adopts the His system (Hull innovative system), which foresees a diagonal redan with the goal of reducing friction in speed and amplifying the stability of the hull even in rough seas, guaranteeing ease of navigation following the natural exchange of water with airin that area during high speed navigation.

et’s face it. This is not the best time for boating in Italy and it is certainly not for
the shipbuilding sector either. Yachtsmen are always fans, but it is really hard to think of buying a new boat. What should a boatyard do? Bravely think of intercepting new boaters. That’s why the Bavaria Cruiser 33 was created, designed and engineered as an entry level or as the ideal boat for an owner who does not want to complicate his life. Maybe they already have a bigger sailing boat, but they’re looking for a new hull, easy to use and inexpensive. First of all, Cruiser 33 is a floating boat. Certainly it’s not the tax which is worrying and it has fewer expenses than biger boats. Plus, the Bavaria styling has been for many years, the quality/price ratio. For over 20 years the production has been organized to benefit the automation systems. Maximum accuracy, few errors, reduced times. The result is a boat that is not going to deteriorate slowly. A boat that doesn’t drive the owner insane with frequent maintenance. Another advantage
The interiors have been treated by Design Unlimited: simple but carefully refined and above all with plenty of space. On the left there is the dinette and in the round, there is the stern cabin which has a height of 192 cm. On the right-hand page at the top, the dinette again taken from another angle, below the kitchen and the forward V-berth.

of such a r vessel is that time does not depreciateit at lightning speed. We can already imagine the objection of "Bavaria skeptics" because of the poor quality finishes and unappealing details. The Cruiser 33 we tested was waiting for us at the dock moored in Andora. We were in no hurry so we took some time to look at the interior before casting off. Thanks to the English Design Unlimited that oversaw the set up,the "Bavariaskepticks" need to find new reasons to complain, because finishes and details seem well done The first thing we liked is the natural light; there is a lots of it, because in addition to the traditional portholes on the sides and the transparent hatch, the deck has several windows and hatches. Another example of good attention to details is the bathroom setting. There is only one, of course, and rather large, 185 cm in height. The sink is hidden behind the door. This solution allows more free space to move within the local and wider area dedicated to the shower. Of course, there is a drawback, because to use the basin, you must first close the bathroom door, but we can also say that in general, as a rule of behavior and coexistence, it is preferable not to go to the bathroom leaving the door wide open. Ultimately, the interior spaces are appreciated for the dimensions. (go to p. 119)

The Bavaria Cruiser line is made with traditional materials, like fiberglass. Hulls and water lines projects are all from Farr Yacht Design. Bruce Farr is one of the "pencils" best known in the sailing world with a lot of experience in the racing field. The construction relies on a high automation level guaranteed by CAD CAM software, by the numerical milling and by robotic systems present in the pipeline. These technologies allow to minimize the errors during the boat realization.

We are aboard a vessel and yet the stern cabin entrance has a height of 192 cm and a width of 175 cm which means that this is a real queen-sized bed. The other cabin is in the bow. Here the height has to be lower and goes down to 177 cm. The V-berth is 180 cm wide at the head and then down to 40 cm height of the feet. A lot of space is available to stow dishes and clothes in general. Outside, the side decks measures 34 cm and are completely cleared out, because the shrouds are fixed on the sides of the hull, leaving the walkway free. The cockpit ends with a folding stern platform. It is very easy to lower or close it thanks to the hoist. It measures almost a meter in length. While sailing, also, the aft platform edge falls slightly and serves as a seat for the helmsman. This solution means that those who lead the boat have a "bench" that occupies almost the entire beam. They can sit in any place, starboard, to the left or in the center and keep an eye on the genoa. There is no mainsail traveller. The hoist is attached to the steel handrail that defines the cockpit table on the aft. The good thing is that the mainsheet’s postponement doesn’t fall on the floor so it’s not in the way when you are moving in the cockpit. The only thing to be aware of is that during the gybe, the boom can fall on your head and the mainsheet can hit you in the neck. The only thing that didn’t satisfy us about the deck was the bowsprit location.
While it is definitely a cruise boat it does not lack in performance, both under sail and motor engine.

The winch position of the sheets is ideal: they are quite close to the helmsman, but not too much, so if it’s a member of the crew that must trim or ease out, they can do so without having to put hands and head between the spokes of the steering wheel.

Cruiser 33, in fact, also has a gennaker that uses the Selden’s retractable bowsprit to be reinforced. In rest position, it is close to the bow and therefore does not protrude. The problem is that it takes up a little space near the bow cleats and when you have tie down the trappist monastery, for example, it can be difficult. The bowsprit, however, does not thwart the anchor because the nose is located to starboard so there is a jib furler that divides the spaces for both. Usually, for a sailboat good use of space and plenty of room means poor performances. Moving away from the pier we try the engine, which is a 30 HP Volvo with foot sail drive. The maximun speed is more then 7 knots, but even staying in a cruisin speed this is between 5.3 knots at 2000 rpm and 6.4 knots at 2500 rpm. A remarkable performance that allows you to move quickly even with the engine. When we raise the mainsail and unroll the genoa, the wind is actually about 8 knots. With this pressure, upwind, downwind and crosswind, the speed of the Cruiser 33 is slightly less than 5 knots. We try abeam and slack also with gennaker. Performance improves and yet, even if the wind speed is decreased, the hull speed increases more than what the GPS had recorded in white sails. In conclusion, comfort, good use of space, performance and easy management, are not lacking at all.

The power of the network Located in Puglia, Italy, in the Gulf of Manfredonia, this project is part of an international network of 22 marinas and boatyards managed by the Mdl Marinas Group in Great Britain, Spain and Italy by Nicoletta The Mdl Marinas Group, together with Gespo S.r.l., has presented the new location Marina del Gargano and the company concept: promoting wandering nautical tourism through a network of facilities scattered across Southern Europe, guaranteeing clients the same level of quality services and standards at every marina of the Mdl Network. Gianni Rotice, President of Gespo S.r.l. in Puglia and financer and builder of the marina, says: “The work is now 85% finished and will be ready by March 2013, while opening to the public will follow in April. It all began as a development project for our region, whereby small and medium-sized local companies have taken on the 122

Jon Eads, Chief Operating Officer of Mdl Marinas and President of Mdl-Marina del Gargano, explains: “Our aim is to turn the Mediterranean into a

Fort Lauderdale boat show
The show must go on... … and so it did, despite hurricane Sandy, which struck Florida just when the Boat Show
was scheduled, forcing the organizers to evacuate the area on the first day.Although there were plenty of visitors the following day, 2013 is expected to be even better
Sailors come from all over the world to attend this much-anticipated event, the last one in the year, where boat builders and related industries can show what’s new for the following year. Covering an area of 280 thousand square meters, divided into six sectors, with about 1200 exhibitors, the Show was expecting tens of thousands of visitors. But the arrival of the hurricane decidedly lowered expectations and dampened spirits. Opening day was particularly difficult. The gates were
closed early and several booths damaged due to Sandy, further crashing hopes already crippled by the troubled inauguration. Fortunately, the second day, despite the “tail” of the storm, things gradually got better till finally it was sunny for the weekend, which encouraged visitors to come. On the third day a meeting of the international associations was held, hosted by ISS (International Superyacht Society) with the support of MIASF (Marine Industries Association of South Florida) and USSA (US Superyacht Association). Initiatives for relaunching the global yachting industry by means of regional and international programs were discussed. By the time the event was over, most of the boat builders were pleased with the turn-out and according to Dane Graziano, vice president of Show Management (the organizers of this event), “It is fair to say that this has been a fabulous edition, considering the weather we had on the first day. By the second day the docks were already crowded with visitors. Saturday and Sunday we managed to reach the same number of visitors we had in 2011.” “In spite of weather conditions, optimism was running high,” declared MIASF’s president, Kristina Hebert.
USA,on the road to recovery No one is ready to claim 2012 as the Year of Recovery, particularly in the megayacht sector where sales continue to decline, but certainly this past year has given some signs that the economy may be on the rebound: some companies claim to have seen the best sales in five years in 2012, even if, as everyone knows, the numbers will not reach 2007 levels. According to statistics published by the NMMA (National Marine Manufacturer Association), total boat sales in 2012 rose by 14%. This figure, however, contains many oscillations and a great deal of instability. Aluminum boats longer than 16’ rose by 21% while inboards by only 1%;

Vessels are perfect for visiting the British Virgin Islands and enjoy some of the most beautiful natural landscapes. This archipelago consists of 40 islands in the Caribbean Sea, wonderful beaches of fine white sand, lapped by turquoise waters. Only a few are inhabited. This ancient area was once appreciated by pirates, including the famous Blackbeard. Those who wish to venture across the seabed will be surprised by a much varied marine life. The most spectacular point is White Bay, reachable through a narrow channel which cuts in half the reef. Anegada is the only coral atoll of the BVI and owes its name to the fact that its highest point reaches just 8 meters, which made it somewhat difficult to be seen and its reef and over the centuries it has caused about 300 shipwrecks. For this reason, it is a paradise for divers looking for Spanish galleons and sunken treasures.

Glimpses of the 20th Century “In the year 1918, just after Finland’s declaration of independence, a civil war will break out”. This is the vision of Linnea Lindemen, fisher, seal hunter, midwife, shaman and soothsayer. In the same year Antti Kokkoluoto is born, a man destined for extraordinary deeds, a hotblooded hero with nerves of steel whose existence will endure all the past century, to pass away only on July 12th, 1990. Relying on a life long prophecy, Antti will daringly launch himself into the most exciting adventures, from horse dealer to bootlegger, from trader to brave soldier. With the crises of the thirties, as a setting struggles between fascists and communists, the Winter War and other conflicts, a bizarre circle of patriots, anarchists and rebels of everyday life, the tragicomic story of a common family becomes the key to understanding hopes and fears of a population overwhelmed by one of the most complicated histories of the past century. We are in the year 1925 and the protagonists are four 20 year old friends who leave Marsiglia heading for Greece on a sailing boat. They are on board of Bonita, an old yawl without an engine. Hermine de Saussure, heart of the group and captain, has decided to live out her youthful ideals . Ella Maillart, ship’s mate, will go through an experience which will make her a writervoyageur known all over the globe. Marthe Oulié, author, voyageur and archeologist will visit great part of the world just like Mariel Jean-Brunhes, geographer, future ethnologist and humanitarian activist. Following Omero’s footsteps, they will land on islands still unknown to mass tourism. Tale of discoveries, cruise of abiding evocations, this volume is the testimony to a liberating experience under the sun of Greece. Marthe Oulié, Bonita Crew, 2012, Magenes Editoriale, Milan, € 15,00
Piracy, chronicles and biographies of the past A fascinating book with a story as ancient as the one it’s telling. It was the year 1724 when in Charles Rivington’s bookshop in London a little octavo volume appeared for the first time. The author, a certain Captain Johnson was a complete stranger but the book title made him immediately charming: “A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pirates”. This book inspired our idea of the pirate and his nautical life, a figure between history and legend. Names like Captain Kidd or Blackbeard emerge from these pages like phantoms, creating one of the most exciting stories about the Gold Age, piracy and buccaneers. This is the first great tale about the lives of seamen, short but eventful lives: continuous adventures, full of mishaps, in an era when the world was young and the sea was often, a great stranger. Captain Charles Johnson, A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates 2012, Cavallo di ferro, Rome, € 18,50
