HOUSE OF FAFETU

Design Studio C (Immersion)

Instructors: Ursula Chandler

Creating a refugee place as a safe space for people, sea animals and coral reefs in Funafuti responds to the issue of extremely natural disasters like sea-level rise and flooding which can happen anytimes. With my intention, this place will maintain their indigenous spirit and local lifestyle from the past till nowadays as long as possible. Moreover, this project is also going to push the infrastructure, cultural, traditional, economics and politics of Tuvalu to be more forward through the advantage of creating a space through this building.

In the meaning of Fafetu, it is the traditional crocheted patterns of polynesia by Lakiloko Keakea. Her technique in crocheting to create Fafetu impacts the traditional weaving of Tuvalu to be more well-known and also represent how the industrialization in Tuvalu develop the way art is produced.

From her stories and reputation, she inspires me to design an architectural building for the Tuvaluan community to be an opportunity area which can be represented as the symbol of freedom to work freely and the huge movement in their infrastructure and economics.

In the part of design, creating the floating platform which is for people who come to doing work, commercial activities and spiritual activities like cooking, fishing, crafting, handicraft and recreation activities will push the development of their society through cultural, traditional, economics, industry, infrastructure, political and tourism.

Next, allowing an underground space to be a storage for keeping equipment like fisheries and handicraft, keeping local materials for building houses like coconut leaves and pandanus and keeping food like meat and coconut milk will make the industry and food security of Tuvalu become more sustainable.

SCA(R)F-SKIN

Our bodies have outer skin to keep our habits Buildings have scaffoling to preserve their identities ’

The quote under the title of my project links to my concept of using prefabricated wireframe structure as a scaffolding system with natural waste as banana fiber to maintain the characteristics of old buildings which are corroded and ruined continuously every year.

With the renovation and repairing of building systems continuing and no way to stop, my invention with the material of banana fiber that has an advantage to support the good resistance to fire and storms which are involved in natural disasters will have a duty to protect their construction in these situation.

My project aims to collaborate with old city management plan organizations in any area of our countries to maintain and preserve our historical buildings or constructions for our next generation in the future such as developing community companies, creativity design institute and any government organization. For example, 4 places which are given in this slide are Bangrak Fire Station in Bangkok, Old Phuket Town, Street Art in Songkhla and Tha Phae Gate in Chiang Mai.
