INTI celebrates her 25th birthday! Wow - INTI has been producing handmade knitwear for 25 years! We look back at the earliest stages, in which we adventurously went to the library and opened up an Atlas to a random page, to now: closely working together with over 700 different local Ecuadorian craftswomen who knit for INTI. After a quarter of a century of working both in South America and the Netherlands, today we’re mostly surrounded by familiar yet fascinating aromas, colours, vistas and faces. The production process of your beloved knitwear is a huge team effort, in which we all benefit. We gather stories and translate these into beautiful garments – us bringing our big ideas and our knitting family throwing in their patience, technical eye and devoted skills. Sometimes people ask us whether we feel strange about life in two different countries, two different cultures. We’ll ponder for a second, then go, no. Because we share this experience together, every place feels like home! Growing our business in Ecuador has brought us a close-knit society, full of family feasts, funerals, communions and everyday Otavalo life. We’ve seen the children of our friends grow up, and they have seen INTI flourish. After 25 years, we’re similar to the people we were when we started – just a tad wiser (we hope), but as adventurous and caring. Somewhere between baby alpaca and windmill, INTI has grown up and settled itself comfortably.

Abrazo! and to unbelievable teamwork! Anna Cales & Leon van den Broek

Diana (still pregnant in this picture) is our savior in so many ways. Besides knitting, she checks the knitting samples, takes care of the studio and is a joy having around. In July she gave birth to her son Alexis. Sweater Cordoba MY1829 Girasol 7

It's all about teamwork.

The INTI work place in Ecuador proudly works with a big team of loyal craftswomen. Together with founders Anna and Leon, these driven ‘lead-knitters’ discuss the process, from pattern to button type. Then, instructions are passed on to their more than 700 local knitters, who work from home. One of these knitting women will craft your INTI garment by hand, with the utmost care and precision. We provide a tag with the name of your knitter and the production number of the – sometimes limited item. So, who are these skilled ladies? Our factory is located opposite a volcano – when it’s sunny, it’s hot in town! Still, the local women

prefer to wear their alpaca woollen sweaters on a daily basis, rain or sun. They work from the little villages in the region, wandering through the streets, always knitting. The men in their lives aren’t around much – they work in the big cities and only come home on the weekend. Social life in the small north-Ecuadorian town consists of knitting, calling, knitting, walking, calling, knitting, eating, knitting, laughing. Cause these women, they love to laugh! On some days, they take the bus to INTI’s work place and arrive with bags full of garments, or to receive new wool. Everyone stays for lunch – arroz, pollo

y frijoles – and there’s no stopping the jokes and the chatter. Their short, characteristic appearances surrounded by small children, holding bags of fresh corn and clutching their telephones to always keep in touch: our knitters are the biggest familyoriented people we know! From the humour with which the women arrive to the workspace, to the joy they express when we ‘re all cooking together. Life in these mountains is probably not always easy. We’re proud to have our Ecuadorian ‘knit-stars’ devoting their time and expertise to INTI!

Washing instructions. Wool is self-cleaning. After wearing, hang it out to air. We wash wool at 0 degrees in the washing machine on the wool cycle, and we also use the wool spin cycle. (Of course it is possible to hand wash too, but why hand wash when the result is just as good when using the machine?) If hand washing, make sure that you are using a sufficient amount of water. Also, don’t rub the material in the water; this can be avoided by using the right amount of water. Don’t spot clean; always wash the whole garment, not just the part that has the stain. Use a pH neutral detergent, or preferably a special wool washing detergent. Wash different colors separately. Do not use bleach! When rinsing, make sure that the temperature of the rinsing water is the same as the washing water. Never hang or lay a wool garment to dry when it is saturated in water. Try to remove as much of the water as possible and don’t lay it out on anything that absorbs moisture (such as a towel). Colors might run and the natural elasticity of the garment may deteriorate. Never put wool in the tumble dryer! (Unless the object is to make it into felt). When ironing, use a steam iron, or put a moist protective sheet between a regular iron and the woolen surface. Pilling and balling of your purchase is perfectly normal. To remove pilling, and keep your item looking fresh and recently bought, we recommend using a wool comb or a product like the Sweater Stone. It is natural and uses no chemicals or batteries.

Precious scarfs.

The multicolour scarf is the most sustainable item in our collection. The idea for this scarf arose from the wish to recycle our leftover wool. Remainders from all the colours of wool we have used in our past collections are incorporated in these scarves. The wool is still hand-woven in a traditional manner that preserves its characteristic structure. Weaving is a labour-intensive process: INTI’s weaving takes place at Fabian and Elsa’s weaving shop in Ecuador. Fabian warps and weaves a wide range of colours on the loom. When the weaving is finished, he combs the scarf with a large teasel. This creates an astonishing effect: the resulting blend of colours is always a pleasant surprise. 37

Made by sisters. Sisterly love. Praised and described in all languages, its true strength can be sensed in the everyday life of South American existence. The more sisters a family has, the tighter the family bonds are. Take these sisters Mercedes, Olga and Teresa, together with daughter Shyla. They epitomize INTI Knitwear, these sisters of the world. They are a symbol of sisterhood and tight solidarity. They are one another’s friends. But also one another’s colleagues, carers, mother and daughter. In groups from four to many they knit and embroider our collection. With heart and soul they are linked to nature, to each other, to their community and to us. We now know them so well, these hermanas. We feel connected with them as they are with each other. So considerate and helpful. It’s heart-warming every time when we eat together, work together, simply be together. We honour them and what they stand for, which is why their first names are on the labels of the garments they produce: made by Mercedes.

Summer collection 2019.

Next year we will launch a small summer softwear collection. The characteristics of baby alpaca wool (warm in winter, cool in summer) combined with a more loose, open knit and it’s soft touch to the skin will be your new must have for summer 2019.
