he rare baby Alpaca wool was seen as sacred in Inca times, only worn by the noble classes. Alpaca wool was next to godliness, it was even called the “wool of the gods”. Its soft-silkiness, is long-wearing quality and general sensuousness was-out-of-this-world. So it’s understandable that we simply love it, too. Peruvian alpacas have been our loyal suppliers at Inti for the last twenty-one years, surely to continue providing our main source of yarn. In fact, in 1993 we - Anna and Leon - found ourselves in a love affair with Ecuador. Our travels around South America introduced us to an infatuation for latino food, music and textiles. And the rest is Inti history. We found a way to marry our own affection for a country and its neighbouring lands, and the people. When one is in love – as in, the way we love our work, products and the people we work with - you simply accept that you might start off with modest beginnings but you keep going - in sickness, health, through economic crashes and riding the booms. Our love for what we do borders on faith. In fact, one of the things we do a lot of, particularly when travelling around South America, is look at the sky for … for what? For inspiration, for colour, for the beauty we see mirrored there. To remind us of what we believe in. We believe in the families and communities of Ecuador and Peru; we help bring their hard work and skill to appreciators far beyond the borders of the Southern skies and horizon.
We believe in the superior quality of Peruvian alpaca wool. And we believe in the good news sustainability story behind our business. We give thanks every time we are in South America that we have had the chance for more than two decades to do this as our day job! If you like wool, you will just adore our beautifully soft merino and alpaca wool. If you enjoy treating your eyes to colours and pattern, intriguing stitches and learning about interestingly connected communities, then they will definitely be satisfied after feasting on our magazine. Then, when they have had their fill, turn your windows-to-the soul skywards, and give thanks for all you have seen, been and have … and feel blessed for whatever you will see, become and have in future (perhaps the owner of a new Inti garment, who knows?)

Every year, on the third day, Sra. Imelda arrives. This angel of a knitter, Sra. Imelda, comes from Cuenca, in the south of Ecuador. At least once a year she takes a three day bus-ride right through the middle of Ecuador to reach our place, up north. With the patience of a saint she diligently studies the new season Inti designs, so she knows them literally insideand-out. Only once she fully understands the job she has to do, she takes the samples back with her – three days on the bus once more – to her group of knitters where she can confidently explain to them each and every detail of each and every stitch. This sense of pride in workmanship is what goes into every single Inti garment. For this we feel heaven blessed.

THE KNITTERS OF ZULETA
I
n Ecuador’s beautiful province of Imbabura is a lovely hacienda, called Zuleta. It assures visitors it is their “home away from home”. Up in the north of the country, rolling meadows and majestic mountains abound for visitors and locals to explore on foot, by bike or horseback. The air is clean and everywhere you see people who are vibrant and full of life. In this region, community-based tourism vision is very strong. It is at this hacienda where some of our most talented Inti knitters are based; their great skill in traditional embroidery is second to none. Donna Imelda Benitez is the nurturing leader of our ‘Zuleta knitters’, and she’s shown here teaching everyone the knitting stitches and gives guidance to her friends and colleagues with their embroidery technique, too. THE ROYAL ALPACA What a wonderous creature is the alpaca, a camelid native to South America. Not to be confused with its relative the llama (who is twice the size and has curved banana-shaped ears) - oh no! The petite alpaca has straighter, smaller ears and has been carefully bred and domesticated for its luxurious single-layer coat for no less than 6000 years, its fibre fit for royalty. Alpaca fleece comes in white, cream and beige, and brown all the way to black - with even grey and red-grey or silver-grey tints in between. Similar to fine merino (sheep) wool, alpaca wool is warmer, less prickly, contains no lanoline (making it hypoallergenic) and is naturally water and fire-resistant. (Now thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one amazing, technicolour dreamcoat).

The spectrum of yarn Inti yarn comes into being through a natural, spontaneous, loving process; the colours are earthy, inspired by the beautiful landscapes of so many South American countries. The combination of colour comes together by chance – whatever catches Anna’s eye during her travels and then she describes what has impressed her to the farmers and dyers, who then translate her story into offering her the right base wool matched with a colour palette that covers a far more sophisticated spectrum than the rainbow. The notion to make wool and make it all these beautiful colours seems to leap out of the southern sky and land, right into Anna’s head; but in the end it is the sum of the hard work of so many people: the farmers, the shearers, the spinners, the colour-masters and the dyers. And then finally, those fabulous knitters.

MATE DE COCA: GOOD FOR FRIENDS, BODY AND SOUL
Y
erba mate is a tea-like beverage widely consumed in South America, particularly northeastern Argentina, Bolivia, southern Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. It has many different names and in Ecuador it’s called ‘mate de coca’. Let’s just call it mate for now. In South America, people drink mate together sort of the way Europeans and other Westerners catch up over tea or coffee. However, there is quite a ritual around sharing this drink. It goes something like this. 1. You have to be either family or really good friends to be invited to drink mate. So, if you find yourself invited to share a gourd* of mate, you should take this as a compliment of the highest order. 2. The host, or brewer, provides the gourd containing mate (or thermos or kettle), and will be the one who prepares and refills it with hot water. 3. Guests are seated in a circle and the gourd is passed around, clockwise, starting with the brewer. This first brew is often bitter; the brewer then refills the gourd and passes it to his or her left. Each guest finishes the gourd before giving it back to the brewer. Mate can be rebrewed many times, so the gourd is passed until the water runs out or the mate has lost its flavour. 4. When you feel you’ve had enough mate, you say gracias (thank you) to the brewer when returning the gourd to signify you do not want any more the next round. The health properties of mate de coca are many. It is nutritious, rich in vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. It contains mateine, a milder variant of caffeine. It is believed to strengthen the immune system, clean the blood of toxins, strengthen the nervous system, prevent ageing, fight fatigue, give you a mental boost, limit your appetite, help with weight-loss, stress and insomnia. In cold weather, yerba is served hot, but in warmer weather it is typically served as a substitute for lemonade, so is drunk cold. Children often drink yerba with lemonade. Some people might see sharing the same drinking vessel as somewhat unhygienic, but the fact that it is shared is what makes mate such an intense experience. You share mate with those with whom you would share your very soul!
* Yerba is Spanish for ‘grass’ or ‘herb’ and mate comes from the Indian language, Quechan, where matia means the container or gourd containing the yerba. The ‘gourd’ is also called a bombilla, and is also referred to as mate itself.

WASHING INSTRUCTIONS

any people shy away from woolen garments because they don’t know how to care for them. As a producer of woolens, we can advise how best to take care of your precious purchase, and reassure you that it is not any extra work than taking care of your lingerie and other delicate clothing! To make sure that your garment stays as gorgeous as the day you bought it, it’s important to bear in mind the following:
WOOL IS SELF-CLEANING. AFTER WEARING, HANG IT OUT TO AIR. DON’T SPOT CLEAN; ALWAYS WASH THE WHOLE GARMENT, NOT JUST THE PART THAT HAS THE STAIN. WASH DIFFERENT COLORS SEPARATELY. DO NOT USE BLEACH! WE WASH WOOL AT 0 DEGREES IN THE WASHING MACHINE ON THE WOOL CYCLE, AND WE ALSO USE THE WOOL SPIN CYCLE. (OF COURSE IT IS POSSIBLE TO HAND WASH TOO, BUT WHY HAND WASH WHEN THE RESULT IS JUST AS GOOD WHEN USING THE MACHINE?) IF HAND WASHING, MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE USING A SUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF WATER. ALSO, DON’T RUB THE MATERIAL IN THE WATER; THIS CAN BE AVOIDED BY USING THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF WATER. USE A PH NEUTRAL DETERGENT, OR PREFERABLY A SPECIAL WOOL WASHING DETERGENT.
WHEN RINSING, MAKE SURE THAT THE TEMPERATURE OF THE RINSING WATER IS THE SAME AS THE WASHING WATER. NEVER HANG OR LAY A WOOL GARMENT TO DRY WHEN IT IS SATURATED IN WATER. TRY TO REMOVE AS MUCH OF THE WATER AS POSSIBLE AND DON’T LAY IT OUT ON ANYTHING THAT ABSORBS MOISTURE (SUCH AS A TOWEL). COLORS MIGHT RUN AND THE NATURAL ELASTICITY OF THE GARMENT MAY DETERIORATE. NEVER PUT WOOL IN THE TUMBLE DRYER! (UNLESS THE OBJECT IS TO MAKE IT INTO FELT). WHEN IRONING, USE A STEAM IRON, OR PUT A MOIST PROTECTIVE SHEET BETWEEN A REGULAR IRON AND THE WOOLEN SURFACE. PILLING AND BALLING OF YOUR PURCHASE IS PERFECTLY NORMAL. TO REMOVE PILLING, AND KEEP YOUR ITEM LOOKING FRESH AND RECENTLY BOUGHT, WE RECOMMEND USING A WOOL COMB OR A PRODUCT LIKE THE SWEATER STONE. IT IS NATURAL AND USES NO CHEMICALS OR BATTERIES.
