The INTI shawl A product to our heart

Our beautiful authentically woven shawl is made from a diverse selection of types (and colours) of leftover wool. Because of this production, a lovely family was able to buy a terrain facilitating their weaving factory - and send their 7 little boys to school.

INTI is all around us

Landscapes are a form of art we are inspired by every day. From our ‘house’- volcano across the road to the green luscious mountains around us, we are happily operating from a stunning bit of nature. But INTI is not only Ecuador. The inspiration for our collections can also be found in the deserts of the United States, the shapes of Chilean cacti and the colours of the markets in southern Peru.

Anna Cales & Leon van den Broek Founders of Inti Knitwear

Connecting Ecuador to the world What do you do when you crave a life outdoors, surrounded by unfamiliar bird song and the native families that have become your home? You go to the library, pick up an Atlas and let it fall open to a random page. At least – that’s what designer Anna and production manager Leon did 27 years ago. Our passion for travelling the world, meeting new locals and learning from these people’s crafts and ways of life led us to the mountains of Ecuador, where we’ve been running INTI Knitwear successfully – and with pleasure. Our way of working has always been one of strong authenticity. We slowly but surely befriended the Ecuadorian village women who would become our loyal knitters. Starting with big sheep woollen sweaters, now passionately knitting with delicate alpaca wool – and always laughing at their own jokes. The colours, structures and shapes of landscapes inspire us in designing our new collections. Every Anneloes consultation with the knitters bit of land and every bit of culture comes with their own feel. Sweet smells, a warm evening breeze, or that volcano in front of our Ecuadorian bodega, unfazed in the pouring rain. We take it all in, draw upon our memories, work together with local craftswomen and deliver a story onto your That’sand INTI.Señora Gilda Melida Knitters from Zuleta Señoradoormat. Delia Amada 20

Elisa Representing INTI with a passion Our Ecuadorian friends and knitting women are true family people. This is Elisa Valencia, our absolute gem of an employee, who runs INTI like no other. Besides keeping in touch with all of our head-knitters and managing our administration, Elisa lives with her healthy 89-year-old father (who loves working in his garden) and takes care of her cousin’s son. Family comes first, and we feel the same way about Elisa!

Alpaca Fiesta Arequipa, Peru 34

ALPACA FIESTA Arequipa, Peru

For South America, alpacas are a very important species - they are bred solely for their natural fiber, which is then made into a specific soft type of wool. Unlike their cousin the llama, alpacas are not used as working animals. Every two years, the Alpaca Fiesta is hosted - a huge event in Arequipa (Peru) that focuses on the alpaca and their wool. Next to seeing beautiful herds of alpaca, the programme hosts fashion shows, exhibitions, cocktail nights and alpaca judging. As we at INTI only use baby alpaca wool, of course we were present to watch the show! And - a fiesta it is. A true spectacle to see native peoples and communities from all sorts of villages across the country come together in Arequipa to discuss the value of the alpaca. To us, it’s an animal that can impossibly be left out of our story.

From Peru to you We make sure our wool is sourced locally in one of the most beautiful places of Peru: Ancient Inca city Arequipa. There, a few hundred kilometres north of Chile in a location dominated by three big active volcanoes, many herds of alpaca and vincunas peacefully roam the mountains together. Once a year, they are brought together and shaved. The softest baby alpaca wool - from the rugged south of Peru to your wardrobe.

WASHING INSTRUCTIONS How to take care of your precious INTI garment

Wool is self-cleaning. After wearing, hang it out to air. We wash wool at 0 degrees in the washing machine on the wool cycle, and we also use the wool spin cycle. (Of course it is possible to hand wash too, but why hand wash when the result is just as good when using the machine?) If hand washing, make sure that you are using a sufficient amount of water. Also, don’t rub the material in the water; this can be avoided by using the right amount of water. Don’t spot clean; always wash the whole garment, not just the part that has the stain. Use a pH neutral detergent, or preferably a special wool washing detergent. Wash different colors separately. Do not use bleach! When rinsing, make sure that the temperature of the rinsing water is the same as the washing water. Never hang or lay a wool garment to dry when it is saturated in water. Try to remove as much of the water as possible and don’t lay it out on anything that absorbs moisture (such as a towel). Colors might run and the natural elasticity of the garment may deteriorate. Never put wool in the tumble dryer! (Unless the object is to make it into felt). When ironing, use a steam iron, or put a moist protective sheet between a regular iron and the woolen surface. Pilling and balling of your purchase is perfectly normal. To remove pilling, and keep your item looking fresh and recently bought, we recommend using a wool comb or a product like the Sweater Stone. It is natural and uses no chemicals or batteries.

A SOFT PASTEL SUMMER Introducing the new INTI Summer collection

Picture this. You’re enjoying the first sunny days with a picnic outside, but at the end of the day it just gets a little too chilly. Or: You’re spending a lovely June eve in the park, and when the sun goes down, all you want to do is stay. If only you had a soft knitted cardigan to keep you warm.. Sounds familiar? Behind the scenes, we’ve been working hard at an exclusive INTI summer collection of soft knits, perfect for those in between moments! Our collection consists of fifteen beautiful pastel items, from cardigans to light sweaters. The models are adapted to fit summer dresses, thin shirts and more sunlit outfits. We designed especially compact items - an easy travel in your bag to that garden party. We’re very excited to bring the beautiful wool of the baby alpaca and the joy of our Ecuadorian knitting women to your summer. Knit with love to make your August evenings a bit more convenient - and so much softer.
