2016 Human Rights and Leadership Awardee Karima Bennoune

is a professor of international law at the University of California–Davis School of Law. She grew up in Algeria and the United States and now lives in northern California. Her father was an outspoken professor at the University of Algiers who faced death threats during the 1990s, but continued speaking out against fundamentalism and terrorism. In writing her groundbreaking book, Your Fatwa Does Not Apply Here: Untold Stories from the Fight Against Muslim Fundamentalism, she set out to meet other people who acted courageously in the face of extremism and to garner greater international support for these heroic trailblazers. In 2014, Your Fatwa Does Not Apply Here won the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for non-fiction. It was also selected as the best social science book of 2013 by the American Library Association’s Booklist. The first TED talk based on the book—“When People of Muslim Heritage Confront Fundamentalism”—has garnered over 1.35 million views. Karima Bennoune has also been a consultant on human rights issues for the International Council on Human Rights Policy, the Soros Foundation, the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers, and UNESCO. Her human rights field missions have included Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bosnia, Fiji, Lebanon, Pakistan, South Korea, Thailand, and Tunisia. In 2009-2010, she was one of a group of international experts assembled by Leiden University to develop a new set of policy recommendations on counter-terrorism and international law. In October 2011, she acted as an election observer during the Tunisian constituent assembly elections with Gender Concerns International. In 2015, she served as an expert at the African regional summit in Nairobi on countering violent extremism. That same year, she was named United Nations Special Rapporteur in the Field of Cultural Rights.

About IANGEL The International Action Network for Gender Equity & Law (IANGEL) is an international network of lawyers dedicated to promoting gender equality and justice worldwide. Founded in 2013, IANGEL harnesses the power of pro bono legal services and connects it to the global struggle to secure and defend the rights of women and girls to education, self-determination, and security. A new concept in pro bono engagement, IANGEL takes an expansive view of the power and versatility of volunteer legal services to effect lasting social change. While traditional pro bono models are important for addressing the needs of local populations, IANGEL believes it is equally important that the power of pro bono legal services be deployed broadly to protect rights, without borders. Through our network, we develop strategic partnerships with organizations around the world, working to reform legal and cultural barriers that deprive women and girls of basic human rights. Through education, advocacy, and fostering direct pro bono engagement, IANGEL is building a powerful movement for gender equality and justice globally.

Nancy J. Newman, President of IANGEL, is a partner at Hanson Bridgett, and a lifelong activist. Nancy worked full-time for the United Farm Workers at age 15, and received her JD from UC Davis, Order of the Coif, at age 23. A past president of Queen’s Bench and of the National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations, she spoke at international conferences in Switzerland and Nigeria on organizing for women’s rights. Convinced of the vital need for increased pro bono engagement for women’s rights globally, she founded IANGEL in 2013.

Cecilia Lipp is the Executive Director of IANGEL. Prior to her role with IANGEL, she served survivors of torture and genderbased violence at Survivors International and the UCSF Trauma Recovery Center. She has also worked with the U.N. Human Settlement Programme and Amnesty International USA. Cecilia has an B.A. in Multicultural Community from U.C. Berkeley, a M.A. in Philosophy and Religion, with a focus on Women’s Spirituality, Peace and Partnership Studies from C.I.I.S., and a Masters in Studies of Law from U.C. Hastings College of the Law.

In March of 2016, IANGEL attended the United Nations 60th Commission on the Status of Women conference, and hosted a panel discussion “Engaging Pro Bono Resources for Women’s Empowerment.” At this event, IANGEL presented its groundbreaking research paper, which encourages law firms to ensure that human rights work is included in their definitions of pro bono work. In one of its recent successful collaborations, IANGEL connected Zimbabwe’s Research and Advocacy Unit (RAU) with an international law firm. The firm provided substantial legal research to assist RAU’s efforts to reform Zimbabwe’s laws on child marriage. IANGEL also supported RAU by providing it with key information from our network concerning efforts to reform child marriage laws in Nigeria and Malawi. On January 20, 2016, IANGEL celebrated with its partners in Zimbabwe when the Constitutional Court of Zimbabwe declared the law allowing child marriage unconstitutional. Following the decision, and in partnership with Global Fund for Women, IANGEL hosted a panel discussion on recent developments in the fight against child marriage in Africa. In another successful partnership, IANGEL assisted the mentorship program of the Alliance for International Women’s Rights (AIWR), helping to connect US law professors to law professors in Afghanistan. IANGEL also helped to enhance AIWR’s curriculum on the Afghan Constitution, by engaging a team of volunteer lawyers and education experts to build substantive legal parts of the curriculum, to assist the US mentor -Afghan mentee pairs.
