Rising Up, Standing Strong Featuring
Lateefah Simon honoring
Kim Thuy Seelinger
International Women’s Day Wednesday, March 8, 2017
Dedication IANGEL dedicates this event to all of the people who are rising up and standing strong against gender discrimination and injustice worldwide. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I’ll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops, Weakened by my soulful cries? Does my haughtiness offend you? Don’t you take it awful hard ‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines Diggin’ in my own backyard. You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise. -from“Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou

About IANGEL The International Action Network for Gender Equity & Law (IANGEL) is an international network of lawyers dedicated to promoting gender equality and justice worldwide. Founded in 2013, IANGEL harnesses the power of pro bono legal services and connects it to the global struggle to secure and defend the rights of women and girls to education, self-determination, and security. A new concept in pro bono engagement, IANGEL takes an expansive view of the power and versatility of volunteer legal services to effect lasting social change. While traditional pro bono models are important for addressing the needs of local populations, IANGEL believes it is equally important that the power of pro bono legal services be deployed broadly to protect rights, without borders. Through our network, we develop strategic partnerships with organizations around the world, working to reform legal and cultural barriers that deprive women and girls of basic human rights. Through education, advocacy, and fostering direct pro bono engagement, IANGEL is building a powerful movement for gender equality and justice globally.
Nancy J. Newman, President of IANGEL, is a partner at Hanson Bridgett, and a lifelong activist. Nancy worked full-time for the United Farm Workers at age 15, and received her JD from UC Davis, Order of the Coif, at age 23. A past president of Queen’s Bench and of the National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations, she spoke at international conferences in Switzerland and Nigeria on organizing for women’s rights. Convinced of the vital need for increased pro bono engagement for women’s rights globally, she founded IANGEL in 2013.
Cecilia Lipp is the Executive Director of IANGEL. Prior to her role with IANGEL, she served survivors of torture and genderbased violence at Survivors International and the UCSF Trauma Recovery Center. She has also worked with the U.N. Human Settlement Programme and Amnesty International USA. Cecilia has an B.A. in Multicultural Community from U.C. Berkeley, a M.A. in Philosophy and Religion, with a focus on Women’s Spirituality, Peace and Partnership Studies from C.I.I.S., and a Masters in Studies of Law from U.C. Hastings College of the Law.

Network News As 2017 unfolds, the world is witnessing tremendous political change. In response, a new movement is rising. On January 6, over 1,000 lawyers attended the Good Ally Conference in San Francisco, to discuss strategic engagement. As a result, IANGEL is now actively involved in convening the Women’s Rights Working Group from that conference. Together, we will mobilize volunteers for legal research, advocacy, and action. On January 21, millions of people joined the Women’s March in over 125 cities all over the world. IANGEL proudly marched in Boston, Oakland, San Francisco, and Seattle. We are determined to keep the joyful inspiration from that experience in our hearts and minds, as we build our network to promote equality and justice both here and abroad.
Contact us at info@iangel.org, or leave us a note with your business card inside the blue envelope at your seat.
In March of 2017, IANGEL looks forward to the 61st Session of the UN Commission in New York City, where it will present: “Pro Bono Power: Leveraging Legal Resources to Advance Gender Equality,” as an NGO Parallel Event. By connecting with engaged lawyers and NGO leaders from around the world, we are building a powerful network to meet the challenges ahead.

Pleased To Support IANGEL’s 4th Anniversary Gala! At Bowditch & Dewey, fostering a love of the law in women goes far beyond the offering of flexible work schedules. It means an active Women’s Initiative, inspiring and advancing careers, supporting and promoting community leadership, and recognizing the talent found in all of our attorneys. Kudos to B&D’s Pamela Berman for the great work she does to support IANGEL’s mission!
