Beacons for Change IANGEL’s 5th Anniversary Dinner Honoring
Hon. Angela Bradstreet Featuring
Hon. LaDoris Cordell 8 March 2018 International Women’s Day Marines’ Memorial Club, San Francisco
Today you’re down comes tomorrow Chances of rising again seems hollow Doubt may be in your mind oh give it time And all will be fine Seems you cannot make it but you can Though the road may be winding and long Our feet might get weary, but not our minds We will find light in the darkest of times Oh we are tomorrow’s keepers Wake up now bright nation of thinkers Mighty triumphant fearless Be a beacon of hope

Hon. Angela M. Bradstreet 2018 Awardee
T
he Honorable Angela M. Bradstreet’s career has been distinguished by her unwavering championing of women’s rights. A past president of Queen’s Bench, California Women Lawyers, and the Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF), she has provided passionate and innovative leadership in every role. While president of BASF, she established a “no glass ceiling” task force to foster promotion of women into management roles at law firms and legal departments. The initiative was a model policy, and she worked with other bar associations locally, nationally, and internationally to launch similar programs. Judge Bradstreet has also been a leading voice for LGBTQ equality, including spearheading a policy adopted by the San Francisco Superior Court to prohibit judges from being members of organizations that discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, the first such policy adopted by a U.S. trial court. She was appointed to the bench in 2010.

he Honorable LaDoris Hazzard Cordell became the first African American woman to sit on the superior court bench in Northern California in 1988. She remained on the bench of the Superior Court of Santa Clara County for the next 19 years. Since retiring from the bench, Judge Cordell has held a variety of high profile positions, including employment at Stanford University as Vice Provost & Special Counselor to the President for Campus Relations, a city council position on the Palo Alto City Council (a position she won after running a grassroots campaign) and an on-camera legal analyst for CBS-5 television and a guest commentator on Court TV. Judge Cordell also served as the Independent Police Auditor for the City of San Jose, having been appointed to that position after a national search. Judge Cordell is a mother, grandmother of five, and lives in Palo Alto with Florence Keller, her partner of 30 years. About IANGEL Founded in 2013, the International Action Network for Gender Equity & Law (IANGEL) is a global legal network for gender equality. A new concept in pro bono engagement, IANGEL takes an expansive view of the power and versatility of volunteer legal services to effect lasting change. While traditional pro bono models address needs of local populations, IANGEL believes it is equally important that the power of pro bono legal services be deployed without regard to borders, to protect rights. We are actively engaged in promoting greater and deeper involvement of pro bono lawyers, using research and advocacy to build a fairer world. IANGEL develops strategic partnerships around the world, focusing on health and reproductive justice, empowerment, and security. Since its founding, IANGEL has connected in 24 countries, secured over 4000 volunteer hours, and engaged in over 60 panels, projects, and actions to advance women’s rights. Through education, advocacy, and fostering direct pro bono engagement, IANGEL is building a global network for transformative gender justice.
Nancy J. Newman, President of IANGEL, is a partner at Hanson Bridgett, and a lifelong activist. Nancy worked full-time for the United Farm Workers at age 15, and received her JD from UC Davis, Order of the Coif, at age 23. A past president of Queen’s Bench Bar Association and of the National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations, she has spoken at multiple international conferences on women’s rights issues for over 15 years. Convinced of the vital need for increased pro bono engagement for women’s rights globally, she founded IANGEL in March of 2013.
Kamardip Singh is the Executive Director of IANGEL. Kamardip has over a decade of experience working in women’s rights, both locally and internationally. Previously, she worked with the Association of Women’s Rights in Development, providing political and economic analysis on global women’s rights. She also worked at Global Fund for Women as the Program Officer for Asia Pacific, connecting philanthropy with grassroots efforts. Kamardip has deep understanding gender-based violence, and has provided multilingual advocacy for domestic violence survivors.

IANGEL In Action 2018 “Raising our children to tear down your wall.” -- sign at Women’s March II, Oakland, 1/20/18 In a regressive environment that brings bad news every day, we are seeing a new activism and resilience in our communities. Longtime activists, and those who have never been involved before, are coming together to promote equality and justice. To fight the division in contemporary politics, we are building bridges, connecting legal resources globally to defend the rights of women and girls. IANGEL is proud to be an agent for change in this critical moment, developing new avenues for pro bono engagement. This January, IANGEL joined the multitudes in cities across the US for the second Women’s March. The March provided a new infusion of inspiration, as we fight efforts to undo progress on women’s rights. As part of a broad coalition to end violence against women, IANGEL urged support for the bipartisan International Violence Against Women Act, to guarantee a permanent role for the Office of Global Women’s Issues in the State Department and ensure that US foreign policy includes strategies to end gender-based violence. In February, IANGEL presented a panel discussion with the Women’s Intercultural Network (WIN) in preparation for the upcoming 62nd Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York City. Next week, IANGEL will present at multiple parallel events at the CSW, including research and analysis from recent projects on child marriage and widow’s rights. By connecting with lawyers and NGO leaders, IANGEL is building a powerful new force to strengthen advocacy and engagement for women’s human rights around the world.
