FROM THE

EDITORS...

Welcome to our final issue of 2021 and the first issue of 2022 – all in one! As you can see, we have gone out (and in) with a bang – launching our fabulous new look in a magazine that's jam-packed full of great local content, in a size that screams quality, and is genuinely representative of everyone living and working in our great region. It's onwards and upwards for intouch Magazine – and we welcome you along for the journey. Unsurprisingly, organising an event like the annual Christmas Lights Spectacular isn't just an end-of-year endeavour – it's a year-round job – and one that was made particularly difficult in a year of lock-downs and restrictions. However, thanks to a mammoth effort by the team at Hunter Valley Gardens, we can all now enjoy the fruits of their labours throughout December and January (switching off on Australia Day). If you've never been to this unique and spectacular event, or even if you're a regular, there's something for everyone to enjoy this year. Go behind the scenes and find out how Hunter Valley Gardens has pulled off this magnificent feat on page 20. In this issue, packed to the brim with Holiday reading, you'll also find out why Newcastle is set to become the 'next big thing', what's in store for the Civic Theatre in 2022, how to bring some resort-style into your own home, how Samaritans are helping those less fortunate to celebrate Christmas, what's coming live to our stages (and parks) and why preventing foot pain is important and why you should be wearing red in February. And don't forget our School Holiday Guide – which is sure to keep the kids entertained through six sizzling weeks of School Holidays. Despite the challenges this year, the team at intouch has still enjoyed getting to know some of our favourite people, places and local businesses. We are part of your community and love sharing all the great things about living in the Hunter. So from our families to yours, we wish you a restful Christmas and a fabulous 2022.

Bob McKinnon and Brian Fogarty Presents

in concert

The Real Deal LIVE AND ONSTAGE!

Why see a tribute show when you can experience the real deal? With a line-up that includes Australia's first King of Pop Normie Rowe, the Queen of the Mods Dinah Lee and Australia's King of Country Rock Jade Hurley, 3 Legends in Concert brings together Australian musical royalty on one stage. They really are the real deal! The trio brings back the energy and excitement from the "wonder years" of the Sixties ... the perfect reflection of an era. The audience is guaranteed a sensational show of great music and wonderful memories, proudly presented by Bob McKinnon and Brian Fogarty. Normie Rowe AM was Australia's first King of Pop and arguably the biggest pop star of the sixties. Defying the logic of the times, Normie's period of peak popularity came when the Beatles dominated the charts around the world. It was the period of popular music where most established solo singers were suddenly banished from the charts, and young singers joined or formed bands. And yet, here was this Melbourne teenager creating pop riots and becoming the first Melbourne recording artist

to achieve a national Australian No.1. With hits including Shakin' All Over, Ohh La La, and It Ain't Necessarily So, he has starred in a myriad of stage shows, including Annie, Chess, Evita and Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. He has literally – done it all! Dinah Lee (the one-and-only Queen of the Mods) is a New Zealand born superstar with her International Number One Hits Don't You Know Yockomo, Reet Petite and Do the Blue Beat. She is widely acknowledged as New Zealand's greatest musical import to Australia. Jade Hurley OAM, dubbed by Johnny O'Keefe as "Australia's King of Country Rock", is Australia's very own "Piano Man" with the unique "record" that every record he has released has achieved Gold, Platinum or Double Status in Australia and New Zealand. Don't miss the chance to relive all the great memories and all the great songs of the sixties when these three music legends come together for one night only across three local venues!

OPERA HUNTER’S

La Traviata On Stage

Opera Hunter is delighted to present a new production of Verdi’s most famous and beloved opera, La Traviata, at Warners Bay Theatre, 16 to 27 February 2022. The production is sung in English and has been adapted from the novel The Lady of The Camellias by French writer Alexander Dumas Jr. It tells the story of Violetta Valery, a highclass courtesan, her life and times in Paris in the nineteenth century, her love for Alfredo Germont, and the forces of society and family that wrenched them apart. Director Michael Blaxland sets the work in the late 1880s, depicting both the glamour and the seedy side of the times. Ashlee Woodgate sings Violetta, Sam Elmi is Alfredo, PJ Willis and Tristan Entwistle sing

Christmas Lights SPECTACULAR WORDS LIANE MORRIS LIVING IN NEWCASTLE AND THE HUNTER REGION, WE ARE SPOILT FOR CHOICE WHEN IT COMES TO EVENTS, ARTS, FOOD, WINE AND TOURISM DESTINATIONS. THERE'S OUR BEAUTIFUL BEACHES AND WATERWAYS, NATIONAL PARKS, WILDERNESS AREAS AND, OF COURSE, HUNTER VALLEY GARDENS (HVG). THE HVG CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SPECTACULAR IS QUITE LITERALLY THE LARGEST IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE YET TYPICALLY ATTRACTS VISITATION MOSTLY FROM SYDNEYSIDERS RATHER THAN LOCALS. THERE IS A SENSE THAT LOCALS BELIEVE IT'S JUST ANOTHER LIGHT DISPLAY, THE SAME EVERY YEAR, SEEN IT ONCE, DON'T NEED TO SEE IT AGAIN - BUT NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH. A favourite of families, lovers and everyone keen to get into the Christmas spirit, this mesmerising display encompasses 5 hectares of the 14-hectare gardens and utilises over 3 million lights. It opened to the public on Friday, 5 November and will run through until Australia Day 26 January 2022, every evening from 5.30pm until 10.30pm, so there's no excuse not to get along and be amazed. Chief Elf at the HVG Christmas Lights

Spectacular, Amanda Andrews (aka the Events Manager), is only new to the team of 41 locals who all work together to make HVG the attraction that it is. There's the horticultural crew of 20, the maintenance crew of eight, the floating crew of six and the management team of seven. The Christmas Lights Spectacular takes three months to set up and two months to dismantle with one month break from all things Christmas before planning starts all over again. This effectively means that staff work on the display year-round – planning, sourcing and installing. This year, with covid restrictions taking up such a significant portion of the year, it was more challenging than most. What would typically take a team of 12 three months to install was done in just four weeks. It is a truly remarkable feat and an indicator of how passionate and hardworking the team at HVG are when it comes to this cornerstone event. "After another difficult year for many Australians, we are thrilled to invite people back to the Christmas Lights Spectacular. It is truly the perfect escape for families and their loved ones to relax and enjoy our rides, attractions and lights as we embrace the Christmas season," says Amanda, who is loving her new role. "My favourite thing is how super creative it is. I have a background in choreography and

performing arts, so the fact that we can let our imaginations run free with our ideas being bought to life by the incredibly talented crew really feeds my creative spirit." There is an emphasis on creativity and community, with the team working together to brainstorm crazy ideas and then turning them into a reality. Shane Bolton, the Asset and Maintenance Manager, has been with HVG for eight years and is hailed as a 'genius' by Amanda. Everything that is used to create the displays is designed and sourced by Shane and his team. The giant baubles, for example, are designed by Shane, who then sends the designs overseas to be created. It's a long way from his role as an Engineer in the mining industry. Ian Farrell, Head of Maintenance, has been with HVG since it began. It's his job to take the designs and newly created pieces and craft the displays. Ian's wife also works at the gardens and is a Storybook Garden painter. Amanda considers it a privilege to work with such amazing, fun people who have developed a family-like community with a strong sense of ownership over the business's success. The staff have grown with the gardens, and are invested in its ability to deliver crowd-pleasing Continued next page ▶ intouch 21

(Continued) events, striving to create bigger, better and brighter displays, becoming more creative and technologically advanced every single year. The message Amanda wants to convey to locals is that the Christmas Lights Spectacular changes every season. There is always something different to see and enjoy with technology constantly evolving. As a result, it is never the same. This year, don't miss the dancing Santa in the new waterfall display, which includes more than 32,500 hand installed lights. In addition, there are new Mega Trees along the edge of the lake with a light sequence set to music, and be sure to check out the giant Bauble Tree. Another first this year is that Santa has his very own purpose-built igloo – Santa's Cave, where he and his elves will be available for Santa photos every night until 24 December. There is also plenty of live entertainment to be enjoyed this year, with each month offering slightly different options, opening up the opportunity to visit the Christmas Lights Spectacular more than once during the season and enjoying new experiences each time. It's an element of the event that Amanda feels quite passionate about. "Events and varied entertainment are what will keep the local community coming back to the gardens," said Amanda. "Creating large scale events from scratch that fully engage the local community and act as a drawcard for visitors is what attracted me to this job. We've got licenced characters appearing every day, carollers, fairies, jumping elves and next year it's 22 intouch

my intention to stage a Carols by Candlelight event as part of the Christmas Spectacular. The pandemic prevented anything like that from happening this year, unfortunately, but it's an exciting and obvious way to add even more spectacle to our annual event." Visitors will be joined by cheeky elves tumbling through the gardens, a real-life lightup fairy in the magical Fairyland, and Disney characters wandering through the Storybook Garden. To light up your Christmas spirit, you can also tune in to the sound of Christmas with Roving Carollers every night in December up to Christmas Eve. The Amazing Jono will thrill his audience with his magical stunts, and the one-person circus act that is the incredible Bravissimo will groove and hoop to delight everyone every Friday and Saturday during November and January. Srinivas Gopal, General Manager of Hospitality and Leisure Division says, "The Hunter Valley region is known for its outstanding food, and the Christmas Lights Spectacular will be no different, with an array of delicious options that will keep up your Christmas spirits all night long including woodfired pizza, Mexican Cantina, German Grill Haus and a dessert tent." For families who wish to BYO picnic, there is the option to enjoy a packed meal or BBQ in the park near the HVG Shopping Village. HVG offers re-entry passes if you're coming back in the same session. To take advantage of this option, you'll need to see the staff at the entry gate. It is not permitted to bring picnics into the gardens themselves.

Those who make an annual visit to the Christmas Lights Spectacular will be thrilled to see lots of old favourites such as the Lovers Tunnel, where it's pretty popular to pop the question and is the perfect opportunity to indulge in some festive romance. Kids will be excited to see 'Hunter', the giant illuminated teddy bear again, as well as the Giant Castle. For those that have been missing international travel, the Around the World display enables you to visit famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Edinburgh Castle, London's Big Ben, the Statue of Liberty, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Colosseum and the Taj Mahal as well as our own Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. A visit to the Christmas Lights Spectacular would not be complete without taking a spin on one (or all) of the HVG rides. Be bold on the daring 35-metre-long Super Slide, which is back for the first time since 2019, get dizzy on the Swing Chairs as you fly 11 metres off the ground, or try the twisty twirly Teacups, relax on the 25-metre-high Ferris Wheel and take in the amazing views or take a charming spin on the traditional Venetian Carousel. This year, for the first time, HVG is offering a combined day and evening pass so that visitors can enjoy the whole garden experience during the daytime as well as the evening's Christmas Lights Spectacular. Enjoy everything the gardens have to offer during the day, exit by 4.30pm when the gardens have to be vacated, enjoy a beverage at a nearby winery or pub and then return from 5.30pm when the light shows begin. It's the perfect day out. Kim Jacob's, HVG Marketing Manager, says, "We have carefully implemented COVID-safe measures to ensure everyone can attend safely and finish off the year joyfully. We look forward to inviting everyone to this magical event as we celebrate the Christmas season and a wonderful New Year." New Year's Eve features the garden's famous fireworks display where visitors and locals alike can create cherished memories and kickstart 2022 in magical style. The Christmas Lights Spectacular is a not-to-be-missed event for all ages, ideal for the entire family. Why not start an annual tradition to really get everyone into the festive spirit, especially after the challenging year that has been experienced by all? The dazzling immersive displays and entertainment program promise to delight and thrill the young and the young at heart. It's the perfect festive escape and a guaranteed good time, right on your very doorstep! Tickets must be booked in advance from the website.

LOVE AND LIFE AND

a Hidden Gem

This December, Opera Hunter and Newcastle Theatre Company will present an exciting double bill by Leonard Bernstein at the Newcastle Theatre Company Theatre. This is the fourth Love & Life series for Opera Hunter in recent years, all directed by Michael Blaxland. The huge canon of American music from the modern era is a rich source of material. Opera Hunter presents a tiny morsel in this program, with excerpts from The American Musical, American Opera and Art Song, performed by a cavalcade of stars of Hunter Theatre. Trouble in Tahiti is a hidden gem. Bernstein wrote both the

lyrics and the music, and the story is said to be based on the relationship of Bernstein's parents, Sam and Jennie (changed to Bernstein's more singable Grandmother's name of Dinah). A vocal Jazz Trio, presented as a Greek Chorus, comment throughout with sharp satire on the failure of The American Dream. The title refers to an escapist movie plot, a symbol of the importance of the "silver screen" in the characters' lives. Direction is by Michael Blaxland, while Music Direction and accompaniment is by Mercia Buck.

NEWCASTLE MUSEUM DIRECTOR JULIE BAIRD AND ARTIST TREVOR DICKINSON WITH SOME OF THE VIBRANT WORK INCLUDED IN THE NEW EXHIBITION, OH YEAH, I FORGOT ABOUT THAT: A DECADE OF CHANGE SEEN THROUGH THE EYES OF MR TREVOR DICKINSON, ARTIST.

EXHIBITION TURNS BACK TIME ON NEWCASTLE'S

Transformative Decade

It's not unusual for a museum to turn back the clock to celebrate the way things were. But Newcastle Museum is focussing on the past to draw attention to the present, with an exhibition designed to highlight how the cityscape has changed during the last decade. The exhibition was curated to celebrate the Museum's 10th year of operation in the former Railway Workshops at Honeysuckle. Aptly titled, Oh yeah, I forgot about that: A decade of change seen through the eyes of Mr Trevor Dickinson, Artist, it features more than 20 works by the much-loved Newcastle artist, including two new pieces commissioned for this show. "Trevor's colourful, largerthan-life murals have formed an intrinsic part of the Museum and its surrounds since we opened the doors here in August 2011," said Newcastle Museum Director Julie Baird.

"We quickly forget what has changed in our city as new landscapes become normal. For our 10th anniversary, Newcastle Museum wanted to remind people of the alterations to our normal and often unnoticed cityscape. "Through the artwork chosen for this exhibition, Trevor presents his own view of Newcastle, curating the identity of the natural landscape in the same way we curate its history." "To celebrate Newcastle Museum's own journey, we also commissioned Trevor to create two new artworks, capturing something constant and something that has changed within the Museum. These are being seen for the first time in this exhibition." Oh yeah, I forgot about that: A decade of change seen through the eyes of Mr Trevor Dickinson, Artist, is open to the public now until 27 February 2022.

Why Newcastle is the

WORDS QUENTIN VON ESSEN Newcastle is a city on the move, a city that’s changing in all that it offers. What was once considered an important industrial centre for the region is now rapidly transforming into one of the most vital culture, business and heritage hubs in New South Wales. With stunning city beaches, wineries on the doorstep, its own university, a major port and airport and a relaxed urban vibe, Newcastle offers an enviable lifestyle, and Australians are increasingly leaving the capital cities for a piece of it – assisted mainly by the COVID driven work 38 intouch • HUNTER HOMES SPECIAL FEATURE

from home trend inspired by lockdowns across the country. Changes to the rail corridor, the light rail and the increased investment and development along the harbour and inner-city, both in terms of residential and business dwellings and recreational spaces, make Newcastle a highly sought-after city in which to live and work and attractive for investors. Add to this a planned $66 million upgrade to the Newcastle Airport runway, which is expected to generate thousands of local jobs and create new travel and export destinations for the region; the development of a $200 million Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine (STEMM) hub for industryengaged research and innovation at UON’s Callaghan campus; an expanded university campus at Honeysuckle; an upgraded John Hunter Hospital and the proposed development

of Hunter Park as a nationally significant sporting and entertainment destination. Yes, the future of this region is exciting. And while buyers’ hopes of buying into an out of control and inflated Sydney property market are heading even further south, savvy buyers and investors are heading north. With house prices in Sydney increasing by 30.4 per cent in the last 12 months to a median price of $1,499,126 compared to $818,000 in Newcastle (despite rising 31.3 per cent in the last year), it’s clear to see why there is so much interest in the Newcastle property market. So, while Sydney has been confirming its spot as one of the most expensive cities in the world, just a little further up the road, Newcastle, with its natural beauty, booming infrastructure, stable population growth and still relatively affordable housing, continues to tick all the boxes for lifestyle options and property investment to become the next big thing.

The McCloy Philosophy… ENRICHING LIVES AND COMMUNITIES

JEFF MCCLOY

WORDS LIANE MORRIS YOU WOULD HAVE TO BE LIVING UNDER A ROCK IF YOU HAVEN'T HEARD OF JEFF MCCLOY AND HIS FAMILY BUSINESS, THE MCCLOY GROUP. AND WHILST CONTROVERSY HAS FOLLOWED HIM THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER, HIS PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY, GENEROSITY AND PASSIONATE DESIRE TO CREATE STRONG COMMUNITIES BENEFIT MANY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE AND IS SOMETHING HE CAN JUSTIFIABLY BE PROUD OF. Life for Jeff McCloy began in a very humble way in a tiny cottage in Belmont. He still remembers using newspaper in the outside lavatory and the horse leading the bread van for bread deliveries. There was always food on the table, though, and young Jeff grew up wanting to be a dentist, which he laughs about now. His grandfather and father were both builders who rode the waves of boom and bust as they tried to provide for their families. When Jeff was still in primary school, his father experienced a significant downturn in his fortunes, and Jeff believes that this experience helped shape his life. "When your dad goes broke, and you're just a little kid, it shapes who you become. You never want to go through that if you can help it.

And you certainly don't want your family to go through it," says Jeff. There's a sense that the elder McCloy, Jeff's father Don, was keen to have Jeff join the family business right from the start, but the young man needed to go off and be his own person. His first year at the University of Newcastle was spent playing rugby and snooker. He did not apply himself to his studies in Civil Engineering until after he'd had "the talk" with his parents, after which he returned to university, put his head down and finished his degree successfully. There followed a series of jobs in Sydney, which he loved, including stints at Lend Lease and the Public Works Department and working on the MLC Centre. During this time, he developed his craft and his business acumen. His father, however, still had ideas for Jeff to join him, and in the late '70s, Jeff promised to give it a go for 12 months. This move proved to be highly successful and certainly went way beyond 12 months. They won the tender to build the John Hunter Hospital, and to this day, it is still one of the things that Jeff is most proud of. "Business-wise, the John Hunter Hospital construction was an amazing achievement," said Jeff. "We came in one year ahead of schedule, and I'm still proud of it."

The younger McCloy set about ensuring that the family business would never go broke. For a short while, the business moved into the Sydney market but sustained losses. This led to a return to the Hunter region and a pivot away from construction to property development and diversification. The Jewells Tavern and shopping centre was their first commercial development, followed quickly by the Belmont North subdivision. The future of the McCloy Group was set. Today, the business has three main areas of focus. First, there are over 25 residential communities under the McCloy name, six employment centres and four retirement living complexes. Jeff's core philosophy of living life well, being connected to the community and giving back to society is at the heart of each of these areas of focus. The residential communities are branded Masterplanned for Living and reflect Jeff's passion for creating communities that people love to live in, with uncompromising quality and environments that feature public art, landscaped parklands, playgrounds and open spaces. The employment centres are branded Designed for Productivity. They are all about Continued next page ▶ HUNTER HOMES SPECIAL FEATURE • intouch 43

(Continued) maximising functionality and location for efficiency in output so that people can work well in spaces that complement their lives and provide balance. The retirement living complexes are branded Created for Lifestyle and are part of a new joint venture titled Principle Living to develop state-of-the-art retirement living facilities that offer the best lifestyle offerings for the later stages of life. The need to enrich other people's lives is at the heart of the business and is what drives Jeff. "It's exciting to be partly responsible for enriching other people's lives through the development of the communities that we build," said Jeff. "I get a great sense of satisfaction and pride knowing that I've left something better than it was before. We use public art in our communities to create a sense of belonging. As people drive through the entry of their community, which always feature an identifying sculptural art form, they get a real sense of coming home. The higher quality and standards of our communities raise the tempo of behaviour and have a calming effect on those that live there." Whether it's the public art, the landscaped parklands or the nature reserves that attract 44 intouch • HUNTER HOMES SPECIAL FEATURE

the buyers, the rate of sales for McCloy Group residential communities is very high, with people sometimes even camping out to purchase when land is released. Families return to McCloy Group estates too. Children who've grown up there are returning once they're ready to purchase their own home in a generational connection to place. As a result, resale value is also high. Communities are built along sustainable environmental principles and are primarily owner-occupied, with homeowners expressing confidence in the projects and the capital growth they provide. The industry has recognised the McCloy Group excellence, with many awards being won over the years. This year the McCloy Group has communities listed as finalists in the 2021 Urban Taskforce Awards and also has entries in the 2021 UDIA (Urban Development Institute of Australia) Development Excellence Awards. Personally, Jeff has been recognised by his peers and his community through several awards over the years and is known as an outspoken advocate for bringing development and prosperity to the City of Newcastle. He has been the Hunter Business Person of the Year, awarded the University of Newcastle Alumni Award for Leadership, he's been Chair of the University of Newcastle Foundation and

awarded the City of Newcastle Medal. The McCloy philosophy of enriching the lives of others is not only at the heart of the business but is also what has driven the development of the McCloy Family Foundation, which recently donated $1million to the Mark Hughes Foundation. It's a natural extension of Jeff's work over the years, supporting a vast number of causes and charities because he believes profoundly that it is essential to give back to the community that supports his business and his family. He's contributed to medical research, education, welfare groups and sporting teams and clubs. "Philanthropy is in my DNA," said Jeff. "I'd like the Foundation to continue long after I'm gone. It's a wonderful thing for the family to work on together, for everyone to be part of the decision-making process. We get so many requests, setting up the Foundation was a way to formalise the process and enable direct action for the causes that we believe in." The McCloy Family Foundation has been established to create better outcomes for the region, reflecting the family's innovative approach to communities and creating places and opportunities for all to live better lives. A noble ambition and one that is set to ensure the McCloy legacy for many decades to come.

Resort-Style to Your Home this Summer SUMMER IS HERE, AND AT OZ DESIGN FURNITURE THIS SEASON, THEY’LL BE BRINGING THE RESORT TO YOU! Create a space where relaxation is a top priority, and all your stresses will be left at the door. By incorporating certain design elements, it can feel as though holiday mode will never end. This season, resort-inspired interiors are your passport for holidaying at home. Resorts are all about the romantics of the countless beaches, the lush forests and the lively colours of the places we wish we were in. Inspired by the beauty of nature, this style showcases an abundance of natural materials and earthy colours that are taken from the tropics. From introducing prints of palm trees

and tropical fruit to grace your walls to lush greenery and eye-catching brass décor, there are several ways to achieve this look this Summer. Sometimes the summer days get a bit too hot to spend outside, so why not bring the outdoors in? Decorating with tall, standing houseplants, like the banana tree garden pot, is a great way of adding a vibrant pop of colour to your room. Plants and flowers are like living art, creating a sense of calm while enhancing your interior. However, if you don’t have the best reputation for keeping plants alive, faux plants are a great alternative. That way, it still feels as though you have brought the outside in, but without the worry of having to water them every day.

Palm trees and botanical patterns should dominate your interior this Summer. From soft furnishings, such as cushions and throws to beautiful wall art. Prints with muted and rich greens work perfectly with brass and copper tones, so keep this in mind when choosing lamps and other pieces of décor to complete that sense of luxury. Ultimately, this Summer is about embracing the natural world and celebrating it in all of its forms. Furniture pieces constructed from rattan, like the Bungalow designer chair, or woven jute pieces provide natural texture and tone to really make your home feel like a resort. Since founder Leah Jay transformed ‘rentals’ into Property Management back in 1994, Leah Jay has become an industry leader in this field and the most awarded property managers in NSW. Now into its 25th year, the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales (REINSW) Awards for Excellence recognises the best, bravest, and brightest work across the industry. The winners of the 2021 REINSW Awards for Excellence were revealed online again this year, and the Leah Jay team were awarded the coveted NSW Residential Property Management Team. In what was the most competitive category of the Awards, with nine finalists in the final round, Leah Jay is extremely proud to have taken out this title. This recognises the efforts of the entire team across all three Leah Jay offices.

The second award, Operational Support, was won by Leasing & Inspection Unit Manager Rebecca Eveleigh. Rebecca has been with Leah Jay for six years and is the highly valued leader of the Leasing team, a team that has gone through fundamental changes over the challenging COVID-19 period. “It’s wonderful to see Rebecca, a long-standing member of our team, recognised at these prestigious awards,” Cassandra Lantry, General Manager, said. “It is testament to Bec’s commitment to her professional development and her unwavering belief in the Leasing team and what they are trying to achieve.” “Our nominations in two categories, ‘Operational Support’ and ‘Residential Property Management Team’, demonstrate the work we do behind the scenes to stay at the forefront of property management,” Cassandra said. Leah Jay has an extraordinary history with the Awards, having consistently been nominated in multiple categories since 1994 with a total of 10 wins and 27 nominations.

Stand aside school catchments and easy water access. According to experts at Australia's largest independent property valuation firm, the newest driver of residential demand is... industrial. Chris McKillop, a commercial director at Herron Todd White, said the emergence of 'Lifestyle Industrial' is changing the face of sought-after residential markets across the country, with the phenomenon creating a prime opportunity for homeowners and investors. "Lifestyle industrial sees sheds moving away from their traditional use for businesses like smash repair shops, spray painters and steel fabricators, and toward more

as microbreweries, high-quality restaurants, cafes, hairdressers and florists. Some have even become live music venues fronting retail clothing outlets, gyms and sporting venues," he said Mr McKillop said that lifestyle industrial had flipped the property game on its head for both homeowners and investors. Historically, being near industrial property was an absolute no-go for residents, with claims of noise, smell and heavy-use activity being a turn-off. "But these new precincts are now being embraced by residents, the flow on benefits for their property values – some are even choosing to live within the industrial hubs themselves."

COME CHECK OUT NEWCASTLE’S NEWEST FLEXI-SPACE PROVIDER, WOTSO, AT 1 TUDOR STREET, NEWCASTLE WEST. Just like the traditional workplace, coworking has evolved dramatically – no, coworking spaces aren’t just for tech start-ups anymore. Many businesses, therefore, more industries are recognising the benefits and ease of pursuing a flexible workspace arrangement: the leading benefit – flexibility. Signing five-year leases are a thing of the past. Instead, say hello to month-to-month agreements, the ability to scale as needed and the means to change your membership without any financial loss or repercussions. WOTSO offers an alternative to the traditional office or home set up, with near-to-home locations – focusing on bringing the amenities of the CBD to suburban and regional areas of Australia. Shared amenities at your fingertips such as serviced meeting rooms, podcasting

studios, workshops, events, snacks – you name it. Initially, the idea of “coworking” was sparked to facilitate collaborative work and shared resources. To this day, flexible workspaces tap into the sharing economy. For example, why buy podcasting equipment when you can rent it on an as-needed basis without the need to purchase it, rent space permanently to store and use it, and then maintain the equipment. The importance of flexibility in the workforce has been highlighted more than ever. Flexible workspaces offer you cost savings and convenience that are essential for small to medium enterprises. Private offices, permanent desks, daily drop-ins, bundle passes, the WOTSO Passport – the options at WOTSO are endless and genuinely flexible under no-lock in contracts. With site managers and receptionists available during the working day, you will always feel welcome at WOTSO. MYTH 2. You must socialise in a coworking space. Whilst WOTSO organises events, workshops, and opportunities for socialising and networking, at the end of the day, everyone chooses WOTSO with a common purpose – to get work done. There is never an obligation to socialise or attend events. MYTH 3. Flexi workspaces need to be in the CBD. It only took a pandemic for the rest of the world to get behind WOTSO’s vision – WOTSO brings CBD amenities to the suburbs giving you the option to cut the commute and achieve a greater work-life balance. With more companies allowing employees to work from home, you might want to try working near home (WNH). MYTH 4. Flexi workspaces are not for corporates. WOTSO is for everyone. A significant portion of WOTSO members work in or service the corporate sector. Corporates can choose to have their office at WOTSO, or they may decide to purchase 100-day passes per month for their workforce to use at any one of our 19 locations that are close to their home, meaning they remove the distractions of WFH but get all the benefits of WNH. MYTH 5. It isn’t easy to join a coworking space. All you have to do is email, call or pop in and WOTSO will be able to answer any questions you have and organise a tour of the space. You could be working from WOTSO the day you walk in for your tour. Bring your computer, and WOTSO will organise the rest. It’s really that easy. intouch 53

COMMUNITY BANDS TOGETHER

for Christmas Cheer WORDS KIM-CHERIE DAVIDSON | SAMARITANS

Once you get to a certain age, getting to know someone on a romantic level is hard. You have both already lived a lifetime. The damage, the hang-ups that can come from previous partners and past experiences can flow on into your blossoming relationship. It can feel like you have been sentenced to hard labour for a crime you didn’t commit. You have to decide early on if it is going to be worth all that work while still trying to be your best self, knowing that your new partner is likely making the same calculations in their head about you.

IN THE SPIRIT: CHRISTMAS LUNCH IN PARK COORDINATORS DANA PICHALOFF AND SHARYN BECKER

The Christmas Team at Samaritans is busy preparing for big festive picnic community lunches in Newcastle and Singleton. For more than 15 years, Samaritans have hosted these lunches to offer children, women and men experiencing homelessness, disadvantage or loneliness, much-needed compassion on Christmas Day. With the impacts of lockdowns still being felt, Samaritans know there are people in our communities who may not celebrate Christmas this year. So, the picnic concept was created for guests to enjoy lunch and gifts on Christmas Day with their loved ones on their own picnic rug at Newcastle Foreshore or Singleton Showground. Christmas Lunch in the Park (Newcastle) coordinator Dana Pichaloff said these two

With these limitations in mind, it’s almost a parting of the sea level miracle when anyone over 40 finds someone that they are happy to spend quality time alone with. When you actually find someone who happens to be living in a different city, getting to spend a weekend together can take military-style planning and preparation. You spend time online looking for any decent accommodation that sits somewhere between your two hometowns. If you live in a regional area, it can more often than not be some perfectly adequate roadside hotel or a room above a pub. All those options are fine, but they don’t scream luxury or romance. While doing my own search, I came across what felt like a mirage - the Dunedoo Shearing Huts. Located 10 minutes outside the NSW town of Dunedoo on a working farm that runs cattle, sheep and several different crops. The online photos were beautiful, but what sold me was the idea of isolation and looking at a real night sky. For those who don’t get out of the city much and think it’s the same sky they look at every night, trust me when I tell you, it’s not. The property has been owned and run by four generations of the Watts family. The shearers’ huts were erected in the early 1950s fabulous events were only possible due to the generosity of the local communities, sponsors, supporters, and volunteers. “I wish to acknowledge the kindness we have experienced in relation to our Christmas picnics. A huge and sincere thank you to the individuals, businesses, organisations and groups that have jumped in to support our events,” Mrs Pichaloff said. In Newcastle, the sponsors include Port Waratah Coal Services, Greater Bank, Varley Group, Adoram Steel, Commonwealth Bank, First National Newcastle City, Hunter Homes, Judo Bank, LJ Hooker Belmont, Newcastle Weighing Services, Pitcher Partners, Tyrepower, Diamond IT, Jesmond Lions Club, KFC, McCarroll’s Automotive Group, Woolworths, Events Cinema and Serve Tech. In Singleton, they include BHP, Mt Owen Glendell Operations – Glencore, Yancoal – Mt Thorley Warkworth, Singleton Diggers, Northern Agricultural Association, Club Singleton, Bloomfield Group Foundation, Thiess, Hunter Valley Operations and Singleton Council. Christmas Lunch in Singleton coordinator Kim-Cherie Davidson said there were still many opportunities to help through donations, in-kind support and volunteering. “Each location has different requests. For

when the current homestead was built and constructed with the same local bricks. As I stepped into the kitchen, what struck me most was that I had never stayed somewhere so well set up. Not only a BBQ and every kitchen item you could need (including a coffee maker), but a fridge full of beautiful fresh food. Mushrooms, fresh tomatoes, farm eggs, and even a welcome present with a lovely bottle of wine and a box full of cards painted by a local artist who I discovered only after arriving home was our host, Lucy. For the next two days, we slept late and indulged. We filled our bellies and our souls in a way you can only do miles from any distractions. We spoke about our past and hinted at what the future might look like in that tentative way you do when things are new. We laid a blanket out on the grass under the full moon in the warm night air. My thoughts drifted to the fact that tomorrow is promised to no one. If I knew my lifespan was limited, would I be happy that this is how I was spending my time? In surroundings that relax me, with a man who does the same. The answer was a resounding yes. You can also discover Dunedoo Shearers Huts on Airbnb (www.airbnb.com.au).

example, in Singleton, we still need at least 15 volunteers to help on Christmas Day. The roles include morning set up, hamper and gift-giving, photographer, and clean up, to name a few,” Ms Davidson said. “Whereas in Newcastle, they are on a mission to find 200 rugs to shower the foreshore with colour and guests to be comfortable. They are asking for new picnic rugs, about $15 each at leading retailers, to be donated. “ “We are asking for your support as a sponsor, donor or volunteer at Newcastle or Singleton to help us spread some Christmas sparkle and cheer to ensure no one needs to experience Christmas alone or go without during the festive season.” Picnic Christmas Lunch in the Park (Newcastle) will be at Newcastle Foreshore from 11am to 1pm, and Picnic Christmas Lunch in Singleton will be at the Singleton Showground from 11am to 1pm Christmas Day. Sometimes it is due to the loss of a tooth. Sometimes, it is the progressive deterioration associated with gum disease, and sometimes it is wear/erosion of the teeth, causing tooth structure loss and a diminished capacity to chew. Slowing the decline is largely about prevention and education. SLOWING THE DECLINE intouch contributor

ALEX HUSZTI BELLEDENTAL Alex has had a career focused on lowbiologic cost reconstructive cosmetic dental care – common sense teeth for life.

“We’re not getting any younger…” I’m sure if you’re in your fifties, like myself, you can cast your mind back to when you could not only run 10 kilometres – but run it in a relatively fast time. I no longer run – I find it a bit

modifications in behaviour that will greatly reduce patients’ dental decline and, of course, regular coaching around home care techniques. The most worrying decline that I see is related to the rapid decline of the amount of sound tooth structure the patient has. This decline in sound tooth structure is hastened by the aggressive use of conventional crowns, where significant amounts of tooth structure are removed in the name of restoration. This is also often true of conventional bridges where the teeth on either side of a space are prepared for conventional crowns – rendering the teeth on either side of the space in a precarious position. Failure of one or both of these supporting teeth and the space gets bigger by at least one tooth – maybe by two teeth! The use of adhesive technology coupled with more tooth conserving techniques around bridges (e.g. Maryland bridges) and crowns (e.g. Belledental CRCs) can invoke a five-fold decrease in the loss of sound tooth structure, ensuring there are teeth available for the next restorative cycle. Ultimately, the recipe for dental stability and teeth for life is about executing the fundamentals with excellence, being conservative as possible every step of the road covered in a special sauce of planning and education.

3 Techniques That SAVE Your Teeth 1

Belledental CRC’s (Composite Resin Crowns) CRC’s can rebuild teeth to a similar appearance, strength and functionality of conventional crowns with the added benefits of being much more conservative of tooth structure, repairable, and ONE appointment restorations that are often HALF the fee of conventional crowns.

2

Direct Resin Veneers (Zero cutting of tooth)

3

Direct Resin Build-ups – All in ONE day! What if you have suffered with erosion... you have already lost much of your tooth structure – the last thing you need is your teeth being CUT AWAY EVEN MORE for crowns. Direct Resin Build-ups are a NO CUT, one day alternative that saves the remaining tooth structure and enhances the cosmetics and function of your teeth. They often require modifications to your bite to accomodate your new smile.

Direct Resin Veneers have a multitude of uses – they can be used to improve function, enhance the colour and shape of teeth, modify tooth position as well as in this case, restore teeth that have suffered trauma. Direct Resin Veneers can do this without cutting teeth – all in one visit.

COUNCILLOR CAROL DUNAN, PERFORMER HANNAH INDIGO, JASMINE FLETCHER FROM QUEER AND NOW AND LORD MAYOR NUATALI NELMES

Three Essential Products to Help Prevent Foot Pain Inspired by warmer weather, Australians are embracing more physical activity. To help you enjoy your favourite activities pain-free, The Good Feet Store and Dr Pamela Mehta, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and recreational athlete, share three recommendations to provide comfort and improve body mechanics. "Foot mechanics affect your whole body, especially the lower extremity joints, such as the ankles, knees, hips and back, and therefore your total alignment," explains Dr Mehta. "When the feet are not properly supported, the body can become misaligned, leading to frequent aches, pain and inflammation, which can hinder an active lifestyle. There are simple, unexpected tools that people of all ages should consider to ensure greater overall comfort." Invest in personally fitted arch supports. When it comes to supporting your feet, softer and cushier doesn't necessarily mean better. If you're planning to spend time on your feet, you need more structure to align your feet in the proper position and support the foot's four aches. Personally fitted arch supports can be a real game-changer and one of the 58 intouch

best self-care investments you can make. Available in more than 300 sizes and styles, Good Feet Arch Supports are designed to promote stability and alleviate strain in the feet and lower extremity joints, leading to more comfort, stronger performance and reduced pain. Not having the proper support can often lead to common foot ailments, such as plantar fasciitis or metatarsalgia. Practice in compression socks. Compression socks can provide support and relief to previous foot and ankle injuries by enhancing blood flow to the legs. A smart choice is OS1st Compression Socks, which utilise Compression Zone Technology® ranging from light to firm levels to offer the orthopaedic benefits of a bracing device, which can help prevent further damage. Massage, stretch and pamper your feet daily. At the end of the day, it's important to stretch and strengthen your foot muscles, providing increased stability, balance and foot function. The Foot Gym by OS1st is a handy, all-in-one tool that easily facilitates several foot exercises and can rehab those suffering from plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, and other foot injuries.

Moving Forward…

Together

It's fair to say that we're all happy to see this year in the rearview mirror. And whilst we can tentatively look forward to the coming year, it's also fair to say that we've all learned a lot over the past 18 months – first and foremost being that you never quite know what's around the corner. We've also learned that adversity builds community, and with that has come a whole host of projects and support that quite possibly have never seen the light of day. Here's a small taste of what's to come in 2022 and beyond for your local area – visit www. intouchmagazine.com.au for daily updates.

FUNDING SUPPORT TAKES ENTERTAINMENT OUTDOORS

Newcastle's COVID-19disrupted performing arts and live music industries will be reinvigorated by a new initiative that will see emerging performers work with experienced professionals to deliver live events in suburban parks, with opportunities for emerging creatives who will present live music and performances at eight

events held in Gregson Park, Centennial Park, Jesmond Park and Lambton Park on weekends throughout January. City of Newcastle Interim Director Strategy and Engagement Kathleen Hyland said taking live music and performances outdoors this summer is a COVID safe way to bring the local community back together safely after the prolonged lockdown period. "It's been a challenging time for the performing arts sector and live music industry in Newcastle. I hope people get a boost from visiting their local park, joining with friends and family and enjoying the energy and atmosphere of live performances while supporting Newcastle's cultural scene," Ms Hyland said. The initiative is funded under the City of Newcastle and follows the December round of Locally Made and Played grant funding, which will see more than 80 live music, micro theatre and comedystyle performances held across the city in the lead up to Christmas between 1 - 20 December 2021. Visit the City of Newcastle's What's On page for more information.

An exciting opportunity awaits inspired architects, with City of Newcastle and property developers St Hilliers and The Spotlight Property Group launching a design competition to redevelop 711 Hunter Street in the city's revitalised West-end. The competition brief requires two towers in the design, approximately 90 metres high, with up to 250 dwellings and 1,500 square metres of commercial floor space, at an estimated construction cost of $100 million. BE POOL SAFE THIS SUMMER!

Cessnock City Council has launched a campaign urging residents to Be Pool Safe this summer. During the year to 30 June 2021, 294 people tragically drowned in Australian waterways and backyard pools. Heartbreakingly, deaths among children aged 0-4 years increased by 108% compared with the previous year. Cessnock City Council's General Manager, Lotta Jackson, said Council would like to remind residents it is a requirement for all pools, including portable and inflatable pools, to be separated from the house and yard by a compliant pool barrier. "Regulations state that you must have a foursided fence around any pool or spa that can be filled with more than 30 centimetres of water. This includes inflatable and portable swimming pools. Portable or inflatable pools that have a capacity greater than 2,000 litres require Council approval. "Sadly, 20 seconds and a few centimetres of water is all it takes for a child to drown. In the end, nothing can replace the constant supervision of children by a responsible adult," added Lotta. Horo Scope ASTROLOGER TANYA OBREZA ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH.

STAR OF THE MONTH CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY This year Jupiter encourages you to reach out in as many directions as possible. Jot down all your ideas and intuitive flashes so they're not forgotten by the time you need them. Widen your circle of contacts if you can. Relationships with siblings and close family should also improve perhaps even bring a reconciliation. It's also an excellent time to make significant investments of lasting value, such as real estate. Other potentials include greater interest in your community. Perhaps, too, close friends or family become more prosperous. Travel could be on the agenda, especially short trips related to work or family matters. Just beware of extravagance.

ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL As Jupiter moves through your sector of subconscious and psychic sensitivity over the next year, Ariens learn even more about the spiritual dimensions of their lives. If you feel more spiritually protected - you are. And if you need to be taught or healed, a guardian or new mentor will be close by. The really lovely news? If and when you truly need help, it's likely to arrive - sometimes from the most unexpected sources.

VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER Sociable Jupiter steps into your house of friendships and fun and stays for an entire year. Jupiter will take all of your favourite things, like love, parties, children and entertainment - and make them even better. Venus, too, has surprises up her sleeve. This sexually-alluring planet triggers the law of attraction your way. Money should also come more easily. Just don't take foolish risks. Clear credit cards, don't add to them.

TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY Jupiter becomes a favourite houseguest this year, bringing joy, new friendships and optimism - as well as unlimited potential. As we rarely get something for nothing, expect some hard work as well. Be prepared to ditch dead-end plans. This will ready you for the new challenges ahead. Travel, love and laughter also feature. Fortunately, money is not too much of a problem, so you can afford to play as hard as you work.

LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER You're good at making money, Libra. Even more so this year. Splitting expenses will help, as does an untapped new source of income - which means you could end 2022 feeling much more financially comfortable. Playful Jupiter also sparks a plethora of pleasurable appetites. Your capacity for personal enjoyment expands, as could your waistline. Just don't overdo a good thing—everything in moderation.

GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE Jupiter brings a year of increased work satisfaction via a new job or better career or financial conditions. If you haven't yet found your proper calling, you'll probably do so now. And with Jupiter in this most public of places, you may also receive a tad more attention. So rather than trying to avoid the limelight - take this opportunity to flaunt your ambitions to a wider world as new frontiers become real possibilities.

AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY If money and possessions are your priority this year, a generous Jupiter can promote a substantial increase in cash flow. At times it may even seem you're blessed with the Midas touch. Although it may not be a huge windfall, your financial circumstances could greatly improve. If your values are more spiritual, then expect personal growth in this area. Of course, there's no reason why it can't be a combination of the two.

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY Jupiter is happy in the 9th house, it's natural placement. So if you've suffered any self-doubts recently, this positive planet's influence should help you get back on track. This next year can also have a powerful maturing influence - a time of personal and spiritual growth. Expect some beneficial contact with those living overseas - so listen up when you hear an interesting accent. You may also move house this year, perhaps long distance.

PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH January marks the beginning of a new 13year cycle. Think back 13 years, and you may recognise that then, too, was a time of good fortune or new beginnings. In 2022, a confident Jupiter promises significant change, particularly a brand-new image. If single, prepare for a veritable parade of admirers. If attached, expect to be especially close to your partner. This is also likely to be a year of travel and gaining new experience.

LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST This year Jupiter transits your sector of property, joint finances and intimate partnerships. For some, this can indicate an inheritance or financial benefit - possibly via a windfall. Whatever happens, it's a time when Jupiter encourages you to try something new. Your mind is energised, you're busier with friends, projects and meetings. But, don't rule out passion either - kiss those loveless nights goodbye.

66 intouch

SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER Thanks to a super-confident Jupiter this year, you find the courage to be yourself without fear or apology. Work, too, is a happier place to be - especially for those involved in creative work. Singles may marry or form a relationship with an older or mature individual - very likely, karmic in nature. The great news? The promise of a love that lasts. For those with children, this is a year when you could feel particularly proud of them. SAGITTARIUS 22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER This year, it's time to put down emotional roots. Family numbers may grow, perhaps through marriage or a partner, a new flatmate, birth or even a new pet. Parents could offer also help, be it financial or otherwise. One special individual, in particular, could inspire you towards new ventures. But you may also have to face a few truths about yourself, even those you'd rather not acknowledge.

It was during her first visit to England that Tanya was introduced to astrology, and in 1980 she gained her London Faculty of Astrological Studies qualifications.
