Drama, opera, musicals and dance are at the forefront of this issue – it seems we are all busting to get out and about and be entertained! This month you can follow the adventures of Shrek and his loyal side-kick Donkey for two fabulous weeks as they attempt to rescue Princess Fiona from her tower, guarded by a love-sick, fire-breathing dragon. Add the vertically challenged Lord Farquaad, a gang of fairytale misfits, and a biscuit with attitude, and you've got an irresistible mix of adventure, laughter and romance guaranteed to delight audiences of all ages. This exciting musical will be brought to life by Newcastle's Metropolitan Players, who this year will celebrate 45 years of staging high-quality productions for Newcastle audiences, starring local talent. Read more on page 20, and don't wait too long to buy tickets, as it's bound to be another sellout! Catapult Choreographic Hub welcomes Jasmin Sheppard to a three-week residency this month to develop material for a full-length dance work premiering in 2023. Jasmin will be working with professional artists Alexandra Ford, Shana O'Brien, Kyle Ramboyong and Jack Tuckerman to develop the work. There will be a showing and an artist Q&A at the end of the residency. Read more on page 15. Then later this month, Opera Australia returns to Newcastle with The Barber of Seville. The stage is set for comic chaos and irrepressibly funny characters with this opera that is light-hearted and effervescent. Opera Australia's finest voices assemble with a live orchestra and a local children's chorus, the Hunter Trebles, to deliver an instantly familiar score. Read more on page 17. And if it's not on this month, then it's coming up (and you'd better get in and get your tickets!). Swan Lake, Elton John, Van Gogh Alive and plenty more - they're all on their way to Newcastle. Enjoy!

Letting Go Explored Through Dance INTERVIEW LIANE MORRIS Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub Newcastle is a contemporary dance and multi-arts organisation that offers residencies as part of its Propel program. The residencies are offered to emerging and mid-career artists to foster artistic interchange and link artists in capital cities with artists based in the Hunter. This August, Catapult welcomes Jasmin Sheppard to a three-week residency to develop material for a full-length dance work premiering in 2023. Jasmin Sheppard is a contemporary dancer, choreographer and director, and a Tagalaka Aboriginal woman with Irish, Chinese and Hungarian ancestry. Jasmin spent 12 years at Bangarra Dance Theatre as one of their lead performers, has been nominated for and won various awards and has directed and choreographed major dance works within Australia and overseas to critical acclaim. Jasmin will be working with professional artists Alexandra Ford, Shana O’Brien, Kyle Ramboyong and Jack Tuckerman to develop the work. We caught up with Jasmin to ask her about her process.
How does the process work? I begin with a rough idea of themes and images I’d like to explore. Then as collaboration begins to unfold with the dancers, those elements grow. I work with many long improvisational sessions, then pull out the magic parts of those sessions and build upon them. What themes will you be working with? I recently lost my grandmother, and I felt compelled to explore what we leave behind when we leave this place - and what objects and people we carry along with us and have to let go of. As First Nations people, I think we deeply recognise this attachment to people, places and things through our cultural practice of not naming those recently passed or sharing their image or voice. This is to assist them in letting go of the things of this place, so their journey back to the Dreaming is less inhibited. Do you include non-indigenous dancers and themes since leaving Bangarra? Yes, as an artist of mixed heritage, I do enjoy exploring a wide range of ideas and concepts. I also work with a wide range of people from
many different cultural backgrounds. There’s so much to learn from each other. How important is the work of Catapult? As an artist based on the Central Coast, Catapult is my nearest professional choreographic space, so I can be at home and be working creatively. The organisation is vital to the region and the vibrancy of work available to artists of the area. What are the core messages you are trying to convey with your work? I like to explore the dark and murky parts of Australia’s shared history and the impacts of colonisation on First Nations people and immigrants who arrived here under the White Australia Policy. I have done my job when audience members leave more enlightened and educated on the truth of the foundations of this country. Knowing these truths is a right for all Australians. At the end of the development process, there will be a showing and an artist Q&A at Catapult on 19 and 20 August @ 7:30pm. Visit www. catapultdance.com.au for more information (tickets at the door).

See You at The Civic! THERE ARE PLENTY OF GREAT REASONS TO VISIT THE CIVIC THEATRE THIS MONTH – COMEDY, MUSICALS, OPERA, DRAMA AND MORE!
Opening in August, The Sapphires is an uplifting Australian classic, full of comedy, heart and romance, together with unforgettable soul music. Set in the heady days of the late 60s, a quartet of talented young singers from a remote aboriginal mission are discovered and guided by a kind-hearted, soul-loving manager. Written and directed by Tony Briggs, this multi-awardwinning musical play was inspired by the remarkable true story of Briggs' mother. The laughs keep coming with Civic Theatre
and Big Dog Comedy presenting another comedy lineup for Civic Comedy Club on 12 August. Serving up a smorgasbord of brilliant comedians for some funny-bone tickling of the highest order, venture out for a night of laughs in the Playhouse. Then later this month, Opera Australia returns to Newcastle with The Barber of Seville. Beyond haircuts and beard trims, the Barber of Seville is the city's matchmaking maestro! Almaviva is wealthy, stealthy, and head over heels. Rosina is witty, pretty, and equally smitten. She's also betrothed. Time to call on Figa-ro! Figaro! Figaro! The stage is set for comic
chaos and irrepressibly funny characters - this is opera at its light-hearted, effervescent best. Opera Australia's finest voices assemble with a live orchestra and a local children's chorus, the Hunter Trebles, to deliver an instantly familiar score. Next month, get ready for Civic Theatre to be taken over by New Annual Festival with some incredible shows, including Bell Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors, Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub's Grappling for the Edge and Airness by Knock + Run Theatre Co. In addition, Civic Theatre has two special feature productions for New Annual - Radial and Trolleys. Filmed using a circular camera track, Radial is a live improvisation performance by Back to Back Theatre captured as a continuous sequence, combined with intimate depictions of single individuals in dedicated spaces across Newcastle. Once complete, Civic Theatre will screen the resulting film for all to see! Trolleys by Shaun Parker and Company is part dance, part ballet and part outdoor spectacle. Five shopping carts randomly appear in a public space. Two meet and fall in love. A lone cart grapples to find a friend while three others revolt and ignite a dance of anarchy. See you at the Civic soon! For more, visit www.civictheatrenewcastle.com.au.

No Ordinary Art Exhibition
at Van Gogh Alive A multi-sensory experience that has attracted more than eight and a half million people across 80+ cities around the world will be the centrepiece of the City of Newcastle's second New Annual festival in September when Grande Experiences, Andrew Kay, BBC Studios, and Fane, in partnership with Lexus, present the global sensation Van Gogh Alive, an incredible immersive multi-sensory experience, for the first time in the Grand Pavilion. Van Gogh's works have been displayed and enjoyed worldwide for over a century – but never like this. For a limited time, audiences will have the unique opportunity to fully experience Van Gogh's artistry and truly immerse themselves in his world. Presented in a specially designed 2,300-square-metre gallery known as The Grand Pavilion, which will be set up at Newcastle's premier major event space, Foreshore Park, Van Gogh Alive features more than 3,000 high-definition images of the artist's work, projected at a scale that allows visitors to experience the paintings like never before. Make no mistake – this is no ordinary art exhibition. Van Gogh Alive sets aside the traditions of tiptoeing through silent galleries and viewing paintings from afar in quiet contemplation, as visitors find themselves interacting with 18
art in ways they never imagined. From start to finish, visitors are surrounded by a vibrant symphony of light, colour, sound, and fragrance that has been described as an 'unforgettable' multi-sensory experience. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said attracting Van Gogh Alive is a coup for Newcastle that will enhance the city's reputation for hosting world-class events while boosting the local economy by attracting thousands of visitors. "We're excited to partner with Andrew Kay Management to bring the impressive Van Gogh Alive to a regional city for the first time in Australia as part of our New Annual festival," Cr Nelmes said. The Grand Pavilion features a visually stunning wrap-around floral exterior and spectacular immersive foyers, including an exact recreation of Van Gogh's famous painting of the Café Terrace at Night. Designed by Australian designer Anna Cordingley, the Grand Pavilion also houses two immersive areas: The Sunflower Infinity Room and a walk-through immersive recreation of arguably Van Gogh's most famous painting, Starry Night. Don't miss this art event of the year. Newcastle will host Van Gogh Alive from 22 September until 23 October at Foreshore Park. Visit www.vangoghalive.com.au for more information and tickets.

Metropolitan Players Present…
Shrek the Musical! 20
WORDS LIANE MORRIS IMAGES MORGAN CREEK (ALICE PHOTOGRAPHY) THE BROADWAY FAMILY SMASH HIT SHREK THE MUSICAL FIRST OPENED ON BROADWAY IN 2008, ENJOYED A SPECTACULAR WEST END SEASON FROM 2011-2013, AND NOW NEWCASTLE'S OWN METROPOLITAN PLAYERS IS BRINGING IT TO NEWCASTLE AUDIENCES AT THE CIVIC THEATRE THIS MONTH FOR NINE PERFORMANCES ONLY. Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film Shrek, Shrek the Musical brings the hilarious story of everyone's favourite ogre to life on the stage. With a fairy tale cast and fabulous singing and dancing, this lavish musical is a monster-sized spectacular that the whole family will love. Follow the adventures of Shrek and his loyal side-kick Donkey as they attempt to rescue Princess Fiona from her tower, guarded by a love-sick, fire-breathing dragon. Add the vertically challenged Lord Farquaad, a gang of fairy-tale misfits, and a biscuit with attitude, and you've got an irresistible mix of adventure, laughter and romance guaranteed to delight audiences of all ages.
This exciting musical is brought to life by the Metropolitan Players, who also staged the smash hit Priscilla Queen of the Desert at the Civic Theatre in 2021. The Metropolitan Players are this year celebrating 45 years of staging high-quality productions for Newcastle audiences, starring local talent. First established in 1977 after The Independent Theatre Company and the Hunter Valley Drama Society dissolved, this dedicated group of volunteers have developed a reputation for staging musicals of a very high standard. President of the Metropolitan Players, Graeme Black, is rightly proud of everything they have achieved over the years. "There's a lot of competition in Newcastle for the theatre-goer audience," said Graeme. "Because of this, our standards need to be very high. We've got a dedicated committee of regulars who form the backbone of the company, but for every single show we stage, we run open auditions. There is an incredible array of talent in our city, and we're very proud of the small part we play in providing opportunities for growth and skill building in
theatre arts – whether that's acting, technical skills or backstage craft." A critical member of Graeme's team is his very talented wife, Julie Black, who has been the resident director of musicals since 1983. The two met when they were both performing on stage together in a production of Mame, and these days, they are the only two original members of the Metropolitan Players still involved. Julie had major surgery on her back in 1983 and could no longer perform. The Metropolitan Players were going through a difficult period, and there were no directors available to stage their productions. Julie decided that she could still direct even if she was unable to perform and took up the role of director for one show to give it a try. Almost 40 years later, she has directed every musical production bar one, and she hasn't looked back, discovering a love for nurturing talent and pride in her casting choices. Auditions for Metropolitan Players are open to anyone who thinks they can perform. Casting choices are often a mix of highly experienced performers with those who are just starting out. 21
L-R: RORY POLLOCK (LORD FARQUAAD), DANNY FOLPP (SHREK), LIZZY LINDUS (FIONA) AND LUKE ASPINALL (DONKEY).
Julie looks for talent rather than experience, and the decisions can be tough due to the breadth of talent and experience on offer in Newcastle, often leading to callbacks to help narrow down her choices. Over the years, the Metropolitan Players have staged some of the best musical productions ever written, including The Phantom of the Opera (2013), Grease (2011), Mary Poppins (2015), The Boy from Oz (2010), My Fair Lady (2004), Beauty and the Beast (2019), We Will Rock You (2018), Wicked (2016) and Hairspray (2014) to name just a few. More recently, they've begun staging dramatic pieces such as The 39 Steps (2020), The Woman in Black (2021) and earlier this year, the comedy, Keeping Up Appearances (2022). The inclusion of plays along with the musicals is a strategic decision that is designed to ensure the longevity of the organisation – something that is on Graeme's mind. "We are succession planning at the moment, and are keen to get some younger talent involved at an organisational level. We want younger perspectives, fresh ideas and different points of view. But, of course, neither Julie nor I will simply walk away. We would never do that, but I do think that it might be nice to step down as President and let someone else have a go. 22
We're happy to mentor those that come after us, and we'll continue to be involved for a long time to come." "It's important that we stage different pieces now. There are many amateur theatre companies in Newcastle, and we're all looking to fill our own niche. Staging plays is a way to grow our audience base by attracting new people to our shows." Newcastle is indeed home to a significant number of theatre groups. According to research by Dr Shane Bransdon as part of his PhD at the University of Newcastle, there are 48 theatre groups in the region performing, on average, around 118 productions per year and not one of them is considered professional. Theatre is considered professional when all involved are paid appropriate rates. The 48 non-professional theatre groups all share an audience of just 20 per cent of the population. The great challenge of the local theatre industry is to grow this audience pool. Under this definition, there is literally no professional theatre in Newcastle. "We're all vying for the same audience," said Graeme. "So, there's no point in all doing the same. It's critical for our survival to stand out. The primary difference with the Metropolitan Players is that
we stage the big musicals with high production values in terms of staging and talent. At the same time, that's incredibly expensive, so it's a balancing act and one of the reasons we've started producing plays. They attract a different audience and introduce them to our brand whilst at the same time, are slightly less expensive to produce." "Although no one gets paid, and we're all volunteers, we have to run our organisation as a business. People don't realise that our productions can cost upwards of $350,000 to stage. By the time you take into consideration the costs of insurances, warehousing and storage space, sets and costumes, not to mention venue hire, that's a lot to recoup with ticket sales and why building our audience is so important." When asked how he would respond to those who doubt the quality and are concerned by the non-professional nature of the Metropolitan Players, Graeme throws down a challenge. "Just come once," he said. "You can't criticise something unless you try it first. Most people are very pleasantly surprised. Our standards are very high." Covid has also played a big part in the risk factors of running a theatrical organisation, the size and the quality of Metropolitan Players. The
2021 production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert had to be postponed three times due to covid and put the organisation at financial risk. With the inability to stage productions, there was no income. This lack of income was another reason that the team decided to branch out into staging plays, as they are cost-effective, quicker to launch and help fund the major musicals. Another change that covid has cemented is the use of understudies. Prior to We Will Rock You in 2018, the company didn't include regular understudies for major roles. During that production, one of the stars became quite ill, and an understudy had to be found with only a couple of hours run through in preparation. Covid has now made this a necessity because any cast or crew could come down with the virus at any point. "We're listening to news reports right now as we rehearse Shrek the Musical about the spike in numbers of covid cases. We take every precaution so that none of our cast or crew gets ill, and we encourage mask wearing." Risk minimisation is another reason why big productions like Shrek the Musical are chosen in the first place. The shows need to be able to attract a large audience, and the audiences need to have confidence that they will enjoy the show. Appealing to different sectors in the
community is important too. The audience for last year's Priscilla Queen of the Desert will be quite different than the audience for Shrek the Musical, which will attract families and include children as young as five years old. The other factor contributing to the selection of productions is whether or not the rights can easily be obtained. Graeme has noticed that the rights for a number of older productions are currently not available, and he suspects that they will be having a professional revival on Broadway or the West End, leaving the amateur or semi-professional theatre companies with less stock to choose from. More contemporary shows can be riskier, so the choices become more restricted. Despite the risks, however, Shrek the Musical promises to be a dazzling production. Some of the set and several costumes have been sourced through Packemin Productions, who staged the musical in 2018 in Sydney, starring Jay Laga'aia as Shrek. The Metropolitan Players' production has a cast of 36 people with an orchestra of 15. It stars Danny Folpp as Shrek, Lizzy Lindus as Fiona, Luke Aspinall as Donkey and Rory Pollock as Lord Farquaad. Danny Folpp has a long list of acting credits to his name, including Beauty and the Beast and Grease, and directing credits, including
Keeping Up Appearances earlier this year for The Metropolitan Players. Lizzy Lindus is a regular children's theatre performer with The Little Scallywagz and The Jolly Pirates on her list of credits. Luke Aspinall directs and acts in both musicals and plays, and Rory Pollock is regularly seen on Newcastle stages. In fact, Rory has played Lord Farquaad previously in the 2016 Hunter Drama production of Shrek the Musical Jr. "The talent in Newcastle is truly incredible," said Graeme. "We love to be a training ground for actors and technicians of theatre craft. Nothing is more exciting than watching the development of our talent and then witnessing their career progression. A number of past Metropolitan Players have done really well for themselves, becoming theatre professionals with successful careers in both Australia and overseas." David Harris, a multiple award-winning actor who now divides his time between New York and Australia, was a previous performer for Metropolitan Players and starred in their 1995 production of Grease. Jye Frasca, who also starred alongside Harris in Grease for Metropolitan Players, has worked on Broadway and London's West End performing in Wicked and Jersey Boys, among other roles. The success of these and other previous Metropolitan Players stands as a testament to the value of the organisation and inspiration for any new talent that gets involved in the productions. Graeme and Julie both consider Metropolitan Players a valuable pathway for the large number of performing arts students within the Newcastle region. "There's a lot going on for kids and teens in terms of performance in our local area, so we think that what we do is offer an opportunity for those who have left school to explore whether or not the theatre is something they wish to continue to pursue. It also helps them build their adult credits, adding to their performance c.v., skill sets and experiences." One thing is for certain, Newcastle audiences are in for a treat this August. Staged against the backdrop of the stately Civic Theatre with spectacular set design and costumes, Shrek the Musical is an ideal family experience for all ages. Guaranteed to thrill the young ones and tickle the funny bones of their grown-ups, it's a spectacle that's worth the outing and making a special occasion of it to grow family memories. Tickets are on sale now for a season that runs from 10 to 20 August through the Civic Theatre box office or visit - www. civictheatrenewcastle.com.au 23

Elton John will rock McDonald Jones Stadium during an upcoming international tour as the first major event in a partnership between City of Newcastle and Venues NSW. The Farewell Yellow Brick Road: The Final Tour concert will be the first time Elton has performed in Newcastle with previous visits to the area, landing him on stages in the Hunter Valley. The show is bound to be a sellout show, filling the stadium's 30,000 seats. The additional capacity will change the touring landscape, with lots of tours not leaving the capital cities due to the size of the production and the ability to be able to sell enough tickets to cover the cost of the tour. Elton John is also one of those artists that are not only pulling a crowd from a certain demographic. He would, at this point, be considered a heritage artist who has gained a new audience during every generational shift. Thanks to the irreverent songs written by him and Bernie Taupin, his music has certainly stood the test of time.
Thanks to Almost Famous, people who weren't born when he began his career knew all the words to Tiny Dancer. Thanks also to the movie Sing, my 11-year-old sings along passionately to I'm Still Standing when it comes on, and PNAU's remix of Cold Heart, which samples several of Elton's songs, is a constant on our current Spotify playlist in the car. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said, "Newcastle is once again showing Australia and the world that we're a global events city, attracting one of the biggest names in music, Elton John, to play a stadium concert in front of thousands of cheering Novocastrians and tourists,". Between The Rocket Man hitting the Newcastle city limits on January 10 and at least three as yet unannounced international tours set to head to the Hunter this summer, for the first time in a few years, locals will once again be spoiled for choice. We are all thrilled to have found our way back. and includes a premium food and beverage package including major auction items, raffle prizes, live music and entertainment. With tickets selling out in record time, McCloy Family Foundation CEO Hayley Van de Stadt said she was delighted that, with all event overheads being covered by the McCloy Group, 100 per cent of ticket sales and earnings on the night would go directly to Jenny’s Place. Jenny’s Place was selected as the 2022 charity partner for their life-changing
work amongst women and children in our community. They have provided relief and support to those who are experiencing domestic violence or homelessness since they established their first women’s refuge in Newcastle in 1977. Their dedicated team supports more than 1,200 women each year. They are committed to keeping women and children in our community safe, housed and free from violence and aim to help their clients break the cycle of violence and live secure lives. “Domestic violence is a serious issue in Australia and the Hunter region. Too many women continue to lose their lives to their intimate partners each year. Thousands more live in fear in violent relationships,” says Executive Manager Marcia Chapman. “We are honoured to be the charity partner for the McCloy Family Foundation’s first Gala event,” Ms Chapman added. “The funds will enable our early intervention and prevention services to be delivered through the Newcastle Domestic Violence Resource Centre. They will also contribute to supporting children in our care with counselling when they need it most and raise awareness in the community about Jenny’s Place services.” Find out more at mccloyfamilyfoundation. com.au/events-gala

Love Story
Performed By International Stars The Royal Czech Ballet will visit Australia for the first time in September/October with Swan Lake – arguably the world's most loved classical ballet. The Royal Czech Ballet company comprises elite dancers from Europe, including Italy, Moldova and Ukraine and was formed in the Czech Republic in 2008.
Artistic Director and Company Founder Andrey Scharaev is delighted that the company has the opportunity to present this magnificent ballet to local audiences. "In this difficult time for everyone, when there is a conflict in Ukraine, we want to bring good through our art. We have an international
company with dancers from different European countries, including Ukraine. The theatre is something that has always united people and always will do," said Mr Scharaev. Set to the magnificent score of Tchaikovsky, Swan Lake is the most romantic of all the classical ballets. This superb piece is presented in two acts and follows the original storyline with traditional choreographic revisions by Marius Pepita. Swan Lake is Prince Siegfried's love story, who falls in love with Odette. Odette is under a spell, where she is a swan by day and turns into a woman at night. The spell can only be broken by a man who will pledge his love forever. It is a story where the virtues of love and forgiveness ultimately conquer evil and betrayal. Swan Lake, performed by the Royal Czech Ballet, can be enjoyed at the Civic Theatre in Newcastle on Sunday 23 October, with two performances - 2pm and 7pm. The performances offer ballet enthusiasts their first opportunity since the Covid-19 pandemic to enjoy an international ballet company visiting our part of the world and is one not to be missed. Horo Scope ASTROLOGER TANYA OBREZA ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH.
STAR OF THE MONTH LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST Get ready to dig deep, Leo. You're heading into a year of gradual metamorphosis. This will require considerable self-analysis and probing into your past, but all the work will be worth it. You start to discover just how strong and resilient you are. If you have ever doubted your strength, by your next birthday, you'll never question your confidence and resourcefulness again. In the meantime, as this year progresses, you're more able to pursue your heart's desire - and if you can allocate time for what you love each day, life becomes infinitely more rewarding.
VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER It's my guess you need a rest, Virgo. Take advantage of August, which offers a spot of relaxation: maybe some contemplation. Find somewhere warm - kick through the sand, or curl up under the doona. Some of you, though, may find it hard to slam on the brakes. Try, or you'll end up exhausted when work spurs into overdrive after the 24th. In the meantime, open up to the possibility of love - it could be closer than you think. LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER August puts forward a strong argument for change. My guess is that you become more assertive, as well as more ambitious. The latter half of the month is also an ideal time for new studies, professional growth or for embarking on promising new business ventures. Whatever happens, keep faith with the spirit that drives you. If extra work hours are required, don't grumble - the gains will be well worth it. 28
READ ONLINE SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER No one has a completely drama-free existence - we've all made mistakes. Consider, though, that these so-called "errors" of judgement are simply learning tools towards wisdom and compassion. Forgive others and yourself. Forget past hurts and keep moving forward. There is so much more to experience and love. By month's end, social invitations become easier to accept.
ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL Your month could open up by taking the road less travelled. Sudden opportunities or chance encounters are likely. And you may finally be freed from a tense situation - great news for those who've been feeling overwhelmed. After the 24th, keep an eye out for inspiration that hints at your next step. Late August also promises a time of luck and, perhaps, romance. Enjoy the journey.
SAGITTARIUS 22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER A relentless Mars sends you into a work frenzy this month. Your mind overflows with brilliant thoughts, and you're bursting with imaginative new ideas. Even if your regular work involves little creativity, you'll be busy dreaming up new ventures. The only downside: a sense of agitation after the 19th. Take a break, if you can. So unfair to have a month of all work and no play.
TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY This month brings sweeping changes. Prepare to push all professional projects during the first half of August. Happily, the second half will be better spent socialising and having fun. Emotional freedom is also important. You want a free hand to make your own choices and to assert your individuality - without compromise. If you make the occasional mistake, don't fret. The spirit can only grow when challenged.
CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY The planets tinker with your dream states, and, as a result, your intuition heightens - as do any latent clairvoyant abilities. Should your inner voice whisper sound advice, stop and listen. Those feeling a tad sexier than usual can look forward to a romantic fling. Watch your expectations, though, as this isn't a rocksolid phase. For happy couples, love grows more passionate and perhaps a tad more experimental. AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY Yours is a straight-down-the-line sign - never afraid to tell it like it is. You want only the very best, and in August, you intend to get it. Your heart is pounding, your mind is racing - and you're ready for change. The cosmos also introduces much-needed playfulness, as well as the kind of good fortune that affords a few luxuries. Even in your love life, you dare to be even sassier. PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH August finds you taking a chisel to long-held beliefs that no longer serve a purpose. Your attention now shifts away from the inner world and towards the outer. Should emotional issues chip away at your relationships, new ground rules will need to be applied. Unfortunately, this may mean that some ties are broken. Whatever happens, you feel more empowered by the decisions you make. After all, they'll be your own.
GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE For too long, Geminis have weathered tough times, and you've been worn down by all the nonsense that the heavens can muster. So, at what stage do you say "enough"? Well, as long as you're still breathing - you have precious little choice but to go where life leads you. Don't worry. You've clocked up plenty of positive karma. You're about to cash in on many welldeserved rewards. CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY Does the past seem more alluring than the present? Don't get too stuck in rose-coloured nostalgia. Clinging to times gone by can shut out today's reality. If you've experienced a loss or breakup, this is a normal stage in the grieving process. But don't mistake this for depression - it's more a case of needing some time out for contemplation. Just come back soon, Cancer you're needed in the here and now.

WORDS LIANE MORRIS With over 50 local business members, the Wallsend Town Business Association is committed to promoting, beautifying and developing the precinct's local economy. And one of the most vibrant and multi-cultural offerings that Wallsend enjoys is that of the more than 23 different food outlets, restaurants and cafés that are to be found there. With everything from Italian, pub grub, noodle houses, Chinese, dumplings, kebabs, Japanese and club bistros and restaurants, Wayne Rogers, Chairperson of the Business Association, believes it's the place to be. "Wallsend is a one-stop eatery!" said Wayne. "There is so much variety on offer. It doesn't matter whether it's day or night; there's something for everyone to enjoy. It's the perfect place to shop, eat and stay." There is a strong community village vibe to Wallsend that many business owners mention when asked about why they run their businesses in the town. Chef at Café Tempest, Rhys Walter, who has been in business in Wallsend for ten years, credits the connected community with how they've managed to survive Covid.
"We've got a motto that we live by at Café Tempest," said Rhys. "Enter a stranger and leave as a friend. My mum Julie runs the business, and she knows everyone. The community rallies around and helps each other out whenever it's needed. Our homestyle cooking is popular – especially the rissoles. The recipe came from my grandmother's cookbook, and all the locals know it." Winnie Ng, owner and operator of Heng Loong Restaurant, agrees that the community is what makes the place so special. A leader in the local restaurant scene, Winnie and her husband, who both hail from Hong Kong, have been in business in Wallsend for 30 years and have seen the area's growth firsthand. "We've seen the area grow to include Maryland and Fletcher and watched as the businesses in the main street diversify. We've survived Covid because we have 30 years of loyal customers who support us, and we're very grateful for that," said Winnie. "We're also very proud to have been able to give something back to the community through the conversion of the old Wallsend Library into our restaurant space for Heng Loong."

“We took a good look at the new world order and decided to rethink things, to try a different approach. We want to give our guests more than they expect by offering a cleaner, more family-oriented approach to the leisure market and a more outdoor, festival-like approach to the corporate conferencing market. We’re using balconies, lawns, pool areas and all our outdoor spaces over our 60 acres to help eliminate the stress due to the threat of covid in enclosed spaces.” Aiding Michael with this new approach is Daniel Quitto, Executive Chef at the resort. Daniel has previously worked at the Hilton Hotel, Sydney, the Harbour View Hotel, The Rocks, and the hatted restaurant Mosaic at the Westin Hotel, Sydney, and has won awards for his designer cake business, Cake Evolution. As part of the executive chef team that catered to the Pan Pacific Games in Vanuatu, Daniel had the experience of cooking for the athletes for over a month and being in charge of a 30-person team of cooks, chefs and kitchen hands. His broad experience makes him ideal for heading up a facility with several dining offerings, large-capacity conferencing, and events.
“When I was a kid, eating out was a big deal. These days, food is very accessible, with endless options, and people know what’s good – they have high standards. We want to take a leadership role in how good food can be, providing healthier options, utilising local produce and ensuring that even with our most casual dining experience, it’s still of the finest standard possible.” “When it comes to being a successful chef, it’s not just about the food, but the culture that is in the kitchen. Without a supportive team that feels valued, a kitchen cannot thrive. Our team is not only extremely talented, but they are also from a very wide range of multicultural backgrounds. I encourage them to share their food influences through our specials. Chef Vinnie (Vinura de Silva, Executive Sous Chef) at our fine dining restaurant, Oak & Vine, takes that one step further with food influenced by his native Sri Lankan background, offset by his refined French techniques. No one else is doing this in the valley, and it’s exciting – it pushes the envelope.” Chef “Vinnie” began his hospitality journey at the Hilton Colombo as his work placement during his studies at the Sri Lanka Institute of

Tourism and Hotel Management at the age of 17. What followed was ten years of 5-star, global experience in Bahrain with the Rotana chain of hotels, Kandima in the Maldives, Bannisters in Port Stephens and then finally, to Oaks Cypress Lakes in 2019. “At first, I added a few Sri-Lankan dishes to the menu and noticed that diners were really enjoying them. Daniel was keen for me to expand the concept, utilising Sri-Lankan flavours with my classical French training. We take it to another level, and diners seem to enjoy it. I would love to have as many people as possible come and try the dishes that mean something so special to me,” says Vinnie. Recently the team were put to the test with a significant corporate event that catered to 700 people per day for five weeks, all staying in the accommodation and eating all meals at a cost of almost $5 million. There was a focus on health and wellness coupled with indulgence and fun. Special dietary considerations for such a large group were an exercise in logistics for the kitchen staff.
Luckily for Oaks Cypress Lakes Resort, the neighbouring Elysia Wellness Retreat, purchased by the Oaks Group two and a half years ago and previously known as the Golden Door Health Retreat, is now also part of the Oaks Resorts family and Chef Corryne Parkhill, Executive Chef at Elysia, is part of Daniel’s team. They worked together on the project, which has inspired them to make healthier options available on all the menus at Cypress Lakes. Chef Corryne is passionate about healthy food and the difference it can make in people’s lives. She works with a nutritionist to ensure that every meal offered at Elysia is personalised for the health needs of their guests, managing the dietary requirements of individuals with a giant blackboard and an enormous knowledge base of what each type of diet should contain. “I remember visits to farms to source produce as a kid, and my mum (also a Chef) was always focused on health and wellbeing, so it’s ingrained in me. I love that I’m always learning as our knowledge of health evolves. Our approach at Elysia is personalised and holistic, and I’m excited to be working with Daniel to deliver some of these healthy
wholefood offerings to Cypress Lakes,” says Corryne. With so much happening at Cypress Lakes, it’s worth a visit. The Bistro is family-friendly with both indoor and alfresco dining and serves up classics along with a full buffet breakfast every day and includes live entertainment over the weekends. The Member Bar is open Thursday to Saturday and features a chilled, laid-back sipping environment for all, especially members of the golf course. For fine dining, there’s Oak & Vine, also open Thursday to Saturday, serving up authentic Sri-Lankan and French fusion dishes. And finally, for the strictly health-conscious who happen to be enjoying the wellbeing programs at Elysia, attendees can order breakfast, lunch and dinner a la carte, catering to all allergies and dietary requirements. As Michael says, “We want everyone to know that we’re open again and that we want locals to feel as welcome as our visitors from further afield. We’re excited about our new approach and showcasing that to everyone.” To make a booking, call 4993 1555 or contact RBMCypressLakes@theoaksgroup. com.au. EAT DRINK TRAVEL •

NEWCASTLE NORTHSTARS RETURN TO AUSTRALIAN ICE HOCKEY LEAGUE FINALS IN 2022 WORDS COURTNEY KYNASTON-DODD IMAGES AK HOCKEY SHOTS After two years of disruption, the Newcastle Northstars have had a highly successful season in the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) in 2022, securing their finals campaign position with six games remaining in the season. Head Associate Coach Kevin Noble looked back on his plans for the season, saying, “Any time you can clinch a spot in the final four, that’s one of our goals accomplished. Any team that can put themselves in that position, that’s what you play all year for.” Captain Liam Manwarring shared the team’s joy in securing their finals position, “At the start of the year, we knew what we wanted to achieve, and our first accomplishment was to clinch in the finals and to do it in such a short amount of games is massive for the organisation, and it sends a statement to the league that we have got the best group in the competition.” The Newcastle Northstars organisation feels like family to those involved, and there have been milestones reached by several players,
which reflect a loyalty the club endears. This year has seen Patrick Ward and Richie Tesarik reach 50 games played in the Northstars jersey, John Kennedy and Liam Manwarring both hitting 100, Patrick Nadin and Bert Malloy both reaching 150 and Tim Stanger hitting 200. There have also been several first AIHL goals scored by Northstars players, with Riley Tonks, Daniel Berno, Mackenzie Gallagher, Connor Schultz, Ethan Hawes, David Jeremy, and Dash Quartarolo all reaching this personal milestone and adding depth to the team’s offensive play. Noble continued, “All year, we have been a team of many guys that add value that isn’t always reflected on the scoresheet. The character that the veteran guys have instilled in our organisation allows us to be in the position we are in. I am really happy that our guys have brought their own goals into the season to enable our success as a team." Head Coach and defenceman John Kennedy Jr shared his joy for clinching the finals spot and their plans for the remainder of the season. “Our success shows where our heads are at. We’re focused on getting better each and every game and giving a complete 60-minute effort every time we step on the ice. We’re going to be
using the remainder of the season to build our consistency, make sure guys are healthy and make sure we’re a complete team putting forth a complete effort.” The Northstars will finish their 2022 AIHL campaign on the road and compete for the Goodall Cup at the AIHL Finals in Melbourne from 2 to 4 September. For your chance to try hockey, the Learn to Play Ice Hockey program at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium has been developed by players who have represented Australia at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships. With competitions taking place all year round, and weekly social drop-in games, there are loads of opportunities to grow and play with others looking to join this fast and exciting sport. Learn to Play is run Monday nights from 5:45pm during the school term. If you don’t own skates, don’t worry! Skates are provided for all learn-to-skate and learn-toplay sessions! SELF-CARE MAKES LIFE BETTER FOR EVERYONE
I have been an absolute nightmare to be around just lately. Not the ideal opening sentence, I grant you, but the truth, nonetheless. It’s not even been by design or a conscious choice. I don’t know about you, but it’s been a rough few years. I am from a family of incredibly strong women, which I will be eternally grateful for. With a mantra of “No one can change your life except for you” (to steal a line from Wilson Phillips), our prevailing (albeit unspoken) sentiment has always been to get up and get on with it. Since she was born, it has just been the kid, and I and I’m so thankful for the special bond that we have as a result. She is this amazing child with a kind heart. She loves animals and has a lovely little group of friends. You always want your children to be a better, more evolved version of you. Partly because you have had a lifetime of experience, and you hope to teach them the lessons you learned. I had a moment the other day when I realised that she is better at something than I am. At first, I felt really proud, but I figured out it was a bit tragic. This realisation happened at the end of a long day. I ran a hot bath and had just gotten in. At that second, the bathroom door came flying open. The kid enters the room with her iPad and a note. A very well-written letter with beautiful pictures included explaining to me why she

needed 400 Robux (currency in an online game for those of you who don’t have kids that age). Now in a better frame of mind, I might have taken the time to admire the workmanship and be thrilled by the thoughtfulness of the approach. I might have appreciated her reasoning skills and been thankful to have raised a kid who was confident enough to ask for what she wanted. All this would have been the reaction of a calm, totally centred, reasonable human being. However, after doing 15 different things for other people across the day, cooking dinner, running to soccer practice, sorting out an impending crisis for a friend, caring for a sick family member, trying to work out what the unexplained growth was on my dog and stubbing my toe on something that I had been asking the kid to pick up for three straight days, what actually happened was a little less zen. What eventuated was a naked hissy fit that ended in water being all over the bathroom
floor and me yelling, “for the love of all that is holy, can I just have five bloody minutes to myself!” After I had mopped up the bathroom and had a coffee and a chocolate biscuit, I explained to her that it wasn’t her fault. That mum had a very long day and was tired and grumpy and despite my reaction, being home with her was my favourite part of the day. Once I was snuggled next to her watching her fall asleep, I realised I had done my job with her. She did know to ask for what she wanted. I wonder when that goes away because it’s certainly not something I’m good at. In the end, there is nothing wrong with saying that I need to have a 3-hour chat with a friend after everyone has gone to bed or an uninterrupted bath, but sometimes you need to say that out loud so people don’t need to guess. I’m going to start doing that right now. Right after I go to Bunnings and buy a lock for the bathroom door.

Dental Problems and Rate Rises
READ ONLINE intouch contributor
that have struck our world simultaneously this month, I thought I would highlight one of the best ways BelleDental can reduce your dental needs (certainly in the short term) and hopefully keep your teeth. If you know that you have dental problems, the best strategy you can have is to get an examination and formulate a plan. The object of the plan is four-fold: 1. Determine exactly what needs to be done – an overall scope of the treatment you need or want.
DR ALEX HUSZTI BelleDental Alex has had a career focused on lowbiologic cost reconstructive cosmetic dental care – common sense teeth for life.
As if Covid wasn’t enough, we now have inflation and the associated interest rate hikes to contend with. I know that many of my patients are dentally stable, to a point where they can minimise or even hold off on some of their treatment until they “catch up” around these crises. Considering the multiple factors
2. Determine the relative importance of each piece of treatment – that is: create a prioritised list of each treatment (including cost). 3. Determine all treatments that can wait – put these to one side. 4. Start working through the three highest priorities in your mouth. Understand, I’m not suggesting neglecting your teeth. Instead, by prioritising your treatment needs, the most critical teeth can be stabilised first. This kind of planning is what BelleDental is known for. Most of my patients work through a treatment plan over a number of years anyway. Frequently, teeth requiring root canal therapy can be stabilised for 12 months – this takes time. Then, the money you would have spent on the root canal therapy can be used to fill the 2 or 3 most important teeth that require fillings NOW, while the root canal therapy is put on the ‘back-burner’. At BelleDental, we believe that your journey to dental stability is just that: it’s a journey. By striving to generate stability in every single patient, we save teeth. But, more importantly, they are the teeth both you and BelleDental have identified as necessary. And ultimately, keeping your own teeth is the most costeffective way to a pleasing, functional dental capacity.
3 Techniques That SAVE Your Teeth 1
Belledental CRC’s (Composite Resin Crowns) CRC’s can rebuild teeth to a similar appearance, strength and functionality of conventional crowns with the added benefits of being much more conservative of tooth structure, repairable, and ONE appointment restorations that are often HALF the fee of conventional crowns.
2
Direct Resin Veneers (Zero cutting of tooth)
3
Direct Resin Build-ups – All in ONE day! What if you have suffered with erosion... you have already lost much of your tooth structure – the last thing you need is your teeth being CUT AWAY EVEN MORE for crowns. Direct Resin Build-ups are a NO CUT, one day alternative that saves the remaining tooth structure and enhances the cosmetics and function of your teeth. They often require modifications to your bite to accomodate your new smile.
Direct Resin Veneers have a multitude of uses – they can be used to improve function, enhance the colour and shape of teeth, modify tooth position as well as in this case, restore teeth that have suffered trauma. Direct Resin Veneers can do this without cutting teeth – all in one visit.

More than just a customer at The Mutual Bank Members who join The Mutual Bank for its outstanding products and competitive interest rates stay for the exceptional member service. “The Mutual Bank’s interest rates are regularly reviewed to ensure we remain both competitive and sustainable,” said The Mutual Bank’s CEO Geoff Seccombe.
The Mutual Bank has increased its Term Deposit rates by up to 180 basis points since 24 May 2022. A depositing member investing $50,000 in a Term Deposit from 19 July 2022 for a 12-month term would attract an interest rate of 2.80% per annum compared to 1.00% per annum back on 24 May 2022. In this example, the member would potentially earn an additional $900 per annum in interest.
“This is welcome news for our depositing members who have felt the burden of the low interest rate environment over the past decade,” said Mr Seccombe. Mr Seccombe said investors can be reassured that their investments are in safe hands with The Mutual Bank. “As an authorised deposit taking institution (ADI), deposits with The Mutual Bank are protected by the Australian Government’s Financial Claims Scheme,” he said. Jenkins Legal & Advisory Redefine Their Purpose
The Newcastle CBD has built a strong reputation for being the hub of legal expertise and services, with a range of businesses operating out of the area. Among the list of businesses is Jenkins Legal Services, based on Hunter Street, who understood that to stand out from the crowd, they needed to redefine and refresh their purpose to align with the business community they serve.
READ ONLINE
Established in 2014, like many businesses, their core services have changed throughout the years in response to the needs of their clients and community. Legal Director Micah Jenkins said that after years of finessing their approach for their clients, it felt appropriate and fitting to incorporate that into the business brand. “We’ve worked hard to establish ourselves as a trusted legal team in the region as Jenkins Legal Services, but a major part of this was about providing more than just legal advice,” Micah said.
“To demonstrate our commitment to a holistic approach, it was time to hit the refresh button on our brand and to start communicating as Jenkins Legal & Advisory. In line with the updated trading name, the business now has a refreshed logo, transitioning its brand into something more dynamic. The new logo features sharper edges to demonstrate their cutting-edge approach while still incorporating the historic blue colour palette that has been with them from the start. It also incorporates a strong orange to signal the bold shift that makes them unique to the Hunter legal sector. General Manager Louise Williams said that refreshing the company's look had come at an opportune time, as businesses are finding their feet in the ‘new normal’ environment. “We established Jenkins Legal Services eight years ago and can’t believe the growth we’ve experienced since then,” Louise said. “This is an exciting moment in our history, and we hope our clients and business community love the approach we’ve worked so hard to establish since our inception.” To learn more about the Jenkins Legal & Advisory team and their range of services, visit www.jenkinslegal.com.au.

MSN Chairperson, Judy Hart, said the scholarships were mainly designed to assist disadvantaged students entering Year 11 studies next year.
“The scholarships will assist eligible students aged 15 years and over to reach their potential in terms of their individual educational and career goals,” said Judy. “Scholarships are granted to students who demonstrate the drive and determination to achieve educational goals, despite experiencing financial need. The scholarships are not necessarily awarded because of academic achievement.” MSN, which has provided nearly 400 scholarships valued at $700,000 since its scholarship program commenced in 2008, has been in touch with Hunter Region schools and other educational institutions to promote the 2023 scholarships. Judy said that although most of the scholarships will be awarded to high school students, applications are invited from people studying at other educational institutions in the Hunter Region, such as TAFE or enrolled in an apprenticeship program (including VET). including in Newcastle, and as it turns out – not much! Local Herron Todd White Property Valuer Darren Sims says that as the market improves and values increase, it is surprisingly difficult to buy a property in Newcastle city for $700,000. “As property prices rise, so does the entrylevel value of homes. Generally speaking, the city has bypassed the $700,000 purchaser,” said Darren.
Highgrove Bathrooms provides local homeowners and building industry professionals with the highest quality bathroom products. It has a huge catalogue on display in its spectacular showrooms, so you can see, touch and compare products easily before you purchase. The product range pays special attention to design and innovation, following industry influences and technology trends. Also, its huge range will adapt to the needs of any type of customer, from those looking to update or upgrade their bathroom, laundry or kitchen to those renovators ready to build a new bathroom at home. All the items in the catalogue are premium design and of superior quality but are offered at a very affordable price. If you have a bathroom renovation in mind, do not hesitate to contact Highgrove Bathrooms in Gateshead, Heatherbrae or West Gosford.
“The unit market has risen sharply, with one-bedroom units being affordable in this budget; however, only a select range of twobedroom units are now affordable. Fringe city suburbs are likewise out of reach for the house buyer, so outlying suburbs such as Maryland, Birmingham Gardens, Mount Hutton and Windale are the places to go. Further afield, Thornton, East Maitland and Cliftleigh are just within the price range, but the supply is limited,” he said. “The city and lake locations have always been a good investment, but with $700,000 to spend, this would generally mean a townhouse or a house which requires maintenance or cosmetic works. Larger traditional homes are now out of that price range, and patience and energy will be required to find the right property.” Darren says that In the current market, house prices have been rising rapidly, and the $700,000 purchaser is being priced out of the market except for areas out of the city fringes. “Looking ahead, with interest rates rising, this may start to slow price increases in the short term; however, with the lack of supply, it’s likely the entry-level price range will need to be increased above $700,000 in the medium term.”
