FROM THE

EDITORS...

Welcome to the Summer issue of InTouch Magazine – our biggest issue yet! Packed with an array of holiday reading, this edition celebrates the festive season and the joys of Summer in our region with so much to do and plan for in 2024. Looking back at 2023 – it was a year of ‘catching-up’ with so many events on offer throughout the year we always had something to look forward to (and look back on with fond memories). Just as Come From Away kicked off 2023, The Rocky Horror Show is set to launch 2024 with a bang. After triumphant seasons in 2023, and due to extraordinary demand, the 50th Anniversary world tour of The Rocky Horror Show, starring Jason Donovan, will continue its global celebrations in 2024. And in a major coup for the City of Newcastle, it will open this new season at the Civic Theatre. Read our exclusive interview with Jason on page 21. Get ready to mark up your calendars as we highlight a plethora of Christmas and New Year events happening throughout December and January. From cheerful festivities to vibrant celebrations, find out where to experience the holiday spirit and loads more with our six-page events calendar starting on page 8. There is likely no better place to kick off the holiday season than at the annual Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas Lights Spectacular. Experience the dazzling brilliance of over four million lights across eight acres at the Southern Hemisphere’s largest light display and enjoy the accompanying rides and performances while grabbing a bite along the way right up until the end of January 2024! Read more on page 18. There’s no excuse for bored children, tweens and teens this summer with so many wonderful, creative, educational and downright fun things to do and see. Why not travel further afield and check out what’s happening outside your suburb? Do a Mitch Revs workshop in Cessnock, go to gaol in Maitland or play with trash in Port Stephens! You’ll find it all in our Summer School Holidays Guide on page 65. In this issue, we also take a trip to the Hunter Valley. Not only is it Australia's premier wine region, but it's also right in our backyard – the perfect place for a day trip, a weekend or a midweek getaway. Read more from page 42. We look forward to 2024 and another year of sharing some of our favourite people, places and local businesses with you. From our families to yours, we wish you a restful Christmas and a fabulous 2024.

The Rocky Horror Show

The World’s Most Iconic Rock & Roll Musical WORDS LIANE MORRIS

READ ONLINE

Newcastle is about to give itself over to ‘absolute pleasure’ with the world’s most iconic rock and roll musical of all time, The Rocky Horror Show, due to take us all ‘on a strange journey’ as it screams into town in a flurry of sequins, corsets, fishnets and suspenders. Starring 80s pop icon Jason Donovan as Dr Frank N Furter and Australia’s favourite broadcaster and music specialist Myf Warhurst as the Narrator, we caught up with both of them to discover more about what it’s like to work on such a phenomenally popular musical. After triumphant seasons in 2023, and due to extraordinary demand, the 50th Anniversary world tour of The Rocky Horror Show will continue its global celebrations in 2024. And in a major coup for the City of Newcastle, it will open this new season right here at the Civic

Theatre on 12 January and run until 4 February before moving on to Melbourne’s Atheneum Theatre from 9 February and Theatre Royal in Sydney from 31 March. For those of us over a certain age, Jason Donovan was a household name in Australia in the 1980s. Born in Victoria in 1968, his father, Terence Donovan, was a well-known television and stage actor. Jason rocketed to fame in TV soap Neighbours, co-starring with Kylie Minogue and dating her off-screen. By the late 80s, he was a pop star with multiple chart toppers and awards, and he moved to the UK to take advantage of the opportunities there. He has continued to sing and act throughout his career and now has a much higher profile in the UK than in Australia. It was during the 1990s that he began performing in musical theatre, accepting a role as Joseph in the Andrew Lloyd Webber production of Joseph and his Amazing

Technicolour Dreamcoat for which he received an Olivier Award in 1991 and which he credits for changing his life. “Joseph changed my life, it will always have a place in my heart,” said Donovan. “Still, to this day, when I perform my music and do big 80s festivals with artists like Human League, New Order, Joy Division and Go West, I can still sing ‘Any Dream Will Do’, and the crowd goes nuts. Not so much here in Australia, but certainly in the UK.” In 2019, Donovan returned to Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, but this time, surprisingly, in the Pharoah role rather than Joseph. “I’ve got to be honest with you here. When I sang the part of Joseph through, I could have pulled it off, but the big thing is that it requires the stamina of a younger voice. Not that I don’t have that; it’s just I had a few vocal issues ▶ 21

a while back. You have to be very airy and Lloyd Webber-esque, and when I was 20, that was fine. I think now, it was the right decision to accept the Pharoah. It’s perfect, a smart move, and it worked. It doesn’t ruin history, if you know what I mean!” It was 1998 when Donovan first portrayed Dr Frank N Furter in the 25th Anniversary production of The Rocky Horror Show. It was on this production that he met his wife-to-be, and it quickly stole another piece of his heart. “Playing Frank N Furter in Rocky was always for me, the rock and roll star I never was,” said Donovan. “I was a pop star, a cultural entity or icon, I guess, especially with Neighbours and particularly in the UK. I always wanted to be the lead singer in a rock and roll band. Rocky was my opportunity to be that at a time when I was a bit messy myself and, I guess, living a bit of a rock and roll lifestyle. Now I come back to it with another 25 years’ experience, having moved on from that person but still wanting to be the lead singer of the band. I now understand the text more, and there’s more maturity and gravity in my voice. I like the show because I have never been a pure musical theatre-style singer. I can sing your classic theatre songs, but that’s not me. I’m more Frank N Furter than Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, more Sweeney Todd than I am Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Each has its place, and this is the right time for me to return to that role.

Bo

"I THINK ROCKY APPEALS TO THE GEEK INSIDE ALL OF US. IT HAS A MESSAGE OF HOPE AND DREAMS – TO STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF. " “I become a different character when I put on those high heels. It brings out the extravert in me and sits within me a lot more than many other roles. You sing it like a rock star, a bit rough around the edges. Essentially, it’s an actor’s piece with music which suits me. I think I bring the extraverted transgender aspect to it as well as the sympathetic. Frank is a pretty horrible character, but he just wants to live his dreams and gets caught up in his own madness. Sometimes he can’t see the light, but he does have a heart, and I try to bring that aspect to it, too. 22

“Essentially, it’s about a dreamer who tries to live out his fantasy and live authentically. A lot of us are misfits, and I think it appeals to those people a lot. It was born out of the 70s with its art, and the creative team have managed to capture that in a kind of Warhol-esque style with an Australian, dark, quirky English manor house vibe. It has a real design about it that complements a very simplistic music score, and it tells the truth and appeals to an audience in musical theatre that doesn’t always want Lloyd Webber. It’s more accessible. The Time Warp is timeless, with a core message that is still the

same. It’s an old show that’s aged well, and it still attracts young people in the audience.” Donovan is philosophical about ageing and hard work when it comes to stamina. “There aren’t a lot of good things about ageing, but I guess respect and experience are part of it. I feel a little calmer and more controlled in my life. I can delegate now. I am getting to a stage now where I’m enjoying the fruits of my hard work. It’s not always easy, but I believe you create your own luck in life. Timing is everything, and I love what I do. I’ve got my health, and that’s a good thing.

“When it comes to stamina, I work hard at it. I do a lot of swimming, steaming for my voice, stretching—every day. The problem as you get older is that it’s harder to be normal, let alone to aspire to some sort of utopia of mental or physical health. Physical and mental health go hand in hand, and I work on it every single day. It’s a legacy from my father and the Australian in me that believes exercise is important to longevity and balance in life.”

Part of that life balance is his pride in his children and one reason he is looking forward to returning to Australia. “I am most proud of my children. My son graduated recently and lives in Sydney, so I’m excited to see him. My daughter Jemma has been acting, and as long as she’s passionate about it and respects others, I’m supportive of that. I’ve educated my kids to make their choices in life, and hopefully, they make the

food and the wine. And I’ll be coming from the UK in winter so it’s really something to look forward to. I have genuinely heard that Newcastle is a city on the way up with lots of creative people. It’s also close to Sydney, so it’s not hard for me to get back there when I want to.” Myf Warhurst is also looking forward to reconnecting with the city of Newcastle during her stay here as she performs in The Rocky Horror Show as the Narrator. “I had an ex-partner who came from Newcastle, so I used to spend a little time there,” said Warhurst. “And our Spicks and Specks Live Show always had a huge response in Newcastle. I’ve always felt very welcomed there. It’s a gorgeous place with beautiful beaches and great vibes.”

"DON’T DREAM IT, BE IT SAYS IT ALL, REALLY. EMBRACE WHO YOU ARE – IT’S A BEAUTIFUL MESSAGE" The role of Narrator was originally played by the creator of The Rocky Horror Show, Richard O’Brien and in Australia, has been portrayed in other productions by celebrities Bert Newton, Gretel Killeen, Derryn Hinch, Kamahl and Red Symons. Warhurst may seem an unexpected choice for the role, but her list of talents is long and now includes musical theatre. Warhurst was born in Victoria in 1973 and was raised in the country, where she 24

developed a love of music, studying classical piano at university before finding her niche in radio on Triple J. She is probably best known for Spicks and Specks and, in more recent years, as one of Australia’s Eurovision commentators. She is co-host of a weekly arts and culture podcast Bang On with Zan Rowe, writes for the Guardian, is an ambassador for Animal Aid and Wildlife Victoria, recently published her autobiography Time of My Life and is the voice behind Aunt Trixie in kids’ show Bluey. She is proud to be 50 years of age, recognising that it’s a privilege denied to many and feels like she is currently living “peak Myf”, making the most of life.

“Performing in Rocky doesn’t seem like work to me,” said Warhurst. “If you do what you enjoy doing, that’s the secret to life. I’ve never done theatre before, I don’t pretend to be an expert, and I have no training in singing or dancing, but somehow Rocky is a safe place to be. It’s awesome, bonkers and fun.” Warhurst was, of course, a major Jason Donovan fan when she was growing up. “I grew up in the country in the 80s, and I knew all the words to every song Jason did. What else is there to do? I’ve gotten to know him now, and he is such fun, so generous and supportive. We have a great time, and somehow, it feels like I’ve come full circle, right back to my teen idol. Australians aren’t aware of how successful and popular he is in the UK – he’s an icon. And he’s unbelievable in this role. He was made for it.” Like Donovan, the theme of the show resonates deeply with Warhurst. “Don’t Dream It, Be It – says it all, really. Embrace who you are – it’s a beautiful message that was radical for its time but still important today. It’s a crazy comedy, drama, rock and roll musical full of dreams and nightmares, and I get to be part of the team that creates it night after night to entertain people and make them happy. It gives people a reprieve from everyday life, which, let’s face it, can be a blessing at the moment. It’s totally bonkers!” The Rocky Horror Show is selling fast and plays at the Civic Theatre from 12 January until 4 February, with a run time of 120 minutes. Recommended for ages 15+, tickets are on sale now at www.civictheatrenewcastle.com.au.

Share Your Generosity this Christmas Samaritans take their name from the story that Jesus told about the Good Samaritan - he was a man who saw another person in need and reached out to help, and now the charity’s annual Christmas Appeal is underway to raise vital funds so it can continue offering a helping hand to the local community. Samaritans support people through tough times 365 days a year, offering more than 100 programs. The Newcastle Anglican service agency helped 4,100 people through its

Emergency Relief Centres in the last financial year alone. Emergency Relief (ER) Coordinator Beth Hanna said many people were struggling with cost-of-living pressures, including high rent, significant increases in electricity and gas bills, and a rise in fuel and mortgage rates. “Based on conversations we have with participants through ER, Christmas will place additional pressures on household budgets that are already feeling the strain,” she said.

“Many of the people we see have indicated they are worried about how they will provide gifts for their children and meet the extra demands of Christmas. “There is also an emerging trend of people who are employed seeking support through ER as they find it increasingly difficult to make ends meet.” Many of Samaritans' vital programs can only continue through the support of generous donations. The charity sees an increase in families reaching out for help across the festive season and into January and February. Samaritans President Bishop Peter Stuart said the charity had been sharing Christmas generosity, kindness, and goodwill with as many families as possible for over 20 years. “Every year, Samaritans supports thousands of people in our community who do not have sufficient resources for food, utilities, and basic living needs,” he said. “People’s emotional and financial struggles intensify during the festive season, and often, it is more difficult to get support. Samaritans is committed to making a positive difference. This year, as you prepare to celebrate Christmas with your loved ones, we are inviting you to extend the spirit of Christmas by supporting others.” Share your generosity. multicultural Beaumont St – making it truly like travelling. With your tastebuds!

The Tastebud Tourist WORDS DI VON ESSEN Every time I drive down Beaumont Street, I seem to discover a restaurant I've never noticed before. Recently, this prompted me to make a (somewhat hasty) declaration that “we will try out a different restaurant on Beaumont Street

every week and see how many weeks it takes us to try them all!” Admittedly, what started as a challenge has turned into a bit of an obsession because, as I've realised, it’s kind of like travelling which is an obsession. And, of course, there is an incredible array of different cuisines in

BUONGIORNO ITALIA at SAPORI AT TAILORS! For a genuine taste of Italy, particularly Rome and Calabria, Novocastrians need to go no further than Sapori at Tailors. Opened by Romans Fabrizio and Francesca Virgili in January 2021, it is now a firm favourite for locals and anyone looking for the authentic traditions of Italian fare. And when I say authentic, I genuinely mean it – nearly everyone working there speaks Italian or is from Italy, including our lovely waitress, who hails from a small town just outside Venice. Sapori means ‘flavours’ in Italian, and that’s what this rustic restaurant is all about - flavours and traditional cooking that is true to the origins of the recipes handed down through the family. “We really care about keeping to traditions. We make everything from scratch with the best produce. We import a lot of ingredients from Italy because if we want authentic flavours, we have to. The Italian speck is much less fatty than the Australian speck; the salami is spicier or more flavourful. It is all about the flavours,” says Fabrizio, our Chef for the night.

And there were flavours aplenty in every morsel – from the Arancini Funghi to the traditional beef and pork Lasagna topped with fresh parmesan and basil, (the best I’ve ever tasted), to my personal favourite – the Gnocchetti with Prawns and Zucchini. There was no room for dessert, but we made space regardless for a slice of Pear and Ricotta Cake from the extensively and deliciously stocked dessert cabinet. Dining at Sapori’s was unexpectedly remarkable, and we will definitely become repeat visitors. You’ll find this delightful gem at the Islington end of Beaumont St (Number 10, to be exact). Bookings are recommended as this restaurant has quite the following.

We both went for lamb dishes – the Khoresht Bademjan (slow-cooked diced lamb stew with roasted eggplant and tomato flavoured with sun-dried lime and cinnamon served with saffron rice) and the Mahiche (slow-cooked lamb shanks cooked in sauce with Persian spices, saffron and tomato served with saffron rice). The spice was subtle and balanced in both dishes (which we shared), and I found it impossible to choose between them. If you love a good Baklava, then Limoo is your place. There were four on the menu the evening we dined, and if I could make any recommendation, I would try all four! Pistachio, Walnut, Almond or Hazelnut and Chocolate Baklava – how could any sane person choose? You’ll find Limoo at 74 Beaumont St, Hamilton.

LIMOO PERSIAN CUISINE I'm the first to admit that I know very little about Persian (aka Iranian) cuisine. It doesn’t seem to have the same dedicated following that Italian or Indian cuisine has in this country, yet, as we discovered at Limoo, there is so much time that goes into Iranian dishes (many of which are slow-cooked for four or five hours), the resulting flavour is outstanding and something to be savoured.

KINGS XI I love Indian food, but I tend to have a set routine that includes butter chicken and lamb korma – and occasionally, I go wild and order a Mango Chicken. The menu at Kings XI certainly had all of my faves on offer – but in the spirit of a true ‘tastebud tourist”, I decided to try something new. Named after the city where it originated, the Kings XI Amritsari Fish Curry infused with a

mild blend of onion, coriander, and fenugreek was the old-style curry it promised to be, but the hero of the night was the Hyderabadi Biryani. Renowned as India’s most famous dish, it was described on the menu as a concoction of basmati rice, mint, saffron and rose water, layered with steamed chicken and slow-cooked over a very low flame, then served with raita and a boiled egg. Needless to say – I have a new favourite Indian dish! You’ll find Kings XI at 100 Beaumont St, and be warned – it’s too soon for cricket banter!

The New Era of Home Brew WORDS STU FARRELLY, OWNER OF NOBLE BARONS HOME BREW SUPPLY STORES Things have changed since the days your dad brewed beer out in the back shed. A new wave of homebrew means you can brew beer at home that tastes as good (if not better) than beer from the bottle shop. Equipment has advanced significantly, too. Now you can pour beer on tap at home just like at the pub, turning your place into the neighbourhood local. Beer tastes have come a long way from simple lagers, ales and stouts. With the explosion of craft breweries, the different styles of beers seem endless. The good news is that

homebrew has joined the party. From old favourites like Tooheys New to an easy-drinking pale ale, hoppy hazy, or experimental sour, the range of ingredients these days makes it easy for anyone to replicate the craft brewery experience at home. Once you enter the homebrew world, there’ll be no looking back. The Hunter Region has a fantastic network of brewers keen to share their tips and experience. Across the three Noble Barons stores, we bring together the brewing community with regular events, like our ‘Barons Brew Club' meet-ups and ‘Learn to Brew’ workshops. With the cost of living skyrocketing, savings from brewing beer at home are a major benefit. So, how much can homebrewing really save you? Take Australia’s most popular craft beer, Stone and Wood’s Pacific Ale, which sets you back about $79 a case, or $3.30 per stubby. A Byron Beast Extract Can Recipe Kit makes a similar style beer and costs $38.85 to make 19L of beer. That’s equivalent to two cases, or 69 cents per stubby. You’ll need the right equipment to get you going. A Basic Starter Kit includes everything you need to put down your first brew and costs

$89. Add that to the cost of your recipe kit, and the total is $2.28 per beer. You’ve already recouped your set-up costs after your first brew. Sure, going to the bottle shop is quicker and easier than making homebrew. But exactly how much time are we talking? Using an Extract Can Recipe Kit, the process is fast – just an hour is all you need to get your beer in the fermenter. The fermentation time is then around two weeks. If you are bottling your beer, which is where most home brewers start, allow about an hour to sanitise, set up, bottle and cap your brew. If you are kegging, the process is even quicker, taking less than 20 minutes. The next step is probably the hardest… patience! Whilst your bottled beer can be enjoyed after one month, it will taste much better if you leave it to carbonate and age for two to three months. If patience isn’t your virtue, opt for kegging, and you can be sampling your brew just 24 hours after transferring to the keg. It’s quick and straightforward to have beer on tap at home with a kegerator system. Sounds easy, right? Well, say hello to your new summer hobby. Come in for a chat with the expert team at Noble Barons, and we’ll be happy to help get you started.

New York. It’s a destination that’s on many a bucket list. And for good reason, because as the old adage goes – it’s a great place to visit, but who could afford to live there (yes, I know that’s not really the saying!) According to the ever-trusty Wikipedia, as of 2023, New York City is the most expensive city in the world for expatriates to live and is home to the highest number of billionaires, individuals of ultra-high net worth (greater than US$30 million), and millionaires of any city in the world. So, Tip #1 – Wait until the exchange rate is decent, and whatever you think you might

need to get the complete New York experience – double it. And be prepared to walk your feet into the ground or travel via the subway because Ubers are expensive. That said – New York truly is an amazing city. It’s also a huge city, and we quickly learned that four full days would not be enough to see everything on my list (what a shame… I’ll have to go back!). It’s so big that it’s had to be divided into five distinct ‘Burroughs,’ Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and The Bronx. So, before you book, decide what you want to

9/11 Memorial and Museum The 9/11 Memorial honours the 2,977 people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, as well as the six people killed in the World Trade Centre bombing on February 26, 1993. It’s located at the site of the former World Trade Center complex, with twin reflecting pools that feature the largest man-made waterfalls in North America. Around the outside of the walls, each person’s name has been inscribed – a task that was years in the making to ensure no one was forgotten and names were spelled correctly. It isn’t easy to put into words the feelings that the memorial invoked, given that this one day in history changed the course of the world forever. There’s a definite feeling of sombreness and sorrow, not just for the victims and their families but for the world, and this is reflected in the solemn mood surrounding the pools, where the large number of tourists are fittingly respectful and reflective. The Art Deco masterpiece was constructed in just over a year and opened to the public in 1931. It has been featured in more than 250 television series and films since the original King Kong was released in 1933, but its real appeal is that it delivers unparalleled views of the city and beyond. It was also nice to go outside and walk around the building for a 360-degree view (level 86) without being stuck behind glass. The High Line The High Line is a public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above Manhattan’s West Side streets. It’s a hybrid public space where visitors experience nature, art, and design, and I imagine that if you live in the city, a stroll along the Highline will give you some respite from city streets and the peace nature delivers. But if I’m honest, I found it a little disappointing, as many of the garden areas were unkept and looking a little dead. On the plus side, we exited the Highline at ‘The Vessel’, a unique (if not bizarre) piece of architecture and discovered Mercado Little Spain. Described as a veritable love letter to Spain, it is the brainchild of Michelin star-winning restauranteur and Chef José Andrés. The Mercado (or Market) area was made up of food stalls, bars and grocery stores, and we were able to pick up a delicious and authentic Spanish Paella and a beer for an energyrestoring break.

Times Square and Broadway If you’re after a sensory overload, then Times Square delivers. Make sure you see it at night and don’t fall prey to the multitude of costume-wearing sharks offering to be in a photo with you – they are very pushy and will charge you. The square is the intersection of three main streets and is one of the world’s busiest pedestrian areas. Formerly known as Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed in 1904 after The New York Times moved its headquarters to the then newly erected Times Building, now One Times Square. It is the site of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop – and is a must-see. While you’re there, make sure you catch a Broadway show - there are dozens to choose from. We selected Aladdin at the New Amsterdam Theatre not only for what we knew would be a brilliant production (the incredible special effects that saw the magic carpet flying above the stage with Aladdin and Princess

Jasmine onboard are still a mystery to me) but also for the theatre itself as it’s the oldest theatre on Broadway. Well worth a look – tickets can be purchased on the day from numerous sites, including www.todaytix.com or from ticket booths in Times Square. Statue of Liberty Our TopView tickets included an up-close cruise to see the Statue of Liberty (if we’d had more time, it would have been great to disembark, take a tour or visit the crown). Dedicated in 1886, Lady Liberty was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States and is recognised as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The cruise enabled us to see the statue up close and Manhattan from the water. The tour guide on board was full of interesting facts which made this well worth doing – and of course gave me a phone full of fabulous photos.

send a sample. Or, if you just wish to come in and have a tasting, we can do that too! These products make the perfect gifts. THE WINES Our wines are made by Daniel Binet, whose “creative expressions” are utilised in the making of our whites, reds, and bubbles. A winemaker for some 20-plus years, Dan has a "natural palate for wine, which allows him to create wines with personality, structure, and finesse." Our cellar door is enriched by the flavours Dan brings to us in our wines, in both the aged and the more recent vintages. All our grapes are grown on our Lovedale property, these include the Hunter Valley signature wine-grapes of Chardonnay and Shiraz, however, the original owners, and the new, planted Pinot Grigio, Tempranillo, Cabernet and Sangiovese. Most of our wines are between two and eight years old. Like us, they get better with age! Visit our cellar door for a tasting, or find out about our Wine Club online at www.adinavineyard.com.au.

Adina Vineyard & Olive Grove Olives, Wines and Accommodation Adina Vineyard & Olive Grove, located in Lovedale Hunter Valley, is a purveyor of some of life’s delicious pleasures: fine wines, olive products, other food accoutrements, and a restful place to stay and relax. Not only do we have some delicious treats available in our cellar door but we are also a wholesaler, supplying our olive products, accoutrements, and oils to restaurants and other retailers beyond the Hunter Valley to Sydney and the Central Coast. THE OLIVES Onsite is our olive mill, and employed here is our ‘Olive Guru’ Dirk. Trained as a chef, he is continually looking for new ways to wow your palate. Recently, after some deep thinking, he happened upon the flavoursome marinade of Dried Yellow Lime & Coriander Seeds using the fabulous Wallis Olives. Dirk also tweaked the flavour combinations created by Sue, our previous Olive Guru, of Orange & Thyme and Ligurian Olives. 44

When satisfied, he brought these up to the office for a taste-test, and yes, these flavours did wow our palates. So, it was decided to enter them into the Hunter Olive Awards and the Australian International Olive Awards. While his marinated olives received awards at the Hunter show, the latter show, held in Canberra, produced spectacular results: Gold Reserve Champion Specialty Olives – Ligurian; Gold Champion Speciality Olives – Orange & Thyme; Gold Champion – ‘Wild’ Olives; and Silver also in the Speciality Olives Class – Lime & Coriander 1st, 2nd, 3rd. In addition to those, the Orange & Thyme Olives were awarded the Best Table Olive of Show (Boutique Volume). YUM! When commenting, the judges wrote the words: “visually pleasing”, “an interesting and harmonious blend”, “excellent blend of citrus, herb, and olive, creating a beautiful balance of flavours”, and “…great texture, generous and firm flesh.” If you are interested in purchasing these products wholesale, please call us, and we can

A first for the Hunter Valley, Tower Whiskey Distillery offers hosted tasting experiences of their initial release Single Cask, Single Malt Whiskeys – a range of whiskeys distilled, aged and bottled on-site at the distillery. Guests can enjoy the Whiskey Flight or the Discovery Experience including learning about the process of whiskey distillation and ageing.

"Our journey into whiskey started as I was keen to get into spirits and distilling. After researching, I realised that whiskey perfectly ties together all aspects of the business (beer, wine, spirits and beef) and the Hope venture of farm to table,” said owner Michael Hope. “To make whiskey wash (the base of whiskey) we use the brewery, then the spent grain is used to feed our Angus cattle that we are breeding here on site which gives us our beef component. Then to age our whiskey, it needs to be aged in barrels, and traditionally you use a lot of wine barrels which is something we have plenty of, so I have used a combination of barrels to age the whiskey. “So, to me the whiskey is the ultimate experience that ties the whole business together." Exceptional Signature Dishes Spanning Two Cuisines READ ONLINE WORDS LIANE MORRIS Oishii Japanese Thai Restaurant, located in the Roche Estate complex on Broke Road in Pokolbin, is the only Asian restaurant in a winery in the Hunter Valley and, quite possibly, Australia. One of the only restaurants in the area open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, it

is popular with locals and visitors and has been a favourite of Hunter Valley diners since 2002. The story begins when Bo Lorchaiwet migrated to Australia from Thailand in 1992 and opened a restaurant on Darby Street in Newcastle in 1994. One year later, a 14-yearold Patrick Boonsong arrived to help his mum run her restaurant. The family ran restaurants in several locations, including Newcastle, Hamilton, Nelson Bay, Terrigal, and Swansea. Patrick’s uncle was a big fan of Japanese cuisine and encouraged the family to open Japanese and Thai restaurants. “Most of the chefs at Japanese restaurants tend to be Thai,” said Patrick. “In Thailand, there is a great diversity of cuisine, and our chefs learn a broad range of

Our restaurant located at the Tempus Two winery, in the heart of the Hunter Valley, it has become a favourite for locals and visitors alike. styles as a result. We think that Thai chefs make better Japanese food! Not so bland.” It was Lisa McGuigan who had the great idea to offer cellar door visitors something a little different in the Hunter Valley. A regular customer at the Newcastle restaurant run by Patrick and his mum, she invited the family to open Oishii in what was then the Tempus Two Winery. The space overlooks the architecturally designed amphitheatre and vines at Roche Estate. It’s conveniently located, relaxed and offers an affordable dining alternative with dishes designed to please every palate. The menu has changed very little since the restaurant opened, with current chef Jantee Dangsopa having been at the kitchen's helm since 2008. Oishii is well known for its signature dishes, including Teppan Yaki Beef, Panang Duck Curry, Gyoza, Massaman Beef Curry and the freshly made vegetarian Spring Rolls, which are nothing like the mass-produced ones usually served at most Asian restaurants. Oishii offers a unique alternative for dining in the Hunter Valley and is an absolute must-do dining experience. 2023 AWARD WINNERS Celebrating the Hunter’s Young Business Minds READ ONLINE WORDS LIANE MORRIS IMAGES ANDREW MONGER – AJM PHOTOGRAPHY The Hunter Young Business Mind Awards (HYBMA) has awarded this year’s young entrepreneurs and innovative teachers. Now in its sixth year, the awards recognise young people under 25 with an innovative business concept, product, service or solution and educators for innovation in the classroom. Supported by local companies such as Hunter Water and Ampcontrol that are seeking next-generation skills to future-proof their business, the awards provide an avenue for our

region’s youth to showcase their ideas. “It was amazing getting to speak with industry experts at the awards night,” said 14-year-old Joshua Pidgeon, the Design and Technology award winner. “I’m hoping to apply again next year.” Across several categories, entrants tried to solve real-world problems, with runners-up winning $500 and winners $1000. The issues tackled by the students were wide-ranging and included accessible self-checkouts; portable washing and spinning device for backpackers; a school uniform recycling program; an app that records where you’ve parked your car; sustainable shelters for school bus stops; milk

cartons made from sustainable milk casein and recycled cardboard; a product that promotes nutrient density in the soil and many more innovative ideas. “I learnt a lot through this project,” said Joshua Pidgeon, who developed the sustainable bus shelters. “I learnt about the design process, premodelling and sustainable construction materials.” Lotus Antoni, winner of the Business Enterprise award for her Dairy Way submission has big plans for the future. “I want to take my sustainable milk carton concept to UNSW to research the correct formula and then take it to the government.” And perhaps, most moving of all, young 14-year-old Taya Porter, who was in a wheelchair, shared her frustrations at inaccessible self-checkouts. “Our team’s design for accessible selfcheckouts will provide greater independence for people like me,” said Taya. “It creates a better quality of life for those in a wheelchair.” The awards will run again in 2024 so teachers can reliably plan to include the process in their lessons. SERVING CHILDREN, FAMILIES & COMMUNITIES

Fostering does not have to be full-time. Respite Carers look after children and young people on weekends or for short periods while their regular foster carer has a break. It can be difficult for a child to go to different people so we try to arrange for the child always to go to the same Respite Carer so they can get to know each other. At Key Assets Australia, we provide our foster carers with ongoing training, 24/7 support, a dedicated social worker, and an allowance. We hold regular events and connect foster carers with each other for extra support. Anyone can apply to become a foster carer. We celebrate diversity and welcome enquiries from people who are single or in a relationship, homeowners or renting. Your culture, religion or sexual orientation doesn’t affect your eligibility for foster care. We believe the diversity of our carers is vital when finding the best possible family for a foster child. If you feel you have the love, space, and energy to provide a safe and happy home, then we would love to talk to you about the options of respite care, short-term, or long-term care.

Your help is needed for Samaritans 2023 Christmas Appeal. Christmas is a time to show generosity. Samaritans takes its name from the story that Jesus told about the Good Samaritan. He was a man who saw another person in need and reached out to help. Samaritans helps people through tough times 365 days a year, offering more than 100 programs. Newcastle Anglican’s service agency helped 4,100 people through its Emergency Relief Centres, in the last financial year alone. Many of Samaritans vital programs can only continue through the help of generous donations. The charity’s annual Christmas Appeal is underway to help raise vital funds.

Samaritans sees an increase in families reaching out for help across the festive season and into January and February. Families who are struggling with Christmas expenses, increased food costs with children at home during school holidays and then the costs associated with them returning to school. The people Samaritans support report that their financial hardship can be attributed to increased cost of living pressures including high cost of rent, large increases in utility bills, fuel, and interest rate rises. Many are living week to week.

You can help. Share your generosity this Christmas.

If you miss the chance to see Santa in Wheeler Place, there is a free DIY photo opportunity at 161a Hunter Street, seven days a week, from 11 December to Christmas Eve. Bring your family, friends and pets for this free DIY photo." "City of Newcastle provides a range of activities in the lead-up to Christmas that offer families the ideal opportunity to come to the city centre, shop locally for their presents and support our hospitality and retail outlets,” Cr Nelmes said. Adding extra incentive to visit the inner city, the Newcastle Business Improvement

Indago Environmental director Naiomi Finlayson with Daisy the cocker spaniel at a site at Eleebana

Association created a Festive Shopping Extravaganza, giving Novocastrians a chance to share in $7,500 worth of vouchers to local boutiques, cafes, bars, restaurants, pubs, entertainment venues or hair and beauty businesses. CN's cultural venues will be home to holiday season productions, including Messiah in the City on 10 December at City Hall, The Nutcracker on 19 December at the Civic Theatre and One Song Sing | How to Make Gravy in Wheeler Place on 21 December, where more than 1,200 people are expected to meet, rehearse and sing Paul Kelly's iconic song in just one hour. Timberlina will present Christmas Rainbow Storytime at Newcastle Library on 9 December, and Saint Nick will also stop at Newcastle Museum on 6 December at 11am as part of Christmas Story Explorers. Wallsend will be busier than Santa's workshop, with the iconic rotunda on the corner of Nelson, Tyrrell and Harris Streets hosting the Rock’n Elfy’s Christmas Show from 11am on 9, 16 and 23 December featuring singing, dancing and prizes galore. The rotunda will also host Christmas carols every night from 6pm between 20 and 23 December, as well as the Conscious Christmas Markets on 9 December. Mr and Mrs Claus will spend plenty of time in the Hamilton business precinct on 15 December, inviting locals and business owners to take a free picture with the hard-working, happy couple. SNIFFER DOGS SHRINKING VIOLETS IN AUSTRALIA-FIRST INITIATIVE Sniffer dogs are being used for the first time in Australia to track down an invasive weed known as Chinese violet in an innovative initiative underway in Lake Macquarie. The two canines – Daisy, the cocker spaniel and Henry, the border collie – have undergone intensive training to detect the species in bushland areas throughout the city. Natural Assets Coordinator Dominic Edmonds said Chinese violet infestations occurred across the Hunter, North Coast and Greater Sydney regions, but most were concentrated around Port Stephens, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. While large infestations are easy to spot, new outbreaks can sometimes be hidden amongst the scrub and underbrush,

52

and that’s where Daisy and Henry come into the picture. “It’s a case of literally nipping the problem in the bud. The dogs have an incredible sense of smell and can detect a single specimen of this weed in a huge area, and they can do it with minimal disturbance to the surrounding environment,” said Mr Edmonds. Once detected, Council crews can eradicate the weed and monitor the area to ensure there are no further outbreaks. The project is jointly funded by Council and the NSW Government’s Local Land Services.

“The Visitor Information Centre is positioned at the gateway to Central Maitland and has been very under-utilised. There are a range of opportunities highlighted in our Destination Management Plan, and we are keen to hear from visitors and community members so that we take the best possible step forward.” The community can take part in the survey and read the Visitor Information Services Review Report at www.yoursay.maitland.nsw. gov.au. The survey will be open until 5pm on Wednesday, 31 January 2024, and the results will be shared soon after.

HAVE YOUR SAY… Maitland City Council is asking residents, visitors and business owners to have their say on the future of the city’s visitor information services via an online survey. Earlier in 2023, Councillors endorsed a recommendation to discontinue a standalone Visitor Information Centre and further investigate four possible options for visitor services in the future. Caroline Booth, Manager City Experiences and Economy, says, “The survey is a key part of Council’s ongoing commitment to involve the community in the transformation of the city’s visitor economy.

Commitment to Local Community Urth Fitness, formerly known as Planet Fitness, emerged as a family venture in 1994 with a single Lambton location. Remaining a family-run business, it stands as Newcastle's most affordable gym. Witnessing remarkable growth since its humble beginnings, Urth has expanded to three locations and garnered a community of more than 10,000 wonderful members across Newcastle. Some of these members have been part of this journey since

the beginning, witnessing the establishment of Spa Rooms, the expansion of Group Fitness to 75 weekly classes, and, of course, the huge rebrand last year. Urth’s most notable commitment to the Newcastle community is that even though 29 years have passed (and the cost of living continues to creep higher and higher!), they have not and will not budge on price. They will always have a membership that starts from $5 a week because everyone should have access to improving their health and wellness. They believe that affordable access to health and wellness should be a universal right, not a luxury.

Summed up in three words—welcoming, community-oriented, and affordable—Urth Fitness's philosophy centres on creating an environment where everyone feels at home and embraced from the moment they enter. Embodying a judgment-free policy, their community not only welcomes but actively ensures that everyone feels comfortable and included. And, of course, affordability is their ongoing promise and something that will never change. The Urth team understands that walking into a gym can feel daunting. Patient Experience of Ideal Dental Care intouch contributor DR ALEX HUSZTI BelleDental Alex has had a career focused on lowbiologic cost reconstructive cosmetic dental care – common sense teeth for life.

I occasionally sit back and think about what patients would consider to be “the ideal experience” for their dental care. Yeah, sure, ideally, this would be a ZERO requirement for treatment. However, this is not realistic for many people with either existing dental problems or a history of dental treatment that warrants maintenance. If we shortlist desirable dental care elements, what do we think that would look like?

1. Excellent Management of Fundamentals – Fundamentals in dentistry are the most basic elements of dental health – management of gum disease and sound teeth/fillings: the cornerstones of all dental health. 2. Patient Results based on Understanding – Closely related to the above is patient understanding of the difference between health and disease and HOW to tip the balance in favour of HEALTH. Patient education/understanding is critical for longterm, successful health outcomes. Best of all, education is preventative and basically FREE to our patients. 3. Minimally Invasive – Nobody wants any more cutting of teeth than absolutely

necessary. BelleDental has always focused on the absolute minimal number and degree of interventions necessary to produce optimal dental health outcomes. 4. Holistic Care – Points 1, 2 and 3 above – combined – are the definition of holistic care. The more education-based, minimalistic, focused care you receive – the more holistic your care. 5. Repairable and Upgradable – Dental care that is both repairable and upgradeable is the key to longer dental treatment lifecycles. Long lifecycles = fewer interventions and LESS COST. We have all had consumer products that are unrepairable – when they fail, you throw them out and get a NEW ONE. Try doing that with your teeth! 6. Become the MOST boring Patient – At BelleDental, we celebrate what we call our “most boring patients”. This is not an insult: this is an accolade bestowed on our patients that celebrates the experience of decades of largely trouble-free dentistry – patients who are on their way to keeping their teeth for life! If you desire dental care that embodies this shortlist – I urge you to try the BelleDental difference.

On Tour With the Kid CHLOE O'SULLIVAN

So, This is Christmas

TEACHING A CHILD NOT TO STEP ON A CATERPILLAR IS JUST AS IMPORTANT TO THE CHILD AS IT IS TO THE CATERPILLAR. Years ago, we went to the happiest place on earth, Bunnings, and made our own advent calendar. It's a tiny little house with the idea that it's all very nice to get a treat on the countdown to Christmas, but it's also a chance to remind each other that what you give is more important than what you get. Every morning, along with the chocolate, the kid gets a little note about what we can do that day for someone else and, in a small way, make our tiny corner of the world a better place. Our list is not for everyone. Some things are very specific to our family. The news has been hard to watch lately, and it feels like there is no way to keep it from any kid with access to a device. I felt like this was the way to talk about what is within our control and what

Newcastle’s own clinical trial centre Every new medication/treatment has to pass through a series of clinical trials, a process which can take several years, before it can be approved for wider use. By volunteering for a trial, you have the opportunity to access cutting edge treatment not otherwise available, while also helping to improve future treatment options. Our ethically approved clinical trials are run by a dedicated team of doctors and nurses. We provide comprehensive medical care throughout the trial at no cost to you. It is only through the willingness of clinical trial volunteers that we can advance medicine and continue changing lives.

we can do to make our tiny corner of the world a little nicer. December 1 It's bloody expensive being a woman. I can't even imagine how awful it would feel not to be able to get everything we need to wash our hair and take care of our period. No one should have to decide between tampons and food or not being able to afford either. That just shouldn't be a thing. Share the Dignity takes donations for In the Bag, which collects handbags filled with goodies to give to women who need them. We do this every year, but this year, I thought we could do a few extra to try and make a few more people smile. We did this early this year as the cut-off was 26 November, and bags filled with the items can be dropped off at Bunnings. You can donate money to these guys all year round to help with the same issue at www.sharethedignity.org.au. ▶

and a few other nice things for women who need them. We are going to help out and make 5. Let's go shopping! (Please note: this is what they needed when we wrote this, but needs are constantly changing – so check before you shop.). Go to www.remoteopshopproject.org December 13 We have the best neighbours in the world. Both at our place and MaMa's, and the presents you make are always more meaningful than the presents you buy. Today, we will use MaMa's shortbread recipe and GG's Anzac Biscuit recipe and deliver them to the people we share space with and wish them Merry Christmas. December 15 Celebrate with your friends today! You have reached a huge milestone in your school life and today. I’m so proud of you, and self-care is part of caring for the world. You look after yourself today, baby. Feel all the emotions and all the excitement of a new adventure. December 5 Today, kiddo, we are making some happy boxes! The remote op-shop project works with shops in all different remote indigenous areas. Their

Facebook page always makes suggestions about what the communities need at the time. Clothes are always welcome, but at the moment, they are trying to get to 100 boxes filled with toiletries, pads, soap, hair products

Just the idea of getting to do all of that with the kid makes it feel more like Christmas. I hope you are surrounded by love and good vibes this holiday season.

Kid’s Unbridled Imagination Inspires Local Author WORDS LIANE MORRIS Newcastle has more than our fair share of musicians, actors, artists and authors and over recent years, there’s been a push by the City of Newcastle to establish the region as a creative industries hub. This thriving creative community is one of the reasons that Jess Black, successful award-winning children’s author, manuscript editor and creative writing teacher, has vowed never to move away from the city she calls home. “Visitors are always surprised at what they find here,” said Jess. “It’s such a creative place. There’s so much energy and exciting things happening. It’s wonderfully supportive for creative output, and I don’t plan to live elsewhere!” Creative output is something that Jess seems to do rather well, having authored 47 books and counting. She’s recently released the first two picture books, Aussie Bird Babies and Aussie Farm Babies, in a series of six, called Black and White for Babies, high contrast board books ideal for attracting the attention of babes in arms and initiating a lifelong love of reading. She has a new picture book coming out next 62

June, a series coming out in July and another project that it’s too early to talk about also on the horizon. It's not just her own creative output that she’s engaged in, though. She’s also a passionate, creative writing teacher, guiding the future generations of our region’s writers through Story Hunter, an initiative of the Newcastle Writer’s Festival, and The Creative Word Shop. Both organisations offer school and holiday creative writing workshops. In addition, she further facilitates the learning of writing by providing professional development courses for teachers through Black & Wright. Black and Wright was founded by Ed Wright (of the Creative Word Shop) and Jess, who discovered that teachers were looking for a practical and concrete way to teach narrative to their students. “I love teaching, kids especially,” said Jess. “Their unbridled imaginations bring me such joy. It’s a pleasure to help them facilitate the magic of turning their ideas into stories. And by offering professional development to the teachers, we can feel secure in knowing that participating schools are harnessing that magic. It works particularly well when we package

the two together, the teacher’s professional development and the creative workshop for the kids.” Jess also tours schools, giving author talks, and offers manuscript assessments for aspiring authors. Add into this mix two teen daughters, her husband, a rescue dog and a tyrannical cat, and you could be forgiven for thinking that her life is pretty much complete, but she recently added piano lessons into the mix because “anything creative just brings me such joy.” Born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1972, Jess spent her childhood moving home a lot, spending blocks of time in Melbourne, Hobart, Brisbane, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Wellington and Sydney. “My dad was in insurance management and just moved jobs a lot. I was always devastated moving from one place to another. I thought it was the worst thing to happen, and then after a while, I’d settle in and be happy, and then it would happen again. Looking back, I’m grateful because it taught me so much, but I’ve grown up with an aversion to moving, so Newcastle is stuck with me.” As a child, Jess’s love of animals had her aspiring to be a vet, but her maths and science

marks were not good enough. Her pathway to writing came through her love of theatre. Graduating with Honours in 1997 from the University of Cape Town with a degree in Theatre, Film, Directing and Producing, she worked as a drama tutor, actress, director and producer before trying her hand at writing a play. The play was called Cruelty and won the 1997 Standard Bank National Arts Festival. It was a turning point in her life. “I just fell in love with the process of writing. After my Honours year, I moved into television, working as a producer for Southern Star Entertainment and Sony Music before getting into script writing for Head Start through Gannon Television/Foxtel/ABC and then Sleepover Club for the Nine Network. After that, I became an editor with Scholastic Australia, which is where I met my husband.” Jess’s big break as an author of children’s books came when Random House went into a partnership with the Irwin family and went looking for someone to write a series of books based on Bindi Irwin. An old friend from Jess’s university and television days was the editor, and together, they collaborated on an initial four-book deal. “It was around 2009, and I was pregnant with my first daughter. I went on to work on the Bindi books for three years, and there were nine books in total. We also moved to Newcastle around this time. I enjoy the challenge of taking the essence of who someone is, imagining them as a young person and then creating stories around that.” The success of the Bindi books led to more work as an ‘author for hire’ with Jess going on to write several series, including Little Paws and The Tales of Mr Walker for the Guide Dogs,

Animal Tales for the RSPCA, and Kitty is not a Cat for Hachette Australia based on the TV series of the same name. She has also written The Colourful World of Poppy Star Olsen with Olympic Australian skateboarder Poppy Olsen, one of the Whodunnit Eddie Woo books, Time Out! with celebrity mathematician Eddie Woo and was co-author on the Kaboom Kid series based on David Warner, the cricketer. Most of these books fit within the junior fiction genre, however, Jess has also been an author for hire on picture book Logan’s Big Move, inspired by Australia’s BMX freestyle Olympic gold medalist and 2021 Sports Dad of the Year, Logan Martin. “This kind of work is not for everyone,” said Jess. “I do get nervous about creating a fictional story based on a real person. It’s very different from writing your own fiction because you are usually on tight deadlines. It’s amazing how much work you can get done when you have concrete deadlines.” When Jess is not working as an author for hire, she creates her own work and is the author of the highly successful Keeper of the Crystals adventure fantasy series, the Pepper Creek Ponies series, inspired by her love of horses from when she was a child and two picture books - The Bold Australian Girl and Moon Dance. “When I write for myself, there’s so much freedom; anything is possible. It’s also a little nerve-wracking because there’s no guarantee that it will be published or that people will buy it. I also like writing in series because it gives me time to figure out the story, to let everything fall into place.” Her most awarded books have been from The Tales of Mr Walker series, with The Tales of Mr Walker longlisted by the Australian Book

Industry Awards in 2019 as Book of the Year for Younger Children and recognised in the CBCA Book of the Year Awards as a Notable Book for Younger Readers in the same year. The series hit gold again with Mr Walker and the Dessert Delight recognised as a Notable Book in the CBCA Book of the Year Awards for Younger Readers in 2020. Jess is inspired by everyday life, the people she’s close to and the things she loves doing. “I get inspiration from my family, little moments and snippets of life. I find that when I walk along the beach or through the bush, taking my dog for a walk, that lack of distraction, the space in my mind, allows the ideas to flow.” Jess’s next creative writing workshop for kids aged 7 to 14 will be held on January 17 in the school holidays at The Creative Word Shop www.creativewordshop.com.au/kids_ workshops/cat-magic-7-14/ and her books can be purchased at all good bookstores or online at www.jessblack.com.au/shop 63

Hunter Region Botanic Gardens The Hunter Region Botanic Gardens has been at Heatherbrae since 1985 and covers 125 hectares of land, and is the only botanic gardens in the region. Thirty hectares are under developed gardens, with the rest set aside for conservation, where an abundance of birds and other wildlife abound. The Gardens are predominantly focused on native plants from the Hunter Region but also host a range of over 25 specialty gardens, from bromeliads and orchids to camellias and ferns. The succulent garden is one of the largest collections in a public garden in the southern hemisphere. 70

Like most botanic gardens, there is also a scientific focus and there is a comprehensive herbarium housing collections of the local flora, as well as an extensive library collection. The Gardens are heavily involved with the conservation of local rare and endangered plant species and work closely with NPWS and the Save Our Species program. Through these associations the Gardens is able to propagate rare and endangered plant species as an insurance population or for translocation back to the wild. There are many events held every month at the Gardens so there is always something new to see and do. Enjoy a guided walk with one of the experienced guides or, for those less-mobile, take a ride on the 7-seater ‘people mover’. School holiday programs are popular

and include lots of different activities. School visits are also welcome and they specialise in teaching about indigenous foods on their Gundabooka Walk. As you walk around these beautiful Gardens please keep in mind that there is not even one paid gardener! The whole of the Gardens are maintained by teams of dedicated volunteers (200 of them). From weddings to film shoots, Teddy Bear’s Picnics to Spring Fairs, family gatherings to specialised walks and talks, and everything in between, there is a space for every event at the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens. Why not visit them at 2100 Pacific Hwy, Heatherbrae. For opening times visit www.huntergardens.org.au.

January Horoscopes ASTROLOGER KIM FAIRMINER ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH

STAR OF THE MONTH CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY It’s time for your annual reboot with the New Moon in your sign and the beginning of your solar year. (I hope you manage/d to claim the birthday limelight amid the broader festivities.) A deep emotional intensity is available to you in 2024, so be purposeful with your resolutions and intentions. Sweet talk your bank or boss into a more generous deal around the Full Moon. After all, they need you as much as you need them, and your powers of persuasion are currently high. Your mantra for the month is ‘I am magnetically attractive’.

AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY Don’t believe everything you think this month. Disconnect from the matrix and tidy up the mental cobwebs. How far you want to go is up to you. I certainly wouldn’t dream of telling an Aquarius what to do, but humbly offer these suggestions: a silent retreat, a digital detox, more meditation, or going cash only. It needs to be a little inconvenient to lead you to your aha moment around the Full Moon. PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH January is a social and productive month that helps you connect with friends and networks. The New Moon renews your emotional investment in cherished goals and brings active supporters into your orbit. More can be accomplished through collaboration, so don’t be tempted to go it alone. It’s not all brainstorming and vision boards; there’s also work and plenty of it, especially around the Full Moon. ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL Hit the ground running in 2024 and get a head start on career competitors by capitalising on your boss planet, Mars, flexing serious muscle in your ambition sector. Showcase your speed, your strategy, and your all-round-Aries amazingness. The New Moon on the 11th supercharges your professional prowess even further. From the 14th, walk your walk and talk your talk. 72

READ ONLINE

TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY There’s a thoughtful curiosity driving you into the new year as you delve into the mysteries of life and stretch your mind around the big questions. This questing and questioning could lead you to book a trip or trip out on a book. Tend to your inner flame and ensure you have the emotional security and foundational support to sustain your expansive plans for the year ahead. GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE The year opens with Venus sprinkling romance and agreement over your one-to-one partnerships. This is as good for business as it is for personal connections. Important deals and contractual arrangements could be put in place at the New Moon. Curiosity and creative ideas drop in from realms unknown at the Full Moon. Write them down as they have the potential to completely transform your perspective. CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY You wear your heart on your sleeve at the best of times but are particularly sentimental and focused on others at this time of year. The New Moon offers a relationship reset. Commit to regular getaways or date nights, and magic will unfold. The Full Moon redirects your attention to how you’ll pay for it, allowing you to explore what you truly value. Chances are, it’s much more than a number in a bank account. LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST Have you been working too hard? Or working your team too hard? While I’m all for you making hay while Jupiter shines in your career sector, it can’t be at the expense of health and wellbeing. No one (even you!) can maintain peak performance forever. A whole crew backstage helps put on this show, and it’s important to show them (and yourself) care and appreciation. VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER Your preference is purely for pleasure as the new year begins, so don’t return to work too soon. If you do, take it easy(ish) and cement those professional relationships by catching up on your colleague’s holiday adventures and dreaming up your next destination. The New Moon sparks your creativity, so book yourself into a class or workshop or make good resolutions to dust off your erotic novel manuscript.

LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER Are you mid-reno or have in-laws sleeping on your couch? Because there’s a lot going on with home and family. It’s noisy and raucous as one chapter comes to a close and the next one begins. The conflict and conversation reach a crescendo around the Full Moon. If there’s an argument, it will be cathartic and help everyone move on. You will feel more in control once you settle into your own inner sense of comfort. SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER Peer relationships are of prime importance to you this month, so sure up local networks and tap into the grounded wisdom of your neighbourhood. Much can be learnt from and shared with others, and the New Moon encourages you to strike up quick conversations at cafes, libraries and markets. There’s the internet, too, of course, but these opportunities tend to favour a nostalgic analogue approach. SAGITTARIUS 22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER Your New Year’s resolutions are financially focused, and you’re prepared to put in the work to manifest your money goals. It’s a marathon, though, not a sprint, so make sure the tactics you put in place are sustainable in the longterm. Beans on toast may be thrifty, but it is not a forever plan. Pulses aside, there are also potential health benefits to focusing on your essential needs; make this fresh start with the New Moon once the celebration season is behind you.

Bring Home the Coastal Experience Summer is just around the corner, and you know what that means – sun, sand and sea. But what if you could experience the best parts of summer all year round from the comfort of your own home? If you love beachy styles and would like your living space to reflect that, the answer lies in creative interior styling. Coastal design is modern and fresh with light timbers, cool tones and tropical foliage that brings the essence of resort living right to your doorstep.

“The ideal coastal home is a blend of different features that come together to evoke the tranquil serenity of living by the sea,” says Sandra Gage, Group Interior Designer at Clarendon Homes.

“It embraces a natural, calm, refreshing look and feel. The various elements to consider include colours, general finishes, joinery style, furnishings, texture and artwork, through to the final décor touches,” she adds. Colour Palette. A distinctive feature of coastal design is the colour palette, which often comprises of cool pastel blue and teal accents against a backdrop of white, beige and light grey neutrals. Furnishing, floors and joinery in light hued timber are also a very popular choice. Lighter timbers like oak and birch provide a neutral backdrop for the rest of your décor while adding warmth. Another creative way to pull the look together and give it that extra pop of colour is tropical indoor foliage. Not only does some greenery enhance the overall colour profile of your interior, but it also adds an air of tranquility to the home. A great example of coastal décor can be

found at Clarendon Homes’ Manning 31 display home in Lochinvar. “A neutral colour palette consisting of whites, soft greys, sea greens, watery blues and oak timbers is a great place to start. This, combined with the abundance of natural light from large windows or sliding doors and sheer white curtains, further enhances the casual look,” says Sandra.

Materials. The materials you use to decorate your home can add contrast and textural richness to the space. For instance, natural materials such as wicker, rattan and jute are a wonderful way to introduce texture and elevate the warmth of the timber you have chosen to incorporate. White ceramics in the form of planters or decorative items add an earthy but opulent aesthetic. A beautiful blend of some of these complementary materials and textures can be seen at Clarendon’s Boston 37 display home in Forestville. “Finishes have been kept organic and subtle in the Boston 37 display home, with everything from the floor tile, replicating a crushed shell look, through to the natural sandstone on the front façade,” says Sandra. “Elements of coastal design can also be seen in the kitchen where white v-groove cabinetry is mixed with natural oak and repeated in the Butler’s Pantry,” she adds. Furnishing. When it comes to furnishings, lighter hues such as grey, beige and white can act as an elegant canvas for ocean-themed motifs. Apart from colour, however, there are a few other factors that play a crucial role in harmonising the overall look. For instance, coastal design typically aims to create an open and airy feel, and so the placement and alignment of your furniture is key. Look for streamlined pieces arranged to allow ample room for movement. A great demonstration of this furnishing style can be found at Clarendon’s Stamford 38 display home in Warnervale, where the strategic arrangement of furnishings effortlessly achieves the coastal aesthetic, making it a space that exudes both relaxation and sophistication.

anything from small seashells and organic shapes to something a bit bolder like scalloped tile features or ocean-themed wallpaper. Artwork is a great way to give your home the feeling of a luxury resort. Clarendon’s Boston 37 display home in Forestville for inspiring examples of creative coastal décor. “The coastal theme takes centre stage at the Boston 37 in Forestville. Its style replicates a carefree, relaxed and summery feel, typical of the local Northern Beaches lifestyle. Décor. Sandra Gage, Group Interior Designer at Clarendon Homes says: “Texture plays an important part in Coastal interiors – think cane furniture, wicker feature lighting, sisal rugs, and what coastal home wouldn’t have a piece or two of coral on display?” It’s the little details that give a space personality and impact.
