> WED 15 FEB –SUN 5 MAR AT CIVIC THEATRE NEWCASTLE

From Australia's ultimate comedy festivals to thoughtprovoking drama, dance and satire and everything in between, discover performances on stage that will inspire wonder and delight.

With a nod to nostalgia, expect to find familiar favourites reimagined for the stage. The Sunshine Club will shower you in joy with its uplifting message, and Sydney Dance Company reaches new heights with the electric movement and emotional force of Ascent - an arresting portrait of contemporary dance and its potential to move, excite and activate audiences.

At the end of the day, laughter really is the best medicine, so enjoy a serve of satire from The Wharf Revue's Looking for Albanese and the rambunctious roadshows Sydney, and Melbourne's finest comedy festival favourites are guaranteed to deliver.

2023 SET TO LAUNCH AT

It’s a new year, new name and a new slate of killer shows in 2023 for the team at Performance Arts Culture Cessnock (PACC), with the 2023 Season Launch to be held on Friday, 10 February, from 6.45PM.

Formerly Cessnock Performing Arts Centre, the 2023 Season Launch will be the first official event under the new moniker, which has been adopted to accommodate the expanded focus of the centre brought on by the building’s refurbishment. Works currently

underway include exhibition and retail spaces, artist workshop areas, and improvements to accessibility, and are expected to be completed in late 2023.

Local personality and country music stalwart Tara Naysmith and The Red Dirt Band will provide entertainment for the evening. A familiar face to anyone who has attended Cessnock City Council’s Carols in the Park or Spring Awakening events over the years, Tara performs extensively both throughout the

Hunter and far and wide, including at many of Australia’s celebrated country music festivals, including annual events in Tamworth, Central Coast, Cessnock and Mildura. With her rich, powerful vocals, impressive stage presence and songwriting skills, Tara continues to make her mark on the Australian Country Music scene

Taking up hosting duties for the night will be Newcastle-based drag superstar Timberlina. Originally hailing from a small country town in the Central West of New South Wales, a move to the ‘big city’ in her formative years saw Timberlina attend one of the State’s best-ranked Performing Arts High Schools, where she dabbled in all things dance and drama. After a short hiatus from the limelight, Timberlina was re-born in spectacular style and glittery glory in early 2017 and continues to be an ever-evolving chameleon of the performance and hosting world. Timberlina’s over-the-top style, dazzling repertoire, and naughty quick wit will keep you fabulously entertained for hours.

Guests can expect to be treated to sparkling wine and canapés on arrival from 6:45PM, with entertainment set to kick off in the auditorium from 8PM. Tickets are just $49 (or free for members of PACC) and are on sale now at the PACC Box Office, by phone on 4993 4266 or online at www.mypacc.com.au.

Excitement is building across the city for the return of the Newcastle 500 next month following a three-year, COVID-enforced hiatus.

As the much-anticipated season opener of the Supercars Australia Championship series, the event will deliver a range of benefits for Newcastle, boosting visitation, creating jobs and injecting more than $35 million into the local economy.

It will also bring widespread exposure for our city, helping to cement our claims as a major events destination on the world stage. The Newcastle 500 street circuit traces the city's stunning coastline as well as its working harbour, with these images embedded into the minds of tens of millions of motor racing fans around the world.

This year, three big days of racing start on Friday, 10 March, as the best of the best vie for a coveted podium finish. Music fans will also be treated to a weekend of epic performances inside the race precinct, with the massive lineup featuring everyone from Icehouse,

Jon Stevens and the Screaming Jets to the Hilltop Hoods, Thelma Plum, San Cisco, Trials and Newcastle's own Trophy Eyes.

While the race precinct will be bursting with high-octane energy, there are plenty of ways to share in the excitement across the city centre with free community events across the weekend.

Fans can meet all 25 Newcastle 500 Supercars champions on Thursday 9 March, with a driver autograph signing session at Gregson Park, Hamilton, while car enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice on Friday, Saturday and Sunday when Newy Car Club hosts a display of pristine vehicles at the Newcastle Museum Forecourt. Family-friendly fun will also be on offer at Civic Park across the weekend, with art and dance activities, live music performances, free face painting and an epic 27m long slide. We invite everyone to enjoy Newcastle over this action-packed weekend. If you're a visitor to our beautiful city, why not venture further afield with a stroll on our stunning Bathers Way, a browse through our city centre retailers or a bite to eat or drink at one of the many café, bar and restaurant options on offer day and night. There's so much more to explore in Newcastle, and we look forward to sharing it with you all.

The Fun Starts Here!

The Repco Supercars Championship is returning to Newcastle on 10 to 12 March, for the first time since 2019, after cancellations due to the COVID pandemic from 2020 to 2022. Newcastle previously hosted the season finale between 2017 and 2019, but this year the city will be hosting the season opener and cementing its place as a global events city. As a result, Newcastle will come alive with the most anticipated event on the city's sporting calendar and an incredible lineup of live entertainment and community events for all the family to enjoy.

Thrifty Car Rental has partnered with Repco Supercars, and the opening race will be known as the Thrifty Newcastle 500. Thrifty has also become the Official Hire Car Partner for the next two years.

Thrifty's Vice President, Eoin MacNeill, said on signing the partnership: "We are excited to partner with Australasia's leading touring car category, the Repco Supercars Championship, on this new multi-year deal. Supercars has a national footprint, and we are thrilled to be working with them to deliver world-class events from 2023 when we welcome the Gen3 Mustang and Camaro to the grid."

The 2023 Repco Supercars Championship launches the season in Newcastle, with the next

generation of Supercars making their muchanticipated debut. It's Camaro vs Mustang on track for the first time, marking the start of a new era for the sport.

"Newcastle was the perfect choice to kick off the Gen3 era for Supercars," said Supercars Chief Strategy and Revenue Officer Mark Pejic.

"The city's passion for motorsports meant there was no better way to usher in the introduction of the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang than on one of our iconic street circuits in New South Wales' second largest city."

There will be 15 Camaros and 10 Ford Mustangs on the 2023 Supercars grid in Newcastle. Drivers first got behind the wheel of

This year's race is the last in the existing agreement between City of Newcastle and Supercars. Council have committed to partner with Destination NSW to prepare and publicly exhibit a community engagement plan in order to deliver extensive and broad community and stakeholder consultation on the potential to extend the current Supercars 500 agreement beyond 2023.

"The future of the Newcastle 500 beyond the final race is a decision of the NSW Government in the first instance as the consent authority for the race," said Newcastle Lord Mayor Cr Nelmes.

"The Thrifty Newcastle 500 delivers more than $35 million annually in total economic impact and provides a significant stimulus to local tourism and accommodation providers, as well as supporting local jobs. Local tourism and accommodation providers that COVID-19 has heavily impacted will be looking forward to benefiting from the economic stimulus provided by the Newcastle 500's return this year, and adding world-class musicians across two nights of entertainment will ensure even further support for local businesses, particularly throughout the hospitality and night-time economy industries."

The COVID cancellations have enabled the team behind Supercars to better plan for their return to Newcastle.

"The COVID cancellations have certainly been a challenge for us," said Mark Pejic. "But we've been able to use the extra time to plan better and prepare for our return to Newcastle, which in 2023 will feature three days of memorable racing plus eight music acts on stage over two massive nights, led by Aussie icons ICEHOUSE and Hilltop Hoods.

"The most exciting thing about the Thrifty Newcastle 500 is the energy and excitement of the fans. We can't wait to see the grandstands filled and streets lined with passionate fans cheering on their favourite teams and drivers."

A General Admission pass is the perfect way to experience three days of full-throttle on-track action (including two huge nights of entertainment with a record number of performing artists), off-track entertainment, displays and activities and great food and beverage options throughout the precinct.

Kids 12 and under receive free General Admission with a paying adult, and return public transport will once again be included for all ticket purchasers. Thrifty Newcastle 500 concert access is included in all same-day event tickets.

ICEHOUSE will headline the opening night of entertainment on Friday, 10 March, supported by enigmatic Noiseworks frontman Jon Stevens and The Screaming Jets.

ICEHOUSE is one of Australia's most iconic bands and was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2006 as one of the most successful Australian bands of the 1980s and '90s, following international success with hits such as Great Southern Land, Hey Little Girl and Electric Blue.

Led by Dave Gleeson, The Screaming Jets' first-ever performance was at their high school, St Francis Xavier's College, just 4km from the starting line of the famous Newcastle circuit. Jon Stevens will perform the Noiseworks and INXS Collection, showcasing smash hits from both bands. Jon has put together one of the best backing bands in the country.

Aussie hip hop royalty Hilltop Hoods will headline the Saturday night concert supported by some of the best young acts in the country, Thelma Plum, San Cisco, Newcastle's Trophy Eyes and Trials.

Winners of ten ARIA Awards, including twice being named Best Australian Live Act, six of Hilltop Hoods' eight albums have peaked at number one on the ARIA Charts, the most by an Australian band or group in history.

Thelma Plum is an ARIA Award-winning indigenous artist that amassed an enormous following with the release of her debut album

Better in Blak, which was nominated for seven ARIAs.

San Cisco has become one of Australia's most successful independent artists, amassing multiple accolades, millions of streams and critical acclaim through the release of four studio albums, including the band's recent album Between You and Me, which was released in late 2020. The trio has also been successful internationally, touring the world, selling out headline shows and appearing at festivals such as Splendour In The Grass, Lollapalooza and Reading & Leeds.

Trophy Eyes is an Australian punk rock band born and bred in Newcastle that shot to fame with sold-out performances at The

Cambridge Hotel, one of the most coveted live music venues in the Hunter Region.

Trials is an indigenous Australian rapper, songwriter and producer that has toured with the Hilltop Hoods, Pete Murray, Drapht, Archie Roach and Paul Kelly.

Both Friday and Saturday concerts will take place within the track precinct at Foreshore Park, just metres from the circuit that will stage the opening races of the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship.

A Centre for Excellence in our Local Community

INTERVIEW LIANE MORRIS

Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub is gaining a growing reputation as one of the country’s leading contemporary dance and multi-arts organisations for established and emerging artists, young people and the local community. This month I caught up with Cadi McCarthy, Artistic Director and Founder of Catapult, to chat about the year ahead.

INTOUCH: Catapult is gaining national recognition for its work in the contemporary dance space. What are you most proud of from the past year?

Cadi: I am proud of what we as an organisation delivered across our 2022 program, which was incredibly diverse and included professional dance-theatre performances, professional choreographic residencies, dance on film exhibitions, professional children’s

performances, major inter-generational works, the Hunter Youth Choreographic Awards, regional and national tours and more. It was a massive year.

What are you looking forward to in 2023?

2023 is another full year of programming, too much to list everything here, but I have to mention our new year-long emerging artist initiative Activate, supported by the Create NSW Service Needs Funding grant. It provides emerging choreographers and physical theatre practitioners linked to the Hunter with development programs, residencies, mentoring, business development programs, and networking opportunities.

Our Propel choreographic and multidisciplinary residency program, supported by the Australian Council for the Arts, includes Hysteria at The Lock-Up in May. We are also

creating a series of films with singer/songwriter

Ena Malibu and supporting the first stage development of Alexandra Ford’s new work. Our children’s programming continues with the creation of a professional new work, Fragile, for 8–12 years that complements the children’s performance At The Beach.

We will host the Hunter Youth Choreographic Awards again, and our youth initiative, The Flipside Project, will head to Canberra for the MEET-UP Festival. Our professional company will hit the road again with a regional tour of Awkward. It is going to be another busy year.

What programs are available for people to join/participate in?

Catapult Community Programs will continue with our weekly open classes for adults, young people and children. In addition, we provide classes in contemporary technique and Creative Kids programs, and there are classes for pre-professionals through to absolute beginners, all taught by professional dance artists.

Catapult’s youth initiative: The Flipside Project, is a nationally awarded contemporary choreographic dance program where young people work collaboratively with professional choreographers, composers and designers. The Flipside Project challenges pre-conceptions of what dance is and offers new possibilities of what it can be. The project is unique, providing contemporary dance experiences that are non-competitive, creative and reflect the choreographic processes of the professional arts industry. There are three ensembles: junior (8-12), senior (13-18) and emerging artists (18-26) who create original works that are presented to audiences locally and nationally.

We will also return to schools to teach workshops and intensive programs to primary and secondary students. To find out more or to apply for any of our programs, visit www.catapultdance.com.au.

CATAPULT OPEN CLASSES

We o er open classes in Contemporary. Jazz/Commercial and Classical technique from beginners, adults, creative kids, young people and professionals. Find one to suit you! Join us in the studio for one of our many drop-in classes.

ACTIVATE

Activate is Catapult's Emerging Artist Initiative for Choreographers and Physical Theatre Practitioners in the first 5 years of their practice. This year long program includes Skills Development Intensives, Mentoring, Business Development workshop, Networking Events and Supported Residencies. All participants will receive financial support to participate in the program. Proudly supported by Create NSW Service Needs Funds

> 4-18 FEB 2023 AT NEWCASTLE THEATRE COMPANY – 90 DE VITRE ST, LAMBTON

This much-loved Sondheim musical is a Broadway fable about friendship, fame, and the high price of success

The story is told in reverse. It begins with three close friends – a composer, a lyricist and a writer - at their lowest point – jaded and unhappy despite their fame and wealth. Then, it tracks back through their lives to end up 20 years earlier, at the very beginning, when their youth, talent and enthusiasm promise to change the world.

The creative team is headed by long-term friends David Gray (director) and Kieran Norman (musical director).

Choreography is by classically trained dancer Jade Shearman.

The show features three of the Hunter’s leading young music theatre performers: Zac Smith, who recently appeared in Opera Hunter’s The Last Five Years; Freddy Hellier, who was in Metropolitan Players’ Jersey Boys; and Chiara Patalano, who has a degree in Music Theatre from the prestigious Australian Institute of Music (AIM). NEW LOOK NEWCASTLE FRINGE 2023

Australia’s biggest little fringe festival, and Newcastle’s own, has launched its 8th annual festival showcasing 398 amazing local and international artists and 135 performances across two weekends, 9 to 19 March 2023.

Looking fresh with new branding, the festival includes performances across various genres, including cabaret and burlesque, theatre and dance, comedy, music, kids’ shows and choirs.

“With travel restrictions no longer an issue, we are excited to be able to host several international artists as well as acts from interstate,” said Newcastle Fringe Chair Brooke Twyford.

“We are showcasing artists from Spain, Germany, the UK, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Wagga Wagga…and Wallsend. In fact, 20 out of 50+ artist groups are homegrown right here in Newcastle and the Hunter, and we’re very proud of the role we play in the development of our local artists.”

The timing of the festival has been brought forward to avoid the NSW election weekend, and it now coincides with the Supercars Thrifty Newcastle 500, providing locals and visitors to the city with additional entertainment options. City of Newcastle is supporting the festival through the Special Business Rates (SBR) Program with the aim of activating the Hamilton business precinct to increase patronage and foot traffic.

“The Newcastle Fringe will provide a unique cultural tourism opportunity that supports our local Hamilton business community,” said Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes.

“It will add to the vibrancy of the night-time economy and complements our Newcastle After Dark Strategy.”

Hamilton will become the Newcastle Fringe Hub in 2023 with micro-performances, pop-up ticket and merch stands and a fun festival vibe in the James Street Plaza along with performances at The Gal and Hamilton Wesley Church and a family fun weekend at The Sydney Junction Hotel that includes kids’ shows, a jumping castle and face painting. Other festival venues will include The Royal Exchange, Newcastle Comedy Club, and for the first time, the Brunker Community Theatre.

The 2023 line-up is strong on comedy, music across all genres, plenty of adult-only cabaret and burlesque, some great theatre shows and four shows just for the kids.

With tickets already on sale and Newcastle likely to fill up with visitors thanks to the Supercars, it’s a good idea to get your tickets early to avoid disappointment. To view the complete program of performances or to purchase tickets, visit www.newcastlefringe. com.au/events.

LAKE MAC SAILING CALENDAR

With a lake twice the size of Sydney Harbour, it's no surprise that Lake Macquarie is home to some of Australia's most significant sailing events.

The Lake Macquarie sailing calendar brings together state, national and international sailing events being held on the Lake into one consolidated program.

Supported by Lake Macquarie Council, Lake Macquarie Tourism and Australian Sailing, the calendar includes a range of regattas, state, national and international competitions across multiple sailing classes.

Even if you're not a sailer, but enjoy the thrill of watching sailing racing at its best, grab the calendar, pack a picnic, and enjoy a vantage point around the Lake. You'll find the calendar at www.lakemac. com.au/Events-directory/Councilevents/Lake-Macquarie-SailingCalendar.

LAKE MAC WOMEN IN SPORT FESTIVAL

The Lake Mac Women in Sport Festival is designed to celebrate the athletic excellence of local and national professional and amateur sportswomen, increase awareness of the health and social benefits of taking up sport and exercise and encourage more women and girls to remain active throughout their different life stages. This year’s festival will be held from 4-11 March.

The Festival will allow attendees to try out a wide range of sports, engage with local sporting groups and organisations, and educate all members of the community about the positive impact sport can have on women's personal and professional lives, particularly regarding empowerment and confidence.

And if you’re keen to be more involved with the Fringe as a volunteer, working in front of house and being part of the action, the team are taking applications now through www.newcastlefringe. com.au/support-us/volunteers

Organisers encourage fathers, sons, brothers, partners, husbands and friends to get behind their mothers, daughters, sisters, partners, and wives and share the festival experiences with them.

The full schedule will be released later this month at www.lakemac.com.au.

Group Dental Practices – Your Choices?

intouch contributor

DR ALEX HUSZTI BelleDental

We all know the world is becoming a more complicated place – technological advancements coupled with increased compliance, not to mention increases in input and materials costs. Furthermore, artificial intelligence does hold promise, but we still need human oversight. These factors have led to the demise of single-operator, boutique practices. What is the status of group dental (multidentist) practices currently?

Group practices can be largely segmented into health fund-owned clinics, private group practice chains, as well as smaller individual group practices – some single practitioner practices remain.

Most of the group practice chains are modelled around health fund rebates (including the health fund clinics) or the vague concept of "family dentistry". Yes, because of economies of scale, they provide new, modern facilities which are populated by numerous dentists (who frequently do not have the desire to own their own practices), and appointment times are readily available.

However…

Modern equipment and facilities do not necessarily translate into focused, integrated quality dentistry. Yes, these group practices are compliant. However, they frequently lack a disciplined treatment philosophy that integrates

all practitioners towards a common goal: DENTAL STABILITY.

You see, if your business model has developed around health fund rebates, which expire each year, I ask the question: Is dental stability a priority when the business model has developed a reliance on the patients renewing their health insurance rebates each year?

Belledental is gradually moving towards a group practice. Our point of difference is that all practitioners follow one treatment methodology, use the same materials, use identical techniques and identical treatment sequencing. Why?

Because the treatment methodology I've developed over the past 30 years has proven to provide Dental Stability, and this is the most fundamental aspect to patients keeping their teeth for life with the minimum amount of treatment and therefore minimizing expense.

At Belledental – our belief is that the minimum amount of "touches" to your teeth is the best policy. Fewer touches, less cutting and integrated repairability lead to greater dental stability. In other words - teeth for life.

3 Techniques That SAVE Your Teeth

Belledental CRC’s (Composite Resin Crowns)

CRC’s can rebuild teeth to a similar appearance, strength and functionality of conventional crowns with the added benefits of being much more conservative of tooth structure, repairable, and ONE appointment restorations that are often HALF the fee of conventional crowns.

Direct Resin Veneers (Zero cutting of tooth)

Direct Resin Veneers have a multitude of uses –they can be used to improve function, enhance the colour and shape of teeth, modify tooth position as well as in this case, restore teeth that have su ered trauma. Direct Resin Veneers can do this without cutting teeth – all in one visit.

The Remarkable Things are Harder to See

On Tour With the Kid

CHLOE O'SULLIVAN

As February begins, my thoughts have gone from holiday relaxation to making the most of the school year for the kid. It feels like there is so much more for our little ones to navigate. Last year was tough, and it was difficult as the new year rolled around. I struggled to

remember some of the wonderful things that happened as they were so blurred by big and tragic life events.

I needed to find a way to focus on the good and navigate the tough things that come our way. So we made a list.

GOOD NEWS TIN – Every time something great happens. An achievement at school, making a new friend, an experience that makes one of us smile, we will write it down. We will take pen to paper, fold it up and put it in the tin. Then, as the end of the year approaches, we will

sit down over dinner and go through all those little moments. Even if there have been awful things, it is just a reminder that there were still moments of sunshine.

THE CAN I ASK BOOK – The kid is at an age where there are questions you are too embarrassed to ask your mum. As close as we are, I am sure there are things that she looks up online or talks to her friends about. As lovely as her group of friends is, there is going to be some misinformation floating around, so I needed a system where she could come to me no matter what the question is. We have a book sitting on a table at our house that I check every day. Any question that she wants to ask me that she does not feel like she can ask me face to face, she writes in that book. I answer in writing, and we have a little system that lets me know if it is something she wants to talk about further, and we have that conversation. It’s not perfect, but it is working.

THE PROJECT – As a kid, you have extraordinarily little control. There are good reasons for this. No one wants the kid who last lost her mind because I put too much vegemite on her toast in charge. My mum and I, however,

were a team. Where she could, she made me feel like my input was important. It’s hard to tell a kid that they should stand up for themselves if their thoughts and ideas are constantly being dismissed.

During COVID, so many artists I work with lost the ability to make money and perform. I decided on the other side of that to create a space for small shows in case we were to ever land in that situation again, and the kid is going to help me. She is helping make plans for construction and electrical outlets. She will plan and oversee the design and decoration and is working to a budget. She has made a form we are sending to professionals we work with to find out what needs to be included. So far, she has done a fantastic job.

The project should take a year, and aside from feeling like her opinion is valued and her input is important, it is getting her to use the iPad for something practical rather than just scrolling through TikTok!

I hope all these things help make a difference. It will not change the sad things that come our way, but it will give us a new perspective on the good things, which is all we can do. Good luck to all my fellow caregivers. Here we go again.

NSW SENIORS WEEK FESTIVAL 1-12 FEBRUARY 2023

Join the largest celebration for seniors in the southern hemisphere. Try something new, meet new people and have a great time at loads of free and discounted events in your local area. The theme of Seniors Festival 2023 is Celebrate Together, encouraging local seniors to get together, enjoy social connection and celebrate their invaluable contribution to the local community.

PORT STEPHENS

From art classes and yoga to workshops and a special lunchtime concert, there's something for everyone, with the highlight of the 2023 program the First National Seniors Concert, featuring a special 2-course lunch and local singer Drury performing his 'All The Way – The Sinatra Songbook'.

First National Principal Rebecca Dean says that the First National Port Stephens team is honoured to sponsor the 2023 Seniors Concert, to be held at the Nelson Bay Bowling Club.

Mayor Ryan Palmer said the Seniors Festival is an excellent chance for locals to come together with friends or make new connections.

"We know how important social connection is, not only for our mental health but also for our emotional and physical health. Our annual Seniors Festival is a great opportunity to get together, celebrate the wisdom and experience that comes with age, and meet new people," Mr Palmer said.

Cessnock City Council Mayor Jay Suvaal said the event was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our seniors and bring together more than 25 community services and organisations.

"I urge all seniors in our community to participate in this year's Festival and discover the variety of offerings available," said Mayor Suvaal.

"It's an opportunity to try something new and make the most of the celebratory atmosphere. The festival reflects the strength of our community bonds, and Council is very proud to be a part of it."

Festival highlights this year include Celebrating the Joy of Music, a Wine Country Association Concert at the PACC, a Ukulele Dreaming Mini Concert, and It's All in Your Own Backyard hosted by the Hunter Valley Information Centre. NEW Landcare and Sustainable Living Centre

Best-selling author and Gardening

Australia presenter Hannah

Moloney will headline a monthlong program of events and activities to celebrate the opening

of the Landcare and Sustainable Living Centre, umali barai-ku at Booragul.

The centrepiece of celebrations at the new-look centre will be a community open day on Saturday, 18 February, where Moloney will deliver a keynote address and join a panel to share tips on ‘Embracing a good life in Lake Mac’.

“Umali barai-ku means ‘to do for the earth’ in Awabakal language, and that’s the rallying call we’re inviting our community to embrace through these celebrations,” said Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser.

Built on the site of the former Landcare Resource Centre at Booragul, the Landcare and Sustainable Living Centre features indoor and outdoor community meeting spaces, as well as updated kitchen and office spaces for Council staff and volunteers.

To view the complete program of events and activities, or find out about local Landcare groups near you, visit www. lakemacquarielandcare.org.au.

PETS OF THE MONTH

Jezze is 18 months old, brave, smart and resilient. Jezze likes to hang out with you wherever you are; he wants to be there too. A fantastic little companion, he is quite talkative and loves a chat. Being young, he is still very playful. Due to his background, Jezze needs some time to settle and someone understanding of this, but once he is comfortable, he is an absolute delight.

for Love

Meet Rusty, a nearly 4-year-old Australian Kelpie. The first thing you need to know about Rusty is that he is SMART. He wants to “work“ (think collecting sticks and going for walks), but when work is done for the day, Rusty enjoys curling up and sleeping at your feet. Rusty has retired from a property, so he needs an owner that knows the breed and is happy to activate his mind with puzzles, training and activity. Someone is going to be very lucky to adopt Rusty. Could that person be you?

Please contact Dog Rescue Newcastle if you’re interested in adopting either Jezze or Rusty www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au

February Horoscopes

ASTROLOGER TANYA OBREZA ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH

STAR OF THE MONTH

AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY

This year Jupiter encourages you to reach out in as many directions as possible. Jot down all your ideas and intuitive flashes, so they're not forgotten by the time you need them. Widen your circle of contacts if you can. Family numbers may grow, perhaps through marriage or a partner, a new flatmate, birth or even a new pet. Parents could also offer help, be it financial or otherwise. It's also an excellent time to make investments of lasting value, such as real estate. Travel may be related to work or family matters. Just beware of extravagance.

PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH

Now that you've no more patience for allconsuming emotional clutter, it's a good time to pare down relationships. A new moon on the 20th forces a "make or break" decision in nottoo-serious love affairs, and even established partnerships are put through their paces. You might need to give others more room to move than is comfortable for you, but in doing so, you'll gain a better perspective. Children also need extra attention.

ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL

February marks the beginning of a new 13year cycle. Think back 13 years, and you may recognise that then, too, was a time of good fortune or new beginnings. In 2023, a confident Jupiter promises significant change, particularly a brand-new image. If single, prepare for a veritable parade of admirers. If attached, expect to be especially close to your partner. This is also likely to be a year of travel and gaining new experiences.

TAURUS 21 APRIL

– 20 MAY

It's a time of sudden, perhaps bizarre, changes which, in turn, could incite feelings of panic. Try to enjoy the moment and don't plan too far ahead. This month's full moon on the 6th also brings financial change - money and status may be lost or gained. In matters of the heart, heated passions forge a whole new arrangement for loved-up Taureans. Singles seek close encounters, while couples embrace their nearest desires.

GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE

Jupiter becomes a favourite house guest this year, bringing joy, new friendships and optimism - as well as unlimited potential. As we rarely get something for nothing, expect some hard work as well. Be prepared to ditch dead-end plans. This will ready you for any new challenges ahead. Travel, love and laughter also feature. Fortunately, money is not too much of a problem, so you can afford to play as hard as you work.

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

Jupiter brings an upsurge in work satisfaction via a new job or better career or financial conditions. If you haven't yet found your proper calling, you'll probably do so very soon. And with Jupiter in this most public of places, you may also receive a tad more attention. Rather than trying to avoid the limelight - take this opportunity to flaunt your ambitions to a wider world as new frontiers become real possibilities.

LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST

Where have you been, my elusive friend? Perhaps in search of love's rainbow. If so, you're probably ready to click your heels and wish for home. This is where all Leos will be happiest this month - taking comfort in the familiar. And, yes, you could be forgiven for feeling slightly cheated in the love stakes lately. So if fresh romantic prospects soar in on February's breeze, don't waste a minute. You deserve a glorious time.

VIRGO 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER

This year Jupiter highlights your sector of property, joint finances and partnerships. For some, this can indicate an inheritance or financial boost - possibly via a windfall or financial benefit. Whatever happens, it's a time when Jupiter encourages you to try something new. Your mind is energised, and you're busier with friends, projects and meetings. Don't rule out passion either - kiss those loveless nights goodbye.

LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER

Thanks to a super-confident Jupiter, this year, you find the courage to be yourself without fear or apology. Work, too, is a happier place to be - especially for those involved in creative work. Singles may marry or form a relationship with an older or mature individual - very likely,

karmic in nature. The great news? The promise of a love that lasts. For those with children, this is a year when you could feel particularly proud of them.

SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER

February's cosmic activity rocks your world. Most importantly, feisty Mars dramatically revamps your romantic life. If you've been muddling through a tiresome tryst that no longer feeds mind, body or soul, it's possibly time to make a clean break. At the same time, Venus draws new friends into your social sphere. Sexual energy fuels passion and spontaneity. Work also keeps you busy, but rest up if you're tired.

SAGITTARIUS

22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER

Sociable Jupiter steps into your sector of romance and fun and stays for an entire year. Jupiter will take all of your favourite things, like love, parties, children and entertainment - and make them even better. Venus, too, has surprises up her sleeve. This sexually alluring planet triggers the law of attraction your way. Money should also come more easily. Just don't take foolish risks. Clear credit cards, don't add to them.

CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY

Keep your financial options open until the 21st, as you'll have better alternatives by month's end. Although you're clear about what needs to happen, you're not sure how to do so. Where's the help going to come from? From your innate strength and determination. You have so much more inner force to draw on, Capricorn. Warrior Mars provides extra courage, and you'll provide the rest. Your fearlessness is legendary.

Retain with Ease

For local home renovators and landscapers seeking retaining wall solutions, there’s only one name you need to remember: RetainEase.

Owned and operated by Gavin Kitching, RetainEase provides concrete products for landscaping projects, including retaining walls, fencing and more.

Concrete sleepers from RetainEase are an attractive, durable and cost-effective alternative to timber, and the team prides itself on five-star customer service and a consistently highquality product.

Gavin is a builder by trade with over 25 years of experience in the building and construction industry, having worked on residential, commercial and industrial sites. He discovered the concrete sleeper system when doing his own home renovations and realised there was

no one around locally supplying this type of product.

“The RetainEase retaining wall system is, as our slogan suggests: the easy way to retain. It’s a setand-forget product that is super quick to install and will last for decades to come,” says Gavin.

“The benefits of using a concrete sleeper retaining wall are endless, but to name a few – they won’t warp, twist or rot over time with the impact of moisture or water; termites won’t eat them; they have quicker installation time than a traditional block wall, which saves on both time on-site and the cost of labour; there’s no rendering or painting required with a variety of colours and styles available; and it’s a fully engineered product that has been used in projects up to eight metres in height (with tailored engineering).”
