It seems Spring has indeed Sprung in this issue with a plethora of outdoor events enabling us to shake off the cobwebs and get out into the fresh air.

The Gin & Jazz Festival gets its long-awaited return this month with two full days of soaking in the spring vibes and sipping on some sensational gins (read more on page 27). Also heading outdoors is Opera Hunters La Traviata at MAP mima, Speers Point Park, the annual Living Smart Festival, Sculpture in the Vineyards, Amaze & Play at Hunter Valley Gardens, the Big Picture Fest, Dashville Skyline and plenty of outdoor action from the New Annual Festival. School Holidays are also looming towards the end of the month, so of course, our School Holiday Guide is jam-packed full of activities to keep the kids busy (and worn out!) The super-sized Sea Monsters exhibition at Newcastle Museum is a great place to start. And if one set of monsters isn't quite enough to bring them into line – try the two worlds of ancient creatures brought to life at Erth's Prehistoric World. Maybe a Parkour workshop or Learn to Sail program? As always, the School Holidays Guide (page 47) has you covered. Enjoy!

CREDIT: Miles Noles Photography. Without a doubt, this issue sees the most vibrant and colourful cover of of past and is also an ode to Spring, bursting to life with glorious sunflowers. It is, of course, Van Gogh Alive - the world's most visited multi-sensory experience, which will come to life this month as part of the City of Newcastle's second New Annual Festival. Make no mistake – this is no ordinary art exhibition!

The traditions of tiptoeing through silent galleries and viewing paintings from afar are thrown out the window for this experience. THE BIG PICTURE FEST

Forty years on, and with their messages of positive engagement in Indigenous rights and environmental protection more relevant than ever, Australian icons Goanna return to celebrate their multi-platinum, game-changing debut album ‘Spirit of Place’. In the early ‘80s in the midst of Aussie Rock’s golden age, Goanna helped forge a new Australian identity. The iconic ‘Solid Rock’ stoked a fire for Indigenous rights that hasn’t gone out, while the anthem of ‘Let The Franklin Flow’ was a call to arms for the emerging environmental movement. Soulful, lyrical, brimming with musicality and creative volatility, Goanna mixed classic folk song craft with spirited roots rock, helping to establish a musical thread that remains vital and ubiquitous in Australian music today. In 2022, Shane Howard, Rose Bygrave, Marcia Howard and Graham Davidge, with special guests, embark on a new journey, reigniting the Goanna spirit once more and paying homage to their classic songs. Music fans in Newcastle were all shattered to hear that Brian and Jo Lizotte would be putting their beautiful venue up for sale. The building has stood in Lambton for over a century but has never felt more alive than in the last 14 years. Thanks to the dedicated staff and crew that have come and gone over the years, Newcastle patrons have come to expect nothing but the best. The mouthwatering food, the world-class entertainment, and the personal service made Lizotte’s the venue of choice for so many musicAnyonelovers.who has worked in the industry knows they are not hours that are conducive to a social or family life. So as much as we will all miss the Lizotte’s we know and love, we all wish Brian and Jo the best on their new adventure. Despite this sad news, there are still things to look forward to on the horizon. One of them would be the addition of a Newcastle date on the national tour of Velvet Rewired in April 2023. Continuing the amalgam of variety and concert, Velvet Rewired offers sheer entertainment in an ode to discotheque and Studio 54 - the infamous club synonymous with cultural acceptance, wild parties and endless good times. Much like Studio 54, Velvet Rewired is blind to colour, creed, class, gender, size and sexuality, welcoming audiences to a nightclub, a state of mind, and ultimately, a fantasy. Rewired follows the original Velvet, born in the sequins and dust of the Adelaide Fringe Festival. Honouring the likes of Diana Ross, The Bee Gees, Earth Wind & Fire and The Weather Girls in an explosion of funk emulating the hedonistic clubs of the 1970s, Velvet Rewired takes us about as close to New York’s Studio 54 as we’re likely to get. Newcastle will host seven performances at the Civic Theatre, Newcastle, from April 19. For more information and tickets, visit civictheatrenewcastle.com.au.www.

"The versatility of Foreshore Park ensures we're able to attract major events such as this to Newcastle, which will bring an influx of visitors to our city at a time when the local tourism industry needs it most and as local operators and businesses recover from the pandemic," said Cr "We'reNelmes.excited to partner with Andrew Kay Management to bring the impressive Van Gogh Alive to a regional city for the first time in Australia as part of Newcastle's New Annual festival."

intouch: How long has Grande Experiences been running - when was it first created? Bruce: In 2009, our plan for a multimedia exhibition was born. It took two years to build a technology system (which Grande Experiences calls Sensory4) that would create the sort of immersive experience we had in mind, harnessing multiple projectors, multiple screens, music and other elements. The exhibition system also had to be portable, packed into two shipping containers, sent around the world and set up in a new city within seven days.

"The Grand Pavilion is not only home to the Sensory 4™ Gallery, which houses Van Gogh Alive, but it features four additional immersive spaces, including the instagrammable Van Gogh's Bedroom, Van Gogh's Café Terrace at Night, where you can sit and enjoy a glass of Taittinger Champagne, the amazing infinity Sunflower Room, where you can stand in a never-ending field of sunflowers and the spectacular Starry Night Room which allows visitors to walk on air through Van Gogh's famous painting 'Starry Night'." Grande Experiences' state-of-the-art SENSORY4™ immersive gallery combines with a tailored exhibition space to allow the projection of enormous crystal-clear images. Set to an evocative classical score, a thrilling display of over 3,000 inspirational images transforms the world around you. You will truly lose yourself in the vibrant colours and vivid details of Van Gogh'sFounderwork.and CEO of Grande Experiences, Bruce Peterson began his fascinating career as a PE teacher. He considers himself a humble Aussie bloke who has managed to scale the heights of the art world, and this attitude has led to his pioneering exhibitions and experiences that regularly headline some of the world's most prestigious established and emerging museums and galleries, including the National Geographic Museum in Washington, Madrid's Arte Canal, Russia's Artillery Museum and the ArtScience Museum in Singapore. He holds a Bachelor of Education and aims to educate and share the pleasure of art not just with those who already appreciate great art and culture but also with those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to be exposed to it or might be intimidated by it. We caught up with Bruce to learn more about Grande Experiences and Van Gogh Alive.

Van Gogh Alive is housed in The Grand Pavilion, a giant 70m X 25m bespoke marquee. In fact, The Grand Pavilion is the largest touring showroom in the southern hemisphere and features a themed bar & café space.

"We can't wait to unveil the extraordinarily beautiful Grand Pavilion, which we have designed specifically to showcase Van Gogh Alive," said Andrew Kay.

20 In 2011, the first display of Van Gogh Alive was held at Singapore's ArtScience Museum. We can now proudly say that Van Gogh Alive is the most visited immersive, multi-sensory experience in the world, having been presented in over 85 cities to more than 8.5 million visitors. How many people does it take to produce/set up the Experience? We have a very talented in-house team of creative designers, motion graphic experts, graphic designers, and skilled audio-visual production managers who work together to take an idea from concept stage to final execution. Having said that, we are a lean company given the reach and magnitude of what we have been able to achieve. Grande Experiences currently employs about 40 staff to create, produce and license our experiences globally. So it's certainly a team effort! Why was Van Gogh chosen? Van Gogh's works always caught my eye from an early age simply because of the colours. The vibrancy of Van Gogh's artwork is ideally suited to large-scale immersive projection environments. Our cutting-edge technology allows visitors to examine his broad brushstrokes in intricate detail, whilst simultaneously being engulfed by the bold colours and beauty of his masterpieces on a jaw-dropping scale. There is also significant interest and intrigue with audiences globally around Van Gogh's story and the challenges he faced with mental health. We are storytellers at our core, so it is vital for us to use our technology, creativity and reach to help shed light on such an important issue. Through our multi-sensory approach to art and culture, we can stimulate all of the human senses together to tell a story that impacts people emotionally. How were the pieces selected to be included? With storytelling at the forefront of what we do, it was critical that we could display the complete works of Van Gogh in chronological order to guide visitors on a journey of his entire life as an artist. From his early beginnings in The Netherlands right through to his final works in Auvers-sur-Oise, visitors can truly get a sense of his creative evolution and leave the experience with a deeper understanding of who Van Gogh was, not just as an artist but as a person. Our Van Gogh Alive experience includes over 3,000 images of his masterpieces, sketches, drawings, letters and inspirational landscapes at enormous scale. Quality is of the utmost importance in everything that we do, so we have to carefully select imagery that can be projected onto four or even twelve-metre-high ceilings without losing its integrity.

Did you have to gain access to the originals to create the vision for this? No, we were able to gather everything we needed to create the experience without accessing the originals. Of course, we always do our homework, so a trip to the museums and galleries across Europe and around the world really helped us craft how we wanted to tell Van Gogh's story. How is the vision created? Is it all Van Gogh via digital art, or are there parts that had to be extended by artists? Or computer? The integrity of the art is fundamental to us, but so is the animation that forms an integral part of our experiences. Our in-house creative team works meticulously to ensure that they add movement and synchronise the artwork to music in a way that does not stray from its original meaning. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to bring the art to life. (Continued)

"THE FULL EXPERIENCE IS CAREFULLY CURATED AND CHOREOGRAPHED TO AN EVOCATIVE MUSICAL SCORE, LAYERED WITH SUGGESTIVE AROMAS THAT IGNITE ONE'S IMAGINATION AND STIRS ONE'S SOUL."

Is this the future of art? Yes, we believe this is the future of art. While immersive experiences are here to stay, by no means are they here to detract from seeing original art in a museum or gallery. Instead, our mission is to engage more people in art and culture by creating an accessible, nonintimidating environment for people all around the world to enjoy and share with others. My background as a teacher taught me that to educate, you have to engage. And to engage, you have to entertain. With that in mind, we believe that as long as we continue to do that, we will remain global leaders in the arts and cultureFromindustry.themoment you walk through the doors, you're transported into the art itself by weaving imagery from 28 state-of-theart projectors onto a tapestry of surfaces seamlessly and magically bringing the beauty and wonder of masterpieces to a larger-thanlife like never before. The presentation in the S4 Gallery runs for approximately 45 minutes. Visitors then typically spend 60-90 minutes in the building. The experience is carefully curated and choreographed to an evocative musical score, layered with suggestive aromas that ignite one's imagination and stirs one's soul. Our travelling VGA can even involve integrated themed food and beverage offerings into the broader experience to engage more senses and amplify the visitor experience further.

21 are very excited to see what the future holds for that space! Should art galleries be worried? No, art galleries shouldn't be worried. In fact, they should embrace this new technology to broaden their audiences and get more people involved with their institutions. Tourists will still visit traditional art galleries and museums, whether they are public, private or corporate collections. We are not replacing objects or artwork. We just create a fantastic enhancement and a different experience that engages people in a more multi-sensory way. We are currently working with The National Museum of Australia in Canberra to showcase Connection: Songlines from Australia's First Peoples in a spectacular immersive experience. We also partnered with Newfields over in the USA to establish a permanent immersive gallery inside their museum, which just finished displaying Van Gogh Alive and has now switched to Monet & Friends Alive. What is being planned for the future? We have big plans for the future! Our touring experiences are being licensed globally, with confirmed venues secured for 2023 and well into 2024. We have also just announced that Monet & Friends Alive will be our next experience on display inside THE LUME Melbourne, which is one of our permanent locations. After opening just nine months ago, THE LUME Melbourne has welcomed over 600,000 visitors through its doors, so we

What other multimedia immersive experiences have been produced or are in planning? Our diverse range of blockbuster experiences includes The Leonardo Da Vinci Collection, Monet & Friends Alive, Planet Shark, Alice – A Wonderland Adventure, Digital Nights, Connection – Songlines from Australia's First Peoples (a spectacular immersive experience), Street Art Alive, Dalí Alive and of course Van Gogh Alive. Our in-house design and production teams have many new and wonderful experiences in creation, ready for release in 2022 and beyond.

As a part of New Annual, Civic Theatre has programmed some incredible shows, including Bell Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors, Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub's Grappling for the Edge, and Airness by Knock + Run Theatre Co. In addition, Civic Theatre has two special feature productions for New Annual: Radial and Trolleys. Radial (2 October) is a unique collaboration between Tantrum Youth Arts' Accelerate Ensemble and Back to Back Theatre from Geelong. Radial is a portrait of Newcastle's community in motion filmed on a circular track, performers and the landscape are captured in 360 degrees. Don't miss the free screening of the resulting film at Civic Theatre. Trolleys (1 + 2 October) by Shaun Parker and Company is part dance, part ballet, part outdoor spectacle. Five shopping carts randomly appear in a public space. Two meet and fall in love. A lone cart grapples to find a friend. Three others revolt and ignite a dance of anarchy. Trolleys is a free, live street performance you can enjoy outside the Civic Theatre. After each performance there will be a free 20-minute Hip Hop workshop taught by a Shaun Parker & Company dancer. The Comedy of Errors by Shakespeare is one of his early plays, a farcical comedy with most of the humour coming from slapstick and mistaken identity. Shipwrecked and separated 33 years earlier, two sets of long-lost twins miraculously find themselves in the same city on the same day. What could possibly go wrong? It's a play about misguided love, mistaken imprisonment, and chaotic mishaps, leading to an unbelievably crazy day for the bumbling twins! Produced by Bell Shakespeare and directed by long-term collaborator Janine Watson, this is a beautiful story about reunion wrapped up in an evening of entertainment and Forlaughter.tickets visit civictheatrenewcastle.com.au or phone 4929 1977.

ARIES 21 MARCH – 20 APRIL

GEMINI 21 MAY – 21 JUNE Calm your mind, Gemini. This month, the planets encourage you to listen to your inner self and throw your usual logic out the door. It’s time to follow your instincts; stay too set in your ways, and you could miss out on a rare opportunity. Your intuition may take you along a few risky paths, though they’ll all add to that treasure of experience we call “life”. Enjoy the adventure.

SAGITTARIUS 22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER

The cosmos continues to give you the go-ahead for practically anything. Money pressures are off, so there’s more cash to play with. You’ll be drawn to adventure and relationships that develop a crazy rhythm and spontaneity. Stability may be compromised, but with delightful results. Love tangles aside, there’s new openness with friends and family too. It’s a welcome turning point.

In this delightful year, the planets’ influence brings a relaxed pace to your life and a taste for luxuries. But the year isn’t lacking in progress. There’s plenty of work for those who want it. At home, a sense of belonging becomes important. For singles ready to settle, the cosmos now gives you the chance to find love. A long-distance affair could also turn out easier than you have imagined. More importantly, you won’t settle for anyone less than the very best. Apparently, the fun may start as soon as October. Also, be prepared for impulsive visits or travel.

29 STAR OF THE VIRGOMONTH 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER

The Sun’s stopover through your sector of subconscious inspires you to delve into spiritual dimensions. Whether you choose to investigate psychic skills, journey into fantasy or develop an interest in psychology, your inner psyche is studied. Don’t let anyone tell you that you just want to escape reality, as this month is about accessing the truly inspirational world within.

ASTROLOGER TANYA OBREZA ON WHAT’S IN THE STARS THIS MONTH.

TANYA OBREZA was born in Slovenija and emigrated to Australia with her parents as a young girl. It was during her first visit to England that Tanya was introduced to astrology, and in 1980 she gained her London Faculty of Astrological Studies qualifications. Over the years, Tanya has established an extensive and wide-ranging international following, mostly due to her reassuring, down to earth presence.

LIBRA 23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER

Step cautiously through early September, when your emotions run wild. Perhaps your inner voice isn’t as all-knowing as usual. It may therefore be far more sensible to listen to others. Still, not everything gives cause for concern. The cosmos sets the scene for romantic delights after the 20th, including new playmates. With finances also on side, the occasional luxury is a must.

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

SCORPIO 23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER

You have a few issues in limbo, which doesn’t make for a good night’s sleep - especially if money’s involved. There has to be a way of finalising matters, even if it means getting professional advice. But when you’re this strapped for cash, options can look limited. You don’t like turning to family for help, but in pooling resources with others, late September promise some financial respite. A happier way to end the month.

Don’t feel besieged if work is testing you. Some planets argue for a career change - others don’t. There’s no need to decide right now. Stay patient because dreams need time to become a reality. Thankfully, with matters of the heart, it’s all systems go! But let love develop at a steady pace. Again, don’t be in too much of a hurry to commit. Keep the focus on having fun, and the rest will follow.

LEO 23 JULY – 22 AUGUST

CAPRICORN 22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY

The planets put pressure on career matters. If you’re occasionally overwhelmed by the enormity of your workload, don’t be. Once you’ve stepped into the breach, fate has little choice but to move forward with you. One warning: until the 15th, curb your spending – a difficult ask, perhaps. Still, not everything in September gives cause for concern. Love and friendship look delightful, particularly after the 21st.

You’re not out of the woods yet, Scorpio. Sure, you could be questioning if it’s all worth it - or whether you should abandon what seems to be a fruitless quest. All you need is a new perspective and plenty of fresh air. You should be out in the elements - even if it means a few days away. So divert all calls to message-bank while you answer a stronger calling. Get back to nature for a while.

TAURUS 21 APRIL – 20 MAY Keep your financial options open until the 12th, as you’ll have better alternatives by month’s end. Although you’re clear about what needs to happen, you’re not sure how to do so. Where’s the help going to come from? From your innate strength. You have so much more inner force to draw on, Taurus. Warrior Mars provides extra courage, and you do the rest. Your fearlessness is legendary.

AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY

PISCES 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH

Romance makes its mark in many ways this month. Some fall head over heels. Others reach a watershed. Either way, Piscean hearts beat with a new intensity. Singles have their flings but also consider commitment. Couples are more willing to offer mutual support. All in all, it’s a month when the planets give you an easier time. You can also afford to spend a few dollars - keep your luxuries affordable.

September brings a significant turning point. Quell the tendency to scatter energies in too many directions, and a long-standing ambition could be realised this month. There may be one final period of upheaval around the 10th, so until then, don’t bite off more than you can chew. In romance, you’re ready to combine the thrill of romance with strong emotional commitment. Discover the delights of laid-back love.

The history of Hungerford Hill winery is long and complex. Home to the only twohatted restaurant in the Hunter Valley, Muse Restaurant, the quality of the experience for visitors to the cellar door is second to none, backed up by winemaking tradition and innovation led by Chief Winemaker Bryan Currie. Hungerford Hill is tradition fused with innovation at its finest. Originally a Hungerford family owned and run cattle farm that spread to the current site of Hunter Valley Gardens and Cypress Lakes Resort, Hungerford Hill was established as a vineyard by accountant and entrepreneur John Parker in 1967. The Australian wine industry was experiencing a renaissance at the time, with many professionals and investors keen to explore the new interest in table wine as an accompaniment to food, with sherry and port becoming less popular. Parker opened a cellar door in 1970 and developed the first wine tourism complex a couple of years later. By 1985 however, Parker lost control of the business in a hostile takeover, and the winery was purchased by Southcorp, who also acquired vineyards in the Tumbarumba and Hilltops regions to add to the label. Despite this, the brand languished until James Kirby purchased the property in 2002. Under Kirby, the label flourished, and the iconic cellar door at One Broke Road was built. Then, in 2016, Kirby sold to Sam Arnaout of Iris Capital, now the current owner When Arnaout took over at Hungerford Hill, he employed Bryan Currie as Winemaker. Currie had worked at Calabria Wines and McWilliams for many years and had spent some time in China, where his wife was working. He was attracted to the role because it was based in NSW and utilised fruit from Tumbarumba.

"We're having a lot of fun creating Spanishstyle wine using the early ripening Tempranillo and balancing that out with the late-ripening Graciano from Hilltops. It's a very different wine from our standard with no real oak influence. It's a balanced wine, and combining the two varieties; it works better."

"I'd been working with fruit from this region all my career, and I wanted to continue to do that," said Bryan. "At the same time, I loved the idea that Hungerford Hill had fruit available from several different climates, enabling us to create a full range of Bryanwines."alsospent his early career in Southern Italy, which has provided invaluable experience in working with fruit from hotter and drier climates."Thelast decade has seen an expansion of Southern European varieties that work in these hotter climates. Our climate is changing, and I'm enjoying experimenting with varieties such as Tempranillo and Graciano. Most of our wines are single vineyard with a concentration of character that shows the terroir and place that it's grown in. It's important to me that the personality of the wine comes from the place, not the winemaker."

WORDS LIANE MORRIS

The Hungerford Hill vineyard is heavy dark clay soil that produces a blacker, denser wine and is home to the iconic cellar door, Muse restaurant and Sculpture Courtyard. Hilltops is a cool climate with granite-based soil and grows Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Malbec. Tumbarumba is a cold climate that produces softer fruit for Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

We’ve been experimenting with plant proteins like pea or potato starch. It hasn’t affected the taste of the wine at all, and it’s wonderful to be able to offer a vegan-friendly wine.”

“Similarly, we are aware that a lot of people are seeking preservative-free wines because they may have reactions to sulphites. Unlike plant proteins, going preservative-free alters the wine's taste and texture. It’s less fruity, loses intensity and is more textural and savoury. It’s almost a different category of wine altogether, but we’ve been creating preservative-free wines for some time Hungerfordnow.”Hillhas a strong foothold in the history and traditions of winemaking in the Hunter Valley, with world-class, award-winning wines representing the full range of styles and regions. So, what’s next? “I’m keen to push the envelope,” said Bryan. “What other styles of wine can we make? Some of the greatest wines in the world are often blends, so I’m excited to be experimenting in this area. In addition, we’ve got some impressive changes coming to the site at Hungerford Hill. We’re looking to develop the site so that it is closer in intent to the original design. Like the Opera House, the building at One Broke Road was never fully realised to the architect’s design; they ran out of money at the time. The architect, Walter Barda, had a grander vision which we’re hoping to achieve sometime in the near“Tofuture.”besuccessful in these challenging times, it’s important to be flexible and to be able to adapt. The Hunter Valley has always been a tricky place to farm, and it’s no different with a vineyard. It can be subtropical in summer and dry and cold in winter. This variability in seasonal climate makes the Hunter Valley wines stand out, and the trick is to be relaxed and not too stressed about it. Our different growing regions, all within NSW, give our wines the character that defines them.”

A Standard Tasting at Hungerford Hill is just $10 pp and includes wines from an extensive list with knowledgeable staff on hand to talk you through all your selections. Bookings can be made through the website at www. hungerfordhill.com.au However you choose to experience Hungerford Hill, its long-standing tradition coupled with innovation, the sheer breadth of choice that represents the full spectrum of the wines of NSW and the dedication to quality will guarantee an enjoyable occasion that you will want to repeat time and again.

34 Briar Ridge Vineyard | 593 Mount View Road, Mount View

Nestled against the mountainside of Mount View, in what is widely regarded as the most picturesque area of the Hunter Valley, is a small boutique winery named Briar Ridge. This ‘classically radical’ vineyard is quickly gaining a reputation for innovative winemaking, with the winner of the 2022 Young Achiever of the Year at the Hunter Legend Awards, Alex Beckett, at the helm, steering a bright future for the winery. This innovation is firmly supported by a foundation in tradition and well-established vines that enjoy a long history. It is these vines, planted 50 years ago in 1972, that the winery is celebrating this year with their biggest event in a decade – the Briar Ridge Vineyard 50th Jubilee Long Lunch in the Vines to be held on 5 November 2022. The history of the winery began in 1972 when Murray Robson planted the first vines - pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, some Portuguese port varieties described as merlot, a small amount of chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon, in what was then called Squire Vineyard, and by 1975 the wines produced from these vines were already winning gold medals. The name changed to Robson Vineyard in 1978, by which time it had developed into a fully-fledged winery. Fast forward to 1987, and John Davis purchased the property because, as a geologist, he recognised the unique climate, topography and soil that the area offered winemaking.

As the original owner wrote on a plaque that is on display at the winery, “Mount View is a tiny valley over 600 feet above the surrounding plains. This height has created a microclimate that avoids temperature extremes and allows the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly over a longer period, thus assisting the aromatics and flavour depth of all wines.” In 1988 the Davis family reoriented the rows and replanted the vineyard. In 1991 they established one of the very first vintage wine clubs, which remains the longest-running contemporary wine club in the Hunter Valley. Around that same time, Hunter Valley legendary winemaker Karl Stockhausen joined Briar Ridge, releasing his first vintage in 1991, which won best wine in show at the Hunter Valley Wine Show for his shiraz. The Stockhausen label wines continue to win many awards for the winery.

Briar Ridge is a James Halliday 5-star rated winery and recently took out the award for “Other White (& Blends) Wine of the Year” at the 2023 Halliday Wine Companion Awards with the 2021 Limited Release Albariño by winemaker Alex Beckett. The winery has also been awarded a gold medal at this week’s Hunter Valley Wine Show for the 2013 Stockhausen Signature Semillon.

The Briar Ridge Vineyard 50th Jubilee Long Lunch in the Vines is an exclusive event with tickets available at a cost of $250 per person. Members have been given access to pre-released tickets, but to celebrate in style, the event is now being opened to the public. In a first for the winery, the event will be held alongside the vines themselves with three-course catering by the two-hatted Muse Restaurant, canapes and sparkling upon arrival, all wines by Briar Ridge Vineyard – large format, museum, rare and single vineyard wines, live music, prizes to be won and a charity auction with proceeds going to local children’s charities. Auction items will include wine, food and wine experiences and private masterclasses with the Briar Ridge winemaker, Alex Beckett, as well as lots of other goodies. MC for the day will be auctioneer and real estate personality Sean Redpath of McGrath Newcastle, and Alex Beckett will be on hand to take the guests through their wine experiences of the day. Bus transfers from Cessnock, Pokolbin and Lovedale areas are also included in the ticket price. This once-in-a-decade event is sure to sell out. CRC’s can rebuild teeth to a similar appearance, strength and functionality of conventional crowns with the added benefits of being much more conservative of tooth structure, repairable, and ONE appointment restorations that are often HALF the fee of conventional crowns.

1. Minimally invasive – salvaging valuable tooth structure effectively can extend restorative life cycles and minimise the loss of tooth structure at each restorative cycle. This is how BelleDental intends to help you keep your teeth for life.

Alex has had a career focused on lowbiologic cost reconstructive cosmetic dental care – common sense teeth for life. intouch contributor DR ALEX HUSZTI BelleDental Doing MORE with LESS

8am–12pm BelleDentalValentine www.belledental.com.au f Call us today on (02) 4946 9122 I'm not going to engage in a depressive tome on what faces the world and dentistry in 2022 –you already know your challenges – we all have them, and to some degree, we share similarities around these challenges. Instead, I'd like to address one of dentistry's critical issues in 2022.

Direct Resin Veneers (Zero cutting of tooth)

Cost. Yes, good dentistry is not cheap. And cheap dentistry is not good. Much of the benefits of well-thought-out dental strategies are not about finding ways to afford dentistry (a sales tactic) – it's about doing more with less. Doing more with less has been a primary tenant of dental care at BelleDental for the last 20 years.Doing more with less is not about cheapskating on dental materials; it's not about discounting, and it is certainly not about following 'fashion.' Doing more with less is about how we strategise treatment plans for our patients that are:

3. Prioritised and Phased: Not every tooth in your mouth has equal value. Every plan should determine the most in need. Not because we want to neglect and potentially lose teeth – instead, it's about the allocation of a vital resource - money. At each stage of a phased treatment plan, effective allocation of even limited resources can avoid future problems – it's like compound interest – regular conservative allocations of funds can reap bigger long-term dental rewards.

42 • HEALTH & WELLBEING 3 Techniques That SAVE Your Teeth

2. Simple. I know implants and 'digital dentistry' are the flavours of the month. Both these treatment modalities require lots of expensive equipment and technology, and the patient bears those costs. I'm not anti-implant, but unfortunately, implant treatments are often portrayed as the first resort rather than the last. Frequently, there are simpler, more cost-effective solutions to the problem – not to mention that the fees for one implant can often go a long way to stabilising the patient's whole mouth!

Direct Resin Veneers have a multitude of uses –they can be used to improve function, enhance the colour and shape of teeth, modify tooth position as well as in this case, restore teeth that have su ered trauma. Direct Resin Veneers can do this without cutting teeth – all in one visit.

Direct Resin Build-ups – All in ONE day! What if you have su ered with erosion... you have already lost much of your tooth structure – the last thing you need is your teeth being CUT AWAY EVEN MORE for crowns. Direct Resin Build-ups are a NO CUT, one day alternative that saves the remaining tooth structure and enhances the cosmetics and function of your teeth. They often require modifications to your bite to accomodate your new smile. 8am–5pm; Fri

"Growing up as a child, we saw Mum work two and three jobs. It was a hard life that meant that I had to look after my little brother at night whilst Mum worked. I was not afforded a childhood like other kids. We saw things happen to Mum that no child should see happen," said Todd.

"This is one reason our main focus has always been families affected by domestic and family violence, and this will always be very important."Theimportance of Todd's mother was brought to the fore in 2021 when the Toy and Gift Drive was renamed the Susan Roskell Toy and Gift Drive in her honour after she lost her battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

The idea for the annual Toy and Gift Drive came about in 2016 after Mr Sheldon, his wife Penny, son Lachlan and other close family members donated wrapped gifts to the local Reading Cinemas Maitland Wishing Tree appeal to support struggling families during the festive season."From there, the annual Toy and Gift Drive was born, with the aim of engaging friends and family and the wider community to support us, and in turn, we support community organisations," said Todd.

"The organisations supply us with a basic list including estimated age ranges and gift requirements for parents. We don't find out names; we don't know anything about the recipients from the lists we are given from various charitable organisations," said Todd.

Local Newcastle father Todd Sheldon has made it his mission to give disadvantaged children a reason to smile, launching the seventh annual Susan Roskell Toy and Gift Drive. A community initiative, the drive was established to provide gifts and toys to children, their parents and carers impacted by the effects of domestic and family violence, homelessness, illness and injury.

It is no surprise that Mr Sheldon is focused on helping those in need, having faced many hardships during his childhood.

The donated toys and gifts are provided to local charities and organisations such as The Backpack Venture, Got Your Back Sister, Early Links, Maitland Neighbourhood Centre, Carrie's Place, Jenny's Place and The Farmer's Run.

Local Kids Through Tough Times L-R:

The reason that thought scares me is that I now know with certainty that the decisions I make today for the kid are shaping her life. Changing who she will become and whom she will have beside her when life has its inevitable ups and downs. That seems like a lot of responsibility for someone who lost her keys twice last week and accidentally tried to open the wrong vehicle when returning from the shop. In my defence, they were the same make and colour. Sadly, it was the cleanliness of the car that finally gave it away. If there was an exam you needed to take to ensure you are equipt for this enormous responsibility, I'm not sure I'd pass.

Honeysuckle's much anticipated harbourside promenade near Cottage Creek is now open, giving the community and visitors 11km of uninterrupted pathways alongside Newcastle's stunning coastline, stretching from Wickham to Merewether Beach.

one little thing can change everything. If I hadn't grown up with my mum, maybe I would never have known I was strong enough to raise a child alone. I knew it would be hard, but I also understood that one parent who really loves you is more than a lot of people get. I watched her all my life do a job she was passionate about. Without that, I might not have known how important that was, and my career might never have become a reality. With few exceptions, all the people I love and who love me, I met because of my job.

44 Life is full of choices. When you are a kid, you are kind of along for the ride. Still, the decisions that are made for you can change everything. When I was 11, my mum had to move from one town to another for work. I loved where we lived, and I didn't want to go. Starting a new high school halfway through year 7 when everyone else felt settled and connected wasn't fun. Thirty-six years on, three of the girls I met that week remain in my life. They are my chosen family, and I have no idea what I would do without them. We have come in and out of each other's lives, but the bond remains intact. We have all had families, known more than our share of love and loss, and even occasionally disagreed. But my life without them would be unrecognisable. Thanks to them, I have this whole village of people around me to help look out for my kid and believe me, it takes a village. I can give the kid advice about a situation for months, and she won't take it. If one of her Aunts says the same thing word for word, it's suddenly the best advice anyone has ever given. I could be annoyed that she didn't listen to me, but I'm so thankful. Grateful that she knows how loved she is by those who aren't required to but choose to love her. We are now affecting the lives of the next generation because 36 years ago, my mum changed jobs. That thought warms my heart and scares the life out of me all at the same time. How

One thing I do know is that I will always try. I will always make the best decision I can at the time. I will always be selective about the people in her life because they are the people she is watching when deciding how to become a fully formed human. As adults, we need to take responsibility for our choices. Nothing is more annoying than watching a grown adult revert to victim mode. The downside of being a grown-up is that you are responsible for your choices. But it's also an empowering thing. You have the power to make better choices for yourself and for your kid. Sometimes you have to look into the darkness and leap, but don't waste that amazing opportunity to help them be extraordinary humans who make great choices of their own. On Tour With the Kid TISSUE

COUNCIL GIVES ITS SUPPORT TO SUPERCARS

45 Community News WHAT'S HAPPENING IN YOUR COMMUNITY?LOCAL NEWCASTLE EXPANSION PROJECT MOVES UNDERGROUND AT NEWCASTLE ART GALLERY

The event would be held in Newcastle on 10-12 March 2023 as the season-opening race, although its staging is still subject to approval from State Government agencies, including the Heritage Council of NSW, NSW Office of Sport and Destination NSW.

Supercars Australia is awaiting the outcome of its application under Section 60 (S60) of the Heritage Act 1977 to facilitate holding the last Newcastle 500 event under the existing agreement, as the existing S60 for the Camp Shortland area expired in April 2022. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said Council's support of the March 2023 date ensures clarity for local businesses and residents. Newcastle could continue as one of Supercars' premier events, delivering massive promotion for the city and region while avoiding the previous impact to east-end businesses in November and December when Christmas endof-year trading was occurring.

"Clarifying these new dates in March provides a good alternative to the previous season-closing events in terms of maximising the potential of the event from an economic perspective while also minimising disruption to the community and business operators," Cr Nelmes said.

The Newcastle 500 could return to the city's streets in March next year after councillors voted to support new dates for the final event to be held under the existing agreement between Supercars Australia and City of Newcastle.

The project includes a new café and retail shop, multi-purpose and educational program space, a secure international standard loading dock, and will extend the building's footprint east along Darby Street and Queen Street.

"We have been waiting more than 16 years to see this expansion come to fruition, so it is exciting to see this significant step being taken, paving the way for the main construction work to begin next year.

"Local tourism and accommodation providers that have been heavily impacted by COVID-19 will be looking forward to benefiting from the economic stimulus provided by the Newcastle 500's likely return in March next year."

LAKE MACQUARIE FERNLEIGH AWABAKAL SHARED TRACK

Early construction works that will pave the way for a $40 million expansion have kicked off at Newcastle Art Gallery. Fencing has been erected, and a specialist drill rig has been installed on-site to begin the process of remediating abandoned mine workings underneath the Art Gallery.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the remediation was a crucial step to ensure the safety of the site ahead of the main expansion works, which are expected to begin in mid2023. Shortlisted applicants from the expression of interest process will be invited to tender for the main construction works later this year.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said the southern section included a 3m-wide shared path, three upgraded bus stops with new shelters and associated landscaping, fencing and"Thisdrainage.isthe first stage in a project that will create a 27km continuous active transport route from Adamstown to Murrays Beach. "The most recent economic assessment report by Ernst and Young found that on average, the Newcastle 500 delivered $36.2 million annually in total economic impact, which when compared with the $1.6 million cost of Council supporting the race, equates to $22.60 being returned to the local economy for every $1 council invested in the race.

Newcastle Art Gallery's $40 million expansion project will deliver an additional 1,600 square metres of exhibition space with dedicated areas for the Gallery's significant collection on the lower level, while the upper level will cater for a variety of temporary exhibitions, showcasing local, national and international artists.

"By doubling the size of the Gallery, significantly increasing the exhibition space and delivering a suite of modern facilities, this project will deliver an expanded and upgraded Gallery of international standing that will offer a valuable cultural tourism opportunity for Newcastle and the Hunter."

SMART BINS SET TO SQUEEZE WASTE IN LAKE MAC Solar-powered bins that internally crush rubbish to store five times the amount of waste as a regular bin are being installed in Lake Macquarie.LakeMacquarie City Council Waste Strategy Coordinator Hal Dobbins said the RAY Smart Solar Powered Compacting Bins, which are for general waste, would be a game changer when it came to beautifying areas and improving the environment."Notonlywill this be able to store more waste with a smaller footprint, but having a strong sealed hatch as a lid ensures no items will blow out into the lake," Mr Dobbins said. While a standard bin would hold 240 litres of waste, these can hold up to 1200 litres – the equivalent of filling more than six bathtubs.

Cessnock City Council has teamed up with Singleton Council to develop the first ever Hunter Valley Monopoly Board Game.

"Another device will be installed at Toronto Foreshore in the coming months to reduce litter in the area, which has recently become popular since the installation of a new town green and picnic area."

FRI 23 SEPT – SUN 2 OCT ▲ Chalk The Walk | 23 September to 2 October. The Fernleigh Awabakal Shared Track (FAST), which will eventually stretch from the end of the Fernleigh Track to Blacksmiths, is jointly funded by Council and the NSW Government through the NSW Government's Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund.

"Smart sensors placed inside the bin alert Council when the bin is around 80 per cent full, so crews will know when to empty it. The bins also lock when they're full, so there's no chance of them overflowing. " Mr Dobbins said. Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said the first smart solar bin would be installed along the esplanade at Warners Bay Foreshore.

“Lawns are a real luxury these days and are especially appreciated after Covid,” says Jason. “In Spring, your lawn starts to grow, so you want to ensure that any dead patches are repaired and your lawn is weed-free.”

With Bill's passing in 2013, his legacy was passed down to his second-youngest son Craig, who had been part of the business since he was a boy. Craig has also been responsible for relocating the company from its original Carrington premises to the current Cardiff location.Nowadays, Craig is joined in the business by wife Zdenka and a team of professionals who can offer customers a wealth of experience and knowledge. Some staff have been working in the company for over 20 years. "The business is so entrenched in family that in addition to Craig's leadership, three out of his four brothers have been involved in the business at one stage or another before moving on to other careers," said Zdenka. "Our team has pride in their work, and we're a family. We locally manufacture the popular Ziptrak Blinds and most of our other outdoor blinds and awnings that we have on offer. We cater for commercial and domestic requirements."Windsor'ssuccess can largely be attributed to Craig and Zdenka's dedication to customer service. With an offering that combines highquality products, value for money and above all, personal service, they continue to maintain 100% satisfaction for their customers.

Windsor uses only the best standard of componentry and materials, specifically designed for the Australian Environment. This ensures a long-lasting, quality product backed by the Windsor Warranty. Preparing Your Garden for

54

For over 75 years, local manufacturer Windsor Blinds Awnings and Shutters has been at the forefront of design and technology. Established by Mr B.J Young (Bill) after he returned from World War II in 1946, Windsor quickly became nationally accepted as the leader in the blind industry, a position it still retains – recognised as being in the 'Top 10' of its field in Australia.

A new season has arrived. With longer and warmer days, Spring is the perfect time to get out and garden. It’s also the season when your backyard comes to life as flowers begin to bloom and we start preparing for outdoor entertaining. However, with so much to do, it can be hard to stay on top of everything. This month, Landscape Gardening expert Jason Hodges shares his top tips to help get your garden Spring ready.

SPRING • HUNTER HOMES & LIFESTYLE READREADONLINEONLINE

Before the growing season starts, your garden will appreciate a good spray of fertiliser as plants need feeding as they grow. In early Spring, prepare your lawn by aerating your lawn with a garden fork, patching up bare areas with seeds and using weed killers to remove any weeds. After a few weeks, begin feeding the lawn with a fertiliser such as Charlie Carp’s All Purpose Fertiliser Spray Pack (2.2L RRP $15.00) to help stimulate the grass’ growth and improve soil quality.

When we think about Spring, the first thing that comes to mind is flowers. “As the soil moisture is still high and the weather is not too hot, it is the perfect time to begin planting. Consider planting annuals and perennials in your garden for that extra pop of colour,” says Jason. Fill your flower bed and pots with a variety of petunias, alyssum, California poppies, asters, pansies, and African daisies. Add fertiliser pellets to your garden beds and pots to strengthen soil structure, improve earthworm activity and help retain moisture. A fertiliser like the Charlie Carp All Purpose Fertiliser Pellets (5 kg RRP $24.60) is a great Anotheroption.excellent mid-to-late Spring task is mulching, as this is when the soil is warming up from the colder temperatures of Winter and should be dry. Mulching too early in the season will result in the cold moisture remaining trapped, which can delay the growth of plants – so get the timing right. All Charlie Carp Products are available at Bunnings Warehouse nationwide. For more information, visit www.charliecarp.com.au
