AN INTERVIEW WITH
JORDAN DAYKIN
You’ve always had a keen interest in business. Who was your biggest influence as you were growing up? When growing up I always used to watch Dragons’ Den, so I would definitely say the Dragons were a big influence. However, both my Grandad and Dad ran business and they were the ones I looked up to. What was your first ever business and did you have any fears about setting it up? My first ever business was called RS2 Service. When I was 12, I loved to play computer games and after spending most of my pocket money on the virtual game ‘gold’, I found a cunning way of making a little extra money. I ended up contacting the suppliers of the virtual gold and bought bulk deals and would then sell it on in the game to other players. I created a simple website by watching YouTube. The Chinese company that I was buying bulk from, came to me with an intriguing offer and I sold the company for £10,000. hy did you decide to apply to go on Dragon’s W Den and what was the experience like? I didn’t plan to get on the show. After watching it for so many years, I thought I would fill in the application and then never hear back, so when I received the initial call, I was in shock! The experience was one of a kind and really serial, it helped get GripIt to where it is today. I was so nervous going on but I knew I had to. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity. How has Deborah Meaden’s expertise and guidance helped you? Deborah has been a great sounding board. If I ever have any questions or am unsure, I can just go to her and she would point me in the right direction without telling me this is what you need to do. I can then go on to make the right decision.
ripIt is obviously extremely successful – G what are the challenges you’ve faced and how have these changed as the company has grown and evolved? I would definitely say there have been two main challenges within GripIt. Frist, finding the right staff, although now we have a fairly young and great team, we have really struggled in the past finding the correct people for the correct roles. Also knowing what roles are necessary within the business and which roles weren’t needed as much. The second challenge was changing the consumers mind from using the fixings they were so use to and loved to GripIt. However, with a little bit of persistence and lots of trade mornings we sure have changed their minds! o you have any advice for young and D aspiring entrepreneurs? Never give up and keep doing what you’re doing! If you hit a stumbling block, just get back an carry on in that direction! ow important do you think networking H is for business and what would you say to those businesses who don’t invest their time? I think networking is great for businesses, even if you don’t meet people who will buy your product or service. They may be able to help your business in other areas such as saving you money in a product/ service you use really often. When networking you meet some very influential and successful liked minded people, it’s great to hear their stories about business too. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time and how do you relax? I love spending time with my little girl and Laura! We love to do things as a family. Seeing Amelie grow is amazing and just shows how quick time passes us by!
