PHIL BENNETT OBE Welsh Rugby Legend
Phil Bennett was a rugby player whose talents defied definition – a mercurial mix of the impressive, the unexpected and the superhuman! Phil grew up in the small village of Felinfoel, in the rugby mad town of Llanelli and his exceptional sporting talent was clear for all to see from a very early age. He gained three Wales School Boy caps and three Wales Youth Caps, before joining his beloved Llanelli RFC. He went on to captain Llanelli RFC, Wales, The British and Irish Lions and the Barbarians.
He made his international debut in March 1969 against France in Paris at the age of just 20. Phil played in the centre, on the wing and at full back for Wales before settling into the famous Welsh number 10 jersey in 1972 to become a true world-class fly-half. Outstanding performances at international level earned Phil a place on the famous invincible British Lions tour of South Africa in 1974. Phil’s starring role, which included a record 103 points, helped the Lions return home undefeated – a feat never achieved before or since.

RHIAN MANNINGS Founder and Chief Executive of 2 Wish Upon A Star
In February 2012, Rhian Mannings had just returned to work as a P.E. teacher after having her youngest son, George, when tragedy struck her family. George died suddenly with no sign of illness in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant on the 22nd February. Just days later, Paul, her husband and the daddy to her three children, took his own life traumatised by the loss of their son. The tragedy of experiencing the sudden death of a child was compounded by the situation Rhian and her husband found themselves in at the hospital, having

Co-Founder and Director of Boss Brewing
Sarah John is a multi-award-winning entrepreneur and the Co-Founder and Director of Boss Brewing, one of Wales’ fastest growing microbreweries. Sarah’s brewing company is one of the few female owned breweries in the country and in just four years, is already in the top 30% of microbreweries in the UK in terms of turnover – she is rising to the top not just in a crowded industry, but also in a male-dominated one. Sarah’s company already has national listings with some of the largest pub companies in the UK including JD Wetherspoon, Mitchells and Butlers and Stonegate. She exports her beers world-over to parts of Europe, North America and Asia.
TIME: 3.00pm
Sarah is exceptionally driven, ambitious and determined and her hunger means that she can count four major retailers (Asda, Tesco, Co-op and Morrisons) among her customers – one of the youngest breweries ever to achieve national retailer listings. This all-round commercial success meant that her brewery picked up the coveted ‘Commercial Achievement’ gong at the SIBA business awards this year, beating off competition from the 2000 other breweries in the UK at what is recognised in the industry as the single most reputable business awards in the calendar.

To date, the charity has raised over £1,500,000 exclusively from small public donations and local fundraising, and 2 Wish Upon A Star is now an all-Wales organisation, helping hundreds of families every year who experience sudden and traumatic loss.

TIME: 12.30pm
In June 2019, Simon launched a new business called CBD Performance. Early on in Simon’s career, he had always struggled with the physical demands of professional football. The aches, pains, irregular sleep patterns, and always experiencing problems with his joints, in particular hips, were taking their toll. Year on year it was becoming harder to remain at the high levels and play without restriction. One thing he did come across towards the end of his career was CBD oil, something he now wishes he found much earlier.

AN INTERVIEW WITH
PHIL BENNETT OBE ow old were you when you first started H playing rugby and where did your interest stem from? When I was growing up, there was no organised rugby - we didn’t have any fields to play in so we played in the school yard. There were no rules, we played 20-a-side and you’d tend to stay out of the way otherwise you’d be flattened in the yard! I went to my first modern secondary school at 11 and this was my first real taste of organised rugby. I knew the rules because I’d go and watch the Scarlets play and I was very lucky that I had a great PE teacher who took me under his wing and it went from there. Did you have a role model and why? To be honest, there were so many fine Scarlets players in that time, all internationals. Terry Davies who was a full-back was a hero of mine, Carwyn James and Ken Jones who was a magnificent runner and someone I thought the world of. At the end of his career, Ken was playing for Cardiff as I was starting out with the Scarlets and so I played against him, which was a dream come true. Another man I really thought the world of, was a man from Felinfoel who was called Ray Williams who played on the wing for the Scarlets. He taught at Cwm Gwendraeth School and he brought through players like Barry John, Gareth Davies and many other Welsh internationals. So yes, I had a number of role models growing up.
12
id you always want to represent your D country and did you ever envisage that you’d play for Wales? I left school at 15 to go and work – my father had sustained an injury and so I had to bring in the money. I joined the youth team at Felinfoel and loved every minute. As time went on, I started thinking to myself, “I’m 18 now, what’s my next step going to be?” And I was lucky because I was offered to play football for Swansea so I had a tough decision to make – it had to be one or the other. I was coming out of youth and going to play against men. I had an invitation from Llanelli Rugby Football Club to come and do pre-season training – well, I was absolutely thrilled! Three years later, I was playing for Wales which happened so fast! So, no, I never thought I’d play for Wales but I’m thrilled and honoured to have done so. Can you describe the feeling of walking on to the pitch in front of a Welsh crowd? I can remember the singing of the Welsh supporters and as we walked out, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. You definitely get an overwhelming sense that a win is so important and that you can’t let these people down. They’d travel from everywhere, from West Wales, Neath and Swansea. The crowd were so important to us and it almost seemed like an extra man was playing on the field with us which was a fantastic feeling to have. The crowd could always sense when we needed a lift and there have been times where they’ve really helped us to win competitions such as the Grand Slam.
Your passion for the Scarlets and Llanelli is amazing. Was there ever a time where you were swayed to leave the Club? You have to make certain decisions in life and this was true when I was playing for the Scarlets as a young lad. There were two or three occasions where people were asking me to play for them. When I was 18 and living at home with my mother, three men travelled down from Halifax to offer me a place on their team and a considerable amount of money. Initially, I thought about my future with Pat and the financial security for my parents, but for my father, the thought of leaving Llanelli was heart-breaking. The men needed an immediate answer and so I decided to turn it down. I was fortunate enough to have plenty of offers throughout my career, including two offers from South Africa but I truly loved West Wales and being close to our families. To this day, I’ve never regretted my decision to stay and although others have moved to Las Vegas and beyond, I’ve always stayed local, happy and surrounded by family. The sport has changed considerably over the years. Do you empathise with today’s players with the ever-changing rules and the media surrounding them? As President of the Scarlets and Felinfoel, I see firsthand how much pressure the players are under. I look at the players today and it’s a completely different world from when I was playing rugby. You’re now talking about huge financial rewards, they’re training vigorously and they come into work now – when I was playing, I was only in on a Monday and Wednesday to train. Today, players train every day, their diets are analysed, they’re weight training and their stats measured. It’s a physically bruising industry to be in. I n terms of the game, there are certain elements that I don’t agree with, such as when they’re all in a pile and somebody comes in and hits somebody else, and drives him back two yards. I just hope there’s not a serious injury because it may have an impact on young children who are keen to play rugby.
In terms of the media, the press want interviews, they watch social media feeds and the spotlight is constantly on them. It’s so much harder to keep a low profile and to keep things relatively private. The sport is now a business and so I do empathise with today’s players when it comes to the scrutiny they face. What are your thoughts on this year’s upcoming World Cup? I think this year’s World Cup is going to be the most exciting one for a long time and I think we are in with a chance. New Zealand are not a team that frighten any more and instead we have strong England and Irish teams. I think there are three or four genuine teams who have a chance in this World Cup and I think that Wales are strong contenders. How important do you think building trust and relationships is in rugby? Trust is the one thing that hasn’t changed within the sport and if I look back at my career, you have to have the utmost trust in the players playing outside and inside of you. When you walk out on to any pitch, you walk out as a team with an overwhelming sense of being all for one. I encourage all the Scarlets players, especially the reserves on a match day to go and sit on a table with sponsors, businesses and guests to network and talk to people who work in different in industries, from banking and finance to property and the media. Some of the lads are so shy when they have to go in front of decision makers, managing directors and the public because they haven’t been exposed to it all before. So yes, it’s important to stick together and in this modern day of rugby, you have to have your friends to call on. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I’m a big family man and I’m lucky that I have two great sons. My eldest has two children and I absolutely love them. I try to spend as much time as possible with my grandchildren and Pat and I are invited away and abroad regularly. Really, we’re homebirds and we enjoy travelling locally to places such as the Cotswolds, Chester and North Wales.
