EDITOR'S LETTER
2012 the move upYear is
According to the Canadian Government, interest rates are expected to remain low into 2014 and population growth and immigration are major factors expected to prop-up housing demand in 2012 and the near future. By 2031 over 42 million people are expected to call Canada home. Mathieu Laberge, Deputy Chief Economist for The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) says, "With the Canadian economy set to expand at a moderate pace and mortgage rates expected to remain low, activity levels in 2012 in both new home construction and sales of existing homes will stay close to levels in 2011." Our own results from the first quarter of 2012 indicate that buyers have regained their confidence in the local housing market expecially in the upper end luxury homes. We have seen activity in the $2 million plus segment increase significantly over 2011 and $5 million plus homes are selling. These early results, combined with a noticibly increase in buyer activity have us extrememly excited about 2012, and feeling it may develop into one of the best years ever in Canadian Real Estate. 2012 is definitely the year to buy up to a larger home.

Letting a Little Spring Into Your Home:
Diversity and ecological awareness are certainly informing this season’s trends.
The snowdrops are peeking through the ground and the air’s a little warmer: As the old adage goes, “spring has sprung”—or it’s about to—and with it, a common desire to embrace all that’s new. Spring’s call for renewal is felt keenly in the home. A recent visit with Marnie Warman—home décor specialist and the owner and founder of Interior Design House, with locations in Burlington and Oakville— uncovered some great strategies for freshening the look and feel of your home this spring. The season’s “it colour” is typically the first question on style-savvy clients’ minds. This year, however, interior decorators have an unexpected answer: In terms of colour choice, 2012 offers a diverse palette. An increasing trend towards eclecticism is allowing for the easy alignment of personal preferences with cutting-edge style. In Warman’s words, “this season calls for a celebration of colour, and there’s something for everyone. You have your ‘green people,’ your ‘blue people’ and your ‘orange people,’ etcetera, and right now, all of them can be

If you’re one of the abovementioned “orange people,” for example, use this colour to accent more broadly used neutrals like cream, white, or gray. And, be sure to stick to a common theme in a room. Unrestrained colour blending can have a jarring effect—and this is the interior

From turquoise, sea foam, robin’s egg and teal to navy, high-end decorators are seeing a surge of demand for this fresh and cleansing colour. Your redecorating choices should bring you lasting satisfaction, and the sense of having made a good investment for your home. On this front, specialists recommend you purchase “big ticket,” or mainstay, items in neutral colours and classic designs. Buying sofas and settees in colours and patterns you won’t tire of will help you avoid expensive mistakes. Accessories or accent pieces, on the other hand, tend to be more affordable and relatively easy to replace when a new look is desired. These items can be purchased in current colour and print trends, as they keep a room up-to-date and fashionable without the stress, expense and wastefulness of righting earlier “big-ticket” faux pas. Taking time to consider your lifestyle will also help you avoid regrettable choices. Do you have two young kids, another on the way, and pets? Or, are you a young, professional couple that likes to entertain? For families with young children, durable, hard-to-soil materials and finishes are best. Shabbychic (or “distressed”) furniture and colourful cottons are perfect solutions for more rambunctious households. Ultra-modern, or “George Jetson,” style, on the other hand, works well for a more formal existence: Clean lines, a concentrated use of whites and stunning “glass ball” accessories suit lifestyles in which breakage, stain and wear-and-tear aren’t constants of daily life. For those who want an update without the stress, cost, or commitment of complete redecoration, the “transitional look” is a great solution. By adding

When we hear the term “summer home,” our imaginations conjure places of refuge, relaxation and fun. The reality is though, that traffic, rising gas prices and sheer distance are turning would-be cottagers away from this former getaway of choice. Many people are selling their summer homes and looking for options closer to home. And, to where are they turning? In many cases, their own backyards. Yes, the vacation is being replaced by the “staycation” and, to this end, homeowners are seeking increasingly innovative ways of turning their properties into personal utopias.
International Landscaping
Baldo and Santo Gucciardi, brothers and recognized leaders in the green industry, are directly involved with this revolution. Twenty-six years ago, they founded International Landscaping Inc. Based in Oakville, Ontario, and comprised of an internationally awarded team of horticultural and landscape design experts, International Landscaping is transforming formerly pedestrian properties into the places of amusement and repose summer homes once were.

“Staycation Revolution” By Nicolette Little

Transforming your backyard into an oasis of summer pleasure.
By extending a home’s typical living space into the surrounding landscape, International’s design team is turning backyards into centres for elegant entertaining. Summer is the time of year people come together to enjoy the warm weather, as well as each other’s companionship. In recent projects, International Landscaping has realized clients’ dreams of having full outside kitchens. Backyard areas with barbecues, ovens and bars allow the lucky chef to enjoy fresh air and uninterrupted conversation—all while cooking for company! Stylish pavilions and patios also offer spots for dining, after dinner drinks, or dancing. Let’s add a soundtrack to the already idealized image of banqueting outside: Outdoor sound systems, as well as mood lighting and lush plantings, enhance the experience of outdoor socializing and set a property to awe-inspiring advantage. Incorporating fire elements into outdoor entertainment scenarios adds further ambiance. Fire has always drawn people together. In ancient times, it was a source of heat and safety, and a central hub around which gossip and stories were shared. In our modern era, the sense of warmth and connection a fire creates is no different, and International is often asked to build fire features into their designs. Fire bowls, for example, reflect dramatically on nearby structures, add warmth to any outdoor space and extend the entertaining period well into the fall months. The idea of eschewing traditional office walls for an airy, birdsong-infused workspace is also a welcome one. International Landscaping’s outdoor “rooms” accommodate computers, high-speed Internet, phones, fax machines and more. With remote control activated sound systems and televisions, you can also listen to classical music, or catch the latest stock exchange quotes, while making your morning calls.
Summer is the time of year people come together
Moving workspaces out of doors is undoubtedly an increasing trend. First and foremost, however, people want their backyard to be a mecca of relaxation. Water has always had a soothing effect on mankind—both in the sound it makes as it rushes by and the fresh feeling it leaves on our skin. Now, water can be incorporated in landscapes in a variety of sophisticated ways. In fact, International is a multiple recipient of the Global AquaTekture Visionary Award (GAVA) for water environments, and they are increasingly asked to include waterscapes in their designs. Recent and lauded projects, or example, contain a variety of water features, ranging from pools and hot tubs of all sizes, shapes and designs to waterfalls. For a traditional or “untouched” look, rocks, boulders, foliage and plantings can be combined to create natural-looking waterfalls and streams. In more contemporary designs, water walls, sheer descents and negative edge pools use clean lines and contrasting materials

First and foremost, however, people want their backyard to be a mecca of relaxation. for an eye-catching look. Fountains are another popular feature in any backyard Eden. There’s nothing quite like gazing through your bay window at an impressive cascade, or rounding the bend of a winding stone path, only to stumble upon a soothing water feature. In fact, winding pathways of stone, pebble or brick contribute significantly to the creation of a backyard paradise. They allow homeowners to step away from a bustling home, appreciate their property from different perspectives and access a special place of private repose— for example, a lakefront or garden view, or strategically located pavilion. A variety of materials like sandstone, granite, classic brick and exotic woods can be used to complement and enhance surrounding land, water and hardscapes. International’s creative team—an industry pacesetter in the architecture of personal bliss—offers one further suggestion for an optimally peaceful setting: “Well placed privacy screens, walls, or curtains can block undesirable views, and create a more intimate outdoor space.” As the desire to invest in an enjoyable backyard grows, so too does the number of awards lining International Landscaping’s walls. What is the secret to their success? According to the founders, the company’s reputation rests on several important points: First, the company is a "full service provider.” Indeed, International Landscaping’s stateof-
...the creation of a backyard paradise. the-art facilities and professional staff have the tools and skills to provide the full range of landscape services, from design and quality construction, to all-season property maintenance. Seamless project management is their forte. Many clients are looking for one stop shopping in their landscapers. Giving the client the peace of mind that all details are being looked after— from pool installation, irrigation and lighting, to plant material selection and the laying of utility lines—is a major part of what International provides. Staying in close touch with clients and listening carefully to their ideas is also a big part of the company’s customer-focused approach. Full colour computer renderings and 3D design models further International’s ability to convey design ideas to clients and keep them updated as to work in progress. Staying on the frontline of style, maintaining the highest quality at all times and respecting the environment are also important facets of the company. Regular visits to Europe, the U.S. and Asia allow them to stay abreast of emerging industry trends in design, materials, processing and implementation. But, as high-tech or stylish as some ideas might be, International emphasizes that, ultimately, “it’s not about getting a job done, but getting it done right. Just because something’s convenient and inexpensive doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do. Over 26 years’ experience has given us the confidence to design and build landscapes that work.” And, the team’s designs and landscape creations do more than just “work.” Satisfied clients abound; they’ve been spreading the good word; and International Landscaping is becoming a household—or backyard—name, synonymous with “excellence” amongst Southern Ontario’s high-end staycation crowd. ◊ Nicolette Little is a freelance writer. “Spring being a tough act to follow, God created June.” - L. Bernstein
"Helping You Help Others"
“For behold the winter has passed, the rain is over and gone. The flowers have already appeared in the land. The time has arrived for pruning the vines.” - Song of Solomon With Spring upon us and new opportunities ahead, we look forward to being a breath of fresh air in the world of financial advice for those who have been blessed with significant amounts of capital and wish to help make this world a better place than they found it. “But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully”. - 2 Cor 9:6 We believe that our "raison d’etre" at Bruce Etherington & Associates is to “help others help others” and thus make a significant difference in their lives by implementing time tested financial principals which are designed to both preserve capital and enhance the family harmony and philanthropic efforts of our clients.
We are privileged to be able to advertise in the spring issue of the Invidiata Magazine and would welcome inquiries from readers who wish to diversify their financial portfolios beyond real estate, which by the way, Christopher Invidiata and his team are more than capable of helping you with. If "bear market proofing" your capital, enhancing your yield and eliminating tax is of interest to you, in accordance with time tested financial principles, then please call us at 905-270-3126. We look forward to hearing from you and enjoying in common the coming of spring as the vines in blossom give forth their fragrance.

“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” -HENRY FORD

For decades Christopher has been a leader in the community to give back as he believes “we are blessed to be a blessing.” Christopher has been a consistent supporter of many charities including, but not limited to, Sick Kids Hospital, Children Miracle Network, Circle of Care, Run For Life, Dreams Take Flight, The Fight Against Breast Cancer, and The Red Cross. As they celebrate their 30th Anniversary this year, the Company credits its success to their team and strong core values. “People are at the heart of any company’s ability to succeed, people who share the same values and purpose,” says Lawrie. “Our shared core values of honesty, integrity, excellence and leadership guide us in everything that we do for our clients.” Over 10,000 individuals, families and companies depend on their services and expertise. “Our team has grown from the original five to over 85 professionals who know insurance and excel at customer service,” says Lawrie. “We will continue to anticipate our client’s needs in all areas of insurance and financial services and look forward to providing our clients and community even greater service in the next thirty years. One of the areas that DLIB consistently exceed client expectations is within their dedicated VIP Service Department. Established to meet the needs of high net worth individuals and active business owners, their attention to detail and pro-active approach is the foundation 96
of high client satisfaction. “We take a pro-active approach and take care of all the details so clients can sleep at night. And ensuring an expedited claim settlement is what we do best so clients can get back to life as it was before the loss”
Providing insurance solutions for high valued homes, automobiles and all that go with these types of assets require a high level of knowledge and expertise. “One of the most common areas of insurancce we consistently discuss with new and existing clients is liability protection. Most of our VIP clients carry $5m to $10m in liability protection and we often recommend higher limits. For clients who have US vacation properties, the exposure is even greater. Coverage while working with a not-for-profit Board of Directors can often be covered at no cost and an area we consistently review with clients.” It’s this type of pro-active service and advice that consistently earns DLIB high marks and exceptional client retention results.
