AN EYE FOR the LENS

Wildlife photographer Caleb Invidiata is accustomed to the interesting scenes Mother Nature has to offer. When he and his family, Oakville’s well-known Invidiata clan, traveled to South Africa last August, however, he was exposed to nature’s sublime beauty in ways neither he nor his prolific lens had been before. This tour proved to be the adventure of a lifetime, as well as fodder for an incredible photography exhibit at Oakville’s Touch de L’Afrique store and attendant Afro Café. Only two days into the trip, Caleb recognized he’d made a mistake: The 60 gigabytes of camera memory he’d packed (which usually provides ample digital storage space for a professional photographer) simply wouldn’t suffice to capture and convey South Africa’s majesty, or, as this capable photographer put it: “nature at its finest.” This realization sent Caleb scrambling around Cape Town for a camera store (which he found!) to purchase extra memory cards. And, thank goodness he did. On the Go Touch Down excursion, the world’s sleekest, most exotic and even deadly animals were a frequent sight. Sitting over an “Africano” at the Afro Café, Caleb’s eyes glimmer as he recounts scenes that made his trip a life-altering one: “We saw a giraffe that had just been born, and was still attached to its mother through the umbilical cord. It must have been all of 45 minutes old.”

While a sight such as this evokes the significance of birth and life in the South African wild, others reveal the constant dance between predator and prey. The Invidiatas watched lions hunt amongst sandstonecoloured shrubs and grasslands. And, while in the eastern coast town of Hermanus, Caleb—an obvious animal aficionado—had the chance to swim with a creature his studies of the natural world have led him to feel is horrendously “misunderstood”: the Great White Shark. In a shark-proof steel cage and submerged in the Indian Ocean, Caleb came face to face with “Ugly Betty”—one of these sharp-toothed, fine-finned creatures that is a regular visitor in the area, and that the Hermanus locals familiarly, if not warmly, nicknamed. Caleb sums up his experiences in South Africa with the following words: “No National Geographic channel, no travel magazine can really give you this experience until you do it.” Petrus Engelbrecht, CEO of the Afro Café, Touch de L’Afrique store and Go Touch Down Travel & Tours, echoes Caleb’s sentiment. A South African himself, he knows this country provides an unrivalled stage for “nature in motion”—something relatively hard to find in our charming and quaint, but urbanized and contentedly benign town. 39


In addition to its topographical boons, Caleb emphasizes that South Africa provides a historical journey like no other. No visit to South Africa is complete without some exploration into the past of Nelson Mandela. This is accomplished through a tour of the infamous Robben Island prison, off the coast of Cape Town. A repressive apartheid regime threw Mandela, an activist against racial segregation, into prison for twenty-seven years. After his release in 1990, however, he became the first democratically elected President of the African National Congress. Being guided through the prison by former inmates, many of whom knew Mandela personally, was “jaw-dropping.” Caleb’s above-described explorations inspired over 6000 photographs. Of this number, thirty of the most vibrant, captivating, and at times shocking—all bearing Caleb’s landmark “black and white with splash of colour” style—became the mainstay of “Through the Lens of Caleb Invidiata,” a successful exhibit held at Touch de L’Afrique on December 6th. Revealing that South Africa’s appeal runs deeply amongst Oakville residents is the fact that over 100 people attended.

Concerned that you missed the chance to glimpse South Africa from afar? Never fear: Caleb’s photography is now a more-or-less permanent installation at Touch de L’Afrique. And, Engelbrecht is happy to have it there. When asked why, he notes that Canadians are fascinated by South Africa, and that any chance to educate others about the land he and his family once called home is a welcome thing. Caleb’s work is not only a testament to the phenomenal experiences to be had on Go Touch Down’s tours, but a repository of detail about this part of the world. To illustrate this latter point, Engelbrecht tells me: “The lion often hunts at night, so it needs to have incredible night vision. You can tell people that lions have a thin white line of fur beneath their eyes, which refracts moonlight into their pupils to help them see their prey. But, Caleb’s photography helps people actually see this.” Indeed, Caleb’s photography, the Touch de L’Afrique store—which contains a plethora of exquisite curios crafted in South Africa—and the trips offered by Go Touch Down Travel & Tours (which can be booked onsite, upstairs from Touch de L’Afrique) work together in a synergistic model of experience and education, of which booking a tour is the final, and most thrilling step.
