WICKLOW FILM FESTIVAL Mermaid Arts Centre is excited to reveal that the theme of the Wicklow Film Festival 2017 is ‘Social Justice’. Last year initiated by Brigid O’Brien and this year a collaboration between Mermaid and Outpost Studios, the Festival will include a curated programme of bold, socially-minded cinema from Ireland and around the world. In this, the second year of the Festival, we’ll be screening some daring deconstructions of gender inequality, racism, and poverty. Each film will be accompanied by engaging discussions with filmmakers, experts, and activists. The PURE Project continues to remove illegal dumping from the county of Wicklow and last year collected over 250 tonnes of illegally dumped rubbish, resulting in the removal of over 900 individual dumping sites with the office receiving over 1,000 reports. PURE works closely with, community groups and organisations, individuals, walking groups, cycling

groups, scout groups, and many more, in the extremely popular PURE Mile competition. The PURE Mile encourages communities and special interest groups to keep a mile stretch of road (approx. 1.6 km), and the immediate environment litter and rubbish free with over 150 miles of road involved in the competition this year. Many of these groups and communities are currently cleaning up their local areas and are extremely busy with regular litter picks, cleanups, and anti-dumping campaigns and initiatives, with hundreds of bags of rubbish being removed from the road sides. Anybody can get involved in the competition and PURE are calling on groups to

Ian Davis, Project Manager of PURE commented: “Illegal dumping does nothing for our environment, our communities, or our economy. Nobody wants to see rubbish dumped all over our county. We continue to remove illegal dumping on daily bases, but unfortunately, we have recently noticed and increase in large scale illegal dumping incidents, so we are again appealing to the public not to hand over their waste to unauthorised waste collectors, because if you do it will end up dumped in the uplands.” To combat the increase of dumping
