Wicklow Mountain Bike Festival

DATE: 3rd – 6th May 2024 |

LOCATION: Ballinastoe, Co. Wicklow

The Wicklow Mountain Bike Festival is 4 days of mountain bike action over the May bank holiday weekend featuring a Whip Off, Enduro, Cross Country and Downhill Events.

The festival kicks off on Friday afternoon with the spectacular ‘Whip Off’ event where Ireland’s most skilled rider will show off their tricks along a jump trail beside the festival village. Spectators are welcome and there’s a BBQ and awards presentation afterwards.

On Saturday the racing goes up a level with the ‘Enduro’ race which sees riders taking on every descent in Ballinastoe Woods. With 7 stages, over 30km and 1800 meters climbing it’s going to be a serious challenge for even the most experienced riders.

Sunday is ‘Cross Country’ day and time for Ireland’s fittest mountain bikers to tackle the Ballinastoe Trails with the opening round of the Irish XC National Points Series. Expect a savage course with punchy climbs and fast technical descents.

The Festival will comes to a finale with the ‘Downhill’ race on Sunday. Ireland’s bravest and most skilful riders will race against the clock on the 2km Ravens trail with race runs between 2pm and 5pm.

TY Coaching: Last year I had the pleasure of coaching TY Dominican College students over four weeks and it was a huge success. The students tried something new and they got really stuck in and had great fun. Because of the success of this I have the pleasure of coaching the class of TY 2024 this year!

Come and join the celebrations in the county Wicklow town as the event offers a diverse range of activities suitable for all ages and interests.

You can witness the colourful and energetic Bray Parade,

For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, there are informative talks and even yoga available, and unique face painting designs to choose from. Again, this year there will be a quiet zone also at the junction of Quinsborough Road and Seymour Road.

There is also a new wheelchairaccessible viewing area adjacent to the viewing stand. Places are limited and are on a first come first serve basis.

The Parade Grand Marshall this year is Bray’s ‘Person of the Year’ Dessie O’Toole. Dessie who is a former bus driver, has raised more than €1 million for local charities such as Living Life, St. Catherine’s Special School, and The Wicklow Hospice, among others. He has actively participated in fundraising and community work for over three decades.

The festival’s main event, the St. Patrick’s Day Bray Parade will kick off at 2 pm from the Town Hall to the viewing stand at the northern part of the Seafront.

Spring Specials

The St. Patrick’s Day festivities in Wicklow for 2024 promise a vibrant celebration across various towns, each with its unique parade route and starting times.

Arklow’s Parade will kick off promptly at 2:00 pm, traversing through the heart of the town along Main Street, culminating at the dedicated viewing stand located at Arklow’s Parade Ground.

Aughrim’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations will commence earlier, starting at 11:00 am from Tinakilly Bridge. The parade will wind its way towards the Pavillion & GAA Grounds, offering a picturesque journey through the town.

In Bray, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade will commence at 2:00 pm, starting its procession from the iconic Town Hall and concluding at the designated reviewing stand situated on Bray Seafront, providing spectators with a prime spot to enjoy the festivities.

Greystones’ Parade will set off from the Mill Road Roundabout at 11:00 am, embarking on a route that includes South Beach, Main Street, Church Road, the Old Cinema, and concluding at the Harbour Plaza, ensuring ample opportunity for all to revel in the celebration.

Rathdrum’s Parade Route will begin at Memorial Park at 12:00 pm, offering attendees the chance

to enjoy the spectacle from the viewing stand at Rathdrum’s Market Place.

Finally, Wicklow Town’s Parade will start from Station Road at 3:15 pm, meandering along Main Street before concluding at the historic Wicklow Gaol, providing a fitting end to the day’s festivities.

Each of these parades offers a unique experience, showcasing the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day while bringing communities together in celebration.

St Patrick’s Day Grand Marshall 2024

Ann Morrissey will lead the St Patrick’s Day Parade as Grand Marshalls 2024 in Wicklow Town.

Ann is the Daughter of Billy and Frances Morrissey, Knockanode, Avoca, Co. Wicklow. Ann lives with her Partner Larry Byrne on the outskirts of Wicklow Town. She works in Wicklow Town as an Auctioneer and Office Manager at CD Auctioneers.

Ann has been actively involved in organizing Events and Fundraising for many years. She started when she attended St. Marys College, in Arklow by organizing a Fun Run and Walk from Arklow to Avoca and back for Charity, and once running this event she caught the bug for organizing and never looked back. She also attributes her organizing skills and involvement in Events, to her Mother, who was actively involved as an SJAI Judge for Horse Jumping for over 60 years.

Ann went on to join Macra Na Feirme in Rathdrum and became Secretary for the Club for years and organized all the Club Events. She also went onto National Board to become Secretary. She also organized Rose of Tralee functions to pick the Wicklow Rose when it started first, and spent many years involved in Fundraising for building the Avondale Sports Complex, Rathdrum, by organizing Music Festival weekends with well know Bands, Fashion shows and much more. She was both Secretary and Chair of this Committee. One of the fundraising events for this Building was the election of ‘Lord Mayor’ and after the First ‘Lord Mayor’ (Michael Miley a well know Publican in Rathdrum), Ann was elected as ‘Lord Mayor’ the second year. She was also involved with Rathdrum Rugby Club, but after meeting her Partner Larry who played for Wicklow Rugby Club she was approached by the Wicklow President Liam Condon and the Committee to join them. She was nominated and became the first Women elected onto the previously Male dominated General Committee. This was back in the 80’s and she has served on the Committee and has worked tirelessly for the betterment of Wicklow Rugby Club ever since. She runs the Social Events, Auctions, Dinner Dance, and much more.

Speaking after been asked to be Grand Marshal by the Committee Ann said “I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the St. Patricks Day Parade Committee for choosing me for the Grand Marshal 2024, I am sure there are many more worthy recipients out there, but I am honoured to be chosen and look forward to leading the Parade with great pride”

The Glen Beach Cliff Walk

The Glen Turn Cliff Walk was officially reopened to the public again in July 2019, having been initially closed back in 2003.

The Grade 4 marked walk begins at Glen Beach at Wicklow Town and continues south to Lime Kiln Bay, on towards the lighthouse road before doubling back in a loop, with a total distance of 4 km.

‘The walk includes a wonderful variety of habitats including grassland, coastal heath, rock outcrops, and wet springs. Sightings of individual grey seas swimming among the rocky shore are common from the trail, while the very observant may be rewarded with glimpses of porpoise and dolphins further offshore.

‘The trail traverses a landscape of rich cultural interest. The main archaeological sites occur on the southern section of this walk. There is a rock shelter where prehistoric flints were found, the remains of a lime kiln, which gives the bay its name.

The opening of this cliff walk opens up yet another natural and recreational amenity to the people of Wicklow and giving the visitor another reason to visit and stay longer in Wicklow town.

The St Patricks Day Parade WT committee are delighted to announce that Eileen Whelan will be the MC at this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade. Eileen was the MC in 2022 and is thrilled to be back helping out this year. A resident of Wicklow Town, Eileen has worked with RTÉ since 1989. She started her journalism career in Wicklow’s WLCB before joining Q102 and then RTÉ. She has also worked as a reporter/ presenter with BBC and Sky News. Eileen presents the One o’clock News on RTÉ1 every day and regularly appears on the Six One and 9 o’clock bulletins.

this short walk takes in the route of the tree top walk from the forest floor below. Starting at the Walled Garden it is an easy route for all the family and is also buggy friendly.

THE RIVER WALK (5km – 1hr 45min – Strenuous) is the longest and most challenging walk at Avondale with some steep descents and climbs so strong footwear is recommended. However, the effort is rewarded with some magnificent river views and a view of Lovers Lookout from below.

THE RAILWAY WALK (2km –45min – Moderate)

this is a linear walk from Rathdrum railway station through the woods to Avondale House passing under

a viaduct on the way. It could have been taken by Parnell on his frequent journeys. Locals often take in a looped walk starting in Rathdrum and following the route of the Railway Walk returning from Avondale House by the footpath along the road back in Rathdrum.

TO THE CAIRN WALK (3km –1hr – Moderate)

along this walk you will pass through the remaining experimental plots of trees which were planted during the Great Tree Experiment in the early 20th century as well as a grove of mighty Sequoia (Giant Redwood) trees.

PLAYGROUND: The new playground is now located in the walled garden.

PICNIC SITE: There are picnic tables located throughout the Forest Park.

LOUGH TAY LOOP

This loop walk takes you around the stunning Lough Tay (also known as the Guinness Lake) in the Wicklow Mountains. The walk offers panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains, and it’s suitable for families with older children who are comfortable with a moderately challenging hike.

GLENDALOUGH

This is one of Wicklow’s most famous attractions, offering a variety of walking trails suitable for families. The Glendalough Upper Lake Loop is an easy trail that takes you around the picturesque Upper Lake, passing by historic sites such as St. Kevin’s Church and the Round Tower.

Isadora Epstein brings her singularly unconventional approach to this exhibition of new work commissioned by Mermaid Arts Centre, drawing on the mythology and history of the voyage of St Brendan from Ireland to North America.

The exhibition will turn the gallery into a fictional travel agency, bringing together paintings by Kathy Tynan, a set/ installation by Stéphane

Béna Hanly, costumes by Amie Egan and design by Stina Sanström.

Taking inspiration from the immrama, stories of Irish Sea journeys to the other world, the show opens with a performance hosted by Isadora Epstein with musicians Méabh McKenna, Seamas Hyland, and artist Stéphane Béna Hanly.
