GREYSTONES FILM CLUB: THE SHINING

When the Library of Congress selected The Shining in 2018 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being ‘culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant’, they weren’t wrong! Regarded as one of the finest horror films of all time, Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation of Stephen King’s eponymous 1977 novel tells the story of writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) taking a winter caretaker position at the remote and shuttered Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, bringing along his wife (Duvall) and young son (Danny Lloyd).

That a previous winter caretaker killed his wife and two young daughters doesn’t seem to bother Jack. Nor do his son’s frightening premonitions and psychic visions. Well they should!

MUSHROOM HUNT –WITH BILL O’DEA

Join Ireland’s premier mycophagist, Bill O’Dea for a dedicated course to learn about one of nature’s most underestimated mysteries – fungi, as you hunt and forage around our 800acre Estate.

The only dedicated mushroom hunt held at Killruddery, this workshop is suitable for complete beginners and intermediate practitioners, with all materials provided. After tea/coffee and scones on arrival, Bill will give a talk on the wonderful world of mushrooms with guidance on identifying edible and toxic mushrooms, while also sharing information on their medicinal uses, nutrition and their importance in ecosystems. Then, the mushroom hunting will commence!

Once your mushrooms have been gathered, you’ll return to base and enjoy lunch, before Bill and his team will help identify and cook your findings, so you can sample your foraged delights.

Coral Leisure Arklow - Swimming For All Inspiring The Future Swimming Community

The swimming pool at Coral Leisure Arklow has been driving and nurturing the swimming community of Arklow and its surrounding area for nearly 20 years. The indoor 25m pool opened in 1999 replacing the outdoor pool which many local people of a certain generation will have fond memories of learning to swim under the guidance of Nancy Quinn and the instructors of the pool over the years.

From late 2003 Coral Leisure have been facilitating and offering an extensive range of aquatic activities from swimming lessons, lifesaving classes and competitive swimming, from toddler age right through to adulthood following the Long-Term Athlete Development programme. The first lesson experience and for some the first introduction to the pool is through our Water Confidence Classes taking place on Monday afternoons. These classes suitable for children age 2 ½ - 4 yrs are taught in a relaxed and fun focused setting. Our main programme of swimming lessons catering for children aged 4 yrs upwards have grown from classes taking place 3 days per week to 6 days per week. We offer a simple and straightforward booking process with a new term of lessons starting every 8 weeks. Our qualified and experienced instructors deliver a high quality and standard of swimming across 8 different levels.

This September a new initiative was introduced to give children access to more pool time, while creating an opportunity for children to practice what they have been learning and to just have an extra swim or two between their lessons, free of charge! Upon enrolment each child gets issued with a pass enabling them to have free access to our pool during public swimming hours. This has already proven hugely popular with many of our swimmers.

When a child has reached the last stage of our swimming lessons - Pre-Club level, their swimming journey doesn’t have to stop there. Once Pre-Club level has been completed children are then ready to move into either our RLSS Rookie Lifeguard Programme or for some looking to get into the competitive side of swimming, Asgard Swim Club.

The RLSS Rookie Lifeguard programme is delivered by our in-house RLSS Trainer and Assessor, Nicola Walker. Nicola delivers the various stages of the RLSS Rookie programme, awarding successful candidates their Bronze, Silver, Gold medallions and also the Survive and Save award. Built into the programme are lessons in valuable survival, rescue and sports skills, all delivered in an exciting way that will get children involved and motivated.

Asgard Swim Club is a competitive swimming club that caters for athletes at different stages of development following through on the Learning to Train. Their aim is to provide a friendly atmosphere in which swimmers can achieve their full potential, develop social skills in a sporting environment. With currently over 120 members they have had many swimmers through the club representing the club at National and International Level.

Sometimes group lessons are not for everyone and we provide the option of one to one lessons for adults and children which may be more suited to their needs, daily lifestyle and schedules.

Outside of our children’s swimming lessons programme we endeavour to keep the community of Arklow and its surroundings enjoying swimming. Adult Swim Lessons and currently running at the moment a Learn to Swim for Women programme through Wicklow Sports Partnership.

Coral Leisure will continue to be the focal point for swimming within the community. We are grateful for the continued support of all involved.

What You Don’t Know Can Cost You:

1. 14% Fireplaces are warm, right? Yes, but if the flue is left open, 14% of your heat goes up the chimney. You might as well be burning money.

2. 13% Everywhere pipes, wires or lighting come into your house, heat can get out. Seals and insulation can keep up to 13 percent of that heat inside where it belongs.

3. 10% Windows leak about 10% of your warm air. Get them sealed up with caulk and shut them tight.

4. 15% Another 15% of your heat gets out through leaky duct work. Sealing them up can yield savings of 10 – 20 percent.

5. 11% Doors are major culprits. A 1/8inch gap is like knocking a hole in your wall. Proper weather stripping can reduce the 11 percent loss to nearly zero.

COST:

Cost will obviously be an important deciding factor, depending on your personal situation. Not only the initial cost, but also maintenance and upgrade costs. Is it financially viable for you to do a complete overhaul of your heating system, or can smaller upgrades be made?

FUEL ACCESSIBILITY:

Gas is currently much cheaper than electricity when it comes to heating your house, so if you’re not connected to the gas network, you’ll need to weigh up the cost of connection against using electricity, installing an LPG or oil tank, or alternative heating resources such as solar, or heat pumps.

HOW ENERGY EFFICIENT IS YOUR HOME?

The insulation and airtightness of any home dictate how efficient a heating system will be, and how much heating effort will be needed. If your house is well-insulated and airtight, you won’t need a system with as much capacity for heat and hot water generation. It’s important to remember that investing in better insulation will also reduce your energy bills and increase the efficiency of whatever heating system you have installed.

In adition, as if reducing your energy bills and carbon footprint wasn’t enough of an incentive, you should check to see if you qualify for any of the grants available for upgrading residential heating systems.

HOME HEATING HACKS:

Lower the temperature to 16ºC when you sleep — Not only will a cooler room lower your energy bills, but it will also help you to fall asleep faster by cooling your body and simulating the temperature during your sleep cycle.

Use blackout curtains — Having them closed at night reduce heat loss through your windows in winter. If you close them during the day, they can also keep your house from heating up too much during a rare hot spell.

Eliminate drafts in your home — Add draft excluders under doors and use insulating tape on

other problem areas. You can buy a cheap roll at your local home improvement shop.

Glaze your windows — Double (and even triple) glazing will reduce condensation, heat loss and noise pollution. It will also increase your home’s security (by making the windows harder to break), as well as reduce interior fading.

Reflect the heat from your radiators — Radiator reflector foils are not only cheap, but they’re also easy to install. These panels will stop radiator heat from being absorbed by your walls rather than heating up the air in the room.

Ballinastoe Woods Boardwalk

The Ballinastoe Woods walk is one of the more popular walks in Wicklow where family and friends can enjoy the views, some fresh air and a bit of outdoor activity time for the kids.

Part of the mighty Wicklow Way, Ballinastoe Forest is a fine little stop-off point if you’re doing the Sally Gap Drive and you want to hop out of the car for a ramble.

You’ll find Ballinastoe Woods in Wicklow, at Sraghmore, Oldtown, to be precise. It’s a stone’s throw from Lough Tay and a short drive from Roundwood Village.

There are several different walks of varying lengths that you can tackle here, and they range from 30 minutes to 3.5 hours+ in length.

The “Wicklow Way Car Park” is a good spot to park and then walk along the road to Ballinastoe Woods, the JB Malone Car Park is quite a walk away from the boardwalk. Here is a close up of the entry point to the Ballinastoe Woods boardwalk from the road. Of course, there are other ways to do the Ballinastoe Woods Walk, but this may be the quickest route.
