Obviously, one doesn’t wish to make a big deal of it, but the experience has left him with a story to tell and a few things that
he’d like to share with the room. So that’s exactly what he’s doing in his new show On I Bang – a tale about surprise, fear, luck, love and qualified medical practitioners.

Ireland’s Premier Offshore Yacht Race
Join us in Wicklow – June 22nd, 2024 | Wicklow Sailing Club | Start Time: 13.00
The Round Ireland is Ireland’s premier offshore yacht race, and the second longest race in the Royal Ocean Racing Club calendar. The first race took place in 1980 with only sixteen boats. Since then, held biennially, the fleet has grown steadily, attracting a record 64 entrants from all over the world.
There are a number classes in IRC in which boats and their crews can compete. 2004 saw the launch of the “Two-handed Class” which has introduced a new level of competition for the more extreme sailor. The 2016 race saw the introduction of multihulls sailing under MOCRA rules. In the past, boats competing have ranged from a 98-footer former “round the world” maxi, to club boats one third the size, with all shades in between. There will be a Class 40 category in the 2018 race.
“Starting and finishing at Wicklow, leave Ireland and all its islands excluding Rockall to starboard. The distance is approximately 704 nautical miles”
Wicklow Sailing Club is delighted that the Royal Irish Yacht Club, Dun Laoghaire, has agreed to act as the Dublin host club since the 2014 race. This association with the RIYC is especially beneficial as it enables more and larger competing yachts to be hosted prior to the start of the race.
The race is uniquely identified by a series of waypoints around the Irish coast at which the competitors used to report their position and time. With the introduction of GPS tracking in 2008, this necessity to report in has been removed.
Round Ireland course records
The current monohull record is held by George David in Rambler 88 who completed the course in 50 hours 24 minutes and 9 seconds in 2016.
The multihull record time was set by the Sultanate of Oman’s flagship trimaran Musandam-Oman Sail at 38 hours 37 minutes and 7 seconds in that same race of 2016.
A Big Race run by a Small Club
The Round Ireland continues to be a big race run by a small club and for the competitors who return again and again, this is what makes the event so special.
The warm greeting and round the clock bar service when returning to Wicklow bring competitors back to the race year after year.

The Glen Beach Cliff Walk
This way marked walk begins at the Glen Beach on the outskirts of Wicklow town and continues south to Lime-Kiln Bay and on towards the Lighthouse Road before doubling back again in a loop, a total distance of about 4kms.
The trail encompasses one of the most spectacular stretches of the Wicklow coastline, offering a unique opportunity to experience nature and to explore local history and archaeology.
The walk has some climbs and runs close to exposed cliff edges where walking in single file is required. The trail surface is uneven and rough underfoot with some obstacles such as protruding rocks. The route is appropriate for people with a moderate level of fitness and some walking experience. Specific outdoor walking footwear and clothing is recommended.
A wonderful variety of habitats are evident on the walk and sightings of individual Grey Seals swimming among the rocky shore are common from the trail while the very observant may be occasionally rewarded with glimpses of porpoise and dolphins further offshore.
The rocky outcrops overlooking Lime Kiln Bay provide ideal viewing sites for birds and seals, however you are advised to keep your profile low to avoid drawing attention to your presence and keep dogs on a lead and never allow them to approach seals.

Visit Wicklow Town
The Black Castle
The Black Castle ruin stands on a rocky headland over the sea. There is a fine vantage point for views over the town and the coast of North Wicklow from the ruins. The Vikings were extremely active in the Wicklow Town area from around 795 and in 834 they plundered the Monastery at Glendalough. In the same year they fortified a strategic rocky promonatory at the mouth of the Vartry River in Wicklow town. A castle was subsequently built now known as the Black Castle. There is no mention of the Castle in recorded history until 1174, following the Norman invasion. Between 1295 and 1315 the Castle was attacked and burnt down twice by the local O’ Byrne Clan.
The Murrough Playground

The seaside playground is big with a pirate theme, has plenty of safe playing equipment and activities for kids of all ages including swings, slides, climbing frames in the ship, a zip, etc. There is a skate park next to the playground all in which offer a beautiful view of Wicklow’s coast.
