Looking for América DATE: Friday 25th – Saturday 26th March | TIME: 8pm | TICKETS: €18

Little Mix – 3 Arena, Dublin The Confetti Tour I am often asked “where do you get your material from?”

Following his father’s arrest by a Military Junta, at the age of five, Fede and his family were forced to flee the Salvadoran Civil war. There followed years of continuous moving throughout Latin America with his mother and brother as they sought sanctuary. Looking for América charts two journeys. The journey of that night in Havana looking for a Salvadoran ex-Guerilla fighter called América, and the journey of escaping the catastrophe that had engulfed his country decades before. A catastrophe whose after effects still resonate today.

The truth is really that I try to see the funny in everything. My mother died in March 2019 and of course it was sad and grief can be tough sometimes but I saw a lot of funny in that too. Since death comes to us all and grief is something most of us will experience I thought there must be plenty of people who would like that funny to be shared. Also I did a show about my Dad being sick back in 2010 and I couldn’t face my mother in the afterlife because I know her first question would be “your Father got a show, how come I didn’t get one?”

Spring gardening

Bring on the sun!

Get out c about in your

; Garden ; pring this S

Winter is normally a quiet time in the garden but it does not be long before Spring arrives and you’ll be caught up in the frenzy pf seed-sowing, growing and nurturing your garden as it comes to life. Getting your garden in order early will help make the Spring a little less hectic. A trip to your local garden centre is a great idea this time of year. Staff can give you expert advice on which plants, trees and shrubs will grow best in your area. They can also recommend local landscapers and gardeners who can look after your garden, if you are unable to do it yourself.

Lawn Care

The most important lawn care job for a fantastic lawn is correct and regular mowing. You need to cut the

grass whenever it is growing – which is likely to be weekly or even more frequently as the weather warms up in Spring. Trim the edges along the pathways and flowerbeds to get a nice clean look to your lawn.

fixed now! so you have more time to spend in the Garden during Spring and Summer. Treat your wooden garden structures with a wood preservative during dry periods.

Hedges

Fix Fences, Gates & Trellis Good hedges make good neighbours, but a hedge does much more than mark boundaries. It creates a shelter belt to protect everything in the garden and far more efficiently than walls or fences. It also provides a habitat for wildlife. Choice of plant will depend on the hedge’s intended purpose. Although it is still a little cold outside this is an ideal time of the year to get those niggly little jobs out of the way. Any broken structures are best

Trees & Shrubs

In addition to being ornamental, trees and shrubs provide privacy and shade.

Powerscourt Tulip Display 2022 11 th April - 16 th May

This year the Tulip display is back, and will be bigger and more beautiful with 40,000 Tulips to enjoy in the Gardens. There will be 30,000 in Herbaceous border (Irelands longest double-sided border) and 8,000 in the annual beds in the iconic Italian Gardens and a further 2000 in other beds around the Gardens.

and tending to the bulbs to ensure a beautiful display for you.

Along with over 30,000 daffodils and 2000 hyacinths around the gardens. This Spring Powerscourt is a must.

Come for a walk through the gardens and enjoy the tulips at various points in your visit, particularly in the Walled Garden and along the Herbaceous border. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do each year!

The head gardener Alex and his team have been working hard for months; selecting both favourite and unusual tulip varieties, planning layout and colour schemes and of course, planting Powerscourt Estate, Enniskerry, County Wicklow | 01 204 6000 | info@powerscourt.net | www.powerscourt.com

They screen eyesores and provide habitats for wildlife. Long-lived, they need little attention once they are established. In terms of garden design, aim to have a combination of different shapes, contrasting colours of foliage and specimens that will provide interest at different times of the year.

It's a skill that we've lost to a large degree, but I often think if people realised how easy, cheap and satisfying it is to grow your own vegetables, many issues could be tackled.

Grow your own Veg

Roses

Of all the garden plant’s you can grow, roses offer the very best value. They flower for a long period, providing colour and fragrance. With a little care you can enjoy them year after year.

Now that it's March we can look forward to getting really busy in the garden. And if you're planning to grow some edibles this year, you can be out in the garden in coming weeks preparing the ground.

Growing vegetables is fun. Yes, it requires work, but it comes with great rewards - they are fresh, taste better than produce that has been deep chilled or flown halfway across the world, and you have complete control over what goes in the soil to feed your food.

It is an economically challenging time for many people. In past decades, when more of the population was living in rural parts of the country, many people grew their own food, whether they were farmers or not.

Bray Jazz Festival

Jazz It Up A Little

M

issing for the past two years because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Bray Jazz Festival makes a welcome return, bringing top quality international music to County Wicklow on the upcoming May Bank Holiday weekend.

More info at: www.brayjazz.com YAZZ AHMED QUARTET (UK)

Stellar names in world jazz are on the bill for 2022, as the festival returns, in a slightly scaled-back post-pandemic format, on April 29th, 30th and May 1st next. Here’s InWicklow’s pick of the bunch:

ARIEL BART TRIO (ISRAEL/JAPAN)

For those who think that the harmonica is the sole preserve of players such as our own Don Baker, think again. At aged just 23, Berlin-based Ariel Bart is a once in a generation talent that will put jazz harmonica at centre-stage for years to come. (Town Hall, Sunday) British Bahraini Yazz Ahmed won awards for both ‘best artist’ and ‘best album’ in the prestigious Jazz FM awards, in 2020. She’s a trumpeter at the cutting edge of urban UK jazz. (Mermaid, Saturday)

ILARIA CAPALBO QUINTET (ITALY/SWEDEN)

RENAUD GARCIA-FONS & CLAIRE ANTONINI (FRANCE)

It’s baroque, it’s classical, it’s jazz, it’s folk – it’s music from two musicians at the height of their powers. (Town Hall, Saturday)

BILL FRISELL TRIO (USA)

TORD GUSTAVSEN TRIO (NORWAY)

Possibly the best jazz pianist in Europe, Gustavsen’s distinctive Nordic jazz melodies are ambient and atmospheric, and have made him a major star. (Mermaid, Sunday)

Another female band leader and emerging star, bass player Ilaria Capalbo has been winning rave reviews for a spectacular debut album that she released at the end of 2021. She plays a matinee show at Mermaid on Sunday, 1st May.

The biggest star who’s playing this year’s festival, he’s a Grammy Award winner and he’s one of the best guitar players in the world. He’s listed last as it’s certain that the show will have been sold out long before you get to read this! (Mermaid, Friday)
