National Spring Clean Month!

National Spring Clean is Ireland’s most popular and successful anti-litter initiative. Anyone can get involved – schools, businesses, community groups, sports clubs and individuals. Last year over 100 groups in Wicklow took part.

Taking part in the National Spring Clean is very straightforward. Organise for a clean up of your local area, to take place any time during April, and register your event online, by phone, fax or post with An Taisce. Once you have registered you will receive a FREE clean-up kit from An Taisce. The clean up kit contains valuable tips on how to hold a successful cleanup event, posters to advertise your event, ideas on how to make your event different and lots more useful information. The pack also includes plastic bags in which to collect your litter, tabards to keep your clothes clean and gloves to keep your hands safe and clean and a number of colour coded bags are provided for collection of litter that can be recycled. If you are an individual contact your local Tidy Towns group or get together with neighbours

Arklow 160ft Bungee Jump In Aid of the Hope Foundation Sunday, May 20th, 2018 10am – 4pm | Moneylands Farm, Arklow, Co Wicklow 10 students from Gaelcholáiste na Mara in Arklow along with their teacher Aaron Mac Fhionnlaoich and Fiona Redmond are organising a Bungee Jump in aid of the Hope Foundation. The Hope Foundation is a Irish charity working with street and slum children in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), India. HOPE funds and operates over 60 projects in Kolkata that offer child protection, education, healthcare, training and an emergency response to those who are most forgotten. Students from Gaelcholáiste na Mara in Arklow are participating in the Hope Foundations School Immersion Programme. Through this programme students are afforded the unique opportunity to travel to Kolkata for one week and to visit the projects. They will witness, first-hand, the work of HOPE and the extremities of life in Kolkata.

Japanese Gardens Tower Valley In Tower Valley you will find the Pepperpot Tower which was modelled on a pepperpot from Lord Powerscourt’s dining table! It is from this that Tower Valley received its distinctive name. Climb the tower’s winding steps and enjoy the views of Powerscourt House and Gardens. Why not stop for a photo beside the many cannons surrounding the tower! Lord Powerscourt was an avid fan of the scouting movement and encouraged troops to camp on the grounds at Powerscourt. When you reach the top of the tower, you are standing where Lord Powerscourt 8th Viscount once stood and surveyed the scout camps long ago, although now the trees have grown too high to do so! Scout troops still occasionally camp on these grounds today.

Powerscourt Waterfall

Powerscourt Waterfall is Ireland’s highest at 121m (398ft.) and is 6km from the Main Estate. It is set in one of Ireland’s most beautiful parklands at the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. Surrounded by Beech, Oak, Larch and Pine trees some of which were planted over 200 years ago. Look out for the Giant Redwoods, which are native to Northern

The Japanese Garden looks wonderful in spring when the azaleas are in full bloom and their blossoms perfume the air, and in autumn with the vibrant colours of the Japanese maples. Stone lanterns guide you through the winding paths of the garden, bringing you to its innermost circle. Here you will find a Pagoda and a trickling stream under pretty Japanese bridges. The next circle is marked by a ring of Chinese Fortune Palms, which have been cultivated in China and Japan for thousands of years and were first brought to Europe in 1830. The upper circle provides stunning views of the Japanese Garden and the Sugar Loaf Mountain in the distance.

Designed to commemorate the centenary of the creation of the viscountancy at Powerscourt, the clock tower was built with granite from the quarry in Glencree. It incorporated two stands for drinking water and a horse trough. The water was supplied from Dixon’s well, a spring on the north side of the nearby bridge. The surrounding garden is in the shape of a shamrock and Lord Powerscourt dedicated the monument on St Patrick’s Day in 1843. From the mid19th century, there was a monthly fair held here in the shade of a great oak tree.
