Belles in the Meadow 27th & 28th April, 2019 Before 20 x 20 there were a couple of parents who wanted their daughters to play football. Unfortunately, there were no girls to play against. So what to do? Well, you start a girls football tournament of course!!! Belles in the Meadow is a tournament started back in 2007. The brainchild of two Enniskerry FC club members, Jonathan Bennett and John Molloy. The objective was to promote the participation of girls in organised team sport. Belles in the Meadow is now Ireland’s largest girls football tournament, a 2-day event catering for girls aged 6 – 16 years. The tournament has grown consistently each year, with 2018 seeing Belles host over 25 clubs, 90 teams, 900 players and 3000 football fans from all over Ireland.

This event runs on the 1st Saturday of every month from April and all are welcome, including children. The walk takes about an hour and a half and you will need sturdy shoes and weather appropriate clothing. This year, the tulip festival at Powerscourt is back and bigger than ever with an additional 4,000 Tulip bulbs planted. The Head Gardener Alex and his team have been working hard for months; selecting both favourite and unusual tulip varieties, planning layout and colour schemes and of course, planting and tending to the bulbs to ensure a beautiful display for you. Come for a walk through the Gardens and enjoy the Tulips at various points in your visit, particularly in the Walled Garden and along the Herbaceous border. NATIONAL SPRING CLEAN 2019 Get involved. Show you care National Spring Clean is Irelandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most popular and successful anti-litter initiative. Anyone or any group can get involved. Last year close to 150 events were held in County Wicklow. This year again Wicklow County Council is working with An Taisce to support the campaign, and help to get all our communities litter free. How to get involved? Organise a date for a clean up event in your community and register it with National Spring Clean. Contact Wicklow County Council if you need materials including bags, litter pickers and gloves and also to arrange a collection of the bags afterwards. If you prefer your local Tidy Towns group may have clean ups planned or other activities which you can help out with in your local town and you could join with them instead of organising your own event.

Camp 1 is for beginners who are perhaps using a balance bike or want to come off the stabilisers. Camp 2 (Sprocket Rocket) is a skills course focussing on pedalling, cornering, balancing and braking. CLOCK TOWE R Designed to commemorate the century of the creation of the viscountancy at Powerscourt, the clock tower was built with granite from the quarry in Glencree. It incorporated two sands for drinking water and a horse trough. The water was supplied from Dixon’s well, a spring on the north side of the nearby bridge. The surrounding garden is in the shape of a shamrock and Lord Powerscourt dedicated the monument on St Patrick’s Day in 1843. From the mid-19th century, there was a monthly fair held here in the shade of a great oak tree.

ormerly the hub of all farming activity on the Estate, the Old Mill House is being faithfully restored and extended to help accommodate the distillery’s development. Steeped in history and built using local Wicklow granite, the bell that adorns the northern west wall was originally used to herald the daily lunch break to workers in distant fields. Being one of the older buildings on the Estate, it boasts an ancient water mill deep in its foundations. Three custom-designed copper pot stills form the Distillery centrepiece. Uniquely shaped by skilled craftsmen, these copper stills are made in much the same way as they were in the 1800’s when the Mill House was in daily use. Powerscourt Distillery has been custom designed and commissioned by Forsyths, a 5th-generation family owned business from Scotland who have been manufacturing distillery equipment since the 1890’s. The Powerscourt Distillery Visitor Centre will open in early 2019 with a variety of tours, whiskey tastings and events throughout the year. Grilled Pork Chops with Stir Fried Pak Choi

To make the Gravy 1. Place the roasting pan over a moderate heat to caramelise the lamb juices (this should take 2-3 minutes). 2. Strain of any excess fat. Pour in 350ml cold water or stock. Reduce heat and simmer gently for 5 minutes. 3. Strain through a sieve and enjoy.

Roast Spring Leg of Lamb with Garlic & Rosemary

Bacon with Creamy Cabbage and Champ Mash

Ingredients: • 4 pork chops • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Marinade • • • • • •

4 tbsp Hoisin Sauce 2 tbsp Sesame Oil 2 tbsp Honey ½ tsp Chinese five spice powder 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 3cm piece of root ginger, finely grated • Juice of 1 lemon • ½ chilli, deseeded and chopped

Stir-fry Pak Choi • • • •

4 pak choi 1 tbsp Wicklow Rapeseed oil 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed ½ chilli, deseeded and chopped

Method 1. Combine all the marinade ingredients in a bowl. Place the chops in a dish and pour over half the marinade. Keeping the rest to serve with the cooked chops. Allow to marinate for 20 minutes or overnight if possible. 2. Preheat the grill and cook the chops for 3-4 minutes on each side, depending on how thick they are. 3. Meanwhile heat the rapeseed oil in wok or large frying pan. Roughly chop the pak choi leaves and stalks into strips. Add to the hot oil along with the garlic and

METHOD: 1. Preheat the oven to 220°C. Make 1 inch deep incisions in the lamb. Insert the garlic cloves and rosemary sprigs into each incision. 2. Rub the butter over the lamb and place the leg along with the halved head of garlic in a roasting dish, season and place in the oven for 1-1.5 hours (15 minutes per 450g/1lb for rare and 20 minutes for medium) turning over half way through. 3. Remove the lamb from the oven, season again and transfer to a tray to rest. 4. Serve the lamb with plenty of seasonal vegetables and gravy.

METHOD: 1. Place the bacon in a large saucepan along with the bay leaf, peppercorns, vinegar, mustard and onion and cover with cold water. Put a lid on the saucepan and bring to the boil. Then reduce the heat and gently simmer for about an hour. Allow 20 minutes per ½ kg. 2. While the bacon is cooking make the glaze. In a small bowl mix together the balsamic vinegar, honey, wholegrain mustard and rosemary or sage. 3. When the bacon is cooked preheat the oven to Gas Mark 4, 180°C (350°F). Remove the bacon from the water and place in a baking dish lined with foil. Allow to cool a little. Then remove the rind and discard. Brush the bacon liberally with the glaze. Keep aside a tablespoon of the glaze to flavour the cabbage. Place in the oven and bake for 20 minutes. 4. To cook the cabbage, melt the butter in a large saucepan. Add the cabbage and apple and cook for about ten minutes stirring occasionally. Then stir the cream and reserved glaze through the cabbage. Simmer uncovered until the cream has thickened. This will take 5-6 minutes. Taste and season. 5. To make champ, melt the butter in a small saucepan and gently sauté the scallions until softened. Pour in the milk and butter and bring to a simmer. Mash the potatoes and then using a wooden spoon, beat in the milk mixture until you have achieved smooth, creamy mash. Taste and season.

In 2002, he spent 36 hours standing atop a 30 meter pillar without a safety net, suffering a concussion after leaping ten stories into a pile of cardboard boxes. He survived for 73 hours with over one million volts of electricity discharged at him continuously from Tesla coils. Blaine endured 44 days of starvation inside a glass box suspended by a crane near the River Thames in London. When it was all over he emerged forever changed. In 2006, he lived underwater for a week in a sphere shaped aquarium at Lincoln Centre in New York City. Performing his role of Jack Skellington, Danny Elfman will be joined by other original cast members Catherine O’Hara as Sally, and Ken Page as the voice of Oogie Boogie with full orchestral accompaniment by the Orchestra of Ireland. Conductor John Mauceri, Founding Director of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, will be leading the full orchestra and choir performing the film’s classic score and songs live to picture. The concert will also include featured violin soloist, Sandy Cameron.
