Tree Week at Powerscourt LAUNCH OF NATIONAL TREE WEEK Date: Sunday 2nd March, 2pm Venue: Orchard Area, located next to Powerscourt Garden Pavilion Cost: Free of charge (apart from guided walks in the Gardens) We are delighted that the Launch of National Tree Week is taking place at Powerscourt Estate this year. There is so much to look forward to at this free family event including a giveaway of over 2,000 trees thanks to Coillte. There will be the opportunity to meet tree specialists, wood turners, bee-keepers and basket weavers and learn about these crafts and pastimes. There are lots of activities for children to enjoy including a climbing wall, archery lessons and face-painting. All of the above events are free of charge and take place in the Orchard Area of Powerscourt, near the Garden Pavilion and car-park. There will be a number of tree walks taking place in Powerscourt Gardens which are included in the entry price to the gardens. Our thanks to the Tree Council, Coillte and sponsors Airtricity. VISIT THE TALLEST TREE IN IRELAND Date: Wednesday 5th March, 11.00am Venue: Powerscourt River Walk, meet outside Powerscourt Garden Pavilion – Booking is essential. Cost: Adult €5, Annual Members free of charge Visit Ireland’s Tallest Tree along Powerscourt River Walk! Enjoy a guided walk along the tranquil and secluded river walk at Powerscourt, guided by the Powerscourt Head Gardener Michael Byrne. Standing at over 61.5 metres, this tree towers above well known landmarks including Dublin’s Liberty Hall at 59.5 metres and Niagara Falls at 51metres. On the walk you can enjoy learning about the abundance of trees along the River Walk including over 50 Monkey Puzzles grouped together, Giant Redwoods, Norway Spruce, Fir Trees and the Multi-Stemmed Cyprus among many others. Note: This walk is over 5km long (including the return journey) and will be about an hour long and features steep inclines so you must be fit and please wear good walking shoes. The event is geared towards adults but children are more than welcome.

How do you improve the ‘Best Bar in the World?’ When the iconic Harbour Bar, voted the ‘Best Bar in the World’ in 2010 by Lonely Planet travel guide, was sold in August 2013 some worried that it would lose the intangible aura of authenticity that surrounded it. The pub had been owned by the O’Toole family for 82 years and was originally established in 1871. The Harbour Bar has a long and storied history, immortalised in James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake, and has seen the likes of Peter O’Toole, Laurence Olivier, Katherine Hepburn, Bono, Christy Moore and Liam Neeson drop in for a pint over the years. Those few needn’t have worried. The Duggans, another well-known Bray publican family, bought the pub with a commitment to preserve the spirit of the institution and a desire to improve it in ways that would help it really live up to the ‘best bar’ title. The pub has undergone a respectful renovation making it still recognisable to its patrons, many familiar antiques still reside within, but it is vastly improved in practical ways. It now boasts an excellent stage, a distinctive loung and previously unused backrooms and the first floor are now open to the public with plenty of cosy spots by an open fire. Music has always been at the heart of The Harbour Bar and its new owners are keen to build on this with music on from Wed-Sun in the Live Lounge. They have created a new hub of talent by combining local acts with established successful artists such as David Kitt and Mark Geary; providing a busy programme which

includes traditional Irish music and open-mic sessions. The newly renovated first floor is the perfect space for an intimate performance. The owners have taken a measured approach to updating the pub. They have restored the courtesy taxi service phone and have just begun introducing food in the pub. When the sea air gets the appetite going, visitors can enjoy toasties, locally baked cakes and coffee. The local reaction to the revived Harbour Bar has been overwhelmingly positive and now the pub is waiting to be rediscovered by those from far and wide who are looking for that something special. Rita is a St. Nicholas Montessori Teacher with many qualiďŹ cations in childcare, psychology, medical area, etc. She loves her job and this shows in the high standards, happy children and motivated staff in her care. Rita understands that yes it is more challenging, expensive and time consuming to run four

schools but much more beneďŹ cial and natural for the children to spend time in small home like facilities rather than in large crèches. Rita also ďŹ nds time to be the leader of the Greystones Chernobyl Project Group as she feels that it is very important for all the community to reach out to children around the world whose lives are very challenging and different from ours. “When we all help a little we can make a big difference!!â€? All our staff are fully trained and Garda Vetted and believe strongly in creating a homely, yet educational environment which nourishes the individuality and talents of all the children who attend our facilities. During their time with us the children will be given the skills and opportunities to develop

their self-esteem and conďŹ dence. The majority of our staff are with us for many years and this ensures a continuity of care for the children which is so rare and terribly important for their conďŹ dence, security and development. Wedding Hair & Make-up Your big day is approaching and everything is planned. One thing you may need to put more time into is deciding how to wear your hair. Coordinate with the style of the wedding. The Book Thief (12a) Release Date: Feb 26th Based on the beloved international best selling book, The Book Thief tells the story of an extraordinary, spirited young girl sent to live with a foster family in WWII Germany. Intrigued by the only book she brought with her, she begins collecting books as she finds them. With the help of her new parents and a secret guest under the stairs, she learns to read and creates a magical world that inspires them all.

Non-Stop (tbc) Release Date: Feb 28th Global action star Liam Neeson stars in Non-Stop, a suspense thriller played out at 40,000 feet in the air. During a transatlantic flight from New York City to London, U.S. Air Marshal Bill Marks (Neeson) receives a series of cryptic text messages demanding that he instruct the airline to transfer $150 million into an off-shore account. Until he secures the money, a passenger on his flight will be killed every 20 minutes.

Winter’s Tale (tbc) Release Date: Feb 21st Set in a mythic New York City and spanning more than a century, “Winter’s Tale” is a story of miracles, crossed destinies, and the age-old battle between good and evil. The film stars Colin Farrell (“Total Recall”), Jessica Brown Findlay (TV’s “Downton Abbey”), and Oscar® winners Jennifer Connelly (“A Beautiful Mind”), William Hurt (“Kiss of the Spider Woman”), Eva Marie Saint (“On the Waterfront”) and Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”). “Winter’s Tale” also introduces young newcomers Ripley Sobo and Mckayla Twiggs (both from Broadway’s “Once”). 300: Rise Of An Empire (tbc) Release Date: March 7th Based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel Xerxes and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster “300,” this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield--on the sea--as Greek general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton)attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war. “300: Rise of an Empire” pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), and Artemesia (Eva Green), vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

GRAVITY (12) Release Date – 28/02/2014 George Clooney and Sandra Bullock star in this award-winning sci-fi thriller directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Seasoned astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) is on his final mission in space, while medical engineer Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is making her first outing on the Space Shuttle. While they are engaged in extra-vehicular activity, debris collides into the shuttle, damaging it irreparably. Kowalsky and Stone now find themselves drifting in space with low oxygen supplies and cut off from all communication on Earth. They work together in their attempt to survive but will they make it back to solid ground? The film was nominated for ten Academy Awards.

BAD GRANDPA (15) Release Date – 28/02/2014 Johnny Knoxville reprises his ‘Bad Grandpa’ role from the popular American reality show ‘Jackass’ for this extended cut of the one-off narrativedriven feature directed by long-time collaborator Jeff Tremaine. 86-year-old Irving Zisman (Knoxville) takes his grandson Billy (Jackson Nicoll) on a road trip across the United States to reunite him with his father. Along the way, the trouble-making duo enter a children’s beauty pageant and visit a funeral home while unleashing a bevy of pranks on an unsuspecting public.

THOR – THE DARK WORLD (12) Release Date – 21/02/2014 Action adventure sequel which sees Chris Hemsworth reprise his role as the Marvel Comics superhero Thor, based on the mythical Norse God of Thunder. After the events of ‘Marvel Avengers Assemble’ (2012), Earth and the Nine Realms come under attack from the powerful Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) and his age-old army that have existed since even before the creation of the universe. With the enemy proving near impossible to defeat, Thor approaches his adoptive brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) for help, despite his villainous past. Meanwhile, the hero becomes reacquainted with the woman he loves, astrophysicist Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), and takes her to Asgard in an attempt to protect her from harm.

EMPEROR (12) Release Date – 21/02/2014 Director Peter Webber’s drama follows the events leading to the decision on whether Japan’s Emperor should be indicted as a war criminal at the close of WWII. Set in the days following Japan’s surrender in 1945, the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, General of the Army Douglas MacArthur (Tommy Lee Jones), assigns Brigadier General Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox) the task of investigating the role played by Emperor Hirohito (Takatarô Kataoka)during the war. Given only ten days to complete his findings, however, Fellers soon finds himself torn between the completion of his mission and his own personal search for Aya (Eriko Hatsune), the exchange student who captured his heart before the war.

Biopic starring Naomi Watts as the eponymous public icon, Diana Princess of Wales. The film tells the story of Diana’s final two years before her death in Paris in 1997. Shortly after her divorce from Prince Charles, Diana began dating the respected British Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews), although this relationship was short-lived due to Khan’s insistence on keeping his matters private. During this period of her life Diana undertook a variety of fund-raising and charity work which only strengthened her appeal and reputation in the public eye and her relationship with Dodi Fayed (Cas Anvar), son of Egyptian business magnate Mohamed Al-Fayed, also garnered much public attention. However, it is this relationship that would spell the end for Diana as both were killed in a car crash in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris - an event which has been a topic of debate ever since.

ONE CHANCE (12) Release Date – 21/02/2014 Biopic starring James Corden as ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ winner Paul Potts. The film chartsPotts’ rise to fame, from his humble beginnings as a timid shop assistant to an internationally-renowned opera singer thanks to his success on the 2007 British talent show. Following a string of failed chances, dismissals from his idol Pavarotti and unforeseeable accidents, Paul’s determination and talent enabled him to battle through against the odds and achieve his lifelong dream.

CLOSED CIRCUIT (15) Release Date – 14/02/2014 Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall star in this tense thriller as former lovers caught up in a conspiracy when they’re both placed on the same defence team for a high-profile terrorist trial. When terrorists explode a bomb in a crowded London market, the only surviving suspect Farroukh Erdogan (Denis Moschitto), is arrested pending trial. Because of the nature of the classified evidence involved, lawyers Martin Rose (Bana) and Claudia Simmons-Howe (Hall)are appointed by the Attorney General (Jim Broadbent) to represent Farroukh, with Claudia strictly limited to reviewing the ‘closed’ secret evidence submitted by the security services, and Martin representing the accused in open court. With no contact permitted between the two lawyers during the trial, they’re decision to conceal a previous affair from the courts comes back to haunt them when, after uncovering unsettling facts about their client, they find themselves under surveillance and fearing for their lives.

BLUE JASMINE (12) Release Date – 14/02/2014 Woody Allen writes and directs this award-winning comedy drama starring Cate Blanchett, Peter Saarsgard and Sally Hawkins. Single, broke and suffering from a nervous breakdown, housewife Jasmine (Blanchett) travels from New York to San Francisco to stay with her sister Ginger (Hawkins). While Ginger encourages her to become an interior designer, Jasmine’s snobbish outlook causes her to question her sister’s taste in men. Before she can find success in interior design Jasmine’s lack of funds force her to reluctantly take on a job as a receptionist, but when she encounters a diplomat, Dwight (Saarsgard), who falls for her, she begins to find some hope.

THE FIFTH ESTATE (15) Release Date – 14/02/2014 Political espionage thriller directed by Bill Condon and starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Australian publisher and journalist Julian Assange. The film shows how Assange and the others in his Wiki Leaks team have disclosed a large volume of state secrets and classified information through their website in the hopes of informing the public of their government’s true nature. Most notoriously, the group published a video of the indiscriminate killing of over a dozen people in Iraq by the US military in 2010 with the help of intelligence analyst-turned whistleblower Bradley Manning. But through this decision Assange and his colleagues were made enemies of the state and forced to consider whether their actions were justifiable or if the cost of full disclosure is too high...
