Shaun The Sheep

Date: Monday 3rd August 2015 /Tickets: €8.50; €7 Concession / CINEMA

Date: Saturday 15th August 2015 / Time: 2.00pm / Tickets: €5 / FAMILY MOVIE, CHILDREN

Ingrid is a young woman who has gone blind and is adjusting to her new condition in her apartment, where even making a cup of tea is a major undertaking. In order to keep her visual imagination fresh, she is writing a story in which fantasy and reality overlap, to the point where the audience becomes uncertain of what is real. This Norwegian film has attracted a lot of attention for the way it blends humour, insight, complexity and tension, keeping the audience gripped from start to finish without any sense of where it might be headed. Language: Norwegian (subtitled).

Vincent Van Gogh – A New Way of Seeing

When everyone’s favourite sheep, Shaun, attempts to free himself from another dull day on the farm it goes disastrously wrong, leaving the farmer lost in The Big City with amnesia. Baaaa-nding together with the rest of the flock (and that stickler for rules, Bitzer the Sheepdog), Shaun sets out to bring the farmer back home. To save the day they will need a little wool power and a lot of team work. Packed with that signature Aardman wit and charm that you’l know from Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep will have you rolling in your seat with laughter — so catch it if ewe can. Perfect for a family treat! Parents, pack up the kids and skip on down to Mermaid for a fun filled afternoon.

Date: Monday 31st August 2015 / Time: 8pm / Tickets: €8.50; €7 Concession/ CINEMA

This is a new film about one of the world’s favourite artists, marking both a major re-showing of the gallery’s collection and a celebration of the 125th anniversary of Van Gogh’s death. Experience the wonder of seeing these masterpieces on the big screen while specially invited guests, including world-renowned curators and art historians, offer their interpretations and explanations of his work. With exclusive new research revealing incredible recent discoveries, the Van Gogh Museum has helped craft a cinema experience like no other. Not to be missed.

Claire devastated by the death of her best friend, makes a promise to watch over her widowed husband and new-born child. Battling through a fog of depression and a lack of responsiveness from her own husband, she reluctantly drags herself to the plush suburban home of her friend’s widower only to make a startling discovery about the form his grief has taken. At first shocked and resistant, then progressively seduced, she ultimately finds expression for her own crippling anguish and repressed desires.

ituated in Glencullen on the top of the Dublin mountains, Jonnie Fox’s is one of Ireland’s oldest and most famous traditional Irish pubs – and also famed as the highest pub in the country. We are located approximately 25 -35 minutes drive from Dublin City Centre.

At Johnnie Fox’s we have Traditional Irish Music every night, including Saturday & Sunday afternoons. There are more well-known bands that play throughout the year on selected dates. You can also see one of the top dancing performances in the country at our famous ‘Hooley Night’ – which includes dinner & show. All in all, Fox’s is the home of traditional entertainment, so be sure to book in advance if you can. The locality itself is steeped in history with “The Colonel’s House” situated in Glencullen – reknown as a hideaway, for Michael Collins throughout Irish history books. Monoliths are plentiful and you can even view a “Giant’s Grave” on the scenic walks high atop the mountains. Daniel O’Connell, the great Irish Liberator was a regular patron of Johnnie Fox’s when he lived here in Glencullen. In 1823 Daniel O’Connell gave his blessing to Christy Fitzsimons – to marry his daughter, and to this day the family generation still reside in Glencullen. In the early 1950’s, programmes on Irish music an story telling were recorded for radio every Sunday night in Johnnie Fox’s and broadcast live to the nation, on location. In the 1960’s Johnnie Fox’s Pub was famous for the session – An Seisiun – travelling musicians would gather to play and trade songs with local people – a tradition which prevails to this present day with the music and song still emanating from the famous location, where song ban-

ter continuosly fills the airwaves. The Hooley Show – The “Johnnie Fox’s Hooley Experience” is famous throughout Ireland and abroad for its originality and unique atmosphere that cannot be found anywhere else. Our guests are invited to a four-course meal where they can savour our various award winning seafood dishes as well as our general cuisine. For non-seafood lovers, our menu’s offer many other alternatives, from Prime Sirloin Steak to vegetarian dishes – there are choices to suit every taste. The meal is followed by a live Irish music session where our top acts play Irish music, ranging from traditional and folk to ballads and sing along music. The music session is followed by the Johnnie Fox’s famous dancers, who provide a spectacular performance. Their show has been choreographed by Joey Comerford and has been described as one of the best ‘Cultural Shows’ in the country. The Whiskey cake is unique to Johnnie Fox’s, and as with all their desserts – everything is baked fresh on the premises in their very own bakery. So be prepared… and make sure you arrive on an empty stomach! The pub serves all manner of dishes, but is renowned for a variety of unique seafood dishes, take the Grand Platter @ €115 – will comfortably feed four people… and leave them with a smile on their face! Also, The Lovers Platter – a clever dish served with a selection of fresh succulent seafood and serves two, and not forgetting the house Mussels – the house special and favourite among the punters, which is presented on a unique serving dish. If you haven’t already sampled the experience the culinary delights of Johnny Fox’s – then you need to! Because you’re surely missing out.

The House and Gardens were built in 1697 by Thomas Acton I (1655 1750). The Acton Café was recently opened. Kilmacurragh is like a huge secret garden with a natural presence that feels untouched and preserved in the past. It is truly stunning, the views are breathtaking and the setting is so natural. There are ruins of the old house and out buildings scattered through the grounds and a fabulous stream and pond which is teeming with life. The natural meadows are a palate of colours splashed in all directions and the avenues of so many different trees are fabulous for photographs. Families, couples, hikers or just somewhere for an utterly relaxing walk or picnic. Kilmacurragh has everything for a stress free day out. The grounds are pet dog friendly once you’re prepared to keep them on a lead. Children friendly and safe once they’re watched by their folks (there is the pond) But most of all it is completely nature friendly and is certainly worth a visit.

Wicklow Lifeboats

A Lifetime of Service

by Mary DeCourcy

Wicklow Lifeboat Station stands proudly at the East Pier in Wicklow Town. Its solid stone built frontage bears witness to a history of saving lives at sea. It is unique in that it is the last slip launch lifeboat station in Ireland. The resident All Weather Lifeboat RNLB Annie Blaker will be retired soon after more than 25 years of loyal service. Inside, the station is small but meticulously tidy. The bright yellow crew kits are hanging in neat rows, jacket, helmet, boots and leggings (long Johns), each with its own dedicated crew name, ready to deploy at a moment’s notice should it be required.

I am talking to Second Coxswain, Ciarán Doyle about his time as volunteer crewman with more than thirty years’ service. Ciarán was recently awarded with a bar to his long service badge, in recognition of more than 30 years of active crew services. So, Ciarán, how did you first become involved with the RNLI? What age were you? I joined the crew when I was 19 years old; I had just left school and was working as a lifeguard in Wicklow Harbour. My activities were never far from the sea, swimming, scuba diving, fishing, boating. At the time the RNLI lifeboat fleet was being upgraded to a modern fast fleet and local crew member Eddie Doyle asked if I was interested in joining. Eddie’s words are still very vivid in my memory; ‘we need young lads for these new fast boats’. Do you remember the very first shout you attended as a qualified crewman? Yes, I was on the crew for about 6 months and my first call was on the JW Archer lifeboat, it was to a person in difficulties in the water near the Silver Strand. Fortunately our services were not required,

but it was a great feeling to be on the boat for the first time. That sense of excitement and exhilaration when the lifeboat is called out is still with me today. Were you ever really scared going to a shout? I can’t say I was ever scared, I have always had great confidence in the crew, the boat and our training. I can say I have been concerned once or twice. We had a shout to some canoeists off Magheramore Beach about 20 years ago, they were very close to shore and the Annie Blaker went close to capsizing in attempting to get to them. We also had a shout in 1983 where a number of crew members, myself included, sustained carbon monoxide poisoning due an electrical fire onboard the Lifeboat; you will have to buy my book to read more about that one! What is your most memorable shout? There is one that sticks out in my mind; it was a wind surfer who was in a very serious situation off Brittas Bay, it was winter time and due to equipment failure he was unable to get ashore. He later told us that he felt his life ebbing away and was getting to the point where he could no longer hold onto his sail board due to cold and exhaustion. Then just as he thought his time had come to an end he heard something, it was our engines and it gave him enough strength to hang on a little longer. That for me is what being a lifeboat crew member is all about. Did you ever ignore the pager due to tiredness or other distraction? Never! Can anyone join? Is it men only? Can women do

the same job? How many women are on crew in Wicklow Station? Crew membership is open to anyone above the age of 17, you need to be in good physical health and not colour blind. The modern lifeboat boat need all skills within its crew, so male and female all have a valuable role to play. We currently have two women on active service in our Station. Has the Service changed much since you joined? Very much so, and for the better; the big developments are in technology. Boats are faster, better equipped with excellent navigation and communications systems. The modern lifeboat provides much better casualty care and crew comforts than the older craft. Training has improved greatly also, there is now a lifeboat college and all crew members must attend regular training programs. How is the crew decided when there is a shout? The Coxswain has overall responsibility for picking the crew. When the pager goes off, everyone makes their way to the boathouse without delay. Depending on the nature of the shout, weather conditions, estimated sea time, etc., the Coxswain will pick the most suited crew for the job to be done. We always

try to bring one of the newer crew members also to assist in their ongoing training. Has the call-out frequency changed since you joined? Have people become more or less careful of their safety at sea? Yes, in my early days, call-outs were relatively infrequent, whereas since the arrival of the Annie Blaker in Wicklow in 1989 numbers have greatly increased. In fact the Annie Blaker has been on more service calls and rescued more people than all of other lifeboat that have been stationed at Wicklow since 1857.

When you have a traumatic rescue is there any support service for the crew? How is the trauma dealt with? The RNLI does have a counselling and support service should it be required after a particularly difficult service. The station also has a Medical Officer. There is also a very strong bond among crew members, very much a ‘watch out’ for each other mentality. Therefore, when the difficult events occur we ensure people talk and express their concerns and this would continue for a time after the callout.

Des Davitt (email: desdavitt@eirocm.net) and arrange for a chat, he will tell them about the services and its requirements. Training is ongoing and most weeks there is always something going on in the boat house or afloat in one of the two station lifeboats. The new recruits must attend a week long course in the Lifeboat College in Poole, Dorset, in the UK and do sea survival and basic seamanship training. They must also undergo a medical examination.

How does a person join the service? Is there much training involved in becoming a lifeboat crewman? Contact the station Lifeboat Operations Manager,

No crew member could be effective on the lifeboat without the full support and understanding of their partners and family at home. Many times my wife Marion has been left sitting on her own in Bars and Restaurants when the pager has gone off. Many planned family events have been curtailed, abandoned or delayed. Not to mention the hours spent every week at the boathouse, cleaning the boat, training and exercises. It is a lifetime commitment and it would not be possible without their backing.

Thank you, Ciarán for your time. Keep up the good work.

The people of Wicklow Town and County are staunch and proud supporters of their Lifeboats. We, on the Fundraising Branches thank you for organising events, making donations, and giving so generously to keep the service vibrant in Wicklow. We are always looking for new volunteers to help with fundraising. If you would like to give a little time or a lot of time, give me a call at the number below. We salute the men and women of the volunteer crews who give their time and commitment so willingly to saving lives at sea. Thank you.

For me, being a lifeboat crew member is a win-win; you get to feel that what you are doing is very worthwhile, it is giving something back; it is good Karma. To be honest, there is nothing a person can experience that is better than reaching your hand out to help someone who needs it. Of course, I would not be telling the full story if I didn’t mention ‘Boys and their Toys’; where else would you get to ‘play’ with such powerful and jaw-dropping equipment; the roar of the engines, the Adrenalin rush when the pager goes off and the excitement when gravity propels the lifeboat down the slip and into the unknown. Yep, it’s a Win-Win!

How is family life affected?

What keeps you motivated after all these years’ service? Why do you keep doing the job?

Why does the lifeboat rescue animals in trouble on the water? This is mainly because of the risk that their owners or other members of the public will try going in after them and causing a more serious situation. It also provides great training for newly recruited crew members.

Health & Beauty Protected & Amazing Summer Hair! Loreal Paris Range

TOP TIPS: Snip, Snip –

SUMMER IS HERE AND AS USUAL WE ALL START OBSESSING ABOUT THE LOOK OF OUR BODIES - LOSING WEIGHT OR TONING UP, OUR SKIN – MOISTURISING FOR THAT SILKY SMOOTH FEELING AND THAT EVER SO PERFECT TAN, OUR MAKE-UP SHADES GET LIGHTER AND OUR HAIR, WELL OUR HAIRS EITHER JUST GET THROWN BACK INTO A PONYTAIL, BUN OR JUST SCRUNCHED UP FOR A BEACH READY WAVE! But it is vital that we pay much better attention to our hair during the summer season, it is really not just as simple as throwing it up or scrunching it. Your hair also needs to be protected from this summer sun. Taking my own hair for example, my hair is dry all year round I have a natural frizz that seriously needs to be kept in check a lot of the time but I am guilty of just throwing it up in a messy bun rather than actually dealing with it on a daily basis and this goes against what my hair likes and needs all of the time! My roots are flat from the

pull back, my ends are coarse from being strangled by bands and my spilt ends are not even funny. So if you are anything like me, we need top tips to make sure along with everything else our hair is beach or summer ready for this gorgeous season.

Kerastase Hair Protection Range Kerastase Soleil2

It is hugely important for the health of your hair that you pay regular visits to the hairdressers. This does not mean a huge expense every 6 weeks or so it just means booking in with your hairdresser for a trim. Getting a trim ensures healthy hair and helps keep those dreaded split ends away.

Washing your hair – First thing first, find out which is the best shampoo and conditioner for your own hair type. Professionals at your local hair salon should be able to advice you if you are not sure yourself. Look out for products with the tags Replenishing, Hydrating and Moisturizing. Always keep in mind your ‘Scalp Type’ and your ‘Hair Type’ when shopping for the right products. Only apply shampoo to your scalp and massage gently. Work the shampoo down to the ends of your hair and rinse thoroughly.

Pantene Pro-V Moisture Renewal

You will feel like you need to shampoo your hair every day during the summer but washing every day could do more harm than good, too much shampoo can dry up your scalp and hair even more. Do not apply conditioner to your roots, apply to mid-length of your hair and work to your ends, leaving it to work for a minute or two (the longer the better). Or simply apply a leave in conditioner at night and rinse when you awake the next morning.

Stay Away –

BB Seaweed Shampoo & Conditioner

Wash your hair with hot/warm water but after your conditioner rinse with cool water this closes the cuticle sealing in moisture. When towel drying, it is important that you don’t scrub or rub your hair with the towel as you will only cause damage. Simply squeeze gently and when possible allow your hair to air dry. Treatments and Hair Masks are essential if you colour your hair or use any heat source to dry or style your hair on a daily basis. It is important when you have coloured hair to keep it extra protected especially in summer time. Sitting in the sun could cause your colour to fade and cause excessive hair dryness so why not try wrapping your hair in a scarf or wearing a hat? This not only provides extra UV Protection it also helpsRIGHT your FROM A YOUNG TEENAGER scalp to retain moisture.

THROUGH TO YOUR ELDER YEARS IT CANNOT BE STRESSED ENOUGH AS TO HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR US LADIES TO ‘CLEANSE, TONE & MOISTURIZE’.

As a vital part of our daily lives it is important for a number of reasons. A good daily skin care routine keeps your skin clean, hydrated, protected, healthy and glowing. And for this, it is important to make these 3 steps a regular feature in your day to day routine. Bumble & Bumble Surf Infusion Cleansing – For teenagers and young ladies is vital for maintaining a clear complexion and to avoid spots and or

The summer sun dries out our hair enough on its own, so during the day at least, do not reach for the hairsprays, waxes or gels. Instead opt for natural products that will keep your hair exactly where you want it but at the same time protect it from the sun.

Eden Hazard 2015/16 season are available and attention has already turned to the next installment. Can Chelsea retain their title? Will Manchester United continue their progress under Louis Van Gaal? Can Arsenal finally mount a genuine title challenge? It is these three teams, along with Manchester City, that are likely to make up the top four next season, and they could all be considered to have a realistic shot of winning the league. Most fans will be hoping for a far closer title race than last season, when Chelsea looked the likely winners with months still to go, and there’s a good chance that’s exactly what we’ll see. Chelsea will head to the new season with momentum on their side after capturing the league title in record fashion. The Blues led the Premier League table for a record 274 days last season, surpassing the 262-day mark set by Manchester United back in 1993-1994. Sergio Aguero rivals have restocked and reloaded for the upcoming season. Arsenal’s bid for a first Premier League title in 12 years got a major boost when they signed goalkeeper Petr Cech from their London rivals this past summer. It’s not just Arsenal who are making some noise in the transfer market this year. Both Manchester City and Manchester United are sparing no expense in their quest to regain the Premier League crown this season. The Citizens are expected to spend in excess of £100 million on new signings this summer after having their transfer restrictions lifted by UEFA.

Job Interview Tips Topstaff.ie are the hospitality specific recruitment agency, focused on helping great staff make the right career moves. To get in touch about finding suitable staff or making your next move.

10 Topstaff.ie interviewing tips: • Be fashionably early, not too early or late! Arriving 10 minutes before the interview is perfect. • Focus on presentation. Look professional and don’t let any fashion choice take away from your chances of securing a job. • Research the business! Always have a thorough understanding of all areas of

the business without needing to be told. • Ensure you are familiar with your CV and all claims in it are accurate. Your CV should never trip you up and should always be honest. • Make sure your body language is positive; sit upright, engaging and professional – never look lazy! • Make eye contact! Often interviewers will be put off if a candidate fails to make eye contact.

• Always show up! If you can’t make it for any reason give plenty of notice so you may be able to rearrange. • Avoid complaining about former employers. • Have a positive attitude. Focus on what you can do instead of what you’ll struggle to. • When answering a question, give examples and integrate past experience.

Topstaff.ie guide to writing a CV For employers, they often receive a number of applications for positions that they advertise. The more applications that come through, the less time the employer will have to focus on each CV. With that in mind, it is important to make the content of your CV stand out. You don’t need a fancy design, you just need to list why you are a good choice for the position and how you have proved this in the past. Be sure to keep everything in your CV relevant and ensure that it looks easy on the eye.

Tips for writing the CV: • Chronologically, List most recent experience first and work your way down from there. • Sometimes less is more. Keep it to two or three (if required) pages if possible. • Be consistent with the formatting. • Don’t go into anything too much or use slang – keep it professional! • Check over your spelling and grammar – then double check it! If it’s not your strong point, have somebody else look over it. • Remember – the CV should tell the employer how good you are! Remember to include examples of where you exceeded expectations, used initiative, performed exceptionally etc. • If you insist on using a picture on your CV, please ensure it is professional. • Review your CV and make sure it reflects you in a positive light. • Including a short personal statement can work well. • Ensure your CV is current.
