Set in the wild Wicklow countryside, overlooking the Sugarloaf Mountain, Powerscourt Gardens stretch over 47 acres and offer magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. Powerscourt Gardens was voted No.3 in the world’s top ten gardens by National Geographic. The design of Powerscourt gardens was influenced
by the seventh Lord Powerscourt’s visits to famous estates including the Chateau de Versailles in Paris. Unique features include the Japanese garden which offers a maze of walkways and hidden grottos and the largest Pet Cemetery in Ireland. Enjoy the sight and perfume of Azaleas, Japanese Maples and Chinese Fortune Palms. The grotto is one of the oldest features of Powerscourt Gardens and offers secret pathways to explore and an air of 18th century romance. The Italian Garden at Powerscourt truly offers the best of garden landscaping and design. The terraces in the garden were designed in the 1840’s by architect Daniel Robertson and took 100 men over 12 years to build! Enjoy exciting sculptures of Gods and myths including statues of Apollo Belvedere and Diana, collected by the 6th and 7th Lords’ Powerscourt on their travels to Europe. The walled gardens are one of the oldest parts of the gardens and feature fascinating plants along Ireland’s largest herbaceous border. Here you will see ‘Julia’s Memorial,’ a calm reflective pond built in honour of the 7th Viscountess by her son. Enjoy the vibrant colours and beautiful scents of the Rose garden. Don’t miss the 240 year old Bamberg Gate which came from the Cathedral at Bamberg in Germany.

ituated in Glencullen on the top of the Dublin mountains, Johnnie Fox’s is one of Ireland’s oldest and most famous traditional Irish pubs – and also famed as the highest pub in the country. We are located approximately 25 -35 minutes drive from Dublin City Centre.
At Johnnie Fox’s we have Traditional Irish Music every night, including Saturday & Sunday afternoons. You can also see one of the top dancing performances in the country at our famous ‘Hooley Night’ – which includes dinner & show. All in all, Fox’s is the home of traditional entertainment, so be sure to book in advance if you can. The locality itself is steeped in history with “The Colonel’s House” situated in Glencullen – known as a hideaway, for Michael Collins throughout Irish history books. Monoliths are plentiful and you can even view a “Giant’s Grave” on the scenic walks high atop the mountains. Daniel O’Connell, the great Irish Liberator was a regular patron of Johnnie Fox’s when he lived here in Glencullen. In 1823 Daniel O’Connell gave his blessing to Christy Fitzsimons – to marry his daughter, and to this day the family generation still reside in Glencullen. In the early 1950’s, programmes on Irish music a story telling were recorded for radio every Sunday night in Johnnie Fox’s and broadcast live to the nation, on location. In the 1960’s Johnnie Fox’s Pub was famous for – An Seisiun – travelling musicians would gather to play and trade songs with local people – a tradition which prevails to this present day with the music and song still emanating from the famous
location, where song banter continuosly fills the airwaves. The Hooley Show – The “Johnnie Fox’s Hooley Experience” is famous throughout Ireland and abroad for its originality and unique atmosphere that cannot be found anywhere else. Our guests are invited to a fourcourse meal where they can savour our various award winning seafood dishes as well as our general cuisine. For non-seafood lovers, our menu’s offer many other alternatives, from Prime Sirloin Steak to vegetarian dishes – there are choices to suit every taste. The meal is followed by a live Irish music session where our top acts play Irish music, ranging from traditional and folk to ballads and sing along music. The music session is followed by the Johnnie Fox’s famous dancers, who provide a spectacular performance. Their show has been choreographed by Joey Comerford and has been described as one of the best ‘Cultural Shows’ in the country. The Whiskey cake is unique to Johnnie Fox’s, and as with all their desserts, everything is baked fresh on the premises in their very own bakery. So be prepared… and make sure you arrive on an empty stomach! The pub serves all manner of dishes, but is renowned for a variety of unique seafood dishes, take the Grand Platter @ €125 – will comfortably feed four people… and leave them with a smile on their face! Also, The Lovers Platter – a clever dish served with a selection of fresh succulent seafood and serves two, and not forgetting the house Mussels – the house special and favourite among the punters, which is presented on a unique serving dish. If you haven’t already sampled the experience the culinary delights of Johnny Fox’s – then you need to! Because you’re surely missing out.

Break Bad Habits Now...Instead of stocking your fridge or press with quick go to snacks like crisps, sweets and chocolate etc. stock your kitchen with fresh fruit and vegetables, we all know this don't we? And yes, sometimes it's easier said than done BUT with the right healthy snacks we will win this 'food on demand' battle and those little bellies will be satisfied for longer...

Summer Gardening

t is important during summer when your plants and shrubs are actively growing to keep them fed. Most plants will suffice with a general purpose tomato feed but some plants such as Camellia, Pieris, Azalea etc.. require an acidic soil so plant specific slow release fertilizers are the way to go here.
• Foliage based plants I would always recommend using a liquid sea weed feed or Comfrey if available. Your borders will appreciate a fed every fortnight during growing season. Plants growing in pots and hanging baskets should be fed weekly to keep them looking their best.
• Make sure to continuously dead head Roses and flowering perennials to encourage repeat flowering.

• Keep on top of weeds. It is important not to allow your perennial weeds to go to seed to save yourself years of pulling their offspring! Regular weeding will make it easier as they won’t have a chance to develop a large roof system such as tap roots in Dandelions. • If planting at this time of year keep an eye out for the nectar rich varieties to help out your local neighborhood pollinators. Once you have planted be sure to water in well! • Stake any tall perennials to prevent damage to the plant and surrounding planting. This will keep them upright and looking their best in the borders. • Be sure to keep your border edges trimmed as this will enhance the appearance of the garden during those lazy summer days.
Tel: 087 – 2991932 Email: info@richardshortall.ie
• Now is a good time to clip that boundary hedge. Any nesting birds have fledged so there will be minimal risk to garden wildlife by doing this now. I would recommend not being to drastic but should it be called for then I would always follow up with a good feed to help reduce the shock to the plant.
• Keep your bird feeders loaded and don’t forget to clean them once and while to reduce bacteria build up.
• Keep your lawnmower a level higher than you would’ve in Spring to be sure not to cut the lawn too tight. This will protect the lawn should we get a prolonged dry spell (here’s hoping!) Should you feel that feeding is necessary then refrain from applying fertilizers until the soil is moist after a good prolonged down pour.
Abwood Homes is a Wicklow based company which was founded in 1985 by George Smullen. Initially concentrating on garden sheds and timber fencing Abwood Homes soon became the market leader. Continuous expansion has seen the company move into other areas such as timber housing, home offices, garden studios, etc. The company now supplies a vast array of timber, fencing and decking products to cater for both the trade and retail market. Using computerised woodworking machinery, Abwood Homes manufactures its distinctive range of tim-
ber buildings, sheds, fencing and other timber products at its factory at Knocklow, Tullow, Co Carlow. This is also the base for the production of concrete fencing posts, panels and associated products.

Mid-summer Lawns by Malachy Doherty CountryLife Dungarvan
Many of you would have treated your lawns back in Spring, normally these treatments work for two to three months so now is a good time to look at giving your lawn some TLC to see it through to September. If you use a lawnmower that collects grass clipping rather than mulching I recommend applying a midsummer feed. If you constantly collect the clippings you are not returning any nutrients to soil so it is best to apply some sort of feed to give the lawn a boost. One product to consider using is Mo Bacter Universal Lawn Feed from Viano. It contains a slow release fertiliser which feeds lawns for up to two months and it controls moss. Generally around 10 days after application you will notice your lawn looks considerably greener and healthier. The product is organic which means it is safe for pets to go back out on the lawn after it has been applied.

Maintaining & Improving your home As the majority of us know by now engaging with tradespeople can be a bit of a minefield and for some the sheer thought of looking for a tradesperson can be terrifying!… Who do I call?...How do I know they are the right person for the job? ….What if they do a bad job, what then? work and refurbishment your property may need. In terms of property maintenance ReliableTradesmen.ie would always advocate that little often is better than a once off major job. Keeping your property in good condition helps your property maintain its value and that all important curb appeal!
Such reservations can lead to a relative minor problem becoming a very costly issue. Most people will build good relationships with their individual tradespeople over time off the back of some bad eggs doing questionable work. With ReliableTradesmen.ie you will be building a strong relationship with not only one individual but with a strong network of reputable and trustworthy tradespeople to take care of any maintenance issue or building
From a landlords point of view, keeping your property in good shape will provide a safe, habitable living environment – which tenants are legally entitled to. Regular maintenance and upkeep will also keep the costs down on tidying up the property should a lease expire and a new tenant be needed.

Summer Home Maintaining & Improving Tips • Check in Summer for potential repairs that will lead to problems in Winter such as guttering servicing and repairs. Roof inspections on older properties are always worth doing to identify any issues that could lead to internal damage down the line. • Check any exposed water mains pipe work and insulate them if needed to prevent freezing in the depths of Winter.
checklist and carry out regular inspections. Time after time we have seen small issues develop into big costly ones due the fact that tenants have or haven’t seen a small issue developing. This problems are legally binding to be sorted out so the sooner they are identified the better. • Service regularly boilers, cookers and fireplaces to keep them efficient, functioning correctly and most importantly safe! • Keep on top of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. Check regularly. • Act quickly! This is the most important tip of all. Don’t be tempted to let a problem fester in order to save money. The problem won’t go away and will only cost you more in the long run. From a Letting Agent / landlord point of view it is a sound idea to create a

Health & Beauty Protected & Amazing Summer Hair! Summer is here and as usual we all start obsessing about the look of our bodies - losing weight or toning up, our skin – moisturising for that silky smooth feeling and that ever so perfect tan, our make-up shades get lighter and our hair, well our hairs either just get thrown back into a ponytail, bun or just scrunched up for a beach ready wave! But it is vital that we pay much better attention to our hair during the summer season, it is really not just as simple as throwing it up or scrunching it. Your hair also needs to be protected from this summer sun.
Taking my own hair for example, my hair is dry all year round I have a natural frizz that seriously needs to be kept in check a lot of the time but I am guilty of just throwing it up in a messy bun rather than actually dealing with it on a daily basis and this goes against what my hair likes and needs all of the time! My roots are flat from the pull back, my ends are coarse from being strangled by bands and my spilt ends are not even funny. So if you are anything like me, we need top tips to make sure along with everything else our hair is beach or summer ready for this gorgeous season.

First thing first, find out which is the best shampoo and conditioner for your own hair type. Professionals at your local hair salon should be able to advice you if you are not sure yourself. Look out for products with the tags Replenishing, Hydrating and Moisturizing. Always keep in mind your ‘Scalp Type’ and your ‘Hair Type’ when shopping for the right products. Only apply shampoo to your scalp and massage gently. Work the shampoo down
Top Tips: Snip, Snip – It is hugely important for the health of your hair that you pay regular visits to the hairdressers. This does not mean a huge expense every 6 weeks or so it just means booking in with your hairdresser for a trim. Getting a trim ensures healthy hair and helps keep those dreaded split ends away.

Wash your hair with hot/warm water but after your conditioner rinse with cool water this closes the cuticle sealing in moisture. When towel drying, it is important that you don’t scrub or rub your hair with the towel as you will only cause damage. Simply squeeze gently and when possible allow your hair to air dry. Treatments and Hair Masks are essential if you colour your hair or use any heat source to dry or style your hair on a daily basis. It is important when you have coloured hair to keep it extra protected especially in summer time. Sitting in the sun could cause your colour to fade and cause excessive hair dryness so why not try wrapping your hair in a scarf or wearing a hat? Using a tiny bit of coconut oil or shea butter can smooth and defrizz your hair. They are natural products that will do no damage to your hair and will actually keep your hair moisturized so you’ll lessen the chance of extra sun damage. If you are going for a swim, remember to put on a leave-in conditioner on your hair and wear a swimming cap if possible. Also when your hair is wet avoid pulling anything through it, using a wide tooth comb is most gentle when untangling the hair as brushes can pull and tear when they snag the ends of your hair.

Comfortable Styles – Advoiding hair dryers, hot irons etc... where possible is great but we still need to keep the frizz at bay. Using the coconut oil or shea butter can create the most beautiful natural airdried curls for a wavy beach look. For different looks a messy braid is ideal for keeping frizz under control and also helps to minimize full sun exposure. Try and avoid where possible, pulling your hair into a tight up-style as they can damage your hair by pulling and tearing and especially if your hair is already dry from summer heat, that’s the last thing you’ll need.

The welterweight title is up for grabs… Champion Lawler (27-10, 1 NC) is coming off a thrilling split decision win over Carlos Condit at UFC 195 in January. As we pass the halfway point of 2016, it holds up as one of the best fights of the year. His previous title defense was an alltime classic vs. Rory MacDonald at UFC 189, a fight which he won by 5th round TKO while behind on the scorecards. Woodley (15-3) hasn’t fought since a split decision win vs. an overweight and ill Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 183. Woodley’s biggest wins are a knockout of Dong Hyun Kim, an injury TKO vs. Carlos Condit, and a vicious one-punch KO of Josh Koscheck. He’ll be coming off an 18 month layoff when he enters the cage against Lawler.
Demetrious Johnson Vs Wilson Reis UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson will defend his title against Brazil’s Wilson Reis, in the co-main event of UFC 201. Johnson (24-2-1) quickly destroyed the previously unbeaten Henry Cejudo in the co-main event of UFC 197 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mighty Mouse has a 10-0-1 record at 125 lbs, and is a perfect 8-0 in defenses of his title. He’s finished 5 of his last 7 fights en route to #2 pound-for-pound status in the UFC rankings, behind only Jon Jones

From earlier greats such as Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen through modern legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Seve Ballesteros to exceptional talents of today Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy, the greatest players in the world have faced the unrelenting challenge of The Open. *Worth a small outside bet – Louis Oosthuizen, Phil Mickelson or Rickie Fowler.

A GAME OF THRONES is the first volume in the series. Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun. As Warden of the north, Lord Eddard Stark counts it a curse when King Robert bestows on him the office of the Hand. His honour weighs him down at court where a true man does what he will, not what he must ...and a dead enemy is a thing of beauty. The old gods have no power in the south, Stark’s family is split and there is treachery at court. Worse, the vengeance-mad heir of the deposed Dragon King has grown to maturity in exile in the Free Cities. He claims the Iron Throne.

After years of combat in Vietnam, Lincoln Clay knows this truth: family isn’t who you’re born with, it’s who you die for. When his surrogate family, the black mob, is betrayed and wiped out by the Italian Mafia, Lincoln builds a new family on the ashes of the old and blazes a path of military-grade revenge and redemption through the Mafioso responsible. Tickets: 40.50EUR / Doors: 6.30pm / Date: 22nd November 2016 / Dublin 3 Arena
In 2015, Jess Glynne’s debut album ‘I Cry When I Laugh’ became the biggest selling debut of the year. Going platinum in the UK in only 10 weeks, being one of only two British female solo artists to have five consecutive UK number one singles. ‘I Cry When I Laugh’ features all her hit singles ‘Right Here, ‘Hold My Hand’, ‘Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself’ Jess describes the day that she signed her record contract as ‘the happiest and saddest day of my life.’ Professionally, she had come of age, earning the respect of an industry she’d fought long and hard to win a place in. Here was the proof that her talent for singing, songwriting and performance were ready for their close-up. Personally, she was in pieces, broken-hearted from a two-year relationship that made her question everyone and everything.
Simply Red - 25 years of Stars Live Tickets: 55.65EUR / Doors: 6.30pm / Date: 11th November 2016 / Dublin 3 Arena
Following a triumphant return to Ireland last year with an unforgettable 3Arena show, Simply Red take their classic album ‘Stars’ on the road this November in what will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the year. The first half of this special show will feature the entire ‘Stars’ album in it’s original running order while the second half of the show will feature hits and classic Simply Red songs. ‘Stars’ was released on September 30th, 1991 and was the best selling UK album for two consecutive years, 1991 and 1992, a feat that hasn’t been repeated since. It was their 4th album and the first to feature a collection of songs written entirely by Mick Hucknall for which he received an Ivor Novello award for Best Songwriter of the Year in 1991 in addition to a Brit Award for Best British Band that same year. “After the huge success of ‘A New Flame’, I set myself the challenge of composing a whole album of original songs,” Mick Hucknall recalls. “I could never have imagined that ‘Stars’ would have the impact it did. It was a truly magical time. Now, looking on after 25 years, it seems only fitting to celebrate by performing the album in the original running order.”
Paul Simon Tickets: 76.0096.00-121.00EUR / Doors: 6.30pm / Date: 21st November 2016 / Dublin 3 Arena

Tickets for the Dublin Show go on sale Thursday 26 May at 9am from all usual outlets. Full of thrilling, imaginative textures, ‘Stranger to Stranger’ – Paul’s 13th solo album – conjures a vivid and vital new context to his well-established virtuosity as a singer and songwriter.
