Round Ireland Sailfest 2014

The Round Ireland Yacht Race is the longest race in the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) calendar, comparable to similar Offshore Races such as the Fastnet, Malta Middle Sea, Sydney-Hobart and China Sea races. The first race took place in 1980 with only thirteen boats. Since then, held biannually, the fleet has grown steadily, and in the or-

der of 60 yachts are expected to participate this year. Sailing around Ireland poses many challenges for boats and crew, with open ocean on the south and west coasts, tidal challenges on north and east coasts apart from all the off lying rocks and sandbanks to keep navigators on their toes and not forgetting the vagaries of the Atlantic weather systems. This is very much a sailors race but armchair spectators can follow the race on their computers, thanks to our modern race tracker technology. The Round Ireland Yacht Race Sailfest will complement the race preparations and add a welcome level of fun and entertainment for all coming down to Wicklow Town for the race start! For info visit: www.roundirelandsailfest.ie

ituated in Glencullen on the top of the Dublin mountains, Jonnie Fox’s is one of Ireland’s oldest and most famous traditional Irish pubs – and also famed as the highest pub in the country. We are located approximately 25 -35 minutes drive from Dublin City Centre.

At Johnnie Fox’s we have Traditional Irish Music every night, including Saturday & Sunday afternoons. There are more wellknown bands that play throughout the year on selected dates. You can also see one of the top dancing performances in the country at our famous ‘Hooley Night’ – which includes dinner & show. All in all, Fox’s is the home of traditional entertainment, so be sure to book in advance if you can. The locality itself is steeped in history with “The Colonel’s House” situated in Glencullen – reknown as a hideaway, for Michael Collins throughout Irish history books. Monoliths are plentiful and you can even view a “Giant’s Grave” on the scenic walks high atop the mountains. Daniel O’Connell, the great Irish Liberator was a regular patron of Johnnie Fox’s when he lived here in Glencullen. In 1823 Daniel O’Connell gave his blessing to Christy Fitzsimons – to marry his daughter, and to this day the family generation still reside in Glencullen. In the early 1950’s, programmes on Irish music an story telling were recorded for radio every Sunday night in Johnnie Fox’s and broadcast live to the nation, on location. In the 1960’s Johnnie Fox’s Pub was famous for the session – An Seisiun – travelling musicians would gather to play and trade songs with local people – a tradition which prevails to this present day with the music and song still emanating from

the famous location, where song banter continuosly fills the airwaves. The Hooley Show – The “Johnnie Fox’s Hooley Experience” is famous throughout Ireland and abroad for its originality and unique atmosphere that cannot be found anywhere else. Our guests are invited to a four-course meal where they can savour our various award winning seafood dishes as well as our general cuisine. For non-seafood lovers, our menu’s offer many other alternatives, from Prime Sirloin Steak to vegetarian dishes – there are choices to suit every taste. The meal is followed by a live Irish music session where our top acts play Irish music, ranging from traditional and folk to ballads and sing along music. The music session is followed by the Johnnie Fox’s famous dancers, who provide a spectacular performance. Their show has been choreographed by Joey Comerford and has been described as one of the best ‘Cultural Shows’ in the country. The Whiskey cake is unique to Johnnie Fox’s, and as with all their desserts – everything is baked fresh on the premises in their very own bakery. So be prepared… and make sure you arrive on an empty stomach! The pub serves all manner of dishes, but is renowned for a variety of unique seafood dishes, take the Grand Platter @ €115 – will comfortably feed four people… and leave them with a smile on their face! Also, The Lovers Platter – a clever dish served with a selection of fresh succulent seafood and serves two, and not forgetting the house Mussels – the house special and favourite among the punters, which is presented on a unique serving dish. If you haven’t already sampled the experience the culinary delights of Johnny Fox’s – then you need to! Because you’re surely missing out.

T

he Round Ireland Yacht Race is Ireland’s premier offshore sailing race and is held every two years by Wicklow Sailing Club in association with the Royal Ocean Racing Club. The 704 nautical mile race was first held in 1980 and still retains the original course; “leave Ireland and all its islands excluding Rockall to starboard.” The next edition of the race will take place on 28th June 2014. The concept of a race around Ireland began in 1975 with a double-handed race starting and finishing in Bangor by Ballyholme Yacht Club with stopovers in Crosshaven and Killybegs. That race only had four entries. In 1980 Michael Jones put forward the idea of a non-stop race and was held in that year from Wicklow Sailing Club. 16 pioneers entered that race with Brian Coad’s Raasay of Melfort returning home after six days at sea to win the inaugural race. While Raasay has the honour of being the winner of the first Round Ireland she was also the last placed finisher in four separate races (1982, 1984, 1990 and 1992). The race is uniquely identified by a series of

waypoints around the Irish coast at which the competitors much report their position and time. While the introduction of GPS tracking in 2008 provides competitors and followers with up-to-date progress of the fleet, the check-in waypoints are a key feature to stay up-to-date on progress, giving competitors morale boosting race milestones and, most importantly, are an important safety element of the race.

27 th – 29 th

June

The Round Ireland record is held by Mike Slade’s ICAP Leopard. In 2008, a race dominated by gale force winds, the 100 foot super maxi finished the race in just under two days and 18 hours, knocking over 10 hours off the previous race record, set in 1998 by Colm Barrington onboard Jeep Cherokee. The record currently stands at 65 hrs 48 mins 47 secs. The Round Ireland continues to be a big race run by a small club and for the competitors who return year after year, this is what makes the event so special. The warm greeting and round the clock bar service when returning to Wicklow bring competitors back to the race year after year.

Wimbledon Tennis Championships June 23rd – July 7th

Andy Murray

The Wimbledon Championships, officially called “The Lawn Tennis Championships”, is the oldest and arguably most prestigious event in the sport of tennis. It is held annually at the All England Club in Wimbledon, a suburb of London, in June or July every year. The tournament starts 6 weeks before the first Monday in August, and lasts for two weeks subject to extensions for rain. The tournament is the third Tennis Grand Slam event played each year, preceded by the Australian Open and the French Open, and followed by the U.S. Open. Wimbledon 2014 will take place from 23rd June to 6th July.

July 2014

Last year’s Wimbledon Men’s Singles tennis tournament was won by Andy Murray, who beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the final. Murray is well fancied to retain his crown in 2014 but he is likely to face a stiff challenge from Djokovic, while the likes of Rafael Nadal (French Open Winner 2014) and Roger Federer are unlikely to be too far away. The Women’s Singles is a tough one to call as the top seeds are unlikely to crash out as early as they did last year but Sabine Lisicki clearly excels on grass and is massive eachway value at 20/1.

PDC WORLD MATCHPLAY Sat 19th – Sun 27th July The World Matchplay has been played annually since 1994 in the Empress Ballroom at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool. The first ever winner was Larry Butler, who beat Dennis Priestley 16-12, and the current holder is Phil Taylor. It is regarded as the second biggest PDC Tournament, status shown by the fact the whole tournament was sold out within three days of the tickets being on sale. The 1995 World Matchplay turned out to be Jocky Wilson’s last appearance in a major televised event. Wilson had reached the

Fifa World Cup 2014 Brazil

quarter-finals of the inaugural tournament in 1994 and he beat Rod Harrington in the 1st round in 1995, but a 2nd round defeat against Nigel Justice was effectively the end of his career. Before the 2013 World Matchplay matches in the tournament must have been won by two clear legs. For example the first round was usually played over the first to 10 legs, but if the score reached 9-9, play continued until either player gained a two leg lead. As of the 2013 tournament if a two leg lead hadn’t been established after five extra legs then a tie-break leg was played.

Over the course of the tournaments 20 year existence, there have only been six different winners: Phil Taylor (14), Larry Butler (1), Peter Evison (1), Rod Harrington (2), Colin Lloyd (1) and James Wade (1)

THE BRITISH OPEN Thur July 17th – Sun 20th The British Open’s official title is the Open Championship. However, it is referred to as the British Open to distinguish it from the US Open. The British Open is the oldest of the four Majors, dating back to the 1860s. The tournament will be held at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake Merseyside England, from July 17th –20th 2014. The 2013 Open Championship was won by Phil Mickelson who shot a final round of 66 to win on three under par by three shots to Sweden’s Henrik Stenson. Leader going into the final round Lee Westwood could only shoot a 75 to finish tied for third alongside Adam Scott and Ian Poulter, with Tiger Woods a further shot back tied for 6th. No surprises here as Tiger Woods is the No. 1 golfer in the world and won the British Open last time it was at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake - he should be the favorite for the 2014 Open and he is. The more interesting thing is who is the second favorite. Favorite: Tiger Woods: 11-2 / Other fa-

Tiger Woods vorites: Phil Mickelson: 14-1 & Adam Scott: 16-1 Fringe favorites: Justin Rose: 22-1, Rory McIlroy: 22-1, Lee Westwood: 25-1, Graeme McDowell: 28-1, Henrik Stenson: 28-1, Charl Schwartzel: 33-1, Jason Day: 33-1, Luke Donald: 33-1, Sergio Garcia: 33-1

months later he crushed Max Holloway but, in doing so, he tore his ACL. His fight against Brazilian Diego Brandau on July 19 in the Dublin arena will only be his third match at the Featherweight division of UFC but he is already being tipped for the belt over the next 18 months. UFC owner Dana White is a huge fan of the Drimnagh brawler and many believe that he is the future of the sport. His appearances on talk shows on both sides of the Atlantic have built him up massive support despite only having two pro UFC fights on his CV. One thing that is for sure is that there will be 10,000 screaming Irish fans supporting the star on his big night.

Conor McGregor UFC fight in Dublin’s O2 Saturday, July 19th The highly-anticipated UFC fight night at Dublin’s O2 sold out in minutes, proving the sport is becoming one of the most popular spectator events in the country. Headlining the sell-out night is Dublin’s Conor McGregor, known by his fans as Notorious, who become a household name here. In April 2013 McGregor defeated Marcus Brimage in his first UFC bout.
