Walk the Line is a fund-raising event for the Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team and takes place on Saturday 28th March 2015, starting mid afternoon and running in to the night. The event consists of two route options; a 30Km loop to the Hell fire Club from Lamb Doyles and back or the shorter 15Km Lamb Doyles to Hell Fire club, with a shuttle bus to bring you back to Lamb Doyles. “Walk the Line” aims to cater for both the seasoned hill-walkers and also those walkers who want to give the hills a try with a super route around the Dublin Mountains. News & Events The best view of the garden After walking through Tower Valley you will reach Lord Londonderry’s stone seat, perched high above the Japanese Garden. This spot was a favourite retreat of Lord Londonderry, and you can enjoy the same views he did, many years ago. The Japanese Garden was laid out over 100 years ago in 1908 by the 8th Viscount and Viscountess Powerscourt on reclaimed bogland to the south of Triton Lake.
The symbolism of the garden The Japanese Garden looks wonderful in spring when the azaleas are in full bloom and their blossoms perfume the air, and in autumn with the vibrant colours of the Japanese maples. Stone lanterns guide you through the winding paths of the garden, bringing you to its innermost circle. Here you will find a Pagoda and a trickling stream under pretty Japanese bridges. The next circle is marked by a ring of Chinese Fortune Palms, which have been cultivated in China and Japan for thousands of years and were first brought to
A peaceful and tranquil oriental garden @ Powerscourt
Europe in 1830. The upper circle provides stunning views of the Japanese Garden and the Sugar Loaf Mountain in the distance. There is a beautiful concept behind each of these circles: working inwards, we discover our inner selves; working outwards and upwards we gain greater knowledge of the world around us.
The Grotto Take your loved one and go to one of the oldest features of Powerscourt gardens, next to the Japanese Garden. This is an elaborate grotto dating from the 1st Viscount’s garden in
1740. An air of 18th century romance still pervades here, with its secret pathways and romantic atmosphere. The grotto is made from fossilized sphagnum moss, taken from the banks of the nearby river Dargle. Listen to the sounds of water trickling down the grotto’s moss covered walls – it is truly refreshing! Before you leave the Japanese garden, toss a coin into the wishing well for good luck!

MUSIC COMPETITION Colaiste Bhride Carnew Create Environmental Anthem to Compete in The PURE Music Competition. Students from Colaiste Bhride Carnew are the latest Wicklow Secondary School now competing in a new Environmental Music Programme established by the Pure (Protecting Uplands and Rural Environments) Project, entitled, PURE MUSIC, which is offering young Wicklow musicians the opportunity of winning a professional recording session to record their original music composition. Pure Music Environmental Training Programme is a two day environmental/music training programme that introduces par-

ticipants to important environmental issues that are related to The Pure Project, e.g., illegal dumping, litter, fly-tipping, recycling, pollution, environment, all through the medium of music. Then with the guidance of the Pure Project, and in collaboration with professional musicians, Muso, participants learn about song writing, music composition and music production, culminating in the creation and recording of an original song. Each song also includes an accompanying music video documenting the students’ progression during the training programme, the concept development stages, lyric writing, rehearsals, performance, and recording session.
Two secondary schools from county Wicklow, Gaelcholaiste na Mara in Arklow, and Colaiste Bhride in Carnew, have already penned their new songs and along with another four schools from South Dublin and DunLaoghaire they will be vying for the prize of one a day professional recording session at the Temple Lane Studios in Dublin where acts such as, Snow Patrol, Kanye West, Rihanna and Morrisey have recorded. The Colaiste Bhride music track, ‘We’re Throwing Their Lives Away’, went live on the PURE website last week and within 24 hours had 2,000 views. Commenting on Pure Music Ian Davis of Pure stated: ‘Pure Music has already been a great success but we wanted to add another dimension to the programme. The competition involves six schools writing six original music tracks based on Environmental Themes. The winning song/video will be based on 2 aspects, the group who gets
the most hits/views, but also the judge’s decision. Funded by The Department of Environment Community and Local Government PURE was established to combat illegal dumping/ fly-tipping in the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands. The project was officially launched in September 2006. Since the establishment of the PURE project, the lo-call-phone-line 1850 365 121, and the PURE office, have received over 6,600 reports of illegal dumping resulting in the collection over 6,400 individual dumping sites and the removal of approximately 2,188 tonnes of rubbish from the landscape. If you were to put all of this rubbish into standard household rubbish bags you would fill over 311,000 bags. If you lined up each of the bags that PURE has removed from the uplands they would stretch over 300 kilometres in length, which is longer than a journey from Glendalough to Cork City. The project also established a number of initiatives to create awakenings of illegal dumping. One such project is The PURE Mile competition which encourages communities in Wicklow to keep a mile stretch of road (approx. 1.6 km), and the immediate environment litter/rubbish free. At present over 30 communities and people living in rural areas are extremely busy cleaning up their areas, taking part in regular litter picks and cleanups, researching information about their local wild flowers, plants, trees, animals, built heritage, history and the folklore associated with their areas. A large number of communities go the extra mile by repairing and painting old traditional gates, rebuilding stone walls, improving stiles, maintaining bridges, cleaning up farmlands and entrances, erecting bat and bird boxes, and holding information nights and talks about their local areas. 2014 is the fifth year of the PURE Mile competition and now over 70 communities and groups have taken part. Each of the PURE Miles has something unique to offer and in the past the competition has seen a variety of discoveries, from megalithic tombs, standing stones, ogham stones, mass rocks, freshly painted gates, new fencing erected, Celtic calendars, forgotten milk stands, recording of field names, local stories – legends and characters, historical buildings, churches, information on wild flowers – edible plants and foraging, old and new culinary recipes, information on forgotten archaeological
The PURE project is a partnership project and the first of its kind in Ireland which incorporates statutory and non-statutory organisations, including; Wicklow County Council, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, South Dublin County Council, Coillte, National Parks & Wildlife Service and the Wicklow Uplands Council. features and cultural heritage of areas, and of course all litter free roads, ditches, rivers and fields, which resulted in the removal of hundreds of bags of rubbish. PURE also run two extremely successful secondary school training programmes, PURE ANIMATION AND PURE MUSIC. These training programme introduce teenagers to important environmental issues that are related to The PURE Project, e.g., illegal dumping, litter, fly-tipping, recycling, pol-
lution, etc., all done through the medium of animation and music. To date Pure Animation has produced 16 short animated films screening at both national and international film festivals, including; Cork, Limerick, Dublin, California, Corfu, London, New York, Poland, winning numerous awards a long the way.

Hot Cross Buns (makes 12)
Method:
Easter Recipes
1. For the buns: Sieve the flour, salt and ground mixed spice into a large mixing bowl, then rub in the butter using your fingertips. Make a well in the centre of the mixture then add the sugar and lemon zest and yeast. 2. Beat the egg and add to the flour with the tepid milk. Mix together to a form a soft pliable dough.
Ingredients: • 625g/ 1lb 4 oz of Strong White Flour (plus extra for dusting) • 1 tsp salt • 2 tsp ground mixed spice • 50g/2oz butter, cut into cubes, plus extra for greasing • 75g/3oz sugar Rind of 1 lemon • 1 sachet fast-action yeast (7g) • 1 egg • 275ml/10fl oz tepid milk • 125g/4oz of Fruit Mix
For the topping • 2 tbsp of Cream Plain Flour • Vegetable Oil (for greasing) • 1 tbsp golden syrup, gently heated, for glazing
3. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured work surface. Carefully work the mixed dried fruit into the dough until well combined. Knead lightly for 5 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. 4. Grease a large, warm mixing bowl with butter. Shape the dough into a ball and place it into the prepared bowl, then cover with a clean tea towel and set aside in a warm place for one hour to prove. 5. Turn out the proved dough onto a lightly floured work surface and knock back the dough. Shape it into a ball again and return it to the bowl, then cover again with the tea towel and set aside for a further 30 minutes to rise.
Tie the end of the bag tightly so that no air can get in and set aside in a warm place for a further 40 minutes to rise.
8. Preheat the oven to 240C/475F/Gas 8. 9. Meanwhile, for the topping, mix the plain flour to a smooth paste with 2 tablespoons of cold water. 10. When the buns have risen, remove the polythene bag and the greaseproof paper. Spoon the flour mixture into a piping bag and pipe a cross on each bun. 11. Transfer the buns to the oven and bake for 8-12 minutes, or until pale golden-brown. As soon as you remove the buns from the oven, brush them with the hot golden syrup, then set aside to cool on a wire rack.
Ea ster Dinner :
Roast Leg of Lamb with garlic & rosemary (serves 6-8)
6. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured work surface and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten slightly into a bun shape using the palms of your hands. Cover the buns again with the tea towel and set aside to rest for 5-10 minutes. 7. Grease a baking tray with butter and transfer the buns to the tray. Wrap the tray with the buns on it loosely in greaseproof paper, then place inside a large polythene bag.

Ingredients: • Leg of lamb weighing 2½ kg/5lb 8oz • 1 Garlic Bulb • 1 Bunch Rosemary • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
• 2 carrots, cut into large chunks • 1 onion, cut into quarters • 1 glass red wine (about 150ml) • 1.2l beef or lamb stock
Method: 1. Stud the lamb with garlic and rosemary. Use a sharp pointed knife, make at least 30 small incisions all over the meat. Peel 4 garlic cloves, thinly slice them and put a slice into each incision. 2. Pull off small sprigs of rosemary and push into the incisions aswell. If done in advance, cover the lamb well and refrigerate. Remove from the fridge 1 hr before roasting 3. Pre - heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Heat a large frying pan, add a little oil and brown the lamb all over. Scatter the carrot, onion, remaining garlic and rosemary in a large roasting tin, pour in the wine and stock, then place the browned lamb in the tin. 4. Roast for about 1 hr 45 mins. Turn the lamb halfway through so by the time it’s cooked, each side has been in the stock. When cooked, remove the lamb and allow to rest in a warm place covered in foil for about 30 mins. 5. While the lamb is resting, make the gravy. Pour all the stock from the tin through a sieve into a saucepan to remove all the vegetables and herbs. This stock should be rich, slightly thick and have a great lamb flavour. Reduce it a little on the hob if you feel you want to concentrate the flavour, skimming off any fat that comes to the surface. 6. Serve the lamb with the gravy, roast potatoes and vegetables.

Spring Gardening
Springing
Garden S
nowdrops with all their pure, fragile delicacies, Daffodils awaking from a year long slumber with their trumpets pointing toward that first blast of spring sunshine. The first signs of tulip foliage peaking through the soil surface with promises of imminent delights. Ok, I’m out in the garden so where to start? It is time to see how the weather has managed to sort the hardy from the tender. Whilst no two gardens are the same, there are similar jobs we can all be doing at this time of the year. - Begin with assessing the damage the weather may have done to trees and shrubs over the last few months. Where trees are concerned it is important to remove any damaged or broken limbs properly. Using sharp, clean pruning equipment will drastically reduce the risk of die back and infection. Identifying any potentially troublesome branches early will reduce work load and potentially expen-
sive cost in years to come. Potential troublesome branches would include branches that may encroach on your or a neighbouring property. Other potential problems to look out for would be branches growing inward or toward other more established branches that may rub on the bark and open a wound that could become infected. Always ensure a clean cut.

- Assess your planting scheme. What works? What isn’t quite working? Is it time to move “that” plant that has been bothering you? Well then here is a guide on how to do that. It is important to remember that Deciduous plants can be moved from October - mid March. Evergreen plants are best moved in late March as the soil temperatures increase. Try to choose a calm dull day for moving your plants as this will reduce moisture loss and prevent roots drying out. Make sure to water well before you begin the process. How much space to I give for a good rootball? A good indicator is too look at the form of the chosen plant. The canopy (branches
& foliage) spread is a good indicator as to the majority of the feeding roots. Dig around this area and lift as much rootball as possible. I would recommend lifting and replanting in one go so it is important to identify your new site and prepare the area to receive the new plant before hand. This will reduce the amount of stress on the plant. Once you have planted, water in three times. Water once, when the water pool as drained away then water again, once it has drained away water one final time. The final step is mulching, this will retain moisture and reduce evaporation. Do you have a favoured perennial that you’d like more of but can’t find it in the local garden centre or would rather invest your money in adding new planting or landscaping? Then lifting and dividing is the answer.
Summer flowering perennials like Echinacea purpurea or Leucanthemum x superbum ‘Aglaia’ are best divided in spring. Make sure it isn’t too wet to avoid compacting your soil. Spring flowering perennials like Euphorbia characias wulfenii are best divided after flowering when root growth is active.
When dividing, lift gently and shake off excess soil to make sure the roots are visible. Smaller plants like Alchemilla mollis and Heuchera can be divided by hand by just gently pulling apart. Larger plants like Rudbeckia “Goldstrum” and Agapanthus will require splitting using a fork or spade. Ideally you will have selected the new site for the plant and will lift and replant in one go, mulching after watering in. Happy with your current layout? Then mulching over the next couple of months will help your borders retain moisture through those sunny weeks of summer. Well rotted garden compost, well rotted farm yard manure or leaf mould will be the ideal medium to mulch with. This does a couple of very important things for your beds. Mainly it will retain moisture and reduce evaporation, the dark coloration of the mulch will attract the heat and increase the soil temperature, promoting growth and beneficial bacteria. It will also reduce weed growth. Make sure to water well before mulching. Keep the mulch off the main stems of planting to make sure there won’t be any damage to the bark or stems. Stone Paving Installation HOW TO LAY STONE PAVING
GROUND PREPARATION
Preparing the ground for paving depends upon site conditions and the intended use of the paved area. If your ground is firm, you probably only need to remove the turf and topsoil to a depth to allow 100mm of hardcore and 60mm for the slab and mortar thicknesses. If the ground is very soft or if the paved area is going to have heavy traffic on it, you would need to allow for a depth of 200mm of hardcore and 60mm for the slab and mortar thicknesses. If the paved area is going to be driven on, a poured concrete slab underneath the mortar bed is recommended but an engineer might need to be consulted at this stage. In reality, few areas are already level enough for immediate paving, so some areas need to be excavated whilst others need to be made up with compacted hardcore.
NATURAL STONE
We would recommend that you use a 25-35mm wet mortar bed on 100mm of well compacted hardcore for most paving situations.
WHICH WAY UP?
There seems to be some confusion about the way you lay natural stone! The larger surface area is the side of the slab you see when it is laid which means that the joints between the slabs are smaller at the top then they are at the bottom, which also helps the pointing to get a better hold. Please see the diagram below.
SELECTION
We recommend that whenever laying natural stone you should mix your paving from 3-4 different packs (if laying a large area) as this will allow the colours to blend and help to improve any shade variations that may occur between packs, giving your patio a more natural look.
LAYING
We recommend using a wet mortar mix of 1 part cement to 5 parts building sand. Start from a corner or use a string to give yourself a straight line. Trowel five large dabs of mortar at each corner and in the middle of each slab giving yourself a fairly full bed of mortar.Due to the variations in thickness we recommend you start with a thick slab and tap it down into the mortar until you find the correct level (use a rubber mallet to tap the slab down as it will avoid cracking it). Once you lay the first slab, lay the five spots of mortar for the next slab. You could also lay a strip of mortar where the next joint will be, this will minimise pointing afterwards. Ensure that you check all of the levels and falls during the laying process, you should do this by using a spirit level. This will help you to create a patio with a slight fall on it to ensure it drains properly.
CUTTING
If your patio involves a lot of cutting we would advise that you hire a powered cutting tool with a diamond tipped blade. Some stones are harder to cut than others and will require more work.
POINTING
There are several methods and products in the market to help with the pointing of paving products. Air reacting jointing products (i.e. Fuge and Botament) which we sell and the old fashioned cement and mortar mix. We recommend that paving is laid allowing for a minimum 10-15mm joint. If you are using a jointing product please follow the instructions on the cover of the product, as failing to do so could lead to a complete renewal of products. When using a cement mortar mix we recommend using a wet mix (but not sloppy) to produce a more permanent waterproof finish. Make sure you clean the excess cement mortar mix from the paving using a sponge when the mortar is still wet, or a wire brush and some acid cleaner when the mortar has hardened.
SEALING
Should you seal natural stone? We don’t recommend that you have to seal natural stone that is being used outside, however it might help to maintain the colour and keep the paving clean.
AFTERCARE
We recommend that your paved area is kept free of leaves and general garden debris as this will keep it clean for longer. For best results clean your paved area with a small pressure washer every six to twelve months, alternatively there are patio cleaning products available which we can supply you with.
Pebble Driveways
How to construct a gravel / pebble driveway This is something that we get asked about a lot so we decided to explain it here to make it as easy as possible.
Firstly you need to remove the existing driveway or if it is a new driveway you need to remove the topsoil to a minimum depth of 200mm (8 inches). Now you need to add 150mm (6 inches) of crushed stone (hardcore) and compact it with a compacter plate or even better if you can hire a drum roller and roll it. After this you need to blind the hardcore
with material know as quarry dust to an approximate depth of 30mm.When you have this spread all over the hardcore it helps to wet it down slightly and then compact it with the compacter plate. This seals the hardcore and stops it coming back up and getting mixed up with the pebble. Now it is time to put the pebble on top of the dust. The pebble only needs to be 30-40mm in depth (depending on the size of the pebble). If it is any deeper it will be uncomfortable to walk in, impossible to push a pram or a wheelie bin in and will always look untidy. The pebble will bind with the dust and over time will form a good solid surface. One of the many advantages of pebble driveways are that they are permeable and absorb
rainwater so that all the rainwater is not going into the storm water drainage system. To put the finishing touches to your driveway you can dress it with some granite cobble edging and a granite cobble apron at the entrance which will also contain the pebble from getting thrown out on the foot path by the car wheels.
How to work out the quantity of the different material you need: Hardcore: at 200mm depth;
1 ton will cover 4.5 metre square. Quarry dust: at 30mm depth; 1 ton will cover 20 metre square. Pebble/gravel: at 30/40mm depth; 1 ton will cover 18/20 metre square.

The Importance of
Cleansing, Toning & Moisturizing
From a young teenager right through to your elder years it cannot be stressed enough as to how important it is for us ladies to ‘cleanse, tone & moisturize’. As a vital part of our daily lives it is important for a number of reasons. A good daily skin care routine keeps your skin clean, hydrated, protected, healthy and glowing. And for this, it is important to make these 3 steps a regular feature in your day to day routine.
Cleansing – For teenagers and young
ladies is vital for maintaining a clear complexion and to avoid spots and or acne. For women 30 and over it becomes vital for maintaining a youthful appearance helping to fight signs of ageing and drying skin. To start your cleansing routine you need to pin back all hair from your face. If you are wearing mascara you will need to start by moistening a cotton ball with eye make-up remover, hold it on the eye for a minute to loosen eye make-up and mascara then gently wipe until removed. If you are using a cleansing cream again moisten a cotton ball and gently swipe your face in outward movements until all make-up or daily dirt has been removed. If you are using a cleansing face-wash using a pea size amount mix with a little luke warm water and lather up the cleanser, do not scrub hard just soft gentle circling is all that’s needed. Concentrate on places where you have applied your make-up. Spend at least 60 seconds going over your face ensuring you have cleaned all areas. Do not forget your neck, you need to remove any powder, perfume or daily dirt that might have settled there.
Toning - Toning is a very important second step that completes the cleansing process, so many of us choose to leave this step out of our routine for some reason? When In reality, a good toner will remove bits of oil, dirt and any left behind cleanser. But, it is important to know that toner help’s soothe, nourish and hydrate the skin while restoring its delicate pH balance. Our pH balance is completely distorted after washing, our skin then starts to work overtime to restore those levels but by using a toner our pH levels are restored in an instant. To apply your toner, simply moisten a cotton ball and apply to your face and neck using upward strokes, very gently there is no need to be heavy handed with your skin - it is very delicate Moisturizing – There are many types of moisturizers for you to choose from these days to perfectly match your skin type. Skin types usually consist of ‘sensitive, dry, oily or normal’ if you are unsure of which type you are, you can ask the advice of the skin specialist’s behind the skin counters at your local chemists or stores, they are always happy to help and lucky for us know exactly what their talking about. It is very important to do this as part of your skin care routine - twice daily. Make sure to use a moisturizer for day time & then a ‘night’ moisturizer for night time. The differences between the two are: Your daily moisturizer is focused primarily on protecting and supporting your skin while your night time moisturizer is focused on recovery! As moisturizing is the last step in your routine, take a little extra care in applying to your skin. Apply gently using your fingertips in a circular motion, simply pampering your skin after its long hard day. As before do not forget your neck applying in an upward stroke.

Confirmation Day out
! s n o i t a m r i f n Co Sitting with my daughter the other day I turned and asked her ‘What would you like to do for your confirmation this year?’ secretly hoping and praying she was not going to expect a huge big celebration with a function room in the fanciest hotel, with a DJ and over a hundred guests!
But, to my surprise she turned and replied ‘I would like a tea-party here at home with all my family, some music and if it would be ok a bouncing castle. I thought – PERFECT. No day spent visiting every home of every family member drinking numerous cups of tea, everyone will be here in my house all under the same roof eating and drinking, happy and laughing and all for just a couple of hours… Operation Confirmation begins! Planning is the key to a really successful party. If possible give yourself at least 4-6 weeks to plan in advance. 1. Choose a suitable date and time for your party so it does not clash with another. 2. If booking an entertainer phone around for quotes to make sure you get the best prices and if you can try and get some feed back from a previous party that they have performed at. 3. If your hiring a bouncy castle shop around for the best quotes and when possible always confirm details of booking in writing. 4. If planning your party outside it is vital with our Irish weather that you have a ‘Plan B’

Boxing Main Event: Lamont Peterson vs Danny Garcia / Super Lightweight Co-feature: Peter Quillin vs Andy Lee, WBO World Middleweight title Sat, Apr 11th 2015 @ Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York, USA WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (29-0, 17 KOs) will be facing IBF World super light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (33-2-1, 17 KOs) in a unification match on April 11th on NBC. Garcia, 26, was given a gift decision over Mauricio Herrera last year in March in a fight that Garcia clearly lost in Puerto Rico. The judges gave Garcia a win by a 12 round majority decision, but the boxing world saw it as Garcia losing the fight. WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2, 24 KOs) will be making his first defense against a very tough customer in Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) on April 11th on the undercard of the Danny Garcia – Lamont Peterson catch-weight fight in New York. The 2015 Masters
The 2015 Masters Tournament will be the 79th edition of the Masters Tournament and the first of golf’s four major championships to be held in 2015. It will be held from April 9th – 12th at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. The Masters is less than 30 days away, so it isn’t too early to start looking at potential winners. As we’ve seen as a general theme over the last few years on the PGA Tour, there’s been a youth movement. With one exception, I think that trend could continue once we focus in on Augusta National in the first full week of April. With that, here are our 3 early favorites to win the Masters:
3. Matt Kuchar 38
inWICKLOW
March 2015
Kuchar is our “exception to the youth” rule. Then again, at 36, he really isn’t that old. Kuchar’s first Masters appearance was in 1998 when he tied for 21st as the reigning U.S. Amateur champ. After a little rough patch in his professional career in the early 2000s, Kuchar has gone on to become one of the most consistent players in the world. He’ll head to Augusta National this spring having finished no worse than a tie for eighth in his last three trips to the Masters.
2. Rickie Fowler
Surely you’ve heard, but the 26-year-old Fowler was the only player to finish in the top 5 at all four majors in 2014. His 2014 major finishes: T5 Masters; T2 U.S. Open; T2 Open Championship; T3 PGA Championship. That’s crazy good. Fowler is hoping the adage, “If you put yourself in a position to win enough times, eventually you’re going to win” applies to him. The Masters will be our first look at how much “major” confidence Fowler took away from 2014.
1. Rory McIlroy
He’s the most electrifying player in the world right now. Already a four-time major champion at age 25, McIlroy is looking to complete the career grand slam at the Masters in April and also win his third consecutive major. All eyes will be on Rory and rightfully so. That’s the position he’s put himself in and -- furthermore -- no one’s expectations for McIlroy are higher than those he has for himself. Anything less than a win at Augusta National would be disappointing...
