Songs such as Oro se de Bheatha Abhaile, The Tri coloured Ribbon, A Nation Once Again, James Connolly and A Soilders Song which would eventually be translated to Irish and become our National Anthem. Come and celebrate this extremely important period of our history.

Powerscourt Waterfall is Ireland’s highest at 121m (398ft.) and is 5km from the Main Estate. It is set in one of Ireland’s most beautiful parklands at the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. As you drive from the gatelodge towards the Waterfall you are surrounded by Beech, Oak, Larch and Pine trees some of which were planted over 200 years ago. Look out for the Giant Redwoods, which are native to Northern California where they may grow up to 80m high and live for 4,000 years so they are still youngsters!

The Waterfall is an ideal location for summer picnics and barbecues. There is a vast amount of space to keep children entertained. There is also a playground for younger children. But be mindful of the other inhabitants of the parkland! It is a haven for wildlife and children can have fun trying to spot some of the locals – the Chaffinch, Cuckoo, Raven and the Willow Warbler. Some other inhabitants are the Sika Deer which were introduced to Ireland in 1858 and there may be a red squirrel or two. Don’t fret if you forget your picnic as there is a kiosk on site that serves everything from coffee and tea to hot-dogs and ice-cream. The kiosk is open
everyday from the 1st June to the end of August and year round at weekends, if weather permits. There is ample car parking and toilet facilities at the waterfall, dogs are welcome but they must be on a leash. Take time to explore the pathways that meander through the flora and fauna, walk along the woodland pathways and listen to the birdsong. Directions: The Waterfall is located 6km from Powerscourt Estate. From Dublin City and Wexford take Exit 8. After 2 km take the first left towards Enniskerry and follow the signs for Powerscourt Waterfall.

A trip to your local Co-Op or garden centre is a great idea at this time of the year. Staff can give you expert advice on which plants, trees and shrubs will grow best in your area. They can also recommend local gardeners who can look after your garden, if you are unable to do it yourself.
Now is a good time to start off seedlings. To protect from any late frost, plant indoors or use a greenhouse, just until the weather gets a little warmer. Some sturdy vegetables such as onions or potatoes can be planted outdoors. Check individual flower or vegetable seed packets for instructions for sowing and nurturing care.
Build and plant new raised or
ground level flower beds. After planting lay some wood chip mulch on the top layer of soil to retain moisture and keep weeds at bay.
Prepare any existing flower beds by removing old mulch or work into the top layer of soil. To add some much needed nutrients, fork in some well-rotted manure. Deadhead any spring bulbs and

The most important lawn care job for a fantastic lawn is correct and regular mowing. You need to cut the grass whenever it is growing – which is likely to be weekly or even more frequently as the weather warms up in spring. Trim the edges along pathways and flowerbeds to get a nice clean look to your lawn. For help with the planning and layout of your garden, why not download a gardening App onto your phone or tablet. Visit the App Store or Google Play where you can browse the list of Apps which are bursting with ideas for DIY gardening. To enjoy time in your garden try not to overwork yourself on the first day out. With a bit of luck Mother Nature will bless us with some get out and work weather, allowing you to spread the heavy work load over a few evenings and weekends.

Jobs to Do March – Early April Give your mower the once over DIY-er • Check the level and quality of the engine oil. Replace if needed. • Remove and sharpen the blade. • Change the spark plug. • Clean out the old grass cuttings under the body from last season. • Lubricate all other moving parts, wheel axles, pullies
Not a DIY-er? • Give RiteStart in Greystones a call and book your mower in for a service.
Cut your lawn • Now your mower has been given the all clear and the Paddy’s day celebrations are over then it’s time to cut the lawn. Cutting your lawn now will promote green, dense growth and give you a better looking, harder wearing patch for those summer months.
Fed up with your lawn? Now is a good time to replace that ugly patchy lawn.
DIY-er • Lift your existing lawn using a sharp spade or hire a sod cutter from Wicklow Hire. • Once you have the lawn lifted then the next job is to rotovate your lawn area. Wicklow Hire can help you out here too. • Rake the garden level, heeling in all the humps and hollows. • Rake one last time and then you are good to roll your new lawn.
Not a DIY-er? • Give the team at Richard Shortall Landscape Design a call on 0872991932.
Time for a change? • Now is the right time to assess the garden. Think about filling those gaps or replacing the tired old shrubs. • Identify what you want to plant and get the soil ready. • Dig over the designated area removing any weeds along the way. • Add in some well rotted farm yard manure (FYM) or in the case of acid loving plants such as Camellia, Azalea or Pieris then add in Ericaceous compost all available from Country Life Ashford.

Grow your own Potatoes! Potatoes are the most popular vegetables in Ireland and growing your own is remarkably satisfying.
Planting
• Plant between March & April • Dig a trench 5” deep, add farmyard manure or wellrotted compost • Place early potatoes 12” apart and main crops 16” apart. Cover with soil • When first shoots appear ‘earth up’ by covering the shoots, leaving 2” above ground. Use soil from between the rows. Repeat this step until the ridge is about 10” high • Water early in the morning or late evening, not in full sun • Harvest early potatoes after the flowers have faded, about the beginning of July. Later crops can be dug when their leaves have died off
Pests & Diseases
The most common potato disease is “Potato blight”. The first sign of blight is brown spots on leaf tops of your plant. Try to avoid this with the following tips: • Plant blight resistant potatoes such as Sarpo Mira and Orla • Earth up potatoes as they grow, this will protect tubers from spores • Check your potato leaves daily in humid weather • Spray plants with blight fungicide if there are “blight warnings” • Our Seed potatoes are grown in Donegal - Irish potatoes for Irish conditions

Spring cleaning is not just a step meant for your home, car or work space. It is also a vital step for our skin as well. We have spent the last few months piling on the make-up to cover up grey wintery skin tones, layering up with clothes to keep warm outside and drying up our skin with all the central heating we’ve put on inside.
So, now that the Spring season is here we get to just loosen up a little with lighter make-up, hair colours, wearing lighter clothing and to just let our skin breathe a little more. As the result of the very cold wintery weather the last few months some of us will now have the not so joyful-joy of dry, flakey even irritated skin, now is the time to fix these problems and here’s how…

Kilmacurragh Arboretum Located in east County Wicklow, National Botanic Gardens, Kilmacurragh is the centre piece of an 18th century estate that once covered over 5,000 acres. in the past. It is truly stunning, the views are breathtaking and the setting is so natural. The House and Gardens were built in 1697 by Thomas Acton I (1655 1750). The Acton Café was recently opened. Kilmacurragh is like a huge secret garden with a natural presence that feels untouched and preserved
There are ruins of the old house and out buildings scattered through the grounds and a fabulous stream and pond which is teeming with life. The natural meadows are a palate of colours splashed in all directions and the avenues of so many different
trees are fabulous for photographs. Families, couples, hikers or just somewhere for an utterly relaxing walk or picnic. Kilmacurragh has everything for a stress free day out. The grounds are pet dog friendly
once you’re prepared to keep them on a lead. Children friendly and safe once they’re watched by their folks (there is the pond) But most of all it is completely nature friendly and is certainly worth a visit.

Jordan Spieth
THE US MASTERS 2016, AUGUSTA, APRIL 7th – 10th The 2016 Masters Tournament will be the 80th edition of the Tournament and the first of golf’s four major championships to be held in 2016. It will be held from April 7th – 10th at Augusta National Golf Club. There’s little to choose between last year’s runaway winner, Jordan Spieth, and world number three, Rory McIlroy, but I’d quite heavily favour the former. Spieth, the world number one, won last year’s tournament with a record-equaling 18-under-par total, a year after finishing runner-up to Bubba Watson on debut in 2014, and he looks much the stronger candidate for the 2016 edition. We have to be wary of last year’s competition as the course played soft thanks to much rain before the event but his runner-up finish to Bubba in 2014 demonstrates that Spieth is very much at home at Augusta. In saying all of this, not many have accomplished returning to Augusta and retaining the title. Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods are the only three players to achieve the feat.
Favourites: Jordan Spieth (6/1), Rory McIlroy (7/1) & Jason Day (8/1)
Suggested good value: Adam Scott (16/1), Louis Oosthuizen (40/1) & Brandt Snedeker (50/1)
