Cookery Demo with Kevin Dundon Date: Sunday, 25th March 2018 The Coral Leisure Half Marathon &10km will take place on March 25th 2018 starting from the fantastic venue of Wicklow’s Historic Gaol. This is the 10th year of this popular, scenic and atmospheric race. In 2013 we introduced a flatter half marathon which was very well received. We look forward to welcoming over 1,350 participants to our 10th Anniversary race in 2018. The unique Finish area in the Courtyard of Wicklow’s Historic Gaol and the scenic Coastal course has been a big hit with runners and walkers from all over the country. Finishers will receive a bespoke Medal, a shower afterwards in the local Coral Leisure centre and refreshments in Wicklow Gaol. Also chip timed to record your walking or running time. There is a dedicated walking section which starts 40 mins earlier for the Half Marathon to ensure everyone enjoys the atmospheric Finish area in the Courtyard of Wicklow’s Historic Gaol.

St. Patrick’s Day Explore Bray this spring as the town comes alive to celebrate this year’s annual St. Patrick’s Festival which takes place from Saturday March 10th until Monday, March 19th, 2018. There’s a full schedule of events and activities to keep the whole family entertained over the long weekend or simply catch some traditional Irish live music at one of the many venues throughout the town.

The Wicklow Town St Patrick’s Day parade will start at the earlier time of 1pm. Wicklow’s RNLI crew have been announced as the Grand Marshals for this year’s St Patricks Day parade in Wicklow Town. Thousands of spectators are expected to line the streets of Wicklow again this year.

ue to the popular demand, the Wicklow Town parade time has been moved forward to the earlier time of 1pm rather than the usual 3.15pm. Speaking with Eugene Dooley about the day, he said “The Wicklow Pipe Band and the Eichenzell Brass Band will be part of the parade and there will be lots of prizes handed out for the best float and best shop window presentations, with a variety of categories. “We have gotten great feedback over the 1pm start and we came to that decision due to popular demand. Now we are seeking as many local clubs and organisations as possible to take part in the parade on the day.” The parade will start from Whitegates and make its way into town. All Participating bands and floats are asked to meet at 12.15pm prior to the 1pm start. The review stand will be located at Market Square. Anyone who wishes to take part can get an application form from the ‘St Patrick’s Day Parade Wicklow Town’ Facebook page.

inter is normally a quiet time in the garden but it won’t be long before spring arrives and you’ll be caught up in the frenzy of seed-sowing, growing, and nurturing your garden as it comes to life! Fix fences, gates and trellis Although it’s a little cold outside this is the ideal time of year to get those niggly little jobs out of the way! Any broken structures are best fixed now so you have more time to spend in the garden during spring and summer. Treat your wooden garden structures with a wood preservative during dry periods.
Lawn Care • Mow the lawn during a dry spell and avoid walking on a wet lawn. Regular mowing can begin about now, mowing every 7 to 10 days. • Re-make the edges of beds and borders by cutting with a lawn edging tool along the line 22

Climbing plants Climbing plants are an essential feature of every garden and they can be used to transform a wall, trellis or fence. Alternatively, you can grow climbing plants through other plants, especially shrub varieties that flower early in the season. A climbing plant can add that extra colour later in the year. As well as growing climbing plant’s simply for the flowers, you can use them to disguise an unsightly oil tank or to conceal some other unattractive wall feature.

Getting into bedding plants The view across your neighbours’ back gardens can be a varied and instructive sight, for there are those who still regard this valuable space as nothing more than a place to hang the washing line and exercise the cat. Others have a sole interest in, say, roses, and for the better part of every year all one can see from the upstairs windows are gaunt bushes against a cold and forbidding foreground. There is no excuse, because with a minimum of effort even the novice gardener can add interest and colour to their garden by introducing bedding plants.

• Early varieties of cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, lettuce and onions can be started in a tunnel or glasshouse and planted out into better growing conditions during April or May when they have had a head-start. • As the ground continues to dry out, take any opportunity that comes to carry out early outdoor sowings, especially of onions from seed, leeks, parsnips and sprouts, which like an early start. • Plant garlic and shallot sets without delay as it is getting late. • Plant out new herb plants if the ground is in good condition. • Plant potatoes if the soil is in good condition.

Spring Tips from Jean Now is the time to knuckle down and get all your winter work and preparation finished for the growing season ahead. Here are my top 5 things to do in the garden this month. 1. Prune overgrown shrubs • Early March is a great time of the year to prune shrubs and overgrown plants. Shrubs such as Buddleia, Caryopteris, Hydrangea and some Winter flowering shrubs (that have finished flowering) can be pruned now • By Mid-March all rose pruning should be complete • Late March is a good time to carry out pruning on Evergreen shrubs that may have suffered frost damage such as Hebes with the young growing tips scorched by frost
2. Control slugs and snails • The temperature should slowly start to creep upwards in the coming weeks and encourage new growth which is irresistible to slugs and snails, so be sure to take some action now and

I love growing my own fruit and veg and I’m always trying new varieties and ways of growing. The seasons are always changing and while the weather is challenging in Ireland, I believe we grow the best produce in the world.
• Try some salad and veg this year. There are plants such as lettuce, cabbage, broccoli etc available that are ready to sow or start some from seed. Even a small patch will produce lots of fresh produce. Pick 5 veg and give them a try!
4. Love your lawn • On established lawns the first cut of the season can be done now, provided the soil is not to wet. Where moss is a problem Moss Killers can be applied towards the end of March. If the soil is dry enough it is an ideal
time to start preparing areas for sowing in April.
5. Improve your soil and Mulch borders • Dig plenty of compost into heavy clay soils, this will encourage lots of beneficial worms and insects who convert all that organic matter for your plants. This will improve your plant growth and the drainage within your soil. • The best way to improve the soil in established borders is to mulch the surface with a 3cm-layer of organic matter, such as garden compost. It will also help to suppress weeds and trap moisture in the soil. Don’t forget to top dress containers with fresh compost

family Walks & LUNCH Here are just a few of our suggestions for family walks in Wicklow. Remember to pack the rain gear, a camera and sun-cream - it is Ireland after all! It’s always great to get out in the fresh air at the weekend and the exercise does all of us the good. A family day out in the great outdoors is easier than ever thanks to well-maintained walkways. Why not combine a family walk with some lunch in some of Wicklow’s highly recommended Dining venues only a short distance away.
The Bray Head Cliff Walk The cliff walk is a linear walk between Bray and Greystones. It is approximately 6.2km long and, while not physically demanding and well maintained, is a natural walk with variable surface quality.
Glendalough Trail Walks
Green Road Walk (Green Route) Grade: Easy/Distance: 3km/Time: 50 mins The Green Road is an easy stroll on mostly flat ground. This walk passes through the Glendalough oak woodlands before dropping down onto the Lower Lake wetland edge. Views up the valley from the boardwalk here 26

The Promenade starts from the harbour near Martello Terrace, the childhood home of James Joyce, and ends at the base of Bray Head.
