He is best known in his native Ireland as the creator of Ross O’Carroll-Kelly, a fictional rugby jock whose exploits have been the subject of 18 satirical novels that have sold more than one million copies and won three Irish Book Awards.

He is the author of four hugely successful Ross O’Carroll-Kelly plays, which enjoyed long, sellout runs and remounts in Dublin, Cork and Limerick. He also wrote the book and lyrics for two successful musicals: ‘Anglo: The Musical’, a puppet-based comedy about the collapse of Ireland’s banks, in 2012; and ‘Copper Face Jacks: The Musical’, which enjoyed a sell-out run in the summer of 2018. The format of the night will include three or four readings of Ross O’CarrollKelly adventures, complete with voices, intercut with funny stories and anecdotes gathered from his twenty-one years writing about the character of Ross O’Carroll-Kelly. Kilcoole he village of Kilcoole, just south of Greystones, is perhaps the best known of its kind in Ireland – doubling as the fictional village of Glenroe in RTE’s popular soap opera in Kilcoole making it a very well known and special part of Ireland.

Kilcoole is an ancient settlement which owes its existence to the Rock of Kilcoole, a prominent outcropping which dominates the local coastal plain. An area of marshland called the Murrough begins at Kilcoole and extends southward toward Wicklow Town. This area is important for wildlife, especially for migrating birds. Kilcoole has an extensive shingle and sand beach popular with walkers. To the west lie the Wicklow Mountains. The peak of the Great Sugar Loaf is a prominent sight to the northwest.

Kilcoole Church This is a 12th century church. It is a nave and chancel structure. The church stands in a quadrangular graveyard which contains a large number of early 18th century gravestones. The chancel probably once had a step-pitched stone roof with a small attic roof over the chancel. The nave has a small round – headed window in the south wall. The western portion of the church was added later as a two-storey living quarters. A ‘holy well’, 100 m to the north – east, consisting of a natural spring was associated in local tradition with the church. Location: Lott Lane, Kilcoole, County Wicklow.

Kilcoole Marsh & Wetland

The area is a wonderful mix of coastal salt marsh, tidal channels, reed beds, farmland, low sand hills and beach bordered by a narrow dune strip and shingle ridge. The entire stretch of coast and marsh-land is ideal for birding at any time of the year. Viewing the birds is usually straightforward and very often at close range. The village of Kilcoole is about 1 mile inland. Getting There: Kilcoole railway station is served by Iarnród Éireann although the number of trains stopping there is limited to a handful each day. There is a car park behind the train station and you can cross the railway lines there by foot. Once across you should notice a grassy track heading south, along which excellent views over the marsh and out to sea can be had. The track is flat, easy to walk and runs all the way to Newcastle. The existence of the quartzite outcrop known as the Rock is undoubtedly responsible for the initial settlement and location of Kilcoole. Early peoples arriving in Ireland after the last ice age would have been drawn to the Rock, from which one could spot approaching boats and erect defences. Food would have been abundant in the birds and fish of the marsh and coastal area, just a mile away. Besides its usefulness, the Rock must have also been an impressive landmark that represented the status and pride of the people living there.

Focus on Kilcoole

The coast of Co. Wicklow from Kilcoole south to Wicklow town forms the largest coastal wetland complex on the east coast of Ireland. The beach and marsh at Kilcoole are at the northern end of this feature. A number of streams flow in to the marsh forming channels before converging and cutting through the shingle bank and entering the Irish Sea at The Breaches. This cut in the bank also permits the tide to enter the marsh and a number of embankments have been constructed at various places to attempt reduce the chances of flooding.

Kilcoole - The Rock

Glenroe Farm is one of Wicklow’s top tourist attractions. The farm is ideally located beside the picturesque North Wicklow coastline and less than an hour from Dublin City just off the N11.
