Plurabelle Paddlers come to the Rescue of Wicklow Regatta Festivals Raft Race

7.00pm Garda Band

When Wicklow Regatta Festival Committee met to confirm their schedual of events for this, their 135th Annual Regatta they were faced with a challenge. They no longer had access to their past supplier of Life Jackets / Boyancy Aids worn by their enthusiastic competitors in the Regattas Annual Raft race. Faced with cancelling the event the committee began to phone around seeking help from a number of different organisations who run water sports events. It was only when they spoke with Fiona Tierney of Plurabelle Paddlers, a team of ladies going thru or recovering from Breast Cancer, they heard the magic words “Yes, we have to help each other”. The future of the Raft Race was secured. Dragon Boat Racing started 15 years ago in Canada where a Doctor proved that Wemon with Breast Cancer were less likely to get Lymphoedemy by exercising their upper arms. The show features several theatrical cos-

tume changes depicting the many different sides to this eccentrically talented maestro. The Queen Experiences Freddie is notorious for his impromptu interaction with his audience which generates a great atmosphere as the show reaches its climax. ‘The Queen Experience’ will have you rocking with their special kind of magic playing great hits from Queens extensive catalogue ensuring you’ll want it all by the end of the evening.

Geraldine O Toole and Peter Maguire of Truly Scrumprious will celebrate three years in business in Wicklow by Sponsoring the Best Dressed Doll competition which will be judged at the GAA Grounds on the Sunday afternoon. Geraldine has some surprises (not just sweets) up her

such as The Black Keys and Nirvana, they have developed their own sound of aggressive blues rock. “It is two guys, guitar and drums, resulting in raw, edgy and rather muscular blues rock with a hint grunge and punk.” - Barry Gruff Music Blog. “If you like Katy Perry and all that nonsense I don’t recommend The Last Monroes. But they will appeal to fans of Led Zepplin, Johnny Marr, and Rory Gallagher etc.” - U&I Magazine.

7.00pm Daydream Regime Daydream Regime are a five piece band from the Wicklow mountains who seem totally tune with their surroundings. Formed through a mutual love of all things noisy, obscure and beautiful, they blend lush soundscapes with blissed out melodies which would see these neo-psychedelic’s sit comfortably on a couch with the Super Furry Animals . Songs like ‘Postcard from Venus’ and ‘Shot in the Dark’ will take the listener on a stellar journey but ultimately show a band who really understand and love their craft.

How to get an amazing last minute summer look! with Anna Schu

W

orking as cabin crew with Emirates and being on call for last minute flights, I had to learn how to apply make up and do my hair very quickly I learned different ways to style my hair and do my make up super-fast! With the fast-paced and busy lives that most of us lead today, I have a few tips to help get your hair and makeup looking great in no time at all, whether you’re rushing out to work after being out late the night before or simply hurrying to get the children to school on time!

Tip No.1 Know your hair type

Spend a few minutes thinking about how your hair works you’ll know what products to use and which ones to avoid! If you have coloured hair, remember to use conditioning treatments regularly. Summertime is great for leaving treatments in during the day due to the warmer weather so try to take advantage of this. Also, try to avoid blow drying your hair for a few weeks in the summer to give it a break. My grandmother always said you should only wash your hair once a week! While that is difficult to comprehend today, I actually can manage twice a week with my coloured hair! Day 1 After washing your hair, leave it down and avoid touching it! Day 2 Put sides up Day 3 If your hair is looking a bit tatty and greasy, now is the time to add a treatment. Spray in conditioner or put hair mayonnaise all through the ends of the hair and if long enough, tie into a top knot. Put on a big pair of earrings and apply bright lip gloss to distract from messy hair. Day 4 If you can get away with another day, hairspray the wispy bits. Add a bobby pin here or there and rearrange the bun!

Tip No.2 The art of distraction If your hair is an awful mess, make sure that your makeup is looking good. If you’re having a bad skin day, make sure your hair is styled or blow-dried! If you’re not feeling confident in either your hair or makeup, accessorize with bright coloured scarves and jewellery and make sure your nails are polished. Nail trends at ANNA SCHU this summer, are pastels, blue’s and lots of experimenting with colour. Gelish and Shellac are better value and last longer on

...Stay Sun Protected from Jamie Fitzgerald, Butlers Medical Hall Wicklow Town

O

verexposure to sunlight is widely accepted as the underlying cause for harmful effects on the skin, eye and immune system. Experts believe that UV damage is mostly avoidable. Adopting the following simple precautions can make all the difference.

creams are:

1. La Roche Posay Anthelios XL 50+ 2. Clarins sensitive skin 50+ 3. Vichy Capital Soleil 50+ Infants

Shade, clothing and hats provide the best protection – applying sunscreen becomes necessary on those parts of the body that remain exposed like the face and hands. Sunscreen should never be used to prolong the duration of sun exposure.

For Adults: One of the most important places to stay sun protected on us adults is our face’s, we want the sun minus the wrinkles on our face and décolleté. So for: Fair Skin / Sensitive Skin our ‘Top 3’ protection creams are:

1. Clarins 50+ sun wrinkle Control 2. La Roche Posay 50+ Fluid + Cream 3. Vichy Capital Soleil 50

Butlers Top Tip: Always remember to stay hydrated & eat plenty of fruit & vegetables throughout this hot weather our bodies from head to toe depend on it.

For Children: Children under the age of 3 should never spend an extended period of time in direct sunlight. It is especially important for children of all ages to avoid being in the sun when it’s at its most dangerous this is usually between 12pm – 3pm For children the best protection you can use is an UVA/UVB 50+ based cream. Our ‘Top 3’ protection

Remember… The sun is the first cause of skin ageing & long term skin damage. Sun protection is extremely important to us all from small babies to our older generations! So keep your skin protected at all times.

A Frequently asked question: Q. Can I use my skin products from

last year? A. A skin product which may have been exposed to the heat and air can lose its protective ability, so therefore it is not recommended!

Monaco are investing heavily in success this summer and have spent a further £61.5m bringing in Rodrigues and Moutinho from Porto. They are the latest team to try to buy a seat at Europe’s top table but as history can testify, money doesn’t guarantee success. The premier league transfer frenzy has had a slow start but there are a few signing of note. Manchester City have brought in Jesus Navas and Fernandinho for a combined £50.5m to bolster

Sport Focus the Sky Blue midfield with Carlos Tevez moving the other way to Juventus. Chelsea finally secured the services of their long time target Andre Schurrle from Bayer Leverkusen for £17.5m. It is unclear if he will be a partner or replacement for the misfiring Fernando Torres with rumours suggesting Roman Abramovich has lost patience with the £50m marksman. Liverpool’s Brendan Rogers has been the busiest manager in the market so far. Andy Carroll has made his loan move to West Ham a permanent one. Kolo Toure arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City to add some experience to the Liverpool defense now that Jamie Carragher has retired. Add to that Luis Alberto from Sevilla, Iago Aspas from Celta Vigo and Simon Mignolet from Sunderland and it is clear that Brendan Rogers means business.

series being held directly before Cricket World Cups. England go into this double header, after winning the coveted urn on the last two occasions, as overwhelming favourites. In my opinion, Ian Botham has the most entertaining take on the event. He predicts that England will win 5-0 in both series. “I’m serious. Why not? I think we’re that much better.” He maintains that Australia’s lack of experience, problems with injuries and their failure to replace the retiring Ricky Ponting, Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath will leave them open to an embarrassing defeat. Although, Michael Clarke has recovered from a niggling back injury so that is a plus for Australia. Botham pokes fun at the Australian coach Mickey Arthur over an incident earlier this year. He dropped four players for the third test in India because they had not submitted a feedback presentation requested by management after a thrashing. Botham feels that Australia’s players are often left confused by their coaches input but what he said was: “Maybe they’ve been playing so badly because the players are confused by this stuff. I’m just glad I played in the pre-bulls**t era, where grown men were allowed to go away on tour for months on end and be treated like grown men and not schoolboys. Homework? Do me a favour. I never did that when I was at school, nevermind when I was playing cricket.”

to defend his title on the Muirfield links course knowing that he was victorious the last time the Open was played here back in 2002. Pair that with his 4th place finish at the U.S Open and Els starts to look good for this tournament. The finest golfers in the world will descend on the east coast of Scotland to rival Els for the famous Claret Jug. Tiger Woods is again the bookies favourite at 9/1 followed by Lee Westwood and Luke Donald at 16/1 and 20/1 respectively. Tiger woods disappointed at the U.S Open finishing tied for 32nd on 13 over par so doesn’t represent good value for this tournament. Westwood tied for 15th and Luke Donald tied for 8th and look far more consistent overall. The course is 7,192 yards long and 71 gets you par. The course has been lengthened 158 yard by moving the tees back and with three long par 5 holes it may favour the bigger hitters. The unpredictable scottish weather will also be a factor and anyone who performs well in the wind will also have an advantage.

Steak on the stone is a meal like no other. A meal where you have the opportunity to cook your steak exactly as you like and where every last mouthful is guaranteed to be as hot and delicious as if it were the first. 1. Upon arrival at your table your steak will be seared on one side. Your waiter or waitress (or yourself) should then turn your steak ensuring it is seared on all sides. 2. It is then left to you to cut and cook each individual mouthful exactly as you like, adding your chosen sauces either before or after the cooking process

7oz Fillet Steak “Steak on the Stone”

€23.95

A Fusion of flavours, Mouthwatering versatility, Sumptuous simplicity, exactly as you like! Includes Sides & Sauces

3. For a more well done steak, cut a couple of bite size pieces and turn them a few times. This will sear them on the outside and begin to cook them through whilst ensuring all the flavours and moisture of your selected cut are trapped inside. 4. If you like your steak more on the rare side, a complete steak will stay rare on the inside for much longer than the bite sized pieces you cut, so simply slice, sear and enjoy each mouthful.

FTHE GRUNTS IN TROUBLE Philip Ardagh AGE 6+ Mr and Mrs Grunt, who are neither clean nor clever, live with their adopted - in fact, abducted - son, Sunny, in a donkey-drawn caravan somewhere or other at some time that is a bit like now but not exactly now. Sunny is an odd-looking boy, what with his left ear being higher than his right ear and that kind of sticky-up hair which NEVER goes flat, even if you massage glue into it and then jump on it. Together the unusual family find themselves in frankly improbable but very funny adventures involving bendy railings, double-barrelled shotguns, full-fat yoghurt and, always, a beard of bees Book 2 ‘The Grunts all at Sea’ is out now

THE DARING ESCAPE OF BEATRICE & PEABODY Kimberly Newton-Fusco AGE 9+ Bee is an orphan who lives with a travelling carnival. Every day she endures taunts for the birthmark on her cheek - though her beloved Pauline, the only person who has ever cared for her, tells her it is a precious diamond. When Pauline is sent to work for another carnival, Bee is lost. Then a scruff y dog shows up, as unwanted as she, and Bee realizes that she must find a home for them both

THE MAGUS CONSPIRACY Michael Synnott

The Magus Conspiracy is book I of The TÍR Saga, a science fiction/fantasy series based around Wicklow. The story centres on Mark McHewell, a fourteen year old boy whose father Fintan has disappeared in mysterious circumstances. Mark and his mother Bree are learning to adjust when Mark discovers a clue to Fintan’s absence in, of all places, a peculiar story in a sci-fi comic. Following the clues in the comic, Mark and his friends Niamh and Ferdia uncover a cryptic wooden cube and a series of mysteries that suggest Fintan was leading a double life. A website run by the inscrutable Del Forgill leads them further into intrigue and as the deaths accumulate, so do the questions: What are the Tetroi? Why are mythological wooden flying machines stealing the GPS satellites? And what does the whole affair have to do with Simon Magus and the old disused lighthouse on Wicklow Head? Residents of Wicklow will be familiar with many of the locations featured in the story including The Black Castle, Wicklow Harbour, The Old Lighthouse, the lime kiln and canyon at Bride’s Head, the churches and the abbey. Michael J Synnott grew up in Wicklow Town and now lives on a farm in Ashford, Co Wicklow, with his wife Dee and their cat Mira.

The World’s End

Release Date: July 12th Acclaimed documentarian Alex Gibney takes the reins for this no-holds-barred look at one of the most unusual phenomena of early 21st century media.
