Killrudery House & Garden Killruddery House is one of the most successful EIizabethanRevival mansions in Ireland. In the 1820’s the 10th Earl engaged the fashionable architects of the day – Richard Morrison and his son William – to remodel Killruddery. In the 1950’s the house was greatly reduced to its present day proportions, but much of the Morrison’s design and architecture still remain. The Estate is a popular location for many well known movies and TV mini-series including My Left Foot, Far & Away, Angela’s Ashes, The Tudors and Camelot. The Gardens at Killruddery are the oldest in Ireland still surviving in their original 17th century unique style together with 18th and

19th century additions. They were designed for the entertainment of a large number of people and therefore the scale is comparable to that of a park and should be regarded as mainly the work of the 4th and 6th Earls. A French Landscape architect named Bonet, a pupil of Le Notre, was known to have been employed by the Earl of Meath in 1682.

The Garden Cafe The Garden Cafe is open daily from 12.30 5.00, serving a selection of homemade desserts, teas and coffees, also Killruddery garden soups. Situated in one of the most beautiful buildings

in Killruddery, the old ornamental dairy, the Cafe is located within the gardens which require an entrance ticket. Special event hire at Killruddery includes the formal rooms and the gardens. There is ample car parking in front of the house and good serving areas are provided for catering staff. The grounds of the parklands within view of the house are available for large scale event hire. Marquees can be erected in this area and there is access for service providers.

Garden Opening Times:

May to September - Daily 9.30am - 6pm; October - Weekends only, 9.30am - 6pm; Late opening on Thursdays, 9:30am - 10pm; Farm Market, every Saturday, 10am - 4pm The house itself is open during July, August, September, daily: 1pm - 4pm.

Walking in Wicklow

W a l k i n g

The countryside of Ireland is a patchwork of many different landscape types, including several mountainous and upland areas. One of the most spectacular of these is in county Wicklow, just south of Dublin, which despite its proximity to the capital contains many kilometres of wonderfully unspoilt mountain trails.

in

GlenmalurE

The scenic valley of Glenmalure is the longest glacier valley in Ireland & the UK. Overlooked by Leinster’s highest peak, Lugnaquillia (925m), this remote valley was once territory to fierce battles such as the Battle of Glenmalure (1580) where English troops were annihilated at the hands of the Irish clansmen under Feagh MacHugh O’Byrne.

Some 200 years later, it became the haunting ground of the United Irishmen under Michael Dwyer. Dwyer used safe houses in Glenmalure to meet and plan rebellions. It is also said that Dwyer used to come down from the hills to taunt the Red Coats who were constructing the Military Road before disappearing again! Indeed he watched their barracks at Drumgoff from whats now known as ‘Dwyer’s Rock’ on the side of Mullacor Mountain.

How to get there: • From Laragh/Glendalough – take the Rathdrum road at Lynham’s Hotel out of the village. Go over the bridge and take the first right. This will lead you over the mountains & down into Glenmalure. At the crossroads turn left into the Glenmalure Lodge and carpark • From N11 – take the Rathdrum exit and follow signs for Rathdrum. In Rathdrum village, turn left at the Bank Of Ireland and stay on this road. The Road bends to the right at Byrne’s Pub, Greenan, and you will arrive at the Glenmalure Lodge and car park.

Keep your eyes peeled for: Much of the route is surrounded by forestry, mainly conifers including Norway spruce, Sitka spruce, lodgepole pine and Japanese larch. Glenmalure is also well known among birdwatchers for rare birds like peregrine falcons who breed in the area. Garden warbler have been seen around the Dwyer Monument.

On your right is Parnell Park where you will find free parking. To find Avondale House and Forest Park, turn left at the crossroads and continue for another 1.5km. Ample pay parking provided.

Keep your eyes peeled for: Avondale is famous for its array of native & exotic trees. Near the house, towering high with a flaky bark, there are eucalyptus trees. Pick a fallen leave & rub it, you will get a very familiar smell. This rich and diverse forest is home to a wide range of animals, insects, mosses and fungi. A colony of whiskered bats also reside here. Watch out for them at dusk! Although widespread across Europe, they are a threatened species in Ireland.

valley carved out during the Ice Age. Leaving behind the rugged splendour of the cliffs, tell tale deposits and the two lakes. Famous for its round tower and the monastic site of Saint Kevin, Glendalough is possibly the best known tourist destination in Ireland. Meaning ‘the valleyof two lakes’, Glendalough is a truly spellbinding and spiritual place which possesses the uncanny ability to completely enthral. St. Kevin first came to Glendalough in the 6th Century to live as a hermit, but inspired so many others that his solitude was short lived and a monastery was formed. The settlement flourished and expanded for many years before being destroyed in the 16th Century. The remains of the monastic settlement seen today tell just a small part of this story, which is interpreted superbly at the Glendalough Visitor Centre. Rich in History and its many wonderful archaeological discoveries, this Special Area of Conservation also possesses a captivating wild beauty. It is a perfect example of a U shaped glacier

How to get there! • From N11 – take the exit for Glendalough at Kilmacanogue. Continue on this road, passing through Roundwood and Laragh villages. Just after the sign for the Wicklow Gap, take a left turn into the Visitor Centre car park. • From N81 – turn off at Hollywood and drive over the scenic Wicklow Gap. On reaching the T-junction at the other side of the mountains, turn right. Visitor Centre car park is the next left.

Keep your eyes peeled for: Glendalough is not only famous for its cultural heritage but also for the abundance of wildlife & plants which inhabit the area. Glendalough is home to badgers, foxes and a large herd of sika like deer, red squirrels & you might even spot some feral goats. Glendalough is also a haven for birds & birdwatchers alike.

. . . o T w o H ...Make-up Guide!!!

with Nichola Curran

W

e all love to follow whats on trend in makeup but some of what we see on the runway is not exactly wearable for the everyday woman going to work or simply just to feel good about yourself as you go about your daily routine. My tutorial today is to show you how you can get the hottest catwalk inspired looks but in a wearable and budget friendly way. This look is inspired by colour and i have chosen to express this in a bright pop of colour on the lips. 1. Prime your skin based on your skintype. I have quite dry and red skin so i am using Eucerin anti redness moisturiser. 2. Choose a foundation that matches your skin tone and buff this into your skin preferably using a buffing or stippling brush this just helps to evenly spread the product and give you an air brushed look. I am using the 123 perfect foundation from bourjois which is amazing if you have any kind of red pigmentation in your skin and i am buffing this in with a real techniques buffing brush. 3. Next onto the eyes, as this is a daytime look we are not going too heavy on the eyes. using the oh so special eyeshadow pallette from SLEEK i am using the white shimmer shadow all over my lid and up to my brow bone. next using a crease brush i am using the light matte brown shade and just using back and forth movements lightly defining the crease. Next take the dark matt brown shade and repete what we did with the lighter brown shade although not going as high as we did above the crease. this will

add depth to the eyes but in a subtle way.

4. Line your waterline with a white eyeliner, im using one from rimmel . this will open up your eyes. 5. This next step is optional. I have put a very thin line of gel liner along my lash line to define my eye shape. 6. Add mascara, i am using benefit “they’re real” 7. If needed apply concealer to your undereye area. As the foundation i am using is great for hiding all kinds of discolouration i dont have to use a concealer over this. 8. The lip colour i have gone for is a bright coral colour from rimmel. And as orange is featured heavily on trend this season i have toned it down slightly to make it more wearable. 9. After you have applied your lip colour, take a small dab of the same coral colour on your finger and dab it into the apples of your cheeks, i love using products in more than one way, this gives a gorgeous summery look. 10. Apply a clear lip gloss over your lips. 11. This step is optional but i think it just compleets the whole look. Taking some of the clear lip gloss dab some on your fingers and pat them together to just take away the stickiness, then dab this over the coral colour on your cheeks and up around your temples. This gives a gorgeous dewey summer look without leaving you shiny. 12. Also dab a bit of the gloss onto your eyelids. 13. Depending on your skin type use some light setting powder on the areas you want to mattify. i have done this around my nose , chin and forehead area.

This is a great look that can take you all through the day and if you wanna switch it up and use it for nighttime simply just add more colour to the eyes using the SLEEK pallette.

S

kin is the largest organ in the human body, yet we often take it for granted. Facing shelf after shelf of facial products, when out shopping, can be daunting. Here are a few quick tips to great healthy looking skin:

Cleanse: It is important to cleanse your skin every night to remove make-up, impurities, and excess oil. A morning cleansing is also important, as it removes any toxins the skin eliminates during the night and refreshes the skin. Exfoliate: Exfoliation is one of the most important things you can do for your skin

to achieve healthy and glowing skin. Skin scrubs, although great for the body, can be too abrasive on the face and cause sensitivity... Remember skin doesn’t need to feel tight and dry to be considered clean. In fact, that usually means you have stripped away important layers of natural oils. We recommend Daily microfoliant from Dermalogica. This is a gentle non-abrasive exfoliant that can be used 3 to 7 times a week depending on your skin type.

Tone: Toning skin keeps the pores clean and skin healthy. This will prepare skin to be more receptive to the nourishing care that comes with moisturising.

your skin soaked up in the shower. It’ll have you looking healthier in no time, with soft, hydrated skin. SPF is a must in any moisturiser UV rays are always there even on cold winter days it is important to protect your skin all year round.

Healthy Diet: It is also a good idea to eat foods that are fresh and not overly processed . Vitamins A, C and E are very important for healthy skin, these can be found in loads of fruit and veg along with many other foods. Drinking plenty of water helps to keep skin hydrated. Note from Nevaeah’s: It is important to Exercise & get your beauty sleep as both help skin to flush out pores & rejuvenate

Moisturise: It’s best to apply moisturiser right after you shower, this locks in the water

Proper pampering is all about the products treatments and how it is used that makes the difference, in my professional opinion I would always go for the indola inova intense repair range. This range is full of natural ingredients including keratin which is one of the important elements of the hair structure.

Step: 1 the indola inova shampoo, this shampoo cleanses the hair while wheat proteins work to repair the hair shaft, it has been formulated to transform weak and damaged hair into hair with health and shine, it

Step: 3 Indola Innova Repair Rinse off Treatment helps in rebuilding damaged and brittle hair. The Treatment contains cationic polymers, pro-vitamin B5, hydrolysed keratin and other nourishing ingredients that repairs the hair structure from deep within to give that strong healthy feeling back. I personally like leaving this treatment in my hair loosely clamped up whilst pottering or doing the house work etc. and then rinsing it out J The thing I like about these products is it never weighs your hair down or leaves a build-up. I would recommend using these products 2-3 times weekly with the intense leave in rinse out treatment one a week and try not to use a to high alcohol content shampoo in between using the indola inova range, after a few weeks your hair will feel revived and have that high glossy shine once again.

T

he month of May is an exciting time in the year’s sporting calendar and see’s the culmination of a seasons worth of blood, sweat and tears for many teams. European finals are contested and league champions are crowned. Ambitions are realized for the lucky few and dreams are crushed for the many unfortunate others. Sport is either triumph or torture but we love it.

Premier League concludes With one game left to play, the Premier League is all but decided. League winners, Manchester United secure their 20th League title and Wigan, Reading and Queens Park Rangers are relegated to the second tier of English football. There is one last Champions League place up for grabs with Spurs hoping Arsenal will slip up in their final game and allow them to snatch the coveted prize from their grasp. The mid table teams will play out the remaining game for pride with one eye on their summer holidays and the other on next season. This season is a particularly poignant one as it see’s Alex Ferguson bring the curtain down on his 26 year reign

as Manchester United manager. It is definitely the end of an era which has brought an unprecedented level of success to Manchester United including 13 Premier League titles and 2 Champions Leagues. Ferguson leaves a healthy club with a world-wide fan base and a young talented team to his fellow Scotsman David Moyes. Moyes is an experienced and successful manager from his time with Everton and the eyes of the world will be on him to see if he can fill the big tartan boots left by Sir Alex. Paul Scholes retirement almost slipped under the radar during Fergie’s fanfare. He deserves a special mention as part of the ‘one-club legend’ club. His unassuming character is testament to his commitment to Manchester United and he is as decorated a player as one will find in world football. He is a consummate professional and it’s quite fitting that he bows out quietly. Manchester United are not the only team to appoint a new manager. There is a changing of the guard at three of the top four clubs in the Premier League. Roberto Mancini was relieved of his duties as a result of failing to defend the league title and a poor performance in the Champions League. Current Malaga manager, Manuel Pellegrini, is the front runner to take the Sky Blues hot seat. Rafa Benitez can hold his head high after winning the Europa League and securing Champions League football with Chelsea. He knew when he arrived that he would only see out the season as interim Blues boss and reports suggest that Jose Mourinho will make a prodigal return as Chelsea manager and reunite with the eccentric Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. With this managerial merry-goround happening at the top level, it may allow teams such as Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal to steal a march on their rivals next year. The new managers at the top three clubs will take time to mould their teams to their vision and if the clubs below them can hit the ground running then we might see a very interesting Premier League

campaign for 2013/14. Next season is definitely the most uncertain and unpredictable season in recent memory and I for one am looking forward to it.

News & Events The US Open returns to the historic Merion Golf Club, Ardmore Pennsylvania after thirty-two years. This golf club has hosted eighteen USGA championship tournaments, more than any other course, since opening in 1896 and is famous as the venue for the only grand slam win in the history of golf by Bobby Jones in 1930. Tiger Woods did hold all four majors at the same time but it was over two calendar years so Bobby Jones’ record still stands. Tiger is the in form player going into this tournament having won four out of the seven tournaments that he’s played this year, most recently winning the Players Championship at Sawgrass Florida, and is hot favourite to win his first major since 2008. A win here would bring Tiger to fifteen majors, just three short of Jack Nicklaus’ record of eighteen, and would signal the return of the ‘old Tiger’ to the upper echelons of golf once again. Another American golfer chasing a major win is Phil Mickleson. The US Open is one title that’s missing from the mild mannered Yank’s trophy cabinet and he’ll be hoping that this is the year he can change his luck in this tournament. Ireland will be watching Rory McIllroy to see if the twenty three year old phenomenon can repeat his feat of 2011 and win the US Open a second

time. McIllroy has struggled for consistency since changing to Nike clubs but has shown glimpses of his golfing abilities in recent tournaments. If he finally gets to grips with his new hardware then he could give Tiger a run for his money. It’s hard to see past Tiger Woods for the US Open this year but whatever the result, fans will get to see the cream of the golfing world compete for that elusive major tournament win. Best of luck to Rory McIllroy. We’ll be rooting for you.

He will no doubt be in the mix for this tournament but has managed to win it only once in his career. He has won the French Open seven times and has won a remarkable fifty-two out of fifty-three singles matches at Roland Garros. Nadal’s fellow professionals got brief respite during his seven month lay-off last year but he has returned with a vengeance and has won four clay tournaments since his return in February. Roger Federer is the grass master but historically loses out to his nemesis

This tournament is as close to a formality as you can get at the top level of sport so it’s best just to sit back and watch the master of clay at work. Upon arrival at your table your steak will be seared on one side. Your waiter or waitress (or yourself) should then turn your steak ensuring it is seared on all sides. 2. It is then left to you to cut and cook each individual mouthful exactly as you like, adding your chosen sauces either before or after the cooking process

7oz Fillet Steak “Steak on the Stone”

€23.95

A Fusion of flavours, Mouthwatering versatility, Sumptuous simplicity, exactly as you like! Includes Sides & Sauces

3. For a more well done steak, cut a couple of bite size pieces and turn them a few times. This will sear them on the outside and begin to cook them through whilst ensuring all the flavours and moisture of your selected cut are trapped inside. 4. If you like your steak more on the rare side, a complete steak will stay rare on the inside for much longer than the bite sized pieces you cut, so simply slice, sear and enjoy each mouthful.
