The Garden of Ireland

Wicklow is Ireland’s premier outdoor destination: walk or cycle the Wicklow mountains. Play on some of Ireland’s best links and parkland golf courses. Ride through stunning landscape. Fish along our coast, rivers or lakes.

E

Wicklow is located thirty minutes South of Dublin City Centre. From Mountains to Sea, Wicklow’s landscape is unique: cliffs, sandy beaches, rolling mountains, hidden lakes, bogs, friendly villages, etc. Wicklow is at the heart of Ireland’s Ancient East: visit here pre-historic places of worship; follow on the footsteps of St Kevin in Glendalough’s 6th Century monastic site; experience the troubled times of the 1798 Rebellion in Wicklow Jail; admire the grandeur of Russborough or Killruddery houses; wander through Ireland’s most beautiful gardens like Powerscourt or Mount Usher. stunning landscape. Fish along our coast, rivers or lakes. Wicklow has the largest national park in Ireland, the biggest forest land, the largest mountain area, the highest waterfall, the biggest man-made lake and the source of Dublin’s own River Liffey. Wicklow is blessed with some of Ireland’s most scenic landscape and sceneries. From Mountains to Sea, Wicklow offers a variety of marked trails to suit all types of Walkers. Cycling enthusiasts can meander through the series of mountain bike trails in Ballinastoe Forest, offering views of the Sugar Loaf Mountain, before slicing down along single-track paths through moorland, thicket spruce and rocky ridges back to the foothills.

The prestigious National Geographic selected it as one of the top 3 gardens in the world and the daily responses from our visitors continually confirm the life enhancing nature of visiting Powerscourt.

“W Pet Cemetery One of the most interesting parts of Powerscourt Gardens is the pet’s cemetery which is the resting place of the much loved pets of the Wingfield and Slazenger families. It’s situated in a quiet part of the gardens where you can enjoy the striking colours of Azaleas, Rhododendrons and Roses.

The prestigious National Geographic selected it as one of the top 3 gardens in the world and the daily responses from our visitors continually confirm the life enhancing nature of visiting Powerscourt. One visit is rarely enough. There is so much to see and enjoy in Powerscourt Estate including the

Our gardens offer many hidden treasures – from a walk through the formal Italian garden, to exploring the pathways and secret grotto in the Japanese garden, to marvelling at the range and record-breaking size of our trees.

ATTRACTIONS

Powerscourt Gardens include The Walled Gardens, The Italian Garden, The Dolphin Pond, The Japanese Gardens, Pets Cemetery and Pepperpot Tower,

My family have now been custodians of Powerscourt Estate for over 50 years and we are so pleased that you are visiting Powerscourt and thus becoming part of its rich and extraordinary history.” Powerscourt Gardens were recently voted No.3 in the World’s Top Ten Gardens by National Geographic. The Gardens stretch over 47 acres and offer visitors a sublime blend of formal gardens, sweeping terraces, statues and ornamental lakes, secret hollows and rambling walks. Managed by Head Gardener, Alex Slazenger and a team of four gardeners, Powerscourt Gardens were designed from 1731 onwards, with the desire to create a garden which was part of the wider surrounding landscape. Powerscourt Gardens include The Walled Gardens, The Italian Garden, The Dolphin Pond, The Japanese Gardens, Pets Cemetery and Pepperpot Tower, among other features and attractions.

The symbolism of the garden The Japanese Garden looks wonderful in spring when the azaleas are in full bloom and their blossoms perfume the air, and in autumn with the vibrant colours of the Japanese maples. Stone lanterns guide you through the winding paths of the garden, bringing you to its innermost circle. Here you will find a Pagoda and a trickling stream under pretty Japanese bridges. The next circle is marked by a ring of Chinese Fortune Palms, which have been cultivated in China and Japan for thousands of years and were first brought to Europe in 1830. The upper circle provides stunning views of the Japanese Garden and the Sugar Loaf Mountain in the distance. There is a beautiful concept behind each of these circles: working inwards, we discover our inner selves; working outwards and upwards we gain greater knowledge of the world around us.

The Pepperpot Tower In Tower Valley you will find the Pepperpot Tower which was modelled on a pepperpot from Lord Powerscourt’s dining table! It is from this that Tower Valley received its distinctive name. Climb the tower’s winding steps and enjoy the views of Powerscourt House and Gardens.

Managed by Head Gardener, Alex Slazenger and a team of four gardeners, Powerscourt Gardens were designed from 1731 onwards, with the desire to create a garden which was part of the wider surrounding landscape.

ATTRACTIONS The Self-Guided Exhibition “An interactive exhibition suitable for young and old alike” A few years ago, a fascinating discovery led to a completely new facet of the Russborough experience when five-thousand 3D glass negatives and cinema footage of Sir Alfred’s world travels were discovered in the basement. A team worked tirelessly to archive every last detail in order to bring something special to the general public. The result is the 3D exhibition, which honours Sir Alfred’s love of capturing magical moments with his camera and brings to light many other fascinating aspects of the Beits’ time at Russborough.

With many of our long-term resident fairies completing home improvements over the Winter, Lady’s Island has become a very fashionable fairy address and many clever fairies have made the move to Russborough.

The Bird of Prey Centre The National Bird of Prey Centre is an outdoor educational centre where eagles, owls, hawks and falcons from around the world can be seen on display. PLACES TO VISIT

Welcome to

LOUGH TAY

Nestled in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains lies apicturesque valley and a lake that oddly resembles our favourite alcoholic beverage – Lough Tay, or the Guinness Lake.

8 Wicklow Guide 2020

PLACES TO VISIT

N

ot only is Lough Tay beautiful to look upon, but it’s steeped in history as well. The Guinness family are said to have had the lake’s white sand imported to give it that distinctive look. This eye-catching shore was at the entrance of their 6,000 acre estate Luggala – complete with a castle and smaller lodges – which is now available for rent. Luggala is an ornate, 18th century hunting lodge that resembles a small castle. Even legends Ronnie Wood

and Mick Jagger from The Rolling Stones, Hollywood film star Charlotte Rampling, and The Beatles themselves have partied there. And they all got to enjoy this view. Along with Glendalough, the Guinness Lake is one of the most photographed spots in Wicklow. Easily one of the most beautiful spots in the country, too. If you’ve never been, plan that trip immediately. You can thank us after.

How do I get there? From Dublin, take the M50 south, then take the N11 exit toward Roundwood/Glendalough. From there, it’s under 20 minutes to Luggala Lodge where you can park up. Head for Knocknacloghoge to look down over Lough Dan, or go up Luggala mountain to avail of some incredible views over Lough Tay.

The dark peaty water of the lake, combined with its oval shape and frothy white sand, makes it appear as if you’re overlooking a large pint of Guinness, surrounded by green, rolling mountains.

IRELAND’S

HIGHEST WATERFALL Powerscourt Waterfall is Ireland’s highest at 121m (398ft.) and is 6km from the Main Estate. It is set in one of Ireland’s most beautiful parklands at the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains.

10 Wicklow Guide 2020

PLACES TO VISIT A

s you drive from the gate lodge towards the Waterfall you are surrounded by Beech, Oak, Larch and Pine trees some of which were planted over 200 years ago. Look out for the Giant Redwoods, which are native to Northern California where they may grow up to 80m high and live for 4,000 years so they are still youngsters! The Waterfall is an ideal location for summer picnics and barbecues. There is a vast amount of space to keep children entertained. There is also a playground for younger children. But be mindful of the other inhabitants of the parkland! It is a haven for wildlife and children can have fun trying to spot some of the locals – the Chaffinch, Cuckoo, Raven and the Willow Warbler. Some other inhabitants are the Sika Deer which were introduced to Ireland in 1858 and there may be a red squirrel or two. Don’t fret if you forget your picnic as there is a kiosk on site that serves everything from coffee and tea to hot-dogs and ice-cream. The kiosk is open everyday from the 1st June to the end of August and year round at weekends, if weather permits. There is ample car parking and toilet facilities at the waterfall. Dogs are welcome but they must be on a leash. Take time to explore the pathways that meander through the flora and fauna, walk along the woodland pathways and listen to the birdsong. Directions The Waterfall is located 6km from Powerscourt Estate. From Dublin City and Wexford take Exit 8. After 2 km take the first left towards Enniskerry and follow the signs for Powerscourt Waterfall. We would not recommend walking to the waterfall from Powerscourt Estate as there are no footpaths for part of the journey. Car / Taxi are the best options for visiting the waterfall.

Opening Times: • The Waterfall is closed from December 11th - December 26th at 10.30am. • Jan/Feb/Nov/Dec 10.30am – 4.00pm (Last admission 3.30pm) • Mar/Apr/Sept/Oct 10.30am – 5.30pm (Last admission – 5pm) • May/Jun/July/Aug 9.30am – 7.00pm (Last admission – 6pm) Tickets: • Adults €6, Student/OAP - €5.50 • Child (U12) €3.50, Children (U2) - Free • Family Ticket €16.00 (2 adults & up to 3 children)

“One of Monty Don’s Favourite Gardens”

One of only 3 Irish gardens with a top rating from the UK’s The Good Gardens Guide, Mount Usher is not simply one of Ireland’s greatest gardens, but it’s a world-class example of a so-called Robinsonian garden, with its relaxed informality and natural layout.

The Avoca Garden Café & Bakery

“Top Rated Irish Garden by the Good Gardens Guide” Mount Usher Gardens, with its Avoca Garden Café and Courtyard Shops is situated in the village of Ashford, just 35 minutes south of Dublin city, and close to the seaside towns of Bray, Wicklow and Arklow. The popularity of the gardens, café and shops during the summer season means that the car park can become very full in the middle of the day: but there is additional parking in the village a short walking distance away.

For delicious food to go and delicatessen. The Avoca Garden Café serves delicious meals throughout the day and we recommend that you reserve your table in advance to avoid disappointing delays. The Bakery has a wide range of Avoca ready meals, freshly baked bread, fancy cakes and many other delicatessen products besides. Mount Usher Gardens Tree Trail At Mount Usher you’ll find over 5,000 species of plant, many of them rare and exotic, all grown organically, creating a tapestry of colour throughout the seasons. A walk in Kilmacurragh Most people have never heard of Kilmacurragh Arboretum, a tree lover’s paradise half an hour south of Bray, Co Wicklow. For many years the gardens were neglected and the Queen Annestyle house was left to crumble because of an ownership dispute. It was only when the National Botanic Gardens took over the estate, in 1996 – the Land Commission had aquired it in 1976 – that its botanical treasures and champion trees were rediscovered.

The National Botanic Gardens, Kilmacurragh occupies a large estate planted during the nineteeth century by Thomas Acton in conjunction with David Moore and his son Sir Frederick Moore, curators of the National Botanic Gardens at that time. It was a period of great botanical and geographical explorations with numerous plant species from around the world being introduced to Ireland for the first time. The different soil and climatic conditions at Kilmacurragh resulted in many of these specimens succeeding there while struggling or failing at Glasnevin. Kilmacurragh is particularly famous for its conifers and rhododendron collections. Open: Winter: November to February: 9am – 4.30pm Summer: March to October 9am – 6pm. Admission: Free.
