IN SHORT Tom Stade, comedian

What brings you to Edinburgh? I have class and taste of course. I also have the good sense to be part of the Edinburgh Festival at the Assembly Rooms on George Street. What do you do? I like to think I’m a humour sculptor. I start with raw ideas and observations, chip away at them and then smooth them out with my comedy charm. Are there any up and coming comedians you rate? Rich Wilson is an underrated comedian. Jon Scott and Jonny Lynn also come to mind. They are all guys who have paid there dues and worked the circuit which is very important to me. What’s your dream? To dream big. To travel the world, to have the riches to really do it right and to be so well known that you can bring laughter to people around the world. What are the best things in life are… good memories and good times with family, friends and lovers. What would we do without them? Tom Stade Decisions, Decisions is at The Assembly Rooms from 02 to 25 August. For tickets visit www.edfringe.com.

STATE OF THE ART | 15

STATE OF THE ART Billy Connolly by John Byrne words ∙ Joshua King

H

e has made us laugh, has made us cry and is a Scottish national treasure so it is no wonder Billy Connolly’s image hangs in the Portrait Gallery. The half-a-metre high and bare-chested depiction of ‘The Big Yin’ is surrounded by smaller portraits of Connolly running naked and playing the banjo, two of his more famous hobbies. Painted to celebrate the comedian’s 60th year, John Byrne’s ‘Billy Connolly’ is one of a rich selection included in the ongoing exhibition of his work, Sitting Ducks. The exhibition, which will tour to Inverness after it closes in Edinburgh on 19 October, will also include Byrne’s depiction of actress Tilda Swinton. The 74-year-old artist and playwright was born in Paisley and has been described by Sitting Ducks curator Julie Lawson as ‘a Renaissance Man, Scotland’s not just Paisley’s’. She said: “It has been said of him that what is distinctive about him as an artist is that there is no one style - he has a chameleon quality as a painter and is able to work equally effectively in several different styles. “The exhibition will demonstrate the variety of approaches he takes to portraiture. “The popularity of a portrait of Billy Connolly is of course to a large extent due to the affection that people have for the sitter. But people are also responding to the skill (and in this case humour) of the artist too. There is often humour in Byrne’s work as well as a darker, more serious side that we will also see in the works on display.”

TALKING ABOUT Tax-free shopping

I’ve heard a little about this tax-free shopping. What’s it all about? When you shop in the UK, you pay VAT, which is essentially a sales tax on most goods. If you are a non EU resident visiting the UK you are entitled to claim a VAT refund on most goods that you buy and take home. Great, I buy things all the time. How do I get money back then? You, my dear, don’t. As I said, you need to be a non EU resident to claim the VAT back. But what about when I go on holiday? You won’t be able to claim money back for things that you buy in the EU but do keep it in mind if you are travelling outwith Europe. Innova Group and Premier Tax Free Shopping currently operate throughout Europe (for non EU nationals) and many international markets including Asia, South America, The Middle East and Russia.

If I were a non EU resident, how much could I save? The current sales tax is 20 per cent and you could claim this back on certain goods that you buy whilst in the UK. How do I find out who offers tax-free shopping? If you’re a non-EU resident in Edinburgh simply look out for signs in shops offering tax free shopping. Bet it’s a hassle to get the money back though. You just ask for a tax-free form in store when paying for your goods, fill it out, get it stamped by customs when you leave the country and post the form back using the pre-paid envelope. Is there a long wait for the money back? Nope, some airports and inland border checkpoints even offer cash refunds. Just look out for the desk or check the relevant tax free shopping website for the nearest cash refund location. This means even more shopping then, right? As you’re saving 20 per cent on most goods it would be rude not to, wouldn’t it? To find out more about Innova Taxfree UK visit www.innovataxfree.com

PLAYLIST

Forget the bagpipes because we’re more than a nation of pipers, we’ve got the very best of home grown Edinburgh talent for your summer time playlist. Whether you’re a pop princess, hip hop lover or soul diva we’ve got a showcase of our favourite Edinburgh musicians. Aimee Stanton turns up the volume with alternative hip hop group Young Fathers, guitar slamming teen Nina Nesbitt and electronic neo soul duo DarkSoul.

THE PRE-PARTY - YOUNG FATHERS Let’s go back to the summer of 2013 when the still relatively unknown, Edinburgh based alternative hip hop group, Young Fathers, were booked to play one of the city’s most established and oldest venues. During the sound check the manager made an abrupt cancellation, the reason being a fear that Young Father’s low end frequencies would cause ‘structural damage’ to the building. With a sudden cancelled gig, Young Fathers played off into a glowing musical sunset and have since been banging out their distinctive psychedelic hip hop sound to a global audience. They received rave reviews and exposure from the likes of NME, Clash Magazine, Rolling Stone and the Telegraph even boldly stated, ‘Their debut album DEAD packs more fresh musical ideas into its 36 minutes than the Brit Awards' Critics Choice category has managed in its entire six-year lifespan,” strong support for Edinburgh’s hip hop creatives. Stellar reviews and structurally anxious venues aside the threesome, Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and Graham

'G' Hastings, met and recorded in Edinburgh and have moved on to support electronic champions Simian Mobile Disco and Stanton Warriors before headlining some of the world’s most legendary clubs. Berlin’s notorious techno haven Berghain and New York’s famed Bowery Ballroom being just two that have seen the trio promote their debut album DEAD. Released in February DEAD is adventurous and bursting with life and showcases a unique compilation of tracks with political messages and societal stories with a psychedelic and hip hop sound. Young Fathers debut album also boasts melodic and lyrical intelligence combined with an effortless cool that only comes from a multicultural background. Their heritage stems from Liberia to Nigeria and Scotland and although musically born in the underrated hip hop scene of Edinburgh DEAD might actually be the liveliest example of music to come from the capital in years.

POP LOVING SING-A-LONG - NINA NESBITT Selfies, boys in bars and growing pains are on the minds of every teenage girl and Edinburgh singer/songwriter Nina Nesbitt isn’t any different.

Not many Edinburgh teenagers, or most teens in fact, can claim the launch of a music career at the hands of an internationally famed musician in Nina’s case it was indie hero Ed Sheeran who invited the 19 year old to support him on his then approaching tour. As they say, the rest is history and Nina’s rise to fame has been nothing but exceptional. The teenager who went to Balerno Community High School first strummed a guitar at 15. Four years on and the starlet has already been crowned iTunes Singer/Songwriter New Artist of the Year (2012) and Best Emerging Artist at the Scottish Music Awards (2013). The pop star kick started 2014 with the release of her debut album Peroxide which was co-produced by Jake Gosling (who has worked with Paloma Faith, Ed Sheeran and One Direction), plus close contributions from Iain Archer (known for his work with indie folk star Jake Bugg). Peroxide is bursting with infectious pop anthems that the teen generation will instantly fall for. It’s easy listening for the teens and so catchy that even the older generation will sing-a-long too. We might not all be able to instantly relate to her social commentary on life as a teenager but we will empathise with the trials and tribulations that come with growing up. Citing Debbie Harry as musical inspiration, the blonde bombshells share more than the same colour of hair.

26 | FEATURES

Both cool in persona and stage presence, Nina is doing it all on her own terms with her DIY ethnic of punk. Earlier this year she played the legendary Glastonbury festival and T in the Park. This month she’s set to perform at the upcoming V Festival. Playful in sound and performance Nina’s gigs haven’t just been Scottish sell-outs either with a fan base stretching across the pond to the USA and to her Nordic roots in Sweden.

SUNSET WIND DOWN - DARKSOUL If there was ever any suggestion that Edinburgh’s hip hop scene was nonexistent then think again. Fans of contemporary soul and hip hop will already be familiar with Edinburgh music duo DarkSoul, which is the musical creation of Nasty P, also known as Paul Rutherford, and Naledi. We can start DarkSoul’s story in the depths of Old Town where hip hop fans make the weekly pilgrimage to Bongo Club for Nasty P’s illustrious club night, I Love Hip Hop. Running every Tuesday since 2011 it’s become a

bit of an Edinburgh institution with Nasty P’s credentials attracting hip hop lovers from all over town. Not just a club promoter, Nasty P is an established DJ and producer who can count Akil from Jurassic 5, rhymester MC Oddisee, Skinnyman and his DarkSoul counterpart and singer Naledi as musical associates. DarkSoul’s contemporary soul sound comes from husky singing sensation Naledi. As a child pianist and singer, the vocalist lures listeners with her enticing and husky sounds. With the kind of voice you expect to hear from a more established artist, the Edinburgh singer evidently has tremendous potential as a singer. The DarkSoul E.P is a nine track soul meets hip hop album with a clear electronic infusion. Its cutting edge sound in the form of Shot Ya Down and Regrets have been produced in a mature and perfectly effortless way proving DarkSoul’s fresh sound may actually prove to be a new genre in music. DarkSoul have already received praise from reputable musicians. Jazz singer/songwriter Jamie Cullum even handpicked DarkSoul to support him on the 2013 Edinburgh leg of his tour and this year the couple have played at the Kelburn Garden Party and AudioSoup festivals. They are also set to play at the Linkylea festival.

MY I-ON EDINBURGH

Preston Mommsen photo ∙ Susie Lowe

It’s been a big year for professional cricket player Preston and the Scotland cricket team who recently qualified for the 2015 World Cup. The 26-year-old Scotland vice captain grew up in South Africa but moved to Edinburgh in 2007 and has never looked back: “I definitely regard Edinburgh as home, and I feel very lucky to live here.” What gives Edinburgh its edge? The rich diversity of its people, culture, and food. I’m fortunate to do a lot of travelling while representing Scotland, but, I’ve never visited a city as beautiful and unique as Edinburgh. Is there anything that would place Edinburgh more firmly on the map? More direct long haul flights to and from city. The city’s downfall… Unemptied black bins and the seagulls that follow. Your preferred areas in Edinburgh. I spend a lot of time in Stockbridge, there’s so much on offer and you’re always guaranteed a great vibe. The city’s best kept secret? The cricket teas at Carlton Cricket Club.

BEAUTY Lucinda Ellery

Driven by personal experience, hair extension specialist Lucinda Ellery travels across the UK to her studios in London, Edinburgh and beyond to provide hair loss management and hair replacement solutions for hair loss sufferers. She’s now branched out to the US and has a string of celebrity clientele including Cheryl Cole and Kimberley Walsh who appreciate the benefits of hair extensions. I enjoy my work because… it brings me a lot of joy to give beautiful hair to women who thought they’d never have the chance again – whether through alopecia, chemotherapy or TTM (a condition where women pull out their hair). The biggest misconception about hair extensions is… some people think they damage hair and in the wrong hands, they can do, but when good quality extensions are applied by qualified professionals they are a fantastic beauty tool. What’s the best way to update your look from day to night? Mix it up – if you wear your hair down generally in the day, then go for an up do at night. Lashings of lashes and lots of bling and jewellery are a must. Top beauty tip… moisturise your skin every day. And, if it’s long enough, tie your hair up when you sleep at night so it doesn’t knot.

STYLE

Bec Astley Clarke As founder and chairman of Astley Clarke, the award-winning online store selling fine women’s jewellery, Bec Astley Clarke has come a long way since studying politics and philosophy at Edinburgh University. She launched the luxury jewellery brand back in 2006 and now ships to 100 countries worldwide. My favourite place to shop in Edinburgh is… Harvey Nichols for make-up and contemporary fashion. I also love the Stockbridge Market for fresh local produce. The person whose style I admire most is… my mother’s. She had the most fabulous wardrobe which included vintage ostrich feather jackets and floor length hand painted silk dresses. I also love Diane von Furstenberg and Alice Temperley. My favourite recent find was… a navy velvet blazer from Zadig & Voltaire - perfect for office and evening wear. I’m trying to… expand my collection of silk shirts. They are my uniform, along with jeans and pretty flats. I’m a bit of a... magpie for jewellery and handbags. My jewellery collection includes pieces passed down from my mother and a lot of Astley Clarke.

YOU AND ME

Jennifer Douglas and Kyle Boggie

New arrivals...

photo ∙ Susie Lowe

High school sweethearts and now engaged to be married, Jennifer Douglas and Kyle Boggie have been together for 14 years. Kyle does marketing and advertising for City Cabs and Jennifer works at the bank. Here they talk to i-on about love, life and gatecrashing sleepovers. Jennifer on Kyle: “We met back in high school. We had never spoken until I was at a friend’s sleepover and Kyle and friends sneaked around to the back of the house to give us a fright at the window. A lot has happened over the years and we’ve shared every minute. I’d say that’s why we have such a good understanding of each other now. I’m the organised one and I’d like to think I’m pretty supportive too. We both encourage each other to try new things. “We moved in together three years ago and we looked at this as the next step in our relationship. We spent a lot of time together but living together was a different challenge, starting with agreeing on a colour to paint the living room. Kyle helped by taking up golf and letting me get on with it. “We’re always making each other laugh and it’s great having someone to share things with, including the dishes.” Kyle on Jennifer: “I genuinely think the hardest part of our relationship is trying to convince Jen to watch what I want on the television - football included. I was pretty young when we first met but I think it was love at first sight. We’re still together so it must have been. Jen is the cement to my brick wall; she keeps everything together. She’s also really organised and keeps me grounded, I need that. Jen is the most unselfish person I know and I love that about her, we’re always there for each other and we always encourage each other. We’re getting married in September next year. First comes love then comes marriage… You know the rest.”

FESTIVAL LIFE IN GREATER GRASSMARKET

Edinburgh’s local businesses share their free festival secrets. RED DOG MUSIC Red Dog Music is a Festival lifeline for musicians needing new or replacement kit. "We're really busy in August," says manager Alex Marten, "but I always make time to enjoy what's going on nearby. There are always amazing buskers in the Grassmarket but the Festival brings out the best of them. One regular, Danny Mullin, has written a song about the Grassmarket with the lyric, 'There's honey in the beehive'. That's a great description of the area: humming with activity and full of good stuff." Alex loves listening to the Grassmarket’s Festival buskers on a bench with a cup of Blue Hawaiian from HULA Juice Bar. Red Dog Music, 1 Grassmarket, www.reddogmusic.co.uk

GOLDEN HARE BOOKS Golden Hare Books is holding a free event for little literati on Saturday 16 August at 11am, with children’s author Jackie Morris (author and illustrator of East of the Sun, West of the Moon, The Cat and the Fiddle and, most appropriately, the beautiful Song of the Golden Hare). “Parents can pull up a seat and have a cuppa while Jackie hosts story time and colouring-in for the children,” says manager, Ian Macbeth. All are invited, but please book by emailing mail@goldenharebooks.com Golden Hare Books, 102 West Bow, www.goldenharebooks.com/new-little-artists

MAPLE ARTS & PICTURE FRAMING Gary Mckenzie of Maple Arts & Picture Framing has been so moved by the Grassmarket’s artistic heartbeat that he’s turned his framing business into a full-time art gallery. In August, Maple Arts gives over the shop to new and emerging artists from Edinburgh College of Art and established local artists. “The Grassmarket is ideal for artists with its unrivalled views of Edinburgh Castle, café culture and year-round events. In August the area pulsates with Festival vibe. We based our business here knowing that it is a magnet for tourists and locals for independent shopping, arts and entertainment,” says Gary. FOOD AND DRINK READER AWARDS 2014

AND THE WINNERS ARE… The cocktails have been shaken and the coffee has been brewed. The steaks are cooked and the puddings are sweeter than ever. We’ve got the results of the first i-on food and drink reader awards and a guide to the tastiest cafes, bistros and restaurants and bars around town, all voted by i-on readers. Competition was always fierce and very tight at times. But the votes came in their many thousands as i-on readers nominated from a shortlist of food and drink venues picked from our favourite areas in town; City Centre, West End and Lothian Road, Old Town, Stockbridge (including Canonmills), Leith, and Bruntsfield and Morningside. See if your favourite haunt has been given the official i-on stamp of approval and crowned winner in its category of the i-on food and drink reader awards…

The Devil’s Advocate

BEST BAR WINNERS Old Town - The Devil’s Advocate Hidden up Advocate’s Close in the depths of Old Town and inside an old Victorian Pump House is the boozy retreat of The Devil’s Advocate. Ideal if you’re a whisky connoisseur as 200 bottles line the shelves alongside a stunning selection of beers, wines and spirits. We love the hidden gem appeal of the place and the very good food. There’s also a great secluded spot for al fresco drinking upstairs until 10pm too. 9 Advocate's Close, EH1 1ND, Tel: 0131 225 4465, www.devilsadvocateedinburgh.co.uk Second place Bar Kohl and third place Under the Stairs. Cocktails in the city centre… Tonic This was one of our closest knit competitions, probably due to the high quality of cocktail bars and high volume of cocktail drinkers in the city, but Tonic bar on Castle Street stole the crown for best bar for cocktails in the city centre.

Informed bartenders will make you anything from a Mojito to their in-house classics like the Smoked XO Old Fashioned and Rob Roy. All mixed up to a backbeat of funky tunes, these cocktails will be just the tonic for your night out. 34A N Castle St, EH2 3BN, Tel: 0131 225 6431, www.bar-tonic.co.uk Second place Panda & Sons and third place Bramble. Drinks in the city centre… Treacle Get the monkey off your back at Treacle with a stop off in the city centre’s best bar for drinks. Small in size and big in personality (and anime art work) its location on the ‘anything goes’ Broughton Street already sets it in good stead. But it’s the considered drinks collection and inventive list of cocktails, long and short, that’s won our vote on this occasion. 39-41 Broughton St, EH1 3JU, Tel: 0131 557 0627, www.treacleedinburgh.co.uk Second place Joseph Pearce and third place Queens Arms.

48 | FOOD AND DRINK Night out in the city centre… 99 Hanover Street What does A Guy Called Gerald, Gilles Peterson and every established DJ in Edinburgh have in common? 99 Hanover Street that’s what. The city centre venue is officially the best bar for a night out in the city centre and with a clientele of beard loving cool kids and stylish after work drinkers, you’ll never just stay for one drink here. 99 Hanover St, EH2 1DJ, Tel: 0131 225 8200, awww.99hanoverstreet.com Second place Voodoo Rooms and third place Opal Lounge. West End - Sygn Well deserved of best bar in the West End title, Sygn bar is one of the first of its kind - way before ‘style bar’ became a buzzword and definitely before the term became somewhat passe - it has moved with the times in an ever changing bar scene and still comes out on top. Boozy milkshakes, serious spirits and gourmet Haute Dogs and burgers are just three of the reasons this bar’s a winner with i-on readers. 15 Charlotte Lane, EH2 4QZ, Tel: 0131 225 6060, www.sygn.co.uk Second place Hanging Bat and third place Indigo Yard. Leith - The Lioness of Leith If you find yourself in the urban safari that is Leith, step inside the lion’s den at The Lioness of Leith for a cocktail swigging good time. Since opening its doors in December last year the bar/bistro has become a refuge for the cooler cats around Leith seeking gastro grub, a strong cocktail and a young vibe. 21-25 Duke St, EH6 8HH, Tel: 0131 629 0580, www.facebook.com/Thelionessofleith Second place Nobles and third place Bond No. 9.

Hamilton’s

99 Hanover Street

Bruntsfield and Morningside - The Blackbird A just out of town local boozer with style and substance, fly into the Blackbird and see why this drinking nest has been voted Bruntsfield and Morningside’s best bar. It’s loved amongst locals and visitors for the fab beer garden when the sun shines and the all day food menu to satiate appetites whenever hunger strikes. We also know that this month there’s a great line up of acoustic sessions and stand-up fun times on the menu. 37-39 Leven St, EH3 9LH, Tel: 0131 228 2280, www.theblackbirdedinburgh.co.uk Second place Golf Tavern and third place Montpeliers. Stockbridge and Canonmills - Hamilton’s The first bar in Stockbridge to have a cocktail menu, nowadays it’s a huge hit every day of the week and at last Hamilton’s has won the recognition of i-on readers as the best bar in Stockbridge and Canonmills. Quite an accolade in an area that’s renowned for its independent food and drink venues. Hamilton’s provides a chilled drinking environment suitable for a day time catch up over coffee or night time laughs over cocktails. 16-18 Hamilton Pl, EH3 5AU, Tel: 0131 226 4199, www.hamiltonsedinburgh.co.uk Second place The Other Place and third place The Bon Vivant.

They’ve done it well too and the tasting menus take Indian cuisine to a level not yet experienced in the city, and not a korma in sight. Fishers in the City

City centre for lunch - L'Escargot Bleu We predicted back in 2009 that L’Escargot Bleu would soon bask in the limelight as one of Edinburgh’s favourite restaurants. We’re delighted to award it then the accolade of best restaurant for lunch in the city centre. A proper little taste of Gallic charm, this bistro style restaurant doesn’t have to try too hard at what it does. It just does it very well. Following the ethos ‘from nature to plate’ the freshest Scottish ingredients and creative cooking combine to deliver a menu of pub grub classics with a very welcome twist. 1 Comely Bank Rd, EH4 1DT, Tel: 0131 332 6281, www.scranandscallie.com Second place The Raeburn and joint third place Rollo/Rafael’s.

YSL

The smoky eye From a teal metallic version to shades of black, the autumn winter 2014 runways were awash with smoky eyes. Dramatic and intense, here YSL head make-up artist Fred Letailluer explains how to recreate the look Cara Delevingne (pictured) is rocking in the new YSL Autumn Winter Black Fetish campaign. “It all begins with creating the perfect base,” explains Fred. “Once you’ve created that apply Touche Éclat around the eyes to remove signs of fatigue. For the smoky eye that Cara is wearing, use the YSL Couture Palette Fétiche (pictured above). Begin with the dark bronze in the middle of the palette and apply it with a small eye shadow brush on the upper and lower lash line. Next dust

the matte black shade in the palette on the outer corner of the eye, using the lower lash line as a guide to create the lower part. Bring the shadow up halfway between the eye socket and the brow and soften the edges using a large blending eye shadow brush. Finally, highlight underneath the brow using the lightest colour in the palette. Intensify the top and bottom lashes with black mascara and re-create the famous Cara Delevingne power brow with the YSL Dessin des Sourcils in a darker shade like No.5 to frame the eye make-up to perfection.” YSL products are available in Harvey Nichols and Debenhams.

TRIED AND TESTED ESPA Life @ Gleneagles words ∙ Sarah Johnston

T

here are certain times in life when enough is enough. For me, I’d reached that point. Enough of feeling stressed and enough of talking about starting over with my wellbeing but never actually getting round to it. Probably because of feeling overwhelmed, lethargic and... you get the picture. The Spa at Gleneagles certainly does get the picture with its ESPA Life wellness programme, a new approach to health and wellbeing. Recruiting some of the best alternative health and fitness experts to offer a wide range of treatments and personal programmes, their aim is simple: to help us feel great, inside and out. The treatment programme is inspiring, including a range of ESPA Life Day packages addressing everything from detoxing and skin issues to fitness and relaxation. And so, in some severe need of some revitalising, I opted for the Relax ESPA Life Day Spa package, £145, inclusive of one treatment (advanced reflexology or craniosacral therapy), a two course lunch served in Deseo at The Spa and use of the awardwinning thermal suites and leisure club.

Indulging in a morning immersed in the seriously luxe thermal suites is restorative on its own. Enjoying a delicious and super nutritional two course lunch is equally uplifting. And then there’s the treatment (I opted for Advanced Reflexology). Having never experienced reflexology before, senior practitioner Louise, a qualified naturopath, instantly put me at ease and the treatment was seriously impressive. Don’t get reflexology confused with a fancy foot massage as this is a gentle therapeutic treatment that encourages the body to naturally restore and maintain a healthy balance. Louise expertly worked on my feet and lower leg, highlighting areas of ‘congestion’ in my body which, as she very gently focused on, felt hot and extremely tender. It was fascinating. She flagged up congestion in my digestive system, including my gallbladder and liver, and as I have a family history of related illnesses, this is something I am now addressing. The treatment was also wonderfully relaxing too and one hour 20 minutes flew by. Before I knew it, my day was over and I left the Spa at Gleneagles totally relaxed, refreshed and motivated. From now on, my health and wellbeing comes first. Highly recommended. ESPA life at The Gleneagles Hotel, Auchterarder, Perthshire, PH3 1NF, Tel: 01764 694332, www.gleneagles.com.

OUR WEDDING, OUR WAY

Newlyweds Ian and Amanda Southey, married on 14 September 2013, share their big day with i-on. photos ∙ Mirrorbox

I

an and Amanda got married exactly one year on from his proposal at Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod, where Jaws was filmed. “I’ve wanted to get married in Fife since I was a little girl. As a family we spent many happy times in the area and I have great childhood memories. My mum now lives there permanently and the setting around Elie church with the beach and surroundings is stunning. “We were clear that we didn’t want a more formal hotel wedding and chose Anstruther Easter Town Hall as the venue for the reception, for its relaxed and informal vibe but mostly because we could put our own stamp on it.

It was pretty much a blank canvas apart from the stage which was already decked out with a backdrop of fairy lights - which tied in perfectly with our fairy tale, enchantment, secret garden type theme. “I always knew what I wanted for our wedding day,” says Amanda. “It was there in my head and Pinterest helped to bring it to life. I used a fantastic events company, Supernova Events, to decorate the hall and they supplied most of the decoration too. They have a big warehouse which I browsed to see what they had and what I liked. Obviously I knew what I wanted and stuck to my guns throughout and I was delighted with the final result. I didn’t go crazy on colour

84 | I-ON WEDDINGS keeping things simple in a mix of classic white and silver, with loads of fairy lights wrapped around the pillars and stairs and icy blue uplighters. The chairs were covered in white with silver bows, white and silver pom poms hung from the ceiling and I had white birdcages on all the tables filled with ferns, greens and gypsophila. “It was carte blanche with the menu too and we used a local caterer who has premises right next to the venue, and again we chose exactly what we liked, in this case, mozzarella and tomato salad, homemade lasagne and garlic bread, and fresh strawberries with lashings of cream and ice cream. It was delicious and went down an absolute treat. Being a bit hearty was a good idea too as there was no corkage charge on the booze either so Champagne, wine and my favourite pink Prosecco flowed freely all night, making it possibly the most drunken wedding I’ve been to! “Looking back, I wouldn’t do anything differently on the day. Everything from the pre wedding get together at the Ship Inn to toast the wedding the night before, to the location and weather (the sun shone the whole weekend) and sharing our wedding day with 125 of our favourite friends and family was perfect for us. And we topped it all off with a honeymoon in Sorrento and Capri, which we had chosen mostly for our love of good food and wine.”

Paris... Je t’aime words Nicky Howden

W

ith its grand architecture, iconic landmarks and broad tree lined avenues filled with fine dining restaurants and designer boutiques, Paris truly is one the world’s most beautiful and romantic cities and it's easy to see why the French capital is the ultimate getaway for couples. It takes less than two hours to get to Paris from Edinburgh and, with direct flights from Air France coming in at around £100 return out of season, it was an alluring destination for some time out with my other half. Choosing our accommodation and whittling down the tick list of things to do proved slightly trickier. You see, depending on your budget, taste and preferred district, you’ll be spoilt for choice with accommodation in Paris. In fact, finding the right place can almost feel like a minefield. For our weekend break a central location was essential, we wanted to make the most of every minute and travelling by foot - or taxi - opposed to the metro made all the difference. And so, we splurged on the super luxe Mandarin Oriental to experience Paris in style.

Located on rue Saint-Honoré, in the heart of the luxury shopping district, the hotel’s subtle façade leaves little indication of what lies behind the doors, but as soon as you step inside you can’t help but be impressed by the contemporary interiors and outstanding attention to detail. The Mandarin Oriental feels exclusive and that’s because it is. A tranquil haven in the middle of the city centre, the five star hotel runs a slick operation offering first class service and even a glass of chilled Champagne on arrival. The rooms, the bathroom of which possibly covered half the size of my flat at home, were sumptuous and immaculate. And the outdoor dining area as pretty as a picture. It would have been all too easy to forget the outside world and succumb to the hotel’s charms. However, with the surrounding designer shops and eateries, the picturesque Tuileries Garden and The Louvre Museum, home to some of the finest art work in the world, all just a short stroll away and vying for attention we managed to leave the sumptuous surroundings and venture out.

PARIS... JE T’AIME | 87

Mandarin Oriental

Mandarin Oriental spa pool

Of course a visit to Paris wouldn’t be the same without an obligatory trip to the Eiffel Tower. Offering some of the most breathtaking views of the city, skip the queue and buy your ticket in advance then get yourself to the top deck and toast your efforts with a glass of Champagne. From there make your way to the water's edge and take a relaxing trip down the River Seine onboard a river cruise – there’s lots of companies offering similar trips and it’s a great way to see many of Paris’ famous landmarks and sights. By night try the legendary Fouquet's restaurant on Avenue des Champs-Élysées. It’s a chance to take a step back in time and experience traditional Parisian grandeur, style and food. To take it off the beaten track, lower the price tag and up the ante on cocktails check out Little Red Door, a hip little Parisian speakeasy style cocktail bar that does some great food too. For something even quirkier make sure you pop into Candelaria taqueria and cocktail bar. Embracing the hidden bar concept, it’s tucked away behind a door at the back of the tacos place. Inside it’s cool, rustic

and atmospheric, full of Parisians chilling out drinking good cocktails – just get there early to avoid a queue to get in. Paris provided everything I expected, and more. From amazing architecture, culture and sightseeing to gastronomy and fashion on a whole new level, we fell in love.

PLACE IN THE SUN Montenegro has always been a relaxed playground for Hollywood royalty like Sofia Loren, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. With 290 kilometres of Mediterranean coastline and lakeside towns like Budva and Herceg Novi, it’s a breathtaking paradise for relocation. Kotor (pictured), which boasts Europe’s southernmost fjord, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site favoured by foreign investors. Ideal for ambitious homeowners in need of a project, you could pick up an outside building for around £100,000 according to Channel 4 Homes.

DID YOU KNOW…? According to research from Santander Insurance more than three quarters of planned property purchases in the next two years will be made jointly, with two in five of these transactions between friends, family members and unmarried couples.

KERB APPEAL First impressions count when it comes to selling a property but remember it’s not just the interior that counts. “Kerb appeal can be particularly important if you live on a road with high footfall - properties with a prominent For Sale board and an attractive exterior can often prompt viewing enquiries from passers-by,” explains Robert Carroll of Mov8 Real Estate. “My top tips to maximise kerb appeal would be to clean and remove any rubbish and ensure the areas in front of your house and garden are clutter-free. You should also remove weeds, trim plants and add some greenery or a window box to make it visually appealing. A lick of paint on the front door also works wonders.” For more information visit www.mov8realestate.com

A

uthors, dancers, magicians, the next big thing in the world of comedy or just the travelling tourist, whoever you want to let your property to during the festival, here’s a how to guide from ESPC lettings manager Orlaith Brogan and managing director of Dickins, Louise Dickins. “There are usually two types of festival tenants,” Orlaith Brogan describes, “those working in the festival such as

performers and production staff, and visitors to the city. Both tenants have high standards and are prepared to pay premium rents to be housed as close to the festival hub as possible. When deciding what rent to ask for your home, you should consider location, how many people the property can house, condition and size. Just be realistic with prices.”

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION | 91

Of course, high demand on Edinburgh properties in August does put an optimistic spin on rental prices for the duration of the festival as Louise explains. “If letting for the whole month of the festival, flats let from £1,650 for a one bedroom apartment to as much as £10,000 for a beautiful townhouse.” Remember that whatever the price you set, it should be inclusive of utilities, broadband connection, telephone line (tenants pay for calls) and any extra costs such as stairwell maintenance. As most festival tenants want to be in with the action, the location of your property will always be a deciding factor on the rental price. Check out for new venues near your home.

Five ways to get your property festival ready: 1. Professional photographs can be used for a couple of years and stand out against the competition. C 2. Always take deposits from festival tenants at the time of booking, with the full rental figure paid in advance.M 3. Be ready for changeovers in between lets and have Y spare linen ready so you can change the sheets and towels and wash the used ones at home. Provide CM cleaning products for the festival tenants so it is easy MY for them to clear up after themselves. 4. Leave instructions on how to operate the heating, CY hot water and all electrical equipment. CMY 5. Make sure all keys work – newly cut keys can stick and festival tenants often get home late at night andK don’t want to be stuck outside.

Venues are added every year and this year, for example, Quartermile development is in high demand for guests wanting a quality contemporary apartment, as well as the ever popular areas of Southside, Royal Mile, Pleasance and Grassmarket. Target your prospective tenants wisely though. “If you feel your property is ideally located for performers in the festival, Marchmont or Newington or even the Old Town, it is worth using a festival agency that has great relationships with the festival performers. They can market your property to the performers and hopefully the property can be let out for the full festival period,” Orlaith explains. For more information on letting a property during the festival contact Dickins, 17 Dundas St, EH3 6QG, Tel: 0131 558 1108, www.dickins.co.uk or ESPC, 85 George St, EH2 3ES, Tel: 0131 624 8000, www.espc.com.

ICONIC EDINBURGH Princes Street words ∙ David Hicks

T

he name Princes Street is synonymous with Edinburgh, but its architecture is often overlooked by city residents. In fact most of its buildings are now listed and in amongst the modern stores are some real treasures. Princes Street is part of the New Town plan designed by James Craig in 1768, and took its name from the sons of King George III. In stark contrast to today, it started out as a residential street with the first inhabitants moving in during the 1770s. Many of the original houses still exist, although they are now often heavily disguised. Next time you’re passing look out for No.95 Princes Street, now Hector Russell’s kilt shop, the last surviving completely intact Georgian town house. Here you can still see the basic design of a building with three storeys and sunken basement, as laid down in the regulations in 1781. The first residents of Princes Street must have been a fairly adventurous bunch, as it was not a particularly desirable place to live. The Nor’ Loch had only just been drained and

resembled a muddy swamp, the ‘earthern mound’ was just being formed from all the excavations, and the street had a growing reputation for being rather windy. Fairly quickly however the character of the street started to change, and by Victorian times it was known for its shops and hotels, which brought new styles of architecture. A good example of this is Debenhams, built in 1884 as the Conservative Club. The exterior has a lot of careful detailing, but a key feature is the spectacular staircase with its ornate stained glass windows, now moved to the back of the store. In 1978 Debenhams extended to take in the building next door, and today you can still see an intriguing survival of its former grandeur. Hidden on the first floor amongst the clothes racks is the oak panelled Gladstone Library, a remnant of the Liberal Club which used to be on this site. Perhaps the best example of this new generation of architecture for the street is Jenners department store. It was built in 1895 and designed in a Renaissance style, with a wealth of intricate carving decorating the exterior, including

female figures or ‘caryatids’ symbolically showing that they are the support of the house. The building also used cutting edge technology for the day, with a fire proof structure made of iron columns, steel beams and ‘Stuart’s Granolithic’ floors. In 1949 the Abercrombie Plan proposed radical changes to Princes Street, with extensive re-development and only three historic buildings considered worthy of retention. In 1967 a report recommended building first floor balconies to form a continuous walkway across the front of the entire street. The plan never took off, but you can see a small complete section at British Home Stores. Built in 1967 it shows just how far architecture had moved on since the Edwardian grandeur of Jenners, and today is a listed building in its own right. David Hicks is communications manager at Edinburgh World Heritage, a charity devoted to conserving and promoting the city’s World Heritage Site. For more information visit www.ewht.org.uk

OUR FAVOURITE FIND Those of us with the most up-to-date smart phones carry around as much photographic kit in our pockets as the average Hollywood studio had 20 years ago. Why is it then that phone camera flashes as so universally dim? The Nova puts an end to that. The same size as a credit card, this portable blue-tooth enabled flash is made up of 40 yellow and white lights which add a professional touch to any photo and help you snap pictures in the dark. The Nova costs £35. www.wantnova.com

WHO SAID THAT?

DID YOU KNOW...? ...the patron saint of chefs died with a joke? St Lawrence was commanded by the prefect of Rome to turn over the riches of the church to the city. When Lawrence refused and quickly spread the wealth of the church out to the poorest in the city, the angry prefect had him tied to a grate over fire. Legend has it that after the martyr had suffered for a long time, he cheerfully said, ‘turn me over, I’m well done,’ and he has been the patron of chefs and cooks ever since.

Three o’clock is always too late or too early for anything you want to do.
