A DAY IN THE (WORK)LIFE…

THE DIGITAL NOMAD Katie Macleod, 27, is a graphic designer who took a job in a London advertising agency after graduating from Napier University. Two years later, she quit to embrace a nomadic lifestyle working freelance from all over the globe.

“

From the very moment I accepted my 9-5 office job, I knew my heart was elsewhere. I spent two years dreaming, researching and saving then I was ready to make the leap.

Travel had been my focus since high school and my decision to resign from my job was fueled by years of manifesting a life that would include as much of it as possible.

Setting off two months later, I felt liberated. My first country was Singapore, where I stayed with a friend, then I headed to Malaysia alone. At first, I felt on-guard travelling solo but by the time I reached Indonesia, or more specifically Bali (a popular hotspot for like-minded

digital nomads), I settled in nicely to the culture of remote working with other freelancers and entrepreneurs.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, I returned to my family home in Inverness but I had no intention of staying put for long. Many people had some sort of lockdown project, mine was converting a van into my home on wheels. It was my saving grace to being flightless. My first proper trip was last year to Lewis and Harris. The fact that I was watching the Aurora Borealis from my van within the first few nights, verified to me that this was an adventure worth pursuing.

For me, living the nomadic lifestyle is a long-term decision. Right now, I’m in a park-up overlooking the Three Sisters in Glencoe. I’m not sure where I’m heading tomorrow or the next day, but I’ll keep an eye on the weather and see where the wind takes me. In the upcoming weeks, I will be spending time in Spain (on the hunt for warmer weather), before flying to Abu Dhabi then the island of Socotra in Yemen (for some muchneeded time away from any internet connection).

Before being a digital nomad, my workday schedule was decided for me: I’d grudgingly wake up at 7am, trudge to my office through the crowds of central London, complete projects in time for the next, then begin my journey back home to feel tired whilst I wait for the next day to begin. These days, I wake up in my own time and when I feel ready, I remind myself of any meetings, or deadlines, that are due. Then, I work out how I will complete these tasks around what I had wanted to do that day. I might want to prioritise sightseeing, meeting fellow travellers, watching a sunset, going for a hike or a flight. The work tasks are moulded around my own personal intentions and I can work for any employer in the world – all I really need is a stable internet connection.

THE GLOBETROTTER Danielle Baillie, 35, runs The Soulful Society, a platform providing counselling and coaching to those wishing to live a more conscious lifestyle.

Last new year’s eve, she jumped on a one-way flight to Bangkok with her husband and two children.

“

My partner and I met while travelling Australia and I was always aware that our life wouldn’t be lived in one place. In the last 10 years we have moved six times, travelled back and forward to Australia and been on

a six-month world trip before our son Rocco started school. But then we did stay still for a while, buying a house in Edinburgh and settling into normal life. During the pandemic however, we realised we had got caught up working, studying and the general rat race and had forgotten about living. We knew what we had to do so we set about making that happen. We rented out our house and saved for a full year before we were ready.

When we flew from Edinburgh to Bangkok on 31st of December 2021, we felt scared, excited, overwhelmed and pretty stressed but we also felt 100% sure that we were doing the right thing.

And so far, it has been a dream. We’ve only been on the road for two months,

Freedom is without doubt my top value, so I built my brand with the intention of working remotely. Time zones can be a challenge, but we have made it work. With my existing client base, we structure one-to-one calls, and my group work commitments are all held on zoom. I wake up before the kids around 6am and I usually work until 10am. We then have breakfast together, and I spend the day with Robert and the kids exploring, travelling and being in the moment. Then, when the kids are in bed, around 8pm, I will work until 10/11pm. Some days are different to others, especially on travelling days, but working remotely, on the balcony or the beach watching the sunrise, and having the flexibility to prioritise living first, has been a game changer.

but it has been filled with so many adventures already. The highlight for me was visiting Chiang Mai in Thailand, I fell in love with an eco-resort called Chai Lai Orchid who I now work with, providing support to their charity ‘Daughters Rising’.

At the moment, we are in Koh Lipe, a tiny little island off Thailand. Next, we plan to go to Bangkok then fly to Jakarta, then Bali. From there possibly Australia but we are desperate to visit Japan too so who knows? We just go with the flow and trust that we are going where we are meant to be. We have no idea how long we will be away either. We left Edinburgh without any expectation, only the intention to live the way we wanted.

THE ISLAND DWELLER Rachael Grieve, 41, is a director of wonderhouse, a Leith-based communications agency. She moved to Ibiza with her husband and daughter at the end of 2020 when the second lockdown loomed.

“

Living in Ibiza had never been our intention but during the summer of 2020, it just came to me. We had taken January off to travel around Asia for a month, and we had begun to consider what we wanted from life and how to bring up our daughter. One day, we were talking about painting the hall and I said: ‘or we could move to Ibiza for six months?’. It was a throwaway comment but thinking about it, it started to make sense. It certainly seemed the most fun option and we’ve spent a lot of holidays on the island so it wasn’t completely unknown. We started to look into

things and slowly everything fell into place. We rented out our house and on 17th December, we set off.

It felt surreal to be emigrating while the rest of the world was staying home. The airports were empty but everything went to plan and my daughter and I were in our new home by 8pm the same evening. My husband was there to welcome us, having driven to Ibiza the week before with our dog, all our belongings and all the Christmas presents.

The level of freedom you get from moving somewhere new is incredible.

It allows you to start afresh with no ingrained habits and to figure who you really are. The hardest part was always knowing if we were doing the right thing for my daughter. When we moved, she was in primary three and really happy with school but due to the pandemic, she was mostly being home schooled. My dad encouraged me that the move would give his granddaughter new opportunities and of course, he was right – we

Before lockdown, I would drop my daughter at school and walk to the Shore where the office is based. The main difference now is that most work happens outside, in the sunshine. I drive my daughter to school for 9, walk the dog along the beach and, in the warmer months, head for a swim before going home to catch up on emails and calls before heading to a studio or cafe for a meeting. After school, my daughter’s play dates are on the beach or by the pool.

It still feels surreal to be creating strategies or having client meetings on Salines beach but not a day goes by that I’m not grateful for this opportunity. enrolled her in a French school so she’s learning French and Spanish.

And, like us, she loves it here.

We’ve been here 14 months now, and we’ve decided to stop setting deadlines. While it works for us all, and everyone is happy, then this is where we’ll be.

W

hen Olympic Park was built in 2012, I was a London resident and like most of the city, I was amazed at the transformation of the forgotten East End. Returning ten years later, I am once again dumbfounded. In my time, you’d only head to Stratford for Westfield or sport but now, there’s a whole new community in the former Athlete’s Village. Wide paved walkways weave around green spaces, ponds and water features are filled with wildlife, and cafes and bars are thrumming with life. It seems like the hipsters of Shoreditch and Dalston have all grown up, had kids and moved to E20. But the East Village has also attracted some seriously big hoteliers – not least, The Hilton Group who recently opened their Curio Collection hotel, The Gantry, here.

When I arrive off the train from King’s Cross (a mere 7 minutes away on the high-speed train), it’s a relief to step into an immaculate lobby and be greeted by glowing, friendly faces. The same cannot be said of my own.

Having taken an early train from Waverley, I am feeling tired and grubby so I am grateful for the speedy check-in.

Hopping in a lift and up, up, up, to my room (one of 290), I feel the tension slip from my shoulders the second I am over the threshold. Immediately dropping my bags and sinking into crisp white sheets, I take in the view – and what a view. Floor to ceiling windows look out onto the whole of London, I can even see the familiar shape of The Gherkin piercing the clouds.

After a blissfully powerful shower and a strong coffee courtesy of the in- room machine, it’s down to the first floor for cocktails and dinner in The Union Social, the hotel’s all-day bar and restaurant. There’s something for everyone on the menu from small plates to tailormade grains and salads. It’s quiet but it’s easy to picture this space bustling with people – enjoying something sparking in the Coupe bar, heading outside to sit by a firepit on the terrace or tucking into sharing plates on the velvet sofas.

The Gantry make look like a behometh Hilton from the outside but inside, everything from the welcome to the décor feels much more personal, individual and chic. And there’s more to come too – this year sees the opening of a rooftop bar and terrace and a hipster provisions store, Stratford Grocer & Co. It’s all part of the hotel’s aim to offer locals and visitors alike a true taste of East London, and more reasons to want to return. I certainly will.

f all the nicknames bestowed upon Panko, our lovable eight-month-old cockapoo, none felt more fitting than “Lord Pankington” when staying at the Schloss Roxburghe, a 12th century majestic manor house in Kelso. Indeed, whilst he napped on a luxurious tweed mattress (initially presented with a homemade shortbread bone that didn’t touch the sides), we too felt like royalty awaking in starchy linen bliss, in our four-poster king to sip on coffee and watch as the early morning fog, lit by sunrise, gently lifted over the manicured croquet lawn.

This was our first time staycationing with Panko and it might have just ruined us. From fresh logs intentionally thrown onto the Drawing Room’s grand roaring fire, perfectly timed with the end of our picturesque countryside stroll, to the unnecessarily kind plate of haggis brought to our table at dinner, should Panko be feeling left out whilst we tucked into ours - there was no shortage of considered small touches to make our stay that bit more enjoyable. We ate in the oak panelled, tartan carpeted, totally charming library bar; a cosy and suitably elegant dog-friendly alternative to the main Sunlaws restaurant. The room oozes Scottishness, in a stylish, classy way, and that extended through to the multiple menus peppered with produce from their very own estate.

The evening drew to a close with a romantic night time swing onlooking the lit up turret of the hotel; it felt like something out of a movie (in my head I was Keira Knightly in Atonement), a

peaceful moment shared only between us and the deep soft hooting owls. It all now felt like ours; a much needed retreat from city centre life, our own blissful home away from home.

S

et on a family-run working farm, The Hideaway Experience is a couple’s retreat at the foot of the Sidlaw Hills in Angus, north of Dundee, where you are guaranteed absolute privacy and quality time away together to switch off and reconnect. The intention of owners, Caroline and Ross Millar, was to create modern, luxurious, eco-friendly properties more akin to a city hotel suite, but that would blend naturally into the environment of the farm. And, over the past decade, they have lovingly converted old bothies and designed purpose-built properties into the loveliest of five-star accommodation.

Keeping with the privacy theme, you don’t check in here so my other half and I head straight for The Honeymooners hideaway and immediately feel like we’ve struck gold. The accommodation is open plan with floor to ceiling windows onto a substantial decked area (home to a hammock, barbecue area and the much-anticipated hot tub) offering sweeping views across the barley fields.

The attention to detail is second to none.

The dining table is set a deux, the kitchen has everything plus a bar with all the right glassware - even a cocktail shaker so I can practise my mixology skills. I do love a good bathroom and practically squeal with excitement at the sight of the indoor sauna and free-standing bath dominating the window space. My partner in crime has the log fire roaring in record time and we immediately hunker down for the rest of the weekend. Here, in The Honeymooners’ hideaway, it’s an absolute pleasure to spend time away from it all.

ou know you’re in the countryside when the first things you spot are a selection of wellies waiting for you as you enter the house. Slackbrae on the Brucefield Estate, Alloa, less than an hour’s drive from Edinburgh, is our holiday home for the weekend.

Situated in the historic 700-year estate, this gorgeously renovated forester’s cottage surprises you with its comprehensive approach to luxury. We took a tour around the estate with the knowledgeable head forester and discovered a stunning forest walk, through sky high pines with sunlight glinting onto the forest floor.

Happily, the plan is to reinstate much of the original Scots pine forests in the estate meaning more beautiful walks.

We visited Slackbrae with our son and dog Coco, and I’m not sure who loved it more. It was a joyful weekend of reconnecting as a family as well

as with nature. Indeed, watching Coco enjoy it so much was a handy reminder for us too- because whilst it’s fine to potter politely around a park for an hour, the real joy is in running free and getting lost in the woods.

It’s not often affected by dangerous waves or currents as it’s quite sheltered. Sometimes you can see porpoises and even a whale in the Forth. My main warning is to look out for seagulls trying to steal your chips.”

A swim across the loch, to the buoy and back, is about 520 metres and a swim up the water and round the islands – one of which used to host a chapel dedicated to St Columba – is two kilometres. “From the parking area near the head of Loch Slapin, follow the nearest stream uphill for about 10 to 15 minutes until you reach a series of three magnificent, pale green rock pools that look like marble. The first, which is the biggest and has a small waterfall, is a good place to get changed.

Then, instead of getting in, carry along the stream until you reach a plunge pool and enter there. Wade up the stream to a gorge and keep going through the channel in the rock to reach another waterfall, which looks like something from the Goonies. It’s possible to climb up behind the waterfall.

Once you’ve visited the gorge you can ‘do’ the next two plunge pools on the way back.”

Is your lifestyle affecting your fertility?

W

e all know that smoking and drinking can negatively impact our efforts to get pregnant but that’s not all. Here are 5 more factors you should be taking into account according to TFP Fertility Group and the Edinburgh Fertility Satellite Clinic…

1. BMI A higher BMI can impact

hormonal imbalances, pregnancy risks and the amount of drugs needed for fertility treatments, in females, and sperm numbers in males. But a very low BMI can be a problem too.

To qualify as a private fertility patient, your BMI should be no more than 35 and to be accepted as an NHS funded fertility patient, it has to be no more than 30.

2. DIET Eating healthy foods,

including fruits and vegetables, with antioxidant properties, is likely to be beneficial for protecting against oxidative stress, something which can be harmful to both eggs and sperm. Be mindful when consuming junk food, it should ideally be avoided. And try to switch from trans fats (e.g. margarine and hydrogenated vegetable oils) to unsaturated fats (e.g. oily fish and nuts).

3. EXERCISE

Although irrelevant for most people, regular and intense exercise regimes can impact male and female fertility.

Regular, moderate exercise is however proven to aid various body functions, including reproduction.

When exercising, do be mindful of taking any supplementary drugs, substances, tight underwear and your exposure to excessive heat sources (e.g. hot baths or saunas).

4. MEDICATION

Whether it’s a one-off prescription or over-thecounter medication which you take regularly, please consult the pharmacist, information leaflets and labels to establish the impact of your medication on your fertility. When you’re trying to have a baby, there are some everyday medications that are not advised.

5. MENTAL HEALTH

Fertility is an emotional rollercoaster. The stress, strains and anxiety that come with trying to conceive can’t always be avoided and you should always prioritise your overall health and wellbeing. Establishing a strong support network is useful for discussing thoughts and feelings and integrating counselling into your fertility journey can help individuals and couples by allowing them the opportunity to confidentially explore any feelings and distress they are experiencing.

Remember, it’s all relative…

Yes, lifestyle factors can impact both an individual and a couple’s chances of conceiving but it is all relative and, in some cases, it may be less or more than you think. Fertility treatment is not a one-size-fits-all approach.

There are choices that any individual can make, to aid a healthy lifestyle and indirectly promote male and female fertility.

The unexpected Home THE OWNERS OF THIS REMOTE HIGHLAND COTTAGE NEVER INTENDED TO LIVE THERE…UNTIL THEY SAW ITS UNBELIEVABLE TRANSFORMATION

B

eginning life as a crofter’s cottage, this small, isolated house in the Cairngorms had thick stone walls and tiny windows, making it feel disconnected from the dramatic landscape which surrounds it. But when owners Ian Jone and Patricia Johnston discovered the property, there was something about it which spoke to them: “When we first saw Strone of Glenbanchor, we joked that if it came up for sale we would be keen to buy it,” they said. “When it did, we jumped at the chance. We originally undertook the project to be a holiday home but loved the finished house so much we moved in permanently.”

To transform the original building, the couple enlisted the services of architects Loader Monteith, giving them one powerful line of aspiration for the project; the house needed to be a warm, comfortable, lightfilled family space that allowed the outdoors to be in harmony with the indoors. “Loader Monteith was recommended to us by our builder, and from the outset it was clear they placed our vision and our brief at the forefront of the project,” said the owners. “We liked Matt [Loader] and Iain [Monteith]’s reaction to the house and its potential.”

The challenge ahead was no mean feat. It was clear more space was needed to accommodate family and guests but local planning laws meant new building interventions could be no more than the size of the original footprint. To overcome this hurdle, the house was uniquely designed as two wings – one, an extension of the main house and the other, an entirely new structure.

First, the stone cottage was extended outwards and upwards. A black timber-clad living area was added to the rear of the property with full height glazed doors to frame

the panoramic mountain views. An island kitchen is located at the centre of the home, bookmarked by the semi-open plan living room and a small snug. Atop the old cottage, a dormer extension was built offering views to the landscape, leading to two bedrooms, a bathroom and a mezzanine office.

Next, a new ‘retreat’ wing was built in the shadow of the existing cottage, set behind and slightly offset from the main house to create long views out to the Cairngorms from the main bedroom. Also clad in black timber, this new wing is connected to the cottage by a glazed spine, and includes an entrance hall, utility room, store, bedroom, office and bathroom. Outside, a patio and concrete tiled paths border the house, giving the clients space to enjoy the outdoors in warmer months.

“Strone of Glenbanchor is a special house and location that speaks to the magic of the Scottish landscape,” says architect Matt Loader. “We worked hard to ensure the house would sit in harmony with its surroundings, both blending in with and enhancing them.

most of the views, so we positioned windows and doors carefully to open the house to the mountains.”

Choosing local, sustainable materials was also a priority. “To bed the house into its setting, we looked for local material suppliers who worked with natural fabrics in a sustainable way,” says Matt. “Slate, timber and stone anchor the house, while inside lighter, softer materials and colours allow the views to take centre stage.”

“The quality of the architectural design and building work is our favourite thing about Strone;’ say Ian and Patricia. “This house is very much admired and we are very proud to call it home. We love to sit in the garden and admire the house, as it is so beautiful and in keeping with the setting. We also love the drive up Strone Road where the house is the first thing you see.”

“Our favourite place inside is probably the kitchen/dining room area, and this leads on to an open sitting room. The double-sided wood fired stove makes it very cosy in winter. Pulling up a chair and gazing out the window, no matter what time of year, is magical.”

How to... increase your home’s kerb appeal

ANDREW MCCOLL OF EDEL SHARES HIS EXPERT TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION

F

irst impressions do count especially with period properties which naturally have heaps of kerb appeal. Spring is the ideal time to spruce up the exterior of your home and, if done properly, it will improve the overall appearance of your place and increase the value of your property. Here is our guide to getting it right.

THE FRONT DOOR

I need to say it; original is always best so, before ordering a new door, first of all consider if yours can be refurbished, restored or repaired. Always check the condition of paintwork but be aware that it might need a little more preparation than a lick of paint. Is there rotten timber, are the joints open, does the door sag and catch, have the mouldings lost their definition? All these items can be remedied; the timbers can be replaced in section and the door rehung without the need to plane the bottom of the door. Sometimes, well-intended past repairs detract from a door’s appearance and lovely detail is lost to the plethora of filler, caulk and layers of paint. Underneath it all there is very often a beautiful original door waiting to be rediscovered. Lastly, and for the final flourish, remove and replace any broken ironmongery and make sure to get the Brasso out so that it is clean and gleaming.

THE WINDOWS

It is also important to keep windows looking immaculate and to ensure they are in working order. Again, resist the urge to replace original windows with new but check that the sashes are not too loose in the frames, or they will let in draughts. The condition of timbers should be checked; a skilled joiner can cut out and splice areas of the timber, most issues are fixable and for much less than you would pay to replace. It is also more sustainable and better in the long term.

ESPECIALLY WITH PERIOD PROPERTIES WHICH NATURALLY HAVE HEAPS OF KERB APPEAL” Also worth considering is the sand mastic, it performs the important job of creating a weatherproof seal between the window frame and the masonry. If the mastic has split or is missing it is a simple item to replace. Do take care not to paint over it when redecorating the windows though. A general rule of thumb is to limit redecoration to exterior timber and ironwork, avoiding painting onto glass or stone. Do not apply too much paint to the windows, sometimes windows stick simply due to a build up of layers of paint applied over the years. Brilliant and trade white never look as good on the architectural detailing of a period home as the softer off-whites available from the heritage colour ranges we are all familiar with.

AND… CHECK IT’S OK

Remember, if your property is listed or you live in a conservation area you may require Listed Building Consent or planning permission before you carry out works or make changes. For guidance speak to a suitably accredited architect, conservation focussed trade body or organisations like the Listed Property Owners Club or Historic Environment Scotland who publish guides.

FEATURING TEXTILE DESIGNER WENDY MORRISON What’s your signature interiors style? Some people would say it’s maximalist, I’d call it eclectic with soul. I love colour, pattern and texture and have a lot of fun playing with these.

Which colour palette do you love the most? Pink and gold and green. I love most colours with a highlight of gold but pink and green have been constants for as long as a remember. I am currently finding green and lilac rather delicious too.

Favourite room at home? I do love my snug, I think I have created my perfect WFH office here, it catches the morning light with a large easterly facing window over the garden and I have decorated it with our eternal toile wallpaper with painted lilac ceiling. It has a very gentle and calm feeling with lots of plants.

What is your one essential for modern living?I think I would have to say a rug, followed closely by a comfortable sofa, both these pieces can create a powerful impact through colour, pattern, and texture. When creating a space, I always consider what draws my eye first on entering the space, and this has to make me smile. It could of course be a statement piece of artwork too.

Which new addition to your own collection are you most excited about? Our new Joie de Vivre wall panels (pictured top left) are a great way to spark joy in your home, these are complimented beautifully with our new Nurture and Lovebirds hand tufted rugs too, it is a tough call (pictured bottom left).

What’s the best housewarming gift you could get someone? A plant is always a good idea, it is both useful and beautiful, as is a cushion if you can find the perfect one.

If your house was on fire, what is the one item you would save? My hand knotted eternal toile rug. Knowing the time, skills and energy that goes into such a piece, I really could not let her burn. And being hand knotted in wool and silk I can easily get her over my shoulder at 25kilos.

What is the best dressed hotel you’ve visited? Hotel les Deux Gares in Paris (pictured above right) is a beautiful and affordable place to stay. I thoroughly enjoyed observing how thoughtful, beautiful and functional design had been incorporated throughout.

Which local stores are in your secret address book?

My favourite little curiosity shop in Edinburgh is Aquarius Vintage. Owner Christine is an experienced treasure hunter stocking everything from jewels, and vintage glassware to chandeliers.

Which Instagram accounts do you give the most likes?

I love to indulge in @alidad_ltd, @archdigest, @be.esign and @tat.london. I also love @nathalie_lete for incredible creativity.

They have a café on the Canongate and used to roast and blend their coffee in The Biscuit Factory along the hall from our blending studio, so I’ve grown a deep love for their coffee this past year.

Brunch: Hamilton’s in Stockbridge has been my lazy brunch with friends hangout for years now.

Pizza: Civerinos. The Portobello site is amazing for grabbing a slice.

Sunday roast: One Canon.

They’re becoming famous for their roasts but I knew them when they were underground!

Cocktails: Nauticus.

There’s an amazing drinks scene in Edinburgh now, and this was tough to choose; but Nauticus is our local and serves some mean Woven cocktails.

Fine dining: The Little Chartroom. My wife and I were lucky enough to get a table last year for Roberta’s full Great British Menu dinner. It was just amazing.

Live music: Leith Theatre.

Film: The Filmhouse has always been a really special place to me, showing classic and independent cinema.

Art: Arts 13 is a new art collective and hub in Leith,

focused on showcasing local talent. I love it there.

Fashion: It depends what the occasion is - for casual, you can’t beat Kestin and for smart/formal occasions, Stewart Christie.

Furniture: Inverleith Salesroom has a cool selection of second hand and vintage. Or Catalog for something more

contemporary. Dick’s also has a really beautifully curated selection of homeware, accessories, and ceramics that I always yearn for on my walk up the hill from Stockbridge.

Fragrance: Jorum Studio.

I love what they are doing with their bespoke and small batch releases. I have a total business crush on them too.

Grooming: Shed at Custom Lane. Kipps is our go-to guy for all things hair.

You can even try a little Woven while he does your sideburns.

Exercise: Cycling.

Edinburgh’s a great city for exploring on bike.

Walk: Kask Whisky Tours in Leith. There’s so much whisky history in the area and the walking tour enlights and delights with facts and titbits.
