W
ith some areas of art and entertainment diving back into business and others taking it more slowly, the hope that things might be getting back towards normal (or at least a new normal) is tempered by the time it takes to get big shows together. While promoters and producers are doubtless scrambling about to get things organised quickly, here’s the best of what’s been announced so far.
NEW YEAR’S CELEBRATIONS Usually Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party tickets are almost sold out by now and a host of big international names have been announced for events across the city, but things are going more slowly this year. The welcome news that the street party is going ahead finally came at the end of October but things will look a little different this year. Renamed ‘Party at the Bells’, the street party will run from 10pm to 1am with a reduced capacity of 30,000 people permitted to enjoy the countdown celebrations on Princes Street. 3,500 ticketholders will be able to watch electronic music duo Basement Jaxx and Scottish DJ Arielle Free live on the Ross bandstand in the gardens under the castle while their performances are streamed to the rest of the crowd on huge screens. Then as the clock strikes midnight, the iconic fireworks display will light up the skies, cementing Scotland, once again, as the home of Hogmanay. Ahead of the big event, families can also look forward to the return of The Torchlight Procession (30 December). Participants will collect their torches from three locations around the city: Waverley Bridge, West Parliament Square or Bristo Square and will then start the Procession on the Royal Mile between Photography © Roberto Ricciuti

North Bridge and St Mary’s Street. The family friendly event will be slightly different to previous years, with the procession spread out between 4pm and 9pm, allowing locals and visitors alike to blaze through the Scottish capital in a fun and safe environment. Meanwhile, down at Greyfriars Kirk, Scottish singer-songwriter Dougie Maclean will be performing as part of Scottish Music Programme, a special three-night folk event (29 – 31 December). Opening the mini festival is one of Scotland’s most skilled and imaginative contemporary folk acts, Breabach (29 December) while on Hogmanay itself, the beloved three x BRIT Award winner, Eddi Reader will take to the stage.

Despite the debates over vaccine passports, clubs are also making big plans for new year, with Ayr’s breakthrough DJ and producer Ewan McVicar announced for FLY NYE at Cabaret Voltaire (31 December) and a full-venue Nightvision party, with quests still to be announced, at the Liquid Room & Warehouse (31 December). The Liquid Room is also hosting a New Year’s Day session from seminal Edinburgh queer club Taste (01 January) and a First Edition Boxing Day warehouse bash with the mighty Helena Hauff (26 December), while the Jackhammer 20th birthday party is at the Caves over the holiday period (29 December) and Pulse has two parties planned, one at La Belle Angele with Glasgow’s Slam (26 December) and a New Year’s Day event at a venue tbc.

Spirit doesn’t come much more Christmassy than the annual Phil Cunningham’s Christmas Songbook (20 and 21 December), stopping at the Queen’s Hall on a seasonal tour of the country, with Scottish folk stars including Eddi Reader, Karen Matheson, John McCusker and Kris Drever in attendance. Just the thing to get warmed up for the return of Celtic Connections (20 January to 06 February) to Glasgow in the depths of winter. Back in Edinburgh, meanwhile, there are a bunch of must-see shows coming up in the New Year, from Scottish stalwarts Belle & Sebastian (Usher Hall, 01 February), CHVRCHES (O2 Academy Edinburgh, 14 March) and Eigg-based pop noodler Pictish Trail (Summerhall, 07 April) plus stand-out touring names like recent Ivor Novello winners Goldfrapp (Usher Hall, 07 April), Mancunian DIY genius Julie Campbell aka LoneLady (Mash House, 02 February) and young punks Nova Twins (Mash House, 12 February).

THEATRE
Much like the music industry, large-scale theatre is getting back in business quickly with plenty of big touring shows, a number of which were planned before the pandemic. At the Playhouse, for example, Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf’s rock musical Bat Out of Hell is playing (08 to 19 February), as is the soulful return to the soul sound of the 1960s Dreamgirls (05 to 16 April). There are other big musical names coming to the Festival Theatre too, including the all-singing story of Henry VIII’s wives in Six (15 to 26 March) and the big West End hit Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (29 March to 02 April), while the King’s Theatre hosts the National Theatre of Scotland’s brand new musical version of the Peter Mullan film Orphans (12 to 16 April), written by Douglas Maxwell and directed by Cora Bissett. At the Royal Lyceum, the spring will bring the premiere of Zinnie Harris’s new play The Scent of Roses (25 February to 19 March) and Hamilton star Giles Terera’s debut play The Meaning of Zong (13 to 23 April), about an antislavery campaign in the 18th century.

The National Galleries of Scotland’s current programme continues into 2022, which means all the family still have time to experience old-school cinema thrills at Ray Harryhausen: Titan of Cinema at Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Modern Two) (until 20 February). Elsewhere, Joan Eardley and Catterline at Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Modern One) celebrates the great Scottish painter of the 20th century, Thomas Joshua Cooper: The World’s Edge at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery (until 23 January) presents photographs of the fringes of the Atlantic Ocean, and New Arrivals: From Salvador Dali to Jenny Saville at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Modern One) shows off some recent acquisitions from huge names including Hirst and Picasso. At the Fruitmarket Gallery on Market Street, two exhibitions take us through to spring. In the main gallery space, Howardena Pindell’s A New Language (until 02 May) celebrates the six-decade career of an artist whose work has responded to racism

and white supremacy through paintings, works on paper and video, while in the new warehouse space, up-and-coming artist Jyll Bradley’s Pardes (until 18 April) is a sculptural exhibit designed for this former fruit and veg storage space.

hen I heard Tommy Hilfiger was opening in St James Quarter, I was… well, to be honest, I was indifferent. As far as my limited fashion knowledge was concerned, I thought the preppy American brand was all about that wealthy student look I couldn’t even pull off in my Edinburgh university days. While there’s obviously a place for hoodies and puffers in everyone’s winter wardrobes, my chilly season style tends more towards the smarter end of casual – think cosy knits, wool coats and chunky boots. Does CoolSculpting really work? We get the lowdown from a CoolSculpting client at Cavendish Clinic

e’ve all dreamt of losing our love handles forever. And we’ve all heard about a myriad different treatments available on the market. So, where to start and what to choose? Celia Brown, a 32-year-old client at Cavendish Clinic London, attended the clinic earlier this year to finally tackle her body confidence issues head on. Here she shares her CoolSculpting experience with us… Why did you decide to try CoolSculpting? I have always felt insecure about my lower abdomen and would try to hide it. I had thought about surgical treatments but chose to try CoolSculpting as it’s noninvasive and has minimal risks. It also, importantly, has FDA clearance ensuring safety and efficacy. Basically, CoolSculpting gently freezes the targeted fat cells without damaging any surrounding tissue. Your body then
gets rid of them safely and naturally through your lymphatic system and they are gone for good. The Cavendish Clinic has a high level of expertise in the procedure and they made me feel at ease. What exactly does the treatment involve? I had one treatment which involved four applicators being applied with a gentle vacuum that grabs hold of the fat pockets. When each applicator finished, my practitioner massaged the tissue vigorously for a few minutes to help warm the skin up again. The whole process was over in about three hours. Does it hurt? The cold is like a tingling sensation on your skin but it goes numb pretty quickly which makes it more bearable. Quick chocolate and hazelnut mousse This mousse was a happy accident. I aimed to make a creamy chocolate filling or frosting for a cupcake, but after tasting this mix, I realised it was good enough to eat on its own, so I gave it its own recipe. Three minutes would be a high estimation for how long this pudding takes to make; I reckon you could drill it down to under two. But it doesn’t matter that it takes such little time and little effort; I would happily serve it at any casual family meal or, equally, a ‘get the fancy china out’ dinner party. When freshly made, it has a light, airy and soft texture; if you leave it in the fridge for a few hours, it firms up and becomes a more thick and unctuous mousse. So, make it ahead, or make it last minute without the concern of neglecting any guests for long while you prepare their delicious pudding. This recipe makes enough for 4. • 250ml double cream • 25g icing sugar • 250g chocolate hazelnut spread • 30g roasted hazelnuts, for decoration 1. Whip the cream with the icing sugar to medium-firm peaks. 2. Add in the chocolate hazelnut spread and whisk through until just combined. 3. Spoon or pipe into your serving dishes and chill in the fridge. 4. Top the mousse with chopped roasted hazelnuts and serve!

Chocolate Caramel Tart
I
do consider balance in most of my recipes. Combining sweetness with something bitter or creaminess with something sharp is typically a sensible thing to do when creating a recipe. But balance has not been considered here. I thought I’d go all-in for this bake! It does what it says on the tin; this is a chocolate pastry case filled with caramel and chocolate ganache, nothing fancy about it, just pure indulgence. Each bite is incredibly rich and wonderfully satisfying. I will warn you, though, it’s best to take a very thin slice and finish wanting more. It’s quite easy to scupper yourself on this one. • 1 quantity chocolate sweet shortcrust pastry For the chocolate filling: • 280g double cream • 200g dark chocolate • 20g butter Flaky sea salt For the salted caramel sauce: • 200g sugar • 3 tablespoons water • 100g double cream • 100g butter, cubed • Flaky sea salt (optional)

Preheat the oven to 180°C fan/190°C conventional/gas mark 5. 1. Blind bake a 20–23cm chocolate shortcrust pastry case (see recipe at ionmagazine.co.uk/recipes). Leave to cool. 2. For the salted caramel sauce, make a wet caramel with the sugar and water, taking it to a deep amber. 3. Leave the mixture on the heat and gradually stir in the cream. Be careful: the mixture may spit as it bubbles up. 4. Remove from the heat, leave to cool for a couple of minutes then add in the butter, stirring until combined. Once the mixture is smooth, stir through the salt if desired.
5. Leave this to cool for about 15 minutes at room temperature, then pour about three quarters of it into the tart case. Leave to chill in the fridge. 6. For the chocolate filling, heat the double cream in a pan until just bubbling. Add in the chocolate and gently stir until you achieve a smooth texture. Add in the butter and stir to combine. Pour this mixture over the caramel and leave it to set in the fridge for at least 2 hours. 7. Sprinkle some flaky sea salt over the tart and slice into thin slices with a warm knife while the tart is fridge cold. Leave to reach room temperature before serving so the filling is soft and silky.

PETITS FOUR…
Millionaire Shortbread Domes Chocolate, caramel and shortbread, that’s a winning combo! These little domes are a fancy way to serve the classic traybake that’s everyone’s favourite. The domes are very small and dainty, so they can be a little fiddly to put together. However, if any turn out more broken or messier than you would like, you can enjoy a chef’s perk and hide the evidence with a tasty post-baking snack! For the shortbread: • 50g unsalted butter, softened • 30g caster sugar • 1 large egg yolk • ½ teaspoon salt • 90g plain flour For the filling: • 250g dark chocolate • 1 quantity salted caramel sauce (made to recipe on previous page) or 1 tin of caramel
Preheat the oven to 150°C fan/160°C conventional/ gas mark 3. Line a baking tray with baking paper. You will need a small hemisphere or cake pop mould. MAKE THE SHORTBREAD 1. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy (this will take 3 to 5 minutes). 2. Stir through the remaining ingredients until it forms a stiff dough. Gently work together into a ball using your hands. 3. Roll out the dough between two sheets of baking paper until about ¼ cm thick. Place this in the fridge to chill for at least 20 minutes. 4. Find a cutter that is just smaller than the opening to your hemisphere or cake pop mould. Cut discs of the shortbread using this cutter, transfer to your baking tray and bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly golden around the edges.
FILL AND ASSEMBLE 1. Melt 150g of the chocolate, remove from the heat, then stir through a further 50g until all melted. Pour a teaspoon of chocolate into each mould and use the back of a teaspoon to spread it around the inside of the mould, completely covering it. Leave this to set at room temperature. 2. Spoon or pipe the cooled caramel into the set chocolate domes filling them about five sixths full. Place a shortbread round into each dome. Melt the remaining 50g of chocolate and fill a piping bag with it. Cut a very fine hole from the piping bag and fill any gaps between the shortbread and moulds or caramel with chocolate. Leave this to chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. 3. Once chilled, pop out from the moulds and dig in!

A FAVOURITE HAUNT REVISITED
Jo Morris dines at Monteiths on the Royal Mile and remembers why she loved it in the first place
W
hen Monteiths Kitchen and Cocktail Bar opened on the Royal Mile in the noughties, it brought a different vibe to the city’s most famous tourist street. It was ‘doing Scotland’ differently, bringing local produce and masterful mixology, and attracting the locals who had previously written off the area as a place for drinks and dinner. And, in case it’s not still on your radar, let me tell you it should be. Monteiths is rather lovely. Snuck down a close, a twinkly light canopy beckons you in. Downstairs, you’re welcomed into a modern yet intimate and cosy space, all comfy leather seating, dark and luxurious paint colours and thoughtful mood lighting. Excited to be back in its fold and keen to find out if it still delivered in the food stakes, we ordered cocktails and bar bites. I can honestly say, biting into the perfect haggis bonbons and fried goats’ cheese, a deep sense of happiness came over me. I remembered the joy of dining out and took a long, contented sip of my Orchard Bramble cocktail (new favourite drink: Gin, blackcurrant liqueur, apple and elderflower.) Mains were simply brilliant. I’m usually a straight up steak girl but the halibut with leeks, peas and bacon, £28, jumped out at me. It came with a side of mash and was probably the best I’ve ever eaten- perfectly cooked, moist and meaty yet light and exquisitely seasoned. My partner had the venison loin, £28, again with a potato side which was also superb. The wine list was decent and

We were about to call it a night until we saw a neighbouring table’s treacle tart. Food FOMO does exist which is why, five minutes later, we were sharing our own portion of the perfectly sweet and moreish dessert. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Great service, friendly, professional, and very efficient staff, excellent food, and a buzzy atmosphere. Monteiths felt like a familiar hug from an old friend. I’ve already recommended it to two people, both of whom said they haven’t been for ages. I suspect this is going to change. Monteiths is well worth rediscovering.

W
hen Brenda Carey first laid eyes on the property she would go on to buy, she couldn’t have imagined how magnificent it could look with a lick of paint. “I was living in a one bedroom just down the road in Polwarth and was looking for more space and a new start,” remembers Carey, a senior computer games designer at Rockstar. “My first impression was it was a really beautiful Victorian tenement, with all the original wood features and amazing light.” “I wanted a place I could entertain people, she continues, “I love to cook and hosting is important. This flat provided the space for that.” What it didn’t come with was personality but Carey knew exactly who to call to inject some of that – Edinburgh-based interior designer Sam Buckley, now known to his legions of Instagram followers as Mr Buckley. “Sam is a friend of a friend I met years ago. He hosted some great after parties at his place in the West End. When I first saw it, I fell in love with his style right away and knew if I could, I’d hire him.” Leeds-born Buckley had originally moved to Edinburgh to do his degree in Architectural Technology and later spent several years in Milan studying for a masters in Interior Design before returning to his home in the city. His colourful abode was soon famed not only among friends, but, thanks to social media, far beyond. With a background in architectural technology, Buckley knows how to work with the bones of a space. And while his approach to colour is certainly singular, it is usually always led by the client. In Carey however, he was blessed with someone who trusted his vision entirely. “Initially I gave more input on the design but then I realised I didn’t know what I was talking about,” laughs Carey.

“I hired Sam to make my home great, so I simply explained the parts of his place I liked to give him a bit of a steer and then I let him do what he wanted. He sourced everything from the furniture to the art on the walls - I loved his eye for artwork and knew he’d find really great artists which would fit.” “Brenda has a love of pop art and graphic statements so we utilised that for the scheme,” says Buckley. “The design stems from a concept of supergraphics, which is the application of oversized graphic elements in architecture and interior design.” After plotting the designs on screen in 3D renderings, Buckley went back to basics, hand drawing the graphics onto the walls using a pencil, string and a compass before the decorators filled in the colours. “I had selected a striped velvet from French textile house Lelièvre which Brenda fell in love with so that became the start of the colour palette,” explains Buckley. “I then added in a few more colours to the room to add balance to the palette”. The result borders on psychedelic with over-sized geometric patterns emblazoned on the walls in technicolour, enhanced with the addition of brightly coloured furnishings, eye-catching modern artworks and a huge bespoke rug made with Italian rug company cc-tapis, friends of Buckley’s from Milan who he has a long-standing partnership with.

Other bespoke pieces include colourful push plates on the doors to replace traditional brass metalwork and a modern ceiling rose, created in collaboration with Chalk Plaster Design, which is a work of art in its own right. “Since I lost my original ceiling rose in an accident, it was a struggle to find a new highly detailed Victorian equivalent,” says Carey, “so I asked Sam to go modern if he could. He knew exactly who to work with and what to do.” Having spent most of the previous year working in New York, Carey hadn’t been around to see the space take shape but when she finally came home, she was truly wow-ed. “I just loved it,” she gushes. “It felt so comfortable and like a place I wanted to spend time in and somewhere I could have people over to enjoy too. I don’t actually live there full-time at the moment, but when I’m there the colours really brighten my mood. They also feel great at night with the firelight and make the space really cosy in the winter. You took the reins from the original owners of Jeffreys earlier this year. Can you tell us a bit about the takeover and how it all came about? GEORGINA: It’s been a long time in the making – Jeff and Alison were approaching retirement and realised that they would need to put a succession plan in place for the business. Jo and I had both worked at Jeffreys for a couple of years by that point and felt that together we could take it forwards while retaining the DNA of the existing business. Because the takeover has been planned and come from within, it feels natural. Is your approach different to the previous owners? JO: When Jeff and Alison moved the business to our current location in Stockbridge 16 years ago, they developed a strong identity of a place where people could come and explore the showroom to find special and unique pieces. We strive to do the same, we want people to come into our showroom and find things they fall in love with – real conversation starters. How would you describe your own signature interiors style? GEORGINA: I like a classic, elegant design style with quality fabrics and beautiful craftsmanship. Although honestly, my Pinterest is an absolute kaleidoscope of styles and colours – I’d need about three houses to be able to fit in everything I love. JO: I’m a maximalist through and through, I love classic design, but mixing colour, pattern and texture is so appealing to me. I often accidentally find myself dressing like the schemes I’m working on. They really get under the skin.

What is your favourite colour palette? GEORGINA: I love oranges – not an Irn-Bru orange (although that has its place!), but more glowy, autumnal burnt oranges.
JO: A reflective, sparkly rainbow – give me all the colour! What has been your most exciting Edinburgh project so far? JO: We’ve had lots of exciting projects here in Edinburgh. Recently we completed two townhouses on Ann Street – the bones of the houses were similar but inside they are polar opposites. Each is beautiful in its own right and perfectly suited for the owner, we feel like they really encapsulate our motto of “your taste; our talent” where we work to elevate our clients’ wishes. What is the best dressed hotel or Airbnb you’ve visited? GEORGINA: I love the Fife Arms in Braemar. The attention to detail is phenomenal and they’ve been so authentic and inclusive of the community in their designs. There are sketched portraits throughout depicting people who live in the surrounding areas. It’s a really lovely place.

What is your favourite room in your own home? GEORGINA: We’re both in rented flats so nothing is exactly as we would choose, but they are very much ‘home’. My favourite space is our living room which is bright, airy and filled with plants. I set up my desk there and it’s a great space to work, and relax, in. JO: I’ve recently moved into a new flat and it feels really homely already. The living room opens out into a small private garden and my puppy, Inca, just loves it – it’s a whole new world for him! What is your one essential for stylish, comfortable modern living? JO: Invest in a great sofa. I have one from Charlotte James, made here in Edinburgh and it is well made and SO comfortable. If you get the best you can afford, they’ll hold their shape, be more comfortable and serve you better in the long term than a quick ‘interim’ purchase. Is there an iconic piece of furniture which you would love to own? GEORGINA: I would love to have some De Gournay or Fromental wall coverings in my house – they’re absolute works of art and elevate any space. What would you say is the best housewarming gift you can get someone? JO: There’s something about crisp, white bedding. It works in every room and during a busy and stressful moving period it’s great to sink into fresh, clean sheets. If your house was on fire, what is the one item you’d save? GEORGINA: It would definitely be the artwork and sentimental items picked up on our travels. A bonkers cat poster from the Kattenkabinet (Cat Museum) in Amsterdam is jumping to mind… it’s ridiculous and I love it! JO: Definitely my antique carved sofa, although I might have some trouble getting it out!
How can people revamp their homes for the new season without spending a fortune? GEORGINA: Keep it simple by changing up cushions and adding cosy layers with textured throws. Also adding mood lighting will make a hugely positive change to your space. Grooming: The Nail Yard in Morningside do a great quick gel mani and the Margaret Dabbs pedicure is pure luxury. Brunch: Toast down at the shore is a personal favourite. The food is nutritious and delicious, and the waterside setting is very pretty.

Walk: I’m obsessed with being by the sea, so I love Sundays down at Portobello Beach. Regardless of the weather, I always feel grounded and refreshed after spending an hour or two walking along the sea front. Live music: The Jazz Bar is my haunt. You’ll find me there on the first Sunday evening of every month for my ‘Sunday Serenade’. I also love the Queens Hall for bigger concerts - the acoustics of the space are so beautiful. Georgia Cécile will be celebrating the release of her debut album ‘Only The Lover Sings’ with a concert at Edinburgh Queen’s Hall on 26 November.
