IN SHORT

EYE ON THE CITY Inspiration for May

Russell John Watson, 48, opera singer

What brings you to Edinburgh? I’m performing at the Queens Hall on Monday 11 May. It’ll be an intimate evening with a few musicians and a local choir. What attracted you to classical music? I love music and used to sing everything from Elvis to Phantom of the Opera. One day someone suggested I try Nessun Dorma and the rest is history. What’s the highlight of your career? Singing for the late Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. What’s your favourite piece of classical music? Intermezzo, it reminds me of my gran who also loved it. My prized possessions are… my family, friends, fiancé and children. They are my inspiration. For tickets to Up Close & Personal visit www.thequeenshall. net. Read the full interview at www.ionmagazine.co.uk.

POLLOCK YOURSELF Turn your pristine white running gear into a work of modern art with Color Me Rad on 09 May at the Royal Highland Centre. If you normally find running a bit drab then this 5k is for you; the course is peppered with cornstarch colour explosives and culminates in a battle royale finale, think a running version of the Indian colour festival in Wayfarers. www.colormerad.co.uk.

ATTIC SALE For antiques, china, toys or collectables make sure you have the Stately Homes Attic Sale in your diary. Taking place at Dalkeith Palace, Dalkeith Country Park, on Sunday 17 May, 10.30am – 3pm, there’ll be about 80 stall holders rocking up with their horse boxes full of treasures that have been squirrelled away in their attics for generations. www.statelyatticsale.co.uk.

PLACE YOUR BETS Don your finest and see some quality flat racing at The Edinburgh Cup. Making its way back to Musselburgh Racecourse on Saturday 06 June, there’ll be bars, artisan food outlets and an after-party featuring DJ Scott Mills. For standard tickets or access to the exclusive Edinburgh Cup Club marquee, Tel: 0131 665 2859 or visit www.musselburgh-racecourse.co.uk.

YOUNG FATHERS words ∙ David Pollock

A

few days prior to time of writing, a huge billboard on Leith Walk in the heart of Young Fathers’ home city Edinburgh displayed the simple, strikingly contentious advert for their new album. In dark blue against a blood red background it declared ‘White Men Are Black Men Too’ (the title of the record), a statement which seems designed to confuse and provoke in equal measure. What can it all mean? Refreshing but rare in contemporary music, Young Fathers are unafraid to confound and to challenge. Early evidence of this came last year, having won the 2014 Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award for their extended EP Tape Two and followed it up with the bookie-confounding Mercury Prize win for the debut album Dead which made their name. Dressed sharply and seemingly resilient to offering a smile for the latter event, the trio (Alloysius ‘Ally’ Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and Graham ‘G’ Hastings) refused to play the

red carpet attention-grabbing game for the next morning’s papers, their answers as monosyllabic as their demeanour was disinterested. To entertainment journos keen to fill the column inches or the online pages, of course, this seemed like a truculent pose which was too clever-clever to take seriously. To anyone watching who liked the thought that musicians could still mess with the format of their public appearance, however, it was an indication that these guys could be a cut above. Their next steps backed that idea up; rather than milk the album for which they’d become famous for months on end, and then retire off to think about their next move at leisure, they packed up their draughty Leith basement studio, decamped to Berlin and had the next album recorded and ready to go within six months. Much like Dead, it’s a record which doesn’t try hard to fit into any pre-designed

REFRESHING BUT RARE IN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC, YOUNG FATHERS ARE UNAFRAID TO CONFOUND AND TO CHALLENGE

genre, marrying eclectic samples and grooves with oblique, powerfully-delivered lyrics which mix together the personal and the political with thoughts of race and class in a manner which doesn’t beat the listener over the head. From the days when they met at underage rap night Lick Shot at Edinburgh’s old Bongo Club on New Street, now demolished, to their early life as rap-pop group 3-Style, Young Fathers have taken the long way round to recognition, and they’re not falling into line now they’ve caught people’s ears. That they’re supporting Paul Weller on his arena tour later this year says much about where they want to be, not as an underground concern, but as a futurist pop group who might lead new audiences in unexpected directions. Young Fathers play the Art School, Glasgow, Wednesday 20 May; Knockengorroch World Ceilidh Festival, Saturday 23 May; Neu! Reekie! at Central Hall, Edinburgh, Tuesday 09 June.

Hailing from Torphichen in West Lothian, freelance make-up artist Mairi works alongside fashion designers, beauty brands and local businesses including Location Scotland and Greenrooms Films. A keen snowboarder and surfer too, here she gives the lowdown on the city she now calls home. What gives Edinburgh its edge? The diverse range of people that live here. Is there anything that would place Edinburgh more firmly on the map? An improved music scene. It needs to have big music venues like Glasgow so we can have more live events. Your preferred areas in Edinburgh? Leith because of its nice restaurants and bars, Portobello for bike rides and to be by the sea and Stockbridge for the small independents and a cosy drink by the fire at The Last Word.

Bryce Mckenzie Upholstered Furniture Collection 35a DUNDAS STREET, EDINBURGH, EH3 6QQ

The city’s best kept secret? The Sheep Heid Inn, a restored village pub in Duddingston. Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? I like to go surfing at Pease Bay, Whitesands beach near Dunbar or Coldingham.

Around the city – where you’ll find me: Dining out: Fishers in Leith, Rollo, Roseleaf, Timberyard. Having my haircut: Julie McGuire at Beehive Salon. For a pamper session: One Spa, The Sheraton Hotel.

Meg Smith

photo ∙ Susie Lowe

If you’re a lady looking to enhance your curves and sculpt your arms, Meg is your girl. A personal trainer, British bikini champion and sponsored athlete, she offers nutritional advice and top training techniques to help you get the best from your workout. Here she talks training, clean eating and cheat days. Healthy eating, weights or cardio? What comes first in your opinion? Diet. You could train for hours every day but if you don’t have a balanced diet or eat the correct nutritional food, your body won’t change as it should. What’s essential for a healthy diet? It depends on the individual but it’s generally about getting the right level of protein, carb and fat intake. Fad diets or juicing just deprive your body of the energy it needs so it’s much better to focus on eating clean, natural, whole foods and fresh produce, and limit processed foods and sugar. Where’s best for al fresco training in Edinburgh? Arthur’s Seat is great. I take summer boot camps there. What might you eat on a cheat day? When I’m not prepping for any comps I love the odd cheat day at Chaophraya Thai restaurant. It keeps me sane.

TRAVEL Jimmy Martin photo ∙ Susie Lowe

Travelling to the most far-flung places in the name of research is par for the course for Jimmy Martin. He’s the owner of Jimmy Martin Travel in Stockbridge and a specialist in creating luxury bespoke holidays. Here he shares his own personal travel experiences with i-on. The destination I’ll always go back to is... Italy. I’ve been to so many places from Bari to Pisa, Florence and Rome and they never fail to impress. My photo album is full of pictures of... my kids. I’ve got four of them. My ideal trip is… abroad. It’s exciting to see different cultures and relax away from it all. I always prefer somewhere hot too so would go in the summer of the destination I’m travelling to – for example the Caribbean when it’s our winter. What sounds remind you of travelling? Waves on the beach or a Paul Oakenfold track. Your favourite childhood holiday memory? Rolling a ball down a big hill to the beach and listening to ‘70s music with my dad at a wee holiday flat in Kinghorn, Fife.

YOU AND ME

James Donald and Fiona McIntosh photo ∙ Susie Lowe

Mixing friendship and business doesn’t always work well but for weaver James Donald and textile designer Fiona McIntosh, owners of Scottish design-led craft shop Concrete Wardrobe on Broughton Street, it’s been a recipe for success. Here they share their story. Fiona on James: “James and I met over 16 years ago when he had a studio in the building opposite me. I remember we had a giggling fit while attending a fairly ‘serious’ workshop meeting. The best part about working together is that we’re on the same wavelength and both have similar aims and ambitions. Concrete Wardrobe is a happy accident that celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, we never intended to become shop keepers. “Over the years our communication has become much better which is vital in our relationship when decisions have to be made quickly. I would like to think I am a good communicator and reliable. James is very hardworking and a good, loyal friend.” James on Fiona: “I remember thinking Fiona was a right laugh and a bit of a doer in that nothing seemed out of reach. Her sense of humour and no nonsense, get on with it attitude have always been traits that I’ve admired. This may be the reason why nothing has ever felt hard about working together for the last 15 years and being able to remain friends throughout it all. “Whilst Fiona and I are very independent with our own practices I doubt I could have gone into retail alone. It’s a full time job that Fiona and I both do on a part time basis, so the balancing act is quite tricky. The biggest challenge we have ever faced is dealing with a high street bank whose actions nearly put us under a few years back. It was an incredibly stressful situation, which I know many small businesses faced at the time. We got through it because we had formulated a plan B together.”

uch like the world of fashion, trying to keep up with what’s happening in the realms of home style can be a fickle business. There are looks that are fleeting (and we’re all rather relieved that they are), and others that arrive and stick around. Hidden amongst the rails of disposable home fashion are the ‘skinny jean’ and ‘camel coat’ of the world of interiors - the pieces that remain from one season to the next. The key is investing wisely. And

more than that, in things you really love, that will bring joy and fun to your home whatever the magazines are telling you to buy next. Whether your four walls are looking decidedly tired and in need of a full overhaul or you just fancy a freshen up, take a little inspiration from the best of 2015’s interior design trends for style that will stick around long after the summer is gone.

Metals Get Warmer There is nothing warm about a stainless steel splash back or chrome light fitting. You could be forgiven for never even having considered the warmth of such an item to be of significance. However, it’s official, this season warm metallic tones are in, whether it be a splash of copper in the kitchen, a brassy light fitting or a gold tap at the sink side. And don’t be afraid to mix your metals. New rules apply meaning you no longer have to coordinate your shiny bits in the same manner

The Really Wild Show For the last couple of years, geometric prints have been everywhere and it looks like they’re staying put a little longer. But if hordes of triangles aren’t your thing, don’t for a moment allow yourself to be hemmed in as this year prints go wild. Quite literally. Think jungle-themed, botanical, zoo animals; if it lives, breathes, uses photosynthesis, you’re on the right track

and you can take this trend as far as you dare. Be it a cushion, an entire sofa or a bold papered wall, the world is your oyster. In fact, in terms of print and colour, world influences are rampant in general. John Lewis and Jeffreys Interiors are great places to start when sourcing wallpapers and fabrics. Remnant Kings and Dingwall Fabrics in Morningside and Bryce McKenzie on Dundas Street are also worth checking out for fabrics. For beautiful Scotland-based textile designers try Timorous Beasties, Iona Crawford and Orwell & Goode. The Nomads Tent has a selection of oriental rugs and kilims.

The Dark Side In terms of colour, recent years have relentlessly championed a white and grey pallet with tones such as Farrow and Ball’s Elephant’s Breath and Down Pipe gaining almost iconic status. If life has become far too Fifty Shades for your liking, this season witnesses a move towards creating greater contrast in your environment. Carefully adding very deep, moody hues to offset white and paler tones can altogether create more warmth, drama, and texture in a space. Pantone’s colour of 2015 is Marsala – a rich, earthy

red-brown, and deep greens, blues, aubergine tones, dark leathers, even black are making a major comeback. If you’re looking for inspiration look to Farrow & Ball in Stockbridge or The Paint Shed. Industrial Gets Practical The industrial look made a foray into our homes many moons ago, but no longer is a broken Singer sewing machine

in the corner of a room, or a rusty set of school lockers hopelessly acting as storage going to cut it - the need for practical living has triumphed. The influence remains, it just works a little better now. And you can wipe it down with a wet cloth without getting a splinter. Anything from salvaged kitchen chairs or an enameled light fitting, to polished concrete or reclaimed shelving fits the bill, just team it with an altogether cleaner look to keep it fresh.

Marble wallpaper, Paper Moon

Find Your Marbles Marble, in particular Carrera (the white stuff), has been increasing in popularity for some time now and its prevalence is gathering pace. Not just for your kitchen worktops (though yes, here definitely), the marble effect can be seen making forays into the spheres of fabrics and wall coverings also. If you fear a marbled wall might drive you to lose your marbles altogether, the combination of a white marble worktop with an inset copper sink has surely got timeless classic written all over it. Try Rocca Worktops or Stonecare for Scotlandbased suppliers.

ICONIC EDINBURGH George Street

words ∙ David Hicks ∙ main photo ∙ Susie Lowe

G

eorge Street has a reputation for high-class shopping, but it’s not just about big name brands. It’s the architecture that really sets the character of the street. When the New Town was first planned in 1767 George Street was titled simply ‘the principal street’, deliberately positioned on top of a ridge so as to be the most prominent part of the new development. The intention was to create terraces of elegant townhouses to attract the wealthy back to the city. However, initially planning regulations were fairly lax, and some criticised it as being monotonous. During the Victorian period George Street slowly became a place for shopping. On the ground floors of many buildings, dining rooms and libraries gave way to showrooms. In some places properties were extended at the back with long top-

lit rooms, to show off products in more spacious and opulent surroundings. Today there are still some good examples at LK Bennett, Moss and Hobbs. The street also became associated with banking which has left a legacy of some very grand architecture. The most obvious is The Dome, with its enormous classical columns built in 1845 as the head office of the Commercial Bank, but there are others too. Contini’s was once a Bank of Scotland branch and The Standing Order pub, built in 1874 for the Union Bank, still has its old 30-tonne safe intact in one of the side rooms. Retailers too have left their mark on the street’s buildings. Gray’s, the famous Edinburgh firm of ironmongers traded on George Street for 160 years, and their old shop still stands at

number 89. It has a distinctive Renaissance inspired design, with many intricate details. What is now Austin Reed’s is actually one of Edinburgh’s first modernist buildings, built around 1924 for M. Cleghorn & Co who specialised in luxury trunks and leather goods. Trotters Opticians at 44 George Street had a more unassuming shopfront, but an interesting story. Over the years, new shopfronts were built out from the ground floor of this Georgian building, but in 1985 Trotters decided to reinstate a more traditional look. The later additions were removed, returning the building to something like its original form, but if you look closely at the top of the columns either side of the main door you can see they represent pairs of spectacles. TRADE SECRETS

It’s all about the… mirrors, lighting, flooring. Four experts share how to make your home look like you’ve hired an interior designer.

Kirsten Robeson Interior designer and managing director of Cameron Interiors, www.cameroninteriors.co.uk

“Kitchens and bathrooms are the places to focus on at home. They take the biggest battering, transform homes and sell properties. Do the spaces right and you really will achieve that wow factor. You don’t need to blow your budget every time either, if you keep to the lower end of a good quality product you can buy well. The whole point is to keep the design simple.

“For standout designs I like the galleries in Stockbridge or tend to shop online, I really like websites that specialise in Swedish design. For room inspiration I’d recommend Houzz. It’s really taken off and they have some great room shots which include information about the products and the designer. We often have clients bring in ideas they’ve seen on the website.

TRADE SECRETS | 47

“If someone was querying whether to use wallpaper or paint on the walls, I would say it depends on the house. If it’s ultra-contemporary, I don’t think wallpaper works because you need a harder finish but that could just as easily be timber or stone rather than paint. In older properties, turn of the century wallpaper works well. In my own home I’ve used paint juxtaposed with wallpaper from Timorous Beasties and the wallpaper is more like artwork.”

MY TOP FIVE TIPS TO CREATE A ST YLISH HOME 1. Flooring is very imp

many different styles –

that

rhead lighting, position lamps properly. Pay attention to the wiring; you can wire lamps to the main ligh t switch. 4. Don’t follow fashion trends for uber-contemp orary finishes. Use classic mat erials that won’t date. 5. Don’t feel the need to fill every wall, you’re allowed to leave space.

Kate Smith Interior designer and director of Four Dots Design, now located within Home at Six in Polwarth, www.fourdotsdesign.co.uk

“Interior design doesn’t have to be expensive, you just need to invest in key items. For example if you’re looking for a new sofa and want something a bit different, consider getting a cool shape or design classic but select a neutral fabric. It’s much more cost effective to transform a room by changing the colourway of your accessories and soft furnishings. Rugs are great for this, whether it’s a hall runner or bold flood of

colour in a bedroom or lounge, Alternative Flooring and Harlequin have some lovely options. But keep it simple and let the items you love breathe and stand out. As Mies van der Rohe summed it up, ‘less is more’.” “If I could splurge anywhere it would be on good lighting, whether it be directional or atmospheric. Lamps create soft mood lighting but an oversized chandelier gives the wow factor. For statement pieces I love Tangram, Moleta Munro and Life Story. Creating a focal point in a room is also important. In somewhere like a lounge a fireplace with a large oversized mantel above creates a feature but also provides a feeling of relaxation and warmth. If you have an open plan kitchen diner invest in a new kitchen to connect the two spaces in colour and finish.”

MY TOP FIVE TIPS TO CREATE A STYLISH HOME 1. Uncluttered, carefully considered space allows you to use an area to its full potential. 2. Create an ambience by diffusing light through placement of side lamps. 3. Keep to a colour scheme. I’d suggest a colour palette throughout based around three colours. 4. Stay true to reflecting your own personality. 5. Add texture by combining things like smooth surfaces, shaggy rugs, silky details and textured papers.

Miriam Carr Design assistant at Jeffreys Interiors, www.jeffreys-interiors.co.uk

“A mirror is a great statement piece in any room. It gives the illusion of space, reflects all types of light and adds style. At the moment I love Julian Chichester’s Random Mirror (pictured). For other quirky ideas Jeffreys Interiors showroom is a treasure trove for stand out pieces, and creating new layouts to inspire. Our new showroom in Dunkeld is also great. “Depending upon the client, the budget could be spent on a statement piece such as an impressive chandelier or flooring – it provides a base for everything to be built upon and makes a huge impact on the overall feel of the room.

To add interest to walls I prefer to use a wallpaper. It creates different textures and a larger range of colours than a flat paint. Just because you use a wallpaper doesn’t mean the paintwork of the skirting boards/cornices/ceiling need to be white either. It’s often much more effective to pull out colours from the paper. “It’s the clever use of detail that really finishes off a room though and although these can quietly blow your budget it’s important not to overlook the ‘little things’. Cushions and curtain trims add extra colours and textures to create a bespoke interiors that you won’t find on the shelf.”

MY TOP FIVE TIPS TO CRE ATE A STYLISH HOME 1. Avoid expensive mistakes. Don’t

be stuck with that red sofa you don’t like but feel you should keep. 2. Trends can date quickly so go with what you like. 3. Comfort is crucial. Always add textures. 4. Work with your lifestyle. If you’v e no time to dust avoid clutter. 5. Make sure there are lots of items within your home that make you smile. Home is where the heart is after all.

Hazy Days by Marset

Dixie Mirowski Interior designer and director of Catalog Ltd, www.cataloginteriors.com

“If you’re looking for room inspiration try Pinterest and Instagram. Most interior designers and design shops now have accounts and on Instagram you’ll see fresh new trends and interior designed rooms every day. “For a statement piece to transform a space I would probably suggest a stunning lamp like a central pendant lamp or a feature floor lamp. I’d also go for a feature mirror in an entrance hall or living room. The main thing is to spend money on pieces that you’d like to last. A really good quality bed and mattress are so important. Likewise a durable and comfortable sofa. Many of us spend a great deal of time on the sofa, so comfort and quality of the materials can effect or posture and even our health. “For contemporary designs the go to shops would be Anthropology, Life Story, Tangram, Moleta Munro and Catalog, of course. Concrete Wardrobe is always featuring young and upcoming designers. A while ago I made a trip out to Drum Farm Antiques and was pleasantly surprised at their selection of pieces too.”

MY TOP FIVE TIPS TO CRE ATE A STYLISH HOME 1. Make sure that you have sever

al different sources of light in each room. 2. Try to be true to yourself, there ’s nothing worse than a home that looks like a show house. Pick pieces that you love and build your collection slowly and organically. 3. Be a style savvy person and comb ine designer brands with the high street. 4. Don’t be afraid of dark walls; if you’re toying between two shades, go darker. 5. If you’re not sure about scale, go bigger, especially with central lights. There’s nothing worse than a small shade hanging in the centre of a room.

On the Swedish island of Gotland lies Fabriken Furillen, a striking 15 room boutique hotel by the Nobis Group. Built on what used to be military land, the former limestone factory is impressive in its isolation and the bareness of its surroundings. An ethereal beauty encompasses the property, with mountains of gravel and its central concrete tower dominating the scenery. The myriad shades of grey and white mirror the surroundings, and the use of modern Scandinavian design in the interiors gives a warm and welcoming feel.

Gastwerk Hotel, Hamburg, Germany

From a coal storage facility to an animal feed factory, the Gastwerk Hotel embraces its 120 year history in every aspect of its design – you can almost feel its hardworking history from the huge vaulted entrance hall (formerly home to 5,000 tons of coal) and exposed brick throughout. The 141 modern rooms, lofts and suites are finished with glass and steel oozing unique industrial style.

Something niche... BYREDO

Byredo is a Stockholm based fragrance and design house founded in 2006 by Ben Gorham. Gorham, a former professional basketball player, relies on his memories and past experiences as the basis for his fragrances. His first fragrance, Green, created with perfumer Pierre Wulff, was inspired by Gorham's childhood memories of his Canadian father; his latest addition, Mojave Ghost, is a tribute to the rare ghost flower of the arid Mojave Desert. Now working in collaboration with perfumers Olivia Giacobetti and Jerome Epinette on mostly unisex fragrances, the heavily tattooed Gorham keeps the formulas simple, preferring to create fragrances with fewer notes because, according to him, their existence is justified.

W

hilst I’m all for a bit of DIY, when it comes to the world of beauty and prepping nothing beats a pampering session with the experts for that transformational effect. And it doesn’t come much better than at All About Eve. Established in 2007, the Bruntsfield based nail bar and beauty boutique is a one stop beauty shop brimming with top brands and treatments. The salon offers everything from a classic manicure to gel nails with a fashion forward look (think pointy stiletto nails seen on everyone from Kim West to Rihanna) - I opted for a standard shellac, £26. After experiences at other salons in the past, and with my own at home shellac kit, I was dubious as to the lasting power of a shellac manicure, and the state it would leave my nails in. But, owner Eve transformed my ragged, dry nails into well-manicured coral beauties that have gone the distance. From great cuticle work to even better application, two weeks later and my nails are still perfect. Next was my professional make-up session. Make-up artist Elena Spinks is a hidden gem, a natural beauty that honed her impressive skills at MAC. Friendly and engaging, she talked through my preferences on colour and coverage, creating a look that was ‘me’… just much, much better than I could ever have achieved. My hour long appointment, which was also educational, gave me picture perfect smoky eyes and contoured skin which lasted the entire night and only cost £35. I am hooked. 26 MILES YOUR WAY Walkers and runners should take note of two differently paced 26 mile events this month. First up is the Kilt Walk on 03 May. Kicking off from Murrayfield, 4,000 walkers will be serenaded by a pipe band whilst taking in historic sites, views and pit-stops for charity. More competitive types can prepare for “the fastest marathon in the UK” as the two day Edinburgh Marathon Festival gets underway from London Road on 30 and 31 May. To give some scale to the uninitiated; a full loop of Edinburgh bypass will add around 26 miles to your odometer… ouch. For more information visit www.thekiltwalk.co.uk or www.edinburgh-marathon.com

CHOCOLATE PROTEIN No, its not an oxymoron. Dram-atics words ∙ Dean Newton

S

hort of kilts, haggis, bad weather and golf, few things exemplify Scottish heritage and passion like whisky. However, the old fashioned image of Harris Tweed and fireside drams is slowly being met with increasingly modern slants such as molecular cocktails and haute cuisine pairings. Whichever side of the Spey you sit, you’ll find something relevant around Edinburgh this May to celebrate Whisky Month. Those looking to take whisky’s complexities to the next level need look no further than Jelly & Gin’s Create:Eat:Whisky. Running from 14 - 17 May, and sponsored by the David Beckham fronted brand, Haig, it’ll take you on a multi-sensory journey matching whisky-based drinks with tastes, sounds, sights and smells. Conversely you can get back to basics in the shadow of the castle at the Scotch Whisky Training day on 14 May, here you’ll learn all aspects of malt whisky culminating in creating your very own blend to take home. Finish your day with a

stroll down the Royal Mile to Whiski Bar for a tasting session, choose from nearly 300 malt whiskies while enjoying live Scottish music from 9.30pm every night. Over in the Botanics, chefs and scientists will guide you through an evening exploration of the links between whisky and one of Scotland’s other great exports, honey. Tastings, chemistry lessons, street food and a silent disco are some of the attractions at The Hive and The Still event on 15 May, part of the Botanics:Late series. If you’d rather get straight down to the nitty gritty then perhaps The Whisky Stramash is more your dram. A potentially dizzying selection of over 200 varieties will be available to sample from guest producers from around the country throughout the three day celebration from 23 - 24 May. DINNER @ THE POTTING SHED

WHAT: The newly relaunched restaurant at Potterow. WOULD SUIT: Anyone looking for light bites with a little more substance. PRICE RANGE: £3 - £9. words ∙ Rebecca McCosh

P

erhaps it was playing on the psyche of the Edinburgh tenement dwellers who longed for a taste of the outdoors. Or perhaps it was just simply a nod to a favourite pastime of the founder. Either way, the café, bar and kitchen took the name ‘The Potting Shed’ and from that point committed whole-heartedly to a gardening theme, setting the scene with its rustic décor of corrugated iron walls and terracotta pot light fittings. Having recently undergone a menu revamp, The Potting Shed has moved away from street food and created a much more sophisticated menu showcasing the best in fresh, Scottish produce and locally sourced ingredients. The menu itself comprises lots of small dishes for tapasstyle grazing and sharing. Three or four dishes per person was the recommendation so we kicked off with the ‘Nibbles’

menu, starting with sourdough bread, cold pressed rapeseed oil and a fresh and lively tomato acete, £3. Next, whitebait served with a zesty lime and coriander mayo, £4, and finally squash and onion fritters with a creamy tzatziki, £3. ‘From the sea’ we opted for the squid and gazpacho salad, served with a light lemon and black peppercorn dressing, £6. Unlike the more squeamish of diners, I found it refreshing to see the squid served tentacles and all. As with the whitebait, which was served whole. ‘From the land’ we chose the lamb rump with wild garlic and baby turnip, £7.50. Pink, tender and singing with roasted garlic, this dish was definitely worthy of a ‘Best in Show’ rosette. In contrast to this pared-back classic, we tried the ginger and cinnamon marinated pigeon accompanied by seeded cous cous and hazelnut dukka, £7.50. As full-

THE POTTING SHED HAS MOVED AWAY FROM STREET FOOD AND CREATED A MUCH MORE SOPHISTICATED MENU SHOWCASING THE BEST IN FRESH, SCOTTISH PRODUCE bodied as a Merlot, the pigeon was intensely flavoured, with distinctly Far Eastern flavours adding a surprising edge to our meal. For dessert we chose a double chocolate and ale brownie, served with buttermilk ice cream, £5. Unlike the brownies I’ve previously mistakenly ordered at the end of a meal, abandoning them after being defeated by one stodgy mouthful, this brownie was light and fluffy, with the buttermilk ice cream cutting through to add an extra kick. For those looking for a new taste experience, the diverse Potting Shed menu offers more choice than you can shake a pitchfork at. Don’t be fooled by its location in the heart of Edinburgh’s studentsville, they offer quality, carefully considered dishes at great prices. LUNCH @ THE PORTOBELLO PALM TREE

lap bang on Portobello High Street in the site of the former Three Monkeys pub, you’ll find the new ‘Porty Palm Tree’ brought to you by the team behind The Lioness of Leith. With its huge south-facing beer garden, complete with obligatory palm tree, Caribbean shack and hip hop tunes, the lads here are bringing a touch of exoticness and a good dose of sunny vibes to Porty’s shores. Smoky smells coming from the grill and wood fired clay oven and a chilled atmosphere instantly evoke memories of days spent in a faraway land. Sam Simpson, founder of street food business, City of Avalon, is there to serve up his Jamaican street food and fresh pizzas straight from the shack. The menu is simple and streamlined offering two meat options and one veggie from the grill, with a glorious array of sides to accompany them, and a simple pizza menu to be topped with a few delicious ingredients. Being the greedy guts that I am, with a rather large other half to feed, we

opted to try the lot. Pork marinated in mango, chilli, lime and ginger, £7.50, and Moroccan spiced chicken thighs, £7, were dutifully stuffed into whole wheat wraps while we heaped on delightful homemade Jamaican slaw and Chimichurri sauce. They were oh-so moreish and delicately spiced that I challenge even the biggest spice-phobe to not hoover it all up. Pick from one of the sides (included within the Grill price); Jamaican slaw, spiced cous cous salad and chilli and lime buttered corn on the cob to accompany your grill choice. Although verging on too full we still managed to devour the delicious, smoky wood fired pizza topped with Milano salami, Prosciutto and roasted red peppers, £9. What an enjoyable experience; cool, unpretentious and downright delicious, The Portobello Palm Tree is an absolute gem of an addition to the Porty eating and drinking scene. V Deep, photo by Paul Johnston

V Deep Filling the curry void in our stomachs is V Deep. The Indian restaurant is a collaboration between Hardeep Singh Kohli and the team behind The Vintage, whose home it now occupies. Perfect for beers after work, cocktails before heading into town or a bite to eat with friends, you’d be a clever fox to check it out. Good for… lunch or dinner. Or just some well-made drinks. Expect to pay… about £6.50 for a cocktail or £3.60 for a Black Fox lager. Anything else? They do open mic nights and ale tastings. Check out their Facebook page for more details. 17 Albert Pl, EH7 5HN, Tel: 0131 553 2268, www.blackfoxleith.com.

GREAT VALUE

HIDEAWAY HEAVEN

Marquis de Goulaine Sauvignon, 2013, £8.50 This French, Loire Valley Sauvignon offers a very good alternative to more expensive Sancerre or Pouilly Fume from the same valley. Crisper and fresher than its New Zealand counterpart, it goes well with light fish dishes.

Hidden up one of the Old Town’s labyrinth alleyways you’ll find the Secret Arcade, a Polish hideaway that takes vodka very seriously. A staggering array of flavours and gourmet blends are available alongside mad scientist style molecular cocktails. Secret Arcade, 48 Cockburn St, EH1 1PB, www.secret-arcade.com.

RISING STAR Domaine Astruc Marsanne, 2013, £9.99 A real break away from Sauvignons and Chardonnays and along similar lines to the Viognier grape, this Rhone variety offers a rich, complex flavour with hints of vanilla and peaches ending with a very clean, dry finish. Great accompaniment to mushroom and cheese dishes.

THE CLASSIC Mirador De Navajas Crianza, Rioja, £10.50 As a vendor of wines for nearly 40 years when asked the question “what is your favourite wine?” I always say Rioja. The rounded flavours from the Tempranillo grape have background hints of smoke and oak. A classic accompaniment to lamb or peppered steak.

NEW IN TOWN New hot spot OX184 is already making its mark on the city’s Old Town. If you pay it a visit try the signature burger and the Pickleback - a shot of pickling brine taken after a whisky. OX184, 184-186 Cowgate, EH1 1JJ, Tel: 0131 226 1645, www.ox184.co.uk.
