What brings you to Edinburgh? We’re in town playing lots of great Pink Floyd songs from Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Division Bell. What attracted you to music? As a child I was fascinated by the piano in our lounge room and my passion for music developed from there. What’s the highlight of your career so far? It’s hard to pick out just one. Playing in some of the world’s great venues such as the O2 in London or the Bell Centre in Montreal is up there. What’s your prized possession? My Hammond Organ, it was played by Rick Wright at David Gilmour’s 50th birthday party. What are the best things in life… music, love, good friends, time to think and reflect. LONDON GRAMMAR Words: David Pollock

I

t says a lot about the level of expectation attached to young Nottingham trio London Grammar’s early days that the biggest setback of their career so far came before they’d even released their debut record. Last September the album If You Wait emerged, and the timing of it – a few days before the announcement of 2013’s Mercury Prize shortlist – wasn’t seen as a coincidence. In fact, the band

had been installed as the bookmaker’s favourite to win the prize before the record had even come out. In the event, however, it wasn’t nominated. Although there might have been some consolation in the fact that the batch of records which did get the nod was lambasted in some quarters for being a rather safe and obvious selection, it felt at the time as if the band had experienced something

MUSIC | 13

...THE ALBUM STILL REACHED NUMBER TWO IN THE CHARTS, HAS BEEN CERTIFIED GOLD AND WILL SEE THE BAND TOUR AUSTRALIA, THE UK AND NORTH AMERICA IN 2014 IN SUPPORT OF IT

of a stumble on their smooth glide to the top. Yet with hindsight it doesn’t look like such a disaster – the album still reached number two in the charts, has been certified gold and will see the band tour Australia, the UK and North America in 2014 in support of it. The group came together in 2009 in the same way so many do, as an outlet for musical youths in the first year of university looking to try and do something a bit interesting with their free time. In this case, so legend has it, guitarist Dan Rothman was the main mover. He first met singer Hannah Reid in Nottingham University halls of residence, and after later seeing a photo of her wielding a guitar on Facebook he asked her to join a band with him. Drummer, keyboard player and percussionist Dot Major would later be recruited through a friendship with Rothman’s girlfriend. Their first track Hey Now emerged on YouTube in December of 2012, and it set the tone for what was to come. Although much has been made of the band’s electronic

edge, there’s precious little to their repertoire which inspires getting on the dancefloor, aside from at the end of the night slow dance point. The debut single Metal & Dust and Wasting My Young Years (about a former relationship of Reid’s) have carried on their template of minimal piano and/or sparse electronic production creating the perfect conditions for Reid’s great voice, which combines unexpected depth with a soothing choral quality to offer a much mellower counterpoint to the same-but-different style of Florence and the Machine’s Florence Welch. Her recent vocal contribution to the lazy electronic groove of Disclosure’s Help Me Lose My Mind suggests they can go full dancefloor if they want, a good trick to have up their sleeve when it’s eventually time to have another crack at the Mercury with album number two. London Grammar play the ABC, Glasgow, Tuesday 11 February. www.londongrammar.com

orn and bred Edinburgh lass and founder of the Cheynes Group of hair salons and training companies, Jennifer Cheyne has had much to celebrate since launching her salon group in 1976. The latest reason for cracking open a bottle of bubbly was being awarded an OBE for her services to hairdressing and charity in the Queen’s New Year 2014 Honours List. Here she shares her Edinburgh with us. What gives Edinburgh its edge? Its beauty and history. Is there anything that would place Edinburgh more firmly on the map? A larger variety of direct flights from Edinburgh airport, without having to go through London. Which area of Edinburgh best reflects your personality? The Forth Floor Champagne and Chocolate Bar in Harvey Nichols. If you could change one thing about the city… I’d lift Queens Street Gardens and put a huge underground car park below and then put the gardens back on top again. I hope the planners read this. The best place to go on a Sunday? A walk on Gullane beach then The Old Clubhouse or Archerfield Golf Club for lunch.

Around the city - where you’ll find me: Dining out: Honours, Prestonfield or The Dogs. Lunch with friends: Ondine. Having my haircut: Any of the six Cheynes salons with any of the stylists.

Sam and Josephine Taylor Photo: Susie Lowe

am and Josephine Taylor met 25 years ago and own the Creative Arts Gallery. Here they tell i-on about working together and pretending to retire. Sam on Jo: “I asked Jo out to an Italian in Notting Hill for our first date. I thought she was wonderful, and I still do to this day. Jo has had a life long interest in art. At one time or another she has done painting, fashion and textiles. Her eye for detail and an innate ability to judge other people always impress me. We complement the effort of the other by allowing them to take the lead in their area of expertise. I think that’s very important. “I wouldn’t say our relationship has changed much, as we have always worked well as a team. Once, we bought and renovated a number of properties in London and Guernsey, so I suppose we’ve always been motivated and creative. Our biggest challenge was starting our own business and working for seven months without earning a penny. I hope that we continue to make a success of our current venture and grow old with dignity.” Jo on Sam: “We met in 1978 while working for a healthcare company. There was a mutual attraction so it didn’t take us long to get together. Essentially we’re both retired but we just can’t seem to stop working. “I run an online gallery, and Sam has cut back his commitments as a chairman of a number of companies to assist me with developing the brand. Sam needs to work at something and retains his desire to be successful in whatever he does. I think that’s what I admire about him most. Working together is great because it means we’re able to see a lot of each other. At home we get on just as well. After all, we’ve lived together for 30 years - I do have to remind him to pick his shoes up though. He’s such a dreamer but that, along with his determination and generosity, is a great combination.” www.creativeartsgallery.com

THE BRIDE GUIDE The wedding dress. It’s the dress of all dresses, and the single most important outfit a woman will ever wear. So whether you like peplums, frills or lace, here we make things one step easier as five bridal designers talk inspiration and wedding dress trends for 2014.

Jenny Packham

DESIGNER TALK | 25

Stephanie Allin

O

ne of the major wedding trends this year is Great Gatsby themed weddings - think art deco and roaring ‘20s. And if there’s one person that does 1920s style glamour well, it’s British designer Jenny Packham. Synonymous with elegance, Packham's floor length gowns have been seen on everyone from Angelina Jolie to the Duchess of Cambridge. The go-to designer for brides after a dreamy, ladylike wedding gown,

a selection of her modernised vintage style dresses can be found at Pan Pan on Buccleuch Street. The designer has always loved the ‘20s and the whole Art Deco time, and has cited it as the most amazing era for style and design. Her elegant designs for wedding dresses this year boast streamline silhouettes, floaty sleeves and dipped neck lines complemented with light fabrics and adorned with intricate

Freya Designer Dressmaking

beading and lace. So forget about outlandish dresses for 2014 because according to Packham the strapless, big dress has had its day. Stephanie Allin is another designer out to add a dose of 1920s glamour to your big day. “For my 2014 collection, The Look of Love, I have used the most exquisitely handpicked beaded fabrics, beautiful silk satins and delicate Italian lace to create the most flattering and easy to wear shapes.”

Taking inspiration from the timeless, romantic style of luxury London in the ‘20s and ‘30s, Stephanie’s designs are available at Lamesley Bridal on Broughton Street and full of romantic chiffon skirts with draped bodices, jewelled necklines and asymmetric lace features. Closer to home bespoke wedding gown designer, Mette Baille, at Edinburgh’s Freya Designer Dressmaking on Cumberland Street is creating a texturised sensation for

Ian Stuart

SS14. “This spring we’re looking at 3D features on gowns” designer and seamstress, Mette Baille, tells i-on. “To create added texture and a more intricate look for the 3D lace I’m using a very fine Chantilly lace with the heavier Guipure lace,” Mette added. “We’re moving on from vintage but there’s still an element of old times in bridal wear. Picking different elements from different eras reinvents and reworks classics for a more sophisticated look.”

Classic designs never date and one designer that prefers a timeless, clean cut design is Stuart Parvin. “Less is definitely more for 2014, with clean chic lines and perfectly proportioned design features. My bridal collection consists of a variety of silhouettes and fabrications, all staying true to my signature aesthetic of glamorous, understated luxury,” Stuart explained. “Lace is certainly prevalent; full lace gowns with illusion necklines, a classic column shape

and a simple, well-proportioned lace accent on a show stopping fishtail,” he added. For ladies that prefer something larger and fuller frills take on a slightly more flamboyant design from Ian Stuart. “My 2014 Frill Me collection is very yin and yang. Conscious of the current changes in bridal wear and the trend for simplicity, I have created gowns that capture this mood, whilst keeping true to my own handwriting,” he reveals. Ian’s striking collection, available at La Novia Bridal Shop, includes “exaggerated silhouettes, inventive pattern cutting and elaborate decorative techniques.”

OUR WEDDING, OUR WAY Be inspired as six couples share their big day with i-on…

Sarah and Paul Johnston Married on 16 March 2013 Venue: The Caledonian Hotel

W

e were really relaxed about planning our wedding and just enjoyed being engaged for around nine months. Then, one night over dinner we decided to set a date and turned around the whole wedding in five months. I knew I wanted an elegant wedding with luxury touches. Great food and fine wine was important to Paul and the setting was crucial to us both – city centre and an impressive backdrop that didn’t need to be heavily dressed. We wanted an atmospheric venue with character that allowed us to have an intimate ceremony and reception for 60 followed by a big party in the evening and found it in the Caledonian Hotel. Our reception room, the Castle Suite, was a beautiful listed room with Scottish wildlife frescos, chandeliers and views of Edinburgh Castle whilst

our ceremony was in the Boardroom, an oak panelled room again with views across to the Castle. The hotel had just undergone a multi-million pound revamp and the transformation was dramatic. I was very relaxed about a colour scheme and let my one bridesmaid, my sister, choose her own dress including the colour. Her only brief was to avoid very bright or girlie colours so she opted for a rich grape colour. From there, we worked up a colour scheme for the flowers which was ivory, and soft muted pink to complement the grape dress. I was more particular with the theme and overall look of the wedding which had to be very classic and romantic. We invested in dramatic flower displays for the reception tables, whilst the ceremony room was filled with storm lanterns and flower displays. We hired chair covers with raw silk tie backs and used these for both the ceremony and reception. The Caledonian provided floor length ivory linen table clothes, fine cutlery, china and glassware for the reception room. For me, the devil was in the detail.

Susie and Alan Bruce Married on 13 April 2013 Venue: Solsgirth House

O

nce you get engaged you can’t help but be drawn into the world of wedding magazines and TV shows. While the large sized wedding magazines had gorgeous photo shoots I actually found the smaller, A5 sized magazines more useful when it came to inspiration and practical advice. I also loved watching celebrity wedding planner David Tutera’s show My Fair Wedding for the sheer decadence of some of his creations. It took us just under a year to organise the wedding and we got married at Solsgirth House near Dollar. When I was buying my dress (which was bought very quickly and on a whim) the assistant, Kirsty, suggested the venue. After seeing some pictures I called the venue and when I went to see it with my mum and sister, I immediately knew it was

the place. I loved how beautiful the house looked and that it still retained that private family - albeit pretty grand - house feel. We also loved that we had exclusive use and that the majority of our guests hadn’t been before and heard very good reports on the food and staff. I wanted to create an elegant wedding that befitted the surroundings of Solsgirth House so I chose traditional letterpress invites in ivory and powder blue ink to match the venue’s ballroom and the bridesmaid dresses. I liked the styling of a couple of American weddings in which silver rose bowls and silver candelabras were used to dress the tables so set about buying lots of silver rose bowls from eBay and Jordana Events supplied the candelabras. I also hired silver Chiavari chairs and silver chargers to carry

on the silver theme and we bought lucky silver sixpences as favours for the male guests. To ‘warm up’ the silver I chose soft pastel coloured flowers, which also tied in with the ballroom at Solsgirth House, and gifted pastel coloured vintage style handkerchiefs as favours to the female guests. We had a lot of personal touches on the day and this included photographs of both our parents’ weddings in the entrance – my father sadly passed away in the October before the wedding but I very much wanted his presence felt.

Our favourite things It had to be seeing so many of our friends from all over the world together for the first time and getting on so well. A close second would be the moment we had together straight after the ceremony when Jan, Solsgirth House’s GM, thrust a glass of Champagne into our hands and told us to just relax and savour the moment. We also had the fabulous

string trio Airs & Graces Edinburgh perform before and during the ceremony. They played an instrumental version of Kissing You, which was the love theme from Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet for my entrance.

Tara and William Goodall Married on 24 May 2013 Venue: Mansfield Traquair

I

t was a friend on a night out that told me William fancied me. I thought he looked quite cute so gave him my number. Seven years on and the proposal still came as a shock, mostly because William had told me it would be a while until he popped the question as he was saving for the ring. All that changed on our way home from a relaxing break on Loch Rannoch. He took me on his favourite childhood walk, The Birks of Aberfeldy, and when we reached the top waterfall I turned around and he was on one knee. I cried for about two hours and rang everyone I knew. We got married 11 months to the day after the proposal which gave us plenty of time to plan the wedding. Being from an Irish family I wanted a big traditional wedding with

my family and best friends involved so we had a full Catholic ceremony at St Mary’s Cathedral. We were then piped down Broughton Street to our beautiful wedding venue Mansfield Traquair. The wedding party consisted of four bridesmaids, four groomsmen, a flower girl and three junior ushers. I also had friends read blessings and William’s sisters read specially selected poems. We had 200 daytime guests, half of which travelled across the world to be there so it meant a lot to us. We had a further 50 guests at night. In true Irish tradition we also held a party the night after at the Sheraton Grand Hotel and Spa. It was a full Scottish ceilidh and finished with a fantastic Irish singsong until 2am.

REAL LIFE WEDDINGS | 37

Our favourite things Our wedding band The Saturns were fabulous. They did a range of songs to ensure all age groups got up to dance and finished with the traditional Auld Lang Syne. I also love the photo we used for our thank you card, we both look so happy. The priest who married us was my dad’s cousin, Father Liam Power, who came over especially from Waterford, Ireland, to conduct the ceremony. My auntie, Maria Quilty, sang all the songs during the ceremony and she had just finished treatment for breast cancer so this was very touching too.

Gino and Lucy Stornaiuolo Married on 07 September 2013 Venue: Gosford House

W

e met at a friend’s late night party six and a half years ago and got engaged on the Brooklyn bridge in NYC with the Manhattan skyline as the backdrop. We planned the wedding in just under a year and wouldn’t change a thing about it. Choosing the wedding venue was the easy part. Lucy had always wanted to get married out of town in a stately home and as soon as we drove up the driveway to Gosford House in Longniddry we knew it was the place. It’s stunning. The venue really doesn’t need much dressing but we chose a navy blue theme for the five bridesmaid dresses and the ties of the two best men and ushers. We had 155 day guests who dined on a menu of Macsween haggis stacks followed by halibut served with new potatoes or fillet of Scotch beef. Around another 40

guests joined in the evening celebration with Ceilidh band The Thunder Dogs and Edinburgh’s best loved all rounder DJ Cunnie providing the entertainment. Our first dance was to Dream Machine by Mark Farina - we used to dance to the song together many moons ago. The best advice I could give those getting married would be to take a moment together to try and take it all in, the day passes far too quickly so embrace every moment you can.

REAL LIFE WEDDINGS | 39

Our favourite things I have to say the whole wedding was an incredible experience with lots of special moments like Lucy walking down the aisle to Somewhere Over The Rainbow by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole, the vows, speeches and first dance. Our photographer was also amazing so we have lots of great photos. Personal touches made the day special too. Our friend, Helen Mcfeely, designed all of our invitations, menus, table plan and our amazing wooden picket sign. Lucy’s dad’s ceilidh band provided the music and our good friend, Cunnie, played later too.

Joanne and Scott Robertson Married on 02 March 2013 Venue: Divino Enoteca

I

wasn’t really looking for the one when I met Scott in The Jam House. I had only been single for six months. But, after our first date, I knew he was a keeper. Five months later and we were engaged. We both knew what we wanted - a small, intimate wedding with our best friends and family. Our aim was to have as much fun as possible. We didn’t want to get married in a church so we chose Lothian Chambers registrars office for its great location and gorgeous interiors. We had the reception for 40 at Divino Enoteca wine bar which was just perfect for us. From the good Italian food to amazing wine and candle light, it was atmospheric, warm and cosy. If you’re organising a wedding my advice is to do it your way and stay calm. It’s meant to be the best day of your life so don’t get stressed about little things. They usually work themselves out and if they don’t then it wasn’t meant to be.

Our favourite things Walking down the aisle to my sister, Jenny, singing Annie’s Song by John Denver with her friend Andrew on guitar. We also had a fantastic band called The Honeymoons which I’d highly recommend. We found them through Freak Music. The sing song at the end of the night was also great – we have so many family songs and dedicated a few to those who are no longer with us, like my dad.

Sean and Dominique Seymour Married on 30 November 2012 Venue: Hopetoun House

W

e met New Year 2007 out in George Street with mutual friends and got engaged on Christmas Eve 2011. Sean had lots planned for the proposal but ended up getting down on one knee in the early hours of Christmas Eve when we were having a bit of a heart to heart as it felt like the right moment for him. I never had my wedding planned out in my head so we really did start from scratch when it came to planning. I looked through lots of magazines and scoured the internet for ideas. We loved the idea of a winter wedding with lots of candles and a little bit of sparkle. We chose Hopetoun House because it ticked every box for us. A stunning stately home set in beautiful grounds, it was perfect for our winter wedding theme and the gorgeous open fireplaces and spectacular ballroom suited our candelabra centrepieces perfectly. We were so

well looked after by their amazing wedding coordinator, Jennifer McAuslane, and Linda Martin from Heritage Portfolio. Together with their team they made our day go perfectly. As soon as we had decided on a winter wedding I immediately thought "evening dresses" for bridesmaids and after trying on lots of styles we decided that black full length dresses with a touch of lace and cream were the favourite. Sean and his best man were in full custom tweed kilts and all the rest of the boys and men in the wedding party were in matching trews with tweed jackets from Kiltpin. The rest of our theme took on a vintage/art deco look. All our stationery on the day (order of service, menus etc) was cream with black as were our cars - a 1930 Rolls Royce Phantom along with other vintage Rolls Royces for the ladies and a campervan for the boys.

REAL LIFE WEDDINGS | 43

Our favourite things It’s hard to be specific but some special moments were getting ready in the morning with my family then when Sean and I both caught each others eye as I walked up the aisle. I loved the speeches; they were all fantastic but my Dad’s was especially touching and I still shed a tear when I watch it back. We also had extra touches like setting up two charity donation pages for Cancer Research and Hopscotch as an alternative to gifts, La Favorita’s pizza van instead of an evening buffet and the spectacular fireworks display by 21cc.

intage, classic or romantic? Photo booths, Marryoke or Slo Mo video booths? No matter what the trend forecasts are for 2014, Angela Smith of The Scottish Wedding Show says that the most important part of planning your wedding is making sure that it is everything that you want. “Don’t jump on a trend because it’s a trend but because it’s something that really reflects you and your partner’s personalities or tastes,” she says. “You want to be able to

look back fondly in 30 years and tell your children, ‘That was so us. We still love it’, rather than ‘That was the fashion in those days’”. More brides and grooms are choosing to put a personal stamp on their big day by adding a new twist to old traditions. “String quartets have always been popular at weddings,” says Angela, “but a new slant is to have them play contemporary music such as Coldplay or the Kaiser Chiefs to

appeal to a younger audience. This is a great way to surprise your guests and get them dancing the night away.” Wedding cakes are moving away from the traditional fruit cake to complement the theme of the wedding. Refreshing lemon suits a summer wedding and chocolate is great in winter as it is indulgent and comforting. Individuality can also make its own statement in your choice of chair linen. “Don’t just use chair linen,” Angela says. ”Get beautiful alternatives such as

Chiavari chairs or if you are using linen, think sequins and ruffles, even animal print if that’s your thing.” But perhaps the most prominent mark is being made through food. From chocolate fountains at the start of the noughties to retro sweets tables and gelato tricycles of recent years, we’ve watched food play an extra role at weddings across the land. But in 2014 we’re looking at forgetting the formalities of the traditional wedding breakfast altogether

FACT BOX in favour of a more relaxed dining experience at weddings. We’re moving away from the typical chicken and potato led dish and onto banquet style eating with a spicy twist. Head chef at Appetite Direct, Cat Crawford, tells i-on that couples are now becoming more adventurous. “Stronger flavours are becoming popular. Couples want more exotic dishes and a more relaxed feel to eating so have been looking to the Middle East for influence, and especially Israeli chef Yotam Ottolenghi.” Pick an opulent dish such as the lamb and pistachio kofte (kebab) with dukka (nuts and seeds) and tarator (tahini sauce) alongside meat skewers and rainbow coloured salads with pomegranates and nuts for a healthier wedding breakfast. If spicy foods aren’t your taste, Cat also says that Scandinavian dining is making its way into Edinburgh’s weddings. WEDDING SAVVY The stats are in and if research is to be believed the average wedding now costs more than £18,000. But don’t let that put you off. Here independent wedding planner Joann Scott shares her top tips to cut wedding costs without cutting back on style…

1

Candelabras on tables are a cheaper alternative to flowers and can look just as stylish and elegant. Simple and undressed or decorated with minimal flowers these can be hired from a florist. For something quirkier lounge lamps with candles are another option for table centres. They provide a relaxed, lounging atmosphere with mood lighting effect.

2

3 4

Forget wedding favours, they aren’t common place any more so save your money and put it towards other items on your budget. Think of a fun alternative to canapés. Anything from chocolate dipped strawberries to a doughnut display or hot dog stand may work out less expensive than a formal canapés selection. It’s also a great talking point for guests.

Enlist the help of friends and family. Whether it’s a piper, singer, make-up artist or hair stylist, don’t be afraid to ask people to play a part. It adds a special, personal touch to your big day plus they’ll be delighted to be involved. Always ask for the best price that can be offered by your suppliers. If you don’t ask you shall never know. If you find a venue that offers BYOB remember corkage will still be charged so do your research and if you can get a good deal on Champagne and wines you might want to consider it. Sometimes hiring in chairs from event companies can work out cheaper than hiring linen chair covers and ties. Candy buffets are great for the evening reception and can work out cheaper than a hot buffet. Cheese boards are another option I like to do. Catering for about 70 per cent of guests is normally sufficient.

ust when you thought you had found the ‘facial of all facials’ along comes the HydraFacial. My experience of this no mess facial at Beyond Medispa in Harvey Nichols took skincare as I know it to a whole different level. The HydraFacial uses an ‘all singing all dancing’ machine the newest advance in non laser skin resurfacing - and is the only hydradermabrasion procedure that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection. It’s also the secret behind event night complexions for the likes of Kate Winslet, Paris Hilton and Beyonce. Most importantly though, the super treatment replenishes the skin with antioxidants through Vortex-Fusion®, an application of nutrients to the skin which helps to improve the quality of skin over time and make it healthy. Starting with lymphatic drainage and finishing with LED light therapy to fight ageing and treat damaged skin, the HydraFacial is a relaxing 75 minute treatment and although I was tomato red on leaving the salon, the results were immediate with a considerable improvement in the smoothness of my skin. Highly recommended.

ICONIC EDINBURGH Queensberry House

Words: David Hicks ∙ Photo: Susie Lowe

T

he Scottish Parliament at the foot of the Canongate is one of Edinburgh’s best examples of 21st century architecture, but within the complex of modern buildings is a relic that is over 300 years old – Queensberry House. It was around 1667 that a ‘Grand Lodging’ was first constructed on the site, for Margaret Douglas of Balmakelly. The building was modified and expanded in the years that followed, and in 1686 it was bought by the 1st Duke of Queensberry as his Edinburgh residence. The new Queensberry House was one of the grandest houses in the area. Records show that it boasted 52 rooms with hearths whereas the earl of Argyll at Moray House had only 18. Perhaps the most notorious tale connected to Queensberry House concerns the time of the signing of the Act of Union in 1707. The story goes that the Duke of Queensberry was heavily involved in the negotiations surrounding the act and left his lunatic son unattended at the house. When he returned he found that his son had escaped from his room and roasted and eaten the kitchen boy.

In the 18th century the house was divided up into apartments and slowly it transformed from grand private residence to more public uses. In the early 1800s Queensberry House became a hospital, then a barracks, and eventually in 1834 a house of refuge for the poor. It became a hospital for the elderly in 1945 and in 1997 it was acquired by the government to become part of the new parliament building. Queensberry House underwent extensive renovation and in some ways it has returned to its original appearance. The extra floor added in the 19th century was removed and the exterior stonework has been re-harled and lime washed. One historic feature that has survived in situ now forms part of the Parliament’s Allowances Office. It is a finely moulded stone fireplace, perhaps the very one where the kitchen boy met his grisly end over 300 years ago. David Hicks is communications manager at Edinburgh World Heritage, a charity devoted to conserving and promoting the city’s World Heritage Site. www.ewht.org.uk

A PLACE IN THE SUN

DID YOU KNOW…?

We’ll be fixated on Brazil when the FIFA World Cup kicks off on Thursday 12 June, but step out the Itaquerao Stadium and forget all preconceptions as Sao Paulo is one of the biggest financial centres in the world. Home to high flyers and the rich, Brazil’s largest city was ranked sixth in Forbes List of the Top 10 Billionaire Cities. Popular demand has also meant Brazil has seen the biggest increase in house prices in the world according to Knight Frank’s Global Real Estate Index.

2014 is looking good for house sellers with a seven per cent increase forecasted in house prices in Scotland, the introduction of Help to Buy and demand currently outweighing supply. If you’re looking to sell this year make it stress free with the help of Pagan Osborne. Solicitors as well as estate agents, they offer a full range of expert legal and financial advice. eith offers choice for the gastronome but in recent years, since the closure of La Garrigue and Daniel’s Bistro on Commercial Quay, it’s been lacking a really good French restaurant serving rich classics in the Gallic style. When Bistro Provence opened I was a little sceptical, after all there were big shoes to fill and comparisons would be drawn especially as this restaurant is in the same unit that the aforementioned stalwarts occupied. On first inspection not much had changed from the simple clean décor of the main dining room to the decidedly French welcome. Familiarity could signal a lack of originality but at Bistro Provence the old formula has been respectfully alluded to and new injection of vitality ensures that this is no copy of an old master but an impressionist original. Looking through the menu the keenly priced set lunch looked like great value with two courses for just £12.50.

However we were there on a dark Thursday evening in January so to the dinner menu we turned for a ration of Provencal sunshine. The menu didn’t disappoint, dining companion du jour went for traditional fish soup which was thick and rich, the addition of croutons Emmenthal and spicy rouille only added to the overall indulgence. I’m not sure how typically Provencal this is but a classic French staple well delivered nonetheless. I opted for braised pig trotter with lentil and herb salad; it could have been heavy but the slivers of trotter were delicate and the lentil salad aromatic and perfectly seasoned. Main courses were a difficult decision, but flambéed red snapper sounded like sunshine on a plate and the rich butter and saffron sauce that accompanied the fish was a perfect foil to the soft baked peppers and the anise of the braised

fennel. Mademoiselle chose, somewhat adventurously, the roast rabbit with saffron noodles; the rabbit was tender, moist and generous in portion size while the delicately flavoured pasta didn’t take over the dish. Desserts are always a sticking point in January, but in the interests of ‘research’ I went for crème brulee which was delicious with the addition of a cumin langue de chat. Our other choice of olive oil and sauternes cake with poached winter fruits had no discernable oil or sauternes flavour, but was still devoured. It’s great to have well executed, affordable French cooking on the Shore again. Bistro Provence looks likely to become another institution which is very good news. ALE RENTALS

GOOD VALUE

Never mind foodie takeaways, this year we’ll be picking up takeaway beers. Growlers Beers, launched late last year, are introducing the American style refillable bottle service to the capital’s drinkers. Simply rent a bottle and choose from 12 seasonal craft ales and ciders to fill it with. Growler Beers UK Ltd, 229 Morningside Rd, EH10 4QT, Tel: 0131 447 0022.

Harvey Nichols Rouge, Vin de Pays de L’Aude, France 2012, £8.95. Unoaked, medium bodied and fruit-driven, the attractive sweetly perfumed nose is suggestive of blackberry, cherry, herbs and roast coffee.

RISING STAR Chateau Miraval, Rose, Cotes de Provence, France 2012, £22. Ranked 84 in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of the Year, this wine is from the very best rosé producing region with light red fruit, rose petal and watermelon dominating a nuanced combination of flavours. And the vineyard is owned by Mr and Mrs Brad Pitt.

our favourite find Enjoy a suitably Scottish affair by picking up Jon Baird’s critically acclaimed film Filth on DVD. Set right here in Edinburgh and based on Irvine Welsh’s visceral book, James McAvoy stars as a bent copper whose drug and junk food fuelled quest for promotion causes his life to spiral out of control. Released on 10 February, the DVD also includes commentary from Welsh.

Lovesick Valentine’s is the day to trumpet your love, but for singletons there’s nothing worse than being forced to listen to the din of desire. So while couples across the land are busy shopping for oversized teddy bears, why not reflect on a couple of timely Valentine’s Day truths. In the weeks before the 14th, the price of roses goes up on average 30 per cent. More than one in six American women send themselves flowers on Valentine’s. Saint Valentine was put to death for marrying soldiers with Christians. More home pregnancy tests are sold in March than any other month. Hallmark employs 80 researchers to analyse the sales pattern of previous cards and uses focus groups and in-store observations to hone a range of 2,000 ‘romantic’ cards. Elton John and Renate Blauel, Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid, and Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee all got married on Valentine’s Day. All are now divorced.

DID YOU KNOW...? There’s an English accent spoken almost exclusively by actors. It’s called the Transatlantic accent, a style of speech halfway between American and British - think Katherine Hepburn or Cary Grant. Actors spent hours learning it so they could sound well educated but like they were from nowhere in particular. Try it yourself: drop your Rs (as in ‘fear’), annunciate your Ts (as in ‘butter’) and shape your vowels as if you are very posh (‘dance’ becomes ‘dahns’).
