EXCLUSIVE Introducing…

i-on reader events THE FIRST IN A SERIES OF I-ON READER POP-UP EVENTS WILL BE HARD TO TOP IF YOU’RE A LOVER OF GREAT FOOD AND DRINK.

O

n Monday 28 November i-on will be teaming up with Edinburgh’s restaurant of the moment, Norn, to introduce our readers to the next big thing to come out of the Edinburgh drinks industry, Aelder. Deep, complex and fruity, Aelder (pronounced elder) is a contemporary alcoholic elixir, hand crafted using wild elderberries, botanicals and spices by the team behind pop-up dining experience Buck and Birch. Aelder and Norn follow the same simple, stripped back and natural ethos in their approach to food and drink but both create tastes worthy of the ravest of reviews by the best in the industry.

THE EVENT Our i-on reader event is a fine foodie masterclass in the phenomenal larder of the Scottish wilds. It’s an informal food and drinks pairing evening with the teams behind Aelder and Norn on hand to give a warm welcome, share information about the food and drink, and offer guests the chance to explore nature’s amazing ingredients. Norn will open exclusively for the occasion and guests will be amongst the first to sample the Aelder elixir in four guises; with fizz, as a cocktail, neat and as a warming toddy, with tasting plates to match by Norn. You’ll also be the first to trial a new product in the making from Buck and Birch, revealed on the night. NEED TO KNOW The event takes place on Monday 28 November, from 7-9pm at Norn, 50-54 Henderson St, Leith, EH6 6DE, Tel: 0131 629 2525, www.nornrestaurant.com. Tickets (18s and over only), £37.50 per person, are limited and available at www.ionmagazine.co.uk/aelder. For more information on Aelder visit www.buckandbirch.com.

IN SHORT With Thierry Stern, President of Patek Philippe.

T

hierry Stern is the fourth generation of the Stern family to take the helm of Patek Philippe since 1932. The fiercely independent, family-owned watchmaker was founded in 1851 and, uniquely, still maintains and cares for watches made since the company’s launch. We caught up with him recently in Edinburgh at the launch of the World Time Special Series Ref. 5130P-029, a limited edition watch to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Scotland’s luxury jewellery house Hamilton & Inches on George Street. Three things you never travel without? My watch, when I’m away from home I wear my Travel Time. My phone; I use it when I fly for work and emails; and my iPad where I store all the information I need to, both on our products and the people I’m going to see.

Is there a watch you’re most proud of? No, that’s like asking who your favourite child is. If the watch is ready for launch then that means I’m very pleased with it.

How much are you involved in the design process at Patek Philippe? Fully involved. It’s the best part of the job. Before I became president, I was the head of the creative department like my father, grandfather and great grandfather. My wife does my role now but I look at the drawings, add my ideas and make changes, I'll never give it up.

Are you a watch collector? I guess you could call me a frustrated collector; we have a museum in Geneva with a collection of watches dating back to the 16th century but I can’t wear them. I never wear the new models either because we make so few. If there’s a watch I like, I usually wait two years after the launch before getting one for myself.

22

Patek Philippe World Time to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Hamilton & Inches,

What piece of advice would you give to your younger self? If you’re presented with an opportunity like I was, to take over something important, you should always stay humble and remember you’re only part of something bigger. It’s all about being part of a team.

TAKING A LOOK AT ISA’S When considering the savings and investment options available to you flexibility is important as your circumstances can change at any time. An Individual Savings Account (ISA) provides a valuable, tax-efficient wrapper for cash and investments and there are two types: Stocks & Shares ISA and Cash ISA. The ISA allowance for 2016/17 is £15,240 and will be increasing to £20,000 per person on 06 April 2017. Deciding the option that is best for you can be confusing and the advisers at PW & Partners are available to talk you through your options to ensure you don’t miss out on this valuable tax efficient form of saving for your future. STOCKS & SHARES ISA… LONGER TERM – For five years and over, long-term investing is the best way to help absorb the unpredictable movement of markets Investment can be made each month or via single lump sums The value of a Stocks & Shares ISA will be directly linked to the performance of funds you select and dependent on your attitude to risk Higher risk with potentially higher return Tax efficient growth and income Stocks and shares ISAs can be transferred from provider to provider without effecting any unused allowance for the current year. CASH ISA… SHORT TERM - if you don’t want to take any investment risk and require security of capital You receive interest on your cash at a fixed or variable rate If the rate of inflation is higher than the interest rate you receive then the value of your pot in real terms will be eroded Over £250 billion is deposited in Cash ISAs1, yet the average account is paying interest of just 0.55%.2 Variable rate accounts are normally instant access With fixed term accounts you could lose interest if you need to withdraw cash early.

St. James’s Place Wealth Management is the largest Stocks & Shares ISA provider, drawing on the expertise of some of the world’s top investment professionals to manage ISA funds of £10.7 billion3. The favourable tax treatment given to ISAs is subject to changes in legislation and may not be maintained in the future. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested. Still confused or have questions? Call PW & Partners on Tel: 0131 303 0053 or visit www.pwandpartners.co.uk.

O

ff the record, American singer, songwriter and electronic producer Tom Krell is anything but your typical pop star. Away from the studio he has an MA in philosophy from the New School in New York and a philosophy doctorate from Chicago’s DePaul University and while his music is hard to categorise – pristine, contemporary electronic pop which it’s easy to imagine an X Factor winner belting out, you sense there’s a deep well of loss and experience behind it. A model of millennial rootlessness, Krell was born in Boulder, Colorado, and in between his stints in education in New York and Chicago, he spent some time living in Berlin. Not to put too heavy a point on it, there’s a similar feeling of yearning for belonging to his music, both in the lyric and in the sound of it. After first releasing EPs anonymously under the pseudonym How to Dress Well (and interviewers have noted that he’s a well turned-out guy), he first rose to recognition with the 2010 debut album Love Remains. A dense, dark electronic odyssey, the album offset the purity of his voice with the

26

crunchy, static-heavy sense that it was a nocturnal transmission from the mind of a very laid back talent. The follow up, 2012’s Total Loss, took the same template but ramped up both the presence of icy, avant garde RnB beats at the heart of what Krell does, and the sense of being out there on his own, exploring emotional terrain which most similar artists may be unused to. This is no coincidence, sadly. Both of the first two albums were informed by the death of both Krell’s best friend and his uncle shortly before the first record came out, which steeped them in a sense of mortality; he told the Guardian that he had to scrap and rewrite Total Loss when it was almost finished, because otherwise “I’d become this guy who was famous for being a miserable f***”. Maybe he’s being hard on himself, but there’s a perfect balancing act going on in tracks like Ocean Floor for Everything, which mourns “we never really plan for the worst of things, do we? / then something like this happens…”. Yet in his measured beats and occasional piano and string incursions, there’s a lush sense of hopefulness to Krell’s music. Move on to 2016, and Krell has released both 2014’s What is This Heart? and this year’s Care, and songs from each like Repeat Pleasure and recent singles such as the sugary What’s Up and the gently anthemic Can’t You Tell are like a new artist, or certainly one who has conquered his demons for now. Taken together, his albums are a journey; the live show on 23 November, at Stereo in Glasgow, should be a trip.

NEWS AND VIEWS

Callum Fairweather’s

Dundee 30-year-old Dundee born actor, model and producer, Callum Fairweather has appeared in BBC shows Silent Witness and Pramface all while modelling for brands such as Honda and Trespass. Here he shares some of his Dundee highlights. Career highlight so far? Producing a film for HRM Queen Elizabeth II; and landing the lead role in arthouse film Rearview Park. What does a typical day involve? Contacting agents and casting directors, drinking way too much coffee and Irn Bru, writing scripts and doing push ups.

Best places for… Drinks? The DCA’s Jute Bar - great food, good music and a cool vibe. Shopping? I’m really into luxury Swiss watches and around Union Street is a great place for new and vintage Swiss timepieces. Date night? Get wrapped up, grab a coffee and have a walk around the Howff; a cemetery first used in 1564. It might sound odd but when it’s all lit up, it’s really quite romantic. Quick escape? Arbroath Marina. At certain times of the day you can watch the fishing boats coming in with their creels full of lobsters.

Any new projects in the pipeline? I’ve written several new show ideas that are being pitched to television networks and have just auditioned for a feature film.

What gives Dundee its edge? Its vibrant arts scene. Dundee is becoming a cosmopolitan melting pot of different talents and has the potential to be one of the world’s major cultural centres for the arts in the same way that cities such as Berlin and New York have become.

Arbroath Marina

Where would you take visitors to see the ‘real’ Dundee? The McManus gallery. It shows the history of Dundee and what impact it’s made on the world’s stage. If they want an image that will stick with them, the view from the top of the Law Hill is excellent.

Amanda Mitchell’s

Edinburgh Kept busy with three children and her bustling Thistle Street fashion and lifestyle boutique, Biscuit. Amanda enjoys the best of both worlds living in picturesque East Lothian and working in the bustling capital. What does a typical day involve? If I’m not at the shop, I’m at my office organising deliveries, forecasting for seasons ahead, speaking to suppliers, marketing projects, paperwork and bookkeeping. The shop’s website needs my constant attention too. Your style icon? Growing up, it was Grace Kelly for her pure elegance but now I look towards strong women such as Michelle Obama who know their style. My mother inspires me too. She never leaves the house without looking immaculate.

Best places for… Shopping? I love a good farm shop like Gloagburn in Perthshire. The Restoration Yard in Dalkeith is also stunning. A quick escape? In Edinburgh I’d go to the Botanic Gardens but otherwise I love walking on Tyninghame Beach and a coffee and cake at The Smithy in the village. Eating out? Amarone, a great Italian and treat with the children. Best place for a date night? I like the Bon Vivant for its atmosphere.

TALKING ABOUT… Dine-out at Tigerlily

What’s this all about then? Haven’t Tigerlily run a midweek menu for years? Well yes, for over eight years in fact, and it’s become a well-loved Edinburgh staple. But now, thanks to a partnership with new Tigerlily head chef Eugene Reilly and food luminary Hilary Sturzaker, they’re bringing us a new midweek Dine-Out menu, promising ‘good, honest, local, seasonal food that doesn’t cost the earth’. Essentially, a new concept menu that brings something more to the table. Sounds interesting but why a partnership with a blogger? Recently Tigerlily chefs have enjoyed working with the likes of Gizzie Erskine, Helen Vass and Tony Singh, and collaboration is important to them. They wanted to add some of Hilary’s approach to designing food menus, her ability to incorporate fresh ideas with an authentic approach to food.

44

So do Hilary and Eugene work well together? They share a love of discovering new suppliers and producers so we think you’ll like the results. They’ve spent time together hand-picking from Edinburgh’s Farmers markets, to extend the variety of local produce and suppliers currently used in Tigerlily, and Eugene and the team have then created a menu inspired from their research. Sounds good. What’s on the menu? Dishes change seasonally but you can expect specialities from the likes of Peelham Farm, Belhaven Smokehouse, George Mewes, Summer Harvest, and Seriously Good Venison. The menu will sit alongside the à la carte offering. Is it expensive? That’s the good news. The menu is a brilliant mid-week offer. The price is £15 for two mains at lunch and £15 for two courses in the evening, and it runs Sunday through Friday lunchtime. Find out more at www.tigerlilyedinburgh.co.uk or Tel: 0131 225 5005.

After numerous visits to the original Chophouse in Leith, we were delighted to learn that they were adding a second restaurant and where better than the marvellous Arches development, part of New Waverley in Edinburgh. The uninitiated can expect a sharing culture of dining with large cuts of British beef, butchered in-house then dry aged before being cooked over an open flame charcoal grill. Highlights include starters of fiery BBQ ribs, £7, and hot chicken wings, £7. For mains, we’re all about the juicy Porterhouse steak, £60, dripping chips, £3.50, and charred asparagus, £5.50. Go there for Sunday brunch, lunch or dinner – delicious. Scottish Design Exchange

Running from 18 November to 07 January 2017, this year the festivities expand into the West End; stretching from Festival Square in the West End to St Andrew Square and East Princes Street Gardens. Last year’s stunning 60,000 bulb light display, Street of Light (pictured) is also back but in a new home on West George Street with music from local choirs and bands. Other highlights include the return of the St Andrew Square ice rink, a pop-up Festival Square Theatre and the opening bonanza; Light Night on 20 November when all the Christmas lights are officially switched on. Tasty reasons to love... George IV Bridge LOCATED IN THE BUSTLING OLD TOWN, GEORGE IV BRIDGE STANDS ALONE IN THE WORLD OF FOOD AND DRINK FOR MANY DIFFERENT REASONS. HERE ARE SOME OF ITS HIGHLIGHTS. main photos Susie Lowe

T

he rebirth of George IV Bridge into a vibrant eating and drinking destination started with contemporary bistro style dining at The Outsider in the early noughties and the venue still deserves its reputation as a great spot for brunch, lunch and dinner. The detailed descriptions on the wine list will ensure selection of a wine that perfectly complements the food. Vittoria’s, the master of family dining Italian style, also picked the street as location of choice for its second restaurant, Vittoria on the Bridge, in 2007 and the family

50

run institution is thriving. It offers a home from home experience and a warm Italian welcome for which the Crolla family is renowned. Then came, arguably, the city’s best seafood restaurant, Ondine, opened by chef patron, Roy Brett, who brought with him his passion for seafood and shellfish. The restaurant is elegantly decorated and filled with natural light, making it the ideal choice for a special occasion. Don’t miss the oyster bar’s happy hour (Monday to Friday, 5.30-6.30pm) when oysters are £1 a slurp.

THE VIBRANT EATING AND DRINKING DESTINATION STARTED WITH CONTEMPORARY BISTRO STYLE DINING AT THE OUTSIDER Flying the flag for Scotland is The Cellar Door. A Scottish inspired menu based on local ingredients with a modern twist, the restaurant’s a hidden gem in the city and the chocolate workshops have to be one of its best kept secrets. Even cocktail lovers are catered for on George IV Bridge nowadays. A favourite amongst locals, the Villager serves up fizzes and martinis by the glassful and it’s a great spot for night owls. It’s also a great place for a Sunday roast, ideal for getting rid of a hangover after a night on the town. If coffee and cake is more your bag then we suggest you check out The Elephant House, once J K Rowling’s favoured haunt in the city. And did we mention the traditional pub? No village is complete without one and the George IV Bar is a classic, bursting with real ales and craft beers, pub grub and a 100+ whisky collection to be proud of. Favourite Things

A

nna Shields and Blair Crichton brought their different musical tastes and talents together in January 2016 to create CRYSTAL. In doing so, they’ve also created a band with a unique sound. Writing music inspired by grunge, blues, punk and ‘80s rock, they have just released CRYSTAL’s debut EP Youth which can be streamed and downloaded on Spotify and iTunes. Favourite place to play? Anna: King Tuts. Warm, friendly vibes. Sound is great and I love the aesthetic. Blair: Nice N Sleazy - I like how the venue lets the bands have more control over the night. Playing a gig there is very relaxed and they have a great sound system. Favourite gig? Anna: I really love going to see local Glasgow bands in venues like Broadcast and Nice N Sleazy, to keep up to speed with what is happening in the music scene. Blair: The Prodigy at TITP, I had grown up being a huge fan without ever seeing them play. Favourite album? Anna: Stop Making Sense by Talking Heads. I've never really been a fan of live concert albums but this one is just fantastic. You can feel the energy and passion in the performance by just listening to it.

56

Blair: Elephant by The White Stripes. I bought it when it was originally released and it still sounds as good today as it did then. Favourite new talent? Anna: Declan Welsh. Local Glasgow artist who performs with such enthusiasm and writes the most relatable songs. Blair: From Glasgow, bands such as the Vegan Leather and Das Plastixx would be two of my picks. Also Wolf Alice although they’re aren’t so ‘new’.

I’M DREAMING OF A

EMILY MURRAY, FOUNDER OF INTERIORS INSPIRATION SITE THE PINK HOUSE, COMES BEARING THE GIFT OF HER TWIST ON TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS DECOR 58

INTERIORS

I

Paperchase Mexicana collection

I have a turkey bone to pick with Christmas. Much as I love an excuse to glitter up my home and open a bottle of Champagne (not that an excuse is ever needed in either case), I have serious issues with the Christmas colour scheme. Because while I’m a big fan of clashing colours when it comes to interiors, the one combo I just can’t stand is the Yuletide favourite: red and green. As for the festive season’s sense of style, surely it’s getting a bit dated? I for one have had enough rotund robins, snow dusted Santas and magical mistletoe to last a lifetime. Luckily for me, and anyone who feels similarly, many retailers have also decided that Christmas décor is in desperate need of a makeover. “Tinsel and snowflakes don’t work for everyone,” says DFS design director Philip Watkin, who believes that when it comes to Christmas decorations, you should go with a “throw out the rule book” approach, and choose a theme that feels right for your home: “Your home is your personal space, so it’s important you create a cosy Christmas space that works for you.” I couldn’t agree more, which is why I’ve come up with some non-trad tips to help you decorate your way this Christmas, while keeping things cosy… RAINBOW BRIGHTS As Christmas comes at the darkest time of year, it makes sense to guard against the gloom with your decorations. How about a £14 Rockett St George rainbow baubles and tinsel garland for starters – instead of chucking it on the tree, try draping it around a window, winding it up the bannister or arranging it on the mantelpiece. Or even brighter, Paperchase has a range of rainbow decorations in its Mexicana collection, complete with cactuses, pineapples and pink Christmas trees.

59

INTERIORS

FABULOUS FURNISHINGS If, like me, you believe Christmas is for life, not just for Christmas, a jewel bright, velvet sofa is always a good idea. I love this deep purple Gower velvet large sofa from DFS (£1099; armchair £899). It’s dark enough to act as a foil for a flurry of brightly coloured cushions, including this Tretchikoff cushion from Graham & Green, £65, a range which reimagines Vladimir Tretchikoff’s portraits of women in traditional dress around the world. Add a copper floor lamp (try the Metal Bow copper lamp from 4Living.co.uk, £275), a Christmas tree and some white fairy lights and you’re ready for the alternative Queen’s speech.

DFS Lifestyle

Pom Pom Galore wreath

60

BETTER THAN BAUBLES If you’re a pom-pom fanatic (that’s me), why not use them in place of baubles. I love Pom Pom Galore’s pom-pom wool garland, £39, pom-pom neon baubles (£15 for four) and magenta pom-pom fairy lights, £25. Another of my go-to pom-pom favourites is Yonder Living – its Peruvian tree decorations, £15 each, are handmade from llama wool. For a bright alternative to the standard star, try Paperchase’s pom-pom tree topper, £10.

61

ALTERNATIVE ANIMALS Just because you don’t want a partridge in a pear tree, doesn’t mean your Christmas tree has to lack wildlife – you just need a bit of imagination. Perhaps I can interest you in Paperchase’s tree decorations: there’s a sparkly unicorn £8, a sequinned flamingo, £5, and, for the true non-traditionalist, there’s always a green cheerleading alligator £8. Just don’t put it next to a red robin…

DRINK AND BE MERRY I’m a fan of these gorgeous gold ombre wine glasses from MiaFleur, £34 for four, and why not nab yourself this decorative gilt drinks stand, £195, while you’re at it. If the whole mulled wine thing is too old school for you, how about making yourself a nice big festive pot of tea in a celebratory Gold Star teapot (Rockett St George, £45).

lasgow is rightly famous for its humour, shipyards and bold Victorian architecture, built during its reign as ‘the second city of the Empire.’ But, as with any ambitious city, there’s been many a bump on the road, and Glasgow is also renowned as the home of the UK’s failed experiment with modernist architecture in the 1950s and 1960s – where families, cleared from the 19th century slums of the Gorbals and Govan, found themselves housed in vast tower block estates often far from the city centre. as anyone else’s enjoyment of the Cold Feet reboot been ruined by James Nesbitt’s eyebrows? As much as I attempted to catch up with the characters’ lives today, I’ve been constantly thrown off story by Nesbitt’s brows which looked like they had been drawn on with an extra thick, extra black jumbo marker. Not that the actor is the only culprit guilty of overdone brows. One quick look around any high street and you’re likely to see very pretty girls – and increasingly

104

boys – with brows that have been plucked, dyed, arched and reshaped to such an extent they’d look better placed on a cartoon character. I know that may sound a little harsh but then so are those eyebrows. It’s understandable why this overdone eyebrow epidemic has come about with the beautiful, bold brows of the likes of Lily Collins, Cara Delevingne and Sofia Vergara worthy of their own Instagram accounts but if Mother Nature didn’t decree your face suitable for bountiful brows, please,

IF YOU’RE NOT KEEN ON TACKLING YOUR BROWS YOURSELF, HOW ABOUT MICROBLADING?

What is it? The latest advance in eyebrow tattooing – and beauty bloggers are obsessing over it. Microblading is different from regular tattooing in that the colour pigment is implanted under the skin by a hand held micro blade, not a machine, to form superfine strokes and create a more natural look. How long does it last? It’s semipermanent so can last up to three years. Is it painful? Most therapists will apply a topical anaesthetic to numb the brows. How much does it cost? Approximately £250+ be wary of cut price microblade offers as it’s a highly skilled expertise. Where can I try it? There are an increasing number of practioners operating in Scotland but do your research as microblading’s semipermanent nature means you need full confidence in your therapist.

106

please resist the temptation to draw, tint or stencil them on. That’s not to say we can’t give your natural brow a helping hand, and it’s surprisingly easy to add a bit of oomph by working with their natural shape and adding more intensity with the right products. Thanks to the renewed focus on brow queens such as Delevingne, the industry has brushed up its act – with the resulting products better than ever. While there are gels, waxes, powders and creams available, I’m still a big fan of the humble brow pencil but forget the heavy, waxy wands of old as new formulations deliver a truly natural look, and there’s a full spectrum of shades out there. Personal favourites include Soap & Glory’s Archery 2-in-1 retractable pencil which comes in three shades and also boasts a spooly brush, £8, and Delilah’s Brow Line from Space NK, £20, which is great for creating super fine strokes. If filling with a pencil doesn’t appeal, another good option is Benefit’s Gimme Brow, £18.50, a fiber gel that coats the brow mascarastyle and volumises, tames and tints all in one. Results are impressive but, as with all brow products, it’s essential to get the colour right. True brow divas opt for two shades; one slightly darker than the other, to recreate a natural gradient of colour. That technique does take a lot of practice so best for brow filling newbies to look for a product one or two shades lighter than their natural brow colour. New formulations are heavily pigmented and choosing a lighter tone will help bulk out the brow, allowing a gradual build-up of intensity of colour whilst being forgiving on heavy handed strokes. Go darker and you’re in James Nesbitt territory and, trust me, that’s not a good place for any brow to be.

The science of ageing AESTHETIC MEDICINE OFFERS A RANGE OF OPTIONS TO REDEFINE THE PROCESS OF AGEING. DR NESTOR GIVES THE LOWDOWN.

C

ombining science and art: aesthetic medicine is the study of beauty and the understanding of how we age. We’re all programmed to identify the beauty in our surroundings and in turn, the beauty in youth. Restoring natural volume and contours, such as enhancing cheekbones, softening harsh lines and lifting sagged areas can maximise beauty potential by restoring the character of youthful features. Our skin loses hydration, collagen, elasticity and tone with the passing years and our fatty tissue (think of beautiful plump cushions giving structure and lift to our faces) starts to descend and lose volume, the result is sagging tissue and deepening folds. We also see many bone changes with age; the angle of our jaw progresses from 94 to 120 degrees, this makes our chin, and therefore our face, become shorter. By taking into account what the years bring, or rather take from us, we can use different treatments to slow down the process and ultimately redefine and take control of how we want to age. It’s not about looking 20 years younger but rather looking incredible for your age and softening the signs of ageing in a natural way. Treatments can be in the form of wrinkle relaxing injections, dermal fillers, Silhouette Soft Thread Lift, and skin health. Each have their strengths and can address a specific concern but always tailored to you. Dr Nestor

has spent most of his medical career studying the process of ageing and providing expert solutions to ageing concerns. Before embarking on your aesthetic journey; take a free, no obligation consultation to discuss what possible options might suit you. To find out more and explore the aesthetic treatment options available, call Dr Nestor’s Edinburgh clinic. Consultations are free of charge and treatments are tailored to your specific concerns. W

atching your weight doesn’t have to be doom and gloom. It’s all about making savvy choices and putting a few strategies in place, according to nutritionist and weight loss expert Lily Soutter. Here she shares her top tips to help you drop a clothes size without breaking a sweat.

SIMPLE FOOD SWAPS FOR A FLATTER STOMACH

Swap your latte for an Americano - Some lattes have as much as 200-290 calories. By only having a small splash of milk in your Americano you could save huge calories, whilst not sacrificing too much flavour. One coffee a day = 1,295 calories saved per week.

Swap your bread for red cabbage cups - Red cabbage cups are easy to transport and packed full of antioxidants. You also save at least 200 calories per sandwich. All you need to do is fill each large red cabbage leaf with your usual sandwich filling. Three sandwiches per week = 600 calories saved.

Swap your Caesar dressing for olive oil and lemon - Cheesy or creamy dressings can add 250 calories to your meal. By dressing your salads with a tablespoon of olive oil and a little lemon juice you cut these calories by half. Six tablespoons of dressing per week = 468 calories saved.

Swap rice for broccoli or cauliflower rice - Cauliflower rice can increase your veg intake and instantly eliminate huge calories. Cooked rice has 218 calories per cup; cauliflower rice has 25 calories per cup. It doesn’t have to be boring either, you can flavour cauliflower rice with a tasty combination of spices. Two meals per week = 386 calories saved.

Swap some avocado in guacamole for courgette Guacamole can still taste amazing without it’s calorie punch by blending in a few cooked slices of courgette. Two servings per week = 200 calories saved.

THREE PLACES THAT HAVE OUR ATTENTION

TUK TUK, GLASGOW Not many can claim to do ‘street food’ as well as Tuk Tuk. The new restaurant at 426 Sauchiehall Street opens on 10 November and is the company’s second venture after four successful years in Edinburgh’s Leven Street. Expect vibrant and authentic Indian street food with a dash of Bollywood. www.tuktukonline.com.

SIX DEGREES NORTH, EDINBURGH Taking over from Mother’s on 24 Howe Street, this independent brewery replaces gin with beer, offering an impressive 40 draught taps. The food is a tapas take on Belgian cuisine, designed to match and pair with the beers. www. sixdnorth.co.uk.

2

THE BEER KITCHEN, ST ANDREWS Innis & Gunn’s tried and tested Beer Kitchen formula is heading to St Andrews. The brewery to tap policy ensures ultra-fresh beers and the menu takes classic pub staples and sprinkles over a bit of panache. Go for the beer… stay for the chicken kievs. Expected to open mid-November on 80 North Street, St Andrews, KY16 9AH. www.thebeerkitchen.co.uk.

#i_online STREAMING UNEXPECTED ACTIVITY LIVE ONTO YOUR SMART PHONE, SMART CAMERAS CAN TAKE HOME SECURITY TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL. WE PUT THREE MARKET LEADERS TO THE TEST…

GADGET CORNER

BEST OVERALL CANARY, £129.99 Sporting a 1080p HD wide angle camera with excellent night vision; the Canary is easily controlled from the slick interface and at the time of going to press, the only of the three to work with Apple’s native HomeKit. Another unique feature of the three is the home health monitoring which can transmit live info and alerts about temperature, humidity and air quality.

BEST FOR CHILD MONITORING NETGEAR ARLO Q, £139.99 One of the biggest benefits of the Arlo Q is two way audio, meaning that as well as home security, it’s useful as a child or pet monitor. It offers a similar 1080p wide angle night vision HD camera which can be configured in the app to monitor specific zones so as to get more accurate results.

128

BEST FOR CLOUD FEATURES Y-CAM EVO, £129.99 While the other options don’t charge any subscription fees, they do offer extended options for an extra charge, Y-cam’s big plus is offering these extras, such as downloading clips and seven days of storage for free. The Y-cam was the quickest of the three to set up, requiring very little input. Stand out features include the ability to manually record; great for capturing family moments.

BIT AT THE BACK

The art of dinner conversation words Rebecca McCosh

78 per cent of Brits are giving the dining table a swerve to slob out with a TV dinner on average, five times a week. And when we do actually sit at the table, we’re wolfing down our food in just 10 minutes flat, then scarpering. The figures are based on a study into eating habits by Giovanni Rana, the fresh pasta maker, and it’s not good news. According to clinical psychologist Dr Nihara Krause, “Making time to incorporate a family meal together is a simple, enjoyable and effective way of growing emotional development and resilience.” So please, for the benefit of your emotional well being, avoid these top conversation killers this evening…

ARGUMENTS Politics, religion and money are the most divisive topics so play it safe and stick to embarrassing the kids and gossiping about the neighbours. Average dinner table bust-ups per family each year: 13. KIDS’ TANTRUMS It’s impossible to continue a conversation when the little one has turned purple with rage and is kicking, screaming and throwing his plate across the dining room because he wants Coco Pops on his spaghetti. Average number of meltdowns per family each year: 25. SPILLING FOOD AND DRINK Splashing red wine all over your new white shirt or spilling scalding hot soup on your partner’s crotch; neither of these actions are conducive to a conversation. Average clumsy moments per family each year: Drinks spillages: 82, food spillages: 114. Read the full article online at www.ionmagazine.co.uk/dinnerconversation.
