It’s Your Ipswich Life
Where did January go? Seems like yesterday I was packing up the Christmas tree and already we’re into February. I don’t know about you but this cool change in the last week has been fantastic, and boy did we need that rain! In this issue of Ipswich Life we talk to Jemma Rix, the star of over 1000 performances of the amazing musical ‘Wicked’ which is coming back to QPAC for another sell out season. Closer to home and we spoke to Tom Burlinson who is bringing his new show to the Civic Centre on Valentine’s Day. With a huge resurgence in the Swing genre of music, his Sinatra show has to be heard to be believed, and has become a full time job for the man we once knew as ‘The Man From Snowy River. We’ve got a fantastic Valentine’s Day feature full of ideas of ways to spoil your other half, so now’s the time to plan for the most romantic day of the year. Giveaways are always popular in Ipswich Life, and this issue is no exception, with something for everyone. Make sure you get in for the ‘Wyrmwood’ screening at Limelight where everyone is being encouraged to come in their best Zombie outfits. Should be a ton of fun! Plus we have social photos, Defence news, motoring, finance, puzzles and our special preview of what movies to see in 2015. Experts are predicting that this year is going to be the biggest EVER, and with 1 21/0 Chamber_ShopIpswich_IpswichLife_vendorads:Layout new Avengers, Mad Max, Jurassic Park and of course, Star Wars movies coming out, the hard part is going to be working out which one to see first. Ipswich Life is FREE thanks to our advertisers, so please let them know you saw it in Ipswich LIfe. Til next time....

WHAT’S HOT ON
STAGE
Tom Burlinson appears at the Civic Centre on February 14th. Tickets from www. ipswichciviccentre.com.au or at the ICC Customer Service centre in the Ipswich Mall.
Burlinson’s Magic of Sinatra Tom Burlinson’s new show ‘Simply Sinatra - The Music of The Man’, coming to the Civic Centre on Valentine’s Day promises iconic songs with great entertainment in a live show. Back in 1981, a young actor named Tom Burlinson was cast in a little movie called ‘The Man From Snowy River’. For those who remember the year of release, 1982, it was a movie that ran in some cinemas for more than a year. It made Burlinson a household name and led to roles around the world. Fast forward to 1991, and Tom surprises many by providing the voice of the young Frank Sinatra, in a mini-series about the life of one of the biggest names in entertainment of the 20th century. Since then, Tom has performed live on stage the works of Sinatra, and since the late 1990’s it has turned from a bit of fun into his full time career, with his new show ‘Simply Sinatra- The Music of The Man’ which is coming to the Civic Centre on Valentine’s Day as part of a national tour, and he says the show is in constant evolution. “Hopefully, I’m better at doing this now,” Tom said from his homebase before going into the studio to record an album of Sinatra classics. “I’m older now of course and more experienced, and the content hasn’t changed that much but I do a couple of songs that weren’t in earlier shows now mainly because now I have the arrangements. “For example there’s a couple of iconic songs, ‘It Was A Very Good Year’, plus ‘Strangers in the Night’. Those two songs are now in the show. Of
course there are some that you have to do, they are always the right choices, like ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’, ‘New York, New York’ and ‘Lady Is a Tramp’.” Tom loves playing regional areas, and is excited about bringing his show again to the Civic Centre. “I still love doing it, especially the travelling around, as we get such a positive response. Our demographic is largely older people, I meet them after the show, and sign autographs. It’s just overwhelmingly positive. They love the music, they love the songs, and I’m sharing a journey of their lives in many cases. “The oldest song is from the mid 1940s, but Frank was still performing in the 1990’s, so many people remember what they were doing when they hear a song. One thing I have noticed is that the audience is getting younger, and I put that down to the popularity of acts like Michael Buble and the resurgence in the Swing genre. Buble has covered many Frank Sinatra songs. What he’s done through his success is rekindle interest in this style of music, and that’s a great thing. “With early shows we stuck to capital cities, then with the last tour we reduced the size of the band and were able to tour more areas. When I’m in regional areas it’s great, as people appreciate the fact that you are there in their town, they are very welcoming, and they don’t have to make a huge effort to go see a show...we come to them.
“For smaller venues this show works very well. I travel with the band plus we pickup local musicians where we can, so we now have a good team of guys who can come and play with us whether it’s a 5, 10 or 16 piece big band. We really focus on the music, and I do talk about how the show came about, I still do the original songs that started it all, like ‘The Man In The Hat’.” Australia has many tribute acts doing the rounds constantly. In Ipswich alone we’ve seen Abba, Kiss, Angels, Powderfinger, Fleetwood Mac, Hoodoo Gurus and AC/DC tribute acts play to packed audiences. Does Tom have any idea as to why we love these acts so much? “I don’t know why we love these tribute acts so much, but I do think some of them are very good live. My intention every time is to try to do justice to that great legacy that Sinatra left behind. People tell me that they close their eyes and Sinatra is still alive to them. Sure, you can watch DVD’s or YouTube but the live experience is what people enjoy the most. I just hope the standard is very good with these tribute acts and that’s why people flock to them.” While Sinatra is his full time job now, Tom still gets comments from people about his role in Snowy River. Will we ever see an Aussie movie so popular again? Maybe not. “I don’t know if we will ever see that again, as it has been over 30 years. The impact that movie had at the time…it ran at Hoyts in Sydney for over a year, and was just taken to the hearts of all Australians. It was phenomenal. “I don’t know if there will be another product that will capture people’s imaginations like that did. These days a movie is on for 2 or 3 weeks and its gone. It had everything. The way it showed the landscape, the music, the adventure...even today I get strapping young men come up to me and say ‘you were my hero when I was a kid!’ That’s always nice to hear.”

Purchasers have been enticed to the growing convenience of Fernvale with the inclusion of many new retailers and services providers since the estate was established. Clinton Trezise, Associate Director for Colliers International Residential who is marketing the estate said “This is an important milestone, Honeywood has been able to provide affordable large level homesites suitable for a variety of purchasers. Not only do theses homesites give buyers the option for a large house, but also a large backyard suitable for trampolines, swing sets and all things that children love! The estate compliments the environment with tree lined streets, nature corridors and fully turfed verges. Recent improvement in sales has urged the developer of Honeywood to commence construction on the next stage that will comprise of only 28 homesites featuring rural outlooks and mountain views. Currently land is still priced from an affordable $139,000. Colliers International, with help from some of Queensland’s leading builders, have a number of house and land packages to suit all buyers starting from a low $295,000. Our affordable house and land packages are even better value for first home buyers said Mr Trezise. “With the combination of the First Home Owners Construction Grant and stamp duty concessions, first home buyers can secure a home from as little as $337 per week* (*Conditions Apply). I’m unaware of any other residential estates in South East Queensland that can offer a new 4 bedroom 2 bathroom 2 garage home on a 600m2 homesites for that kind of value.” Estate Manager, Jarod Herden has been selling homesites at Honeywood since the launch of the initial stage and has noticed changes first hand. “Since day one I have noticed that this
is a real community which is built on many generations. We are proud to be involved in such a quality estate attracting residents from all over Australia wanting a village lifestyle within an urban setting” said Mr Herden. “Honeywood residents benefit from having all the city conveniences while maintaining a relaxed village lifestyle. The local Fernvale Village shopping centre featuring a full line Woolworths is close to the entry of the estate and is a hive of activity any day of the week. Residents can also enjoy the local recreational activities such as the walking & riding trails along the Brisbane River that meanders around Fernvale. You can swim, kayak or even fish! You can also join the local sailing club at Wivenhoe Dam.” People can find out more about Honeywood at Fernvale by visiting the sales and information centre in the centre of Fernvale located along the Brisbane Valley Highway or contact the sales office on 07 5427 0511.

Jemma Rix gets ‘Wicked’ STAR CHAT CELEBRITY
Jemma Rix has performed on stage for six years (and counting) in the hit show ‘Wicked’, returning to the South East this month for another sellout season.
“
Wicked does evolve, and I really try to keep it fresh. It should be like the first time you see it every time, and it’s such a compliment when people tell me they felt like that. The show does change, with different directors, new actors, guest stars and such, so that keeps you in check.

Wicked opens at QPAC this month for a limited season
It’s fast becoming the show that Aussies just love to see again, and again, AND again. Wicked is coming back to QPAC next month for another sellout season. Chances are it won’t be the last time we see the show in the Sunshine State if the ticket sales for this season are anything to go by. Once again in the role of Elphaba is Jemma Rix. The girl from Avoca Beach in NSW near Gosford late last year racked up her 1000th performance in the role, and remains as excited by the role today as she did when she first walked on stage in 2008. Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the show is the winner of 90 major awards including a Grammy, three Tony Awards and seven Helpmann Awards, including ‘Best Musical’. Currently in its 12th year on Broadway, the show has grossed $3.4 billion worldwide and has been seen by over 42 million people. Jemma never planned to get into the arts, and admits that nobody is more surprised than her with the success she’s had. “I’ve sung and danced since I was three, as my dad has tons of videos of me doing that stuff, but it was never in my mind as a profession. I left school and did a beauty apprenticeship, dabbled in some amateur theatre plus I sung in a band doing top 40 stuff in Sydney,” Jemma said from Sydney where the show is now playing, before coming to Brisbane. “So it was always something I wanted to do but never thought possible. I needed money to live and it’s such a tough gig. I finished my apprenticeship and I thought ‘let’s give it a go’. It has been more of a surprise to me than anyone that this would be my life. Six years now I’ve been doing it. It has been relatively consistent and I’ve travelled the world through Wicked. I’m very lucky. My first gig was playing the Bride of Frankenstein at a theme park in Japan and I’ve been playing a witch for six years. Doesn’t say much for my looks does it?”
Jemma clocked up her 1000th performance in October last year, something that is rare these days for performers in big productions. “I didn’t do anything too special to be honest. My dresser and my makeup artists made a thing about it, which was really nice. It is a big deal, as this is such a hard role to play and I think I’m only one of three worldwide that had done over a thousand performances, and I’m really proud of that. “ With so many guest performers and six years of being in the one show, how does Jemma view the show as the lines remain the same, along with the songs. “I’ve loved working with everybody in the show. They bring something different to each production, but one stood out for me and that was Rob Guest. He was the original Wizard, and I loved working with him. That was my first show, and he was such a well known performer, he was always coming up to us and offering his experience, always making time for others. He had such a kind and sharing nature, and at that time we needed that.” The most popular song of the show by a mile is ‘Defying Gravity’, as anyone who has seen the show will agree. It’s a song that had a profound effect on Jemma. “I cried when I first heard ‘Defying Gravity’. I was so blown away by the orchestration, and how the song builds into such an amazing moment. I just connected with it, I guess that’s why it is so popular. Everyone can relate and understand what’s going on…its about being judged and drawing strength from that. I just think all those elements come together, and I just found it overwhelming.” Which brings us to the question that Jemma must get asked about all the time. What’s it like being green? “The make up hasn’t really evolved, they tend to lock the best methods in nice and early with shows this big. Most of the green skin is a body stocking, its not like I’m painting myself every day. It’s relaxing for me, I just sit there and a makeup artist does it all for me. My skin is so
sensitive from years of doing this, I have to use Sorbelene all the time, but I work through it! “It’s not easy living for months at a time in a city, its definitely hard being away from home, but I feel like I’m at the right age that its okay. I don’t have children yet, as if I did it would be so complicated and I’m lucky that my husband has the kind of job he can take time off regularly. “I was in Manilla for 10 weeks, and Korea for 5 months and he only came to see me once in that block, it was the saddest goodbye. He was there for a week and I had to let him go. Its not easy, it can be hard, but its not forever. Its part of my job and I just get on with it. Being in Australia is much easier as its just a quick plane ride to get anywhere, so we make it work.” So what does Jemma put down the popularity of the show that shows no signs of slowing down? “I think the friendship between the two girls is what people love. Elphaba is a normal person, just with green skin. That judgement that is passed on her, even from her father is quite harsh and sad. But she’s a good person, all the things she fights for are for good. Even Glinda as a character is so privileged, yet she’s from a place of innocence and there’s a journey in the story for her too. I guess that friendship, and the judgments are just so powerful. “It’s not easy singing these songs, when I first tried Defying Gravity I honestly thought my head would explode. My technique has got better over time, but its not easy. I guess that’s why I’ve stayed, because the it’s always making me better as a performer.”

Australia Day Awards list The work of people like Raceview resident Brian Hall in support of Ipswich civic groups and events has been recognised in the Australia Day Awards announced recently at the Ipswich Civic Centre. Mr Hall was named Citizen of the Year for his decades of dedicated service to organisations such as the National Servicemen’s Association, the Ipswich Ambulance Committee, the Ipswich Workers Club and Ipswich Labour Day. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said it was well deserved recognition for a man who has given so much time, passion and effort to making Ipswich a better place to live. “Brian’s contribution to life in this city has been tremendous,” Cr Pisasale said. “A commitment of nearly 20 years to the Local Ambulance Committee, including a service of 17 years as President, has meant a strong and active support base for local ambulance services. “Brian’s dedication to the local National Servicemen’s Association is peerless, serving with the organisation for over a decade in a variety of roles including Treasurer and President of the Brisbane West Branch. “The workers of Ipswich have been a major beneficiary of Brian’s tireless work as Secretary and President of the Ipswich Labour Day Committee from 1985-1999 and as the founding President of the Ipswich Workers’ Club from 1986 and served a term as manager of the club from 1993. Cr Pisasale also congratulated Doreen Coker on her recognition as Ipswich’s 2015 Senior Citizen of the Year. “For over 40 years Doreen has leant her considerable talents and precious time to a huge range of charities and people in need,” Cr Pisasale said. “Doreen has been a committed member of her church community since 1975 and worked tirelessly in the Sunday school she established there until 2013 and continues to visit ill parishioners. “Leichhardt has especially benefitted from Doreen’s efforts with her participation in the local Leichhardt Community Council and Neighbourhood Watch programs benefitting
everyone in the area. “For 40 years Doreen has assisted the Lauriston Blue Care working in the canteen, organising fetes, sewing bees and fundraisers and more recently, serving as member and treasurer of the committee “In the last 30 years Doreen has worked closely with the Blue Nursing Organisation on their annual collection and assisted in the local Life Line Charity Shop, and since 1985 Doreen has been an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels,” Cr Pisasale said. Public safety strategy in CBD reducing antisocial incidents An initiative to stop antisocial behavior in the Ipswich CBD is proving successful since the introduction of the scheme late last year. The Ipswich Central Public Safety Strategy was put in place following a spate of offences in the Ipswich Mall including the attack on Ipswich trader Bob Slater who chairs the CBD Traders Advisory Committee. Mayor Paul Pisasale has a clear message for potential troublemakers. “Don’t come into our Mall or CBD and cause problems, or there will be consequences,” Cr Pisasale said. “It’s important that the community can feel comfortable and able to go about their everyday business in peace. “We are pleased with the results achieved and will continue working together to ensure that any problems are handled swiftly. “The most important thing is partnerships. The Council isn’t the police. They do a fantastic job and they need the eyes and ears of the community. The people causing the issues are negligible but are causing a big noise. We are going to silence them. This is our Mall, this is our city and they aren’t going to win.” Councillor Andrew Antoniolli, who has his office located in the mall, said council joined forces with the police last month to implement this strategy in a high profile way. “Police have taken a zero tolerance approach to any offenders in the area,” he said. Cr Antoniolli said a significant positive behavioural change was now evident in the Ipswich Mall and traders had praised the efforts of Council and the police.
“Together we have undertaken 66 hours of joint patrols in this area between December 16 and January 12 resulting in 165 persons being spoken to in respect to behaviour and offences including breaches of local laws. “A total of 20 people have been issued infringement notices for smoking offences. “In addition police have utilised officers from the mounted police and public safety response team in patrols, which has resulted in significant arrests for drug offences and public nuisance offences.” Ipswich District Acting Superintendent Michelle Stenner said the police of Ipswich were committed to making the Ipswich CBD and Mall a safe place for members of the community to visit and work. “We have achieved some good results through increased high visibility patrols and assistance from specialist units,” Acting Superintendent Stenner said. “Our joint response is indicative of the strong partnership we have with the Ipswich City Council and we will continue to work together to ensure those persons intent on causing trouble in our CBD and Mall are quickly identified and dealt with.” Photo: L-R Constable Dale Rettke, Acting Inspector Gary Dixon, Mayor Pisasale, Acting Senior Sargeant Jacqueline Munn, Constable Linette Swales and Cr Andrew Antonelli show that the authorities are serious about safety in the Ipswich CBD.

USQ Ipswich - a hub for health & wellbeing courses Local students are now able to stay close to home to build a bright future, with a new range of health & wellbeing courses being offered at USQ’s new campus in Ipswich. Kayla Yarrow, Tara Ruthenberg and Stephanie Poulsen are excited to be part of the first intake of USQ students at the university’s new campus in Ipswich. Bachelor of Paramedicine and Bachelor of Nursing students are thrilled to have the opportunity to stay at home while they build their future careers studying at USQ Ipswich. New to USQ Ipswich, the Paramedicine degree complements USQ’s already solid reputation for preparing health professionals for career success. The program was has been designed by leading medical and paramedic staff who understand the real-world of pre-hospital emergency care. “Being a paramedic would be such a rewarding job. It’s on the front line and can be very spontaneous; not every job will be
the same and you are constantly thinking on your feet.” Miss Yarrow said. Excited by the prospect of studying her dream degree so close to home Miss Yarrow is patiently waiting for semester to start in February. “I’ve grown up here, and Ipswich is growing every year, it’s what I love about it, having everything we need close by,” said Miss Yarrow. In 2015 the educational opportunities in the Ipswich region are expanding as the University of Southern Queensland

grows with the community. As well as the new campus at Ipswich, USQ will open brand new facilities at Springfield for the start of teaching in March. Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Janet Verbyla said the university is committed to making university education available to everyone who wants it. “USQ was founded with a mission to ensure that people who want a higher education don’t have to leave their community to study, and we’ve never lost sight of that goal. We are proud to help students from all sorts of backgrounds get degrees, and our status as the number one university in Queensland for graduates in full-time work shows how successful we are in achieving this goal.” Professor Verbyla said USQ Ipswich will be a hub for Health and Wellbeing, with Midwifery on the cards to be added to the current offer of Paramedicine, Nursing and Tertiary Preparation studies. USQ Springfield has new degrees in Sport and Exercise Science, and Creative Arts in 2015, and more new programs will be added in the future to make the campus a hub for creativity, innovation and enterprise. Kayla Yarrow’s tip for anyone thinking about study is to “ask questions… attend as many information sessions as you can because I guarantee that USQ will answer your questions.” There’s still time to apply to start study in February with QTAC applications closing on 16 February and Direct to USQ applications closing on 26 February. TIME FOR THE
MOVIES MY TOP
FIVE
My Favourite Movies... EVER! We caught up with the new manager of BCC Cinemas Ipswich, Bek Barnes and she shared with us her favourite movies of all time. With the Avengers sequel, the new Star Wars movie and Arnie returning in the new Terminator movie, there are tons of other blockbusters on the way. Bek says that 2015 is going to be the biggest year EVER for movies according to industry experts. She also says the ones to watch out for in her opinion are Jurassic World, 50 Shades of Grey and Mad Max: Fury Road. What are your favourite movies of all time? Let us know and you could win a double movie pass! 1.Titanic It was one of the first movies I saw as kid, and can still watch again and again. Plus I fell in love with Leonardo *sigh* 2. Jurassic Park I love dinosaurs. Come on… who DOESN’T love dinosaurs? I’m a blockbuster girl. I love all three movies but the first has to be my favourite. OMG… the T-Rex attack. Movie making at its best! Can’t wait for the new instalment in June. 3. Saving Mr Banks I was extremely emotional watching it. I loved every part of it. I had no idea what to expect, but it’s one of those movies that takes you through a whole range of emotions. I laughed, I cried… you name it. 4. Avatar It was my first Christmas in the industry, and it took me 3 weeks to see it as it was just so busy. But it was worth the wait! I’ve seen it so many times since and I can’t wait for the sequels! 5. Harry Potter & The Philosophers Stone I’m such a Harry fan. The whole excitement of seeing the first movie… I’ve dressed up, been to midnight screenings, you name it. But that first one was a dream come true for fans. NEXT ISSUE: Email your Top 5 of ‘ Movies I can’t wait to see in 2015’ to darren@ strikepublications.com.au to win a double movie pass and get in the next issue!

A year of must-see blockbusters awaits According to most industry experts, 2015 is going to be the biggest year for box office receipts with several sequels that are going to ignite cinemas in record numbers. Just take a handful of releases this year, in the shape of a new Avengers movie, Mad Max: Fury Road, Jurassic World, Daniel Craig’s 4th James Bond outing, the seventh Fast & Furious movie, plus a little flick at the end with the words ‘Star Wars’ at the front and those alone will add up to box office gold. We love movies here at Ipswich Life, so we’ve gone through all the press releases and gossip to bring you a list of movies that you simple musn’t miss in 2015. So strap yourself in and grab your calendar, because it’s going to be a busy year, no matter what you’re into! Fifty Shades of Grey: Feb 12 Love them or loathe them, there’s no denying the fact that it was inevitable that 100 million — book and ebook sales were going to result in a movie of the Fifty Shades trilogy that became one of the fastest-selling book series of all time. Whether it will capture the Valentine’s Day market remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure, it will have everyone talking about it. Stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson.
KIDS MOVIES There’s a new Spongebob Squarepants 3D adventure at Easter, Despicable Me’s Minions get their own movie on June 18, with Pixar’s Inside Out released on the same day, Hugh Jackman in a new Peter Pan movie on September 10 titled simply Pan, plus tweens will be singing along with Pitch Perfect 2 on May 7. Plus don’t forget the Shaun The Sheep movie on March 26 and Dreamwork’s Home with Big Bang’s Jim Parsons as the voice of an alien taking over Earth.
Fast & Furious 7: April 2 The seventh film will be tinged with sadness as it farewells original star Paul Walker who tragically died in a car accident during filming. Vin Diesel, Kurt Russell and Jason Statham all star. Expect action a plenty.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron: April 23 The first Avengers movie was such a hit only Avatar and Titanic sit above it on the all-time list money makers. With all the cast back for the sequel it is sure to be top of the list for all superhero movie fans. The Blacklist’s James Spader is the voice of villain ‘Ultron’. All the cast return including Iron Man (above). Yay! For the fans, the countdown has already begun…

Finally, you can catch Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible 5. Oh, and ladies, he’s back. Magic Mike XXL opens on July 2. *insert funny comment here about men dancing in their undies...LOL* Mad Max — Fury Road: May 14 No sign of Mel Gibson as Tom Hardy takes over the reigns of what has been a long, long road to George Miller’s fourth Mad Max outing. Any questions of ‘will it be worth the wait’ are quickly flushed down the dunny with just one view of the trailer. It is simply A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. Charlize Theron also stars with the likes of Angus Sampson, Megan Gale and the original ‘Toecutter’ Hugh Keys-Byrne (probably as a new character… last time we saw him he was run over by a speeding truck!) Thanks to our friends over at Keen’s, we couldn’t resist sharing the recipe for this divine curry. Trust us… it’s amazing! Enjoy…
Curried Coconut and Rice Fish Soup Prep time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 35 minutes (Stove top) Serves: 4
Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
3 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tbsp KEEN’S curry 1 tbsp mustard seeds 1 stalk of fresh curry leaves, leaves picked 1 tsp cumin powder 2 tsp garam masala 1 onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tbsp ginger 1 long red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 4 cups fish stock ½ cup basmati rice 400g can coconut milk 300g white firm fish, cut into chunks 12 raw prawn tails ½ cup lemon juice 1 cup coriander chopped salt and ground pepper
Method: 1. Heat the oil in a saucepan over a medium heat, add the KEEN’S curry powder, mustard seeds, curry leaves,
cumin and garam masala. Cook stirring for 1-2 minutes until aromatic. 2. Add the onion, garlic, ginger and chilli; cook stirring for another 2-3 minutes until softened. 3. Pour in the stock and add the rice, bring to the boil and reduce heat to a simmer cook for 15 minutes. 4. Add the coconut milk and cook for a further 10 minutes. 5. Add the fish and prawns, and cook for 4-5 minutes or until the fish and prawns are cooked through. 6. Stir through lemon juice and coriander, season to taste with salt and pepper.
Bond 25 — Spectre: November 19 Daniel Craig’s (below) last outing as James Bond 007 resulted in the most successful Bond film of all time, and sits comfortably in the top ten of most popular movies ever made. Production on the 25th Bond film was postponed so that Skyfall’s director Sam Mendes could return to the Bond franchise, giving proof to the old saying ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’, plus with Oscar winner Cristoph Waltz (Django Unchained, Inglorious Basterds) as the villain, along with co-stars Monica Belluci and Ralph Fiennes replacing Judi Dench as ‘M’, big things are expected for the man whose name is Bond, James Bond.
The Dressmaker: October 1 Set in the 1950’s, The Dressmaker is a bittersweet comedy about a glamorous young woman who returns, after many years in Europe, to her home town in rural Australia in order to right some wrongs from her past. Stars Kate Winslet, Judy Davis, and Liam Hemsworth. Star Wars Episode VII — The Force Awakens: December 17 For a whole generation, this is the big one! Under the trusted hands of J.J.Abrams who resurrected the Star Trek franchise, the Force will return again in a whole new movie which sent the internet into meltdown when the teaser trailer came out late last year getting over 60 million views in 10 days. It is without doubt THE movie event of 2015 whether you love Star Wars or not, plus with directors already hired for Episodes VIII and IX, plus two spin off movies, these are good times for fans of ‘The Force’. OTHER NOTABLE MENTIONS Watch out for Marvel’s Ant-Man on July 16, Fox’s reboot of Fantastic Four on August 6, plus the Entourage movie on June 4, Chris Hemsworth in the Ron Howard epic In The Heart of the Sea on March 19. Check into the The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with added Richard Gere on February 26. Adam Sandler stars in Pixels as an 80’s arcade gamer recruited to save Earth when martians misinterpret a transmission of Space Invaders. Sounds plausible… Sci-fi fans will be happy to see Ridley Scott (Alien, Prometheus, Blade Runner) back in space with Matt Damon stranded on Mars in The Martian. Remakes of Point Break on August 20 and

Cinderella with Cate Blanchett on March 26 will reach a new generation of filmgoers. THE SLEEPER HITS: Three movies are being touted as the ‘sleeper’ hits of 2015… the ones with little fanfare but gets people talking. Trash is out on March 26 and is about three Brazilian kids who find a dangerous treasure at the dump they call home. It’s being called the next Slumdog Millionaire and with the writer of Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Bridget Jones Diary (Richard Curtis) and the director of Billy Elliot (Stephen Daldry) at the helm, it should be a doozy. The Theory of Everything which is out now, is the heartwarming and true story of Stephen and Jane Hawking. The Oscar buzz is all over this one with 5 nominations inc Best Actor. Finally, its being called 2015’s Red Dog, with the release of Aussie family movie Oddball, which stars one of Australia’s best actors, Shane Jacobson (below) aka ‘Kenny’ in the true story of a chicken farmer and his dog that saved a colony of penguins. In fact, all the team who made ‘Kenny’ are behind this one. Should be a ripper Aussie yarn with heart.
Selma (M)
In selected cinemas from February 12th ‘Selma’ is the story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic struggle to secure voting rights for African-Americans — a dangerous and terrifying campaign that culminated in the epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama that galvanized American public opinion and persuaded President Johnson to introduce the Voting Rights Act in 1965. Starring Tim Roth, Tom Wilkinson, Oprah Winfrey and David Oyelow as Dr. Martin Luther King, Selma was nominated for 4 Golden Globe Awards and has also been nominated for Best Picture at the 2015 Academy Awards.

The introduction of Australia’s F-35A Lightning II aircraft into RAAF service moved a step closer, with the first Australian pilot beginning training on the F-35 in the US. Squadron Leader Andrew Jackson will commence training for his first F-35A flight tomorrow at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, United States. “The F-35A will be Australia’s first fifthgeneration aircraft and will provide the RAAF with a leading air combat capability. I’m excited to be given the opportunity to take a leading role in its introduction,” SQNLDR Jackson said. SQNLDR Jackson is undergoing an intensive training program before he takes his first flight in the coming months, saying “The fifth generation F-35A capabilities represent a quantum shift over legacy fighters, and I am looking forward to the training challenge it will present. “This aircraft will give fighter pilots a level of situational awareness that far exceeds legacy platforms. Experiencing this level of capability first hand is something every pilot dreams of,” he said. SQNLDR Jackson will have an important future role as an Instructor Pilot for Australian and international F-35A pilots, and was selected for his operational flying skills, extensive experience and leadership. “It will be a great honour to work and train alongside the United States and other international Air Force pilots,” SQNLDR Jackson said. The second Australian F-35A pilot, SQNLDR David Bell, will begin his training in mid-2015. SQNLDR Bell is a qualified Test Pilot. The F-35 aims to meet
Australia’s future air combat and strike needs, providing a force-multiplier effect in terms of situational awareness and combat effectiveness. The F-35A’s combination of stealth, advanced sensors, networking and data fusion capabilities, when integrated with other defence systems, will enable the RAAF to maintain an air combat edge. The first F-35A aircraft will arrive in Australia at the end of 2018 with the first operational squadron to be established by 2020. The F-35A will replace the aging F/A18A/B Hornets at RAAF Bases Williamtown near Newcastle and Tindal in the Northern Territory. Importantly, the F-35 is regarded by Defence chiefs as pivotal to the Air Force as it transforms into a true networked force. With its stealth and advanced sensor suite the F-35 will operate forward of other combat and support aircraft, directing the mission tactically. The combination of F-35 and F/A-18F, supported by E-7A Wedgetail AEW&C and KC-30A tanker transports will be Australia’s foremost air power assets. Defence chief reaffirms commitment to Afghanistan
Former Defence Force chief now Sir Angus Houston Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston (retired) has been awarded Australia’s highest honour as a Knight of the Order of Australia, recognising his 40 years of Defence Force service, followed by time as a government ‘trouble shooter’ – notably, leading the investigations into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 and the shooting down of MH17 over the Ukraine. Sir Angus trained initially as an Air Force pilot and flew Iroqouis helicopters with No 9 Squadron based at RAAF Amberley, a squadron that served with distinction during the Vietnam War. As Wing Commander Houston he commanded 9 Squadron in the late 1980s when the squadron transitioned from the UH-1H Iroqouis to the S70A Blackhawk. The squadron was disbanded in February 1989, with the Blackhawk battlefield helicopters passing to the Australian Army. Announcing the knighthood, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said, “Throughout his life, Sir Angus has put Australia first.” Known universally for his frank and honest recounting of events surrrounding the ‘Children Overboard’ controversy in 2001, the then Acting Chief of the Defence Force informed the Defence Minister of the day, Peter Reith that contrary to the record there were no children thrown overboard. At a subsequent Senate hearing he
showed courage in reaffirming that children were onboard the naval vessel, not in the water. Sir Angus became Chief of Air Force in 2001 and Chief of the Defence Force in 2005. He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2003 and made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2008. Since retiring from the Australian Defence Force in 2011, he took on roles as Chairman of the Anzac Centenary Advisory Board, Chairman of Airservices Australia and Chairman of the Council for the Order of Australia. ‘Successive governments have relied on Sir Angus’ wisdom, judgment and character,’ Mr Abbott said.
Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin has reaffirmed Australia’s ongoing commitment to Afghanistan at a meeting with NATO military chiefs in Brussels recently, which focused on the international community’s ongoing assistance in Afghanistan. With its commitments of support personnel along with mentors and advisors in-country, Australia remains one of the largest non-NATO contributors to the operation, codenamed ‘HIGHROAD’. “While there is significant global attention on current operations in Iraq, our mission in Afghanistan has changed, not ended,” he said. “Australia and our international partners have not forgotten the people of Afghanistan. The Afghan National Security Force is a confident and capable force, which demonstrated its ability to maintain Afghanistan’s security during the historic 2014 Presidential election. Our job is to keep working with them to continue to build and maintain a sustainable security force for the future.” Around 400 Australian Defence Force personnel are currently in Afghanistan. ADF trainers and mentors are providing advice to further develop the ANSF’s future leadership while other ADF personnel are working with the Afghan National Army
Officer Academy in Kabul leading the 205th Corps Coalition Advisory Team in Kandahar. There are also a small number of Special Forces personnel working in the Headquarters General Command of Police Special Units in Kabul. Additional personnel operating in force protection, medical and intelligence roles as well as embedded personnel in headquarters mean Afghanistan. “Despite the end of combat operations, ADF personnel are still exposed to danger in this ongoing mission to support our Afghan partners as they build their capacity and capability for Afghanistan’s long term security,” the CDF said.” Photo: LAC Greg Polak is a Royal Australian Air Force Airfield Defence Guard deployed to Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan. * Christmas is coming early this year. Well, not Christmas exactly — one of the films that had been planned to arrive on Boxing Day has been brought forward by six months as Mission Impossible 5 will hit screens across the nation. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter — Tom Cruise and the team will be going about their impossible missions a little earlier this year, partly thanks to Christopher McQuarrie and his filmmaking cohorts being able to deliver the film in good time. Another reason for the change is to move the film * Sam Frost, 25-year-old contestant of last seasons ‘The Bachelor’ has been recently taunting followers on social media that there’s a new “dude” on the scene. All has been revealed and it seems, Sam is the latest woman to join the Sydney Swans WAG club along Jesinta Campbell. Frost has confirmed she’s dating AFL Swans player Dane Rampe, 24. It was just last year that Sam won the series ‘The Bachelor’ Australia and was proposed to in the final episode by Blake Garvey, only to be dumped two weeks later for another contestant Louise Pillidge. Good Enough for a Sheep Station
by David Cox Completing the trilogy that began with The Road to Goonong and continued with The Fair Dinkum War, David Cox explores his relationship with his father and his life as a stockman on a sheep station. His warm observations in words and pictures reveal a resilient quintessential Australian spirit. As a boy, David Cox lived in the dusty outback on a sheep station. His lessons came in a brown envelope from the Correspondence School, but out of doors his father was his teacher. David learned the stockman’s skills of riding horses and mustering sheep and cattle, and when they were out riding his father would tell stories about old times. Sometimes they would repair stockyards or fences, and when the job was done his father would step back and say, ‘Well, it’s good enough for a sheep station.’ A great story book for younger readers (Allen & Unwin)

away from massive competition such as Mission executive producer J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens (set for December 18) and the even more direct challenge of the latest Bond film, Spectre. So M:I-5 is now a summer release, which means Paramount’s marketing team will have to scramble that little bit quicker to get teasers, trailers and various other promotional items ready to make sure the film-going world at large knows that Ethan Hunt and the gang are making an early return. * A sequel to late Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s best-selling Millenium crime trilogy will go on sale in at least 35 countries from August, the book’s publishers have announced. “That Which Does Not kill” was completed in November by David Lagercrantz, known for co-authoring Swedish football star Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s autobiography. He stands in for Larsson, who died of a heart attack in 2004 aged 50. The book will continue the story of the troubled but resourceful heroine Lisbeth Salander first made famous in Larsson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. But the author remained tight-lipped about the meaning of the title or what direction the action-packed political thriller — 500 pages long in Swedish — will take. “What I wanted to make use of in the book was the vast mythology that Stieg Larsson left behind, the world he created,” Lagercrantz said. At the time of his death Stieg Larsson reportedly had plans to write at least another seven novels. Nordstedts said the first three books in the Lisbeth Salander series have sold in the region of 80 million copies worldwide since the first book, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” went on sale in 2005.
* It’s the role which launched the international career of Hugh Jackman — now promising NIDA graduate Joel Jackson is set to take up the hallowed maracas of Australian entertaining legend Peter Allen. Scoring the hotly-contested lead in Channel 7’s next blockbuster TV biopic, Jackson will follow his breakthrough performance as war correspondent Charles Bean in Foxtel’s upcoming drama, Deadline Gallipoli by playing the late, great song-and-dance man whose colourful life was immortalised by Jackman in the Broadway stage sensation, The Boy From Oz. Jackson will be supported in Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door by an A-list cast including Rebecca Gibney (who will play Allen’s mother, Marion Woolnough) and Sigrid Thornton as Judy Garland, who managed Allen when he was 20.

One of their renowned series of wines falls under the Two in the Bush wine label, proudly named after one of the many gold mines scattered throughout the region. ‘Two in the Bush’ Semillon Sauvignon Blanc has bright and zesty lemon characteristics from the Semillon, which are enhanced and made more complex by the intense tropical aromas and flavours of the Sauvignon Blanc. Crisp, fresh and full flavoured, this wine is best enjoyed young. Next is Two in the Bush Merlot Cabernet which has lifted aromas include ripe red fruits, fleshy plums and subtle oak. The rich, vibrant palate has hints of blackcurrant, nutmeg, briar and cedar. The intense dark berry flavours of the Merlot balance the length and structure of the Cabernet. Finally, Two in the Bus’ Shiraz is a vibrant, aromatic cool climate Shiraz. Loaded with berry fruit characters and elegance this Shiraz drinks extremely well now and will also age well for a number of years. I am proud to say that these three magnificent examples of Bird in Hand wine are the newest additions to the Char’d Steakhouse premiere wine list I would encourage you to try them.

MATTERS The China Syndrome BY MARK BOURIS
We’re used to reading about national measures that are so large we don’t feel involved in them: inflation, the cash rate, unemployment, economic growth. They can feel too big to worry about. But the recent announcement that will be relevant to most Australians. The ChinaAustralia Free Trade Agreement will make 93 per cent of Australian export goods into China tariff-free in four years. It will have a noticeable impact on the direction of our economy, the growth areas for jobs and the inflow of investment capital. For Australia it means more exports to the world’s most populace country — a country which this year, for the first time, outpaced the United States in GDP. The ChAFTA removes tariffs up to 20 per cent on beef, seafood, sheep meat, dairy, hides and skins, processed foods, wine, live animal exports, barley and wool. Our horticulture exports will see tariffs removed up to 30 per cent. This is significant for our agriculture. When any product or commodity has 20 or 30 per cent removed from its price, the demand for it increases, especially important when you consider that of the world’s increased demand for agricultural output to 2050, China will account for 43 per cent of it. The tariffs will be dropped on our coal exports and many regulatory hurdles will be dropped so Australian services firms — financial services, law, accounting, engineering, architectural and health services — will have access to China. How will this help Australians? The biggest positive for us is going to be in economic growth. Credit Suisse forecasts that when the ChAFTA comes into effect, we can expect it to add between 0.25 and 0.5 per cent to our GDP, annually.

Considering our current economic growth is running at 3.1 per cent, the forecast effect of ChAFTA is actually enormous. And where will we feel it? More economic activity, higher growth, a higher standard of living and strong employment. China will have easier access to making large-scale investments in Australia, and Sydney will become the latest Yuan Hub — a place where local currency can be converted directly to the Chinese currency without having to first buy US dollars. Companies trading with China will save significantly on transaction costs. Perhaps most important is ChAFTA’s emphasis on our non-mining sectors: China has spent two decades building-out its infrastructure, which means buying coal, iron ore, copper ore and bauxite. Now it turns to the things that a middle class needs: medical centres, seafood, architects, old folks homes, beef, diary products, lawyers, insurance companies and the quality education that is already a large export to China. And what is the food and services opportunity presented by the Chinese expansion? China’s GDP per capita is currently $9,100 compared to Australia’s $37,400. China’s middle classes are going to expand in earning and consumption, and they’ll look to Australia to meet many needs. The ChAFTA will provide many opportunities for Australians willing to align with the growth industries and make their education and employment choices accordingly. Good luck. Facelift for new BMW 1 Series An extensively modified front and rear-end design, a sophisticated premium ambience when you step inside and fresh reserves of power under the bonnet are all part of the even more expressive, sporting and efficiency-focused skillset of the new BMW 1 Series model range Almost two million units of the BMW 1 Series have been sold worldwide over the last ten years, and this latest edition is poised to set another new benchmark in the premium compact segment. The new 3-door and 5-door BMW 1 Series models come with a comprehensively revised engine line-up and additional measures designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, allowing them to lead the way once again in the introduction of new BMW Efficient Dynamics technology. The selection of engines available for the new BMW 1 Series model range has been enhanced by the addition of latest-generation petrol and diesel units with three and four cylinders. The torquey and high-revving engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology team up with rear-wheel drive — still a unique selling point in the compact segment — to deliver a suitably intense driving experience. Modified exterior and interior design includes familiar BMW styling cues underlining sports performance and premium characteristics. Carefully considered updates to the exterior design of the new BMW 1 Series shine the spotlight on its sporting elegance
and high-end presence. A newly designed BMW kidney grille and larger air intakes help to emphasise the car’s dynamic potential in familiar BMW style. Headlights with a significantly flatter geometry play a similar role. They come with LED daytime driving lights as standard and can now be specified in full-LED specification as an option. The rear lights have also been completely remodelled. They now display the “L” shape characteristic of BMW models and reveal LED-powered lights. Automatic air conditioning, BMW Radio Professional and BMW iDrive fitted as standard; new equipment variants.
