Ipswich is moving up! The announcement of a new $40 million dollar project in the Top of Town, right opposite Aspire, is a step in the right direction for the Ipswich CBD. Say what you like about high rises, but for my money, bringing residential apartments into the area can only benefit business and retail in the CBD. In this issue we have everything about the project, plus everything you need to start getting ready for Christmas. Christmas? Already? Seems like yesterday I was stocking on Cadbury Creme Eggs over Easter to last me the whole year! Umm....I hope my coaches don’t read this or I’m in big trouble. Where was I? Oh yes, Christmas. Before you know it Christmas will be over and I’ll be ranting again about why Hot Cross Buns are in supermarkets on January 2nd. Hope you enjoy this issue of Ipswich Life, our second last for the year. It’s packed with great reading, including all the news on the Civic Centre’s plans for 2015, and a whopping six pages of great gift ideas for Christmas from our advertisers, who thanks to them, are helping keep Ipswich Life FREE for you, so please show them your support. Till next time! darren@strikepublications.com.au

Taking the first swing Students from Special Schools in Goodna and Ipswich West have taken part in the inaugural, team-based Golf Challenge. The students have been involved in the First Swing In-school Program for eight weeks, a program designed to get kids of all ages learning the basics of golf, using modified equipment in a fun, active and inclusive way, in their school grounds. The nine-hole competition gives students a chance to practise what they learned at school on a real golf course. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale has shown his support for the event by sponsoring the students to participate. “I’m really happy to throw my support behind this event,” Cr Pisasale said. “Sport is such an important part of having a healthy lifestyle and it’s fantastic that our Ipswich community encourages all kids to get out, get active and have fun.” Goodna Special School PE teacher Paul Griffiths believes the golf day has the potential to be an ongoing event, with the continued support of First Swing. “The interest in this golf day has been excellent and it is a great way to finish the school year on a positive and fun note,” Mr Griffiths said. “First Swing has been one of the most indemand programs in Brisbane because of their enthusiastic coaching style and their outstanding modified sessions.” Director, Jay Simpson, a PGA professional, believes that golf should be accessible to all members of the community. Last week, Ipswich woke to a front page story about skyrocketing unemployment in our community. The figures are stark and unemployment suburb by suburb are; Leichhardt and One Mile 17.6 %, Bundamba 13.9 %, North Ipswich 13.6%, Riverview 23%. These numbers underscore that the Queensland LNP State Government has been particularly disastrous for our community. Before the 2012 Queensland election, Campbell Newman promised to reduce the State’s unemployment rate to 4 per cent over six years. At the time he set this target the Queensland unemployment rate was 5.5% and in Ipswich, it was 4.8 per cent. Before the 2012 State election, Newman told public servants they had nothing to fear from the LNP. We now know that he’s slashed more than 20,000 public service jobs, 3,000 of them from Ipswich. He slashed frontline services and employment programs like ‘Skilling Queenslanders for Work’, a $53 million program that Deloitte Access Economics’ independent analysis states would have generated $1.2 billion in revenue for Queensland by 2020. This ripped $4.5 million in employment support from the Ipswich Community and made it far harder for people to find work. And now the job seekers in my community face the onslaught of the Prime Minister’s budget of broken promises. If you’re a jobseeker under 30, Tony Abbott wants you to wait 6 months for Newstart. Overall, the unemployment rate in Ipswich now sits at 9.29 per cent. Many families in our community face a difficult and uncertain Christmas. If you are one of those families or if you have any Federal Government matters you’d like to discuss, please call my office on 3201 5300. Kind regards, Shayne Neumann, MP

Red Kangaroos and Bilbies join Ipswich Nature Centre Two new red kangaroos and a pair of twin bilbies have joined the Ipswich Nature Centre’s collection of animals. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the two red kangaroos join our very own newborn bilby twins Holly and Claus, for their public debut. “Breeding bilbies in captivity is quite rare and very difficult, so these twins are a real feat for the Ipswich Nature Centre,” Mayor Pisasale said. “Holly and Claus have only recently emerged from their very proud mum’s pouch and joined the centre’s public display. “This is a terrific outcome for the city but also for the bilby population as a whole,” Mayor Pisasale said. Bilbies were common in many different habitats throughout Australia until European settlement. Predation by European red foxes and feral cats has meant that bilby populations now only occur in the isolated arid and semi-arid areas of Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. “Captivity breeding is at the heart of efforts to save the bilby and these two little ones will grow up to produce many more thanks to their inclusion in the National Breeding Programme,” Mayor Pisasale said. “As is the tradition in Ipswich, I was delighted to present the twins with Born in Ipswich Certificates to commemorate this happy occasion. “I’m not sure if their parents will hang the certificates in their burrow, but they know how proud of them we are,” Mayor Pisasale said. Callum writes, “I’d eat that!” Thrust into the limelight on a reality TV show, only to finish runner up in one of the most-watched shows of all time in Australia, Callum Hann had lots of options open to him. Four years have past since that finale that resulted in Adam Liaw becoming a household name, and Callum has kept very busy. His second cookbook is full of recipes that anyone, yes, ANYONE can follow to cook great meals. His philosophy is simple: food should be simple, seasonal and fresh.Callum has been running a cooking school, worked with Adelaide Produce Market, Wesley Mission, and even Jamie Oliver’s Home Cooking Skills program. “I’ve been really lucky, I’ve had some awesome opportunities for work and on a personal level,” Callum told Ipswich Life from his Adelaide home. “I think when you eat good food it can’t help but rub off onto your own kitchen. Whether that’s going to a nice restaurant or trying someone else’s food, or even going to mums for a lasagne…it translates into your own cooking. “After the show ended it was a little bit crazy with lots of erratic commitments but I remember distinctly talking to my girlfriend before I started the show, as we were talking it though, and she said ‘what did I want to get out of the show?’ “I said I’d love to teach people to cook and write my own cookbooks. Now here I am running a cooking school in Adelaide and I’m really feeling like I’ve been so fortunate as to what doors the show has opened so I just want to keep making the most of it.” When the final result left Callum as runner-up, he was gobsmacked when he was offered a stint to work in the kitchens George Calombaris at one of his Melbourne restaurants. Now with Callum’s second cookbook “I’d Eat That”, he’s proving that cooking is accessible to anyone, and the book is chockers with recipes that will never appear too hard for a novice, or a professional. “There may not be a huge theme to the book, but in terms of it being approachable, doing simple recipes was always the goal. The problem with some cooking shows is that it gets people excited, but often some things are daunting and that brings pressure.
THE REGION’S LARGEST RANGE & BEST PRICES
“There’s nothing worse than looking at a dish or a recipe and wondering ‘where do I get that stuff’ or ‘how do I do that’. Often they end up abandoning the recipe, so it was my goal to make everything achievable. “A lot of the recipes I had from running the cooking school. If you think of an idea it doesn’t take too much to test it, and refine it. Things that are hard are like stuff in the oven, some of those can be a bit tricky…it’s a lot longer to remake them and start again if you get it wrong, and can be hard to refine.” Does Callum think that cookbooks are original these days? “I think with food there isn’t a lot of it that is completely original unless you are at the top of tree. Not everyone has 3 Michelin stars, and I find that most recipes are tweaks on flavours or recipes that have been done before. “In a way if someone else that likes your food is making it, then sharing it with friends then that’s a good thing. At the end of the day I want people to cook and share my recipes. “I love Jamie Oliver’s work, the way he tries to encourage people to cook, his philosophy is really good. I did some work with him with Jamie’s Cooking Skills working with kids in school. It was just simple things, and teaching them life skills for cooking at home. “People ask me how we get kids to eat things; like, ‘my son won’t eat mushrooms’. If the child has involvement, picking herbs from the garden or peeling the veges, anything giving them involvement means they will eat it.” With so many foods available to us these days, are we losing what ‘Aussie Food’ means? “What’s great about our country is that it is a mish-mash of so many cultures across the nation. My hometown has a huge Italian influence, and having that cultural influence I think is exciting. This cookbook reflects that, in that they are simple recipes that anyone can add to their repertoire and it represents food from all over the world.” ‘I’d Eat That’ is out now at all good bookstores.

FIVE Best ads ever When we spoke to the marketing guru from ‘Recipe To Riches’ and Network TEN boss Rusell Howcroft, we couldn’t resist asking a man who has spent his whole life in advertising what his favourite Aussie TV ads were of all time. His answers were very interesting to say the least and you might remember some. Check out the ads on You Tube and see what you think. Do you agree? 1. OTC — ‘Memories’ They really got the emotion right in that ad. It’s not what you say, but how you say it. There are various methods on how, but when you get the emotion part right, it works extremely well. 2. AFL — ‘I’d like to see that’ Brilliantly written and perfect execution. It was a great campaign having some of the world’s most famous sports people talking about AFL. 3. Carlton Draft — ‘Big ad’ It’s funny. Simple as that. In fact it’s ‘Crazy Funny’ which would be a better way to describe it actually. Very clever. 4. Twisties That phrase ‘Life’s pretty straight without Twisties’ is a perfect line. When you boil that down, saying that life is straight without something is clearly crazy, and yet it makes perfect sense in the world of advertising. Which is why I love it! 5. Holeproof Computer Socks Terriffc ad. They had Isaac Newton rethinking the theory of gravity becuase he found these socks that pushed ‘up’. Very clever concept. Arts Manager, Suzannah Conway, said that this year had proven that Ipswich audiences are clear about what they want to see in our city, which has resulted in several sold out performances, plus an increase in ticket sales of over 30% from the previous year. “The highlights for me personally were the major state arts companies’ performances from the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Opera Queensland and Expressions Dance Company. These were themed to the programs, with Italian, French, Spanish and German nights offering pre-show entertainment from the region, themed dinners and wines and pre-show talks. “A genuine highlight was the sold-out performance of Puccini’s ‘La Boheme’ with many patrons visiting the Civic Centre and seeing a live opera for the first time.” “We’re making a special effort to handpick quality artists and shows for both the mainstream Civic Centre shows as well as for Ipswich’s hottest venue, Studio 188. Word is out, so we now get many approaches from artists all over the country wanting to come to Ipswich!”

BUSINESS Trivia game pays dividends Testing his home loan savviness paid off big for Forest Lake man Aurelien Deliege who took home the lucky winnings of Yellow Brick Road’s Home Loan Trivia Show. The game was a fun online educational portion of Yellow Brick Road’s newest national advertising campaign, highlighting the Yellow Brick Road’s lowest interest rate to date. Aurelien said he saw the trivia game being advertised on TV whilst at work. “I went on the website to find out a little more about the company as we will look at purchasing a home in the near future and decided to enter the trivia game,” Aurelien said. “I’ve never won anything like this before and it’s come at a perfect time. To say I was surprised would be an understatement! I’m recently engaged with a baby on the way and the winnings will go towards our wedding and getting ready for the baby.”
Aurelien was presented the prize money at his neighbourhood Yellow Brick Road Centenary Suburbs branch. Something to smile about Have you ever considered improving your smile with a Tooth Whitening application? There are many ‘whitening’ products in supermarkets and offered on TV, but only a dentist has the system for each patient, and will get results in less than six weeks. Teeth appear yellow due to general ageing, smoking and dietary factors, which can reduce the white appearance of your teeth. Tooth whitening is a bleaching process that lightens discolourations of enamel and dentine. The system uses a gel solution in a custom-fitted tray, taken from a mould of your own teeth. Bleaching systems available over the counter are ineffective, have an unpleasant taste and may even damage teeth. None of these products have custom made trays which allow much faster bleaching and safer than over-the-counter alternatives.
Bleaching usually takes 4-6 weeks. Whitening happens gradually, you simply stop when you are happy with the result. You simply ‘touch up’ by re-applying the whitening gel as required. This varies with the individual, but usually people can go for years without retreatment. Without periodic touchups, the teeth will restain over time. You can buy ‘Touch up’ kits from Limestone Dental Group, they are quite inexpensive. Vital bleaching is simple, easy to do and very effective. Patients are surprised how cheap tooth whitening is, and there may be a health fund rebate. For more information, and to see how you can improve your smile, contact Limestone Dental Group on 3281 1466.

Over the past three years, the store in South Street has forged a reputation, which is getting loyalty from customers, and staff as well. Owner/Manager David Holdorf thinks it is because people still love to deal with a family business. “I guess in a few ways we are modelling ourselves on what Tom and the Edwards family did for many years with R.T.Edwards, as the loyalty you get from people in this town is fantastic,” David said. “It took us a long time to get the message across that we were not part of R.T.Edwards, but now we are getting so many customers who are coming here on word of mouth.” David is constantly on the lookout for new and exciting products, and attends several ‘fact finding’ trips overseas to look at manufacturers facilities, and what trends are happening in the industry. “As part of Furniture Court, Beds R Us and La-Z-Boy we can pick and choose products in demand. What sells in Ipswich may be different to Airlie Beach, so I have that flexibility. We can cater for everyone. “I go to two major shows a year, in China and Malaysia. By meeting with suppliers I can cut out the middle man and buy stock
direct. It saves me money, which I then pass on to customers. We can price match the big retailers, and get any style of furniture so there’s don’t need to drive out of town.” David has mostly the same staff who were there on day one, something rare these days. “We have low turnover of staff. I think being a family business has a lot to do with that. “My philosophy is ‘You’re a person, not a number’. Of course I monitor sales but it’s not everything. “We work in together. If there is cleaning to be done, or a bed to be put together, we all muck in, and that creates a great working environment. Together we work as a team. “I’ve been working at this store for three years now and I see Ipswich as a big country town. We don’t have that stress or hustle and bustle of a big city. People are moving to Ipswich every day to escape that. “We still believe in the handshake deal. We are definitely seeing that kind of loyalty coming back in Ipswich. It comes back to the way my mum and dad ran their business. They would go out for dinner and half the town would say hello to them! That’s a good thing to be recognised. “Business in Ipswich can only go one way, and that’s up. I know in five to ten years the CBD will take off. We are a destination store and having free parking is a big plus. “I think Harvey Norman going to Booval in 2016 will be good. Competition is good, it keeps you on your toes, plus in the long run it will keep people’s money in Ipswich!”

Key to the City for Police The Queensland Police Service received the Key to the City recently in recognition of the valuable contribution made to Ipswich during 150 years of policing. A march from D’arcy Doyle Place, and past the Ipswich Police Station had over 50 police officers along with former officers led by District Superintendent Mark Kelly where they were welcomed by Mayor Pisasale, Minister for Police Jack Dempsey and Police Commissioner Ian Stewart, fresh from his hard work on the G20 event that captured the world’s attention recently. Commissioner Stewart spoke about our city’s heritage, when he mentioned the Harrisville police station back in 1863 which opened 151 years ago, one year before the formation of the Queensland Police Service. Ipswich was already a thriving town when the Colony of Queensland was established in 1859. The fledgling colony created its own police service in 1864. Mayor Paul Pisasale and councillors of Ipswich actively supported the good work of QPS and said all officers deserved strong backing from the community. “The city has been with the men and women of Queensland Police since the beginning. In that time we have seen our share of tragedies and triumphs. The good citizens of Ipswich have recognised the value of dedicated officers throughout the 150 years in many ways. “One of the most visible is the community funded James Sangster memorial in North Ipswich which was dedicated on May 7, 1898. This memorial pays tribute
to Constable Sangster who lost his life attempting to saves lives during the devastating 1893 flood. “It is also the site each year for the Police Remembrance Day service.” Cr Pisasale said ties between QPS and city had been further strengthened since council established the Safe City CCTV public safety surveillance program in 1994. “Safe City has proved its worth to the community and policing with a significant reduction in crime. It has been praised by current and former officers and commissioners. We will maintain our commitment to expanding and improving coverage of cameras as they are needed. “To all police who have served and are current serving in Ipswich we say thank you for your service and sacrifice in making our city safe,” Cr Pisasale said. Minister Dempsey, who is from Ipswich said that in his opinion the Safe City cameras are a contributing factor to the drop in crime in Ipswich. “The crime rate has dropped remarkably in Ipswich, and that’s not due to just the police, it’s about all levels of government working together with the police to ensure that it is a safer place now than ever before, and you can’t do that without commitment,” he said. “This will continue to be a safe place, and we’ve seen President Obama land in Amberley and it shows Ipswich is a great city. I want to say thankyou to each and every officer. This is a sign and symbol for every current and former officer of the support from the community.”
*Lenny Kravitz has been named as a headliner for the next Byron Bay Bluesfest. The rocker will be the top billed artist on the opening night of the five-day festival, held over the Easter weekend in 2015. Other headliners for the festival include the Black Keys, Paolo Nutini, Paul Kelly and Ben Harper. *It’s official! Katy Perry, currently doing a 23date tour of Australia will be performing the half time show at the Superbowl in February.
Jennifer Aniston has revealed she took two months off the gym and ate more to prepare for her role in the upcoming film, “Cake”. To play Claire Simmons — a woman who struggles with chronic pain after an accident — Jen had to forfeit her super fit rig. “I basically just didn’t work out for two-and-a-half months. I stopped working out and I stopped being as careful about my diet as I normally am. I was still healthy, but I’d allow more,” she told Shape Magazine. “I don’t think I could have done this five or ten years ago. I don’t know if I could have brought to the part then what I brought now.” Ok, now I’m REALLY looking forward to this movie. *In recent years we’ve become accustomed to novels being adapted into multiple films, with the final volumes in the Harry Potter, Twilight and Hunger Games sagas all being split into two parts each. Then there’s The Hobbit precendent, of course, where a shortish book was expanded to a nine-hour trilogy. Now, unsurprisingly, director Josh Boone has revealed the plan for adapting Stephen King’s colossal The Stand: it will be divided into four movies. First published in 1978, The Stand was always epic in size and scope, but was re-issued in 1990 in an “author’s cut” that was even longer. The immense challenge of writing the adaptation has passed through several hands, with Boone finally coming up with his own draft. He hopes to start shooting in the first half of next year.

Justin Bieber is the highest-earning entertainer under the age of 30, according to Forbes. Despite his impressive earnings, Justin has endured a turbulent year, which included having to pay a $10,700 bill for abandoning his pet monkey in Germany. Meanwhile, the Forbes top ten features eight other musical acts, including One Direction, Taylor Swift and Rihanna, while ‘Hunger Games’ star Jennifer Lawrence is the only name from the world of cinema. The highest-earning entertainers under 30, according to Forbes: 1. Justin Bieber, 20, $80 million 2. One Direction, 21 (average age), $75 million 3. Taylor Swift, 24, $64 million 4. Bruno Mars, 29, $60 million 5. Rihanna, 26, $48 million 6. Miley Cyrus, 22, $36 million 7. Jennifer Lawrence, 24, $34 million 8. Lady Gaga, 28, $33 million 9. Avicii, 25, $28 million 10. Skrillex, 26, $18 million *There was good news and bad news for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 at the box office last week. First the good: with $123 million at US cinemas alone (and $275 million worldwide so far), the film has rocketed to the top of the earnings chart for the most successful opening weekend of 2014. And the bad? Despite that success, it’s still lagging behind both the original Hunger Gamesand Catching Fire in terms of first weekend hauls. *Actress Halle Berry has successfully won a court order banning ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry from straightening their daughter’s naturallycurly hair. The French-Canadian model recently decided to alter little Nahla’s look by having her

locks tamed and lightened with highlights, but the makeover did not sit well with Berry, who allegedly accused Aubry of trying to hide her African-American roots. She sent her lawyer Steve Kolodny to court to object to Aubry’s actions as part of their bitter custody battle, and after hearing arguments from both sides, a judge ruled that neither the six year old’s mother nor father could change the girl’s style. The hearing was the latest in the former couple’s ongoing fight over custody following its split in 2010. Berry is seeking to reduce her monthly child support payments from $17,311 to around $4,111. Till next time… Louise
Beer is something a lot of us love, but why is that? It tastes good and it’s refreshing are the most common responses and they are some great responses, but I’m here today to give you some extra ‘ammo’ when posed with the question as to why you love beer. First things first, beer and food is a match made in heaven. It doesn’t matter what you’re eating, a beer exists that can compliment or contrast your meal, and they can even cleanse your palate for your next course. My ultimate pairing is spicy cajun chicken wings with a bold fruity IPA - a perfect match! Not only does the IPA cool the heat, it also accentuates the herbs and spices. Now when it comes to moderate alcohol consumption and it’s health benefits wine gets all the credit - well not today! Your beer contains just as many antioxidants as a glass of wine plus it’s higher in protein and vitamin B. Now while I don’t recommend any alcohol as a health food, if your going to have an alcoholic drink, why not have one that contains iron, calcium, phosphates and fibre - beer of course. Also, research by Italy’s Fondazione di Ricerca e Cura shows that both men and women who drink a little more than one pint of beer a day are 31 per cent less likely to suffer from heart attack, stroke and heart disease. Now I must stress, I am not saying
go out and drink as many beers as you can because its good for you, moderation is key. Finally, beer, especially in Australia, has the negative stereotype of causing the dreaded ‘Beer Belly’. Beer does not directly cause you to increase in weight, it is what we eat with the beer that ultimately does the damage, usually greasy bar snacks high in carbs, fats, salts and sugars. So it should not be called a ‘Beer Belly’, it’s a ‘Bar Snack Belly’. To sum up, beer, when consumed in moderation, should be something you can enjoy any reason and not something you feel guilty or self-conscious about consuming, and if you want to try some cracking beers, and impress your friends with your new knowledge about beer, then head down to Char’d at the Prince Alfred Hotel, where their craft beer range is growing fast! Cheers… Tim

“Iraqi security forces are demonstrating resolve, with locals slowly responding to the security environment, starting to form groups that are rising up and starting to reduce the influence of ISIL within their towns.” Chief of Joint Operations Vice Admiral David Johnston
Air Power turning the tide in Iraq Coalition Air Power in the Middle East, which includes Australia’s six F/A-18F Super Hornets, is gradually turning the tide against Islamic militants across Iraq. Chief of Joint Operations, Vice Admiral David Johnston says that the progress of ISIL forces has been slowed through air attacks and Iraqi land force engagements of ISIL forces. “Iraqi security forces are demonstrating resolve, with locals slowly responding to the security environment, starting to form groups that are rising up and starting to reduce the influence of ISIL within their towns,” he said. While ISIL continues to pose a serious military threat, to Iraq, to the region and the broader international community, the air campaign is working - and the ongoing program to rebuild the capacity of the Afghan security forces is showing some signs of success. Operations by the broader Coalition, involving 60 nations, have forced ISIL to reduce its profile to air attack, and engage in more localised operations. “Predictably, ISIL are engaging in asymmetric warfare tactics, such as Improvised Explosive Devices and suicide bombers,” Vice Admiral Johnston said. The air attacks continue to achieve results. In recent weeks, Australia’s Super Hornets have released weapons on 20 occasions, bringing the total of weapon releases to 47. In the past fortnight, a Weapon System Officer in a RAAF Super Hornet, operating near Kirkut, observed ISIL militants moving towards what turned out to be a large well established and hidden network of caves and bunkers
Gift
concealed in a hillside. During the combat air patrol, using the TV and infrared pod carried under the aircraft, the crew were able to track militants moving into mountainous area. They then disappeared, indicating they went into the terrain. Within 24 hours a multinational strike package of 20 aircraft attacked 40 targets, complemented by a large ground operation led by the Kurdish security forces. They rapidly entered the area and cleared it of remaining ISIL elements, reportedly killing more than 100 ISIL fighters in the engagement. In a later mission, a RAAF Super Hornet crew took the mission command role in another
multinational air strike against a major IED factory in Mosul. This was a highly complex mission, with the target located within a multi-building compound in a densely populated area in Mosul. Coalition aircraft attacked 34 targets in that area. The IED factory was severely damaged with many parts destroyed. Air attacks have also killed ISIL leaders, which is having an effect as it reduces ISIL capability to regenerate leadership within its force element groups. The combat jets have been supported increasingly by E-7A ‘Wedgetail’ AEW&C aircraft and KC-30A refueller aircraft.

Director General Air Operations, Air Commodore Joe Lervasi said that before air strikes of such complexity there would be surveillance and intelligence to determine who is actually there, to minimise any impact on civilians and property – establishing “pattern of life” knowlege of the area. AIRCDRE Lervasi said that the intelligence picture on such operations is aided by UAVs operating over the target area providing full motion video of what’s happening back to a control centre. Threat levels have remained benign, with no indication of surface-to-air missiles being moved into area. Australia’s commitment of six Super Hornets to the operation is considered appropriate to the rate of effort required. However, air crew rotation is expected, to refresh the core skills of the pilots and WSOs now deployed. Australian Special Forces operations have also begun following negotiations with the Iraqi Government to move the task group into Baghdad. These forces will work with the Iraqi counter terrorism service in an ‘advise and assist’ role, with the objective of reinforcing

that Service, to enable it to conduct counter attacks against ISIL forces. Australian C-130s are continuing with humanitarian missions, with air drops over the Mt Sinjar region delivering 32 tons of food, water, tents and blankets – in the prelude to winter setting in. The ability of Iraqi forces to maintain control of the Baiji oil refinery north of Bagdhad is particularly important, on two fronts. Gaining access to or denying delivery from oil refineries

is a clear objective of ISIL, in gaining revenue to support their operations and denying the Iraqi Government access to the refineries. In June, the Baiji refinery, the largest in Iraq, was fiercely contested by Iraqi and ISIL forces. The Iraqis resisted and maintained a small presence resident in the refinery compound but they were cut off from friendly forces. This required air drops into the compound to sustain those forces. Securing and operating the Baiji refinery is critical to the economy of Iraq and conversely in supporting ISIL should its forces have control. The refinery is capable of producing 170,000 to 300,000 barrels of oil per day, which is between $13 million and $24 million per day. Maritime operations in the region continue, with HMAS Toowoomba involved in a recent drug interdiction operation. This seisure netted 324 kilograms of heroin, with a street value of $129 million, hidden inside a Dhow vessel. This and other confiscations amounte do about $500 million in drugs, used by drug cartels to fund a range of activities including terrorism. This brings the amount seized by Australian ships to more than $3.5 million. Their is no end in sight for a completion of Coalition operations in Iraq, as it will depend on how well the integration of air power with Iraqi land force operation progresses - and the consequent effect that has on ISIL.

Defence personnel support via YouTube A video reminding Australian Defence Force members that support is available no matter what stage of their career is now on You Tube. The video is aimed at serving members, with the central message “while you may not need help now, you might need it down the track.” This is part of a wider campaign to inform the Defence and Veteran community about services and support available, flowing from the Review of Military Compensation Arrangements recommendations. The Review was conducted to establish how well the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act (2004) is meeting the needs of the current and former serving Australian Defence Force members and their families. The Review made 108 recommendations, of which 96 were accepted by Government. The majority of those recommendations that have been actioned have resulted in significant positive outcomes for current serving members, veterans and their families, including expanded eligibility to access support, health care and rehabilitation, increased compensation and a more seamless delivery of these entitlements. From Clearance Diver to Mercenary By Hugh O’Brien After an ordinary childhood, Hugh ‘Obi’ O’Brien’s life has been surprising. What took this sporty country boy from Sydney boarding school to directionless youth to navy clearance diver, slipping undetected through deep waters to defuse mines and dismantle bombs? Upping that level of adrenaline, Obi joined the Special Forces counterterrorism unit TAG (East) – no picnic. In a memoir full of eye-popping anecdotes, he colourfully recounts this wild ride. He reveals the painful transition from military life to his days on underwater construction projects to private security work. (Random House)

By Kathryn Spurling A Grave Too Far Away describes the highs and lows of their training and military service through letters, interviews and remembered stories. The demands of the bombing campaign on men and aircraft were enormous and the horrors of war deeply felt by the youthful Australians ordered to carry out operations. After WWII these young men would face derision and would fight their own demons but their service and sacrifice would continue to reverberate for generations around the globe. Their loss and legacy will endure for generations. Author Kathryn Spurling served with the Australian Navy. Dr Spurling has lectured overseas and was the first Australian invited to speak at NATO HQ on the subject of women in the military. (New Holland)

MATTERS Technology and advice BY MARK BOURIS
We’ve all marveled at the information accessible on the internet, and the speed with which we can compare one item with another. Nowhere has this access to information been better exploited than in financial services. But having watched e-commerce become normal, Australians still make the distinction between low-cost convenience transactions, and high-value strategic decisions. For most people there’s still a difference between ease of technology and the need for advice. How do you decide whether to buy online rather than use a broker or adviser? One distinction might be size and importance. Australians can search for mortgages online and apply over the phone. However, the Mortgage & Finance Association of Australia has found that of the growth in the mortgage market in the year to June 2014, 61 per cent was driven by brokers. That was a 32 per cent increase on the 2013 figure. Clearly, Australians like interaction with an expert when they take on their biggest debt. The opposite is the case when applying for credit cards and operating bank accounts. These are ‘transactional’ and we’re comfortable to use the internet and call centres to administer our daily banking.
Consumers also transact directly online with their super and their share portfolios. This seems to work best with users who have good knowledge of the options, and understand the choices. However, insurance is another thing. If you’ve been insuring your car for years, a quick price-comparison on the internet at renewal time probably prepares you for buying more insurance over the phone or online. More than half of retail insurance premiums are written by advisers and brokers, probably because Australians think about insurance once a year and they need someone who thinks about it every day. The advantage you get with an adviser is obvious in life insurances which include death cover, total permanent disablement (TPD), trauma and income protection. You can buy taxfriendly life policies in your super fund. Life insurance issuers rarely have the best product and premium for more than one product line at a time. They take turns having the best products for TPD or income protection etc. Some insurers are strong in some occupations. An independent adviser knows this — you probably don’t. Luckily, it isn’t a choice between the internet or advice. The trick is to use both, according to their strengths and your needs. What do you favour? Internet or advice? I’d love to hear what you think. Particular credit was also directed at the Commodore’s responsive ride and handling which was developed and tuned at Holden’s Lang Lang Proving Ground in Australia. The Commodore SV6 also distinguished itself from its rivals through its superior fuel economy and cost of ownership. The SV6’s frugal, yet powerful V6 engine can deliver fuel economy of just 9.0 litres per 100 kilometres, and Holden’s attractive Capped Price Servicing and Warranty offers remain some of the best in the industry. Holden’s Executive Director - Corporate Affairs, George Svigos said that for VF Commodore to win the award for a second year running reflected its exciting performance and excellent value for money. “The VF Commodore is the most advanced car ever built in Australia,” Mr. Svigos said. “The SV6 is a great looking car and it offers exhilarating power in the form of our 3.6 litre V6 engine and well-connected in-car technology with MyLink. After extensive testing, judges award points based on 18 criteria including vehicle handling, cost and environmental performance. This is the second year the VF Commodore SV6 has won the award.
Llewellyn motors has always serviced Springfield, but is now proving it, with a new shop front at Orion Shopping Centre Llewellyn Motors business development manager Matthew Taylor-Farrington said the idea came about after the popular auto sales and service company identified a need for a bigger presence in the Springfield area. “We envisage to be there a lot longer, but initially we’ve set up a six month trial at Orion as a one-stop shop for car sales and service for all the brands we cover including Holden, Toyota, Hyundai and Subaru. “Sharni and Janelle are there every day where Springfield residents can enquire about new vehicles or servicing with no worries about distance. “Anyone interested in a test drive of a new vehicle can book it, and we will bring the car to your house, then meet you in the driveway,” Matthew said. Llewellyns service department has a courtesy bus to drop off customers which has been running to the area for over two years, but Llewellyns is hoping to take it to the next level. “We are in the process of setting up a shopfront where we can offer the service where you can leave your car in Springfield, our truck will pick it up and
people who get the train to work can come back to Springfield and their car will be there ready to drive home,” Matthew said. With full online capabilities, Springfield residents can log anything online. “Whether it’s an enquiry about a new vehicle, getting a test drive or a service query it is logged and chased up by our staff. “It’s proving very popular with people in Springfield, we just want people to know that they are being serviced by Llewellyns, as we are committed to the area, plus people can get everything they need including Hyundai, Toyota, Holden and Suburu sales and service,” Mr Taylor-Farrington said.
