Ipswich Mower & Saw Service 466 Warwick Road YAMANTO 4305 Ph: 07 3288 8126

Many different birds will soon flock, along with their owners, to the Ipswich Showgrounds for a popular annual festival. Ipswich City Council Community and Customer Service Committee Chairperson Councillor Bruce Casos said council would be once again lending its support to the Ipswich Bird Spectacular Festival of Feathers. “The festival which will be staged at the Main Exhibit Hall at the Ipswich Showgrounds on June 8 is Queensland’s biggest annual bird show,” Cr Casos said. “The 2014 show is expected to showcase about 1800 birds including Canaries, Budgies, Finches, Lovebirds, Parrots, Lorikeets, Quail, Doves and poultry.” A variety of examples of different species, types and colour variations will be on display. Birds also will be available for sale along with bird supplies and equipment. “Previously known as the Ipswich City and Country Bird Spectacular, this event is a combined effort of the Ipswich District and Budgerigar Society, the Ipswich Canary Society and the Queensland Finch Society and has been an annual event for the Ipswich region since 2000. “Organisers are expecting approximately 1500 people including exhibitors and visitors to attend the 2014 event.” The gates will open to the public from 8.30am to 1.30pm. General inquiries about the spectacular can be directed to Barney on 3294 6484.

Fiona’s on her way!

Fiona O’Loughlin, one of the best known comics in the nation, is making her way for the first time to Ipswich this month for one performance only that is bound to be a sellout. Performing for most of her adult life, Fiona spoke to Ipswich Life from her new home in Melbourne about life on the road, being a working mum and her love of visiting areas outside of the capitals, as she brings her show direct from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival to Brothers on June 19. “We’ve been trying to do some different places as much as we can as I love doing regional areas, its my favourite thing to do,” Fiona said. “I’m made up of regional bones. I love the audiences. I find that I can speak more shorthand with regional audiences as they get stuff quicker, I don’t know why that is. I was raised in a small town and I just have an affinity for regional areas.“ Growing up in the tiny Yorke Peninsula town of Warooka in South Australia, current population less than 300, Fiona lived for many years in Alice Springs, and as a mother of five found that life as a comedian wasn’t the best for a working mum. She must have run up a lot of Frequent Flyer points. Has she ever considered adding up all the miles she’s travelled over the years? “Oh my God, no I haven’t, but it must be a lot.

I’ve got a lifetime gold pass, and a platinum card. My daughter said that its good that if I ever get homeless there is somewhere that I can always have a shower and a bowl of soup! “It was too much living in Alice Springs, as it was 8 months of the year I was on the road, but now I’m based in Melbourne, and I’m only on the road 4 months a year. Alice Springs normally only has one flight in and out a day. I still love travelling though! “It’s a bit tricky translating where I am on Punt Road in Melbourne versus Alice Springs. I live on an artery to the city, basically. Dave O’Neil told me to ‘think of it as the sound of the ocean’, its weird that eventually your brain blocks out the noise, but I love it living here. “Being a working mum certainly gave me my initial audience base, and I’m so lucky that that base audience has come along and stayed, but many more are coming on board which makes me better. As long as I keep my eyes and ears open, I have a lot more younger people coming to my shows now. I don’t know what that’s about, as I’m not trying to be groovy and down with the kids. That’s the last thing I want but as long as I have something that relates

to the audience, young and old. That’s the thing that makes you work harder in that respect.” After years of travelling around Australia and the globe, Fiona easily knows the answer when asked about the strangest place she’s ever done. “The strangest place? Port Moresby in PNG, it was the weirdest place. I couldn’t work out what was going on. It wasn’t really my fault, they were expecting a stripper. It was all politicians and businessmen, way before the internet, I was 26 and everything was lost in translation. “I think as you age you become less concerned with stuff like that, or Twitter or Facebook. All I’ve ever wanted to do was transport my ‘dinner party self’ onto the stage. I’m peeling off as many layers as I can, I speak to the audience as I do my friends.” With concerts, NRL, AFL and big theatre productions all with attendances dropping over the last couple of years, comedians seem to be flourishing. Something not lost on one of the nation’s hardest working comedians. “As a nation, as a planet…we need to laugh more. The only two industries that thrived in the Great Depression were vaudeville and booze, so people will always want to be entertained. “This show I’m bringing to Ipswich is the same one I did at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Its in essence five stories, one includes a ‘nearly’ affair, and others from travelling the road.” Talking of travelling, is there one thing Fiona never tours without? “That’s easy...my headphones. I have these big headphones. My kids are absolutley mortified that I wear them, but I love my music, and I love touring. I’m really looking forward to this tour, I can’t wait to see you guys.” Fiona O’Loughlin plays Ipswich on June 19 at Brothers. Tickets available at Brothers or online at www. ipswichtickets.com.au.

WinterNats roar into Ipswich

Photo: Allan “the Fireman” Dobson

The countdown is on to the drag racing event of the year - the Fuchs WinterNationals, to be held at Willowbank Raceway this coming Queens Birthday long weekend 5 - 8 June.

The Winternationals is one of the racing highlight of year and attracts up to 500 racers and 30,000 spectators over four days. Feature racing includes: Top Fuel, Top Alcohol, Top Doorslammer,

Pro Stock, Top Fuel Motorcycle, Pro Stock Motorcycle Other racing includes: Competition, Super Stock, Super Compact, Competition Bike, Donnelly Blasting Services

Supercharged Outlaws, Knijff Earthmoving Modified, Powercruise Super Sedan, Prime Signs/Speed Elec Super Street, Modified Bike, Junior Dragster, Super Gas and Factory Xtreme.

‘Fireman’ Dobson on a hot streak to WinterNats From the past three rounds of the ANDRA Top Fuel championship, West Australian fireman Allan Dobson has emerged victorious each time, seeing him in the box seat of the Top Fuel title chase as it heads to the FUCHS Winternationals this weekend. The Winternationals is a favoured stomping ground of Dobson, after he won the 2012 event before returning to Willowbank Raceway in 2014 to claim victory from both championship rounds of the Santo’s Super 3 Extreme Drag Race event presented by Uplift Cranes and Titan Cranes, held at Easter. Courtesy of his recent form and a runnersup result at the Perth Westernationals, Dobson will lead the title chase to Willowbank Raceway as he looks to put together a fourth consecutive victory for the Rapisarda Autosport International team. “Both myself and the team have been so pleased with the recent results, and especially

with being able to win the Louie Rapisarda Top Fuel Trophy at Easter,” said Dobson, who claimed the memorial trophy that honours RAI team owner Santo Rapisarda’s own son by taking the most points of any Top Fuel driver over the two day, two round Easter event. “While Sydney’s X-Champs presented a bit of a challenge we were able to find that balance again come race day, and now we come back to Willowbank Raceway 40 points in front of the title chase and ready to make a good assault to try and win the championship for the Rapisarda Autosport International team, which would be a maiden Top Fuel title for myself and crew chief Santino.”

With the recent hot streak and the biggest event of the year on the horizon, Dobson and the team are very much aware of the external pressures being in contention for the championship can bring. “We are very much looking forward to getting to Willowbank Raceway and participating at the FUCHS Winternationals, it is such a special event on the calendar and especially at this time of my career where I am chasing the championship it really does mean everything to me,” said the Quinns Rock (WA) resident. WinterNats roar into Ipswich

American girl racer heading to Ipswich Twenty-eight year old Grace Howell will make her debut in the Australian professional ranks at Willowbank Raceway’s FUCHS Winternationals (5-8 June 2014), competing in the Pro Stock category. It will be the first time the former professional NHRA drag racer will compete on Australian soil after moving to Australia in 2013 from South Carolina to be with her Australian partner and Pro Stock racer Scott Porter, and with years of drag racing experience behind her the petite blonde powerhouse is sure to be one to watch. “I used to race in the United States, really I grew up racing, first in Junior Dragster and then Super Stock, before going on to race professionally in the Sport Compact Series and in Pro Stock,” said Howell, the 1996 NHRA Junior Dragster National Champion who also boasts a Stock Automatic class win at the NHRA US Nationals (in a factory-backed Jet Cobra) and back-to-back NHRA event wins in June of 2008 (Pro Stock, Rocky Mountain Raceway and Stock Eliminator, Ohio). “In August it would have been two years since I took the wheel of a race car as I took a break when I decided to move to Australia. “When it comes to Pro Stock I have found that between the NHRA and ANDRA versions it is very similar. Scott’s car is almost identical to the car I used to drive in the States and it is a bonus that I have found the engines here to

be a lot smoother and easier to drive also. “When Scott asked if I wanted to race his car at the FUCHS Winternationals it was a bit of a daunting thought at first, I have been happy living a normal life per se but I am really excited, it is going to be so great to be able to race with my little family here,.” When she climbs into the driver’s seat Howell will be only the second female racer to compete in the professional level Pro Stock bracket in Australia. “I really love that drag racing is one of those

motorsports where women can really compete on an equal footing with the men, and I feel very fortunate that I have had the opportunity to do that,” said Howell, who has also recently become a business owner, acquiring eyelash extension business iLash Mackay. “I know there is a lot of focus at times on being the first woman racer to do certain things, but for me personally it is more about just being able to compete – I would rather do well as a competitor overall than just as a ‘girl competitor’.

World’s fastest compacts to light up Winternationals Ten of the world’s fastest sport compact racers will take to the Willowbank Raceway quarter mile on Friday 6th and Saturday 6th and 7th of June as Factory Xtreme showcase the very best side-by-side turbocharged drag racing on the planet. In a category that sees fire breathing four and six cylinders vehicles up against the fastest rotary engines around, low six-second performances and world record performances are their stock in trade. Kiwi Factory Xtreme powerhouse Rod Harvey took his 2JZ straight-six powered Toyota Celica to new heights running an impressive world record 376km/h (234mph) at the recent X-Champs at Sydney Dragway, claiming the title as fastest Toyota on the planet. Likewise, the world’s fastest rotary vehicle, the Pac Performance Mazda 6 SP reset its own record to 6.353sec, taking it to within one tenth of a second of the coveted world rotary record, a mark the team will undoubtedly be

looking to retake at the Winternationals. Nissan fans are in for a special treat with a battle of the twin-turbocharged V6s as the world’s fastest sport compact car, Scott Porter’s G35 Infiniti takes on the world’s quickest and fastest GT-R driven by Mark Jacobsen. These six-second beasts will face off in one of seven exhibitions scheduled over two days at the largest drag racing event in the southern hemisphere. The action is going to be fast and furious, with no driver prepared to give an inch of race track. New beauty salon at the Boulevarde There’s a new beauty salon in Ipswich, with the official opening of M Hair in the Boulevarde in Limestone Street. Marina, Kelli and Andreya are excited that after lots of planning and fitting out the salon they finally have their business ‘home’. At the official opening last week, Marina said she felt “very special” having many of her clients, family and friends there to celebrate with her team. “We had a marathon long weekend of work at Easter time to get the salon ready,” Marina said. “Everyone, especially my husband Paul, has my great appreciation in being able to open for business the following week after Easter. “This is a new adventure in our lives, and we are looking forward to working in the great atmosphere of the Boulevarde, especially with Seed Coffee here as well.” Mayor Paul Pisasale said at the official opening that it was great to see a small business group in the Boulevarde. “Hans and Ruth Booij had great confidence in Ipswich, long before others came along, and

There are so many organisations in our city doing such great work to help and support people going through hard times. They are the unseen safety net, catching and restoring thousands of people each year. On June 18, many of them will be represented at Streetlinks, which will bring together around 40 agencies so that people who need help the most can find it all in one place. The one day event is coordinated and hosted by Central Church Ipswich together with its crisis relief ministry, Ipswich Assist. Ipswich Assist’s Paul Blake said, “Our vision is to connect people who need help the most with the people who can help the most. Streetlinks will have information for people who are doing it tough, including how to find accommodation, access legal help, get help from Centrelink, access medical assistance and much more. “Our hope is that Streetlinks will provide more than information, but will also offer hope and a sense that people do not have to ‘go it alone’,” said Mr Blake. Agencies can get involved on the day. For more information contact Paul Blake at Ipswich Assist on 3413 1070 or visit www.ipswichassist. org.au/street_links.

Two sisters’ story: finding the right care for Mum When my sister and I were looking for an aged care facility for our 86 year old mother, we were keen to find a safe and comfortable place where we would be happy to live if we were choosing a place for ourselves. We wanted the best surroundings and care - a place where Mum would be well cared for, have company, and opportunities to socialise and participate in activities, should she wish. She lived on her own in the family home and we were worried that she would have a serious fall, end up in hospital and, should this happen, not have the choice of which aged care facility she would be sent to. Seasons was everything that we hoped it would be for Mum, and we felt secure in our knowledge that we had done the best for her. The staff were friendly and helpful, the surroundings clean, pleasant, modern and comfortable. There was someone to check on her regularly, and the security cameras in the walkways were an assurance to us. Mum was able to bring her own furniture ensuring her unit felt more like her new home, and the meals were better than she could manage for herself at home on her own. Mum loved the gardens and her new surroundings. Her unit was light and airy. She didn’t have to worry about a thing. We would recommend Seasons Redbank Plains to anyone needing a top quality home for elderly parents. What Origin colour do YOU bleed? One State of Origin series the ‘Blues’ ARE winning is at the Blood Bank. So it’s time to win back the blood donation crown for Queensland! State of Origin fever is sweeping again across Queensland New South Wales, and footy fans are being urged to put themselves on the line for their state. The Red Cross Blood Service is calling on people to donate before Origin 3, with both states going head-to-head on and off the field in the ‘Donate for your State’ challenge. Amy McDowell, local Blood Service spokesperson said that she was hoping to see a win to Queensland, and that by donating blood fans could show their loyalty for their team and also save lives. “We’re asking people to make it their goal to give blood during this Origin series. The maroons are giving blood on the field, it’s time for people to roll up their sleeves and show what colour they bleed. “Blood is needed by people who are battling cancer, or those injured in an emergency such as road trauma, who may not see another origin series without blood” Since 2007 the challenge has identified the best donor state. Last year the crown went to NSW, 214 to Queensland’s 197. Can you help win it for Queensland in 2014? Amy said one in three people will need blood or blood products during

Racing.. at the Ipswich Cup Ipswich Cup is the Social Event of 2014! It’s everyone’s favourite time of year…so get your best fashion ready for The Cup. Don’t miss the fashion, the glamour, the excitement, the racing and of course, the after party - and it’s all happening Saturday June 14! The countdown is on for the second Saturday in June when it’s time again for Ipswich to stand out from the rest, and to showcase the social and party spirit of the whole Ipswich Community through Ipswich Cup Day. For many years Ipswich Cup Day has stood as the Provincial Club race meeting that attracts more patrons than any other right across Australia. Interstate and International visitors

6 IPSWICHLIFE

continue to grow in numbers to experience the famous Ipswich Cup atmosphere and this year will be no exception! Whether patrons are in the Grandstand Marquees, Infield Marquees, Member’s Stand, or General Public, Ipswich Cup Day is a day not to be missed. In addition to the brilliant excitement of live thoroughbred racing, there is entertainment

galore. The Ipswich Thistle Pipe Band welcomes patrons by performing on the course proper at the commencement of the day. The popular live band ‘Wasabi’ plays on the infield throughout the afternoon, and the after party featuring the sounds of the Pink and Katy Perry tribute band keeps patrons entertained well into the evening. In the members and public area there are

tickets to be won on the day to the XXXX Island by entering the competition at the XXXX Gold Container Bar. The Orion Pamper Tent is available in the public area for the all important beauty touch ups, and the Fashions on the Field competition will again be hotly contested. The racing action will as usual be keen as interstate and international equine visitors compete for a share of the $800,000 prize money on offer across the eight races on the day. The major races are the three listed events of the time-honoured Channel 7 Ipswich Cup, the famous sprint race of the City of Ipswich Eyeliner Stakes, and the increasingly popular Sky Racing Gai Waterhouse Fillies and Mares Classic. Winners of these three races have come from around Australia and across the ditch from New Zealand. The Ipswich Cup started 80 years ago in its current form, although the oldest known Ipswich Cup was that won by ‘Jibboom’ in 1866. That Cup is today on show in the Ipswich Art Gallery and the modern Ipswich Cup was modelled on the shape of that earlier version, being of silver with a modern Gold plating. The 2014 version of the Ipswich Cup Day is somewhat different to those earlier days

although it is no less enjoyed. Despite the Grandstand Marquee positions being sold out months prior to Cup Day, there are still infield marquee tickets on sale, as well as tickets into the general public area and viewing terrace. The Terrace this year has an uninterrupted view after a change to last year’s setup. For tickets on the big day, contact the Ipswich Turf Club on 3282 1500 or go to our website at www.ipswichturfclub.com

Tips for Fine Fillies

2

Want to maintain your fresh and fabulous race day look all day at the Ipswich Cup? We’ve got the inside tips to keep you looking your best, right up until the after-race party.

Dressing for race day can be tricky, particularly when there’s a good chance of a chilly and possibly windy day ahead. No one wants their skirt to fly up in front of a huge crowd (a la Princess Kate’s recent wardrobe malfunction), so here are our top style tips for a flash-free fashion fix. Think about choosing a stylish trenchstyle coat instead of a traditional dress as your race wear. Team it with a pair of stylish boots, a fabulous hat, plenty of bling and stand out statement bag. If you’re more of a dress kind of gal, consider a sexy 1940s silhouette with an on-the-knee pencil style skirt. Best hoof forward: Dreading the stilettos sinking into the turf on race day? Nothing says ‘inappropriate footwear’ like a mudcovered shoe heel so why not opt for a stylish wedge or a low-heeled boot; plus, there’s less chance you’ll end up barefoot and carrying your shoes at the end of the races – not a good look ladies. In the bag: Some clever forward thinking when you pack your clutch purse for the day can make all the difference. Wondering how to fit your normal everyday items into a tiny bag? You don’t need to with this failsafe race day emergency kit. A travel lip brush with a top – load up the bristles with your colour of choice, put the cap on and you’ll have enough to last you the whole day. Cotton tips are great for keeping your eye makeup fresh throughout the day, and don’t forget band aids or blister patches, tissues, powder compact and puff. Most importantly, enjoy the day.

When I’m out and about in Ipswich talking with constituents, I’m frequently asked about various government procedures and processes, in particular how committees work.

I’m the chairman of the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee and my colleague Sean Choat, Member for Ipswich West, also sits on the committee. We are currently conducting an inquiry on strategies to prevent and reduce criminal activity. A committee inquiry typically consists of engagement with stakeholders and the calling for submissions from interested parties. Stakeholders may be asked to provide evidence at public hearings and the committee assesses the likely impact of the Bill. An inquiry report is then prepared containing recommendations and where appropriate, proposes amendments to improve the Bill. Members of Parliament are able to consider the committee reports

With Ian Berry MP MEMBER FOR IPSWICH

before they debate and vote on the Bill in Parliament. Anyone with an interest in any of these Bills or issues can follow the progress of these committee inquiries and get involved. You can check the Parliament’s website to see the status of each inquiry, including dates for public submissions to be received and upcoming hearing details. Individuals, groups and organisations are encouraged to make submissions and have their opinions heard. The Parliament’s website address is www. parliament.qld.gov.au. On the website’s front page, select the ‘Work of Committees’ tab to find all information relevant to each committee. Copies of all committee reports are available on the website. Committee public hearings are often broadcast live on the Parliament’s website and then available to watch on replay afterwards. If you have any general enquiries about Parliamentary Committees, you can phone 3406 7671 or email - CommitteeOffice@ parliament.qld.gov.au

Jamie’s Ministry of Food to remain in Ipswich Ipswich has taken to the Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food in D’Arcy Doyle Place so much that the benefits will continue, with an twoyear extension of their lease.

Councillor Victor Attwood said The Good Foundation Pty Ltd had operated the community cooking school in d’Arcy Doyle Place since January 2011. The current lease was to expire this financial year, but will be extended until June 2016. Council have provided a site for Australia’s first Jamie’s Ministry of Food Centre over the past three years. “The Good Foundation has been extremely successful in the operation of Jamie’s Ministry of Food and it is well patronised by the public and has provided a great service to the broader community” Cr Attwood said. A total of 2817 participants have commenced a course at the Ipswich centre. Jamie’s Ministry of Food campaign is a practical solution to the problems of obesity and diet-related disease and a successful response to the lack of basic food skills in the population. “By teaching people to start cooking more for themselves and equipping them with some simple skills and knowledge, the campaign encourages participants to change in the way they and their families eat and how they think about food,” Cr Attwood said. “The program has been a great success in Ipswich and its continuation for a further two years will be of great benefit to the community as it will help to further educate, empower and inspire people to love and enjoy good food and increase their cooking skills.” 10 IPSWICHLIFE

To date 3790 members of the local community have attended a cooking demonstration or sneak-peek class. Staff from the centre have also hosted demonstrations at local events such as the Ipswich Show, the Goodna Jacaranda Festival as well as at local schools and community organisations. “The centre has also maintained an active presence in the community since its inception when it opened early as a drop-in centre, providing free meals as part of the flood relief efforts in January 2011,” Cr Attwood said. Currently the centre was supported by a team of 35 active volunteers and each week these volunteers provided more than 114 hours of service. One of the highlights of the past three years was the personal visit to the centre by Jamie Oliver himself in March 2012, where he hosted a cooking class for 20 lucky participants in front of an audience which got national attention. For more information on Jamie’s Ministry of Food Ipswich and upcoming classes visit the website at http://www.jamieoliver.com/ jamies-ministry-of-food-australia/ Above: Flashback to when Jamie Oliver was in Ipswich in 2012 which drew national attention. The Ministry of Food will remain in Ipswich until at least 2016.

Enviroplan competition open for entry

Principals unite for $5m Trade Centre A new Trade Training Centre at Ipswich State High School will provide training for students from five local schools - the result of cooperation and action by school principals. The facilities will train the next generation of ‘tradies’ who can then go on to careers in construction, mining, carpentry or metal work. The Centre will service secondary students from Rosewood State High, Lowood State High, Bremer State Secondary College, Bundamba Secondary College and Ipswich State High. Funding was allocated by the former Federal Labor Government’s $2.5 billion investment, to give students in Years 9 through 12 the opportunity to access trade training facilities. Focused on both general and civil construction, the Trade Training Centre includes sheds, excavator equipment, a training road, along with an area for industry partners. Interior facilities provide large trade training areas for metalwork (fitting and turning, metal presses, welding, woodwork (turning and lathes), wet areas (concreting, cement, etc), and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD). The Centre plans to provide teaching in other skills dependent upon future workplace need. “This is a fantastic opportunity for local students to benefit from industry standard

trade training infrastructure and equipment,” said Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann at the official opening of the Centre last week. “This Trade Training Centre will be one of four facilities, worth more than $11million in total, built in this electorate since 2008. “Secondary students from 12 schools are benefitting from more career options with the Trade Training Centres (TTCs) located at Ipswich State School, St Peter Claver College, Staines Memorial College and St Edmund’s College.” “TTCs play an important role in creating a link between schools, students, industry and local businesses. The program will help support students to stay in school and get a qualification as well as address skills shortages in traditional trades and other occupations.” “All the principals partnered together to get this happening, and over five thousand students will have access to it.”

Nature and its beauty will be the focus of entries as the popular Ipswich Enviroplan Photographic Competition opens for entries. This annual competition offers a total prize pool of more than $5000. Councillor Heather Morrow said the search was on again for images that best capture Ipswich’s rich natural heritage with plenty of categories open to anyone with a camera. “This competition keeps getting bigger and better, with images that are surprising, revealing, breathtaking, and drawn from our own backyard,” Cr Morrow said. “Photographers of all ages and skill levels are invited to take part in this challenging and exciting photographic experience. “No matter whether it’s natural landscapes, flora, fauna, or other environmental themes, there’s plenty of scope in this competition.” This year, photographers can compete in any of these categories: Native birds of

Ipswich, Native flora of Ipswich, Native fauna of Ipswich, Native insects and arachnids of Ipswich, Landscapes of Ipswich, People in the Natural Environment, Bremer River, and Clean and Green Ipswich. Follow competition announcements and developments at Ipswich.qld.gov.au or on the Ipswich City Council Facebook page. New weather office at RAAF Amberley to improve support for air operations A new Meteorology office has opened on RAAF Amberley, to assist the squadrons with flight planning for air operations. The Bureau of Meteorology has operated on the base for over forty years, and also provides weather information for the City of Ipswich. Senior Meteorologist Arveen Singh said that having the office on base gives the most accurate reading for all aircraft. “The Met Office provides an meteorology forecasting service to the fast jets, heavy lift and air refuelling aircraft along with other users on the base. “It also provides weather observations and a refined three-hourly forecast for the airfield. We monitor the weather closely, as the Super Hornets almost always land with minimal fuel so it’s important to warn them in advance of any deteriorating weather conditions. “The Super Hornets particularly need to avoid storms, as a lightening strike can destroy the advanced electronics on board, and the aircraft would be difficult to control. “Thunderstorms also produce poor visibility due to heavy rain and hail, low cloud and severe turbulence and downdrafts which are extremely dangerous during takeoff and landing of the aircraft.” Arveen said that storms, particularly in summer, can cause all kinds of problems if not monitored correctly. “Most storms in Ipswich come from the west and southwest. The ones coming off the

ranges from southwest are most dangerous. They can have large hail and strong damaging winds. A warning is always issued for these storms so that aircraft on the ground can be secured, by moving them to hangars. “Severe storms are usually associated with a surface trough, with lots of cold air undercutting the warms air ahead of the trough, creating a very unstable environment. “Fog on the ground also causes problems for landings and takeoffs. Generally, aircraft don’t operate fron the Base when there is thick fog. “It’s an important station,as it keeps records of extreme weather events and the data is used to create climatic averages for the region.” Photo: Senior ADF Officer RAAF Base Amberley, Air Commodore Tim Innes, and Director of Meteorology Dr Rob Vertessy unveil a Commemorative plaque to officially open the Amberley Bureau of Meteorology office along with Program Coordinator, Defence Weather Services, Shannon Symons and National Manager, Defence Weather Services, Graham de Hoedt.

New superannuation scheme for Defence Forces The Federal Government is introducing a new modern military superannuation scheme for the Australian Defence Force. ADF members to choose which superannuation fund they belong to and, for the first time, the ability to transfer their accumulated benefits to a new fund if they leave the ADF. The new scheme, called ADF Super, will be established on 1 July 2016. These new arrangements aim to provide flexible working conditions for all ADF members under Project Suakin, the ADF’s future workforce model. ADF Super will apply to: those joining the ADF from 1 July 2016; and serving and returning members of the Military Superannuation and Benefits Scheme (MSBS)

who choose to join the new scheme. Importantly, members of the MSBS now serving, or who rejoin the ADF from 1 July 2016, can choose to stay in their current scheme or join ADF Super. There will be no compulsion to transfer to tADF Super. The current Military Superannuation and Benefits Scheme will be closed to new members from 1 July 2016.

Under the new arrangements, the employer contribution rate will be 15.4 per cent, increasing to 18 per cent during periods of warlike service in recognition of the unique nature of military service. There will be no requirement for ADF members to contribute to their superannuation under the new arrangements. This will provide greater flexibility for individuals in how they manage their finances at various stages of their working life. Recognising that military service can be a dangerous undertaking, ADF members will continue to receive statutory cover for death and invalidity. Importantly, benefits under the new arrangements for these members will be the same as what exists under the current scheme. ADF Super will be established and managed by the Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation, currently the trustee for major Commonwealth schemes, including the current and past military super schemes. The Government will work with ex-service organisations such as the RSL, Defence Force Welfare Association and Alliance of Defence Service Organisations to ensure the successful introduction of the new superannuation arrangements.

Australia could buy short take-off F-35s Australia may consider the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter along with the purchase of the conventional take-off & landing (CTOL) variant on order. The rationale behind an F-35B purchase is that the variant could operate from the two new Canberra-class landing helicopter dock (LHD) amphibious ships. An F-35B acquisition could be in addition to or as part of the 72 F-35s on order. Such a major diversion from the original plan to buy only F-35A variants seems unlikely, given the major, and hugely expensive, project restructuring required. The Canberra class LHDs are being built optimised for amphibious operations using water craft and helicopters. Under planned configuration the ships will not have sufficient fuel and weapons bunkerage to operate F-35Bs, without major upgrades, and the LHDS will not have the thermal protection to the deck required for F-35B down-thrust during takeoff and landing.

Rock band Queen is returning to Australia headed up by American Idol winner Adam Lambert. Queen first recruited Lambert as frontman for a few gigs in 2012 and must’ve been impressed — their upcoming Australian tour is just part of a 30 date concert schedule covering North America and Asia as well. Original frontman Freddie Mercury died in 1991. Their Brisbane show is in September. It might be a fan-favourite but Kings of Leon have admitted they hate playing their breakthrough hit “Sex on Fire” in concerts. But don’t expect it to be dropped off setlists anytime soon, Nathan Followill said: “I would be pretty damn happy if my sex was never ever on fire again. Fans want it and you have to do it, and after so many albums together I can tell you, there’s a lot of debate about what records make it onto a setlist.” After cancelling tour dates earlier this year due to illness, Lorde has announced the rescheduled concerts. NOT HAPPY WITH YOUR GAS FITTER OR PLUMBER? BY MARK BOURIS

Seventy reasons to wise up on Super... Many people with super are encouraged to have their nest egg weighted in equities, until the last few years before retirement, when they are encouraged to switch to cash and bonds. Actually, in retirement, you still need income-producing growth assets (equities). This is because you have to keep it growing ahead of inflation for a long time. Have a look at this scenario: two neighbours invest $10,000 in 1980. One invests in 12-month term deposits, rolling them over every year; the other invests in the top 200 Australian companies by size (the ASX 200). They each take the annual income each investment produces. By 2013, the total interest received from the term deposits amounts to $23,935. However, the total income from the shares is $136,445. The shares produced more income despite booms and busts over 33 years. The riskiest investor was actually the deposit holder, because he underestimated the peril of inflation and the real timeframe involved. The change of the retirement age to 70 will not suit everyone, but it’s a chance to look at some serious topics and plan accordingly. For more information call Mike on 0434968862

Australians who once thought they’d retire at 64 have to adjust. Anyone born after 1965 will be retiring at age 70 (to receive the age pension), which will become the official retirement age in 2035. People have some thinking to do, and that should revolve around work, getting your time-frame right and income. Starting with time-frame, if you’re 45, men on average will live for another 40 years and women around 45 years. So we have more years to support ourselves than our parents did, and as the retirement age rises to 70, we’ll also have more years to grow our savings. But these are only averages: significant numbers of women will live to 95 and many men will make it to 90. That means a 45-yearold who stops working at 70 would have to support themselves for 20 to 25 years in retirement, because if the man dies first, and he is five years older than his spouse, then there has to be enough left to fund perhaps another 10 years for his spouse. Which brings us to the ability of your portfolio to provide enough income. Most people focus on the growth of their retirement lump sum. But more important is the amount of income your nest egg can generate above inflation over time.

MOTORING

Motoring News WITH LLEWELLYN MOTORS, IPSWICH

Australia loves Toyota’s 86 Coupé Australian sports car enthusiasts have demonstrated their passion for driving Toyota’s popular 86 coupé by snapping up almost one out of every ten examples sold worldwide.

New Audi A7 Sportback unveiled The spacious five-door coupe is more powerful and attractive – thanks to new engine configurations, new transmissions, new headlights, taillights and new infotainment systems. The A7 combines the emotional appeal and sportiness of a coupe with the comfort of a sedan and the functional benefits of an Avant. Back when the A7 Sportback first debuted in 2010, Audi was already setting new standards in automotive design, embracing an athletic aesthetic and elegance in grand style. Its long engine hood, sporty, flowing C-pillars and the sharply dropping rear end create a dynamic overall impression. The most striking changes are to the Singleframe grille, bumpers, tailpipes and headlights. LED technology is now standard. As an optional feature, Audi can supply Matrix LED headlights, which light the road optimally without causing glare for other road users. Combined with the Matrix LED headlights, dynamic turn signals are also installed at the

front; they come standard at the rear. The body of the new Audi A7 Sportback consists primarily of aluminium and high-tech steel grades. It is extraordinarily lightweight and designed for maximum comfort in terms of noise. The cargo space under the long, electrically driven trunk lid has a base capacity of 535 litres. When the rear seat backs are folded down it grows to 1,390 litres. The sporty style of the exterior is echoed in the car’s interior. The dominant element is the horizontal line surrounding the driver and passenger. The dashboard gives an impression of lightness and elegance. The new interior materials, including the aluminum/ Beaufort walnut inlay and Valcona leather, are impressive for their finish. The color palette has been redesigned, offering five color options even for the seats. Pricing and specification of the new Audi A7 Sportback model range will be announced closer to its Australian launch in the first quarter of 2015.

In a remarkable double, the 10,000th Toyota 86 has just been sold in Australia at virtually the same time as the compact and dynamic sports car has passed 100,000 sales globally. Australia - with 10,363 customers since local sales began in June 2012 - is the biggest market for the 86 outside Japan (39,000) and the United States (35,000). Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the 86 was Australia’s best-selling sports car due to its style, performance, balance, handling and affordability. “The Toyota 86 has become a halo car that demonstrates Toyota’s commitment to designing and engineering cars that really get your heart pumping,” Mr Cramb said. “Importantly, the passion inside Toyota

that led to the 86 is also resulting in more emotional styling and greater driving enjoyment in other Toyota vehicles such as the latest generations of RAV4, Corolla and Kluger.” Mr Cramb said 80 per cent of Australian 86 sales were to private buyers, a significant proportion of whom were new to Toyota including first-time car buyers. “The 86 has helped rejuvenate the company’s brand with an influx of young new customers who may never previously have considered a Toyota. The 86 sales performance - including 6,706 sold in 2013 - is a powerful reminder of Toyota’s sports-car heritage. For information on all things Toyota, contact Llewellyns on 3282 2922..

Toyota and Hybrid Power Toyota is undertaking developments in the laboratory and on the race track to advance generations of hybrid vehicles such as Prius and Camry. The world’s largest producer of petrolelectric hybrid vehicles is targeting gains to performance and fuel efficiency that will extend its lead in hybrid technology. In Japan, Toyota has announced a new generation of computer chips with the potential to boost the fuel efficiency of its hybrid vehicles by 10 per cent* while significantly reducing the size of the crucial power control unit (PCU). Toyota Racing division based in Germany is focused on bringing hybrid know-how to road cars from its participation in the World Endurance Championship sports car racing, including the Le Mans 24-hour classic. Toyota Racing is pushing the limits of hybrid technology in motorsport with its new all-wheel-drive TS040 Hybrid race car that harvests more braking energy that can be stored and used under acceleration to deliver a significant power boost. Compared with last year’s race car, the maximum power of the TS040 Hybrid has increased more than 18 per cent while fuel use has been cut by 25 per cent. Know-how from the motorsport program and Toyota’s on-going research and

development has already been used to enhance the company’s hybrid road cars with more than six million sold worldwide. The newly developed silicon carbide chips — which will undergo on-road testing in Japan within a year - reduce the amount of current lost as heat, and switch the current flow on and off more efficiently. This enables the coil and capacitor, which account for approximately 40 per cent of the size of the PCU, to be reduced in size. Since launching Prius, Toyota has been working on in-house development of power semiconductors and on improving hybridvehicle fuel efficiency. The Le Mans 24-hour is on June 14 -15.
