Anna thanks TAFE for business start Anna Shirley is on the road with her business, in a mobile van she lovingly calls “Mindy”, serving coffee and sweet treats at events across Southeast Queensland. Anna attributes her solid start in her own business to a combination of a desire to succeed and getting a good grounding in business practices though a diploma course at TAFE South West. “Mindy is our beautiful 1950s reproduction Bondwood caravan,” Anna said. “You will find us serving our treats at market days, school sports days and fetes, weddings, parties and Tafe South West events of course.” Anna completed a Diploma of Events Management along with ‘food safety supervisor’ courses before Anna Shirley’s and Mindy were officially up and running. “Having this preparation beforehand was brilliant, as it gave me an opportunity to reinforce skills I had learnt over the past three years in events,” she said. “It also gave me a clearer understanding and vision for ‘Anna Shirley’s’ and boosted my confidence before embarking on my endeavour.” Many small business owners have the skills and experience in what they do, but often they struggle with the business aspects, such as cashflow, marketing and planning. Having experience in events beforehand before launching into her own business was also beneficial for Anna, as she qualified for ‘recognition of prior learning’.

“This was a joy because I basically got to talk non-stop about something I’m so passionate about, with people who clearly feel the same way,” Anna said. “The subjects my teachers suggested I enrol in related directly to my business objectives, which I thought was really insightful and kept my best interests at heart. There was a lot I didn’t know, and having teachers in the industry really gave me a great insight into what I needed to do then, and now. “I found the information I gained invaluable, mainly because I was discussing my business objectives with people who can tell you about important business practices firsthand.”

Anna also appreciated that she could study while still working, instead of being confined to a classroom full time. “I could still work and pay my bills, knowing that my teachers were thinking of my ultimate goal and supporting me to get there. “Learning on the job is how I’ve progressed to the place I am today, but being able to have the accreditation that says I have had training and experience will get me even further. I’m really grateful the opportunity to best out of the Tafe teachers’ industry knowledge and experience.” Photo: Anna Shirley in her coffee & treats van she calls “Mindy”. Photo: Lyle Radford

Library amnesty for a good cause Local library users will be able to swap their overdue items and support a great cause during the month of November. The library amnesty, from November 3, will allow people with long overdue library items to return them to any Ipswich Library service point and have their fines waived in return for a donation to help Ipswich animals in need. Cr David Pahlke said council wanted to encourage library users to hunt around the house for any overdue or misplaced items and ensure they come back to the library during November. “Return them to the counter at any Ipswich Library branch together with a suitable donation for Animal Welfare League and your fines will be waived. “This is a win-win offer – the library fine is paid, the overdue item is returned and your membership card is cleared, allowing you to borrow from the library and of course Ipswich’s needy animals will benefit. “Even if you don’t have any fines donations for the Animal Welfare League are most welcome. “All branch libraries and the mobile library will be accepting donations during the amnesty period,” Cr Pahlke said.

Apprenticeships Queensland has been working in partnership with Bendigo Bank to recruit top quality candidates for positions as business administration trainees both full time, and school-based since 2003. The school-based program has been a great recruitment tool for Bendigo Bank. Following on from that success they have now undertaken to upskill existing workers to gain their Certificate III qualification in Business. Apprenticeships Queensland’s business trainer Lynn Arnold has been working closing with the bank’s staff to ensure the training is completed. Seven staff members have successfully completed the Certificate III in Business Administration and are employed by the bank in their new offices at Tower Central. The Certificate III Guarantee is a key initiative under the Queensland Government’s five-year training reform action plan, ‘Great skills. Real opportunities’, which in many cases is free for employees.

The program provides government subsidy to support eligible individuals to complete their first post-school certificate III qualification. It also supports Queensland’s Year 12 graduates to transition to employment by providing fee-free training in high priority qualifications. Marc Greinke is a seven-year employee of Bendigo Bank and has loved the chance to get some new qualifications. “I work in record management, and they asked me if I was interested in doing the course,” Marc said. “It has taken six months, doing online modules and learning about business. Considering many people doing this are fresh out of school I jumped at it, especially when your employer is so supportive.” Below L-R: Graduates Sheree Thornton from Bundamba, Rosemary Dearden from Collingwood Park, Denise Dickson from Riverview, Clarissa List from East Ipswich and Marc Greinke from Ebbw Vale

Return of the Mac Fleetwood Mac remain one of the biggest names in rock to this very day. After selling millions albums around the world, the band is still active, but sadly hasn’t toured Australia for several years. The classic album ‘Rumours’ needs no introduction, and the stats on that album alone are amazing. It remains the 10th best selling album of all time, and was Number 1 on the US music charts for an astounding 31 weeks! So for those who want to enjoy the sounds of Fleetwood Mac there’s a perfect opportunity with the ‘Seventh Wonder: The Fleetwood Mac Experience’ show which is visiting the Ipswich Civic Centre on Friday November 4th as part of a national tour which is across six states.

Seventh Wonder – The Fleetwood Mac Experience celebrates the 40th anniversary of the birth of the classic Fleetwood Mac line-up of Fleetwood/McVie/Nicks/McVie/Buckingham. For Mac fans across the country this is a production that will recreate, and allow them to experience, the sound and the feel that was Fleetwood Mac in their prime. Kirsten Elliott has the role of Stevie Nicks, and despite being only 25, has an appreciation of the band’s sound.

know she experimented quite a bit, and thanks to YouTube I have seen hours of her live on stage. “We have researched a lot of the songs and worked out where that song has come from, what emotions went into it, so we like to reflect that in our performance. I love doing ‘Rhiannon’, that’s such a good song to sing. “The one song that really gets to people is ‘Go Your Own Way’, it never fails to get a response,” Kirsten said. “I think so far no members of the real Fleetwood Mac have come to see us. Unless they have turned up in disguise…wouldn’t that be cool? “I was a bit nervous about fans being very judgmental, as they are big shoes to fill, but every show has been great, people get up and just have fun!” The Fleetwood Mac Experience is on at the Ipswich Civic Centre on Friday November 14th. Tickets at www.ipswichciviccentre.com.au

“I think I’ve been blessed to be honest,” Kirsten said. “My dad likes Metallica and Led Zeppelin, while my mum loved Motown, and Carole King, so I’ve grown up listening to everything! “I think people love Fleetwood Mac because their music is not over produced. It’s classic music that people can enjoy. Real guitars, real sounds…not like today’s music when its all about one catchy song and getting it on the radio as soon as possible to have a hit. “ The real band were set to tour last year but suddenly cancelled the tour due to a member of the band being ill, and as this stage, there has been no announcement for new dates. “A lot of people who come to the show tell us they had tickets to the last Fleetwood Mac tour which was cancelled, they are so happy to have a chance to hear these songs live,” Kirsten said. “The show came about as a couple of us were working on a show and we were approached by a promoter about doing a Fleetwood Mac show. They felt there was a demand for a show like this, there are so many die hard fans. “It really is a big tour, and it’s working really well, we are getting such a great response from the crowds. For some reason Australia has always embraced tribute acts, there are heaps around doing AC/DC, Pink, even the original Angels! We love music in this country, it is such a big part of our lives. “I don’t know why we take to tribute bands, maybe its because we all feel a bit left out compared to the rest of the world, or perhaps we are just fun loving people and want to have a good time?” Playing Stevie Nicks is a challenge for any singer, as she is regarded as one of THE great voices in music, despite all her ups and downs. “Playing Stevie Nicks is tricky, a lot of her songs are interesting, and full of emotion. I’ve never been lucky enough to see her live, but I

Enviroplan winners named Amazing images of the beautiful fairy lamp flower, a strikingly alien dragonfly and some beautiful lilies have taken out top prizes at the 2014 Ipswich Enviroplan Photographic Competition. Environment and Conservation Committee Chairperson Councillor Heather Morrow congratulated all the winners in eight categories and invited the public to vote for their favourites for the People’s Choice category. “From over 1,100 entries, 69 have been presented with an award or an honourable mention, and all will be up for the People’s Choice award, decided by the public,” Cr Morrow said. “Photographers of all ages and skill levels have taken part in this challenging and exciting photographic experience. “Whether it’s natural landscapes, flora, fauna, or the Bremer River, entrants have captured the natural beauty of Ipswich in surprising and creative ways.” Winners were announced following lengthy deliberations by renowned photographers Grace Yu and Greg Harm. We have a number of organisations here in Ipswich that consistently punch above their weight in terms of community engagement and outcomes. One such group is FOCAL, an organisation that supports people living with disability, their families and carers. FOCAL recently held its AGM in combination with a formal dinner to celebrate 40 years of service to the Ipswich and greater community. The dinner, which I was privileged to attend, was held at the University of Queensland, Ipswich Campus and was principally held to honour and acknowledge all the people, past and present that FOCAL had worked with and supported over the past 40 years. FOCAL took the opportunity at the event to launch a commemorative book entitled ‘40 years of FOCAL’. The book explores the journey for FOCAL over the past 40 years, from its beginnings at the then Challinor Centre in 1973 to its current location at Canning Street, North Ipswich. The book beautifully outlines how this organisation grew to become the local institution that it is now considered to be. Thirty-three people attended FOCAL’s inaugural AGM, which is a clear indication of how much support this concept had right from the outset.

In fact, interest in forming such an organisation was growing rapidly in the community so “Friends of Challinor Aid League” or FOCAL as we came to know it, was established with a strong executive and a lot of community support. I would like to congratulate and commend all those committee members, from the founding committee with people like Betty McCrindle and Margaret Blakey, right through to today’s committee members very ably led by President Roy Henderson and Vice President, Tony Swords. I also commend Sonja Gilchrist in her role as CEO of FOCAL. Sonja is doing an excellent job managing the current challenges and planning ahead for what is sure to be an exciting and rewarding future for this organisation. You are welcome to come to the Brassall Shopping Centre, just outside my office and meet some of the hardworking team from FOCAL who are one of the local disability service providers participating in my annual Blair Disability Links. The Blair Disability Links will run from 10am to 2pm on Friday 28th November. For more information, call my office on 3201 5300. Kind regards Shayne Neumann, MP

Prepare now for storm season With a few storms passing over Ipswich in the past few weeks, it’s a good time to get ready for the summer storm season.

Bremer Ford at Ebbw Vale have just erected a new 4 metre sign on busy Brisbane Road, highlighting their increased sponsorship with the Luxury Paints Ipswich Jets, even featuring a chalk board section for comments on Jets’ games and post the final scores. Bremer Ford’s Dealer Principal, Wayne Bennett said, “We have been supporting the Jets for a number of years and we feel that they have done a great job in not only winning football matches but also building a real sense of community spirit and support. “They provide us with a great partnership and allow us to promote our brand right across Queensland and even into PNG”. Co-coach of the Jets, Shane Walker said that the increased support from Bremer Ford was greatly appreciated and encouraged more local businesses to get onboard and sign up as sponsors

for the season “Our club is focused on providing opportunities for players and for our supporters. “Everyone who gets involved becomes part of the Jets family and next season is promising to be bigger and better than ever,” Shane said. Ipswich City Council City has set up a website to help residents plan ahead and avoid any damage to their property. There are some precautionary steps you can take to prevent damage occurring from the wind and rain generated by storms. Clearing the leaves from your gutters and valleys is the first step to saving yourself from the heartache of suffering storm damage to your home or property. This will help to ensure that water does not back up in the gutters and end up entering the ceiling of houses. The second step involves inspecting the roof. It is important that your roof is wellmaintained to stop any water entering your home.” Other vital checks involved securing all loose objects in the yard such as outdoor furniture and always removing dead branches or vegetation. Householders also need to create an emergency plan and prepare an emergency kit with items such as a battery-operated radio, bottled water and a torch with spare batteries. Ipswich City Council will again be taking part in October in the Get Ready Queensland campaign designed to encourage South-East Queensland residents to become storm savvy. Cr Cheryl Bromage said residents needed to ensure that they were as prepared as possible for all types of adverse weather condition. “Unfortunately many people do not prepare their properties against impending disasters such as storms, floods and other natural disasters. “Hopefully we will be spared any major weather events this year but it is always better to be prepared just in case.” There is a wealth of information to help people prepare for emergencies was available from council’s website at www.ipswich.qld.gov.au/residents/

emergency_management “Information listed includes evacuation plans, emergency plans, emergency kits, home preparations and pet emergency plans. “I urge all residents to take the time to visit this site and work through the various checklists there to ensure they are well prepared. “Being unprepared can lead to unnecessary property damage and heartache.” Cr Bromage said the checklists available on council’s website were also available in 15 different languages including Indonesian, Arabic, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, French, Samoan, Greek, Hindi, Hmong, Punjabi, Spanish, Portuguese and Vietnamese. This website also contains a full list of emergency contacts to assist residents.” Cr Bromage said residents should also ensure they kept the phone number for the State Emergency Service (SES) in a prominent place which is 132 500. For more information about floods, storms and other natural disasters, residents should also visit the Ipswich SES website at www. ipswichses.net.au/

Fashion came to the Ipswich Civic Centre for the Ipswich Fashion Festival Gala evening, hosted by renowned fashion presenter Pam Tamblyn. Local and national designers took part in a spectacular evening that celebrated the diversity of fashion, beauty, and creative innovations. The judges - Vanessa Hoe (When Freddie Met Lilly), Leigh Buchanan (Leigh Buchanan Design) and our own Mayoress Janet Pisasale had a difficult task in identifying the winners. Lauren Smith won both the Casual and Formal Categories of the PFAFF Student Design Awards, while Kyrstal Roles won the Wearable Art Category and Tory Scotson took out the Social / Environmental Category. Sue Flewell-Smith was the overall winner in the Emerge Australia Aspire Design Award (pictured right with her models wearing her creations). As we go to print, ‘Fashions in the Limelight’ is on at Riverlink and this weekend there’s ‘Kitsch in the Swich’ in the Ipswich Mall. Look out for pictures from these events in the next edition of IpswichLife.

Win tickets to comedy play Entertaining Angels, a sharp and witty comedy, which first played at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2006 starring Penelope Keith, is the entertaining choice for the last play of this year for Ipswich Little Theatre. With the loss of her beloved vicar husband, Grace knows her life will change forever. The new vicar, a woman, and her husband are already examining the house. After so many years of being the dutiful and busy vicar’s wife she is now without a husband, a home and a purpose in life. Her eccentric missionary sister has arrived from Africa to support her and her daughter, as well, but their efforts have little effect on Grace. The story is one of grief, regret, lack of communication in a family and buried secrets surfacing but laughter bubbles to the surface in this funny, touching and genuinely thoughtprovoking comedy. Set in a classic English vicarage garden, directed by Jan Paterson and with the talented cast of Pam Floris, Jim Orr, Autumn Barn, Brooke Stitt and Kate Mallory, this play promises a great night at the unique and historic Incinerator Theatre. Entertaining Angels commences a 14 performance season with fundraising Theatre Nights from November 17. The public nights are November 28 & 29, December 5 & 6, with a matinee session on November 30 at 2pm.

Booking is essential either on-line at ipswichlittletheatre.com.au or at the Ipswich Visitor Information Centre (3281 0555). Below: Autumn Barn, Brooke Stitt, and Kate Mallory during rehearsals for ‘Entertainaing Angels’

With Sean Choat MP MEMBER FOR IPSWICH WEST

It has been a busy time since my last column with a number of initiatives, from assisting businesses to hire apprentices to increased security staff on public transport. Apprenticeship Pledge Employers in Ipswich West are being encouraged to sign up to employ extra apprentices and receive a $6000 bonus from the Queensland Government with one local business pledging to hire 20 additional apprentices. I was involved in Apprentice training for over 20 years before being elected so I know employers make an important contribution to the region’s thriving economy. I commend organisations like Apprenticeships Queensland and TAFE South West who provide ongoing local training and employment opportunities to people of all ages who want to get a trade. Demand for Get Started vouchers strong The Newman Government’s Get Started program has been a great success, providing families with vouchers worth up to $150 to get kids who can least afford it into sport. The latest round of the Get Started program will help more than 13,500 children and young people join a sport or recreation club state-wide. More than 38 per cent of applicants who received a voucher said they had not played club sport previously, which is exactly what we’re trying to achieve – getting kids active. It is very pleasing that this latest round has seen 274 vouchers issued to deserving kids in my electorate of Ipswich West. I am very happy to see more and more participation in local sport. For more information on Get Started, visit: www.nprsr.qld. gov.au/funding/getinthegame/ getstarted

Funding Boost for Cycling Ipswich West cyclists will enjoy a safer, more direct journey following a $320,000 boost to local bicycle infrastructure and signage. The Newman Government has awarded Ipswich City Council funding to deliver two projects for stage four of the Brassall Bikeway and new signage. Building better infrastructure and planning for our growing state’s needs is part of our strong plan for a brighter future. The Brassall Bikeway is a vital link which not only delivers a dedicated facility for cyclists but will also encourage more people to cycle more often, including young families. Security on Public Transport Boosted Public transport passengers travelling by bus and train in Ipswich will benefit from extra security thanks to a boost from the Queensland Government. 18 additional Senior Network Officers will be trained and deployed on the local network by mid-2015. We’re making public transport safer for passengers, with this extra security boost a part of our strong plan to make this state the safest place to travel in Australia. The boost to security will mean by 2015, 70 Senior Network Officers will be protecting passengers on the SEQ network.

NEWS Brisbane Lions in Springfield still possible Ipswich City Council says it remains determined to secure funding for a new community sport facility planned for a site next to Springfield Central train station at an estimated cost of $30 million to house the Brisbane Lions. The previously announced high performance training and administration facility would have the Brisbane Lions AFL team as a tenant. It has moved a step closer with applications being finalised for $20 million funding from state and federal governments. Mayor Paul Pisasale said Ipswich should be the number one choice for the Lions with planning well advanced for the new base. “Already some $20 million has been invested in infrastructure surrounding the site, including access to the train station. Joint funding of $8.5 million from Ipswich City Council and Springfield Land Corporation has been confirmed. “Ipswich City Council has also made applications for funding of $10 million through the Queensland Government’s Royalties to Regions Program and $10 million from the Australian Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund,” Cr Pisasale said. Cr David Morrison said the new centre would bring a significant boost to sporting facilities for the entire south west corridor of Brisbane. “This once in a generation sports facility will benefit future generations of athletes and sports fans and is a significant infrastructure project for the region. The main stadium will feature facilities for community use and future stages include a new aquatic centre,” Cr Morrison said.

Skye needs our support Have you ever had a bad week? One of those weeks when nothing went right. Well no matter what happened, chances are it wasn’t as bad as the week that Skye Coffey from Lowood had recently. Bad news has turned a 34 year old mum of two into a fighter. Hopefully, Skye will rise from the canvas to deliver a knockout blow, but she needs our help. “I woke up one Sunday night thinking I had a pain in my appendix, so the next day I went to the doctor,” Skye said. “They did an ultrasound, then a CT scan, and then sent me straight back to the doctor. She sat me down and told me I had Stage 3 breast and liver cancer. I had to go for biopsies the very next day. The day after, my husband Matt and I took our kids onto a jumping castle for a bit of fun, and Matt had a stroke. “This is all the space of a couple of days!” Matt was in hospital for two weeks and is now home on sick leave. “There is no history of this in our family,” Matt said. “Turns out the inner lining of one of my veins had weakened, and a small clot dislodged which caused my stroke. One minute I’m in a jumping castle, then I got out and had double vision. I just had to sit down. Next thing I’m in an ambulance and I’m being told I’ve had a stroke.” Skye’s first concern was for Matt, and now he’s home, attention turns to getting the treatment that she needs, but there’s a catch. “The specialists have recommended a new chemotherapy treatment as they said it will be the most effective for this form of cancer… the drug targets the infection. “I have to raise $13,000 which will get me four treatments. If it works, they will then release it to me on the PBS which will be free. This treatment only targets the areas where the cancer elements are, and it means that I will be on some form of medication for the rest of my life, but because it’s a new drug that hasn’t been yet, I have to raise the cash to get it now. “They are hoping to release it on the PBS in the

What’s on LIVE @ the Ipswich Civic Centre and Studio188 in November One of the highlights this month at the Civic Centre is the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s presentation of Orchestral Favourites – Great German Classics, featuring some of the most popular orchestral works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Hummel and Beethoven. As with our other hero events for the year your ticket includes a FREE program, pre-performance talk and pre-show entertainment in the foyer, while the Chef will prepare traditional German fare complete with wines and beer. Studio 188 will present the fabulous guitar and voice duo, stringmansassy. Refined, sophisticated performers and unique arrangers of every musical genre,

stringmansassy transcend their roots of jazz and folk to create a music that has been described as spellbinding, enthralling and passionate. November will also see Studio 188 playing host to The Babbling Trillbillys and their new not-to-be-missed show, The Janet and Joy of Christmas. With glitz, glam, pizzazz even a Royal Christmas message - promise to make this the perfect prelude to that special time of year. Visit www.ipswichcivicentre.com.au or www.studio188.com.au or call 07 3810 6100 during office hours. And if you buy online before you arrive on the evening, prices to ALL Studio shows will be even cheaper!

next twelve months., but without it I will have to have the old form of chemo which is more aggressive and will take more of a toll on my body. If I can get this new drug, I can still be a mum and look after my family. A friend of Skye’s has set up a fund on the ‘My Cause’ website and the Lowood couple is grateful for all the support. “She’s set up a raffle too, its amazing the support we are getting from the community, we’ve honestly been blown away. We’re hoping the Mater will take a deposit on the treatment, so we can raise the rest of the money. “It takes something like this to show how close you are to family and friends, not to mention the support of the community. We’ve received support from Ipswich, Esk, Lowood and Toogoolawah,” Skye said. Below: The Coffey family from Lowood - Skye, Matt, Lillian and Oscar

Under the Bonnet is a series of community workshops being coordinated by Ipswich District Crime Prevention in partnership with the Queensland Police Railway Squad and local car dealerships throughout November to help raise women’s personal and road safety awareness. Local women are invited to attend an evening seminar where core concepts of personal safety will be discussed along with road safety information associated with driving on Queensland roads and using public transport. Ipswich District Crime Prevention Officer Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy said the initiative was important so women felt confident and safe in all situations. “Hopefully the women become more aware of their surroundings and assess their environment to recognise potential risks, maybe even subconsciously,” Senior Constable Sheedy said. “This should develop into an instinct which will hopefully guide them away from harm in the future.” The personal and road safety talk leads into a workshop about car maintenance for modern vehicles. The women will watch demonstrations on how to check the oil levels and water, and have a hands-on approach to changing a flat tyre. The workshops are conducted at major car dealers around Ipswich with vehicles available for demonstrations and qualified mechanical staff able to provide information and advise the group. “Some women from the previous presentations

didn’t even know how to pop the hood at the beginning of the workshop so many find this valuable,” Senior Constable Sheedy said. “The knowledge will empower the women and give them the confidence to undertake basic car maintenance which will hopefully reduce the possibility of being stranded on the roadside due to mechanical problems.” The two workshops will be held on: • Wednesday November 12, 6.30pm at Llewellyn Motors, 246 Brisbane Road, Booval. • Tuesday November 18, 6.30pm at Boettcher Motors, 1 Herbert Street Bundamba. For more information or to register your attendance for the Under the Bonnet – Safer Driving for Women, please contact the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit at the Yamanto police complex on 3817 1351 or email dcpc.ipswich@police.qld. gov.au. GIVEAWAYS Target: Italy

The Secret War Against Mussolini, 1940-1943 by Roderick Bailey Drawing on long-classified documents, this is the official history of the war waged by Britain’s Special Operations Executive on Benito Mussolini’s Fascist Italy. Told for the very first time, it is a compelling tale of desperate daring and sacrifice, uncovering missions as remarkable as a plot to assassinate Mussolini and plans to arm the Mafia. It climaxes in one of the most extraordinary clandestine episodes of the war: the delicate and dramatic dealings between the Allies and the Italians that led to Italy’s surrender in 1943. This is the first full account of SOE’s clandestine efforts to strike at Fascist Italy and sever its alliance with Nazi Germany. It is also the first in-depth history of SOE’s attempts at causing trouble inside an enemy country as opposed to an enemy-occupied one. (Allen & Unwin)

By Air Commodore John Oddie As a farm boy in western Victoria, John Oddie would watch RAAF jets pass overhead as he ploughed hay fields, wondering what it would be like to fly such a machine. Thirty-five years later - having flown Hueys, Chinooks, Hercules, jets and C-17s in a range of operations — John had risen to the rank of Air Commodore. John’s appointment as deputy commander of Aussie forces in the Middle East capped a remarkable career of service to Australia. Sadly, this honour also involved the heartbreaking duty of informing families of the deaths of their husbands and sons in Afghanistan and overseeing departure ceremonies for the fallen soldiers. As well as covering the war in Afghanistan, Flight Command provides an insider’s account of being a combat pilot in the first Gulf War, a commander supporting peace in Bougainville and security in Cambodia and the often harrowing experience of being a first-response commander dealing with the aftermath of the Boxing Day tsunami in Indonesia.

In The Company Of Cowards

By Michael Mori Having grown up as an all-American boy, Mori joined the US Marine Corps as an eighteenyear-old, determined to give his life order and to serve the country he held dear. After training and serving as a military lawyer, he accepted a position as a defence counsel for the military commissions set up in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. And then David Hicks’s case file landed on his desk. A firm believer in the importance of due process, Mori grew increasingly alarmed by how the military and the US and Australian governments were handling the Hicks case, and others like it. Why was a distinction being made between ‘unlawful combatants’ and ‘prisoners of war’? Why was the Australian government refusing to intervene for one of its people? And what specific crime – if any – had Hicks allegedly committed that deserved years of incarceration without trial? What followed was a long struggle for justice, and one man’s gradual disillusionment with the institution that he had signed up to fight for.

The Lost Legions of Fromelles

By Peter Barton The action at Fromelles in July 1916 is Australia’s most catastrophic military failure. The story has always appeared simple, but in truth history did not unfold in the way we have for so long been led to believe. Peter Barton has written an authoritative and revelatory book on Fromelles. He describes its long and surprising genesis, and offers an unexpected account of the fighting; he investigates the interrogation of Anglo-Australian prisoners, and the results of shrewd German propaganda techniques; and he explores the circumstances surrounding the ‘missing’ Pheasant Wood graves. He also brings a new perspective to the writings of Charles Bean. (Allen & Unwin)

Dog Eat Dog

By Michael Browning A fascinating insider’s account of the formation and early success of two of the world’s greatest bands, AC/DC and INXS from the man who helped them on the road to international stardom. Michael Browning first spotted AC/DC in September 1974. They were raw and rough, and much of the crowd, Michael included, was bewildered by the flashy guitarist dressed as a school kid. But Michael knew they had something — a blistering sound, killer songs and a wildly charismatic stage presence. Within a week he’d signed them to a management contract and duly embarked on a shared journey that within five years would take them to international prominence. (Allen & Unwin)

NOW THAT’S

ENTERTAINMENT WHAT’SON Talking Beer WITH TIM AT THE PA HOTEL

With the growth and expansion of the craft beer industry, its getting increasingly harder to keep up to date with what’s new and happening, especially since we’re in Queensland and all the movers and shakers in the Aussie craft beer world tend to be based in other states. So it brings a smile to my dial when one of these movers and shakers decides to bring their beer to Queensland. The latest brewery to catch my eye is Rocks Brewing Company out of Sydney. Established in late 2008, they have made a name for themselves both with their core range of beers and their limited releases. One particular beer in their core range has caught my eye - The Hangman Pale Ale. I am a big fan of beer with a story and this beers tale is one of my favourites - the brewery is run by fifth- and sixth-generation convict descendants who are proud as punch of their shared

criminal heritage. The Hangman Pale Ale is named after Alexander Green, who was the Hangman of Old Sydney Gaol for 27 years and was responsible for putting 490 people on the noose - a popular bloke I bet. This brash American-style pale ale is loaded with aroma and flavour. Upon pouring you are immediately greeted with floral aromas of rose petal and violet with subtle but unmistakable hints of stone fruit and grassy citrus. Rich golden in colour, the flavours of Munich and Caramel Pils malts are balanced by a healthy whack of hop bitterness which extends to a clean refreshing finish. If you would like to try this beer for yourself it will be on tap at Char’d Steakhouse at the Prince Alfred Hotel, Booval as part of their Craft Beer Revolution which includes many other craft beers which are new to the venue. Cheers, Tim

‘Globemasters’ cycle for charity Personnel from No 36 Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley have cycled for charity, raising money for medical research. Members of the airlift squadron formed a team called the ‘Globemasters’ to take part in the Great Cycle Challenge. They joined other teams in cycling an equivalent distance to around the globe (40,075 km). The marathon ride was to raise funds for The Children's Medical Research Institute. This massive national enterprise, involving

6,866 riders who have cycled the equivalent of three times around the globe (1,362,455 km) have raised to date $1,895,291. C-17 delivers Australia’s first MH-60R to Navy The first of Australia’s newest helicopter type, the MH-60R ‘Romeo’ Seahawk, has been delivered by a 36 Squadron C-17 to HMAS Albatross at Nowra, NSW. This begins a delivery schedule for 24 of the combat helicopters manufactured in the United States by Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky. The entire fleet is expected to be delivered by 2017. Under a $3 billion deal with the US Navy, Australia aims to increase its anti-submarine warfare capability (ASW) with the advanced technology MH-60R. With dipping sonar capability for anti-submarine operations and as a platform for the AGM-114 Hellfire missile and Raytheon Mk54 torpedo, the new ‘Romeo’ class Seakawks are a step-up in ASW capability. They will eventually replace an ageing Sikorsky S-70 Seahawk fleet that has been in service for more than 20 years. The MH-60R delivery follows air worthiness test flights at the US Navy’s air station in Jacksonville in Florida, where members of the RAN’s 816 Squadron personnel have been training. In Australia, once this first ‘Romeo’ has been reassembled and ground tests are complete, further flight testing will take place from HMAS Albratross in the coming weeks. 816 Squadron is scheduled to return to Australia in December, to be formally commissioned as 725 Squadron. The squadron has had a head start in reaching Initial Operating Capability with the MH-60R, as

training for pilots, aviation warfare officers and maintainers has been underway with the US Navy’s ‘NUSQN725’ since first acceptance in December 2013. To date, five RAN aircraft have been deliverd to Jacksonville. In RAN service, the MH-60Rs will operate from the Navy’s Anzac class frigates and the new Hobart class air warfare destroyers and LHDs (Landing Helicopter Dock). Above: The first MH-60R ‘Romeo’ Seahawk delivered to HMAS Albatross by a RAAF C-17A of 36 Squadron. MONEY & PROPERTY

this. If nothing else, it’s a reminder to property investors that they must do their own homework and invest wisely regardless of what official interest rates are doing. With an investment property you are interested in a good location and access to infrastructure such as schools, shops, railway stations and playing parks. And you are also interested in average rentals and some historical data on rental yields. But the first step in a good investment is buying well. This means, not just paying a good price for the year – but a good price for the 10 to 20 years you want to generate income off this property. If you pay too much you’ll lose on capital appreciation and it will take longer to generate clear funds from the rent. It’s one thing to get carried away at an auction and pay too much for the house you love, but an investment property is a business that must earn income and capital growth for many years. So keep a cool head. The other element mentioned by the RBA – that they expect the Aussie dollar to fall further against the US – is something that might give a boost to our economy. When our dollar was at parity with the US, Aussie exports were expensive and local manufacturers found it hard to compete in foreign markets. Now that our dollar is at .85¢ - and expected to fall further – our non-mining economy has a chance to pick up, expand and create jobs. So don’t be alarmed at the lack of big headlines from the Reserve Bank this month. A steady economy is a great thing when you consider the alternative. MATTERS

The more things change... BY MARK BOURIS

It’s probably a sign of how stable our economy is that we wait for the slightest change in wording when the Reserve Bank decides on the cash rate. Recently the RBA board met and decided to keep official interest rate at 2.5 per cent – not only a historically low rate compared to the 5.2 per cent average since 1990, but also a rate that’s been kept the same since August 2013. But it was the way the RBA governor expressed himself on property prices and the Australian dollar that is worth looking at during the remainder of the year and into 2015. Firstly, for more than a month we’ve heard strong commentary from economists about unhealthy price inflation in the property market, driven by low interest rates. Some of the comment has predicted an end to negative gearing. I haven’t joined this discussion because lenders’ figures don’t suggest a problem in the property market, and the Bureau of Statistics’ House Price Index series shows we are just slightly above the Index average since 2002. The RBA governor in his statement did mention investment property: “Credit growth is moderate overall, but with a further pick-up in recent months in lending to investors in housing assets.” I think Governor Stevens was right to address the property market with a bland statement like

Hyundai Genesis breaks records The Hyundai Genesis had received the highest safety score in ANCAP history. The ‘Overall’ score of 36.88 points out of 37 is a record in 21-year ANCAP testing history. ANCAP Chairman Mr Lauchlan McIntosh praised Genesis for its standard suite of safety technologies, including Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) Genesis safety features also fitted as standard include: nine passenger airbags, pre-safe seat belt system, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control A 5 star safety rating is ANCAP’s ultimate measure of vehicle safety protection for occupants and pedestrians. The demanding assessment includes a 64km/h frontal offset test and a 50km/h side impact test, along with a 29km/h pole test, a whiplash test simulating a 32km/h rear-end crash, and a 40km/h pedestrian impact protection test.

A minimum number of active safety assist technologies (SATs) is also required. Structural integrity and strength has been a key priority of Hyundai Motor Company’s engineering teams since development of the new ‘DH’ model Genesis sedan began six years ago. The vehicle uses advanced high-strength steel throughout its body structure, and has been designed from the outset to pass the world’s most demanding crash tests. The Genesis will be launched in Australia next month. For info on this and all things Hyundai contact local dealer Llewellyn Hyundai on 3282 2922.

Black is the new black! Toyota has added an edgy new style to the ruggedness of Australia’s best-selling four-wheel-drive with the unveiling of a special-edition model dubbed ‘HiLux Black’. New for this version of the “unbreakable” HiLux is the combination of brooding black side steps, sports bar and leather-accented interior trim including the six-way adjustable power-operated driver’s seat. Even the newly designed 17-inch alloy wheels are painted black behind their brightly machined six-spoke facades. Prominent new front and rear bumpers, never previously offered in Australia, give the HiLux Black a lower, more planted stance — a powerful look accentuated by black extensions below the fog light surrounds. Maintaining the model’s moody theme is a large black lower front grille that features a stylish red stripe along the bottom edge. LED daylight running lamps are specified for the first time on a HiLux in Australia. Enthusiasts will appreciate the involvement of Toyota’s global partner TRD for cosmetic enhancements with its familiar logo appearing on the wheel caps and the front bumper extension. With fewer than 1,000 being produced, the HiLux Black is based on the SR5 4x4 Double Cab pickup and attracts the maximum fivestar safety rating. The special-edition model is powered

exclusively by Toyota’s torquey 3.0-litre fourcylinder turbo-diesel engine, mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or the fivespeed automatic transmission introduced earlier this year. The extensive feature list includes a reversing camera and a satellite navigation* system with SUNA Live Traffic updates — all viewed on the 6.1-inch display audio screen. The colour choice is black and white — literally, as Toyota has chosen Eclipse Black and Glacier White as the only exterior paint options for the special-edition model. Equally as stark is the black-and-white sales dominance HiLux enjoys among local customers. HiLux is the best-selling vehicle of its type and ranks third on the best-seller list for all vehicles in Australia. In 4x4 guise, its sales have topped 20,000 this year — a lead of more than 5,000 sales over its nearest competitor. In the 4x2 Pick up/Cab chassis market, HiLux sales are running more than 3,500 vehicles ahead of its closest rivals.
