It was the TV event that had the entire nation talking last year, and in this issue it was great to once again talk with Matthew Le Nevez about the death of his character Patrick in Offspring, and about shootinf scenes for one last time as the show returns on May 14. Also in this issue we spoke with Kylie Kwong, a chef who is renowned all over the country for her skills, about her role in the new series of MasterChef. Keep calm and cook Back on TV screens this week is the most popular and successful cooking show in Australian history, as MasterChef sets out to once again find the best home cook in the nation. A new addition to the show this year is Kylie Kwong, one of most recognisable and best loved chefs in the nation. With pressure on the producers to return to the ratings of previous years, a focus on the ‘best home cook’ format is a step in the right direction for the show which has revolutionised our attitude to dining. “I will be on the show regularly over about 12 to 14 episodes and it’s my role to nurture contestants, bring my food knowledge to the table and share my restaurant experience,” Kylie told Ipswich Life from the show’s set. “It’s really about encouraging them to bring out the best in themselves especially when they are under such intense pressure. One of my main roles is to keep them calm, and I love being a bit mother to everybody. I’m enjoying it so much, it’s such a positive environment. “I’ve always loved the show, and even when people are eliminated it’s done in a gentle way, and they walk out of there with tools for their life, with that experience under their belt.” Kylie has been a fan of the show since day one, and knows what it can be like working under such pressure, something that only gets easier with experience. “Chaos reigns in the Masterchef kitchen, and
quite often there is just food everywhere. I take their hands, look into their eyes and remind them to keep breathing, remember what’s on the line and to keep going. I try to stay calm myself and hope it rubs off on them during challenges. “I also get flustered in the kitchen, it’s such high pressure, but I’ve learnt that such frustration causes panic and I’ve used different skills to recentre myself, and to feel my feet on the ground. If you get into a panicked state you lose control and I try to get them to focus, take a deep breath and keep going. “I like that role as a mentor, I’m there to help them through. It’s a very complimentary role to the three guys (Matt, Gary and George) on the show, who all have such an amazing food knowledge.” In recent years the show has had finales which have commanded viewers in the millions, and has produced household names like Julie Goodwin, Adam Liaw, and others who didn’t win, but have flourished, like Marion Grasby, Justine Schofield and Callum Hann. Kylie knows what it will take for someone to step up and win the title of Australia’s next MasterChef.
“Apart from having a good knowledge of food and techniques, and remember they learn so much of that on the show….it takes inner fortitude and belief in yourself. . “It takes confidence that you can do it, and move to the next challenge. This year is really challenging, each year the entrants get better and better, so the producers of the show have to keep raising the bar to keep pushing themselves, and produce such amazing food.” As a chef in the public eye, Kylie feels that her role is to share her knowledge with Australia. “Its not an obligation at all, its how I wish to conduct my life, all part of my values. It only makes me happy to share knowledge. It comes down to a bit of ‘duty of care’, in some ways. For me it is all about serving the community, how I can serve it better, and being on Masterchef gives me that chance. I want to be part of projects that are uplifting and engaging. “I don’t want to be this untouchable person on TV, it’s the reason why the show is screened in 95 countries and has inspired people to cook amazing food. It’s such a positive thing.
“Of course I’ve seen dishes that even I thought I can’t cook. You’ll see so many styles of cooking in this series. There is such a wide range of cooking skills and backgrounds in this series, I’m learning so much, I feel so envigorated at the moment because I’m surrounded with such passion for food!” We couldn’t resist asking if Brit chef MarcoPierre White is as scary in real life as on TV. “On no! Marco is absolutely gorgeous. I’ve cooked for him at a friends home in London… he is simply wonderful and charming. But wait till you see the contestant’s faces when he walks on set, it was gold.” With the show’s return to the ‘home cook search’ format, Kylie is glad the show is getting back to basics. “I think that’s what we all want, to go back to finding the nation’s best home cook… people who love beautiful home cooking. Great flavours, tastes and passion…that’s what MasterChef is all about.” MasterChef is back for 2014 this week on Network Ten or on Tenplay.com.au

Ipswich appoints new ambassador in U.S. Business, educational, cultural, sporting and tourism opportunities in Ipswich are being promoted within America by the city’s newest ambassador. Mayor Paul Pisasale said council had decided to appoint Emily Tanski as an Honorary Business and Cultural Ambassador for the City of Ipswich for promotional activities specific to the United States of America. Cr Pisasale said Ms Tanski was currently a Youth Ambassador for the City of Ipswich and had been successfully fulfilling this role since she was a Rotary exchange student to Ipswich. “Emily is about to turn 30, so we feel it is
appropriate that she is appointed Honorary Business and Cultural Ambassador to promote Ipswich internationally,’ Cr Pisasale said. “The appointment of Ms Tanski is based on building on her role as a youth ambassador and significant experience in international business and exposure to marketing and promotional opportunities in America. “Ms Tanski lives full time in Washington, DC where she works as a physician assistant for a neurosurgical group in Virginia Neurosurgeons Hospital Centre in Arlington. “This gives us the benefit of having someone living in the US who is able to identify
opportunities for Ipswich and who can promote the city’s many opportunities.” Cr Pisasale said Ms Tanski’s appointment was part of the concerted effort to pursue and promote global awareness of Ipswich. “We see appointments such as this as a way in which we can initiate and maintain strong ties with a number of countries. “I look forward to the many positive outcomes it will have for the city and its relationship with the US. I’m sure it will help to continue to strengthen and build on existing business links and cultural relationships between Ipswich and the US.”

Busy, busy, busy... The past month has been a busy time in the Ipswich Electorate, with visits from both the Minister for Energy and Water Supply, Mark McArdle and the Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie. We held the first of our series of Community Forums with Minister McArdle talking to residents about the Cost of Living and in particular the costs of power and water. ANZAC Day is a special day for Australians and our New Zealand compatriots and I was delighted to attend five services on ANZAC Day and local state schools in the week preceding ANZAC day. The month of May looks to be another busy month and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to meet as many residents as possible at my mobile office at the Ipswich Show from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 May. I would encourage constituents to come along and have a chat about their issues. No show would be complete without Lamingtons and this year Jacaranda Clubhouse are doing the baking for me and I will be donating the funds raised from our Lamington gold-coin donation to Ipswich Hospice. The Minister for Education, Training and Employment, John-Paul Langbroek, will be hosting a roundtable discussion with Principals of all the schools in the Ipswich and Ipswich West Electorates. These forums let the Government hear the views of our leaders in local education on matters of importance and discuss any concerns they are facing in their schools. And of course, don’t forget to do something special for your Mum on Mother’s Day on Sunday, 11 May…

Lions facility gains extension Ipswich City Council will continue to work with the Brisbane Lions and the Springfield Land Corporation to establish a new high performance training and administration facility at Springfield. Deputy Mayor Victor Attwood said the Lions hoped to establish the new elite training and administration facility adjacent to the new Springfield Central train station. Under original plans, an existing Heads of Agreement pledged that the group would work together to secure funding sources for the project by the end of June this year. He said the challenge with a project such as this was securing the required funding in a timely manner. “The parties have a funding advocacy strategy in place but more time is required to achieve the desired outcome” he said. “The parties have been advised that new government funding programs will be available in early 2015. “An extension to the timeframe to secure funding from June 30 this year to June 30, 2015 will allow these programs to be accessed. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said Council was looking forward to welcoming the Brisbane Lions’ training centre to Ipswich. “Council is doing everything in its power to

Is Patrick back in ‘Offspring’? The death of Patrick on ‘Offspring’ (right) was an amazing part of TV history, drawing comparisons to the death of ‘Molly’ on ‘A Country Practice’… a moment that thousands will never forget, and caused a social media meltdown. So what now for the actor, and the character? really rare for an actor to do and it made me realise how special it all is. “Being involved in something, being fully aware at that time of how special something is…is quite rare for me. Normally you do a job and wait a year for it to come out, but with this I knew all along it wasn’t going to happen again, so in many ways it was sad, especially being amongst so many good friends. “The new series picks up six months later, and it was great to play a character that exists between fantasies and memories. It honestly was a joy to do. Offspring has such a unique energy. It’s light, its fun, and I know there aren’t too many shows that can make you laugh and cry in the space of ten minutes. I guess that’s why people love the show so much.” Le Nevez was in Ipswich late last year filming the telemovie ‘Parer’s War’ which featured our city throughout. After getting the role on that movie, Le Nevez decided to do something to get him ready, and that came in the shape of Kokoda. “I did Kokoda after I got the role, as I was keen to do it. It was amazing, it’s such a spiritual experience. You don’t realise the effect it has on you. I came away with such a kinship with the PNG locals. People I did it with have become dear friends, and there is such a bond between our two countries. Once you hit the track you’re off the grid. No phone, no electricity….its a great way to spend a week I’d recommend it to anyone.” A cricket tragic, Matthew spent a lot of the American winter at his LA home watching the cricket online. “There’s a YouTube channel that streams games to the US, and I watched every session of the Ashes. My mate Brad Hadden organised tickets for me but I just couldn’t get there. I even watched the tests in South Africa, the end of the last test was something special. It’s a lot of hours online, but I hooked up the pc to the plasma so that made it easier. “I’m banging on doors in L.A. and getting close to jobs, but it looks like I’ll be back home in mid-year, its something exciting I’m looking forward to announcing.“ Offspring Season 5 returns May 14 on Ten

The death of Matthew Le Nevez’s character caused such a reaction that it was the number one topic on social media and in every café, office and home around the country. It was a reaction that blew away the actor, and left an entire nation to ask the question ‘Why Patrick...why?’ “I don’t think anyone on the show expected such a reaction to Patrick’s death,” Matthew said. “Nobody at all expected that… it was quite surreal. I was on the Gold Coast in the last week of filming the finale of ‘Parer’s War’ (see last issue of Ipswich Life) at the time. “To be an actor and experience that… it doesn’t happen very often, it was very humbling. In this industry things don’t always work out the way you want them to, but to be on this show and share the public outcry over his death with the cast and crew… sharing that… it was something we were all very proud of. It meant so much to the fans, it makes you feel very lucky. “I often watch it with my mum and dad, but I watched that particular episode with Lachy Hulme (the Logie winning actor from ‘Offspring’ and ‘Howzat!’) and we all had kept it secret for so long. “Everyone worked really hard on that, I was really pleased with how it turned out.” Matthew will return to the show this year, as the lead character Nina (Asher Keddie) will conjure up Patrick through her dreams. “The whole season is finished filming, we began in November and finished in February. I am in quite a part of it, as there was always an opportunity for me to stay in the show. There was such a chance to explore my character in this series, with Nina’s memories and fantasies, whether it was plot driven or something offbeat. “I know when we started to plot Patrick’s passing two years ago there was always going to be a possibility of her remembering him in this way. “I will miss the fun and the family atmosphere the most. Double Bill set to please audiences Ipswich Audiences are in for a treat throughout May when two absorbing and entertaining plays under the title “Double Bill” take to The Incinerator stage. “A New York Minute” is directed by Phil McCormack and features Julie- Ann Wright and Tony Erhardt. Melisa and Harry have been best friends since college days. When Harry dies and Melissa is packing up his apartment she makes an important discovery about her own life. This acclaimed play is an intense mix of comedy and drama. “A Day to Remember”, written and directed by Ian and Helen Pullar, is set in a small Queensland town in 1954 (below). The four members of a rural family share their innermost feelings about the major events in their lives. Their stories are funny, poignant, sad and inspiring and will reveal to audiences why, for each of them, Anzac Day has such significance. An accomplished cast of Charles Costello, Jane Sheppard, Renee England and Amy Brody-Provost has been assembled by Ipswich Little Theatre to bring to life the truths and secrets of this family and the close-knit community in which they live. In 2013 “A Day to Remember” was a major prize winner in the Toowoomba Repertory Company One Act Play Script competition.

Super Hornets show capability with ‘Harpoon’ missile
F/A-18F Super Hornet crews at 1 Squadron have confirmed the aircraft’s capability to carry the AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missile, used in the maritime strike role. “Maritime Strike using the sea-skimming Harpoon missile is one of the Super Hornet’s many capabiliities as a multi-role fighter attack aircraft,” said Officer Commanding 82 Wing, Group Captain ‘Micka’ Gray. “The flight was a ‘load and carry‘ exercise rather than specific training for missions that the Super Hornet may be tasked to do. “It was a confirmation flight that we could carry the missile and integrate it with the onboard weapon delivery systems,” GPCAPT Gray said.
“At this stage we don’t intend to conduct live firings of the missile, but on the major exercises the Super Hornets could be part of maritime strike packages.” Harpoon has been an important part maritime operations for many years. In various configurations the missile can be launched from fixed-wing aircraft such as AP3C Orion and the two fighter variants. Using a sold-fuel rocket booster, the missile can be launched off surface ships and underwater from submarines. Take my advice on financial education It’s easy to look at a financial system and ask the government to make it fair. But what if our system was fair? What if the laws and regulations provided for an even playing field so everyone was able to build financial security and create wealth for retirement? I’ve written about the need for financial education in our schools, but we also have to educate ourselves. I’d like to see more people using advisers to make financial decisions. Most working-age Australians do not use advisers, even though they are contributing to a mandatory superannuation system that puts a percentage of earnings into investments. Research over the years shows us that no more than 40 per cent of Australians use financial advisers on more than a one-off basis. This is low when you consider that individuals really should carry the responsibility of funding their own retirements. Advisers usually produce greater wealth for clients. KPMG Econtech’s 2009 survey found that Australians with advisers would save more than $1500 per year more than those without advisers. A person with an adviser, if they started at age 30, would be at least $90,000 better off by age 65 than a person who was not advised. Those with an adviser had more life insurance and Total &
Permanent Disablement insurance than those without an adviser. The Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) goes further. In its 2010 report into financial advisers, ASIC says access to quality financial advice is part of “confident and informed participation by Australians in the financial system.” There have been a few ideas floated on how to lift the use of financial advisers. One could be to make financial adviser fees tax deductible to a certain level. Another allowed advisers to give low-cost, basic advice. As far back as 2009 super fund trustees were allowed to give what they call intra-fund advice – financial advice to their own members. Many fund managers have tried to introduce their members to the concept of advice. My company is going one step further by launching an “Ask My Advice” Day in which our branches will open their doors for the day so anyone can come in and ask their questions and get some advice for free. It’s in response to people telling me that they don’t take advice because of deep-seated concerns about cost, scale, mistrust and access, and the issue that hangs over the entire discussion: the lack of financial literacy. Housing tops $800 billion The value of residential real estate in Queensland is set to break through the $800 billion barrier amid growing investor confidence and buoyant market conditions. Anton Kardash, CEO of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ), said Queensland now accounted for more than 15 per cent of the nation’s residential housing wealth, estimated at $5.2 trillion.* Brisbane itself is rapidly approaching the $400 billion mark, with regional Queensland accounting for the remainder of the State’s residential real estate wealth. “Queensland residential housing is more popular than ever with investors, who see an enormous upside as confidence rebounds in the local real estate market,” he said. “The State’s real estate renaissance is reflected by a wide range of indicators, from strong price growth and higher sales volumes to more new housing construction and finance approvals. “Nationally, the value of residential housing has grown to be worth more than superannuation, listed stocks and commercial real estate combined.” Mr Kardash said stronger buyer sentiment and sales activity were helping the Gold Coast and Far North Queensland rebound from the GFC. “Confidence is also returning in North and Central Queensland along
with the Southeast, particularly the Sunshine Coast,” he said. Volvo Car tests ‘auto-pilot’ Volvo Car Group’s ground-breaking project ‘Drive Me’ — featuring 100 self-driving Volvos on public roads in everyday driving conditions is moving forward rapidly. The first test cars are already driving around the Swedish city of Gothenburg and the sophisticated Autopilot technology is performing well. “The test cars are now able to handle lane following, speed adaption and merging traffic all by themselves,” says Erik Coelingh, Technical Specialist at Volvo Car Group. “This is an important step towards our aim that the final ‘Drive Me’ cars will be able to drive the whole test route in highly autonomous mode. The technology, which will be called Autopilot, enables the driver to hand over the driving to the vehicle, which takes care of all driving functions.” What makes the ‘Drive Me’ project unique is that it involves all the key players: legislators, transport authorities, a major city, a vehicle manufacturer and real customers. The customers will drive the 100 cars in everyday driving conditions on approximately 50 kilometres of selected roads in and around Gothenburg. These roads are typical commuter arteries, including motorway conditions and frequent queues. ‘Drive Me — Self-driving cars for sustainable
mobility’ is a joint initiative between Volvo Car Group, the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Transport Agency, Lindholmen Science Park and the City of Gothenburg. The Swedish Government is endorsing the project. “This public pilot will provide us with a valuable insight into the societal benefits of making autonomous vehicles a natural part of the traffic environment,” says Erik Coelingh. “Our smart vehicles are a key part of the solution, but a broad societal approach is vital to offer sustainable personal mobility in the future. This unique cross-functional co-operation is the key to a successful implementation of self-driving vehicles.”
